Vorwort Als Johann Kuhnau nach einundzwanzig Jahren im Thomaskantorat am 5. Juni 1722 gestorben war, wurde er in einem Leipziger Jahrbuch mit einem ausführlichen Nachruf gewürdigt. Hier heißt es: „Was er nächstdem an Musicalischen Kirchen-Stücken, insonderheit seit anno 1701, da er Cantor und Director Musices worden, componiret habe, mag wohl schwerlich zu zehlen seyn, gestalt er bey seinen häuffigen musicalischen Aufführungen sich fremder Composition niemahls oder doch gar selten bedienet, da hingegen mit seiner Arbeit er andern vielfältig aushelffen müssen.“ Von diesem, einst umfangreichen, Werkkomplex – der denjenigen seines Amtsnachfolgers Johann Sebastian Bach quantitativ in den Schatten stellte – hat sich nur ein Bruchteil erhalten. Etwas mehr als dreißig „Kirchenstücke“ aus Kuhnaus Feder haben die Zeiten über­dauert.

Sie liegen handschriftlich in mittel- und norddeutschen Biblio­theken vor: überwiegend innerhalb der Sammlung Becker (Stadtbibliothek Leipzig), in den Musikalien der Grimmaer Fürstenschule (Landes­bibliothek Dresden) und der Sammlung Bokemeyer (Staats­bibliothek zu Berlin).

Die Auto­graphe und Originalstimmensätze darunter lassen sich an einer Hand abzählen, und bei manchen Sekundärquellen ist die Richtigkeit der Autorenangabe „di Kuhnau“ durchaus zweifelhaft. Dennoch ist das überlieferte kirchenmusikalische Schaffen Kuhnaus heute für Kenner und Liebhaber barocker Kirchenmusik, aber auch für Laien und professio­ nelle Musiker gleichermaßen von besonderem Reiz, und dies aus mehreren Gründen.

Kuhnaus Werke, entstanden zwischen den frühen 1680er Jahren – als Kuhnau noch Schüler in Zittau und Dresden und ab 1684 Organist der Leipziger Thomaskirche war – und den späten 1710er Jahren, fallen stilistisch ausgesprochen vielgestaltig aus. Das Spektrum reicht von geistlichen Arien und Spruchkonzerten des 17. Jahrhunderts über Choralbearbeitungen, experimentellen Mischformen bis hin zu Kirchen­kantaten

Neumeister’scher Prägung. Und die Mannigfaltigkeit von Kuhnaus Tonsprache, die mal dramatisch/theatralisch, mal fließend arios und andächtig daherkommt, straft alle diejenigen Lügen, die den Kirchen­ komponisten Kuhnau gern als einen angeblich rückwärts­gewandten Künstler abtun, der sich den musikalischen Neuerungen des frühen 18. Jahrhunderts vehement verweigert hätte.

Dieses von der älteren Forschung gezeichnete Porträt ist ein Zerrbild, das sich aus Dokumenten zu einigen Grabenkämpfen ergibt, die sich der Thomaskantor Kuhnau – leider wenig geschickt – mit der jungen innovativen Leipziger Musikerszene an Neukirche und Opernhaus lieferte, namentlich mit den aufstrebenden Studenten Georg Philipp Telemann, Johann David Heinichen und Johann Friedrich Fasch.

Die nunmehr angegangene Neuausgabe aller erhaltenen geistlichen Werke Kuhnaus soll dieses falsche Bild korrigieren und den Komponisten aus der Ecke des angeblich „Musicalischen Horribilicribrifax“ herausholen, in die er bereits früh gestellt wurde. Denn Kuhnaus Kirche­nmusik stellt dem in jungen Jahren erfolgreichen galanten Roman­schreiber, inno­vativen Clavierkomponisten und sogar Operisten ein in jederlei Hinsicht ebenbürtiges Zeugnis aus. Ein Zeugnis, das außer­dem deutlich werden lässt, weshalb ein Telemann später behaupten konnte, die Feder des weithin als „Polyhistoris in arte Musica“ gerühmten Kuhnau habe ihm einst als Muster gedient: um daran seinen eigenen Kirchenstil zu modellieren. Und vor allem wird durch die Neuausgabe von Kuhnaus Vokal­werken endlich eine wichtige musikalische Facette der gattungsgeschichtlich so spannenden Übergangsphase zwischen Geistlichem Konzert des 17. Jahrhunderts und spätbarocker Kirchenkantate zugänglich, die in ihrer Bedeutung kaum überschätzt werden kann.

