Vorwort Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdys Oratorium Elias op. 70, das die biblische Geschichte des alttestamentarischen Propheten thematisiert, gilt neben seiner knapp zehn Jahre zuvor entstandenen Schwesterkomposition Paulus op. 36, die sich auf ein neutestamentarisches Sujet konzentriert, als das Hauptwerk seines Autors. Mehr aber noch als op. 36 dokumentiert das spätere Oratorium die überaus enge Verbindung zwischen Deutschland als seiner ersten und England als seiner zweiten künstlerischen Heimat, die der Komponist als verpflichtend empfand und die er seit Ende der 1820er Jahre mit großem Engagement pflegte.

Darüber hinaus – und auf einer allgemeineren Ebene – ist heutzutage für kaum jemanden mehr zweifelhaft, dass Elias als das bedeutendste Werk der Gattung im 19. Jahrhundert angesehen werden muss. Bereits mit dem Paulus hatte Mendelssohn die Tradition des Oratoriums zu neuer Blüte gebracht, dessen ästhetische Wertschätzung seit den herausragenden Schöpfungen von Georg Friedrich Händel und Joseph Haydn beträchtlich abgesunken war. Das Überleben der Gattung im deutschsprachigen Raum war zwar durch Friedrich Schneider gewährleistet worden, der zahlreiche Oratorien komponiert und mit seinem Das Weltgericht von 1819 einen beträchtlichen Erfolg errungen hatte. Die großen Klassiker Mozart und Beethoven hingegen hatten dem Oratorium nur wenig Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt. Dennoch oder vielleicht gerade deshalb bestand im Musikleben Mitte der 1830er Jahre offenbar ein gesteigertes Interesse an neuen Produkten der Gattung. Mendelssohn machte dafür die damalige Qualität der Singvereine verantwortlich. In seinem vom 30. April bis 1. Mai 1837, also gut elf Monate nach der Uraufführung des Paulus, verfassten Brief schrieb er an seinen Freund Carl Klingemann, Legationsrat in London, mit dem er anfänglich die intensivste Korrespondenz über den neuen Oratoriumsplan pflegte: „[…] Und jetzt im Augenblick sind die Singvereine gut, und sehnen sich nach Neuem, da möchte ich denn ihnen was liefern, das mir mehr gefiele, als mein voriges Oratorium, und dazu verhilf Du mir und schick mir ein neues.“ 1 Mendelssohn führte im selben Brief aber auch noch ein zweites, seine Poetik erläuterndes Motiv für den raschen Entschluss an, ein neues Oratorium ins Auge zu fassen: „[…] Ich halte es immer mehr für Irrtum, wenn man sich einbilden will, durch ein Werk zu wirken; es muss durch eine Folge unablässig geschehen, und aus der sondert sich dann das eine, beste heraus, wenn sie alle ernst gemeint sind. Ich möchte darum gern bald noch etwas im Kirchenstil schreiben, da sich zu einer Oper immer noch keine Aussicht zeigt […].“2 Schon während des 18. Niederrheinischen Musikfestes in Düsseldorf, bei dem Paulus unter Mendelssohns Leitung am 22. Mai 1836 zum ersten Mal in der Öffentlichkeit erklang, wurden Pläne für ein neues Oratorium geschmiedet, und Klingemanns Brief vom 10. März 1837 lässt darauf schließen, dass mit Elias auch der Gegenstand des Werkes schon dort zur Debatte stand: „[…] Aber am nächsten guten freien Tag stürze ich mich in den Elias. Denn dass der es sein muss, leidet bei mir keinen Zweifel. Ich habe schon damals bei meiner Rückkunft vom Rhein die Vorstudien dazu gemacht, und mir sein Leben, auch in ausserbiblischen Darstellungen, überschaut und halt’s für einen grossen tüchtigen Stoff, wo es namentlich an starken Chören nicht fehlen soll.“3 Mendelssohn war zwar fest entschlossen, ein zweites Oratorium zu schreiben, die Wahl von dessen biblischem Gegenstand dagegen galt ihm als zweitrangig. Diese Interessenlage ließ ihn im Brief vom 12. August 1836 an Klingemann4 sogar zu dem scherzhaften und von der Sache her gänzlich abwegigen Vorschlag greifen, neben Elias und Petrus auch Og zu

Basan5 in Erwägung zu ziehen. Noch in seinem Brief vom 18. bis 20. Februar 1837 nach London blieb die Option über den Gegenstand offen, sein eminentes Interesse an der Komposition dagegen akzentuierte Mendelssohn durch die Bitte, Klingemann möge ihm das Libretto als Hochzeitsgeschenk verehren: „[…] Mach mir in den nächsten Wochen einen Text zu einem biblischen Oratorium, das ich im Laufe des Sommers komponieren könnte. Ich sagte Dir schon damals 2 Stoffe, die mir beide gleich lieb waren, Petrus und Elias. […] Denke doch, was ich nach Deiner Meinung jetzt für eine Art Oratorium schreiben müsste, und so eines schick mir. Es soll mein Hochzeitgeschenk6 sein; es wäre mir das liebste was Du mir geben könntest; bitte, versag es mir nicht.“7 Klingemann hatte sich von allem Anfang an für den Elias entschieden, und so lag es nahe, über Alternativen mit anderen potentiellen Librettisten zu verhandeln. Der erste, an den Mendelssohn dachte, war Julius Schubring, der ihn schon bei der Textformulierung des Paulus unterstützt hatte. In den ausführlichen Überlegungen, die er am 13. Juli 1837 dem Dessauer Pfarrer unterbreitete, stand nicht der Prophet Elias, der namentlich überhaupt nicht erwähnt wird, sondern der Apostel Petrus im Zentrum der Erwägungen. Doch blieb der Plan eines Petrus-Oratoriums Episode.

