Vorwort Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdys Beschäftigung mit der Violine als Solo­ instrument umfasst einen überschaubaren und dennoch bedeutenden Bereich seines Œuvres. Mit dem Violinkonzert e-moll op. 64 MWV O 14, seinem letzten Solokonzert, schuf er ein Standardwerk der Violinliteratur, das heute im Konzertrepertoire fest etabliert ist. Als der Kom­ ponist im Sommer 1838 signalisierte, dass er „ein Violin Concert […] in e moll […] im Kopfe“1 habe, war nicht nur sein Freund, der Gewandhaus­ konzertmeister Ferdinand David (1810–1873), für den es gedacht war, euphorisch über diese Nachricht. Die „ganze civilisirte Violin=Welt“2 wartete auf dieses Konzert – und dennoch dauerte es noch weitere sieben Jahre, bis das Ersehnte endlich im Juni 1845 bei dem Leipziger Verlag Breitkopf & Härtel und parallel dazu in London (J. J. Ewer & Co.) und Mailand (Jean Ricordi) im Druck erschien. Seitdem war der Sie­ geszug dieses Meisterwerkes nicht mehr aufzuhalten. Mendelssohns Arbeit am Konzert wurde vor allem durch das ständige Drängen des designierten Solisten David vorangetrieben und im September 1844 zu einem vorläufigen Abschluss gebracht. Die Uraufführung am 13. März 1845 im Leipziger Gewandhaus mit Ferdinand David als Solist und unter der Leitung von Nils Wilhelm Gade (1817–1890) diente – wie häufig bei Mendelssohn – quasi als Korrekturdurchgang. Nach anschließenden umfangreichen Änderungen des Komponisten, an denen auch David beteiligt war, erschien knapp neun Monate später die erste Druckaus­ gabe des Werkes. Mit ihr war ein gültiger und nach dem Ermessen des Komponisten abgeschlossener Stand der Überarbeitung erreicht, den die hier vorliegende Ausgabe als Hauptfassung des Werkes wiedergibt.

Grundlage für die Edition bildete ein Vorabexemplar des in Stimmen erschienenen deutschen Erstdruckes von Breitkopf & Härtel, das sich im Bestand der Bodleian Library in Oxford befindet.3 Vereinzelt lieferten Mendelssohns Überarbeitung der abschriftlichen Partitur (Quelle G) und seine Korrespondenz mit Ferdinand David4 Entscheidungshilfe.

Mendelssohns Arbeit am Konzert bis zur Uraufführung am 13. März 1845 lässt sich nur punktuell rekonstruieren, und zwischen den weni­ gen datierbaren Hinweisen klaffen große zeitliche Lücken. Während bis 1840 bereits verschiedene Skizzen zum zweiten und zum dritten Satz und sogar weitreichend ausgeformte Entwürfe zum ersten Satz entstanden waren (Quellen A bis E) und ein Brief vom Juli 1840 an den Londoner Musikkritiker Henry Fothergill Chorley (1808–1872) so­ gar die Fertigstellung des Werkes in Aussicht gestellt hatte,5 ruhte die Komposition in den Jahren darauf fast vollständig. Zwischenzeitlich beschäftigte sich der Komponist sogar lieber mit dem Gedanken an ein Klavierkonzert in der selben Tonart,6 und erst im Spätsommer 1844 – Mendelssohn weilte zur Erholung mit seiner Familie in Soden im Tau­ nus – fand er die „Paar gutgelaunte[n]Tage“,7 die er benötigte, um das Violinkonzert zu beenden. Das mit dem Schlussdatum 16. September 1844 versehene Autograph übergab er schließlich dem designierten So­ listen Ferdinand David in Leipzig. Dieser ließ das Werk sofort durch den Leipziger Kopisten Eduard Henschke (1804–1854) in Partitur und Stim­ men abschreiben. Nach Einstudierung der Prinzipalstimme meldete der Geiger euphorisch nach Frankfurt: „Dein Violin Conzert ist herrlich, 1000 mal besser als alles was wir armen Geiger zusammenstoppeln.“8 Seiner üblichen Praxis gemäß arbeitete Mendelssohn nach der ersten Fertigstellung des Konzertes weiter an dem Werk.9 Er verwendete dazu aber nicht sein Autograph, das er David überlassen hatte, sondern die abschriftliche Partitur (Quelle G), in die er vorrangig mit Bleistift eintrug.

