In the summer of 2021, the Coronavirus pandemic seemed to wane after months of lockdowns and, with caution, people began to attend classical music concerts again after such a long break. It was then that a pianist organised a curious tour of Italy to perform open-air recitals, with a piano loaded onto a small mobile stage that was towed to a different city every day.
The audience would listen to the concerts seated on lawns, or in large courtyards, in squares, in farmhouses, or sometimes even in the cloisters of ancient palaces, wherever the piano was placed. And, to start the concert and warm the hearts of the listeners, Nicola Campogrande was commissioned to compose three short preludes, easy to play and easy to listen to. So each evening the pianist would choose one following the mood of the moment, and the audience – intrigued by pieces they had never heard before – would immediately find themselves drawn into the impromptu concert.
Now the Preludi da viaggio (Travel Preludes), brought together in this book, are available to everyone. They can be played on their own or
all at once – at the beginning of a concert or in the midst of other pieces, in a giant auditorium, in a small chamber music hall or perhaps in an evening of Hausmusik – their mood, oscillating between cheerfulness, amiability and irony, allows each performer to express his or her emotions, condensing them into a few minutes of enchanting music.