Zwischen August 1836 und April 1837 tauschte sich Mendelssohn mehrfach brieflich über den Oratoriumstext mit Klingemann aus, wobei der Elias immer klarer in den Vordergrund rückte. Während einer neuerlichen Englandreise des Komponisten im August / September 18378 kam es sogar zu zwei regelrechten Arbeitssitzungen mit Klingemann 9, welche ein sechsseitiges von diesem geschriebenes Manuskript 10 zum Ergebnis hatten: die allererste Quelle zum Text des Oratoriums überhaupt. Doch gingen von dem persönlichen Zusammentreffen keinerlei Impulse aus. In den folgenden Monaten musste der Komponist bei seinem Londoner Freund mehrfach und in zunehmender Dringlichkeit die Fortsetzung der Ausarbeitung des Librettos anmahnen, erhielt aber immer wieder nur hinhaltende Antworten. Am 13.

Juli 1838 schließlich signalisierte Klingemanns Brief, mit dem er seine Elias-Materialien – neben dem erwähnten sechsseitigen Entwurf von August 1837 noch ein weiteres immerhin 18 Seiten umfassendes Manuskript11 – nach Leipzig schickte, das Ende der Kooperation.

So wandte sich Mendelssohn erneut an Julius Schubring, um aufgrund der von und mit Klingemann erarbeiteten Entwürfe die Bemühungen um das Libretto fortzuführen und den Beginn der kompositorischen Arbeit zu ermöglichen. Nach anfänglichem Zögern eröffnete dieser seine Mitwirkung am 28. Oktober 1838 mit einem sorgfältig durchdachten Entwurfsschreiben12, das durchaus mit jenem ersten, sechsseitigen Manuskript von der Hand Klingemanns vergleichbar ist. Dieser Brief stellte den Anfang einer Reihe von Entwürfen dar, die in einer gewissermaßen postalisch geführten Diskussion bis zum 6. Dezember des Jahres zwischen Leipzig und Dessau hin- und herwanderten. Seinen Höhepunkt hatte dieser Gedankenaustausch direkt zu Anfang, als Schubring am 28. und 30. Oktober sowie am 1. November gleich drei größere Manuskripte an Mendelssohn expedierte. Doch nach diesem euphorischen Beginn warf die Bestimmung der inhaltlichen und dramaturgischen Konzeption des Textes immer größere Probleme auf. In seinem Brief vom 6. Dezember brachte Mendelssohn den inhaltlichen Dissens auf den Punkt: Er betraf im Kern die zu jener Zeit häufig thematisierte Frage, welche Rolle dem Dramatischen innerhalb der Gattung des Oratoriums angemessen sei. Hinzu allerdings kam Schubrings Insistenz auf der Einbeziehung neutestamentarischer Texte13, der Mendelssohn nicht Folge leisten wollte und letztlich ja auch nicht Folge geleistet hat.

Man kann allerdings bezweifeln, ob die inhaltlichen Meinungsverschiedenheiten zwischen Mendelssohn und Schubring so unüberbrückbar gewesen wären, dass sie allein zum

Abbruch auch dieser Kooperation hätten führen müssen und damit das Projekt Elias für die folgenden sechs Jahre zum Erliegen brachten. Sicher ist, dass Mendelssohn gegen Ende 1845, als die kompositorische Arbeit schon in vollem Gange war, für die Ausformung des Librettos wiederum Schubring zu Rate zog und der genannte Dissens offenbar nicht als so gewichtig empfunden wurde, dass er die Wiederaufnahme der gemeinsamen Arbeit hätte verhindern können. Denkbar wäre aber auch, dass der Komponist nach den nun schon gut zweieinhalb Jahre währenden Anstrengungen um einen brauchbaren Oratoriumstext müde geworden und sein anfänglicher Enthusiasmus für das Projekt erlahmt war. Er bedurfte eines frischen Plans, eines neuen Ansporns.

Wiederum aus England kam die entscheidende Anregung, die alte Oratoriumsidee endlich ins Werk zu setzen. Am 22. Juni 1845 kündigte Joseph Moore, der Leiter des Birmingham Musical Festivals, also genau derjenigen Institution, bei der Mendelssohn während des Musikfests 183714 neben anderen Konzerten den Paulus dirigiert hatte, dem Komponisten den Auftrag eines weiteren Oratoriums für das Festival 1846 an. Mendelssohn nahm nach anfänglichem Zögern dieses Angebot mit dem von ihm gewählten Sujet an, konnte allerdings auch im Oktober 1845 noch nicht versprechen, das Werk rechtzeitig zu vollenden. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt allerdings hatte er sich bereits mit großer Intensität an die Arbeit gemacht, denn es war ja vieles, nahezu alles noch zu tun. Der einzige Satz, der in einer Frühfassung bereits vorlag, war das Doppel-Quartett „Denn er hat seinen Engeln befohlen über dir“15, das schon im August 1844 dem preußischen König Friedrich Wilhelm IV. mit einer Widmung zugesandt worden war. Den Hauptteil der kompositorischen Arbeit an der Uraufführungsfassung aber, d. h. die eigentliche musikalische Schöpfung, leistete Mendelssohn in den verbleibenden zehn Monaten. Über den chronologischen Fortgang des konkreten Entstehungsprozesses der Musik wissen wir wenig. Zwar herrscht an Zeugnissen aus zweiter Hand – namentlich Erinnerungen von Freunden und Kollegen – kein Mangel, wirklich zuverlässige Dokumente dagegen, zumal vom Komponisten selbst, sind spärlich und betreffen fast ausschließlich die Endphase der Arbeit. So schreibt Mendelssohn am 23. Mai 1846 an Julius Schubring: „[…] Ich bin nämlich jetzt mit dem ersten Theil ganz fertig ud. vom 2ten stehn auch schon 6, 8 Nummern auf dem Papier.“16 Und seinem Bruder Paul teilt er am 9. Juli des Jahres voller Optimismus mit, dass der Elias in wenigen Tagen fertig sei17. Fertig allerdings war das Oratorium erst einen Monat später, als der Komponist sein Partiturmanuskript mit dem – vorläufigen – Enddatum Leipzig d. 11ten August 1846. abschloss.

