Vorwort KV 219 ist Mozarts fünftes Violinkonzert,1 es entstand ebenso wie die Konzerte KV 211, KV 216 und KV 218 im Jahr 1775 in Salzburg. Die speziellen Anlässe, für die diese Konzerte komponiert wurden, sind unbekannt.

Möglicherweise waren sie für einen ortsansässigen Geiger wie Antonio Brunetti bestimmt, für den Mozart ein „Adagio und Rondeux“2 (KV 261 und KV 269?) komponierte. Mindes­tens ein Werk schrieb er für den Hofviolinisten Johann Anton Kolb.3 Ebenso wahrscheinlich ist allerdings, dass er sie für sich selbst oder seinen Vater komponierte. Leopold war immerhin ein angesehener Geiger und Mozart hatte seit 1769 den Konzertmeisterposten im erzbischöflichen Orchester inne, zu­nächst als unbezahlter dritter Konzertmeister, von August 1772 an mit einem Jahres­­gehalt von 150 Florins. Er hatte seit seiner frühesten Jugend Violinunterricht erhalten und trat regelmäßig als Violinsolist in den Konzertreisen der 1760er und 1770er Jahre auf.

Noch 1777 schrieb er an seinen Vater, er habe in Augsburg ein Violinkonzert von Vanhall sowie ein eigenes Konzert aufgeführt.4 Und am 6. Oktober dieses Jahres beschrieb er ein Konzert in München: „vorgestern als den 4:ten samstag, am Hochfeyerlichen Nammens=tag seiner königlichen Hoheit des Erzherzogs Albert, war eine kleine accademie bey uns: […] wir machten gleich zu erst die 2 quintetti von Hayden; […] dann spiellte ich das Concert in C in B und Ej, und dan daß trio von mir. […] Zu guter lezt spiellte ich die lezte Casa­tion aus den B von mir. da schauete alles gros drein. ich spiellte als wenn ich der gröste geiger in Ganz Europa wäre.“ Leopold er­widerte: „daß sie bey Abspielung deiner letzten Caßation alle groß darein geschauet, wundert mich nicht, du weist selbst nicht wie gut du Violin spielst, wenn du nur dir Ehre geben und mit Figur, Herzhaftigkeit, und Geist spielen willst, ia, so, als wärest du der erste Violin­spieler in Europa.“5

Edition und Aufführungspraxis Vorliegende Ausgabe basiert auf Mozarts Autograph, der einzig überlieferten authentischen Quelle für KV 219. Sie wurde in der Überzeugung ediert, dass seine Autographe nicht nur die „Substanz“ seiner Werke, sondern ebenso – auf ganz reale Weise – konkrete Aufführungen widerspiegeln.

Eine „Fassung letzter Hand“ lässt sich kaum erstellen: Wie seine Autographe und Aufführungskopien zeigen, revidierte Mozart meist ein Werk, sobald er es nochmals spielte. Insofern spiegeln die Quellen – auch diejenigen, die unmittelbar auf ihn selbst zurückgehen – nicht notwendigerweise die sukzessive „Verschlechterung“ eines „festgelegten“ Textes wider (selbst wenn sie manchmal Kopierfehler enthalten), vielmehr stellen sie Momentaufnahmen in der Aufführungsgeschichte eines Werkes dar. Unter diesem Aspekt können viele traditionelle „Editionsprobleme“, unter anderem uneinheitliche Bogensetzung und Dynamik, entweder als absichtliche Unterschiede und Variationen (ein wesentliches Element in Mozarts Stil) oder als unterschiedliche Aufführungsmöglichkeiten verstanden werden.

Ein besonders schönes Beispiel für Mozarts Freude an verschiedenen Varianten stellen im G-dur-Konzert KV 216 die ossia-Versionen im dritten Satz Takt 269ff., 276ff. und 284ff. dar. In Fällen, wo sich derartige Sachverhalte in den Quel­len exakt datieren oder wo sich verschiedene chronologische Schichten eines Autographs oder einer authentischen Kopie unter­scheiden las­sen, tritt eine regelrechte „Aufführungsgeschichte“ zutage. Diese zeigt, dass Mozart interpretato­rische Vielfalt erwartete: Die Notwendigkeit zu interpretieren ist sowohl explizit als auch implizit in seiner Notation enthalten.

