Baritone saxophone in Eb
G.c./superball – No time to change mallets, too short duration to make work the drawing effect… In case of troubles, please, invent any other funny low glissanding sound, contrasty to the others (with use of any other instrument). Bs/Timp.-ped. – The glissando down of timpani-pedal should modulate the pitch of bongos. Bird – Any bird-call, for example a water-nightingale kept during the first 33 measures in mouth.
Percussion (1 player) bird call cup chime xylophone 2 glissanding gongs (Peking opera) – middle size, any pitch; higher gong gliss. up, lower gong gliss. down Lions roar 1 kettle drum (high) 1 bongos (fixed over the kettle drum with its open end close to timpani-skin) 1 cymbal (to be laid on kettle drum during playing; no stand) bass drum (large) + superball on wire-stick Piano + slide (very little bottle or glass, 50ml) gloves without fingers (for glissandi) kazoo stone (flat, smooth, big more or less as piece of bread, it’s bottom slightly convex or somehow uneven)
Explanations General Measure 25 and onwards – still loud, however there will be natural differences in volume. The delicate sounds such as piano-slide, bird-call and cup-chime should not be played too loud and may become even softer after m. 30 to underline the grotesque contrast with loud sounds. Saxophone
Piano Glissandi – It is recommended to use cotton fingerless gloves and do the glissandi with flesh of palms to avoid injury when playing loud and fast. Crazy wild glissandi are desired, each glissando should start with cluster. Clusters – The longer symbol means with forearm, the short one means with palm. pizz./”Grrr” – The lowest string should be plucked hardly and than touched with finger-nail to rattle. Slide – In the higher medium register of piano, the slide should attack strings of two adjacent tones and draw along their surface under certain pressure, to produce a delicate glissando up (no use of keyboard). With pedal. Kazoo – Sing through kazoo a short glissando down (between major second and minor third). Stone – should be laid on strings in advance, to middle or higher register, with its convex bottom down. To play, it should be touched lightly so that it swings itself quickly, making the strings ring tremulously. Usually works better with pedal.
Duration
harsh dirty sound exception: a″ (mm. 25–34) quite nice sound, like cats miaow (ossia an octave higher) vibr./gliss. – Instead of vibrato may be used any other funny trembling (such as bisbigliando or so). “boat horn” – The lowest possible pitch should hoot like a huge steamboat horn.