Der Eindruck indes, dass sich Mendelssohn in den genannten Monaten – neben seinen hauptberuflichen Tätigkeiten am Gewandhaus und im Leipziger Konservatorium – ganz auf den musikalischen Teil des Oratoriums konzentrieren konnte, wäre trügerisch. Auch beim Libretto lag noch Vieles im Argen und bedurfte der Revision oder Neufassung. So wandte sich der Komponist erneut an Julius Schubring und übersandte ihm am 16. Dezember 1845 einen eigenen Textentwurf, der für den I. Teil auf weite Strecken mit der endgültigen Version übereinstimmt, für viele Bereiche des II. Teils dagegen unfertig oder lückenhaft war. Anfang Januar traf man sich in Dessau, um die anstehenden Probleme zu beraten, und am 9. des Monats retournierte Schubring Mendelssohns Entwurf mit ausführlichen Kommentaren und Revisionsideen, die der Komponist allerdings nur in wenigen Fällen honorierte. Dennoch erbat er am 23. Mai 1846 nochmals den Rat des Dessauer Geistlichen: „[…] Nun fehlen mir aber an mehreren Orten des 2 ten Theils noch recht schöne Bibelstellen zur Auswahl, ud. darum bitte ich Dich nun!“ 18 Aber auch jetzt waren Schubrings Vorschläge nur in Einzelfällen für den Komponisten akzeptabel. Man muss

also davon ausgehen, dass das Libretto in letzter Instanz von Mendelssohn selbst stammt.

Zieht man in Betracht, dass die Komposition erst am 11. August, also gut zwei Wochen vor der Uraufführung am 26. August, vollendet war, so kann man gut nachvollziehen, dass Mendelssohn einige Monate später auf dieses Konzert als „gehetztes“ anspielt 19. In vollem Umfang einschätzbar wird aber ebenso, welch Höchstmaß an Engagement und Leistungsbereitschaft den Beteiligten, Organisatoren wie Interpreten, abverlangt wurde, um die Aufführung beim Birmingham Musical Festival zu realisieren bzw. den erwünschten und letztlich auch erreichten Erfolg zu ermöglichen. Besonders hervorzuheben ist hier die immense Arbeit von William Bartholomew20, der nicht nur die englische Übersetzung des Librettos besorgte, sondern auch die Stichvorlagen für den Druck sowohl des Textbuches als auch der Chorstimmen21 ausschrieb.

Diese erste öffentliche und vom Komponisten geleitete Darbietung des Elias gilt in der Rezeptionsgeschichte zu Recht als die Uraufführung des Werkes im emphatischen Sinne: Hier wurde der Grundstein für den überwältigenden und dauerhaften Erfolg des Oratoriums gelegt, welcher das rasch erwachende europaweite Interesse an weiteren Aufführungen begründete.

Geht man dagegen von einer Teleologie der Werkgenese aus, d. h. von der Entwicklung des Kunstwerks bis hin zu dessen vom Autor bewusst gewollten und durchweg gebilligten Beschaffenheit, so kann das Konzert in Birmingham lediglich als Voraufführung angesehen werden. Sie bot dem Komponisten die einzigartige Gelegenheit, das bislang Ausgearbeitete hinsichtlich der musikalischen Gestalt, der dramaturgischen Anlage sowie der praktischen Realisierbarkeit bei der Probenarbeit und in der Klangwirklichkeit der Konzertsituation zu kontrollieren und daraus gegebenenfalls Schlüsse für Änderungen zu ziehen. Eine solche konkrete Testphase passt aufs Beste in Mendelssohns generelle kompositorische Praxis, seine Werke erst nach gründlicher Revision zum Druck freizugeben.

Mehrere Zeugnisse sprechen dafür, dass Mendelssohn bereits in Birmingham die definitive Umarbeitung des Oratoriums entworfen und mit anderen besprochen hat. Gewiss ist, dass er sich, wieder in Leipzig angekommen, mit Intensität an die Arbeit gemacht haben muss, denn schon am 26. September 1846, also genau einen Monat nach der Uraufführung, war er bereit, eine Sendung mit acht Nummern der Herstellungsvorlage des Klavier-Auszugs nach London auf den Weg zu bringen. Zeitlich parallel dazu erreichte ihn ein neuerliches das Oratorium betreffendes Angebot aus England. Die Sacred Harmonic Society lud den Komponisten ein, das Werk nun auch in der Londoner Exeter Hall, dem Sitz der Gesellschaft, zu dirigieren, und nannte sogleich mit April 1847 einen Termin, der sich im weiteren Verlauf der Planungen nicht mehr ändern sollte.

Die Ausarbeitung der Endfassung des Elias zielte von Anfang an auf die Drucklegung des Werkes und ging Hand in Hand mit der Erstellung des englischen Klavier-Auszugs. Grund für dieses Junktim war eine Absprache, die Mendelssohn mit seinem englischen Verlag J. J. Ewer & Co. in London und dessen Leiter Edward Buxton einerseits und seinem deutschen Verlag N. Simrock in Bonn und dessen Leiter Peter Joseph Simrock andererseits getroffen hatte: Während der Druck der Orchesterstimmen und der – zweisprachigen – Partitur Simrock vorbehalten blieb, sollten der Klavier-Auszug und die Chorstimmen – einmal mit englischem, einmal mit deutschem Text – in beiden Verlagen erscheinen, und zwar mit zeitlichem Vorlauf der Produktion bei Ewer & Co. Der Londoner Verlag stellte sodann Abzüge seiner korrigierten Stichplatten von Chorstimmen und Klavier-Auszug Simrock zur Verfügung, der damit eine zuverlässige Grundlage des eigenen Stichs, aber auch Gelegenheit zu weiteren Verbesserungen des Textes hatte.