Zur Edition Einleitung Das Ziel des Herausgebers ist, das überlieferte Notenbild möglichst quellennah wiederzugeben. Aufgrund der angestrebten praktischen Verwendbarkeit der Ausgabe wurde jedoch einigen behutsamen – stets transparenten – Eingriffen der Vorzug vor einer reinen Transkription des Quellenmaterials gegeben. Sämtliche Herausgeberzusätze sind im Noten­bild durch eckige Klammern kenntlich gemacht, Emendationen und Konjekturen werden im Kritischen Bericht angeführt und diskutiert.

Allgemeines Werktitel und Überschriften werden in moderner Form notiert, die originalen Angaben werden im Kritischen Bericht mitgeteilt. Satzüberschriften und -bezeichnungen werden beibehalten, deren Schreibung jedoch ebenfalls modernisiert. Emendationen erscheinen in eckigen Klammern, Originalangaben gegebenenfalls im Kritischen Bericht. Aus Gründen der Praktikabilität werden die einzelnen Sätze eines Werkes durchnummeriert, die Taktzählung beginnt bei jedem dadurch entstehenden Einzelsatz von neuem, wobei ausdrücklich darauf hingewiesen wird, dass eine Nummerierung in der Quelle nicht, eine Taktzählung nur äußerst selten vorkommt.

Die Partituranordnung wird wie folgt gewählt: Blechbläser und Pauken – Holzbläser – Streicher – Singstimmen – Continuo/Generalbassstimme. Innerhalb jedes Satzes/jeder Nummer bleibt die Anzahl der Rastrale gleich. Besetzungsangaben werden zu Beginn jedes Satzes in moderner, italienischer Form mitgeteilt. Originale Angaben erscheinen, falls abweichend, im Kritischen Bericht.

Die Schlüsselung folgt weitgehend der Quelle; bei Eingriffen aus Gründen der Praktikabilität oder der Angleichung von ursprünglicher Notation (beispielsweise aufgrund unterschiedlicher Stimmton­höhen) erscheinen die originalen Angaben im Vorsatz. Wurde eine Stimme ledig­lich in moderne Schlüssel übertragen, wird nur die originale Schlüsselung, ohne weitere Angaben, mitgeteilt. Dies betrifft in der Regel vor allem Vokal­stimmen, die generell in heute gebräuchlichen, modernen Schlüsseln wiedergegeben werden.

Noten und Zeichen Notenwerte werden der Quelle entsprechend wiedergegeben. Die originalen Taktzeichen bleiben erhalten. Taktstriche werden insofern modernisiert, als damit zusammengehörige Akkoladen der Partitur – Streicher, Bläser, Vokalstimmen – verdeutlicht werden; Schlussstriche u. ä. werden in der heute gebräuchlichen Form vereinheitlicht. Einzelne fehlende Takt-

IV IV striche werden stillschweigend ergänzt. Der Taktstrich bedingt sowohl Teilung als auch Anbindung von Notenwerten, die durch Augmentations­ punkt oder ähnliche Schreibweise in der Quelle über die Taktgrenze hinausreichen.

Bögen werden der Quelle entsprechend wiedergegeben, Ergän­ zungen aus Analogie­ oder anderen Gründen werden so sparsam wie möglich vorgenommen und erscheinen in gestrichelter Form. Vortrags­ bezeichnungen, Tempoangaben, Artikulations­ und Dynamische Zeichen werden in egalisierter Form wiedergegeben (beispielsweise „Allegro“ statt „allegro“ oder der altertümlichen Schreibweise „alleg.“, „all.“ o. ä.; „p“ statt „piano“, „p:“, „pian“ o. ä.). Ergänzungen des Herausgebers (beispiels­ weise aus Analogiegründen) erscheinen jedoch in eckigen Klammern.

Verzierungen werden der Quelle entsprechend wiedergegeben, typo­ graphisch jedoch modernen Gewohnheiten angepasst (z. B. t statt „t.“).

Die Balkensetzung wird, wo sie keinen eindeutig artikulatorischen Charakter hat, ebenfalls an die moderne Notation angepasst. Schluss­ fermaten werden stillschweigend in allen Stimmen ergänzt, sofern sie in mindestens einer Stimme – und dort eindeutig gesetzt – in der Quelle nachzuweisen sind.

Akzidentien und Tonarten Die originale Tonartenvorzeichnung bleibt erhalten, Abweichungen erscheinen im Kritischen Bericht und sind überdies aus dem Vorsatz ersichtlich. Transponierende Instrumente verbleiben in der Regel in der notierten Tonlage, Abweichungen werden ebenfalls im Kritischen Be­ richt und als Vorsatz mitgeteilt.

