Vorwort Als Joachim Raffs Laufbahn nach dem durchschlagenden Erfolg der Symphonien Nr. 3 „Im Walde“ und Nr. 5 „Lenore“ in den frühen 1870er-Jahren ihren Zenit erreicht hatte, konnte er zum ersten Mal von den Verlagshonoraren seiner Werke leben und sich einem wahren Schaffensrausch hingeben.1 Raffs Orchester- und Kammermusik wurde nicht nur in Deutschland, sondern auch in zahlreichen anderen Ländern häufig aufgeführt, wie die damaligen Musikzeitschriften belegen – viele der bekanntesten Virtuosen der Zeit spielten seine Werke.

Neben etlichen groß besetzten Werken verfasste Raff in dieser Phase auch seine Sonate für Klavier und Violoncello op. 183, deren Entstehungskontext völlig im Dunkeln liegt: In einem Brief vom 23. März 1873 bot er dem Verlag Bote & Bock einige „kleinere Werke“ zur Inverlagnahme an, die er druckfertig habe: den Todtentanz op. 181, Zwei Romanzen für Horn op. 182 (deren Stimme auch auf dem Cello ausgeführt werden kann) und als op. 183 eine „Sonate für Pianoforte und Violoncell (4 Sätze).“2 Für alle drei Werke zusammen verlangte er 250 Thlr (ohne Eigentum für Frankreich, Belgien und Italien). Der Verleger reagierte allerdings nicht so, wie es sich Raff vorgestellt hatte. Am 6. April ließ Raff denselben trocken wissen: „Hiermit bitte ich Sie, mein letztes Verlagsoffert als nicht geschehen zu betrachten, da ich über meine bezüglichen Werke anderweit verfüge.“3 Nach der Rückkehr aus seinem Sommerurlaub in Oberbayern schrieb Raff am 8. Juli dem Verlag: „Die betreffenden Werke sind bei Siegel in Leipzig im Stich.“4 Raffs Korrespondenz mit Richard Linnemann, der seit 1870 Verlagsleiter von C. F. W. Siegel war, ist nur lückenhaft überliefert. Am 12. August drängte der Verleger jedenfalls auf Zusendung des Manuskripts des Klavierkonzerts op. 185 sowie der Revision der Romanzen und der Cellosonate, die er Raff am 10. Juli bzw. 5. August geschickt habe.5 Raff erledigte die Aufgabe bald darauf, sodass Linnemann die Sonate unter Datierung „Anfang October 1873“ in den Signalen für die musikalische Welt zusammen mit seinen anderen Raff-Neuerwerbungen (op. 180–185) anzeigen konnte.6 Der oft wenig geschäftstüchtig agierende Raff setzte sich offenbar nicht aktiv für die Aufführung des Werks ein.7 Während die meisten seiner früheren Kammermusikwerke namhaften Interpreten gewidmet sind, die sich um seine Musik verdient gemacht haben, unterblieb dieser Schritt bei der Cellosonate – sie entbehrte folglich eines tatkräftigen Zugpferds. Als Raffs langjährige Freunde Hans von Bülow und Bernhard Cossmann, der als „[Joseph] Joachim des Cellos“8 eine wichtige Rolle in der Verbreitung von Raffs Kammermusik gespielt hatte,9 im Herbst 1873 gemeinsam eine Tournee durch mehrere Städte unternahmen, stand die Cellosonate nicht auf dem Programm, dafür das dem berühmten Cellisten gewidmete Duo op. 59 sowie die beiden Fantasiestücke op. 86, allesamt zu diesem Zeitpunkt gut zwanzig Jahre alt.10 Auch die mutmaßliche Uraufführung der Cellosonate in Berlin scheint nicht von Raff in die Wege geleitet worden zu sein.11 Möglicherweise als Reaktion auf die umjubelte öffentliche Uraufführung der Symphonie Nr. 5 op. 177 „Lenore“ in Berlin unter Benjamin Bilse am 29. Oktober 1873 setzte der „Ständige Ausschuss des Deutschen Musikertages“ die Cellosonate auf das Programm seines zweiten Novitätenkonzerts in der Singakademie. Diese Konzertreihe wurde im Frühling desselben Jahres