Um ein möglichst klares Bild Mozartscher Aufführungspraxis zu vermitteln, wurde in der Regel die charakteristische Notation der authentischen Quellen beibehalten. Dies gilt insbesondere dann, wenn aus den Mozartschen Notierungseigenheiten Hinweise auf die Ausführung ab­geleitet werden können: – die Doppelhalsierung, die nicht nur auf divisi, sondern bisweilen auch auf polyphone Führung hinweist; – die Verbalkung bzw. gelegentliche Separierung einzelner Noten oder Notengruppen innerhalb der Verbalkung, die aufschlussreich für Arti­kula­ tion und Akzentuierung der Phrasenstruktur sein kann; – die Kombination von Halte- und Bindebögen, die im Gegensatz zur heute gebräuchlichen Form Haltebögen nicht unter längere Bindebögen zusammenfasst.

Bögen zwischen Vorschlags- und Hauptnoten sowie zwischen Trillern und Nachschlägen wurden nicht automatisch ergänzt. Zwar schreibt Leopold Mozart die prinzipielle Anbindung von Vorschlagsnoten selbst in Fällen vor, wo kein Bogen notiert ist,6 jedoch zeigt die Notierungsweise in Mozarts Autographen und Aufführungsmaterialen ebenso wie der musikalische Kontext, dass dies für ihn nicht notwendigerweise immer der Fall gewesen sein muss, zumindest in den Jahren nach 1770. Ähnlich vorsichtig verfahren wurde mit der Übertragung der Artikulation innerhalb der Streicherstimmen, oder von Streichern und Holzbläsern in andere Holzbläserstimmen, wenn diese nicht im Autograph notiert sind. Dies trifft insbesondere auf die Hornstimmen zu, denen in modernen Editionen vielfach die Artikulation der Oboen oder anderer mehr oder weniger parallel laufender Stimmen übertragen wurde. Diese sind jedoch in Mozarts Autographen oder Aufführungsmaterialen artikulatorisch nahezu unbezeichnet und es gibt kaum Grund anzunehmen, dass Mozart generell von einer Angleichung der Hörner an die Artikulation der Holzbläser ausging. Aus den gleichen Gründen wurden artikulatorische Ergänzungen an Parallelstellen nur dort vorgenommen, wo autographe Anhaltspunkte für eine Artikulationsabsicht zu finden waren.

Einige spezifische Fragen der Aufführungspraxis werden im Folgenden besprochen.

Ensemble: Größe, Besetzung und Aufstellung Es gibt wenig aussagekräftige Dokumente über die Größe von Mozarts Orchestern in Salzburg, wo die Violinkonzerte komponiert und aufgeführt wurden. Immerhin lässt sich aus dem, was überliefert ist, auf eine Orchestergröße von ca. 28 Musikern mit acht ersten und sechs zweiten Violinen, zwei Violen, fünf oder sechs Violoncelli und zwei oder drei Kontrabässen sowie Bläsern und einem Tasteninstrument schließen. Dies scheint die ungefähre Größe sowohl für Hof- wie Privatorchester in Salzburg gewesen zu sein.7 Wie die Orchesteraufstellungen aussahen, ist unsicher. Im Falle der Klavier­ konzerte war die Continuogruppe wahrscheinlich um das in der Mitte des Ensembles befindliche Tasten­instrument (Cembalo oder Hammerklavier) herum platziert, die ersten und zweiten Violinen einander gegenüber und die Bläser dahinter. Es gibt jedoch keine Beweise für oder gegen die Mitwirkung eines Con­tinuo-Tas­teninstruments in den Violinkonzerten und so muss offen bleiben, ob de­ren Leitung zwischen Solist und Tasteninstrument aufge­teilt war oder ob der Solist, wahrscheinlich vom gleichen Platz, den der Konzertmeister heute einnimmt, das Ensemble geleitet und dabei in der Regel die Tutti mitgespielt hat.

