Vorwort Opernpläne beschäftigten Schumann bereits seit seiner Jugendzeit. Die Suche nach einem geeigneten Operntext zieht sich wie ein roter Faden durch sein Leben. In den 1840er-Jahren wird die „Deutsche Oper“ gar zu seinem „Morgen- und abendlichen Künstlergebet“,1 ohne dass er indes über einen Textentwurf und erste Kompositionsansätze hinauskommt.2 Anfang April 1847 jedoch ist er „von der außerordentlichen Schönheit“ von Hebbels Genoveva so „ergriffen“,3 dass er seine „Ouverturengedanken u. Entschluß zu diesem Text“4 unmittelbar umsetzt. Noch bevor er eine einzige Note der Oper, geschweige denn eine Zeile des Librettos geschrieben hat, entwirft er in einem Zuge die kompositorischen Umrisse der Ouvertüre.5 Gleichzeitig stürzt er sich in die Arbeit am Text.

Schon am 8. April legt er dem befreundeten Dresdner Textdichter Robert Reinick6, den er für die Mitarbeit am Libretto gewinnen will, seine ersten Textideen vor. Beide Entwürfe, die der theaterunerfahrene Reinick liefert, stoßen jedoch bei Schumann auf Bedenken. Schumann entschließt sich deshalb, den Text selbst auszuarbeiten und den von ihm als „wohl genialste Natur unserer Tage“7 hochgeschätzten Dichter Friedrich ­Hebbel um Rat zu bitten.

Die folgenden Wochen und Monate arbeitet Schumann am Genoveva‑Text, er führt die Arbeit an den Sze‑ nen aus Goethes „Faust“ fort, ­unterbrochen nur von Fanny Hensels Tod am 14. Mai und dem Tod seines vierten Kindes Emil am 22. Juni. Hebbels von Schumann freudig erwarteter Besuch am 27. Juli in Dresden, bei dem über den Genoveva-Text gesprochen werden sollte, bringt für das Libretto jedoch keinen Fortschritt. Der Dichter erlebt den Komponisten als nicht nur „hartnäckigen“, sondern auch „unangenehmen Schweiger“.8 Die angestrebte Zusammenarbeit mit Hebbel kommt nicht zustande. Während Schumann nun allein das Libretto vorantreibt, nimmt er die Arbeit an den im Februar 1844 begonnenen Faust-Szenen wieder auf, komponiert zwei Klaviertrios9 und widmet sich den Korrekturarbeiten an seiner 2. Symphonie C-dur op. ­61, die im November 1847 erscheint – in dem Monat, in dem Mendelssohn stirbt. Erst am 17. Dezember 1847 kommt Schumann wieder auf sein Opernprojekt Genoveva zurück; am 26. Dezember ist die Instrumentierung der Ouvertüre abgeschlossen.10 Im folgenden „Opernjahr“ 1848, nach Schumanns eigenem ­Bekunden „trotz aller Aufregung von außen“ einem seiner „fleißigsten“ und „frucht­barsten“, gelingt es ihm, die Oper zu Papier zu bringen. „Ich habe von Anfang Januar bis etwa Ende August [1848] eine Oper ‚­Genoveva‘ fertig componirt. […] Der Oper namentlich gedenke ich in Zukunft meine Kraft zuzuwenden.“11 Nachdem er sich systematisch eine Gattung nach der anderen – Lied, Kammermusik, Sinfonik – ­erschlossen hatte, gilt sein Bemühen der Oper, genauer einem neuen Typus der großen romantischen deutschen Nationaloper in der Nachfolge ­Carl ­Maria von Webers, wie dies auch andere Komponisten versuchten, allen voran Richard Wagner, mit dem Schumann in dieser Zeit bezüglich seiner Genoveva und Wagners zeitgleich komponiertem Lohengrin in häufigem Kontakt steht.

Von der Fertigstellung der Genoveva-Partitur bis zur ersten Aufführung ist es jedoch noch ein weiter Weg. Die Revision und die mit der Aufführung seines Opernerstlings verbundenen Arbeiten sind für Schumann mehr Pflicht als Neigung. Den durch die Komposition der Oper ausgelösten Schwung nutzt er, um an einigen kleineren Werken weiterzuarbeiten, weitere Opernpläne zu schmieden12 und sein nächstes musikdramatisches Projekt anzugehen: Manfred, ein Gedicht nach Lord Byron in drei Abteilungen mit Musik.

