Vorwort 2020 jährte sich zum 300. Male die Vollendung der Sei Solo á Violino senza Basso accompagnato von Johann Sebastian Bach, jenes Meilensteins der Violinliteratur, dessen Rezeption in interpretatorischer und kompositorischer Hinsicht erst gegen Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts einsetzte. Vorliegende Edition versteht sich als ein Beitrag zu diesem Jubiläum – als ein Blick zurück auf 150 Jahre kompositorischer Rezeptionsgeschichte, die sich in den hier erstmals (wieder) veröffentlichten Soloviolinwerken auf ebenso unterschiedliche wie eindrucksvolle Weise spiegelt.

Nach der 1802 erschienenen Erstausgabe der Sei Solo BWV 1001–1006 war es Ferdinand David, der am 8. Februar 1840 mehrere Sätze aus diesem Zyklus – darunter die Ciaccona aus der Partita II d-moll – mit einer von Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy hinzugefügten Klavierbegleitung zur nachweislich ersten öffentlichen Aufführung brachte.1 1843 publizierte Ferdinand David seine für die Praxis eingerichtete Ausgabe der Sei Solo, zehn Jahre später komponierte Robert Schumann zum gesamten Zyklus eine Klavierbegleitung – „harmonische Tragebänder“ in Schumanns eigenen Worten –, die zur Verbreitung dieser damals noch kaum bekannten Werke Bachs beitragen sollte. Robert Schumann hatte in seiner Ferdinand David gewidmeten 2. Großen Sonate für Violine und Pianoforte d-moll op. 121 (1851) eine eindrucksvolle Hommage an den Bach- und Mendelssohn-Interpreten David gestaltet, dieser jedoch wandte sich erst lange nach dem Tod seiner prägenden Komponistenfreunde Mendelssohn und Schumann der Komposition eines Soloviolinwerks zu – gleichsam als Resümee seiner lebenslangen Auseinandersetzung mit Bachs Sei Solo. Diese ca. 1872 entstandene Suite g-moll op. 43 Davids dürfte mithin das erste größere mehrsätzige Werk für Violine solo sein, das sich in vielen kompositorischen Details explizit auf Bachs Sonaten und Partiten BWV 1001–1006 bezieht; auf Bachs Sonata I g-moll BWV 1001 in seiner Tonart und formalen Anlage, in der Gavotte auf den entsprechenden Satz aus der Partita III E-dur BWV 1006. Ungewöhnlich erscheint als Eröffnungssatz der Suite das dreiteilige Menuett, dessen polyphon gestaltetes Esdur-Trio bereits das Anfangsmotiv des 3. Satzes, des Siciliano, anklingen lässt. Besonders reizvoll zeigt sich der Übergang vom Siciliano zur abschließenden Gigue: Am Ende des zunehmend dramatisch-theatralischen Siciliano bricht ein leidenschaftlich dialogisierendes Rezitativ hervor, aus dessen gleichsam fragender Beruhigung über dem dominantischen Orgelpunkt d sich nahtlos der Beginn der Gigue entwickelt – diese entpuppt sich sodann als eigentliche Tarantella. Nicht ohne Stolz schreibt Ferdinand David am 31. August 1872 an den Dresdner Konzertmeister-­Kollegen Johann Christoph Lauterbach: „Einstweilen bin ich sehr fleißig, habe noch eine Menge neuer Sachen geschrieben, unter Anderen eine Sonate in 4 Sätzen für Violine allein, bestehend aus Menuett, Gavotte, Siciliano u. Gigue, die mir so gut gefällt[,] daß ich mich gar nicht satt daran spielen kann, es kann sein ich täusche mich, aber ich halte sie für mein bestes Werk und ich möchte zu gerne Ihr Urteil darüber hören.“2 30 Jahre später war es Max Reger, der in seiner Rückbesinnung auf das Schaffen Bachs und mit der Unbefangenheit seiner ausschließlich pianistischen bzw. organistischen Praxis dem Soloviolinrepertoire weitreichende Impulse gab. So wurden Bachs Sonaten und Partiten für Violine solo wegweisend für Regers vier große Zyklen gleicher Besetzung, die Opera 42, 91, 117 und 131a.

