Building upon one another, the works promote the continuous expansion of instrumental proficiency as well as the extension of the competencies in ensemble playing on the one hand; on the other, there are didactic commentaries on every piece, which throw a bridge to materials used in general school-music teaching. The score edition contains the conductor's score. On the enclosed CD-ROM one will find both a complete score with alternative and additional parts, as well as part material in PDF format ready for printing.

Helmke Jan Keden (*1974) ist nach Lehramtsstudium, Referendariat, Promotion und Tätigkeit als Studienrat i. K. am Dietrich-BonhoefferGymnasium in Hilden sowie als Lehrbeauftragter an der Universität Wuppertal seit 2011 Professor für Musikpädagogik an der Universität zu Köln.

Helmke Jan Keden (b. 1974). After studying teacher training and obtaining his doctoral degree, he taught at the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Gymnasium in Hilden as well as at the University of Wuppertal. Since 2011 he has been professor of music pedagogy at the University of Cologne.

Philipp Matthias Kaufmann (*1970), Musikstudium mit Hauptfach Cello in Düsseldorf, anschließend Cello-Lehrer und Orchesterleiter an Schulen und Musikschulen; aktuell tätig als freischaffender Musiker, Arrangeur und Komponist, u. a. in Education-Projekten von Orchestern in Köln (WDR), Düsseldorf (Tonhalle) und Berlin (Philharmoniker).

Philipp Matthias Kaufmann (b. 1970) studied music and majored in cello in Düsseldorf. He later became a cello teacher and orchestral conductor at general schools and music schools. For quite some time now, he has been active as freelance musician, arranger and composer, e.g. in educational projects with orchestras in Cologne (WDR), Düsseldorf (Tonhalle) and Berlin (Berlin Philharmonic).

Einführung Seit geraumer Zeit erleben wir an vielen allgemeinbildenden Schulen einen Gründungsboom von musikalischen Förderkonzepten, die vielfach unter dem Begriff Musikklassen zusammengefasst werden.1 Die Ursachen für diese Entwicklung sind mannigfaltiger Art. Für die einen bieten diese neuen Unterrichtsformen vor dem Hintergrund empirischer sowie lernpsychologischer Erkenntnisse eine sinnvolle Alternative zum konventionellen Musikunterricht.2 Andere sehen u. a. neue Chancen darin, sich mit der Einrichtung solcher Spezialklassen an Schulen im Rahmen der zunehmenden Profilbildung von anderen Bildungseinrichtungen abzusetzen.3 Auch wenn die durch die öffentliche Diskussion bedingte Aufwertung des Faches Musik und seiner Praxis an allgemeinbildenden Schulen grundsätzlich zu begrüßen ist, werden dabei jedoch manchmal mögliche Konsequenzen außer Acht gelassen, welche die Einrichtung von Musikklassen mit sich bringen kann. Diese liegen u. a. in der Tendenz begründet, dass gerade in den unteren Jahrgangsstufen der herkömmliche Musikunterricht bisweilen durch die neuen Unterrichtsformen nahezu in Gänze ersetzt wird.4 Ist im positiven Sinne festzustellen, dass die Schülerinnen und Schüler5 in vielen Modellen intensiven Unterricht im Instrumental- und Ensemblespiel erfahren, bleibt doch für jeden einzelnen Fall zu hinterfragen, inwieweit dies auf Kosten anderer obligatorisch vorgesehener Unterrichtsinhalte geschieht. Denn schulischer Musikunterricht soll nicht nur instrumentale Musizierpraxis beinhalten, sondern den Schülern auch eine Vielzahl von weitergehenden ästhetischen und reflektierenden Erfahrungen ermöglichen.

Lösungskonzepte sind jedoch bis auf wenige Ausnahmen eher Mangelware.7 An dieser Stelle möchten wir mit dem vorliegenden Band ansetzen: Wir plädieren für einen Musikunterricht an der allgemeinbildenden Schule, in dem das gemeinsame Musizieren im Instrumentalensemble und der herkömmliche Musikunterricht einander sinnvoll ergänzen.