Auch hier beginnt er mit der Ouvertüre. Die theatralische Realisierung seiner Oper, für die er ursprünglich wohl die Hofoper Dresden im Auge hatte, gestaltet sich dagegen weitaus problematischer.

Die Aufführung der Genoveva in Dresden kommt infolge persönlicher Intrigen nicht zustande; weitere Aufführungspläne in Frankfurt, Berlin und Kassel zerschlagen sich, nicht zuletzt wegen der um sich greifenden Revolutionsereignisse. Die zunächst „in der 1sten Hälfte des Februar“ 1849 avisierte Aufführung am Leipziger Stadttheater muss mehrfach verschoben werden.13 Immerhin gelingt es Schumann im Februar 1850, den Verlag C. F. Peters zur Inverlagnahme zu gewinnen. „Dabei wäre noch zu dem Vortheile des

Verlags […] zu erwähnen, einmal, daß ich dabei nicht […] auf dem Stich der Partitur bestehe, sondern, da ja eine Oper voraussichtlich immer ein größeres Vertriebsterrain hat, wie ich denn auch hoffe, daß sich die Ouverture allein einer günstigen Aufnahme zu erfreuen haben wird. […] Wie ich schon gestern äußerte, so wäre es auch eine Bedingung von mir, daß Sie auch Partitur u. Orchesterstimmen der Ouverture bringen möchten, spätestens vielleicht zwei Jahre nach dem Erscheinen des Clavierauszugs.“14 Am 22. Mai 1850 beginnt das Leipziger Theater endlich mit der Einstudierung; am 25. Juni dirigiert Schumann die Premiere seiner Oper im Beisein vieler prominenter Besucher, darunter Ludwig Spohr, Niels W. Gade, Ferdinand Hiller, Ignaz Moscheles, Joseph Joachim und Franz Liszt.15 Bei einem geselligen Zusammensein am nächsten Tag spielen Clara Schumann und Franz Liszt die Ouvertüre vierhändig, letzterer „natürlich vom Blatt spielend“.16 Die Ouvertüre liegt Schumann ganz besonders am Herzen. Im Juni 1850, etwa zeitgleich zur Premiere der Oper, erscheinen bereits Partitur, Orchesterstimmen sowie der zweihändige Klavierauszug, nachdem Schumann die Ouvertüre zuvor in zwei Konzerten unter seiner Leitung am 25. Februar 1850 im Leipziger Gewandhaus und am 16. März im Hamburger Apollosaal ausprobiert hatte. Sie stößt beim Publikum auf eine gemischte Aufnahme. Von der Kritik wird sie einerseits als „großes charakter­volles Tongemälde“ gewürdigt, als Instrumentalwerk, „welches in seiner völligen Gestaltung so selbständig und abgeschlossen erscheint, daß es zweifelsohne eine Zierde der Concertprogramme werden wird“,17 andererseits ist die Rede von einer zwar „geistvolle[n,] aber für das größere Publikum […] weniger wirksame[n] Ouvertüre“18, die „nicht sehr ansprechen“ wollte, wohl auch nicht „den Stempel des Schumannschen Genius“19 aufweise. Hier mag noch die Erwartungshaltung eines Publikums mitgeschwungen haben, das bezüglich Handlung und musikalischer Gestaltung der Oper auf Spekulationen angewiesen war. Tatsächlich beginnt 1850, im Jahr der Aufführung von Schumanns Oper, die Polarisierung zwischen Anhängern der absoluten Musik und den „Neudeutschen“.

Schumann, der Poet, weniger auf äußere Wirkung aus als der Tondichter Liszt und der Musikdramatiker Wagner, setzt ganz auf musikalische Mittel; er bedient sich einer subtilen Assoziationstechnik und knüpft ein dichtes Netz an Erinnerungsmotiven, um die seelischen Räume seiner Protagonisten auszuloten. Aber er verzichtet auch weitgehend auf dramatische Effekte und klar konturierte Handlungsstränge, wie sie das Theater erfordert. Das bringt Schumanns Genoveva im Vergleich zur geradezu frenetischen Aufnahme, die Wagners Lohengrin nur drei Monate später in Weimar findet, allenfalls freundlichen Beifall, in der Folge aber auch herabsetzende und ablehnende Kritiken.

