Vorwort Musik ist für Robert Schumann „die höhere Potenz der Poesie“.1 Das Romantische liegt für ihn nicht nur „in den Figuren oder Formen“ der Musik selbst, sondern in einer poetischen Idee, die „unbewusst ne­ ben der musikalischen Phantasie“ wirkt und auch „das Auge […], die­ ses immer tätige Organ“ mit einschließt.2 Schumann, der Romantiker, ein Geistesverwandter von Byrons Helden Manfred? Wie bei kaum einem anderen Komponisten wohnen zwei Seelen in Schumanns Brust, die musikalische Seele des „Componisten“ und die poetische des „Dichters“. Zwei Seiten, die sich gegenseitig durchdringen und be­ fruchten, die für ihn gleichzeitig Quelle der Inspiration wie auch Quelle innerer Konflikte sind. Wie alle Romantiker fasziniert Schumann die Welt der Phantasien, Träume und Ahnungen. Vor allem die dunklen Seiten der Seele beschäftigen ihn, so dass ihm Byrons Manfred, der Prototyp des innerlich zerrissenen, romantischen Helden, fast zwangs­ läufig ins Visier gerät.3 Wie aber ein Lesedrama in ein Musikdrama übertragen, wie die innere Bühne einer solchen Figur auf eine äußere Bühne bringen? Dafür schwebt Schumann „etwas ganz Neues und Un­ erhörtes“4 vor. Er träumt von einer neuen Gattung. Seine wichtigsten Traumhelden in dieser Zeit, insbesondere im „Opernjahr“ 1848: Byrons Manfred, Goethes Faust, Hebbels Genoveva und die Mignon aus Goethes Wilhelm Meister. Zusammengenommen bilden sie ein litera­ risches Traum­Quartett, das Schumann zu Werken inspiriert, denen bei aller Unterschiedlichkeit eines gemeinsam ist: die Idee der szenischen Darbietung, sei es in imaginärer Form im Konzertsaal, sei es real auf der Opernbühne.

Unmittelbar nach Beendigung des „Operngedichts“5 Genoveva am 4. August 1848 wendet sich Schumann also dem „Dramatischen Gedicht“ Manfred zu, „was ihn außerordentlich begeisterte […], um es für die Bühne wirksam zu machen.“6 Noch vor der Vertonung der eigentlichen Handlung komponiert und instrumentiert er in der zwei­ ten Oktoberhälfte 1848 die Ouvertüre. Die Niederschrift ist bereits am 31. Oktober 1848 abgeschlossen.7 Neben der szenischen Realisierung des Gesamtwerks, die Schu­ mann im November 1851 seinem „verehrten Freund“ Franz Liszt nahelegt, hatte Schumann aber für die Ouvertüre von Anfang an den Konzertsaal im Sinn. „Wir haben gestern die Ouverture zu Manfred pro­ birt; meine alte Liebe zur Dichtung ist dadurch wieder wach geworden.

Wie schön, wenn wir das gewaltige Zeugniß höchster Dichterkraft den Menschen vorführen könnten. […] Das Ganze müßte man dem Publi­ kum nicht als Oper oder Singspiel oder Melodram, sondern als ‚drama­ tisches Gedicht mit Musik‘ ankündigen.“8 Wie bei der Genoveva­Ouvertüre geht auch der Manfred­Ouvertüre eine konzertante Aufführung der szenischen Realisierung des Gesamt­ werks voraus. Wie dort erwirkt er eine separate, für konzertante Zwecke gedachte Druckausgabe. Die Erstausgaben von Partitur und Stimmen der Manfred­Ouvertüre erscheinen Ende Oktober 1852 bei Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig, die Erstausgabe des zweihändigen Klavierauszugs folgt im Januar 1853.

Am 14. März 18529 erklingt die Manfred­Ouvertüre erstmals unter Schumanns Leitung in einem Konzert im Leipziger Gewandhaus, nach­ dem er sie bereits in Düsseldorf einem zweimaligen Probedurchlauf unterzogen hatte.10 Welche Fassung das Gewandhaus­Publikum zu hö­ ren bekam, diejenige des Autographs oder die revidierte Fassung des Erstdrucks, lässt sich nicht mit Bestimmtheit feststellen.11 Schumann hatte die Ouvertüre nachträglich einer vor allem die Instrumentation betreffenden Revision unterzogen. Bei den Zuhörern rief sie beim ers­ ten Hören unterschiedliche Reaktionen hervor. Während Clara Schu­ mann sie als „das Herrlichste, was Robert geschaffen“ bezeichnete,12 war Richard Pohl, der spätere Verfasser einer „verbindenden Dichtung für Concert­Aufführungen“13, enttäuscht über die seiner Meinung nach zu schwachen Ovationen, vor allem aber darüber, dass das Publikum sie „zu ernst“ fand.14 Die Lokalpresse würdigte die Ouvertüre immer­ hin als „ein Werk von edelstem Inhalt und schönster Form. […] Alles ist mit lebendigen Farben ausgemalt und läßt den Wunsch nach dem

