Johann Baptist Wanhal (Vanhal) was one of the most prolific composers of the 18th and early 19th century. He was born in Nové Nechanice, Bohemia on May 12, 1739. Success in his early music study earned him a position as organist at the age of 18 in Opocno (1757) and later as choral director in Hnevcenes (1759 – 61). Countess Shaffgotsch brought him to Vienna in 1761 for study with Dittersdorf. A sojourn sponsored by Baron I.W. Riesch enabled him to spend two years in Italy (1769 – 71). On returning to Vienna he suffered a mental depression but recovered after convalescence in Hungary and Croatia. He died in Vienna, August 20, 1813.

Wanhal’s compositional output was enormous, including over a hundred symphonies, an equal number of string quartets, church music and numerous other instrumental works, solo and ensemble. Among these are a concerto for bassoon and one for two bassoons. We wish to thank the Mecklenburg State Library for providing a microfilm of the double concerto. The piano reduction is provided by Robert P. Block and the cadenza in the first movement by Richard B. Herving.