Didaktischer Anknüpfungspunkt unserer Überlegungen bildet die Konzeption des Aufbauenden Musikunterrichts, welche von Werner Jank u. a. in Zusammenarbeit mit Johannes Bähr, Stefan Gies und Ortwin Nimczik entwickelt wurde.8 Verkürzt formuliert, rückt das Modell mit dem Verweis auf lernpsychologische Ansätze (insbesondere auf Arbeiten Edwin E. Gordons und Wilfried Gruhns) zum einen die Bedeutung musikalischer Praxis für das kindgerechte musikalische Lernen stark in den Vordergrund, was sich u. a. in den beiden Praxisfeldern Musikalisches Gestalten und Aufbau musikalischer Fähigkeiten widerspiegelt. Auf der anderen Seite bietet es mit dem dritten Praxisfeld, der Kulturerschließung, eine Verbindungsmöglichkeit zur reflektierenden Auseinandersetzung. So können also auch Aspekte des instrumentalen Ensemblespiels mit weiteren wichtigen Inhalten des konventionellen Musikunterrichtes an allgemeinbildenden Schulen sinnvoll verbunden werden.9 Mit diesem Band wird eine Reihe von aufeinander aufbauenden Arrangements vorgelegt, die nicht nur den kontinuierlichen Ausbau instrumentaler Fertigkeiten und die Steigerung von Kompetenzen im Ensemblespiel, wie z. B. Intonationsfähigkeit und individuelles Ausdrucksvermögen, zum Ziel haben. Vielmehr wird zu jedem Stück exemplarisch eine Reihe von Bezugspunkten zu Inhalten des allgemeinbildenden Musikunterrichts genannt, sodass die enge Vernetzung der verschiedenen Unterrichtsarten sichtbar wird. Neben grundlegenden Begriffen der Elementarlehre wie Rhythmus, Metrum, Takt, Dynamik, Intervalllehre und Harmonik werden also auch Bezüge zu weiterführenden 7

4 Unterrichtsaspekten hergestellt: Hierzu gehört etwa die Arbeit mit Themenmaterial, Programmmusik, Interkulturalität sowie Musik und Bewegung.

Ohne die Intentionen und Leistungen der breitenspezifischen Ansätze wie der Streicher- und Bläserklassen in Abrede stellen zu wollen, möchten wir mit diesem Band Material vorlegen, das sich an der Instrumentation eines sinfonischen Klassenorchesters orientiert. Dies halten wir unter der Bedingung für möglich, dass die musizierenden Schüler, wie vielerorts praktiziert, neben dem konventionellen Musikunterricht und dem Orchesterspiel auch zusätzlichen Instrumentalunterricht erhalten, also nicht ausschließlich im (Gesamt-)Ensemble ihr Instrument erlernen.

Unsere bisherigen Erfahrungen, die wir gemeinsam mit den sogenannten Talentförderklassen Musik am DietrichBonhoeffer-Gymnasium in Hilden in vielen Jahren sammeln konnten,10 bestätigen, dass alle Schüler, gleich welches sinfonische Instrument sie spielen, von Anfang an im Klassenorchester erfolgreich gemeinsam musizieren können.

Um dies zu ermöglichen, galt es bei der Arbeit an den Kompositionen und Arrangements, die individuellen Leistungsniveaus, besonders die instrumentenspezifischen Lernarten und Grifftechniken, zu beachten, die sich selbstredend bezüglich Tonvorrat, Tonarten etc. deutlich voneinander unterscheiden. Dies betraf auch die Option, mit den Arrangements nicht nur innerhalb der Schule, sondern auch institutionsübergreifend, z. B. mit einer Musikschule im Rahmen von Kooperationsmodellen, arbeiten zu können.

Die Werke dieser Ausgabe sind nach Leistungsniveau geordnet. Dabei haben wir uns in etwa an den Fähigkeiten junger Instrumentalisten im Alter von 8 bis 12 Jahren in Anfänger-Ensembles der Musikschulen bzw. an Schülern der 3. bis 6. Jahrgangsstufe an allgemeinbildenden Schulen orientiert.

Die Kommentare ab Seite 73 zeigen einerseits instrumentaldidaktische Perspektiven auf, sie sollen andererseits aber auch Denkanstöße darstellen, wie die Verbindung des jeweiligen Werks mit ausgesuchten Inhalten des konventionellen Musikunterrichts bewerkstelligt werden kann. Alle darüber hinausgehenden didaktischen Überlegungen für die individuelle Unterrichtssituation seien ausdrücklich in die Verantwortung der Pädagogen gelegt!

