In addition to using it for cello ensemble, string quartet, string trio or string orchestra, the two books can even be combined, giving groups with an uncommon scoring the possibility of ensemble playing. Alternative parts are available on the CD-ROM. Detailed explanations on the pieces and on the used playing techniques together with PDF, audio and video files make this material a method for string instruments that covers a broad spectrum of popular music.

Zur Einführung Im Jahr 2009 veröffentlichte das Jazzstreichquartett String Thing mit Groovy Strings. Rhythmus & Groove im Streicherunterricht (Breitkopf & Härtel BV 387) eine ideale Grundlage für das Spielen und Unterrichten Populärer Musik auf Streichinstrumenten.

In seiner Konzeption beschränkt sich dieses Lehrwerk jedoch bewusst auf Trios, die auf allen Streichinstrumenten in der ersten Lage spielbar und in beliebig gemischten Besetzungen gut darstellbar sind.

Mit dem vorliegenden Heft The Groove Cello ConneXion und The Groove String ConneXion (KM 2300) liegt nun je eine Ausgabe für Celloensemble und für Streicher in (auf den ersten Blick meist) „klassischer“ Besetzung vor. Diese beiden Ausgaben enthalten Kompositionen und Arrangements, die im Rahmen meiner langjährigen Arbeit für Ensembles wie Cello-Combo, Cello-Bigband, StreicherBigband und für Workshops entstanden sind. Die Idee dabei ist, mit reinen Streicherensembles ohne Rhythmusgruppe (Schlagzeug, Gitarre oder Klavier) neben den „Tönen“ auch den Groove und den Swing zu erzeugen, den die jeweilige Musik braucht. Neben stiltypischer Artikulation und Phrasierung werden perkussive Elemente und Spieltechniken einbezogen, die zum Beispiel von Bass und Gitarre inspiriert sind und teilweise aus der Folk-Tradition der Streicher stammen.

Dieser Band enthält Erläuterungen zu jedem Stück. Ergänzt wird er durch eine CD-ROM, die nicht nur Spielpartituren (Playing Scores) und Aufnahmen der Stücke samt Beispielsoli enthält, sondern auch Videos zur Ausführung einzelner Passagen und der relevanten Spieltechniken (s. Index, S. 54). Letztere werden ausführlich in der Datei „Zu den Spieltechniken“ erklärt (�  PDF 1). Ihre Bezeichnungen folgen dem angloamerikanischen Sprachgebrauch. Weitere durch Sonderschrift gekennzeichnete Fachbegriffe werden im Glossar erläutert (�  PDF 3).

Die Kombination der zwei Ausgaben ermöglicht das Zusammenspiel auch in ungewöhnlich besetzten Gruppen.

Bei Workshops beispielsweise ist häufig eine Konstellation anzutreffen, in der es etwa so viele Geigen wie Celli gibt – dafür aber wenige oder keine Bratschen und Kontrabässe.

Durch Zusatzstimmen (Additional Parts), die im PDFFormat auf der CD der Streicherausgabe (KM 2300) bereitgestellt sind und ausgedruckt werden können, erhöht sich die Flexibilität für die Praxis: hier gibt es Kontrabassstimmen, die gerne gesehene Violine 3 statt der Bratsche und zusätzliche Stimmen für den Fall bratschenlastiger Ensembles.

Um die Kompatibilität der zwei Ausgaben einschließlich der Additional Parts in zwei Sprachen zu gewährleisten, habe ich mich für die Stimmenbezeichnungen „Part 1“, „Part 2“ etc. entschieden. Auf diese Weise kann man ohne Missverständnisse auch in sehr bunt gemischten Besetzungen proben und spielen.

Zu einigen Stücken gibt es Grafiken, die jeweils einen exemplarischen Formablauf darstellen, dem auch die Audioaufnahmen auf der CD weitgehend entsprechen. Die Abläufe können und sollen natürlich an die jeweilige Ensemble- bzw. Aufführungssituation angepasst werden. Das kann sowohl die Anzahl von Wiederholungen betreffen als auch die Entscheidung für freie Gruppenimprovisationen als Intro oder Ending eines Stücks.1 Bei den meisten Stücken ist als stiltypischer Bestandteil der Form ein Soloteil eingeplant, der zu Improvisationen eines oder mehrerer Solisten einlädt. Da die Erfahrung mit der Motivation zur Improvisation bei der Zielgruppe dieses Buches sehr unterschiedlich ist, gibt es in der vorliegenden Ausgabe Starthilfen in Form von notierten Soli (s. die PDFDateien auf der CD), die als Inspirationsquelle, Etüde und „Steinbruch“ dienen sollen. Wenn einzelne Passagen eines Beispielsolos die momentanen spieltechnischen Möglichkeiten des Solisten am Instrument übersteigen, kann es etwa helfen, zur Vereinfachung nach sinnvollen Oktavierungen zu suchen. Solche Probleme können aber auch der erste Impuls dazu sein, etwas Eigenes zu spielen und, wenn genügend eigene Ideen vorhanden sind, die Beispiele ganz zu ignorieren. Ein üblicher Weg, das stilgerechte Improvisieren zu lernen, ist, sich passende Aufnahmen oft genug anzuhören, bis man neben den Tönen auch Details wie Klangfarben, Phrasierungen etc. verinnerlicht hat. Die Einspielungen auf der CD geben hierzu die Gelegenheit. In den Soli sind auch Spieltechniken zu hören, die in den Noten nicht ausdrücklich notiert, aber im Heft erklärt sind.

