Vorwort

Meine „lecture“ der Winterreise sucht nicht nach einer neuen expressiven Deutung, sondern macht systematisch von den Freiheiten Gebrauch, welche alle Interpreten sich normalerweise auf intuitive Weise zubilligen: Dehnung bzw. Raffung des Tempos, Transposition in andere Tonarten, Herausarbeiten charakteristischer farblicher Nuancen. Dazu kommen die Möglichkeiten des „Lesens“ von Musik: innerhalb des Textes zu springen, Zeilen mehrfach zu wiederholen, die Kontinuität zu unterbrechen, verschiedene Lesarten der gleichen Stelle zu vergleichen …1

Seit der Uraufführung am 21. September 1993 in der Alten Oper Frankfurt hat Hans Zenders „komponierte Interpretation“ Schuberts „Winterreise“ einen Siegeszug durch die Konzertsäle der Welt angetreten. Andere davor und danach erfolgte weitere Auseinandersetzungen Zenders mit klassischen Vorlagen – Dialog mit Haydn (1982), SchubertChöre (1986), Claude Debussy: Fünf Préludes (1991), Schumann-Phantasie (1997) – tragen nicht diesen Untertitel und legen zwischen Bearbeitung und Neukomposition jeweils andere Lösungen der Annäherung vor. So scheint es, als habe sich in Schuberts „Winterreise“ ein Anfang und gleichzeitig ein Modellfall der schöpferischen Weiterentwicklung ereignet, auf den danach (2010/11) nur Zenders 33 Veränderungen über 33 Veränderungen. Eine komponierte Interpretation über Beethovens Diabelli-Variationen gefolgt sind. Auch dass Zender genau eben jenem Werk den umfangreicheren Text Notizen zu meiner komponierten Interpretation von Schuberts „Winterreise“ gewidmet hat, der in seinem Schriftenband nicht in die anderen, durchweg kürzeren Werkeinführungen aufgenommen wurde, sondern in das eher schmale, aber wesentliche Kapitel „Komposition und Interpretation“, zeigt die außergewöhnliche Bedeutung dieser Partitur.

Schon bald nach vielbeachteten Konzertaufführungen erfuhr das Werk durch das Tanztheater – am namhaftesten dürfte 2001 die Choreographie John Neumeiers für das Hamburg Ballett gewesen sein –, wesentlich später auch durch das Musiktheater eine neue, nicht von vornherein angedachte Rezeption, deren unterschiedlichen Ansätzen der Komponist zu Anfang durchaus skeptisch, dann jedoch, sofern die Präsentation des Werks vollständig und ohne Einschübe gedacht war, durchweg aufgeschlossen und wohlwollend gegenüberstand. Letztlich hatte er selbst ja in seinem erwähnten Essay genau diese erweiterten Ansätze argumentativ indirekt unterstützt: „Die Musikwerke haben, wie auch die Theaterstücke, die Chance sich durch große Interpretationen zu verjüngen. Diese sagen dann nicht nur etwas über den Interpreten aus, sondern sie bringen auch neue Aspekte des Werkes zu Bewusstsein.“2 Unter diesen

szenischen Realisierungen bedeutete die choreographische Interpretation Christian Spucks für das Ballett Zürich einen weiteren Höhepunkt, die nach der Premiere am 13. Oktober 2018 mit der Auszeichnung durch den Prix Benois de la Danse auch eine besondere Würdigung erfuhr.

Dass im Rahmen der szenischen Einstudierungen und der allgemeinen Bühnenpraxis am ehesten die Frage nach einem Klavierauszug zu Schuberts „Winterreise“ gestellt wurde, nimmt nicht wunder. Die vorliegende Ausgabe geht folgerichtig auch auf eine szenische Einstudierung zurück und zwar auf die erwähnte Zürcher Produktion.