Anmerkungen zur Ausgabe und zum Umgang mit dem Stimmenmaterial Folgende Besetzung stellt den optimalen Fall dar und sollte aus Gründen der klanglichen Ausgewogenheit angestrebt werden: Flöte I und II, Oboe, Klarinette I und II (B), Altsaxophon (Es), Trompete I und II (B), Pauken, Schlagzeug/ Drumset, Violine I (mind. 4), Violine II (mind. 4), Viola (mind. 2), Violoncello (mind. 2), Kontrabass (mind. 1).

Wie homogen der Gesamtklang eines Ensembles ist, hängt unmittelbar von den Möglichkeiten der einzelnen Instrumente und dem Leistungsstand ihrer Spieler ab: Kleinere Streichinstrumente junger Spieler, wie etwa eine halbe Geige oder ein Viertelcello, verfügen selten über eine große Klangfülle; Blasinstrumente lassen sich Instrument

im Anfängerstadium wegen ihrer speziellen Ansprache nur bedingt leise spielen. Diese klanglichen oder dynamischen Missverhältnisse können aber unserer Meinung nach mit Geduld und Übung ausgeglichen werden. Auch die unterschiedlichen Vorkenntnisse in Musiktheorie gilt es zu beachten.

Häufig müssen in der Praxis fehlende Instrumente ersetzt werden oder es stehen weitere Instrumente zur Verfügung, die eingebunden werden können (z. B. Fagott, Horn und Posaune). Instrumente, zu denen sich – neben den entsprechenden vollständigen Partituren – Alternativ- oder Zusatzstimmen auf der CD befinden, sind im Instrumentenvorsatz der Partitur kursiv gedruckt. Die folgende Tabelle gibt einen Überblick über den in klanglicher Hinsicht sinnvollen Einsatz dieses Materials.

Bei Instrumenten, die erfahrungsgemäß zahlreich vertreten sind, ist die Doppelbesetzung oder die Verteilung auf ähnliche Partien als sinnvolle Alternative zu überlegen.

So können Flöten auch die Oboenstimme mitspielen, ebenso ist aufgrund der gleichartigen Transposition eine Unterstützung bzw. ein Ersatz der Trompeten durch die Klarinetten denkbar. Grundsätzlich sollte aber darauf geachtet werden, dass sich die orchestrale Besetzung nicht zu weit vom Ideal entfernt.

Beim Einsatz der Zusatzstimmen ist Folgendes zu beachten: • Alle Zusatzstimmen sind den jeweiligen Alternativinstrumenten angeglichen. Es gibt Ossia-Varianten im Kleinstich und Empfehlungen (z. B. „Posaune tacet“).

In der Probenarbeit wird sich herausstellen, wie damit umzugehen ist.

• Die Alternativstimmen stellen nur beim Altsaxophon einen gleichwertigen Ersatz dar. Bei Viola und Violoncello können zusätzliche Bläser deren Stimme lediglich unterstützen, nicht aber wirklich ersetzen.

• Die klangliche/dynamische Ausgewogenheit des Ensembles sollte immer gewährleistet bleiben. Eine Posaune allein kann eingebunden werden, bei zweien wird es schon schwierig.

• Die ersetzenden oder unterstützenden Instrumente sollten im Orchester an der Stelle des „Originalinstruments“ oder in dessen Nähe sitzen. Das erleichtert das Zusammenspiel.

Spezielle Notationen • In einigen Bläserstimmen tauchen an wenigen Stellen zwei Töne gleichzeitig auf. Sind beide Notenköpfe in normaler Größe notiert, kann frei gewählt werden; hier entscheidet der Klang. Die kleiner gesetzten Noten sind Ossia-Versionen für den Fall, dass die Hauptnote aus technischen Gründen noch nicht spielbar ist.

• Doppelgriffe bei den Streichern sind auch tatsächlich als Akkorde auszuführen. Die Griffkombinationen sind so gewählt worden, dass die spieltechnischen Anforderungen hierbei gut bewältigt werden können. Strichbezeichnungen sind sparsam gesetzt, auf Fingersätze wurde gänzlich verzichtet.

