TRIO

für Flöte, Violoncello und Klavier A-dur

for Flute, Violoncello and Piano in A major op. 78

herausgegeben von | edited by Nikolaus Delius

Musica Rara 1135 Printed in Germany

The publication of this Trio is based on an edition in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Munich. The original title of the Parts reads: ADAGIO, VARIAZIONEN und RONDO, | über ein russisches Thema | für | Piano=Forte, Flöte und Violonzell | von | JOH: NEP: HUMMEL. | 78tes Werk. | […] | WIEN, | bei Tobias Haslinger. The original copy was carefully prepared and this new edition follows it closely. The Piano part has been turned into a score according to modern practice. A few additional interpretative suggestions by the Editor are marked: (). The notation for the Pedal : was retained. I have intentionally refrained from supplementing the octave-doublings which the instruments of Hummelʼs time were not capable of playing.

Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778–1837) was known during his lifetime as a Virtuoso Pianist and lmproviser. When a boy he spent two years in Mozartʼs house as his pupil and at the age of ten set out on his first concert tour with his father during which he enjoyed a great success in London amongst other cities. His style of composition is undoubtedly influenced partly by Mozart and partly by the vivacity and lightness of the Viennese school of piano playing as well as his own virtuosity. Riemann says of him: “a lack of passion and warmth of feeling is compensated for by garlands of passage work“. While I regard this judgement too strong in the light of comparison with Mozart it is nevertheless of interest to find Schumann maintaining that his Piano Sonata in F sharp minor would have been sufficient to immortalise this composer. Both works, the Piano Sonata as cited by Schumann, and this Trio originate from the year 1819. The editor is confident that it has been undeservedly forgotten and that its reappearance is a valuable addition to this somewhat limited repertoire.