Der Vorrang, der dem Druck des englischen Klavier-Auszugs in den folgenden Monaten zukam, führte zu einer reichen Korrespondenz sowohl mit Buxton als auch mit Bartholomew. Mit ersterem wickelte der Komponist die organisatorischen Fragen ab, die bei der Vorbereitung eines Musikdruckes entstehen; mit letzterem setzte er die Diskussion über die inhaltlich passende Formulierung des englischen Textes und im Zusammenhang damit über die korrekte Deklamation fort.

Die vielfältigen Quellen zum Klavier-Auszug, die Mendelssohn nun nach London schickte, bieten – anders als bei der Genesis der Frühfassung – die Chance, den Fortgang der kompositorischen Arbeit an der Endfassung gewiss nicht lückenlos, aber doch in großen Zügen nachzuvollziehen: 26. September 1846: Mendelssohn schickt acht Sätze nach London.

30. November 1846: Nach Erhalt der Korrektur meldet der Komponist Änderungswünsche an; im Brief an Buxton ist nochmals die Rede von acht Sätzen, konkret genannt werden die Einleitung, die Ouverture, der Chor Nr. 1, das Rezitativ Nr. 3, die Chöre Nr. 29 und 41 sowie das Rezitativ Nr. 33, von dem eine Neufassung präsentiert wird; aus dem Brief vom 30.

Dezember 1846 geht allerdings hervor, dass Buxton bereits Ende November die ersten beiden Sätze des II. Teils vorgelegen haben müssen: ein Rezitativ in G-Dur, das später gestrichen wurde, und die Aria Nr. 21.

30. Dezember 1846: Mendelssohn expediert zwölf Stücke und konstatiert, dass Buxton damit den kompletten I. Teil und den Anfang des II. in Händen habe.

2. Februar 1847: Mendelssohn schickt den Rest des II. Teils mit Ausnahme des Schluss-Chors.

8. Februar 1847: Mendelssohn reicht den Schluss-Chor nach, meldet aber bezüglich der Nr. 8 neue Änderungswünsche an.

17. Februar 1847: Mendelssohn übermittelt die neue Nr. 8 und legt der Sendung – als Entschuldigung für seine „Revisionswut“ – u. a. das Manuskript der Ouverture des Elias, bearbeitet für Klavier zu vier Händen, bei.

Inzwischen waren die Druckvorbereitungen auch bei N. Simrock eingeleitet worden, und in einem Grundsatzbrief vom 15. Januar 1847 hatte Mendelssohn dem Verlag seine Vorstellungen über das weitere Procedere ausführlich dargelegt. Bemerkenswert ist darin zunächst die Tatsache, dass bereits jetzt der Untertitel des Werkes und die Opuszahl feststanden.

Noch aufschlussreicher indes erscheint die hier vorgetragene Bitte des Komponisten, den Partiturdruck abweichend von der üblichen Praxis nicht aufgrund einer Partiturvorlage (Autograph oder Abschrift) herzustellen, sondern dafür die Orchesterstimmen (Instrumente) bzw. den Klavier-Auszug (Vokalpartien) heranzuziehen. Simrock kam Mendelssohns Vorstellungen in allen Punkten bereitwillig entgegen und beeilte sich, den Druck in allen Bereichen so perfekt wie möglich auszuführen. Der Klavier-Auszug erschien Anfang Juli, die Orchesterstimmen Anfang September und die Partitur schließlich Anfang Oktober 1847.

Gewiss hätte der Herstellungsprozess des Druckes noch zügiger vonstatten gehen können, wäre dessen reguläre Abwicklung nicht durch die Notwendigkeit, neues Stimmenmaterial für die in England anberaumten Konzerte bereit zu stellen, behindert worden, denn die Revision der Komposition hatte so viele Änderungen mit sich gebracht, dass die bei der Uraufführung in Birmingham benutzten Noten nicht mehr brauchbar waren. Mendelssohn hoffte zunächst, alle Orchesterstimmen gedruckt mit nach London nehmen zu können, musste sich dann aber damit begnügen, dass nur die Streicherstimmen in dieser Form vorlagen.

Das Aufführungsmaterial stellte allerdings nicht die einzige Hürde dar, die es für die geplanten Aufführungen zu überwinden galt. Nahezu alle Solostimmen waren Birmingham gegenüber mit anderen Sängern besetzt, die neu einstudiert werden mussten. Und Mendelssohn

konnte erst spät, am 12. oder 13. April, anreisen; es blieben ihm also nur drei oder vier Tage, um die letzten Vorbereitungen für das Konzert am 16. April zu treffen.

Die organisatorischen und künstlerischen Anstrengungen, welche die ersten Tage in London dem Komponisten auferlegten, wurden allerdings in den folgenden zwei Wochen kaum geringer. Denn es ging jetzt nicht nur um eine einzige Aufführung des Oratoriums wie 1846, sondern um insgesamt sechs Konzerte, die nach der Londoner Erstaufführung am 16. April am 20. April in Manchester, am 23. April als erste Wiederholung in London, am 27. April in Birmingham und schließlich am 28. und 30. April als zweite und dritte Wiederholung wieder in London gegeben wurden.