Dazu holte er sich auch den Rat Ferdinand Davids ein. Mendelssohns Änderungen betrafen insbesondere die Kadenz im ersten Satz, die er stark erweiterte und damit einen der wesentlichsten Unterschiede zwischen Früh- und Hauptfassung des Konzerts herbeiführte. In ver­ schiedenen thematisch bedeutsamen Passagen der Prinzipalstimme nahm er Oktavierungen vor, um die Solovioline klanglich deutlicher zu profilieren, was auch das Ziel diverser weiterer Änderungen in der Solo­ stimme war. In den Orchesterstimmen erfolgte vorrangig eine Reduzie­ rung der Instrumentierung an Stellen, die für ein deutliches Hervortre­ ten der Solovioline zu stark besetzt waren. Mendelssohns Eingriffe in Ausdrucks- und Tempoanweisungen waren äußerst subtil, etwa bei der

Bezeichnung des Kopfsatzes: aus „mit Feuer“ Allegro con fuoco wurde „leidenschaftlich“ Allegro molto appassionato, dem lyrischen Nebenthema der Solovioline gab er durch die Anweisung tranquillo etwas mehr Ruhe, und das Prestissimo am Schluss des Kopfsatzes milderte er zum Presto ab. In einer nicht bis in den Druck gelangten Korrektur veränderte er den Beginn des Andante klanglich deutlich durch die An­ weisung an die hohen Tuttistreicher, pizzicato zu spielen.

Davids Vorschläge bezogen sich fast ausschließlich auf die techni­ sche Vereinfachung der Prinzipalstimme – insbesondere in der Kadenz.

Auch fügte der Geiger Fingersätze und Hinweise zur Verwendung von Auf- und Abstrichen hinzu.10 Er vermerkte dies alles in seiner zur Ur­ aufführung verwendeten Korrekturfahne der Prinzipalstimme (Quelle [Ia1b]), in die er selbst kurz vor dem Konzert noch Eintragungen machte.

An Mendelssohn schrieb er später: „Alles was ich Dir über mein Spiel sa­ gen kann ist daß mir gar nichts mißglückt ist und daß ich so gut dispo­ nirt war nicht an das Mechanische denken zu müssen, sondern mich ganz dem Vortrage habe hingeben können. Nach dem Urtheile aller hat man die Solo-Violine überall, auch an den am dicksten instrumentirten Stellen vollkommen deutlich gehört. Die nachträglichen kleinen Aende­ rungen oder vielmehr Erleichterungen die du in der Prinzip. St. gefunden haben wirst, mußte ich, um ganz ohne Befangenheit spielen zu können, machen, ich bitte daß Du sie verzeihst, wenn sie Deinen Beifall nicht haben, aber es lag mir zu viel daran diesmal so makellos als es mir möglich ist zu spielen. Möge Dich der grosse Erfolg dieses Werks so erfreuen daß Du gelegentlich einmal wieder an uns Geiger denkst.“11 Die Kritik urteilte durchweg sehr positiv: „[…] eine herrliche Composition voll origineller Melodienfülle, die dem Virtuosen auch Gelegenheit gibt, sich im polyphonischen Spiele auszuzeichnen. Es ist eine wahre Freude wie­ der einmal ein Concertstück von höherer geistiger Conception zu hö­ ren, ein wahrer Balsam auf die alltäglichen ohrzerreißenden Flickwerke unserer Virtuosen.“12 Vom Rezensenten der Allgemeinen musikalischen Zeitung wurde insbesondere die konzeptionelle Neuausrichtung, die Besonderheit in Form und Anlage, in den Fokus gerückt, indem dieser „die geistreiche eigenthümliche Verbindung der Soli mit dem Orchester“ hervorhob, „welche das Interesse lebhaft in Anspruch nehmen und bis an’s Ende fesseln.“13 Damit spielte er auf die neuartige Behandlung der Solostimme an, nicht nur wegen ihres markanten Einsatzes unmittelbar zu Beginn des Kopfsatzes ohne vorangehendes Orchestertutti, sondern wegen der Art ihres musikalischen Dialogs mit dem Orchester. In der­ selben Zeitung wurde nach Bekanntwerden der Druckausgabe das Kon­ zert unmittelbar in die Nähe zu Beethovens op. 61 gestellt: „Beethoven’s bekanntes Violinconcert gehört nicht zu den Solostücken, die man ins­ gemein dankbare zu nennen pflegt […]. Es gehört eine Art Selbstverleug­ nung – des Virtuosen nur, nicht des Musikers – dazu, diese Wahl zu treffen, da der Erstere mit geringerem Gehalte leicht mehr effectuiren und reicheren Beifall wird erhalten können. […] Ein ähnliches dieser Art, als Abart von dem Gewöhnlichen, haben wir in dem obengenannten Vio­ linconcert von Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy hier anzuzeigen.“14 Auch die Besprechung in der Neuen Zeitschrift für Musik verwies auf Beethoven mit Blick auf das Fehlen des traditionellen Tutti-Beginns: „Als wir ver­ nahmen, daß Mendelssohn die Literatur der Violine um ein Concert be­ reichert habe, waren wir sehr gespannt, dasselbe kennen zu lernen, da wir von dem Componisten eine eigenthümliche Erfassung der Aufgabe erwarten durften. Daß wir uns hierin nicht getäuscht hatten, erwies sich gleich im ersten Allegro, welches nebst dem sich daran schließenden Andante merklich von der üblichen Construction abweicht; hier nament­ lich fiel uns auf, daß das erste Tutti weggefallen ist. Bis jetzt ist uns nur eine Abweichung von diesem Gebrauch, in Beethoven’s PianoforteConcert in Es, vorgekommen, wo jedoch das Tutti nach der Cadenz sehr ausgeführt nachfolgt.“15 Der Prozess der Drucklegung war zum Zeitpunkt der Uraufführung längst angelaufen. David hatte bereits aus der ersten Korrekturfahne gespielt, die Orchesterstimmen waren im Druck und der Klavierauszug beauftragt.16 Breitkopf & Härtel hatten sich die verlegerischen Rechte bereits nach Fertigstellung der Frühfassung gesichert, und der engli­