Solo – Tutti Eine Reihe von Mozarts Konzertautographen, die Klavierkonzerte ein­ geschlossen, enthalten Solo- und Tutti-Hinweise. Diese sind dort, meist in abgekürzter Form (S: und T:), zu jedem der Streichersysteme gesetzt, in seltenen Fällen auch zu den Bläsersystemen. Im Autograph von KV 219 finden sie sich auch zur Violino-principale-Stimme, nicht aber zu den Bläsersystemen. In der vorliegenden Ausgabe wurden sie in ver­saler Form (SOLO bzw. TUTTI) als Generalhinweis für alle Streicher nur über dem System der Violine I wiedergegeben. Auch wenn diese manchmal als Hinweise auf die Struktur des Werks aufgefasst werden, ist es doch wahrscheinlicher, dass sie auf einen Wechsel in der Besetzungsstärke der Streicher, nämlich auf volle oder reduzierte Besetzung, hinweisen (letztere eventuell nur vom jeweils ersten Pult oder möglicherweise auch nur mit jeweils einem Spieler besetzt). Im Falle Mozarts findet sich der Hauptbeweis für diese Hypo­ these in einer heute in Melk aufbewahrten zeitgenössischen Stimmenkopie des Klavierkonzerts KV 175 + 382, die separate Ripienostimmen enthält.8 Es gibt aber auch einen anderen authentischen Beweis: Leopold Mozarts Kopie des Klavierkonzerts KV 466 enthält ebenfalls Ripienostimmen für die ersten und zweiten Violinen,9 und das Autograph von KV 595 weist eine aufschlussreiche Passage auf (beginnend mit Takt 147), die nur als Hinweis auf eine Besetzungsreduzierung der Streicher und eine Aufteilung der Bässe in Violoncello und Kontrabass zu verstehen ist.10 In KV 219 gibt es zwei nicht ganz eindeutige Solo- bzw. Tutti-Stellen. Bei der ersten (Satz I, T. 118) ist der genaue Wechsel von Tutti zu Solo unklar:

IV S: (=Solo) ist dort zur Takt-Eins der Bassi notiert (während es in Violine I und II und den Violen erst zum zweiten Achtel steht) und fungiert sowohl als Schlussnote des vorhergehenden Unisono als auch als erste Note einer hier beginnenden Basssequenz. Bei der zweiten Stelle (Satz II, T. 56–62) ist die Notation der Solovioline innerhalb eines Tutti-Abschnitts widersprüchlich. In den Takten 55 (zweites Viertel) und 56 sind in der Violino-principale-Stimme Pausenzeichen notiert; die Takte 57–61 sind, wie in Mozarts Notierung üblich, leer. Dies wäre als expliziter Hinweis Mozarts auf ein Pausieren der Solovioline in diesen Tutti-Takten zu verstehen (wie z. B. T. 120ff. und 126). Merkwürdigerweise notiert Mozart aber in der Violino-principale-­ Stimme in Takt 62 die beiden Schlusstöne der Violine-I-Stimme vor Beginn des nächsten Solos, was normalerweise als ein Hinweis auf das Mitspielen der vorangegangenen Tutti-Stelle zu verstehen ist (wie z. B. T. 22). Derartige mitzuspielende Stellen sind ansonsten aber unmissverständlich durch Col 1mo violino gekennzeichnet (wie z. B. T. 1). Eine vergleichbare Stelle gibt es auch in den oben erwähnten Stimmenkopien Leopold Mozarts des Klavierkonzerts KV 466. Die Notierung solcher Schlussnoten könnte auch „Stichnotenfunktion“ für den Solisten gehabt haben, der ja von seiner Position aus gleichzeitig auch das Orchester dirigierte. Es würde sich in diesem Fall also nicht um Noten im Sinne einer Spielanweisung handeln, sondern um eine Orientierungshilfe für den dirigierenden Solisten. Die vorliegende Neuausgabe setzt in den leeren Takten 57–61 sowie statt der Schlussnoten in Takt 62 Pausenzeichen.11 Dennoch verbleibt hier für den Solisten natürlich die Möglichkeit, mit den ersten Violinen mitzuspielen.