Wer Zenders weit gefächertes, reichhaltiges Auseinanderfalten im Konzertsaal oder auch im Theater erlebt hat, wird sich leicht vorstellen können, dass das Zurückführen auf den klassischen Klaviersatz nur unter großen Einschränkungen überhaupt möglich ist. Die Qualität des hier vorliegenden Klavierauszugs liegt in diesem besonderen Fall im Verzicht auf manche Erweiterung, seien es zusätzliche motivische Einwürfe oder eine weitere Instrumentalfarbe.

Dennoch entfernt sich mancher Verlauf konsequenterweise weit von der vertrauten Vorlage Schuberts. Gerade diesen größeren und kleineren Abweichungen (Tonartenwahl, Tempi, Kadenzen) gilt absolute Aufmerksamkeit.

Etliche perkussive Passagen erfordern darüber hinaus die Fantasie der Darstellung am Klavier, und im Fall der polymetrischen Nebensonnen (Nr. 23) wäre für eine annähernd adäquate Darstellung sogar eine dritte Klavierhand notwendig. Insofern muss unmissverständlich klar sein, dass der Klavierauszug ausschließlich für die Einstudierung des Sängers und/oder einer Ballettkompanie hilfreich ist; Aufführungen der „komponierten Interpretation“ Zenders mit Klavierbegleitung würden der Intention des Werks diametral entgegenstehen.

Ohnehin evoziert die vorliegende Ausgabe durch die reichhaltige Angabe von Instrumentalkürzeln die Klangvorstellung des Pianisten. Dabei sind vielfach auch die originalen dynamischen Angaben der Partitur übernommen, um eine Vorstellung von der Intensität oder Zerbrechlichkeit des jeweiligen Instrumentalklangs zu vermitteln. Der erfahrene Korrepetitor wird für seine Begleitung Rückschlüsse auf die Umsetzung am Klavier ziehen. Meist differenzieren die Instrumentalkürzel (und die entsprechende Dynamik) zwischen dem oberen und unteren Klaviersystem. Wenn die Kürzel jedoch nur zum oberen System gegeben werden, gilt dieser Hinweis auch für den gesamten Klaviersatz. Die allgemein gültige Dynamik ist dann auch zwischen den Systemen platziert.

Der Klavierauszug folgt selbstverständlich getreu der Partiturnotation der Stimme, auch in der Phrasierung, und er übernimmt auch die wenigen Ossia-Stellen. Im Gegensatz zur Partitur wird jedoch durchweg die klassische Tonarten­

Dies erfolgt nicht etwa als nostalgische „Annäherung an Schubert“, sondern vielmehr aus der praktischen Überlegung heraus, den Notensatz so übersichtlich wie möglich zu halten. Dazu trägt auch die Verwendung der klassischen Halsung bei, bei der die Notenhälse auf der dritten Linie nach unten gerichtet sind.

Zudem wurden bei der Ausarbeitung einige kleine Irrtümer, die sich bis heute in den Partiturdrucken von Schuberts „Winterreise“ versteckt halten, stillschweigend korrigiert.

Der Verlag dankt dem Dirigenten und Komponisten Matthias Hermann für den Hinweis auf die Existenz eines derart kompetenten Klavierauszugs, Christophe Barwinek für die Erarbeitung und die kritische Überwachung der vorliegenden Edition bis zur Drucklegung und letztlich vor allem Hans Zender für seine grandiose Gratwanderung und für die Erlaubnis, einen Klavierauszug vorlegen zu dürfen,

Preface My “lecture” of the Winterreise does not demand a new expressive interpretation, but instead systematically exercises the freedom which all interpreters allow themselves intuitively, such as: instrumental dilation i.e. acceleration of the pace, transposition into other keys and elaboration of characteristic color timbres. In addition, there are further ways of “reading”; the music; jumping around in the text, repeating certain lines, interrupting the continuity, comparing different expressions of the same phrase...1

Since its premiere on 21 September 1993 at the Alte Oper Frankfurt, Hans Zender’s “composed interpretation” Schuberts “Winterreise” has triumphed in concert halls all over the world. Other Zender interpretations of classical works before and after this – Dialog mit Haydn (1982), Schubert-Chöre (1986), Claude Debussy: Fünf Préludes (1991), Schumann-Phantasie (1997) – do not bear this subtitle, each presenting different solutions of approach between arrangement and new composition. Thus, it seems as if a beginning and at the same time a model case of creative advancement occurred in Schuberts “Winterreise”, which was followed thereafter (2010/11) only by Zender’s 33 Veränderungen über 33 Veränderungen. The fact that Zender dedicated the more extensive text Notizen zu meiner komponierten Interpretation von Schuberts “Winterreise” to precisely this work, which was not included in the other, consistently shorter work introductions in his volume of writings, but in the rather narrow, yet essential

chapter “Composition and Interpretation”, shows the extraordinary importance of this score.