Swingstücke werden wie üblich in „geraden“ Achtelnoten notiert und mit der Anweisung „Swing“ versehen. Da es je nach stilistischem Zusammenhang unterschiedliches Timing im Swing gibt, kann man sich anhand der Aufnahmen orientieren, was ich mir zu den einzelnen Stücken vorgestellt habe.

Die Metronomangaben orientieren sich an den Aufnahmen. Die Stücke funktionieren aber oft auch in einem weiter gefassten Tempobereich.

Die hinzugefügten Akkordsymbole ermöglichen eine Erweiterung der Besetzung durch Instrumente wie Gitarre und Klavier oder eine ganze Rhythmusgruppe. Darüber hinaus geben sie zusätzliche Informationen für Musiker, die bereits mit ihnen vertraut sind. Daher verzichte ich auf eine Erläuterung im Rahmen dieser Ausgabe. Wer die Symbole jedoch zum Anlass nimmt, sich mit diesem Thema zu beschäftigen, findet sehr leicht Orientierung in Büchern, im Internet und bei anderen Musikern.

5 Das gelegentlich vorkommende „N. C.“ bedeutet „No Chord“ – die Rhythmusgruppe schweigt bzw. spielt unisono mit dem Ensemble. Töne für den Kontrabass sind im Rahmen der Arrangements meist durch eine Bassstimme festgelegt. Aber vor allem in den Soloteilen gibt es Passagen, in denen ein freierer Umgang mit dem Material möglich ist. Falls auch ein Schlagzeuger / Percussionist eingesetzt werden soll, kann dieser sich die für das Mitspielen notwendigen Informationen über die Form und rhythmische Struktur eines Stückes anhand der Partitur erschließen.

Ich freue mich, wenn die Musik und die Hilfestellungen der Groove Cello ConneXion / Groove String ConneXion auch zu Anregungen zum eigenen Basteln werden, denn so ist das Material einmal entstanden.

Über die Zusatzstimmen der Streicherausgabe Die CD-ROM zu The Groove String ConneXion (KM 2300) enthält Zusatzstimmen (Additional Parts) zu einzelnen Instrumenten der klassischen Streichquartett- bzw. -orchesterbesetzung. Für die meisten Stücke gibt es die Parts 1 und 2 für Bratsche und den Part 3 für Violine sowie eine Kontrabassstimme. Bei den zwei dreistimmigen Stücken Pluck Party und Bratfisch gibt es zusätzlich eine komplette Bratschenpartitur. In Kombination mit The Groove Cello ConneXion erhält man sehr variables Material für zahlenmäßig ungewöhnliche Besetzungen. Bei der Entscheidung über die Stimmenverteilung sind aber sicher nicht alle Kombinationen gleich gut. Bewährt sind die Konstellationen, bei denen wegen Bratschenmangels eine Violine 3 eingesetzt wird. Gibt es aber zu wenige Geigen, kann die

Stimme auch durch ein Violoncello 3 unterstützt werden.

Wenn viele Celli im Spiel sind, hat es sich bewährt, im Part 1 Violinen mit einer kleineren Anzahl Celli zu mischen.

Bei einigen Stücken ist es auch eine gute Lösung, die Violinen für Part 1 zu reservieren, und Part 2 mit Celli zu besetzen.

Vorsicht ist dabei geboten, zu viele Parts in Oktavabständen mit Geigen, Bratschen, Celli und dazu noch mit Kontrabass zu besetzen. Das Klangbild könnte „unaufgeräumt“ wirken. In Einzelfällen lassen sich aber sicher originelle und abwechslungsreiche Instrumentierungen finden, da die Spieler durch die Form der Spielpartitur (Playing Score) die Stimme im Laufe eines Stücks wechseln können.

Vorübung: Rhythmussprache Die im oben erwähnten Buch Groovy Strings enthaltenen grundsätzlichen Überlegungen und Vorübungen zu Rhythmus und Groove bieten eine sehr gute Grundlage und Ergänzung zur Arbeit mit dem vorliegenden Material.