Dynamik In der Regel notiert Mozart dynamische Bezeichnungen links von den betreffenden Noten mit den im 18. Jahrhundert gebräuchlichen Formen pia: (p:), for: (f:), wobei der Doppelpunkt auf eine Abkürzung hinweist. Die vereinfachte Notation mit Buchstaben (p, f ), wie sie ausnahmslos in Drucken verwendet wird, taucht in seinen früheren Manuskripten weniger regelmäßig für nachträgliche und manchmal flüchtige Zusätze zum Notentext auf; Buchstabenbezeichnungen sind dagegen eher für Mozarts späte Wiener Jahre charakteristisch.

Die Platzierung und Ausführung von Mozarts Dynamik kann Heraus­ geber wie Interpreten vor vertrackte Probleme stellen. Die normative Verwendung von Buchstaben, so eindeutig sie erscheinen mag, kann vor allem dort problematisch sein, wo sich Mozarts Bezeichnungen pia: bzw. for: über mehrere Noten erstrecken. Werden sie vom Herausgeber zu Beginn dieser verbalen Bezeichnungen statt zu deren Ende platziert, kann dies dazu führen, dass die Dynamik um einige Noten zu früh gesetzt ist.

Dabei beschränkt sich die Problematik keinesfalls auf die Platzierung.

Gehören einerseits abrupte Dynamikwechsel unabdingbar zu Mozarts Stil, so legen andererseits Inhalt und Charakter seiner Musik die Möglichkeit vermittelnder dynamischer Übergänge auch an Stellen nahe, wo kein crescendo bzw. decrescendo vorgeschrieben ist. In solchen Fällen kann die Dynamik den Augenblick bezeichnen, wo die neue Klang­stärke erreicht ist, oder sie dient eher der Phrasierungsgestaltung, als dass damit ein abrupter Wechsel gemeint ist.

Beim schnellen Wechsel von f zu p – Mozart differenziert zwischen fp:, f:p: und for:pia: – sollte sich die Positionierung des dem f: fol­genden p: bzw. pia: nicht allein auf das Schriftbild des Autographs, sondern auch auf den musikalischen Kontext und das Erkennen von rhetho­rischen Figuren stützen. In KV 219 lassen sich derartige Beispiele im ersten Satz in Takt 46, 55–57/157–159, 118–121, 127/130 und im zweiten Satz in Takt 2 und den entsprechenden Paralleltakten fin­den. Die unterschiedliche Nota­tion des fp zu den Bassi in den Takten 55–57/157–159 des ersten Satzes stellt offenbar eine Ausnahme von Mozarts ansonsten klarer und musikalisch nachvollziehbarer Notation dar: In der Exposition schreibt Mozart fp:, in der Reprise dagegen f:p:. In diesem Falle scheinen beide Stellen die gleiche Bedeutung zu haben.

Artikulation Klarheit der Artikulation ist eine zentrale Eigenschaft des Mozartschen Stils, was durch seine detaillierte Notation von Bögen und Staccatozeichen bestätigt wird. Es gibt jedoch immer wieder kontroverse Meinungen darüber,

ob Mozart bei der Bezeichnung von Staccati zwischen Punkt und Strich unterschied und welche Bedeutung diesen Zeichen beizumessen ist.12 Ein kurzes, leichtes Absetzen ist nur eine Bedeutung des Striches: Er kann auch ein betontes Absetzen bezeichnen, vergleichbar dem späteren, in Mozarts Manuskripten nicht vorkommenden Akzent (S). Die Violinschule seines Vaters erwähnt nur den Strich. Da Mozart nach meiner Überzeugung fast ausschließlich Striche no­tierte (auch wenn diese durch sein hohes Schreibtempo gelegentlich eher Punkten ähneln; eine Ausnahme davon stellen lediglich Punkte unter Bögen dar, die Portato anzeigen), aber auch, um eine willkürliche Unterscheidung zwischen Punkt und Strich zu vermeiden, werden diese Zeichen in vorliegender Ausgabe generell als kurze Striche wie­derge­geben. So kann der Benutzer eigenständig über die geeig­ netste, dem jeweiligen Kontext bzw. Charakter entsprechende Ausführung entscheiden.