Akzidentien gelten, wie allgemein üblich, stets für den ganzen Takt. In der Quelle vereinzelt redundant auftauchende Akzidentien innerhalb ein und desselben Taktes entfallen daher stillschweigend. Der in der Noten­ schrift des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts als bekannt vorausgesetzten und daher nicht ausdrücklich notierten Auflösung von Akzidentien innerhalb eines Taktes wird durch behutsames Hinzufügen von (Warn-)Akzidentien entsprochen. Dies erfolgt ebenso stillschweigend wie die Ergän­

zung solcher Akzidentien, die in der Quelle über einen Taktstrich hinaus Geltung besitzen, sowie weiterer vom Herausgeber behutsam hinzuge­ fügter Warnakzidentien. Zweifelhafte Fälle werden im Kritischen Bericht diskutiert.

Tatsächliche Emendationen erscheinen in eckigen Klammern [k].

Kreuz (k)- und B (j)-Vorzeichen, die die Funktion eines Auflösungszeichens (h) haben, werden stillschweigend als solches notiert.

Generalbass Generalbassziffern erscheinen stets über dem Continuosystem und wer­ den nicht ergänzt. Jedoch erfolgt eine Verteilung auf die entsprechenden Zeitwerte, wo dies nötig und offensichtlich ist. Authentische Wechsel­ schlüssel in der Generalbassstimme werden möglichst ebenfalls durch Schlüsselwechsel kenntlich gemacht, jedoch wird hierfür stillschwei­ gend die Verwendung des Violinschlüssels bevorzugt. Eine Aussetzung der Bezifferung erfolgt hingegen nur in der separaten Orgelstimme.

Vokaltexte Sämtliche Vokaltexte werden aus Gründen der Praktikabilität in der Regel im Normaldruck wiedergegeben, so auch durch idem-Zeichen o. ä. ge­ forderte Textwiederholungen. Außerdem wird der Text in normalisierter Groß- und Kleinschreibung und behutsam modernisierter Orthographie wiedergegeben; für letzteres gilt der Grundsatz der Beibehaltung des originalen Lautstandes. Abkürzungen werden stillschweigend aufgelöst, soweit dies zweifelsfrei möglich ist, ebenso werden Interpunktionen nach modernen Grundsätzen ergänzt.

Sämtliche Divergenzen oder Herausgeberentscheidungen werden im Kritischen Bericht dokumentiert, gegebenenfalls findet sich hier auch der Originaltext in Originallautung.

Preface When Johann Kuhnau died on 5 June 1722 after twenty-one years as cantor of St. Thomas’ Church, tribute was paid to him in a Leipzig yearbook with a detailed obituary.

It said: “The pieces of music that he composed for the church, especially since 1701 when he became cantor and music director, may be difficult to count, for he never or only very rarely made use of other people’s compositions at his frequent musical performances; on the other hand, he often had to help out others with his work.”

Only a fraction of this once extensive complex of works – which quantitatively overshadowed that of his successor in office, Johann Sebastian Bach – has survived to the present day. Just over thirty “church pieces” by Kuhnau have stood the test of time. They are stored in manuscript form in central and northern German libraries: mostly in the Becker Collection (Leipzig Municipal Library), in the music collection of the Grimmaer Prince School (Dresden Municipal Library) and in the Bokemeyer Collection (Berlin State Library). The manuscripts and original parts to these can be counted on the fingers of one hand, and with some secondary sources, the accuracy of the specification of the author – “di Kuhnau” – is rather doubtful.

Nonetheless, Kuhnau’s church music is especially attractive today for connoisseurs and lovers of baroque church music, as it is for amateur and professional musicians alike – for a number of reasons. Kuhnau’s works, composed between the early 1680s – when he was still a pupil in Zittau and Dresden, becoming organist at St. Thomas’ Church in Leipzig starting in 1684 – and the years just before 1720, reveal a wide variety of styles. The spectrum ranges from sacred arias and concertos of the 17th century, chorale adaptations and experimental forms to church cantatas

setting texts by Neumeister. And the diversity of Kuhnau’s musical language, sometimes dramatic and theatrical, at other times flowing, arioso and highly devotional, gives the lie to those who would like to dismiss the church composer Kuhnau as an ostensibly backward-looking artist who vehemently disallowed the musical innovations of the early 18th century.

This portrait, drawn by earlier researchers, is a distorted one, resulting from documents about the trench warfare carried on by the St. Thomas cantor Kuhnau – unfortunately in a maladroit fashion – against the young, innovative Leipzig music scene at the Neukirche and the opera house, namely the aspiring students Georg Philipp Telemann, Johann David Heinichen and Johann Friedrich Fasch.

