Vorwort

In seinem op. 112 fasst Beethoven die Gedichte Meeresstille und Glückliche Fahrt von Johann Wolfgang von Goethe zusammen. Beide Texte sind schon in der Erstveröffentlichung im Musen-Almanach für das Jahr 1796 als Paar nebeneinander gestellt; diese Anordnung behielt Goethe in den verschiedenen von ihm später herausgegebenen Werkausgaben bei. Beethoven beschäftigte sich, wie einzelne Skizzen zeigen, schon Ende 1814 mit den Texten. Die Hauptarbeit an dem Chor folgte im Sommer 1815; am 25. Dezember desselben Jahres dirigierte der Komponist die Uraufführung in einem Konzert zugunsten des Wiener Bürgerspitalfonds. Die Veröffentlichung verzögerte sich um einige Jahre, da der Verleger S. A. Steiner das ihm überlassene Manuskript zunächst liegen ließ. Erst 1822 brachte er op. 112 gleichzeitig als Partitur, in Einzelstimmen und als Klavierauszug heraus. Die Originalausgabe ist Goethe gewidmet; auf Veranlassung Beethovens wurde ihr in einer späteren Auflage als Motto ein Zitat aus Homers Odyssee beigefügt.

Hauptquelle der vorliegenden Edition ist eine von einem Kopisten beschriebene Partitur mit zahlreichen Nachträgen und Korrekturen

Beethovens. Die Originalausgabe und eine als Stichvorlage dienende Abschrift des Klavierauszugs wurden als Nebenquelle herangezogen. Der Klavierauszug stammt zwar nicht von Beethoven, wurde aber von ihm durchgesehen und verbessert. Für die Singstimmen dokumentiert er an einigen Stellen offenbar ältere Lesarten, die unabhängig von den überlieferten Partituren sind und somit auf das (verschollene) Autograph zurückgehen könnten. Sie sind als Fußnoten wiedergegeben.

Die Ausgabe gibt den Notentext der Beethoven-Gesamtausgabe wieder. Näheres zur Textgestaltung, zur Quellenlage sowie zur Entstehungsgeschichte findet sich im Vorwort und im Kritischen Bericht des entsprechenden Bandes. Den Editionsprinzipien der Gesamtausgabe folgend wird das Staccato vereinheitlicht als Strich dargestellt (was Beethovens Schreibgewohnheit entspricht); Ergänzungen des Herausgebers stehen in runden Klammern.

Preface

In his op. 112 Beethoven sets the two poems by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Meeresstille (“Calm Sea”) and Glückliche Fahrt (“Prosperous Voyage”). Both texts appeared side by side when they were first published in the Musen-Almanach für das Jahr 1796; Goethe retained this association in the various later editions of his works. Several sketches reveal that Beethoven had already begun to take an interest in the poems by the end of 1814. His main work on the chorus fell in the summer of 1815; on 25 December of the same year the composer conducted the première at a benefit concert for the Viennese Citizens’ Hospital Fund. The publication of op. 112 was delayed for several years as the publisher, S. A. Steiner, procrastinated over the manuscript placed at his disposal. He did not issue the work until 1822, when it appeared simultaneously in score, parts, and piano-vocal score. The original publication bore a dedication to Goethe; a later edition contained, at Beethoven’s request, a quotation from Homer’s Odyssey appended as a motto.

The principal source for our edition is a copyist’s manuscript in full score in which Beethoven entered a large number of additions and corrections. The original printed edition and a copy of the piano-vocal score that

serve as a master for the engraving were consulted as secondary sources. Although Beethoven did not prepare the piano-vocal score himself, he proofread and vetted it. In several passages of the vocal parts he apparently retained earlier readings which are independent of the surviving scores and possibly derive from the (lost) autograph. They are listed in the footnotes.

This edition presents the musical text from the complete edition of Beethoven’s works. Further information on the establishment of the text, the source evaluation and the genesis of the work can be found in the Preface and Critical Notes of the above-mentioned volume. In keeping with the editorial policy of the complete edition we have standardized the staccato marks by consistently using the stroke (which corresponds to Beethoven’s own notational custom); all editorial additions are enclosed in parentheses.

Dans son op. 112 Beethoven regroupe les poèmes de Johann Wolfgang von Goethe intitulés Meeresstille («calme marin») et Glückliche Fahrt («heureux voyage»). Ces deux textes sont déjà juxtaposés dans la première publication du Musen-Almanach für das Jahr 1796; Goethe a conservé cette réunion dans les différentes éditions de ses œuvres, éditées plus tard par ses soins. Comme le font apparaître diverses esquisses, Beethoven s’est occupé des textes dès la fin de 1814; le 25 décembre de la même année, le compositeur dirigeait la création de l’œuvre, lors d’un concert donné au bénéfice du fonds du Bürgerspital de Vienne. La publication s’est trouvée retardée de quelques années, l’éditeur S. A. Steiner ayant tout d’abord laissé de côté le manuscrit qui lui avait été remis. C’est en 1822 seulement qu’il publie l’op. 112 sous forme simultanément de partition, de parties séparées et de réduction pour piano. L’édition originale est dédiée à Goethe; une édition ultérieure se verra adjoindre comme devise, sur l’initiative du compositeur, une citation de l’Odyssée d’Homère.

C’est une partition écrite par un copiste qui constitue la source principale de la présente édition laquelle comporte nombre de rajouts et de

corrections de la main de Beethoven. L’édition originale ainsi qu’une copie de la réduction pour piano utilisée comme modèle de gravure ont été retenues comme sources secondaires. La réduction pour piano n’est certes pas de Beethoven même, mais c’est lui qui l’a revue et corrigée. Pour les parties chantées, la réduction pour piano fournit en divers endroits des variantes manifestement antérieures, indépendantes des partitions conservées et qui pourraient remonter à l’autographe (disparu). Elles sont mentionnées dans les notes en bas de page.

Cette édition reprend le texte musical de l’édition complète des œuvres de Beethoven. Vous obtiendrez de plus amples informations sur l’élaboration du texte, l’état des sources et l’histoire de la genèse de l’œuvre dans la préface et le compte-rendu critique du volume mentionné. Conformément aux principes de l’édition complète le Staccato est indiqué sous forme de tirets (ce qui correspond à la notation habituelle de Beethoven); les ajouts de l’éditeur sont notés entre parenthèses.