Nach Leopold Mozart und anderen Lehrwerken der Zeit sind Bögen als Diminuendo aufzufassen, wobei die letzte Note leichter und kürzer auszuführen ist. Setzt Mozart Bögen zu verbalkten Gruppen von Achtelnoten oder schnelleren Werten, dann unterbricht er diese immer dann, wenn sich die Verbalkungsrichtung ändert; darüber hinaus unterbricht er oft Bögen an Seitenenden und gelegentlich „stückelt“ er auch einen weiteren Legatobogen an den vorherigen an. Wie Parallelstellen zeigen, lässt sich aus diesen Bogenunterbrechungen nicht notwendigerweise auf die normalerweise damit verbundene Artikulationsabsicht schließen. Trotzdem wurde generell auf Angleichung solcher Unterschiede verzichtet, um auch hier die Entscheidung dem Benutzer zu überlassen.

Preface K. 219 is Mozart’s fifth violin concerto.1 Like the concertos K. 211, K. 216 and K. 218 it dates from 1775 and was written in Salzburg. The specific occasions for which the concertos may have been composed are, however, unknown. Possibly they were intended for a local violinist, such as Antonio Brunetti, for whom Mozart composed an “Adagio und Rondeux”2 (K. 261 and K. 269?). And he wrote at least one work for the court violinist Johann Anton Kolb.3 It is just as likely, however, that Mozart composed them for himself or for his father. Leopold, of course, was an eminent violinist. And Mozart had held the post of Konzert­meister in the Archbishop’s orchestra since 1769 (as unpaid third Konzertmeister at first, but with an annual salary of 150 florins from August 1772). He had been an adept violinist from his earliest years, frequently performing on the instrument during the tours of the 1760s and 1770s. As late as 1777 he wrote to his father that in Augsburg he had performed a violin concerto by Vanhall, as well as one of his own.4 And in the same year on 6 October he described a concert in Munich: “The day before yesterday, Saturday the 4th, on the solemn festival of the nameday of His Royal Highness Archduke Albert, we had a little concert here …

We first played Haydn’s two quintets … then I played my concertos in C, B flat and E flat and after that my trio … Finally I played my most recent Cassation in B flat. They all opened their eyes, I played as if I were the finest fiddler in all Europe.” Leopold replied: “I am not surprised that when you played your most recent Cassation they all opened their eyes. You yourself do not know how well you play the violin, if you will only do yourself credit and play with energy, with your whole heart and mind, yes, just as if you were the first violinist in Europe.”5

Edition and Performance Practice The present edition is based on the sole surviving authentic source for K. 219, Mozart’s autograph, and the conviction that Mozart’s scores represent not only the “substance” of his works but also – in a very real sense – actual performances. A Fassung letzter Hand is scarcely pos­sible: as his autographs and performance copies show, more often than not, Mozart revised a work when playing it again. For this reason, sources deriving from him do not necessarily document the successive deterioration of a “fixed” text (even if they sometimes include copying errors) but, rather, successive moments in a work’s performance history. Seen in this light, many traditional editorial “problems,” among them uniformity of slurring and dynamics, can be understood as representing either deliberate differences and variations (an essential element of Mozart’s style) or various performing options. A particularly fine example of Mozart sanctioning varied versions of the same material can be found in his G-major concerto K. 216, the ossia-passage for the solo violin in the third movement at measures 269ff., 276ff. and 284ff. Furthermore, in those instances where a source can be accurately dated, or the various chronological layers of an autograph or authentic copy unravelled, a “per­form­ance history” emerges. This history shows that Mozart expected variety in performance: the imperative to interpret is both explicit and implicit in his notation.