Während Schumanns Oper nach wenigen Folgeaufführungen in der Versenkung verschwindet, kann sich die Ouvertüre als eigenständiges Werk im Konzertsaal etablieren. Wilhelm Josef von Wasielewski, einer der ersten Studenten Schumanns am 1843 gegründeten Leipziger Konservatorium und später sein Konzertmeister in Düsseldorf, ­charakterisiert sie in seiner erstmals 1858 erschienenen Schumann-Biographie wie folgt: „Die Ouvertüre ist ein charaktervolles, herrliches Musikstück, von hohem Kunstwert und den besten Instrumentalwerken Schumanns beizugesellen. Sie bringt auf meisterhafte Weise den geistigen Gehalt des poetischen Stoffes in einfach großen Zügen zum Ausdruck, obwohl nicht in theatralisch dekorativer Manier, sondern vielmehr in echt musikalischem Sinne; weshalb sie denn auch ohne Frage im Konzertsaal weit mehr zur Geltung gelangt, wie vor den Lampen des Proszeniums.“20 Zusammen mit der Manfred-Ouvertüre gehört sie heute zu Recht zu den beliebtesten Konzertouvertüren Schumanns.

Die vorliegende erste textkritische Ausgabe der Genoveva-Ouvertüre basiert auf dem von Schumann revidierten Erstdruck von Partitur und Stimmen. Preface Opera plans repeatedly held Schumann’s attention since his youth, and the search for a suitable libretto wound its way through his life like a red thread. In the 1840s, “German opera” even became his “morning and evening prayer as an artist,”1 even if he had produced nothing more than the draft of a libretto and his first compositional essays.2 However, in April 1847, he was so “transfixed”3 by the “extraordinary beauty” of Hebbel’s Genoveva that he immediately transposed his “thoughts about an overture and decision in favor of this text.”4 Even before putting one note to paper for the opera, not to mention a line of the libretto, he drafted the compositional outline of the overture in one go.5 He then also began working diligently on the text. On 8 April he presented his first ideas for the libretto to his friend, the Dresden librettist Robert Reinick,6 who he hoped would collaborate on the project. However, both drafts which Reinick – inexperienced in writing for the stage – delivered to Schumann stirred doubts in the composer’s mind. Schumann thus decided to elaborate the text on his own and to seek advice from the poet whom Schumann idolized as “undoubtedly the most brilliant mind of our time,”7 Friedrich Hebbel.

Schumann kept working on the Genoveva libretto during the following weeks and months, and continued his work on the Szenen aus Goethes “Faust”, interrupted solely by Fanny Hensel’s death on 14 May and the death of his fourth child Emil on 22 June. Hebbel’s visit to Dresden on 27 July – he and Schumann had planned to discuss the Genoveva text – brought no progress to the libretto situation, even though Schumann had been joyfully awaiting this meeting. The poet experienced the ­composer not only as “persistently,” but also as “uncomfortably mute.”8 The hoped-for collaboration with Hebbel did not come about.

While Schumann was toiling alone on his libretto, he also returned to his Faust Scenes, which he had begun in February 1844. He also wrote two piano trios9 and devoted himself to proofreading his Symphony No. 2 in C major op. 61, which was published in November 1847, the month of Mendelssohn’s death; it was not until 17 December 1847 that ­Schumann resumed his work on the Genoveva project; he completed the ­orchestration of the Overture on 26 December 1847.10 He then succeeded in penning the work the following “opera year” 1848 which, in Schumann’s words and “despite all the agitation from outside,” was one of his “most productive.” “From early January to approx. the end of August [1848] I have finished writing an opera, ‘Ge­noveva’ […] As to the opera, I intend to apply all my strength to it in the future.”11 After having systematically mastered one genre after the other – song, chamber music, symphonic music – he now focused his efforts on the opera or, put more precisely, on an offshoot of the great romantic German national opera in the succession of Carl Maria von Weber, a type that other composers were also striving for, foremost among them Richard Wagner. Schumann cultivated close contacts with Wagner at this time because of his Genoveva and of Wagner’s Lohengrin, which were both written at the same time. Nevertheless, there was still a long road to travel from the completion of the Genoveva score up to the premiere.