Introduction For quite some time now we have been experiencing a boom in the establishment of musical funding concepts which often are summarized under the term music classes.1 There are various causes for this development. For some, these new ways of teaching offer a reasonable alternative to conventional music education in the light of empirical findings as well as educational psychology.2 Others take it as an opportunity to set themselves apart from other educational institutions by establishing such special classes at schools, in line with their increasing development of distinctive profiles.3 Prompted by the public debate, the subject of music and its practice at general education schools have been revaluated. As welcome as this fact may be in general, it is possible to neglect certain consequences that result from the setting up of music classes. These may be due to the fact that especially in the early grades there is a trend to completely replace conventional music lessons by those new methods of teaching.4 On the positive side, it should be said that students experience intensive training in instrumental and ensemble playing through many methods. However, for each individual case the question remains as to whether this is at the expense of other scheduled compulsory teaching subjects. For not only should music education at school comprise instrumental playing practice, it should also enable the students to have an opportunity to acquire a wide range of advanced aesthetic and reflective experiences.

This problem has been widely recognized.5 Apart from a few exceptions, school policy standards and music didactical solution concepts are rather rare.6 And that is where we would like to focus our endeavors with this

edition: We plead for music education at general education schools, in which instrumental ensemble playing and conventional music education complement each other.

The concept of the Sequential Music Education, developed by Werner Jank et al. in collaboration with Johannes Bähr, Stefan Gies and Ortwin Nimczik, provided the didactic link to our thoughts.7 Briefly worded, this model focuses on the importance of musical practice for child-oriented musical learning which on the one hand is reflected a.o. on the practice fields of musical creation and the development of musical skills with reference to the psychological approach of learning (especially to works by Edwin E. Gordon and Wilfried Gruhn). On the other hand, the third practice field, the cultural exploitation, provides a link to reflective examination.

Here, aspects of instrumental ensemble playing can be connected sensibly with further important contents of conventional music education at general educational schools.8 This edition offers a number of sequential arrangements aiming at continuously developing instrumental skills and the improvement of competences in ensemble playing, as for example the intonation ability and individual expression. In addition, each piece is provided with a number of reference points to contents of the general musical education, thus making the close interconnection visible. Besides basic terms of elementary music teaching such as rhythm, meter, beat, dynamics, intervals and harmony, links to advanced aspects of teaching are also imparted: These include, for example, working with thematic material, program music, interculturality, as well as music and motion.

Without diminishing the intentions and accomplishments of the mass-specific approaches like string or wind classes, with this edition we would like to present material which is oriented towards the instrumentation of a symphonic class orchestra. We believe it is possible, provided that the music-making students receive instrumental lessons in addition to conventional music education and playing in the orchestra, i.e. they should 7 8

The experience gained throughout many years of working with the so-called talent promotion classes at the Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Gymnasium in Hilden9 has shown that all students can successfully play together in the class orchestra from the beginning, no matter which symphonic instrument they play.

Therefore, while working on the compositions and arrangements it was essential to pay particular attention to individual performance levels, instrument-specific learning methods and fingering techniques which of course differ distinctly as to their supply of notes, keys, etc. The same applies to the option to be able to work in other institutions beyond school, like for example a music school on the basis of co-operation models.

The pieces in this edition are sorted according to performance levels. Here, we tried to focus on the skills of young instrumentalists aged 8 to 12 in beginners’ ensembles of music schools and on students of grades 3 to 6 at general education schools.

The comments starting on page 77 show instrumentaldidactic perspectives, while providing food for thought on how to establish a connection of each work to selected contents of conventional music education. All further didactic thoughts on individual educational situations should be entrusted to the responsible hands of the teachers!

Notes on the Edition and on the Handling of the Parts For reasons of tonal balance, the following instrumentation represents the ideal case and should be striven for: Flute I and II, Oboe, Clarinet I and II (Bj), Alto Saxophone (Ej), Trumpet I and II (Bj), Timpani, Percussion/ Drumset, Violin I (at least 4), Violin II (at least 4), Viola (at least 2), Violoncello (at least 2), Double Bass (at least 1).

The homogeneity of the ensemble’s overall sound depends directly on the possibilities of each instrument and its player’s performance level. Smaller stringed instruments of younger players, such as a half-sized violin Instrument

or a quarter-sized violoncello, rarely achieve great sonority, and wind instruments are difficult to be played softly in the beginners’ level. In our opinion, however, these tonal or dynamic imbalances can be met with patience and practice. The different levels of knowledge of music theory must also be kept in mind.