In order to give as clear an indication as possible of Mozartian performance practice, the characteristic notation of the autograph has as a rule been preserved. This is especially the case in those instances where the peculiarities of Mozart’s notation carry performance implica­tions: – dual-stemming to indicate not only divisi but also the polyphonic basis of some of the writing; – Mozart’s beaming, which frequently separates individual notes or groups of notes from larger groups to articulate phrase structure and accentuation; and – combinations of ties and slurs in succession, rather than ties subsumed under lengthy slurs.

Slurs have not been added automatically to connect appoggiaturas to main notes and trills to passing notes. Although Leopold Mozart prescribed the universal ap­plication of such slurs, even in cases where they are not notated,6 the evidence of Wolfgang’s autographs and performing parts as well as the musical contexts, suggests that for him this may not always have been the case, at least from the 1770s on. Similarly, ar­ticulation has not

been transferred as a matter of course from strings, or strings and woodwinds, to other wind parts when they are not ­notated in the autograph. This affects the horn parts in parti­cular, which in many modern editions are assigned articulations from the oboes or other parts that they double (or nearly double). Yet the horn parts are rarely articulated in Mozart’s autographs or his performing parts and there is little reason to assume that Mozart always intend­ed them to follow the norms of woodwind articulation. For similar reasons, I have also re­frained from adding articulations at parallel passages, except where there is autograph evidence that such articula­tion was expected.

Some specific performance practice issues are discussed below.

Ensemble: Size, Makeup, and Seating Arrangements There is little explicit documentation concerning the size of Mozart’s orchestras in Salzburg, where the violin concertos were composed and performed. Nevertheless, such evidence as survives suggests an orchestra of around 28 players including eight first and six second violins, two violas, five or six violoncellos and two or three double basses as well as winds and a keyboard. This appears to have been an approximate norm for both the court and private orchestras in Salzburg.7 Seating plans are uncertain although in the piano concertos the continuo group was probably gathered close to the centrally located keyboard (harpsichord or piano), with first and second violins across from each other in front and the winds ranged behind. In the case of the violin concertos, however, there is no evidence for or against keyboard continuo and it is unclear whether direction of the works was split between soloist and keyboard or whether the soloist, who may well have occupied what is today the concertmaster’s position and played along with the tuttis, as a rule directed the ensemble himself, without continuo.

Solo – Tutti Mozart’s concerto autographs, including the piano concertos, often contain Solo and Tutti markings. They are almost always notated (mostly abbreviated as S: and T:) for each of the string staves (in K. 219 includ­ing the solo violin) and in some concertos (but not in K. 219) additional­ly for the wind staves. In the present edition they have been set in capital letters (SOLO and TUTTI) only above the staff of Violin I as a general instruction for all strings.

Although these markings are some­times con­strued as representing the structure of the work, more likely they rep­resent changes in texture, indicating full or reduced strings (pre­sum­ably the first desk although possibly just one player per part). In Mozart’s case the chief evidence for this hypothesis has been a con­temporary copy of the piano concerto K. 175+382, now at Melk,8 which includes separate ripieno parts. However, there is authentic ev­idence as well: Leopold Mozart’s copy of the piano con­certo K. 466 also in­cludes first and second violin ripieno parts,9 while the autograph of K. 595 has a revea­l­ing passage in the finale, beginning at measure 147, that can only be understood as indicating both a reduction in the size of the string body and a division of the string basses into violoncello and double bass.10 There are two not quite unequivocal Solo/Tutti passages in K. 219. The first concerns measure 118 in Movement I, where the precise change from Tutti to Solo is unclear: S: (= Solo) is notated here on the first beat of the Bassi (whereas it is placed only at the second eighth note in the Violins I and II and the Violas) and functions both as the closing note of the preceding unison as well as the first note of a bass se­quence that begins here.