Wie kein anderer Komponist seiner Zeit hat Reger mit seinen Sonaten, Chaconne-Sätzen, Präludien und Fugen für Violine solo

einen epochalen Beitrag zur geigerischen Bachrezeption geleistet; sein letztes Soloviolinwerk, das im Oktober 1915 entstandene Präludium e-moll, ist Adolf Busch gewidmet, der als Interpret Regers musikalisches Vermächtnis auch im amerikanischen Exil unter schwierigsten Bedingungen leidenschaftlich propagierte.

Schon früh, noch während seiner Studienjahre in Köln, hatte sich Adolf Busch für Regers Musik begeistert3 – Spuren dieser intensiven Auseinandersetzung offenbart Adolf Buschs erste, bereits 1908 entstandene Sonate D-dur für Violine solo in ihrer polyphonen Dichte und stark durchchromatisierten, modulationsreichen Textur. Verrät der harmonisch außerordentlich komplexe, geradezu sinfonisch imaginierte Eingangssatz in vielen rhetorischen Gesten – angefangen mit der für Bach so typischen figura cordata im 1. Takt – enge Bezüge zu den Fugen aus Bachs Sei Solo, so erscheint der langsame Satz in h-moll wie eine spätromantische Rückspiegelung der Sarabande aus Bachs Partita I h-moll BWV 1002. Weniger von Bach als von Brahms inspiriert mutet das abschließende Rondo an, Reminiszenzen an das Finale von Brahms’ Violinkonzert reflektieren ihrerseits die dort zahlreichen Assoziationen der Ciaccona aus Bachs Partita II d-moll BWV 1004. Adolf Buschs Sonate D-dur stellt ein faszinierendes frühes Zeugnis der Bachrezeption eines Musikers dar, der Bachs Sonaten und Partiten für Violine solo als einer der ersten Geiger ohne Auslassung einzelner Sätze komplett konzertant aufführte – und das nahezu 200 Jahre nach deren Entstehung.

Emil Bohnke gehörte als Bratschist 1919/20 der ersten Formation des später weltberühmten Busch-Quartetts an; ähnlich wie bei Adolf Busch liegen die stilistischen Wurzeln seines kompositorischen Schaffens bei Brahms und Reger. Im Gegensatz zu Adolf Busch vollzog Emil Bohnke in den 1920er Jahren bis zu seinem jähen Unfalltod am 11. Mai 1928 eine erstaunlich stringente Loslösung von spätromantischer Harmonik und Klangpracht, eine Emanzipation, die sein Komponistenfreund Heinz Tiessen 1928 resümierte: „Auch der ernste Emil Bohnke, vom Regereinfluss bisher nur langsam sich freimachend, schien in einer reifen, gelösten Arbeit für Solovioline: ,Präludium und Ciacona‘, op.15 Nr. 2, den Angelpunkt seiner Entwicklung zu zeigen.“4 Bohnkes Ciacona, deren in mehreren zeitgenössischen Quellen genanntes Präludium5 bislang unauffindbar geblieben ist, stellt zusammen mit der 1928 von Erich Kleiber uraufgeführten Sinfonie op. 16 einen Höhepunkt in seinem Œuvre dar. So gestaltet Bohnke seine 1924 entstandene Ciacona als Folge von 21 Variationen über ein achttaktiges freitonales, deutlich in zwei viertaktige Phrasen gegliedertes Thema. Ergeben die Anfänge as-g bzw. b-a der beiden Themenhälften bereits ein transponiertes B-A-C-H-Motiv, so erscheint dieses explizit zu Beginn der 7. Variation, später erneut in der 11. Variation. In gleichzeitiger dreifacher Transposition erklingt das B-A-C-H-Motiv in den ersten vier Takten der 12. Variation, die zudem erstmals die rhythmische Gestalt der Anfangstakte von Bachs Ciaccona d-moll aus der Partita II exponiert. Bohnkes Reifestil der mittleren 1920er Jahre zeigt sich in diesem BACH-Monument von düsterer Intensität, geprägt von großen Intervallspannungen im kontrastreichen Wechsel zwischen expansiven Gesten und affektbetonten Halbtonschritten, deren Wurzeln im expressiven Potenzial des B-A-C-H- Motivs liegen.