vom Deutschen Musikertag12 unter der Leitung des Pianisten, Komponisten und Musikpädagogen Julius Alsleben angestoßen, der seit 1865 auch als Vorsitzender des Berliner Tonkünstlervereins wirkte. Für die folgende Wintersaison wurden sechs „durch Statuten normierte Novitätenkonzerte“ in Berlin in die Wege geleitet.13 In der Neuen Zeitschrift für Musik bedauerte Otto Leßmann die geringen Besucherzahlen des Eröffnungskonzerts, das am 3. November stattfand, und die „theilweise feindselige Stimmung der Tagespresse“ trotz des in seinen Augen „recht erfreulichen“ künstlerischen Erfolgs.14 Im zweiten Konzert, das besser besucht war als das erste,15 stand u. a. Raffs Cellosonate auf dem Programm, gespielt von Julius Alsleben, der auch in den Versammlungen des Berliner Tonkünstlervereins regelmäßig als Interpret auftrat. Als Cellist konnte Adolf Rohne gewonnen werden, der in diesem Jahr dem bekannten Quartett von Heinrich de Ahna beigetreten war.16 Die von Leßmann angekündigte Fortsetzung seiner Berliner Korrespondenz in der Neuen Zeitschrift für Musik erschien nicht mehr – sein Nachfolger „O.B.“ besprach das Konzert nicht, nur die „Lenore“-Aufführung unter Bilse.17 Dafür schrieb der Rezensent „G.E.“ (wohl Gustav Engel) über das Konzert für die Vossische Zeitung: Das zweite Novitäten-Concert, das am Montag in der Singakademie stattfand, begann mit einer Sonate (D-dur, op. 183.) für Klavier und Cello von Joachim Raff. Bei der großen Anzahl von Compositionen, welche Raff, der geistreiche Verfasser der Waldund Lenoren-Symphonie, in die Welt sendet, kann es nicht fehlen, daß auch Unbedeutendes in die Oeffentlichkeit kommt. Dazu rechnen wir die erwähnte Sonate, die zwar einen fließenden und gewandten Styl beleumdet, in den Gedanken aber kaum einen Anhalt zu besonderer Theilnahme gewährt. Die Herren Alsleben und Rohne brachten das Werk mit musikalischer Sicherheit zum Vortrag.18

Ein anonymer Rezensent in den Signalen für die musikalische Welt urteilte Raffs Cellosonate pauschal ab, wohl mit der Hörerfahrung der „Lenore“ im Hintergrund: Raff’s Cello-Sonate, mit welcher es [das Konzert, Anm. des Autors] eröffnet wurde, zeigt, daß der Componist auch das langweilige Genre noch recht sorgfältig pflegt. Wo er sich der starken Reizmittel der „Neudeutschen“ enthält, wie in dieser Sonate, da wird er zopfig in der schlimmsten Weise.19

Die Sonate entsprach offenbar nicht dem Geschmack der Berliner Rezensenten, die sich nach Raffs großen Orchesterwerken wohl andere Vorstellungen von seiner Kammermusik gemacht hatten. Obwohl die anderen Werke des Abends bei den Rezensenten eine günstigere Beurteilung fanden als Raffs Sonate, musste die Konzertreihe nach dem dritten Konzert aus finanziellen Gründen abgebrochen werden.20 Auch in Dresden, wo Raff, anders als in Berlin, als Ehrenmitglied des Dresdner Tonkünstlervereins21 eine systematische und durchaus erfolgreiche Strategie zur Verbreitung seiner Werke verfolgte, kam die Cellosonate zum Erklingen. Dieses Konzert kann wohl ebenfalls auf die Aufführung einer Raff-Symphonie zurückgeführt werden: Am 7. März 1873 hatte Julius Rietz die Symphonie Nr. 3 „Im Walde“ „mit großem u. allgemeinem Beifalle“ dirigiert.22 Im Rahmen der bereits erwähnten Versamm-

III lung des Deutschen Musikertags in Leipzig im April 1873 kam das Oktett op. 176, das Raff an den Dresdner Konzertmeister Johann Lauterbach herangetragen hatte, im Gewandhaus durch Musiker der Dresdner Hofkapelle zur öffentlichen Erstaufführung.23 Während der erste Cellist, Friedrich Grützmacher, Raff nach einer weiteren Aufführung des Oktetts in Dresden erfolgreich um die Widmung eines Cellokonzerts ersuchte,24 führte der zweite, Carl Hüllweck jun., am 19. Januar 1874 aus Anlass des 7. Übungsabends des Tonkünstlervereins (eines sogenannten „Familienabends“) Raffs Cellosonate im Saal des Hotels Stadt Petersburg mit dem Pianisten Emil Höpner auf.25 Hüllweck trat 1876 auch als Cellist der Uraufführung von Raffs Klavierquartett op. 202 Nr. 1 in Erscheinung.