Doch Mendelssohn wurde durch den überwältigenden Erfolg, den die Aufführungen errangen, hinreichend entschädigt. Zumal in London, wo die dreifache Wiederholung des Oratoriums als deutlicher Beleg für die Begeisterung im Publikum gelten muss, konnte an die langjährige Wertschätzung angeknüpft werden, die Mendelssohn als Komponist, Dirigent, Pianist und Organist in England genoss. Gleichsam gekrönt wurde dieser Enthusiasmus durch eine Dankadresse, die Albert von Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha, der Gemahl von Queen Victoria, nach dem Besuch der Aufführung am 23. April in deutscher Sprache in sein Textbuch22 schrieb: „Dem edlen Künstler der, umgeben von dem Baalsdienst einer falschen Kunst, durch Genius und Studium es vermocht hat den Dienst der wahren Kunst, wie ein anderer Elias, treu zu bewahren, und unser Ohr, aus dem Taumel eines gedankenlosen Tönegetändels, wieder an den reinen Ton nachahmender Empfindung und gesetzmäßiger Harmonie zu gewöhnen, – – – dem großen Meister der alles sanfte Gesäusel, wie allen mächtigen Sturm der Elemente an dem ruhigen Faden seines Gedankens vor uns aufrollt – zur dankbaren Erinnerung geschrieben von Albert. Buckingham Palace. April 24.1847.–“ Am 17. September 1847 kehrte Mendelssohn nach gut fünfmonatiger Abwesenheit 23 nach Leipzig zurück. Wie schon in den vorangehenden zwei Jahren gehörte die Hauptaufmerksamkeit des Komponisten auch in den folgenden sieben Wochen bis zu seinem Tode am 4. November dem Elias, nun freilich speziell der Fertigstellung des Partiturdrucks und der Vorbereitung von Aufführungen in deutscher Sprache24. Verabredet waren zwei Konzerte unter Leitung des Komponisten: Mitte Oktober in Berlin und Anfang November in Wien – beide mussten wegen der letztlich letalen Krankheit Mendelssohns verschoben und umbesetzt werden. Die Erstaufführung in Berlin wurde am 3. November von Julius Schneider, diejenige in Wien am 14. November von Johann Baptist Schmiedel geleitet.

Bezüglich der Partitur dagegen war der Komponist erfolgreicher, und es gelang ihm mit einer denkwürdigen Geste, die vielleicht durch die Eloge von Prinz Albert angeregt worden war, einen angemessenen Schlusspunkt unter das Kapitel Elias zu setzen. Mehrfach hatte er den Verlag Simrock gebeten, ihm bei Erscheinen der Partitur vorab zwei Exemplare zukommen zu lassen, von denen er eines vor der Veröffentlichung zu verschenken gedachte. Empfänger dieses Geschenks sollte der preußische König Friedrich Wilhelm IV. sein, der 1835 als Kronprinz bereits Widmungsträger des Erstdrucks der Konzert-Ouvertüren op. 21, 26 und 27 gewesen war. Und nachdem Simrock Anfang Oktober die beiden erbetenen Partituren nach Leipzig geschickt hatte, ging am 17. Oktober 1847 das Schenkungsexemplar an den Monarchen nach Berlin ab. Mendelssohn aber war bereits zu schwach, um den Widmungsbrief selbst zu schreiben, diktierte ihn seiner Frau Cécile und leistete lediglich die Unterschrift selbst. Der König wies seine Kameralisten an, auf die Übersendung der Partitur „freundlich zu antworten“, ließ es sich dann aber doch nicht nehmen, auch eigenhändig seinen Dank auszudrücken: „Die Nachricht von Ihrem leidenden Zustand hat mich doppelt betrübt, denn ich habe Sie deshalb nicht gesehen wie ich es hoffte und Ihre

ersehnte Aufführung des Elias ist nicht zu Stande gekommen. Mein herzlichster Wunsch ist, daß Ihre Gesundheit bald das Erscheinen hier und Ihre Direction des Elias erlaube […].“25 Das Schreiben wurde am 4. November nach Leipzig gesandt – Mendelssohn hat es also nicht mehr erhalten.

Im Blick auf die für zweite Hälfte April 1847 geplanten Aufführungen der definitiven Fassung in England schreibt er am 10. März des Jahres an Klingemann: „[…] Frage aber doch Buxton, ob man nicht die ganze Elias-Aufführung, die doch eine gehetzte wieder zu werden scheint, bis zum Herbst verschieben sollte […]“ (Briefwechsel mit Klingemann [Anm. 1], S. 325).

Mit Bartholomew stand Mendelssohn schon seit 1841 wegen Textübertragungen anderer Kompositionen in die englische Sprache in Kontakt.

Bei den beiden Oratorien Mendelssohns liegt die außergewöhnliche Situation vor, dass als erstes die Chorstimmen herauskamen, die bereits bei den jeweiligen Uraufführungen gedruckt zur Verfügung standen. Dies hatte vor allem den Grund, die bei den ersten Aufführungen zu erwartenden Chormassen mit ausreichendem und einheitlichem Stimmenmaterial zu versorgen.

Preface Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s oratorio Elijah (Elias) op. 70 is, along with its companion piece St. Paul (Paulus) op. 36, arguably the composer’s opus magnum. While St. Paul, which preceded its fellow piece by about ten years, deals with a New Testament subject, the later piece draws upon the Old Testament story of the biblical prophet Elijah. Furthermore, it documents more clearly than opus 36 the strong links between Mendelssohn’s first artistic home, Germany, and his second, England – ties which he felt obligated to and which he cultivated very vigorously from the late 1820s on.