Fast ein Vierteljahrhundert nach Bohnkes Ciacona entstand 1948 die einzige Sonate für Violine solo von Walter Lessing, die exemplarisch die Aufbruchstimmung eines jungen Komponisten spiegelt, der in Deutschland nach 1945 den Anschluss an

5 die während der Nazi-Diktatur unterdrückten, letztlich verbotenen Strömungen der Neuen Musik mit aller Intensität und Kreativität sucht. Es ist einerseits der Neoklassizismus Hindemiths und Strawinskys, andererseits die pulsierende Rhythmik und motivische Detailarbeit Bartóks, die sich in dem der klassischen Sonatenhauptsatzform verpflichteten großen Eröffnungssatz zu einer persönlichen Synthese verbinden. Immer wieder, besonders im elegischen Epilog des abschließenden Adagios, leuchten Bach-Reminiszenzen auf – von den zahlreichen figura-cordata-Motiven im 1. Satz bis hin zum Lamento-Charakter des rhythmisch und gestisch stark am Vorbild Bachs orientierten 2. Satzes. Die freitonale, expressive Tonsprache dieser Sonate ist typisch für das vor allem kammermusikalisch geprägte und in der ersten Hälfte der 1950er Jahre durchaus erfolgreich rezipierte Schaffen Walter Lessings, das allzu frühen Abbruch fand, als Lessing 1954 an den Südwestfunk Baden-Baden – damals eines der Zentren des dogmatisch propagierten Serialismus – berufen wurde.

Als Ausgangsmaterial der 1995 entstandenen und 2009 revi­ dierten Toccata-Chaconne für Violine solo von Veit Erdmann-­ Abele kristallisiert sich der Tritonus heraus – aus seinem gleichsam janusköpfigen Profil entwickelt sich das ganze in sich rasch changierende zwölfteilige Werk. Auf engstem Raum gestaltet Erdmann-Abele einen farbenreichen Kosmos, der in freier Assoziation barocker Rhetorik die Ausdrucksstärke jedes einzelnen Intervallschritts neu belebt und somit beweist, dass auch an der Schwelle vom 20. zum 21. Jahrhundert scheinbar vertrautes einfaches Material sich als tragfähig für ein Stück unverbrauchter Neuer Musik erweisen kann. Toccatenartig impulsive, vorwärtsdrängende Segmente kontrastieren mit minimalistisch oszillierenden Teilen, die in ihren rhythmischen Elementen ebenso wie in ihrer polyphonen Dichte entfernt an Momente aus Bachs Sei Solo erinnern.

Mit ähnlicher Rhetorik der Intervalle spielt auch Anton Kuerti in seiner einzigen Sonata for solo violin aus dem Jahre 1998, die eine Mischform aus Sonate und Suite darstellt. So folgt der kapriziöse, tänzerisch beschwingte Eröffnungssatz in allen Details der klassischen Sonatenhauptsatzform, während sich die anschlie-

ßenden drei Sätze explizit auf die Grundmodelle der barocken Tanzsätze Bourrée, Sarabande und Gigue beziehen. Namentlich in den schnellen Sätzen wählt Kuerti einen humoristischen Blick auf die tradierten Formen: Im launigen Wechsel zwischen tonalen und dissonanten Floskeln gewinnt die Bourrée einen grotesken Charakter, die Gigue erhält ihren exaltierten Witz aus der Spannung von geradezu „Bachischer“ rhythmischer und artikulatorischer Gestalt in Konfrontation mit einer von jeglicher Tonalität losgelösten Harmonik. Allein die Schlüsse der beiden Teile der Gigue, ebenso deren virtuose Coda überraschen durch ihre tonalen Kadenzierungen. Ruhepol der ganzen Sonate ist die elegische Sarabande, die als Folge von jeweils zwei Variationen über das achttaktige Eingangsthema (bzw. dessen minimal veränderte Umkehrung) den expressiv-improvisatorischen Charakter der Sarabande aus Bachs Partita II d-moll BWV 1004 in Erinnerung ruft.