Am 31. Januar 1874 berichtete der Pariser Verleger Jacques Maho, dass er in einem Hofmeister’schen Monatsbericht von der Herausgabe der Cellosonate gelesen habe – entgegen Raffs Versprechen, ihn vor dem Erscheinen eines Kammermusikwerks davon zu benachrichtigen.26 Da sich Raff das französische Eigentum vorbehalten hatte, unterbreitete er dem Verleger am 16. Oktober ein Angebot für die Suite für Violine und Orchester op. 180 und die Cellosonate op. 183, das dieser drei Tage später annahm.27 Offenbar war Raff nicht am Korrekturprozess beteiligt – die Korrespondenz gibt jedenfalls keinen Hinweis darauf.

Es scheint nicht unmöglich, dass Bülow, der am 17. November 1874 der „Freundesgattin“ Doris Raff aus London meldete, er habe dieses Werk ihres „blasirt“ gewordenen Gatten mit dem „famose[n] junge[n] franz. Violoncellist[en] Jules Lasserre“28 geprobt, die Maho-Ausgabe vorlag: „Vorigen Sonntag haben wir die D dur Sonate probirt und Früheres – das erste Fantasiestück spielt er geradezu bezaubernd – ganz Raff’sch. Im Detail sind die Franzosen gerade so aimabel, wie die Deutschen en gros respektabel.“29 Zu einer Aufführung der Sonate scheint es nicht gekommen zu sein. Allem Anschein nach haben auch weder Cossmann noch Grützmacher noch David Popper, an den Raff später sein zweites Cellokonzert WoO 44 herantrug, die Sonate gespielt. Im Gegensatz zu zahlreichen anderen Kammermusikwerken schaffte es die Cellosonate nicht aus den „Laboratorien“ der Tonkünstlervereine hinaus in die Repertoires der Spitzeninterpreten.

Preface When Joachim Raff’s career was at its zenith in the early 1870s after the breakthrough success of his Symphonies nos. 3, “Im Walde,” and 5, “Lenore,” he was finally able to live on the publisher’s fees for his works and devote himself to a creative frenzy.1 His orchestral and chamber music was performed by many of the most famous virtuosos of the time not only in Germany but also in numerous other countries, as documented by contemporary music journals.

Besides a number of large-scale works during this period, Raff also composed his Sonata for Piano and Violoncello op. 183, whose genesis context lies completely in the dark. In a letter dated 23 March 1873, he offered the Bote & Bock publishing house for publication some “smaller works” that he had ready to go to press, including the Todtentanz op. 181, Two Romances for Horn op. 182 (its horn part can also be performed on the cello), and as op. 183, a “Sonata for Piano and Cello (4 movements).”2 For the three works altogether he requested 250 thalers (to exclude property rights for France, Belgium, and Italy). Yet, the publisher did not respond as expected. On 6 April Raff drily let him know: “Herewith, I would like to ask you to ignore my last publishing offer, since I have otherwise disposed of the works concerned.”3 After returning from his summer vacation in Upper Bavaria, Raff wrote the publishing house on 8 July: “The works in question are being engraved by Siegel in Leipzig.”4 Raff’s correspondence with Richard Linnemann, C. F. W. Siegel’s publishing-house director since 1870, is only fragmentarily extant. In any case, the publisher urged on 12 August the dispatch of the manuscript for the Piano Concerto op. 185, together with the revised proofs for the romances and the cello sonata that he had sent Raff on 10 July and 5 August, respectively.5 The composer finished the assignment soon thereafter, so that Linnemann was able to advertise the sonata in the Signale für die musikalische Welt, under the date “Beginning of October 1873,” together with his other new Raff acquisitions (opp. 180– 185).6 The often less-enterprising Raff apparently did not actively promote the work’s performance.7 Whereas most of his earlier chamber music works are dedicated to well-known performers who rendered outstanding service to his music, this step was omitted with the cello sonata – it was consequently lacking an energetic crowd-puller. When Raff’s long-time friends Hans von Bülow and Bernhard Cossmann, who as the “[Joseph] Joachim of the cello” 8 had played an important role in the dissemination of the composer’s chamber music,9 undertook a joint tour of several cities in the fall of 1873, the cello sonata was not on the program; listed instead was the Duo op. 59, dedicated to the famous cellist, and the two Fantasiestücke op. 86, all of which were a good twenty years old at this point in time.10 Even the cello sonata’s ostensible premiere in Berlin does not seem to have been initiated by Raff.11 Possibly as a response to the acclaimed public premiere of his “Lenore” Symphony no. 5 op. 177 in Berlin under Benjamin Bilse on 29 October 1873, the “Ständige Ausschuss des Deutschen Musikertages [Standing Committee of the German Musicians’ Day]” programmed the cello sonata at its second concert of new music in the Singakademie. This concert series was initiated in the spring of that year by the German Musicians’ Day 12 under the aegis of the

