Sergej W. Rachmaninow (1873–1943) komponierte die Rapsodie sur un thème de Paganini op. 43 in den Sommermonaten Juli und August des Jahres 1934 in seinem Schweizer Domizil, der direkt am Vierwaldstätter See gelegenen Villa „Senar“. Es gehört zu einer späten Gruppe von Meisterwerken, die nach der Emigration des Komponisten aus Russland im Jahr 1917 und nach langen Jahren vor allem pianistischer Triumphe schließlich zwischen 1931 und 1940 in Frankreich, der Schweiz und, nach Ausbruch des 2. Weltkriegs, in den USA entstanden: die „Corelli-Variationen“ op. 42 (1931), die „Paganini-Rhapsodie“ op. 43 (1934), die 3. Symphonie op. 44 (1935/36) und die Symphonischen Tänze op. 45 (1940).

Das mit Abstand beliebteste und am häufigsten aufgeführte Werk dieser Gruppe ist zweifellos die Rhapsodie, ein Variationenzyklus für Klavier und Orchester über das berühmte Thema aus Niccolò Paganinis Capriccio Nr. 24 für Solovioline, dessen Reiz über die Jahrhunderte zahlreiche Komponisten verfallen sind – Johannes Brahms, Franz Liszt, Eugène Ysaÿe und Witold Lutosławski etwa, um nur die bedeutendsten zu nennen. Ebenfalls in der Rhapsodie verarbeitet ist der berühmte mittelalterliche Hymnus über das Jüngste Gericht, „Dies Irae“, ein von Rachmaninow auch in anderen Werken –der 3. Symphonie, den Symphonischen Tänzen, aber auch schon der früheren symphonischen Dichtung Die Toteninsel und der Kantate Die Glocken – benutztes Thema.

Am 18. August 1934 signierte Rachmaninow das soeben fertiggestellte, heute in seinem Nachlass erhaltene Partiturautograph der „PaganiniRhapsodie“, dessen Ausarbeitung er vermutlich gleich bei seiner Ankunft in Hertenstein in der Villa „Senar“ (ein Akronym aus den Vornamen des Ehepaares Sergej und Natalia Rachmaninow) am 1. Juli des Jahres begonnen hatte.1 Seiner Schwägerin Sophia schrieb er einen Tag nach Abschluss der Arbeit über die intensive Kompositionsphase: „ich habe schon lange nicht mehr geschrieben – aber seit meiner Rückkehr aus Como und Monte Carlo am 1. Juli habe ich gearbeitet, sprichwörtlich Tag und Nacht, wie man so sagt. Dieses Werk ist ziemlich umfangreich, erst gestern spät in der Nacht konnte ich es abschließen. […] Dieses Stück ist für Klavier und Orchester geschrieben, etwa 20–25 Minuten lang. Aber es ist kein ‚Konzert‘! Es trägt den Titel Symphonische Variationen auf ein Thema von Paganini.“2 Doch der finale Titel des Werks war noch nicht gefunden. Wenige Wochen später, am 8. September, nannte er es seinem Freund Wladimir Wilschau gegenüber „Fantasie für Klavier und Orchester in Variationenform auf ein Thema von Paganini“.3 Für die Erstausgabe wählte er dann schließlich einen französischen Titel und nannte die Komposition Rapsodie sur un thème de Paganini Das Werk erlebte seine Premiere in der folgenden Konzertsaison 1934/35 am 7. November im Lyric Theatre in Baltimore unter dem Dirigat von Leopold Stokowski mit dem Philadelphia Orchestra und dem Komponisten am Klavier. Anschließend trat Rachmaninow in den USA und in Europa mehrfach als Solist der Rhapsodie auf. Parallel zur Tournee lief die Druckvorbereitung. Rachmaninow erstellte den Klavierauszug, prüfte die Korrekturabzüge und verfasste Korrekturlisten, in denen er Änderungen festhielt und an den Verlag zurücksandte – eine Arbeit, die den Komponisten neben dem Konzer-

tieren stark beanspruchte: „Ich spiele sehr viel und lese viel Korrektur (die neue Rhapsodie). Ich bin ziemlich erschöpft. Ich werde mich erst im Mai ausruhen können, wenn auch nur kurz.“, schrieb er am 8. Dezember 1934 an Nikolaj Medtner.4 Zusätzlich entstand schließlich an Heiligabend 1934 bei RCA Records eine Ersteinspielung der Rhapsodie in der Besetzung der Uraufführung. Ende des Jahres lag dann die Erstausgabe der Orchesterpartitur in Rachmaninows eigenem Pariser Verlag „Edition Tair“ und in den USA bei Carl Fischer (Copyright bei Charles Foley) vor. Wenige Monate später, im März 1935, erschien schließlich auch der Klavierauszug in denselben Verlagen.