Beim Einstudieren einzelner Stimmen verwende ich zum Erlernen des Rhythmus die dort näher erläuterte Rhythmussprache, die spezielle Silben verwendet und sich auf gängige Modelle aus der Bigband-Praxis bezieht. Dabei werden die Hauptschläge (Beats 1 2 3 4) als „du“ und die Nachschläge (Offbeats 1 und 2 und 3 und 4 und ) als „ba“, zwei Achtelnoten als On- und Offbeat also „duba“ gesprochen. Es entsteht eine klare Systematik, die das Erlernen vor allem synkopierter Rhythmen erleichtert, da durch die Silbenzuweisung bei jedem Ton klar ist, ob er auf oder neben dem Beat erklingt. Von der für ein Stück gewünschten Artikulation bis hin zum angestrebten Charakter einer Passage oder eines einzelnen Motivs lässt sich alles mit dieser Rhythmussprache sehr einfach vokal darstellen. Das Erlernen des Rhythmus mit der Artikulation auf diese Weise erleichtert die spätere Umsetzung einer gemeinsamen musikalischen Vorstellung am Instrument.

Begonnen wird das Rhythmuslernen mit einer Grundübung, in der auf der Stelle gegangen wird: Im 4/4-Takt: Rechts – „Tip“ (L) – Links – „Tip“ (R); Ausfallschritt rechts, linke Fußspitze tippend heranholen, dann Ausfallschritt links, rechte Fußspitze tippend heranholen. So lässt sich der Beat körperlich mit der Sprache synchronisieren. Dazu werden die Silben gesprochen.

Kurze Impulse wie etwa Staccati werden „dutt“ bzw. „batt“ gesprochen. Auch ein „ba“, auf das eine Pause folgt, wird in vielen Stilen Populärer Musik kurz als „batt“ artikuliert.

Bei einer Aktiven Pause (�  PDF 1, S. 1) füge ich gerne ein akzentuiertes leises „m“ oder „hm“ ein, wenn diese auf einem Beat liegt und ihr ein „ba“ folgt. Für Triolen empfehle ich „dugeba“ und für vereinzelte Gruppen von vier Sechzehnteln „dugebage“. Bei vorwiegend sechzehntelorientierten Stücken bietet es sich an, die „Duba“-Ebene von den Achteln auf die Sechzehntel zu verschieben. Hier die Rhythmussilben noch einmal im Überblick:

Introduction In 2009 the jazz string quartet String Thing published Groovy Strings. Rhythmus & Groove im Streicherunterricht (Breitkopf & Härtel BV 387) which provides a perfect basis for playing and teaching popular music for string instruments.

This textbook, however, is deliberately confined to pieces for trios; all of them are playable in the first position and well adapted for any desired combination of string instruments.

Now, with The Groove Cello ConneXion for Cello Ensemble and The Groove String ConneXion (KM 2300) for Strings, two editions with (at first sight mostly) “classical” instrumentation, are presented. Both editions comprise compositions and arrangements that evolved within the scope of my longtime work for ensembles like Cello Combo, Cello Big Band, String Big Band and for workshops. The idea behind this is to enable pure string ensembles without a rhythm section (percussion, guitar or piano) to create not only “tones” but also the groove and the swing called for by the respective music. Besides style-typical articulation and phrasing, percussive elements and playing techniques are used, which are inspired for instance by bass and guitar, and partly derive from the folk tradition of string players.

This book contains explanations for each piece. It is complemented by a CD-ROM, containing not only playing scores and recordings of the pieces, including exemplary solos, but also videos on how to perform individual passages and their relevant playing techniques (see Index, p. 54).

The latter are described in detail in the PDF “On the playing techniques” (�  PDF 2). Their terms follow the AngloAmerican linguistic usage. Further technical terms marked by special font are explained in the glossary (�  PDF 4).

The combination of both editions gives groups with an uncommon scoring the possibility of ensemble playing. In workshops, for instance, you frequently find constellations with about the same number of violins and cellos, but just a few violas and double basses or none at all. Additional parts, available and printable as PDF files on the CD of the string edition (KM 2300), increase the flexibility for practical use: here you find double-bass parts, the favored violin 3 instead of the viola and additional parts for violaheavy ensembles.

In order to ensure the compatibility of both editions including the additional parts in two languages, I have decided to use “Part 1”, “Part 2”, etc. instead of instrument names.

This allows for rehearsing and playing with a wide variety of scorings.