Auch 300 Jahre nach ihrer Entstehung haben Bachs Sei Solo nichts von ihrer Faszination und Inspirationskraft für Komponisten wie für Interpreten eingebüßt – so mögen vorliegende Zeugnisse schöpferischer Auseinandersetzung mit jenem Zy­klus ihrerseits den Weg ins Repertoire finden und dieses um unterschiedlichste Facetten bereichern.

Sämtliche Ergänzungen des Herausgebers sind durch Kleinstich (Akzidenzien) bzw. gestrichelte Bögen und eckige Klammern kenntlich gemacht. Der letzte Akkord in T. 18 des 1. Satzes lautet in der Quelle eis1-h1-gis2. Bei diesem Akkord, der im satztechnischen Kontext wenig plausibel erscheint, dürfte es sich im Vergleich mit der analogen Stelle Ende T. 65 um einen Schreibfehler handeln, der nun nach eis1-d2-gis2 korrigiert wurde.

Preface The year 2020 marked the 300th anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Sei Solo á Violino senza Basso accompagnato, that milestone of violin literature whose reception in interpretative and compositional terms did not begin until the middle of the 19th century. The present edition may be regarded as a contribution to this anniversary – as a look back at 150 years of compositional reception history, reflected in various and impressive ways in the solo violin works first (re)published here.

Ferdinand David was verifiably the first violinist, who, after the first edition of the Sei Solo BWV 1001–1006 published in 1802, first publicly performed several movements from this cycle on 8 February 1840 – including the Ciaccona from the Partita II in d minor – with a piano accompaniment added by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy.1 In 1843 David published his own practical edition of the Sei Solo, to which ten years later Robert Schumann composed a piano accompaniment for the entire cycle – “harmonic lanyards” in Schumann’s own words – to contribute to the dissemination of this then still-unknown work of Bach’s. In his 2.

Große Sonate für Violine und Pianoforte in d-moll op. 121 (1851), dedicated to Ferdinand David, Robert Schumann paid an impressive tribute to the Bach and Mendelssohn interpreter David, who, however, turned to the composition of a solo violin work only long after the deaths of his formative composer friends Mendelssohn and Schumann – quasi as a summary of his lifelong engagement with Bach’s Sei Solo. David’s Suite in g minor op. 43, composed ca. 1872, would therefore be the first larger multi-movement work for solo violin explicitly referring in many compositional details to Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas BWV 1001–1006, to Bach’s Sonata I in g minor BWV 1001 in its key and formal structure, and to the Gavotte in the corresponding movement from Partita III in E major BWV 1006. David’s three-part Menuett appears unusual as the opening movement of the Suite, whose polyphonic E-flat-major Trio already hints at the opening motif of the third movement, the Siciliano. Particularly appealing is the transition from the Siciliano to the final Gigue: at the close of the increasingly dramatic and theatrical Siciliano a passionately dialoguing recitative bursts forth, from whose quasi-questioning calming over the dominant organ point d the beginning of the Gigue develops seamlessly – this then turns out to be a real Tarantella. Not without pride, Ferdinand David writes his colleague, the Dresden concertmaster Johann Christoph Lauterbach, on 31 August 1872: “In the meantime, I have been very hard at work, have written a lot of new things, including a sonata in 4 movements for violin alone, consisting of a Menuett, Gavotte, Siciliano, and Gigue, which I like so much that I can’t play it enough; I may be wrong, but I consider it my best work and I would very much like to hear your opinion of it.”2 30 years later, it was Max Reger, who in returning to Bach’s work and with the naturalness of his exclusively pianistic and organistic experience, provided the solo violin repertoire with a far-reaching impetus. Thus, Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas for violin solo were path-breaking for Reger’s four great cycles with the same scoring, opp. 42, 91, 117, and 131a. As no other composer of his time, Reger made an epochal contribution to the violinists’ Bach reception with Sonatas, Chaconne movements, Preludes and Fugues for solo violin. His last solo-violin work, the Präludium in e minor, written in October 1915, is dedicated to Adolf Busch, who as interpreter passionately propagated Reger’s musical lega­cy even under the most difficult conditions in American exile.