For Schumann, the revision and other work connected with the performance of his first opera fell into the category of duty rather than inclination. He used the energy unleashed by the composition of the opera to stimulate work on some smaller pieces, to make more plans for an opera12 and to gather ideas for his next musico-dramatic project: Manfred, a poem after Lord Byron in three acts with music. Here, too, he began with the overture. The stage performance of his opera – which the composer had most likely been hoping to see at the Dresden Court Opera – turned into a much more problematic affair.

Personal intrigues are to blame for the failure of the Dresden production of Genoveva to materialize.

Further planned performances for ­Frankfurt, Berlin and Kassel also came to naught, not least because of the revo­lutionary events sweeping across Germany. The performance at the Leipzig Stadttheater had to be repeatedly postponed13 even though it had been initially announced for “the first half of February” 1849.

In any event, Schumann succeeded in selling the rights of the work to the publisher C. F. Peters in February 1850. “To the publisher’s advantage […] I should like to point out that for once I am not insisting on the engraving of the score, as an opera presumably always has a broad radius of distribution, which I expect, and the overture alone would reckon with a favorable reception. […] As I mentioned yesterday, it would be a condition of mine that you also release the score and orchestral parts of the overture perhaps two years after the publication of the piano reduction at the latest.”14 On 22 May 1850 the Leipzig Theater finally began preparing the production: on 25 June Schumann conducted the premiere of his opera in the presence of many prominent guests, including Ludwig Spohr, Niels W. Gade, Ferdinand Hiller, Ignaz Moscheles, Joseph Joachim, and Franz Liszt.15 At a social gathering the next day, Clara Schumann and Franz Liszt played the overture as a duet, with Liszt “of course playing at sight.”16 Schumann was particularly fond of the overture. The score, the ­orchestral parts and the two-hand piano reduction were published in June 1850, at about the same time that the opera was premiered. The composer had tried out the overture in two previous concerts played under his baton at the Leipzig Gewandhaus on 25 February 1850, and at Hamburg’s Apollosaal on 16 March of that year. The overture drew a mixed reception from the public. The critics hailed it as a “grand tone painting full of character” and as an orchestral work “whose consummate form is so autonomous and well-rounded that it will undoubtedly become a staple of concert programs.”17 On the other hand, the work was considered as “a spirited, but, for the majority of concert-goers, not very substantial overture”18 – a piece that did “not address itself readily to us” and did not appear to “bear the imprint of Schumann’s ingenuity.”19 What possibly played a role in this assessment were the expectations of the public, which could do little else than speculate about the plot or musical design of the opera. Indeed, the polarization between the supporters of absolute music and the “New Germans” had begun in 1850, the year of the opera’s performance.

Schumann, the poet, places all his bets on musical means, aiming less at external dazzle than the tone poet Liszt and the musical dramatist Wagner; he culls his material from a subtle association technique, and weaves a dense net of remembrance motifs in order to plumb the souls of his protagonists. He broadly rejects dramatic effects, however, and clearly contoured strands of action such as are demanded by the theater. Compared with the frenetic reception that greeted Wagner’s Lohengrin in Weimar only three months later, Schumann’s Genoveva drew only friendly applause at best, and dismissive, disparaging reviews at worst.

While Schumann’s opera disappeared from the stage after only a few follow-up performances, the overture was able to establish itself as an independent piece fit for the concert hall. Wilhelm Josef von Wasielew­ski, one of Schumann’s first students at the Leipzig Conservatory (founded in 1843), and later his concertmaster in Düsseldorf, characterized it in his Schumann biography, first published in 1858, as follows: “The overture is bursting with character, a fabulous musical work of ­enormous artistic value, and to be placed alongside Schumann’s best instrumental works. It masterfully gives voice to the intellectual contents of the poetic substance in simple, grandiose traits, not in a theatrically decorative way, however, but in a genuinely musical sense; this is why it undoubtedly makes much more impact in a concert hall than in front of proscenium lamps.”20 Together with the Manfred Overture, it rightfully takes its place among Schumann’s most beloved concert overtures.