pianist, composer and music pedagogue Julius Alsleben, who had also been chairman of the Berlin Tonkünstlerverein [Composer’s Association] since 1865. For the coming winter season, six “concerts of new music called for by statute” got underway in Berlin.13 Otto Leßmann regretted in the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik the low attendance at the opening concert, taking place on 3 November, and the “partly hostile disposition of the daily press” despite what he saw as a “quite gratifying” artistic success.14 The second concert, better attended than the first,15 included, among other things on the program, Raff’s cello sonata, played

by Julius Alsleben, who also regularly performed as interpreter at the meetings of the Berlin Tonkünstlerverein; the cellist was Adolf Rohne, who had joined Heinrich de Ahna’s well-known quartet that year.16 The announced continuation of Leßmann’s Berlin correspondence in the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik no longer appeared – his successor “O. B.” did not review the concert, only the “Lenore” performance under Bilse.17 With respect to the sonata, the reviewer “G.E.” (probably Gustav Engel) covered the concert for the Vossische Zeitung: The second New Music Concert, taking place on Monday in the Singakadamie, began with a sonata (D major op. 183) for piano and cello by Joachim Raff. Given the large number of compositions that Raff, the ingenious composer of the Wald and Lenore Symphonies, is sending forth into the world, also what is not so significant cannot fail to come to the public’s attention. Among these we count the sonata mentioned, which, although reputable in a flowing and skillful style, hardly gives any indication of especially involving ideas. The gentlemen Alsleben and Rohne performed the work with musical assurance.18

An anonymous reviewer in the Signale für die musikalische Welt passed a blanket judgment on Raff’s cello sonata, probably within the context of the experience of listening to “Lenore:” Raff’s cello sonata, with which it [the concert, author’s note] opened, shows that the composer still very carefully cultivates even the stodgy genre. Wherever, as in this sonata, he abstains from the strong stimuli of the “New Germans,” he becomes antiquated in the worst possible way.19

Apparently, the sonata was not to the taste of the reviewers in Berlin, who, after listening to Raff’s great orchestra works, must have had a different idea of his chamber music. Although they judged the evening’s other works more favorably than Raff’s sonata, the concert series had to be cancelled after the third concert for financial reasons.20 The cello sonata was also heard in Dresden, where – in contrast to Berlin – Raff, as an honorary member of the Dresden Tonkünstlerverein,21 pursued a systematic and definitely successful strategy to promote his works. This concert can probably also be traced back to the performance of a Raff symphony: On 7 March 1873 Julius Rietz conducted the “Im Walde” Symphony no. 3, “to great and general applause.”22 As part of the aforementioned meeting of the German Musicians’ Day in Leipzig in April 1873, Raff’s Octet op. 176, which he had dedicated to the Dresden concertmaster Johann Lauterbach, was given a first public performance in the Gewandhaus by musicians from the Dresden court orchestra.23 While the first cellist

V Friedrich Grützmacher successfully requested of Raff the dedication of a cello concerto after another octet performance in Dresden,24 the second cellist, Carl Hüllweck, Jr., together with the pianist Emil Höpner, performed Raff’s cello sonata on 19 January 1874 in the hall of the Hotel Stadt Petersburg at the 7th practice evening (a so-called “family evening”) of the Tonkünstlerverein.25 Hüllweck also appeared in 1876 as the cellist of the premiere of Raff’s Piano Quartet op. 202 no. 1.

On 31 January 1874 the Paris publisher Jacques Maho reported that he had read about the publication of the cello sonata in one of Hofmeister’s monthly report – contrary to Raff’s promise to notify him before the publication of a chamber music work.26 Since Raff had reserved the French property rights, he submitted an offer to Maho on 16 October for the Suite for Violin and Orchestra op. 180 and the Cello Sonata op. 183, which the publisher accepted three days later.27 Raff probably was not involved in the correction process – the correspondence, at any rate, gives no indication of this.

It does not seem impossible that Bülow, who announced from London to his “friend’s wife” Doris Raff on 17 November 1874, that he had rehearsed this work of her “presumptuous” husband with the “famous young French cellist Jules Lasserre,”28 used the Maho edition: “Last Sunday we rehearsed the D major sonata and earlier things – he plays the first fantasy piece in an almost enchanting way – all Raffian. The French are just as aimable in details as the Germans are en gros respectable.”29 The sonata does not seem to have been performed; to all appearances, it was not played by either Cossmann, or Grützmacher, or David Popper, for whom Raff later wrote his second Cello Concerto WoO 44. Unlike numerous other chamber music works, the cello sonata did not make it out of the “laboratories” of the Tonkünstlervereine into the repertoires of the top performers.
