Vorwort
Dezember 1946 in Bad Gottleuba.
Preface The composition of organ sonatas was a popular domain in the Romantic period, with composers such as Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809–1847) and Josef Rheinberger (1839–1901) considered exemplary here within the German-speaking world. Their role as models is also perceptible in Camillo Schumann’s sonatas, all of them composed between 1899 and 1910. Camillo Schumann, coming from a Saxon musical family, was born on 10 March 1873 in Königstein/Saxony, the son of the municipal music director Clemens Schumann (1839– 1918). From 1889 to 1893 he was a student at the Leipzig Conservatory where he received extensive training in music theory, composition, piano, and organ. In 1894 he moved to Berlin to complete his studies at the then Stern Conservatory. As early as 1896 he was appointed organist at the Eisenach Georgenkirche [St. George’s Church], Bach’s baptismal church, holding this office until 1914. Most frequently represented in his organ concert programs besides the Baroque masters J.S. Bach and Handel, were the Romantics Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Rheinberger, Liszt, Karl Piutti, Gustav Adolf Merkel, together with Samuel de Lange to whom he dedicated his first organ sonata. As pianist, organist, and chamber musician, he was a respected interpreter, granted for his services the title of “Grand Ducal Saxon Music Director and Court Organist.” In 1911 he became a member of the Gemeinschaftlichen Sachverständigen-Kammer Thüringer Staaten für Werke der Tonkunst in Weimar [Thuringian States’ Chamber of Experts on Works of Music in Weimar]. Camillo Schumann relocated to Bad Gottleuba in 1914, devoting himself there entirely to his compositional work. The period of war and its aftermath brought him into finanicial difficulties leading to his taking on further church-music duties from 1921 until his death in Bad Gottleuba on 29 December 1946.
The Sonatas Within Camillo Schumann’s extensive oeuvre, the six sonatas for organ can be considered a core area that originated between 1899 and 1910 during his tenure at the Eisenach Georgenkirche. Noteworthy is the fact that up to the 4th sonata (1907), Schumann based the final movements of each sonata, always the musical climax of each work, on old compositional models. Thus, he uses well-known chorale melodies as fugue subjects or involves them in elaborating a kind of Romantic chorale fantasia. The fugue of the 2nd sonata is based on the tonal sequence B-A-C-H [B-flat-A-C-B], thus paying homage to the highly venerated doyen of organ music. In the later sonatas of 1910, the composer moved away from these classical borrowings and increasingly composed more independently. With the exception of the three-movement 3rd sonata, the organ sonatas generally unfold in four movements without adhering to a formal stereotype. Sonata No. 1 in D minor, op. 12 (1899) The final movement deals with the chorale “Lobt Gott, ihr Christen, freuet euch” (text variant of “Lobt Gott, ihr Christen, allzu gleich”) in the form of a chorale fantasia. The sonata is dedicated to the Dutch-German organist, teacher, and composer Samuel de Lange (1840–1911).
V
Sonata No. 2 in B flat major, op. 16 (1900) Only in the last movement of the first print are there fingerings, etc., that have been adopted in the present edition. Sonata No. 3 in C minor, op. 29 (1906) Despite being in only three movements, this sonata is the equivalent in scope of the other works. Sonata No. 4 in F major, op. 67 (1907): The closing movement is composed as a fugue on “Lobe den Herren, den mächtigen König der Ehren.” Only in the 2nd to 4th movements are there fingerings, etc., shown as in the autograph. Sonata No. 5 in G minor, op. 40 (1910) The only sonata giving fingerings, etc., as listed in both sources, autograph and first print. Sonata No. 6 in A minor, op. 110 (1910): A brilliant, virtuoso toccata concludes this work, the most extensive in the collection. Fingerings, etc., are notated in the autograph for the entire sonata.
The Edition In 1954 the music- and local-history researcher Harald Schurz (1932–1995) founded the Königssteiner Musikarchiv, in which (until its dissolution) a.o. the main part of Camillo Schumann’s estate was preserved. The collection has since been located in the Sächsisches Hauptstaatsarchiv Dresden [Saxon State Main Archives in Dresden], catalogued under the Harald Schurz personal estate, No. 12814. For all sonatas the autograph manuscripts could be evaluated, whereas for sonatas 1, 2, 3 and 5, the first editions published during Schumann‘s lifetime could be evaluated additionally. For these sonatas the first prints were used as the main source, for passages in question the autographs have been consulted and the findings are discussed in the critical report. Such questions frequently pertain to accidentals not always clearly placed and/or sometimes obviously forgotten. Editorial emendations are indicated in square brackets. For the posthumously published sonatas (4 and 6), however, the autograph was used as the main source. Schumann’s fingerings and pedalings are occasionally odd, though these have been adopted verbatim, corrected only in obviously wrong places, and identified accordingly. The distribution over three manuals was adopted analogous to the sources, using the terms I., II., and III., rather than rendered as Hauptwerk, Schwellwerk, Rückpositiv, or Brustwerk. This volume presents for the first time a complete edition of the six organ sonatas, showing Camillo Schumann’s musical ingenuity and compositional development. May it be widely used! My special thanks go to Breitkopf & Härtel publisher Nick Pfefferkorn, who made available to me all accessible sources and ever passionately supported and promoted the editorial work.
