Franz Beyer
Preface Composed in 1776/77, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Great Credo Mass,” also called “Missa longa” by Mozart’s father Leopold, can clearly be considered as a “Missa solemnis” on account of its length and scoring. It was also called “Liedmesse” (song mass) because of its popular character, and was widely disseminated, in manuscript form at first. Hermann Abert ranked it “among Mozart’s most successful church-music works with respect to beauty and nobility of the melody and sound.”1 It owes its popularity not least to the occasionally uncommon setting of the text: there are, for example, no less than 63 “Credo” calls in this mass alone, generally as a reverberating echo or bound into a polytexture. One also finds the siciliano of a pastoral scene in the “Et incarnatus est,” whereby the Passion story is already anticipated at the repeated “et homo factus est” through forte attacks on unstressed syllables, descending chromaticism symbolic of death, and its elaboration in the “Crucifixus,” which fades away at the “passus et sepultus est.” (The descending chromaticism of this text passage is, however, also found in Mozart’s first Mass K. 49 as well as in his later sacred works.) At the beginning of the “Sanctus” we encounter the famous four-note motif from the finale of the “Jupiter Symphony,” a kind of archetypal formula used by Mozart in his first Symphony K. 16, in the Symphony K. 319 and in the “Credo” of his F major Mass K. 192. The “Sanctus” claims our attention with the fortissimi on the syncopations, repeated 33 times in a movement that is only 30 bars long. (How rare are fortissimi in Mozart’s music!) The mass has a festive appearance: the traditional “church trio” (two violins and bass) is expanded through the use of two oboes, two trumpets and timpani. From the performance material of the Salzburg Cathedral Choir, it can be inferred that the bass group consisted of an organ, a violone (double bass) and a bassoon as a supporting 8-foot instrument. The inclusion of a violoncello only became customary at a later date. The Salzburg material also confirms the traditional colla parte participation of the trombones. Following contemporary practice, they supported the three lower choral parts in the tutti. A tacet for these instruments – indicated by “senza tromboni” – was called for at solo parts and piano passages of the chorus. Independent notes of this register are found here only in bars 42 and 46 of the “Agnus Dei.” Incidentally, this is the first time that Mozart specifically indicated the trombone trio in the autograph of a mass. The vocal soloists and the chorus were accompanied by an own organ each. This explains the “Solo” and “Tutti” indications in the score and the organ part. The following sources have been used for this edition: A Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s autograph. Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin – Preußischer Kulturbesitz. B Copy of the parts. Dominican monastery of the Holy Cross (Heilig Kreuz), Augsburg (Staatsund Stadtbibliothek, Augsburg). Brackets and broken-line slurs indicate supplements made on the basis of unequivocally analogous passages as well as phrasing standardized on the basis of corresponding passages in the vocal parts and which the editor – namely, in the oboe register – has considered as obvious. We wish to extend our thanks to the above-mentioned libraries for having kindly placed the source material at our disposal. Munich, Fall 1999 1 Hermann Abert: W. A. Mozart, Leipzig, 101983, p. 411.