Busch became enthusiastic about Reger’s music at an early age

while still a student in Cologne3 – traces of this intensive involvement are revealed in Busch’s first Sonate D-dur für Violine solo, composed as early as 1908, in its polyphonic density and remarkably chromatic texture, rich in modulation. While the harmonically extraordinarily complex, almost symphonically imagined opening movement reveals close references to the fugues from Bach’s Sei Solo in many rhetorical gestures – starting with the figura cordata in the first measure, so typical of Bach – the slow movement in b minor appears like a late romantic mirroring of the Sarabande from Bach’s Partita I in b minor BWV 1002. The final Rondo seems less inspired by Bach than by Brahms, while reminiscences of the Finale of Brahms’s Violin Concerto reflect the numerous associations with the Ciaccona from Bach’s Partita II in d minor BWV 1004. Busch’s Sonate D-dur [Sonata in D major] represents a fascinating early testimony to the Bach reception of a musician who was one of the first violinists to perform Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin completely in concert without omitting any individual movements – and this almost 200 years after their genesis.

Emil Bohnke was violist in the first formation (1919/1920) of the later world-famous Busch Quartet; as with Adolf Busch, the stylistic roots of his compositional work go back to Brahms and Reger. Unlike Busch, Emil Bohnke achieved in the 1920s (up to his sudden accidental death on 11 May 1928) an astonishingly stringent detachment from late romantic harmony and rich sound, an emancipation that his composer friend Heinz Tiessen summed up in 1928: “Even the serious Emil Bohnke, so far only slowly freeing himself from the Reger influence, seemed to show the pivotal point of his development in a mature, original work for solo violin: ‘Präludium and Ciacona,’ op.15 no. 2.”4 Bohnke’s Ciacona, whose Prelude5 mentioned in several contemporary sources has so far not been found, represents a high point in his oeuvre, together with the Symphony op. 16 premiered in 1928 by Erich Kleiber.

Thus, Bohnke structured his Ciacona, composed in 1924, as a series of 21 variations on an eight-measure free-tonal theme clearly divided into two four-measure phrases. If the beginnings in aj-g or bj-a of the two halves of the subject already result in a transposed B-A-C-H motif, then this explicitly appears at the opening of the 7th variation, later again in the 11th variation. The B-A-C-H motif is heard in three different, concurrent transpositions within the first four measures of the 12th variation, which also exposes for the first time the rhythmic shape of the opening measures of Bach’s Ciaccona in d minor from Partita II. Bohnke’s maturity style of the mid-1920s is evident in this BACH monument of dark intensity, characterized by large interval tensions in the contrasting alternation between expansive gestures and affective semitone steps, whose roots lie in the expressive potential of the B-A-C-H motif.