Soon after the highly acclaimed concert performances, the work experienced a new reception that had not been envisaged from the outset, through dance theater – the most notable of which was probably John Neumeier‘s choreography for the Hamburg Ballett in 2001 – and much later also through music theater, whose various approaches the composer was initially quite skeptical about, but then, as long as the presentation of the work was conceived as complete and without interpolations, was consistently open-minded and sympathetic. After all, he himself had indirectly supported exactly these extended approaches in his aforementioned essay: “Music works have, as do plays, the chance to become rejuvenated through great interpretations. Then, these not only reveal something about the interpreter, but they also raise awareness of new aspects of the work.”2 Among these scenic realizations, Christian Spuck’s choreographic interpretation for the Ballett Zürich represented another highlight, receiving special recognition after the premiere on 13 October 2018, by winning the Prix Benois de la Danse.

It is not surprising that during scenic productions and general stage practice, the most likely request was for a piano reduction of Schuberts “Winterreise”. Consequently, the present edition also goes back to a scenic production, namely the aforementioned Zurich one.

Anyone who has experienced Zender’s wide-ranging, rich unraveling in the concert hall or even in the theater, will easily understand that the return to the classical piano setting

is only feasible at all with major restrictions. In this particular case, the quality of the piano reduction presented here lies in the omission of several extensions, be it additional motivic insertions or another instrumental color. Nevertheless, some progressions consequently deviate far from Schubert’s familiar model. It is precisely these larger and smaller deviations (choice of keys, tempi, cadenzas) that are given absolute attention. Moreover, several percussive passages require the imagination of the performance on the piano; in the case of the polymetric Nebensonnen [Sun Dogs] (No. 23), even a third piano hand would be necessary for a nearly adequate performance. In this respect, it must be unmistakably clear that the piano reduction is helpful exclusively for the preparation of the singer and/or a ballet company. Performances of Zender’s “composed interpretation” with piano accompaniment would be diametrically opposed to the intention of the work.

In any case, the present edition evokes the pianist’s conception of sound through the abundant indication of instrumental abbreviations. In many cases, the original dynamic indications have been taken from the score in order to convey an idea of the intensity or fragility of the respective instrumental sound. The experienced accompanist will draw conclusions for his accompaniment on the implementation on the piano. In most cases, the instrumental abbreviations (and corresponding dynamics) differentiate between the upper and lower piano systems. However, if the abbreviations are given only for the upper system, this indication also applies to the entire piano setting. The generally valid dynamics are then also placed between the systems.

The piano reduction is, of course, faithful to the score notation of the part, including phrasing, and it also adopts the

few ossia passages. Unlike the score, however, the classical key signature is used throughout. Rather than as a nostalgic “approach to Schubert,” this is done out of the practical consideration of keeping the notation as clear as possible. The use of the classical stemming, in which the note stems are directed downwards on the third line, also helps to achieve this. In addition, some minor errors that are still hidden in the printed scores of Schuberts “Winterreise” were silently corrected during editing.

The publisher would like to thank the conductor and composer Matthias Hermann for drawing attention to the existence of such a competent piano reduction, Christophe Barwinek for preparing and critically supervising the present edition through to printing, and ultimately and above all Hans Zender for his grandiose balancing act and for allowing us to present a piano reduction which is, after all, a quasi re-transformation of his work back to the original instrumentation.

The present edition has been prepared in memory of Czeslaw Barwinek, the arranger’s father and musical teacher, who passed away on 14 October 2020.
