Preface

Die Herausforderung, ansprechende, überzeugende Stücke für nur eine Hand am Klavier zu schreiben, macht geradezu süchtig!

Kaum war mein One Hand Piano (EB 8646) im Jahr 2013 erschienen, begann ich, weitere Stücke für die linke oder rechte Hand allein zu schreiben: Wie wäre es mit einem Tango für eine Hand? Einem besonders romantischen Walzer? Einer lyrischen Elegie? Düsteren, atmosphärischen Stücken im Filmmusik-Stil? Es hat mir viel Freude bereitet, herauszufinden, was eine Hand alleine leisten kann.

Ich habe auch in Archiven nach Klavierstücken gestöbert, die in den Epochen des Spätbarocks, der Klassik und der Romantik für eine Hand allein geschrieben wurden. Dabei stieß ich auf ein paar sehr interessante Beispiele!

Was diese Sammlung zu etwas ganz Besonderem macht, sind die Kompositionen von einigen großartigen zeitgenössischen Komponisten! Garreth Brooke, Alison Mathews und Clemens Christian Poetzsch haben jeweils ein Stück speziell für dieses Buch geschrieben, und Nikolas Sideris hat mir freundlicherweise erlaubt, sein wunderschönes One mit aufzunehmen. Ein riesiges Dankeschön an Alison, Clemens, Garreth und Nikolas!

The challenge of writing enjoyable, satisfying pieces for only one hand on the piano is positively addictive! My One Hand Piano (EB 8646) was hardly published in 2013, when I started writing more pieces for the left or right hand alone: could I come up with a Tango for one hand? a really romantic Waltz? a lyrical Elegy? dark, atmospheric film-music-style pieces? I had a great time exploring what one hand is capable of!

I also started digging in archives for keyboard pieces written in the late baroque, classical, and romantic eras for one hand alone, finding a few very interesting examples!

What makes this collection really special is having pieces written by some wonderful contemporary composers! Garreth Brooke, Alison Mathews, and Clemens Christian Poetzsch each wrote a piece specially for this book, and Nikolas Sideris kindly allowed me to include his beautiful One. A huge thanks to Alison, Clemens, Garreth and Nikolas!

Notes on this Edition

Sämtliche Fingersätze sind als Vorschläge zu verstehen. Die Ziffern über dem System gelten für die rechte Hand, die unteren, kursiv gesetzten Zahlen für die linke. Die Mehrzahl der Stücke ist von beiden Händen spielbar (R/L); wo das nicht der Fall ist, steht nur R oder L.

The fingerings are merely my suggestions. The upper numerals represent fingerings for the right hand, the lower, italicised numerals are for the left hand. Most pieces are playable by either hand (R/L); when this is not the case, only R or L indicates for which hand the piece was written.

Sätzen aus dem 18. Jahrhundert habe ich darüber hinaus Vorschläge zum Vortrag, zur Dynamik und zur Phrasierung hinzugefügt.

For 18th century settings, I have also provided suggestions on performance, dynamics and phrasing.

Wie häufig in der Klavierliteratur, kommen öfters längere Noten vor, die nicht in voller Länge zu halten sind. Mit der Unterstützung des Haltepedals und ein wenig Phantasie („Die Kunst des Klavierspiels ist die Kunst der Illusion“, Daniel Barenboim) werden diese Noten so „gehört“, als würden sie über ihre gesamte Länge gehalten.

As is common in keyboard music, there is a number of long notes, which are actually impossible to hold for their full written value.

With the help of the sustaining pedal and a little imagination (“The art of piano playing is the art of illusion”. Daniel Barenboim) they will be “heard” as though they were held their full length.

Barbara Arens geb. 1960, ist passionierte Klavierpädagogin. Im Alter von 13 Jahren begann sie ihre Ausbildung am Mozarteum in Salzburg. Es folgte eine Konzertkarriere vorwiegend als Cembalistin und Organistin. Nun hat sie viel Freude daran, für ihre Klavierschüler zu komponieren. Nach Stationen in Beirut, Dallas, San Francisco, Singapur, Salzburg, London und München lebt sie jetzt in der Nähe von Würzburg.

born in 1960, is a passionately dedicated piano teacher. She began her studies at the Mozarteum in Salzburg at the age of 13.

After a concert career performing primarily as harpsichordist and organist, she now greatly enjoys composing for her piano pupils.

She presently lives near Würzburg, Germany, after living in Beirut, Dallas, San Francisco, Singapore, Salzburg, London, and Munich.