sche Verleger Buxton (J.J. Ewer & Co.) holte sich die Zusage Mendels­ sohns ebenfalls bereits im Herbst 1844.17 Hinzu kam das italienische Verlagshaus Jean Ricordi in Mailand, das mit der Herausgabe des Vi­ olinkonzertes seine Geschäftsbeziehungen mit Mendelssohn begrün­ dete. Mendelssohn wandte sich selbst an Ricordi und schickte ihm im April 1845, zum gleichen Zeitpunkt wie an Ewer, jeweils die zweiten Korrekturfahnen von Solostimme und Klavierauszug.18 Alle drei Ausga­ ben erschienen parallel am 1. bzw. 2. Juni 1845, in England und Italien allerdings ohne die Orchesterstimmen, nur als Klavierauszug mit Prin­ zipalstimme. Der Komponist irrte in der Annahme, man benötigte dort die Orchesterstimmen nicht, und sowohl Buxton19 als auch Ricordi20 forderten die Korrekturfahnen der Stimmen von Breitkopf & Härtel nachdrücklich ein. In Italien erschien die Ausgabe der Orchesterstim­ men schließlich einige Monate später, im September 1845. In England jedoch kam es nicht zu einer eigenen Ausgabe, vielmehr übernahm der Verlag die von ihm benötigten Exemplare von Breitkopf & Härtel käuflich, eine keinesfalls ungewöhnliche Vorgehensweise, denn es war durchaus Usus, aus Deutschland importierte Stimmensätze zu verkau­ fen.21 Ebenso verfuhr man in Österreich, wo unter dem Namen des Ver­ lagshauses Pietro Mechetti in Wien die Breitkopf-Ausgabe vertrieben wurde.22 1846 erschienen in Paris bei dem Verlag S. Richault ebenfalls Prinzipalstimme, Klavierauszug und Stimmen des Violinkonzertes; die­ se Ausgabe weicht indes mit Druckfehlern und Umbrüchen so deutlich von den anderen drei Ausgaben ab und erschien auch nicht auf deren Titelblättern, dass man von keiner durch Mendelssohn veranlassten Parallelausgabe ausgehen darf.