On a more general level, there can hardly be any doubt today that Elijah ranks as the most important work of its genre in the 19th century. With St. Paul, Mendelssohn had infused the oratorio tradition with a vital new spirit; the aesthetic appreciation of the genre had waned considerably since the stellar creations of George Frideric Handel and Joseph Haydn. The survival of the genre in the German-speaking territories had been ensured by Friedrich Schneider, who wrote many oratorios and achieved notable success with his Das Weltgericht of 1819. By contrast, the great classical composers Mozart and Beethoven had shown little interest in the genre. Yet – or perhaps because of this – there seems to have been a growing interest in new oratorios among music lovers in the mid 1830s.

Mendelssohn attributed this to the quality of the vocal societies of that time. During the initial phase of his new oratorio project, Mendelssohn carried on an intensive correspondence with his diplomat friend Carl Klingemann in London. In a letter to Klingemann dated 30 April / 1 May 1837, thus a good eleven months after the first performance of St. Paul, Mendelssohn writes: “[...] Seeing that vocal societies nowadays are accomplished and are longing for new works, I would like to give them something that I feel should be better than my previous oratorio; you will help me here and send me a new one.”1 In the same letter, however, while explaining his rather precipitate decision to consider writing a new oratorio, the composer also mentions a second motive – one that elucidates his poetics: “[...] I am becoming increasingly convinced that it is mistaken to imagine that you can leave your mark with only one work; this must take place unremittingly in a sequence of works, out of which – assuming they are all of serious intent – the best one emerges. This is why I wish to write something in the church style again soon, as there are still no prospects for an opera [...].”2 Plans for a new oratorio were already being forged at the 18th Niederrheinisches Musikfest in Düsseldorf, where St. Paul was given its first public performance under Mendelssohn’s direction on 22 May 1836. The mention of Elijah in Klingemann’s letter of 10 March 1837 allows us to infer that the subject of the work was already being debated at this time: “[...] On my next free day, I shall plunge into Elijah. I have no doubts whatsoever that this is the perfect subject. I had already begun to make preliminary studies for it following my return from the Rhine. I examined his life – in non-biblical depictions as well – and feel that it is a powerful, solid subject in which there should be, above all, no lack of mighty choruses.”3 Mendelssohn was determined to write a second oratorio, and the choice of its biblical topic was secondary. The composer’s level of interest here was such that in his letter to Klingemann of 12 August 1836,4 he even jokingly made the totally absurd suggestion that they should also consider Og of Bashan along with Elijah and St. Peter. 5 In another letter to Klingemann, this one dated 18 to 20 February 1837, the topic was still open to discussion, but the composer made it clear to his friend that he was very serious about writing

the work and in obtaining a libretto from Klingemann as a wedding gift: “[...] Over the coming weeks write me a libretto for a biblical oratorio that I could compose during the course of the summer. I mentioned two subjects to you back then, St. Peter and Elijah, which I both equally like. [...] Consider the kind of oratorio I would write, and send me an appropriate one. This will be my wedding gift;6 it would be the most precious thing you could give me, so please don’t disappoint me.”7 Since Klingemann had already set his heart on Elijah from the very start, it was only natural that Mendelssohn turned to other potential librettists to discuss alternatives. The first person the composer addressed was Julius Schubring, who had already supported him in formulating the text of St. Paul. In the lengthy deliberations which he submitted to the Dessau pastor on 13 July 1837, the center of interest was no longer the prophet Elijah, whose name was not once mentioned, but the apostle St. Peter. Nevertheless, the plan of an oratorio on St. Peter remained a mere episode in the Elijah saga.

Between August 1836 and April 1837 Mendelssohn corresponded several times with Klingemann. As they exchanged views about the oratorio libretto, the prophet Elijah began to project himself into the forefront more and more clearly. On another of Mendelssohn’s trips to England, in August and September 1837,8 the composer even held two work sessions with Klingemann9 which yielded a six-page manuscript10 written by the diplomat, the very first text material for the oratorio. Surprisingly, the personal, on-site collaboration of the two men triggered no further impulses. In the following months, the composer had to remind his friend repeatedly and with increasing urgency about the elaboration of the libretto, and received nothing but dilatory answers. Finally, on 13 July 1838, Klingemann ushered in the end of their collaboration on this project in a cover letter to the parcel he sent to Leipzig which contained all of his Elijah material: next to the aforementioned sixpage draft of August 1837, another manuscript comprising a respectable 18 pages.11 Mendelssohn thus once again turned to Julius Schubring in order to continue the work on the libretto on the basis of the drafts sketched by and with Klingemann, the prerequisite for commencing the compositional work. After a slight initial hesitation, Schubring embarked upon his collaboration on 28 October 1838 with a carefully worded draft letter12 that has a great deal in common with Klingemann’s first six-page manuscript. This letter was the first of a series of drafts that were to travel to and from between Leipzig and Dessau until 6 December 1838 in a “postally conducted” exchange. These contacts reached their climax at the very outset, when Schubring sent Mendelssohn no fewer than three lengthy manuscripts on 28 and 30 October and on 1 November. After this euphoric start, however, the layingdown of the libretto’s contents and dramaturgical concept presented ever greater problems.

In his letter of 6 December, Mendelssohn summarized the core of the dissent on the contents of the libretto: basically, it was the question – often thematized at that time – of the appropriate role of dramatic content within the genre of the oratorio. In addition, Schubring insisted on including New Testament texts,13 which Mendelssohn utterly refused to consider and, consequently, ignored.

It is a moot point, however, whether the differences of views between Mendelssohn and Schubring were so unbridgeable that they alone were responsible for the breakup of this cooperation as well, which brought the Elijah project to a standstill for the following six years.

We do know, however, that Mendelssohn consulted Schubring once again in view of elaborating the libretto towards the end of 1845, when he was in the midst of composing the oratorio; the aforementioned dissent was apparently not considered as serious enough to prevent the resumption of their collaboration. One might also speculate that the composer had

become weary of struggling to find a usable oratorio text in the past two and a half years, and that his initial enthusiasm for the project was flagging. He needed a fresh plan, a new impulse.