The second passage occurs at measures 56–62 of Movement II, where the notation of the solo violin within a Tutti section is contro­versial. In measures 55 (second quarter) and 56, rests are notated in the Violino principale part; measures 57– 61 are left empty, a normal occurrence in Mozart’s notation. This could be understood as an ex­plicit instruction to the solo violin to pause in these Tutti measures (such as, for example, at mm. 120ff. and 126). Curiously, however, Mozart notates the two closing notes of the Violin I part in measure 62 of the violino principale before the beginning of the next Solo; this is normally taken to mean that the soloist would have been playing along with the Tutti in the preceding passage (an example is

VI found at m. 22). Such passages requiring the soloist to join the Tutti are usually clearly marked with Col 1mo violino (in m. 1, for example). A comparable passage is also found in the aforementioned copies of the parts of the Piano Concerto K. 466 made by Leopold Mozart. However, the notation of such closing notes might have had a “cue-note function” for the soloist, who would be simultaneously conducting the orchestra from his posi­tion.

In this case, these notes would not be a performance instruction, but would merely serve as a means of orientation for the conductor-soloist. In this new edition I have placed rest signs in the empty measures 57– 61 and have replaced the closing notes in measure 62 with rests as well.11 The option to play with the first violins never­theless remains.

Dynamics As a general rule, Mozart notates dynamics to the left of the notes to which they apply, using the common 18th-century forms pia: (p:) and for: (f:), in which the colon denotes abbreviation. The simplified notation (p, f ) that invariably appears in standard printed editions occurs infrequently in his earlier manuscripts, often for later and sometimes hasty additions to the text; letter designations are more characteristic of the late Vienna years.

The placement and execution of Mozart’s dynamics poses vexing problems: the normative use of simplified dynamics, uncontroversial though it may seem, often engenders difficulties when Mozart’s dy­­n­amics straddle several notes. In placing them where Mozart’s pia: or for: begin rather than where they end, editors may prescribe a dy­namic change up to several notes too early.

Nor are the problems limited to placement. Although sharp contrasts of dynamics are integral to Mozart’s style, the content and character of his music sometimes suggest the possiblity of mediation between dynamics even where no crescendo or decrescendo is marked. In such cases the dynamics may serve to denote the moment at which a new level is reached, or to indicate phrase shape, rather than an abrupt shift.

As for the quick succession of f to p – Mozart differentiates between fp:, f:p: and for:pia: – the decision where to begin the p: or pia: after the f: should be based not only on the visual appearance of the autograph but also on the musical context and a knowledge of rhetorical figures. In K. 219 examples can be found in the first movement at measures 46, 55–57/157– 159, 118–121, 127/130 and in the second movement at measure 2 and parallel passages. The discrepant notation of the fp in the Bassi in measures 55–57/157–159 of the first movement is apparently an exception in Mozart’s otherwise clear and musically cogent notation: Mozart writes fp: in the exposition, but f:p: in the re­capitulation. In this instance, both passages appear to have identical meanings.

Articulation Clarity of articulation is a central attribute of Mozart’s style, borne out through details of his slurs and staccato markings. There is still con­ troversy over the question whether Mozart used two signs, the dot and the stroke, for his staccati, as well as the intended meaning of the two.12 Furthermore, a short, light articulation is only one meaning of the nota­tion: it can also indicate a more weighty articulation akin to the later accent sign (S). His father’s violin treatise mentions only the stroke. Given my belief that Mozart wrote strokes almost ex­clusively (even if through haste in writing these sometimes approx­imate dots; the one consistent exception is dots under slurs, indicating portato), and in order to avoid drawing distinctions

between dots and strokes that can become arbitray, I have given the sign as a stroke in the present edition. It is left to the performer to determine which type of execution is appropriate given the character and context.

According to Leopold Mozart and other contemporaneous treatises, slurs are to be understood as diminuendos, with the last note normally lighter and shorter. Similarly, in passages of eighth notes or faster values joined by beams, Mozart always broke a slur at the point the beams needed to be drawn in the opposite direction, up or down. Most often he breaks slurs at the end of a page, and occasionally joins a slur to the previous one. Parallel passages show that such breaks need not require the normal interruption associated with the end of a slur. However, I have generally refrained from standardizing such divergences, leaving the choice to the performer.

All information concerning the autograph and editorial decisions are contained in the Critical Report, which the reader is encouraged to consult.