Der vorliegende Band wäre ohne vielfache Hilfe und Unterstützung von verschiedenen Seiten nicht möglich gewesen. Preface Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s treatment of the violin as a solo instru­ ment encompasses a manageable yet significant scope of his oeuvre.

With the Violin Concerto in E minor op. 64 MWV O 14, his last solo con­ certo, he created a standard work of violin literature that remains firmly established in today’s concert repertoire. When the composer signaled in the summer of 1838 that he had “a violin concerto [...] in E minor [...] stuck in his head,“1 it was not only his friend and dedicatee of the work, the Gewandhaus concert master Ferdinand David (1810–1873), who was euphoric about this news. The “whole civilized violin world”2 waited for this concerto – and yet it still took another seven years, when in June 1845 the longed-for work was finally published in print at the Leipzig publishing house Breitkopf & Härtel as well as in Lon­ don (J.J. Ewer & Co.) and Milan (Jean Ricordi). Since then, the trium­ phal march of this masterpiece has been unstoppable. Mendelssohn’s work on the concerto was driven primarily by the constant pressure of the designated soloist David and brought to a preliminary conclu­ sion in September 1844. The premiere on 13 March 1845 in the Leipzig Gewandhaus with Ferdinand David as soloist and under the direction of Nils Wilhelm Gade (1817–1890) served – as was often the case with Mendelssohn – as a proofreading round. After the composer’s sub­ sequent extensive amendments, to which David contributed as well, the first printed edition of the work was published nearly nine months later. According to the composer’s own assessment, it represented a valid and completed state of revision of the piece. This is therefore the version that the present edition now treats as being the main one of the work. The basis for the edition was an advance copy of the first German print of the parts, published by Breitkopf & Härtel, held by the Bodleian Library in Oxford.3 Occasionally, Mendelssohn’s revision of the manuscript score (source G) and his correspondence with Ferdinand David4 provided decision aid.

Mendelssohn’s work on the concerto up to its premiere on 13 March 1845 can only be partially reconstructed, and there are large time gaps between the few remaining dated documents. Although several sketches of the second and third movements and even fairly compre­ hensive preliminary drafts of the first movement existed (sources A through E), and a letter of July 1840 to the London music critic Henry Fothergill Chorley (1808–1872) even hinted that its completion was within sight,5 his work on the composition came to an apparent stand­ still in the years following. Meanwhile, the composer was actually more interested in mulling over the idea of a piano concerto in the same key,6 and it wasn’t until late in the summer of 1844 while on holiday with his family in Soden (Taunus) where he enjoyed “a few well-humored days”7 that he finished the violin concerto. The autograph copy of the work is dated September 16th, 1844, and it reached Ferdinand David, at long last, in Leipzig at the end of the same month. David had the work im­ mediately transcribed in score and parts by the Leipzig copyist Eduard Henschke (1804–1854). After rehearsing the principal part, the violinist reported euphorically to Frankfurt: “Your violin concerto is magnificent, 1000 times better than anything we poor fiddlers cobble together.”8 As was his practice, Mendelssohn continued working on the concerto af­ ter its initial completion.9 However, as he had handed his autograph to David, he used the manuscript copy of the score (source G), into which he wrote primarily with pencil and for which he consulted Ferdinand David for advice. One of the most significant alterations Mendelssohn made between the early and the main versions was to substantially expand the cadenza in the first movement. He also moved the solo violin part up an octave in various thematically important sections in order to clearly enhance the sound of the solo violin, which was also the aim of various further changes in the solo part. The changes he made to the orchestral parts primarily concerned thinning out the instrumentation in places where the soloist’s sound was vulnerable to being overwhelmed by that of the orchestra. Mendelssohn’s changes in expression and tempo markings were extremely subtle; for example, in the opening movement: Allegro con fuoco was changed to Allegro molto appassionato, the solo violinist’s lyrical secondary theme was

given a little more calm with a tranquillo, and the Prestissimo at the end of the opening movement was toned down to a Presto. One con­ sequential timbre change he made but which was not included in the final printed version was that of instructing the upper tutti strings to play pizzicato at the beginning of the Andante.