Kennenlernen der ganzen Musik zu diesem Stück entstehen.“15 Schu­ mann legte sie Liszt mit den Worten ans Herz: „Ich halte sie […] für eines meiner kräftigsten Kinder.“16 Schumanns Traum von einer musikalisch­szenischen Realisierung des Manfred ging zwar mit Liszts Aufführungen des Gesamtwerks in Weimar am 13. und 17. Juni 1852 in Erfüllung, aber krankheitsbedingt konnte Schumann den Aufführungen nicht beiwohnen. Ob sie seinen Vorstellungen entsprochen hätten, wissen wir nicht. Tatsache ist, dass die neue Gattung für Schumann und die Nachwelt auch deshalb ein Traum blieb, weil sie sich gegen die wirkmächtige Realität der Wag­ nerschen Musikdramen nicht durchsetzen konnte. Unabhängig davon übten Byrons Gedicht und Schumanns Vertonung des Manfred im 19. Jahrhundert eine nachhaltige Wirkung aus, deren Spuren sich bei­ spielsweise in Werken Tschaikowskys und Mahlers ablesen lassen.17 Dank des Einsatzes so bedeutender Dirigenten wie Hermann Levi eroberte die Ouvertüre einen festen Platz im Konzertrepertoire als eines der – wie Clara Schumann meinte – „poetischsten und fast ergreifendsten Stücke Roberts“.18 Die vorliegende erste textkritische Ausgabe der Manfred­Ouvertüre basiert auf dem von Schumann revidierten Erstdruck von Partitur und Stimmen. Über Details der Quellen und der Edition gibt der Kritische Bericht Auskunft. Verlag und Herausgeber danken den dort genannten Institutionen für die Bereitstellung der Quellen.

Preface Music for Robert Schumann is “the higher power of poetry.”1 To him what is Romantic lies not only “in the figures or forms” of music itself, but in a poetic idea that acts “unconsciously beyond the mu­ sical fantasy” and also involves “the eye […], this ever active organ.”2 Schumann the Romantic, a kindred spirit of Byron’s hero Manfred?

As with hardly any other composer, Schumann was torn between two spirits, the musical soul of the “composer” and the poetical soul of the “poet.” Two sides, penetrating and fertilizing each other, at the same time the source of inspiration for him, as well as the source of inner conflict. Like all Romantics, the world of fantasies, dreams, and presentiments fascinated Schumann. Above all, the soul’s dark sides preoccupied him so that almost inevitably he set his sights on Byron’s Manfred, the prototype of the romantic hero at odds with himself.3 But how to turn a closet drama into a music drama, how to stage the inner arena of such a figure? For that Schumann had in mind “something entirely new and unheard­of.”4 He was dreaming of a new genre. His most significant dream heroes at this time, especially in the “opera year” 1848, were Byron’s Manfred, Goethe’s Faust, Heb­ bel’s Genoveva, and Mignon from Goethe’s Wilhelm Meister. Altogether they form a literary dream quartet inspiring Schumann to works which despite their diversity have in common the idea of a staged presenta­ tion, whether in imaginary form in the concert hall or for real on the opera stage.

Immediately after concluding his “operatic poem”5 Genoveva on 4 August 1848, Schumann turned to the “dramatic poem” Manfred, “which he was extraordinarily enthusiastic about staging effectively.”6 Even before setting the actual plot to music, he composed and orchestrated the overture during the second half of October 1848 and had already finished writing it down on 31 October 1848.7 Besides staging the whole work as he suggested to his “dear friend” Franz Liszt in November 1851, Schumann had had from the outset the concert hall in mind for the overture. “Yesterday we tried out the over­ ture to Manfred; thus my old love of poetry has just been re­awakened.

How lovely if we could show people the mighty testimony of the highest poetic power. […] But it would all have to be announced to the public as a ‘dramatic poem with music,’ not as an opera or singspiel or melodrama.”8 As with the Genoveva overture, a concert performance of the Manfred overture also preceded the dramatic realization of the whole work. Likewise, he obtained a separate printed edition intended for concert purposes. The first editions of the Manfred overture score and parts were published by Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig at the end of October 1852, the first edition of the two-hand piano reduction fol­ lowed in January 1853.

The Manfred overture was first heard, conducted by Schumann, on 14 March 18529 in a Leipzig Gewandhaus concert, after having already been through two rehearsals in Düsseldorf.10 We do not know for certain whether the version the Gewandhaus audience heard was that of the autograph or the revised version of the first print.11 Schumann had later subjected the overture to revision especially concerning the instrumentation. At first hearing it gave rise to various reactions from the listeners. Whereas Clara Schumann described it as “the most splendid thing that Robert created,”12 Richard Pohl, later author of a “unifying text for concert performances,”13 was disappointed by the ovations that were in his estimation too slight, but above all by the fact that the audience found it “too serious.”14 The local press at least ac­ knowledged the overture as “a work of the noblest content and most beautiful form. […] Everything is painted in lively colors and gives rise to the desire to become familiar with the music of the whole piece.”15 Schumann entrusted it to Liszt with the words: “I think it is […] one of my strongest children.”16 Schumann’s dream of a musically­dramatically staged Manfred came true in fact with Liszt’s performances of the complete work in Weimar on 13 and 17 June 1852, but due to illness he was unable to

attend the performances. We do not know whether they would have met his expectations. The fact is that the new genre also remained a dream for Schumann and posterity because it could not prevail against the powerful reality of the Wagnerian music drama. Regard­ less, Byron’s poem and Schumann’s musical setting of Manfred had a lasting effect in the 19th century; traces of it are evident, for example, in works by Tchaikovsky and Mahler.17 Thanks to the commitment of such prominent conductors as Hermann Levi, the overture gained a secure place in the concert repertoire as one of the – so Clara Schu­ mann thought – “most poetic and nearly most poignant of Robert’s pieces.”18 The present, first text-critical edition of the Manfred overture is based on the first print of the score and parts revised by Schumann.