Once again, the decisive stimulus to put the old oratorio plan into effect came from the British Isles. On 22 June 1845, Joseph Moore, the director of the Birmingham Musical Festival – the event at which Mendelssohn had conducted his St. Paul and other concerts in 183714 – informed the composer of his intention to commission another oratorio from him for the 1846 edition of the festival. Mendelssohn eventually accepted the offer in conjunction with the subject he set his heart on, but could not promise, even in October 1845, that he would complete the work on time. At that time, however, he had been working on the oratorio with great diligence, for there was still a great deal to be done – almost everything, in fact. The only movement existing at that time was an early version of the double quartet “Denn er hat seinen Engeln befohlen über dir” 15, of which the composer had sent a dedicated copy to Prussia’s King Friedrich Wilhelm IV in August 1844. The rest of the work on the version given at the first performance, i. e. the actual musical composition, was carried out in the remaining ten months.

We know little about the chronology of the actual unfolding of the music’s genesis.

Although there is no lack of documents from secondary sources – above all recollections of friends and colleagues – there are few truly reliable documents, especially from the composer himself; moreover, they concern almost exclusively the final phase of the work.

Mendelssohn thus wrote to Julius Schubring on 23 May 1846: “[...] I have now completely finished the first part, and of the second 6 to 8 numbers have already been set to paper.”16 On 9 July of that year, he optimistically reported to his brother Paul that Elijah would be completed within a few days.17 Nevertheless, the oratorio was not finished until one month later, when the composer inscribed in his autograph score the – provisional – completion date Leipzig, 11 August 1846.

Yet it would be foolish to assume that Mendelssohn was able to concentrate solely on the music of the oratorio during the aforementioned months, given his heavy work load at the Gewandhaus and the Leipzig Conservatory. There were still many problems with the libretto, and it needed a revision or even a rewriting. Again, the composer contacted Julius Schubring and, on 16 December 1845, sent him an original draft of the text which broadly corresponded to the final version in Part One, but was incomplete and fragmentary in many passages of Part Two. The two men met in Dessau in early January 1846 to discuss the problems at hand, and on the 9th of that month, Schubring returned Mendelssohn’s draft with extensive comments and revision ideas of which the composer, however, adopted only very few. Not-withstanding, Mendelssohn requested the advice of the Dessau pastor again on 23 May 1846: “[...] What is now missing at several passages in Part Two is a choice of truly striking biblical passages, which I now hope you will provide me with!”18 This time as well, the composer incorporated only very few of Schubring’s suggestions. It must be assumed that the libretto was ultimately written by Mendelssohn himself.

If we take into account that the work was not completed before 11 August, thus a good two weeks before the world premiere on 26 August, then we can truly understand why the composer qualified this concert as “slapdash” a few months later.19 Yet what we can also better evaluate under these circumstances is the nearly superhuman commitment and motivation demanded from all who were responsible for the premiere performance at the Birmingham Musical Festival, whether organizers or interpreters, in order to bring about – and ultimately achieve – the desired success. The tremendous efforts of William Bartholomew 20 must be singled out here, since he not only provided the English translation of the libret-

to, but also wrote out the engraver’s masters for the printing of both the libretto and the choral parts. 21 In the reception history of Elijah, the first performance of the oratorio given in public and led by the composer is rightly regarded as the “Ur-performance” in an emphatic sense: this is where the cornerstone was laid for the overwhelming and lasting success of the oratorio, a triumph that was responsible for the rapid spread of interest in further performances throughout Europe.

If, however, we proceed from a teleology of the work genesis, i. e. from the evolution of the work of art up to the properties which have been consciously determined and fully authorized by the creative artist, then the Birmingham concert must be seen as a provisional first performance. It gave the composer the unique opportunity of monitoring both in a rehearsal and concert situation, and with the actual sound of a public concert, that which had been set to paper up to then with respect to musical form, dramaturgical layout and feasibility of performance. This allowed him to draw conclusions for changes, if necessary. Such a concrete test phase perfectly suited Mendelssohn’s compositional practice of authorizing the printing of his works only after a thorough revision.

Several documents suggest that Mendelssohn sketched the definitive revision of the oratorio while still in Birmingham, and discussed it with others there. There is no doubt, however, that he proceeded to work on it with great intensity after his return to Leipzig, since on 26 September 1846, exactly one month after the world premiere, he was able to dispatch to London a parcel containing eight numbers of the production master for the piano reduction. At about the same time, he received a new offer from England concerning the oratorio: the Sacred Harmonic Society invited the composer to conduct the work in London’s Exeter Hall as well, the seat of the society. The letter stated that the performance would take place in April 1847, a date that remained unchanged throughout the entire further planning.

From the very start, the elaboration of the final version of Elijah was undertaken in view of the publication of the work and went hand in hand with the production of the English piano-vocal score. The reason for this tandem measure was an agreement which Mendelssohn had concluded with his English publisher J. J. Ewer & Co. in London and its director Edward Buxton on the one hand, and his German publisher N. Simrock in Bonn and its director Peter Joseph Simrock on the other. Whereas the printing of the orchestral parts and the bilingual score was entrusted to Simrock, the piano reduction and the choral parts – with one version in English and the other in German – were to be printed jointly by both publishing houses, but produced earlier by Ewer & Co. The London publisher would then provide proofs of its corrected engraving plates of the choral parts and piano reduction to Simrock, who would consequently have a reliable source for his own engraving, as well as the opportunity to make further corrections in the text.