Graphics are provided for some pieces, each representing an exemplary formal structure which is largely met by the audio tracks on the CD as well. The sequences may and should absolutely be adapted to the ensemble on hand and the performance situation. This is applicable to the number of repetitions as well as for deciding on free group improvisations as an intro or as an ending of a piece.1

For most of the pieces a solo part as style typical element of the form is included, inviting one or several soloists to improvise. As experiences with the target group of this book as to motivation to improvise vary considerably, the present edition offers initial aids in form of notated solos (see the PDF files on the CD), serving as sources of inspiration, etude and “quarry”. If individual passages of an exemplary solo exceed the proficiency of the soloist at his instrument, finding appropriate octave transpositions, for example, could simplify the matter. Such problems, however, could also be a player’s first impulse to play his own version, and once plenty of original ideas have been compiled, the examples can be ignored altogether. One common way to learn how to improvise in a stylistically appropriate style is to listen repeatedly to matching recordings until not only the tones but also details like tone color, phrasing, etc. have been internalized. Corresponding opportunities are provided by the recordings on the CD. In the solos, playing techniques are heard which are not specifically notated in the scores, they are explained in the book.

As is customary, swing pieces are notated in “straight” eighth notes and marked with the instruction “Swing”. For reasons of different timings depending on the stylistic context in swing, the recordings reflect what I had in mind for the individual pieces.

Metronome markings are based on the recordings. However, the pieces also work in a broader tempo range.

The added chord symbols allow for additional instruments like guitar, piano or a complete rhythm group. Moreover, they provide additional information for musicians already familiar with them. That’s why I do without an explanation in this edition. However, taking the symbols as an opportunity to dwell on this subject, you can easily find orientation in books, the internet and from other musicians.

The occasional “N. C.” means “No Chord” – the rhythm group is silent or plays in unison with the ensemble. Tones for the double bass within the arrangement are mostly defined by a bass part. However, especially in the solo parts there are passages in which an unconstrained way of dealing with the material is possible. If a drummer or percussionist is used, he can acquire the necessary information on form and rhythmic structure of a piece with the aid of the score.

On the Additional Parts of the String Edition The CD-ROM on The Groove String ConneXion (KM 2300) contains additional parts for each instrument of the classical string quartet and string orchestra. For most pieces, Parts 1 and 2 for the viola, Part 3 for the violin and a double-bass part are provided. For the two three-part pieces Pluck Party and Bratfisch there is an additional complete viola score. In combination with The Groove Cello ConneXion highly variable material for numerically unusual instrumentations is provided. When deciding on the distribution of parts, certainly not all combinations are suited equally well. Tried and tested are constellations where for lack of violas a violin 3 is used. However, if there

are too few violins, the part can be supported by a violoncello 3. In case there are many cellos playing, it is advisable to mix violins with a smaller number of cellos in Part 1.

For some pieces it works out well to assign the violins to Part 1 and cellos to Part 2.

Care must be taken not to use too many parts in octave intervals with violins, violas, cellos and an additional double bass. The sound pattern might appear “untidy”. In some cases, however, inventive and diverse scorings can be found, since the players, due to the form of the playing score, may change parts during the piece.

Preliminary Exercise: Rhythmic Language The fundamental considerations and preparatory exercises on rhythm and groove contained in the aforementioned book Groovy Strings establish a sound base and complement the work with the present edition.

When rehearsing individual parts, I use the rhythmic language which utilizes special syllables and relates to common modes of the Big Band practice, described in detail in this book.

Here, the main beats (1 2 3 4) are vocalized as “doo” and the off-beats 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and ) as “bah”, two eighth notes as on- and off-beat, “doo-bah”. A lucid system is developed which particularly eases syncopated rhythms.

Through allocating syllables it is clear for each tone if it sounds as a on- or off-beat. Through this rhythmic language, everything can be easily depicted, from the desired articulation of a piece through to the character aimed at in a section or motif. Mastering the rhythm with this kind of articulation facilitates the subsequent implementation of a common musical conception at the instrument.

Learning the rhythm starts with a basic exercise, walking on the spot: In four-four time: Right – “Tip” (L) – Left – “Tip” (R), side lunge right, bring left foot in tapping toe, then lunge to the left side, bring right foot in tapping toe. Thus, the beat can be synchronized physically with the language. At the same time the syllables are vocalized.

Short impulses like e.g. staccati are pronounced “doott”.

Likewise, a “bah”, followed by a rest, is pronounced “butt” in many popular music styles. In an active rest (�  PDF 2, p. 1), I like to insert an accentuated soft “m” or “hm”, provided that this is on a beat and followed by a “bah”. For triplets I recommend “doo-ge-bah”, for sporadic groups of four sixteenths notes “doo-ge-bah-ge”. For pieces consisting mainly of sixteenths notes, it is recommendable to shift the “doo-bah”-level from the eighths to the sixteenth notes.