In practice, missing instruments often have to be replaced and different instruments can also be used when available (e.g. bassoon, horn and trombone). Instruments with alternative or additional parts which can be found on the CD (in addition to the complete scores), are printed in italics in the score. The chart below provides an overview of the intelligent use of this material in regard of the sound aspect.

For instruments that are empirically high in number, thought should be given to a sensible alternative such as the allocation of two players to a part or the distribution among similar parts. Thus, flutes could play the oboe part as well, likewise the support or replacement of the trumpets by clarinets is conceivable because of the similar transposition. Basically, however, the orchestral setting should not be too far from the ideal.

As to the use of additional parts, the following should be borne in mind: • All additional parts are adapted to the respective alternative instruments. There are Ossia variants in small print and recommendations (e.g. “trombone tacet”).

It will turn out during rehearsals how to deal with them.

• Only in the case of the alto saxophone, the alternative parts are an equivalent replacement. For viola and violoncello, additional wind instruments can merely support their part but cannot really replace them.

• The tonal / dynamic balance of the ensemble should always be guaranteed. One sole trombone can be easily integrated, but two trombones will be difficult.

• The replacement or supporting instruments should be placed at the position of the “original instrument” or close by, thus facilitating the ensemble playing.

Special Notation • In some wind parts two notes appear simultaneously at few points. If both note heads are notated in a normal size, the note can be chosen freely; the sound is crucial here. The smaller notes are Ossia versions, in case the main note is not yet playable for technical reasons.

• Double stops for string players are really to be played as chords. The fingering combinations have been chosen in such a manner that their technical demands can be well managed. Bowing instructions are sparsely set, fingerings have been omitted altogether.

Die Werke fördern zum einen aufeinander aufbauend den kontinuierlichen Ausbau instrumentaler Fertigkeiten sowie die Steigerung der Kompetenzen im Ensemblespiel. Zum anderen finden sich zu jedem Stück didaktische Kommentare, welche die Brücke zu Inhalten des allgemeinbildenden Musikunterrichts schlagen. Die Notenausgabe enthält die Dirigierpartitur. Auf der beigefügten CD-ROM befinden sich sowohl eine Gesamtpartitur mit Alternativ- und Zusatzstimmen als auch das Stimmenmaterial im PDF-Format zum Ausdrucken.

contains seven richly varied compositions and arrangements for beginners‘ symphonic ensembles at general schools and music schools. Building upon one another, the works promote the continuous expansion of instrumental proficiency as well as the extension of the competencies in ensemble playing on the one hand; on the other, there are didactic commentaries on every piece, which throw a bridge to materials used in general school-music teaching. The score edition contains the conductor's score. On the enclosed CD-ROM one will find both a complete score with alternative and additional parts, as well as part material in PDF format ready for printing.

Helmke Jan Keden (*1974) ist nach Lehramtsstudium, Referendariat, Promotion und Tätigkeit als Studienrat i. K. am Dietrich-BonhoefferGymnasium in Hilden sowie als Lehrbeauftragter an der Universität Wuppertal seit 2011 Professor für Musikpädagogik an der Universität zu Köln.

Helmke Jan Keden (b. 1974). After studying teacher training and obtaining his doctoral degree, he taught at the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Gymnasium in Hilden as well as at the University of Wuppertal. Since 2011 he has been professor of music pedagogy at the University of Cologne.

Philipp Matthias Kaufmann (*1970), Musikstudium mit Hauptfach Cello in Düsseldorf, anschließend Cello-Lehrer und Orchesterleiter an Schulen und Musikschulen; aktuell tätig als freischaffender Musiker, Arrangeur und Komponist, u. a. in Education-Projekten von Orchestern in Köln (WDR), Düsseldorf (Tonhalle) und Berlin (Philharmoniker).

Philipp Matthias Kaufmann (b. 1970) studied music and majored in cello in Düsseldorf. He later became a cello teacher and orchestral conductor at general schools and music schools. For quite some time now, he has been active as freelance musician, arranger and composer, e.g. in educational projects with orchestras in Cologne (WDR), Düsseldorf (Tonhalle) and Berlin (Berlin Philharmonic).