The priority accorded to the printing of the English piano reduction led in the following months to an extensive correspondence with Buxton as well as with Bartholomew. With Buxton, the composer dealt with the organizational matters that arise while preparing a musical publication; with Bartholomew, Mendelssohn continued the discussion about the most suitable formulation of the English text and, in this context, about the correct declamation.

Contrary to the genesis of the early version, the great diversity and quantity of source material for the piano reduction which Mendelssohn sent to London allow us to retrace the unfolding of the compositional work on the final version perhaps not seamlessly, but at least in broad strokes:

In the meantime, N. Simrock had also begun preparing the print, and in a keystone letter of 15 January 1847, Mendelssohn explained in detail to the publisher his ideas concerning the further course of action. It is worth noting here that even at this point in time, the composer had already laid down the work’s subheading and opus number. Particularly revealing is the composer’s request that the printing of the score should diverge from the usual practice: instead of being based on a master score (autograph or copy), it should make use of the orchestral parts (instruments) and the piano reduction (vocal parts). Simrock graciously complied with all of Mendelssohn’s requests and hastened to carry out the printing as perfectly as possible in each domain. The piano-vocal score was published in early July 1847, the orchestral parts in early September and the score in early October of that year.

Of course, the pace of the printing process could have been accelerated if it hadn’t been necessary to provide new part material for the concerts scheduled in England; the revision of the work had given rise to so many emendations that the parts used at the premiere performance in Birmingham were no longer usable. Mendelssohn initially hoped to bring all the printed orchestral parts with him to London, but ultimately had to settle for the printed string parts alone.

The performance material was not the only obstacle that had to be surmounted for the English performances. Practically all the solo parts were to be sung by different singers than the ones in Birmingham, which meant that they had to be rehearsed anew. Since the composer was not able to arrive any earlier than the 12th or 13th of April, he only had three or four days to make the final preparations for the concert on 16 April.

The strain of the organizational and artistic tasks awaiting the composer during his first days in London hardly abated over the following two weeks. Indeed, the oratorio was not to be given only one performance, as in 1846, but altogether six: after the London premiere on 16 April, the work was to be played in Manchester on 20 April, then repeated in London on 23 April, given in Birmingham on 27 April and finally repeated twice again in London, on 28 and 30 April.

Mendelssohn was more than adequately compensated for his efforts by the overwhelming success he garnered with the performances. Particularly in London, where the four performances of the oratorio must be seen as an unmistakable confirmation of the audience’s

enthusiasm, Mendelssohn was able to consolidate the reputation he enjoyed in the British Isles as a composer, conductor, pianist and organist. This esteem was crowned, as it were, by an encomium inscribed in German by Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, the consort of Queen Victoria, into his libretto after he attended the performance of 23 April. In the English translation authorized by Buckingham Palace, the encomium reads: “To the Noble Artist, who, surrounded by the Baal-worship of debased art, has been able, by his genius and science, to preserve faithfully, like another Elijah, the worship of true art, and once more to accustom our ear, amid the whirl of empty, frivolous sounds, to the pure tones of sympathetic feeling and legitimate harmony: to the Great Master, who makes us conscious of the unity of his conception, through the whole maze of his creation, from the soft whispering to the mighty raging of the elements. Inscribed in grateful remembrance

by Albert. Buckingham Palace, April 24, 1847.“22 After a good five months absence,23 Mendelssohn returned to Leipzig on 17 September 1847. As in the preceding two years, the composer’s attention was now chiefly focused on Elijah during the following seven weeks and up to his death on 4 November; now, however, he was intent on completing the preparations for the printing of the score and for the first German-language performances. 24 Two concerts had been scheduled under the direction of the composer: one in Berlin in mid October and one in Vienna in early November. Both had to be postponed and recast due to the composer’s ultimately fatal illness. The first performance in Berlin was directed by Julius Schneider on 3 November, and the Vienna performance by Johann Baptist Schmiedel on 14 November.

The composer had more success regarding the score, and even managed to bring the story of Elijah to a fitting end with a memorable gesture that was perhaps inspired by Prince Albert’s words of praise. He had asked the publisher Simrock several times to send him two advance copies of the score upon its publication, as he wanted to offer one to Prussia’s King Friedrich Wilhelm IV before the official release. As Crown Prince, the King had been the dedicatee of the first edition of the Concert Overtures opp. 21, 26 and 27 in 1835. After Simrock sent the two requested scores to Leipzig in early October, the presentation copy was dispatched to the monarch in Berlin on 17 October 1847. But since Mendelssohn was too weak to pen the dedicatory letter himself, he dictated it to his wife Cécile and solely appended his signature to it. The King instructed his courtiers to “graciously respond” to the sending of the score, but then decided to personally express his thanks in his own hand: “I am doubly saddened by the news of your illness, for it has prevented me from seeing you as I had expected to, and has hindered your much-anticipated performance of Elijah. My most heartfelt wish is that your health will soon allow you to appear before us and conduct your Elijah. [...].”25 The letter was sent to Leipzig on 4 November; Mendelssohn did not live to see it.

In view of the performances of the definitive version in England planned for the second half of April 1847, he wrote to Klingemann on 10 March of that year: “[...] But please ask Buxton whether it might not be possible to postpone the whole Elijah performance – which threatens to become another slapdash one – until the autumn [...]” (Briefwechsel mit Klingemann [note 1], p. 325).

Mendelssohn had been in contact with Bartholomew since 1841 in connection with the translations of other works into English.

Mendelssohn’s two oratorios present an exceptional situation: the choral parts were produced first and were already available in print at the first performances. This was done above all so that the choral masses expected for the first performances would have sufficient and standardized part material.

His stay in England was followed by a somewhat lengthy journey through Switzerland.

The first German-language performance of the oratorio took place in Hamburg on 7 October 1847 without the participation of the composer; it was conducted by Karl Krebs.