Almost a quarter of a century after Bohnke’s Ciacona, Walter Lessing composed in 1948 his only Sonate für Violine solo, exemplarily reflecting the inventive mood of a young composer seeking with all intensity and creativity in post-1945 Germany to affiliate with the New Music currents that had been suppressed and ultimately forbidden during the Nazi dictatorship. Combined in a personal synthesis is, on the one hand, the neoclassicism of Hindemith and Stravinsky, and on the other, the pulsating rhythm and detailed transformation of motifs by Bartók in the large opening movement based on the classical sonata form. Again and again, especially in the closing Adagio’s elegiac epilogue, Bach reminis-

8 cences illuminate – from the numerous figura cordata motifs in the 1st movement to the lamentation character of the 2nd movement, strongly based rhythmically and gesturally on the Bach model. The expressive, freely-tonal language of this sonata is typical of Walter Lessing’s oeuvre that is primarily characterized by chamber music. His language, quite successfully received in the first half of the 1950s, came to an all-too-early break-off, when in 1954 Lessing was appointed to the Südwestfunk Baden-Baden – then one of the centers of dogmatically-propagated serialism.

The tritone is distilled as the starting material for the Toccata-­ Chaconne für Violine solo by Veit Erdmann-Abele, composed in 1995 and revised in 2009. This entire, rapidly changing twelvepart work develops from the tritone’s Janus-headed profile. Erdmann-Abele creates a colorful cosmos in a very small space, reviving in free association with Baroque rhetoric the expressiveness of each individual interval step and proving that even on the threshold between the 20th and 21st centuries, seemingly familiar, simple material is viable for a fresh New Music. Impulsive toccata-like, propulsive segments contrast with minimalist oscillating components, vaguely reminiscent of some movements from Bach’s Sei Solo in their rhythmic elements as well as in their polyphonic density.

Anton Kuerti also plays with similar intervallic rhetoric in his single Sonata for solo violin of 1998, a hybrid of sonata and suite. The capricious, dance-like opening movement follows classic sonata form in every detail, while the three following movements relate explicitly to basic models of the Baroque dance movements, the Bourrée, Sarabande, and Gigue. Particularly in the fast movements, Kuerti takes a humorous look at the traditional forms: In the witty alternation between tonal and dissonant clichés, the Bourrée takes on a grotesque character; the Gigue

gets its exalted esprit from the tension of its almost “Bachian” rhythmic and articulatory shape in confrontation with a harmony detached from any tonality. The endings of the two parts of the Gigue alone, together with their virtuoso coda, surprise with their tonal cadencing. The calm haven of the entire sonata is the ele­ giac Sarabande; as a series of two variations on the eight-measure opening theme (or its minimally changed inversion), it evokes the expressive-improvisational character of the Sarabande from Bach’s Partita II in d minor BWV 1004.

Even 300 years after its genesis, Bach’s Sei Solo have lost none of their fascination and inspirational power for composers and performers alike – so may these testimonies of creative engagement with that cycle may find their way into the repertoire and enrich it with the widest variety of facets.

Eröffnet wird die Anthologie In the Spirit of Bach mit der Suite g-moll op. 43 von Ferdinand David – einem epochalen Beitrag zur Bach-Renaissance im engsten Umfeld von Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy und Robert Schumann.

Die weiteren 5 Werke – alle in Erstausgaben – dokumentieren Aspekte der Bachrezeption von der Spätromantik, wie sie sich in der 1908 entstandenen Sonate D-dur von Adolf Busch spiegelt, über die Klassische Moderne bis zur Gegenwart. In ihrer individuellen Stilistik und formalen Gestalt sind sie beredte Zeugnisse der ungebrochenen Faszination, die Bachs Sei Solo auch im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert auf Komponisten unterschiedlichster Prägung ausüben: mithin eine hochkarätige Bereicherung des Repertoires für Violine solo.

The anthology In the Spirit of Bach opens with the Suite in G minor op. 43 by Ferdinand David – an epochal contribution to the Bach renaissance in the immediate vicinity of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Robert Schumann.

The other 5 works are all in first editions documenting aspects of Bach’s reception from late Romanticism, as reflected in Adolf Busch’s 1908 Sonata in D major, through Classical Modernism, up to the present. In their individual styles and formal design, they are an eloquent testimony to the unbroken fascination that Bach’s Sei Solo also exert on various composers in the 20th and 21st centuries. A high-caliber addition to the solo violin repertoire.