This new edition of all the surviving sacred works of Kuhnau is intended to correct this erroneous image, and to rescue the composer from the corner of the alleged “musical horribilicribrifax” in which he was placed already at a very early stage. For Kuhnau’s church music provides a testimonial that is, in every respect, on a par with that of the gallant novelist, innovative keyboard composer and even opera composer. It is a testimonial, moreover, that makes clear why Telemann could later maintain that the quill pen of Kuhnau, widely famed as “polyhistoris in arte musica”, had once served him as a model: in order to fashion his own ecclesiastical style after it. And above all, this new edition of Kuhnau’s vocal works makes accessible an important musical facet of the transitional phase between the sacred concertos of the 17th century and the late baroque church cantata – an exciting facet as regards the history of the genre and one whose importance can hardly be overestimated.

Editorial Note Introduction The aim of the editor is to reproduce the notes handed down in a manner as close to their source as possible. Due to the practical usability of the desired edition, however, a few scrupulous interventions were given priority over a pure transcription of the source material. All the additions of the editor have been marked in the notes by brackets; emendations and conjectures are quoted and discussed in the Critical Commentary.

General Information Work titles and headings are notated in modern form; the original indications are disclosed in the Critical Commentary. Movement headings and designations have been retained, but their spelling has also been modernised. Emendations appear in brackets, and original indications are given, where appropriate, in the Critical Commentary. For reasons of practicability, the individual movements of a work are numbered consecutively, the counting of bars beginning anew with each consecutive individual movement, whereby it should be expressly pointed out that numbering does not occur in the source, and the counting of bars only in extremely rare cases.

The arrangement of the score has been chosen as follows: brass and timpani – woodwinds – strings – vocal parts – continuo/thoroughbass part. Within each movement or piece, the number of staves remains the same. Scoring indications are given at the beginning of each movement

in modern Italian. If they differ, original indications appear in the Critical Commentary.

The clefs are reproduced according to the source; with interventions for reasons of practicability or adaptations of original notation (e.g. as a result of different concert pitches), the original information is given in the instrument label. If a part has merely been reproduced in a modern clef, the original clef is simply indicated without any further explanation.

This largely applies to vocal parts, which are generally displayed in the modern, present-day clefs.

Notes and Signs Note values are reproduced in accordance with the source. The original time signatures have been retained. The barlines have been modernised to the extent that the connected great staves of the score – strings, winds, vocal – are clarified. Double bars and similar signs are unified in the customary form used today. Individual missing bar lines have been tacitly added. The barline determines both the division and connection of note values extending beyond the boundary of the bar due to a dotted value or similar notation in the source.

Slurs are reproduced as they appear in the source; additions for reasons of analogy have been undertaken as sparingly as possible and appear in the form of dotted lines. Performance instructions, tempo indications, articulation and dynamic markings have been reproduced in an equalised way (for example “Allegro” instead of “allegro” or the anti-

VI quated spellings “alleg.”, “all.”, etc., “p” instead of “piano”, “p:”, “pian”, etc.).

Additions by the editor (e.g. for reasons of analogy), however, appear in brackets.

Ornaments are reproduced in accordance with the source, but have been typographically adapted to modern habits (e.g. t instead of „t.“).

The beams have also been adapted to modern notation when they have no definite articulatory character. Final fermatas have been tacitly added in all parts, as long as they can be found in at least one part in the source – and unambiguously placed there.

Accidentals and Keys The original key signatures have been retained; deviations from these appear in the Critical Commentary and are, moreover, apparent from the instrument label. Transposing instruments generally remain within the notated range; deviations are also indicated in the Critical Commentary and as an instrument label.

Accidentals always apply to the entire bar, according to standard practice. Individual accidentals that redundantly appear within one and the same bar in the source have therefore been tacitly deleted. The resolution of accidentals within a bar, taken for granted in the notation of the 17th and 18th centuries and therefore not expressly notated, has been complied with by carefully adding (warning-)accidentals. This is done as tacitly as the addition of accidentals that were valid beyond the barline in the source as well as a few warning accidentals, cautiously added by the editor.

Real emandations appear in square brackets [k]. Sharp (k) and flat (j) accidentals that have the function of a natural sign (h) are tacitly notated as such.

Continuo / Figured bass Thoroughbass figures always appear above the continuo system and are not completed. There is, however, a distribution over the corresponding time values wherever this is necessary and clearly evident. Authentic clef-change signs in the continuo have been likewise marked, where possible, by a change in clef, the violin clef being tacitly favoured here. A realisation of the figures, however, is only found in the separate organ part.

Vocal Texts All the vocal texts have been generally reproduced in normal print for reasons of practicability, including text repetitions required due to idem signs or similar indications. In addition, the text has for the most part been adapted to modern spelling as used today; however, there has been no modernisation of original vowel sounds. Abbreviations have been tacitly resolved if possible beyond a shadow of a doubt, and punctuation has been added in accordance with modern guidelines.

All deviations, divergences or editorial decisions have been documented in the Critical Commentary; where appropriate, the original text in the original articulation is also found there.