David’s suggestions centered almost entirely around simplifying the technical demands of the solo part – especially the cadenza. The vio­ linist also contributed fingerings and notes on the use of up bows and down bows.10 He noted all this in his proof of the solo part (source [Ia1b]), which he used for the first performance and in which he him­ self made entries even shortly before the concert. Later he wrote to Mendelssohn: “All I can tell you about my own playing is that I didn’t have any accidents and that I was so well disposed that I didn’t have to think about the mechanics at all and was instead able to fully de­ vote myself to the performance. Everyone was of the opinion that the solo violin could always be clearly heard, even in the most densely orchestrated sections. I did end up making use of the small changes, or better put, simplifications that you’ll find entered into the solo part so that I could play without even the slightest burden of any potential inhibitions. Please forgive me, if you don’t completely approve, but it was especially important to me this time to be able to play as perfectly as possible. May you enjoy the success of this work so much that, at some point, your thoughts return to us fiddlers.”11 The critics were very positive throughout: “[...] a glorious composition with a wealth of origi­ nal melodies, that gives virtuosos an opportunity to distinguish them­ selves with their polyphonic playing. It is a true joy to once again hear a concert piece of higher intellectual conception, a veritable balsam for the ear regularly assaulted by the more quotidian patchwork pieces of our virtuosos pens.”12 The critic of the Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung focused in particular on the conceptual reorientation, the peculiarity in form and arrangement, emphasizing “the ingenious, idiosyncratic connection of the solos with the orchestra”, “continually engaged the listener’s interest and held it captive until the end.”13 Thus alluding to the innovative treatment of the solo voice – not only because of its striking cue immediately at the onset of the first movement without a preceding orchestral tutti, but also because of the nature of its musical dialogue with the orchestra. After the print edition had become known, the concerto was described by the same newspaper as being squarely situated in the vicinity of Beethoven’s op. 61: “Beethoven’s famous Violin Concerto is not one of those solo pieces one generally thinks of as be­ ing conventionally rewarding [...]. It requires a certain self-denial – only on the part of the virtuoso, not the true musician – to choose to play it, as the former can easily drum up greater effect and incite more lavish applause presenting pieces with less substance. [...] Another similar example, an aberration from the usual, is the above-mentioned violin concerto by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy.”14 The review in the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik also made reference to Beethoven with regard to the lack of a traditional tutti opening: “When we heard that Mendels­ sohn had enhanced the violin literature with a concerto, we were very eager to familiarize ourselves with it, since we wholly expected the composer to have an original approach towards accomplishing that task. We were not mistaken in this assumption, as was immediately proved by the first Allegro, which, along with the Andante, distinctly sets itself apart from more conventional construction methods in that the first tutti is omitted. To date, we are only aware of this having been done one other time, namely in Beethoven’s Pianoforte Concerto in E flat, where, however, there is an extensive tutti following the cadenza.”15 The printing process had long been underway at the time of the premiere. David had already played from the first proof, the orchestra parts were in print and the piano score was commissioned.16 Breitkopf & Härtel had already secured the publishing rights after completion of the early version, and the English publisher Buxton (J.J. Ewer & Co.) also got Mendelssohn’s consent in the autumn of 1844.17 In addition, the Italian publishing house Jean Ricordi in Milan established its busi­ ness relations with Mendelssohn by publishing the Violin Concerto.

Mendelssohn approached Ricordi himself and sent him the second proofs of both the solo part and piano reduction in April 1845. Likewise, he sent them to Ewer.18 All three editions appeared parallel on 1 and 2 June 1845, in England and Italy, however, only the piano reduction with the solo part, without the orchestral parts. The composer erred in the assumption that the orchestra parts were not needed there, and both Buxton19 and Ricordi20 emphatically demanded the proofs of the Breitkopf & Härtel parts. In Italy, the orchestral parts were finally pub­ lished a few months later, in September 1845. In England, however, an own edition was not realized, the publishing house rather took over the needed copies of Breitkopf & Härtel on sale, a by no means unusual procedure, because it was quite customary to sell part sets imported from Germany.21 The same procedure was followed in Austria, where the Breitkopf edition was distributed under the name of the publishing house Pietro Mechetti in Vienna.22 In 1846, the S. Richault publishing house in Paris also published solo part, piano reduction and parts of the violin concerto; this edition, however, differs so clearly from the other three editions with printing errors and page breaks and did not appear on their title pages either, that no parallel edition initiated by Mendelssohn may be assumed.