Rachmaninow selbst führte die Rhapsodie auf Tourneen zwischen 1934 und seinem letzten Auftreten als Solist eines Konzertes am 11. Februar 1943 in Chicago nicht weniger als 37-mal auf, zahlenmäßig nur noch übertroffen von den wesentlich früher entstandenen Konzerten Nr. 2 (80-mal) und Nr. 3 (43-mal).5 Nach anfänglich recht verhaltenen Reaktionen auf das Werk wurde es sehr schnell äußerst beliebt – Michel Fokine choreographierte bereits 1939 eine Ballettfassung für das Londoner Royal Ballet – und fand auch unter Rachmaninows Musikerfreunden große Bewunderung. Walter Damrosch etwa, einer der bedeutendsten amerikanischen Dirigenten des 20. Jahrhunderts und künstlerischer Partner in zahlreichen gemeinsamen Konzerten, war zutiefst beeindruckt und schrieb Rachmaninow: „I do not go to many concerts these days, but when I saw the announcement of yours at which you not only play, but that also your First Symphony [recte First Concerto, Second Symphony, and Paganini Variations] would be performed, I of course came to hear it all. Needless to say your music gave me an evening of intense interest and great enjoyment. […] and as for the Paganini Variations, they made me long to become a pianist in order to be able to play them. Could you not take me on as a pupil? I am only seventy-seven and would like to make my debut as a pianist at eighty, and with those Variations!“6

Preface

Sergei V. Rachmaninoff (1873–1943) composed the Rapsodie sur un thème de Paganini op. 43 in the summer months of July and August 1934 at the villa “Senar”, his Swiss home on Lake Lucerne. It belongs to a group of late masterpieces written after the composer emigrated from Russia in 1917. After long years characterized principally by pianistic triumphs, these works were composed between 1931 and 1940 in France, Switzerland, and, following the outbreak of the Second World War, in the USA: the “Corelli Variations” op. 42 (1931), the “Paganini Rhapsody” op. 43 (1934), the Third Symphony op. 44 (1935/36) and the Symphonic Dances op. 45 (1940).

The most popular and most frequently performed work of this group by some distance is undoubtedly the Rhapsody, a cycle of variations for piano and orchestra on the famous theme from Niccolò Paganini’s 24th Caprice for solo violin. Numerous composers have fallen for its charms over the centuries, including Johannes Brahms, Franz Liszt, Eugène Ysaÿe and Witold Lutosławski, to name just the best-known. Also woven into the Rhapsody is the famous medieval hymn on the Last Judgement, the “Dies Irae”, a theme also used by Rachmaninoff in other works – the Third Symphony and the Symphonic Dances, the earlier symphonic poem The Isle of the Dead and the cantata The Bells

On 18 August 1934 Rachmaninoff put his signature to the autograph score of the just-completed “Paganini Rhapsody”, now preserved as part of his estate.1 He had probably begun working on it immediately after his arrival in Hertenstein at the villa “Senar” (an acronym of his and his wife’s first names Sergei and Natalia Rachmaninoff) on 1 July. The day after completing the work he wrote to his sister-in-law Sophia about the intensive period of composition: “it’s been long since I wrote you – but ever since the very day of my return from Como and Monte Carlo on July 1, I’ve kept myself at work, working literally from morn to night, as they say. This work is rather a large one, and only yesterday, late at night, I finished it. […] This piece is written for piano and orchestra, about 20–25 minutes in length. But it is no ‘concerto’!

It is called Symphonic Variations on a theme by Paganini”.2 The work’s final title had, however, not yet been chosen. A few weeks later, on 8 September, he mentioned a “Fantasia for piano and orchestra in the form of variations on a theme by Paganini”3 to his friend Vladimir Wilschau. For the first edition he finally chose a French title, Rapsodie sur un thème de Paganini

The work received its premiere in the following concert season 1934/1935 on 7 November 1934 in a concert at Baltimore’s Lyric Theatre, with Leopold Stokowski conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra, and Rachmaninoff at the piano. Rachmaninoff subsequently performed the Rhapsody several times as soloist in the USA and Europe. Preparing the work for print proceeded in parallel with the concert tour. Rachmaninoff produced the piano reduction, checked the sets of proofs, and compiled lists of corrections in which he recorded alterations which he sent back to the publisher – a task that demanded much of the composer alongside performing in concerts. On 8 December 1934 he wrote to Nikolaj Medtner: “I am playing a great deal and doing much

proofreading (the new Rhapsody). I am quite exhausted. I can look forward to a rest only in May, and then but a brief one”.4 In addition, a first recording of the Rhapsody with the original line-up was made on Christmas Eve 1934 for RCA Records. Then, at the end of the year, the first edition of the orchestral score was released by Rachmaninoff’s own Paris publishing house “Edition Tair”, and in the USA by Carl Fischer (copyright by Charles Foley). A few months later, in March 1935, the piano reduction was finally also released by those same publishers.

Rachmaninoff himself performed the Rhapsody no fewer than 37 times on concert tours between 1934 and his last appearance as a concert soloist on 11 February 1943 in Chicago, a figure only surpassed by the considerably earlier Second Concerto (80 times) and Third Concerto (43 times).5 After initially receiving rather reserved reactions, the work very quickly became extremely popular; Michel Fokine choreographed a ballet version for the London Royal Ballet as early as 1939, and it was also greatly admired by Rachmaninoff’s musician friends. For example, Walter Damrosch, one of America’s leading conductors in the 20th century, and Rachmaninoff’s artistic partner in many joint concerts, was deeply impressed, and wrote to him: “I do not go to many concerts these days, but when I saw the announcement of yours at which you not only play, but that also your First Symphony [recte First Concerto, Second Symphony, and Paganini Variations] would be performed, I of course came to hear it all.
