JohannBaptistWanhal(Vanhal)wasoneofthemostprolificcomposersofthe18th andearly19th century.Hewasbornin NovéNechanice,BohemiaonMay12,1739.Successinhisearlymusicstudyearnedhimapositionasorganistattheageof 18inOpocno(1757)andlateraschoraldirectorinHnevcenes(1759–61).CountessShaffgotschbroughthimtoViennain 1761forstudywithDittersdorf.AsojournsponsoredbyBaronI.W.RieschenabledhimtospendtwoyearsinItaly (1769–71).OnreturningtoViennahesufferedamentaldepressionbutrecoveredafterconvalescenceinHungaryandCroatia.HediedinVienna,August20,1813.
Wanhal’scompositionaloutputwasenormous,includingoverahundredsymphonies,anequalnumberofstringquartets, churchmusicandnumerousotherinstrumentalworks,soloand ensemble.Amongtheseareaconcertoforbassoonandone fortwobassoons.WewishtothanktheMecklenburgStateLibraryforprovidingamicrofilmof thedoubleconcerto.The pianoreductionisprovidedbyRobertP.BlockandthecadenzainthefirstmovementbyRichardB.Herving.
