Vorwort Heute ist uns Adolf Busch (1891–1952) vor allem bekannt als der Primarius des legendären Busch-Quartetts, welches er 1912 gegründet hat. Er war der größte Quartettspieler des letzten Jahrhunderts und der am meisten gefragte Solo-Geiger zwischen den beiden Weltkriegen. Sein Repertoire umfasste sämtliche große Solo-Konzerte und er arbeitete mit Dirigenten wie Nikisch, Toscanini, Walter, Furtwängler und seinem älteren Bruder Fritz Busch zusammen. Auch sein 1935 gegründetes Kammerorchester „The Busch Chamber Players“ war in ganz Europa erfolgreich und brachte große Neuerungen in der Aufführungspraxis von Bach.

Und mit seinem Klavierpartner Rudolf Serkin schrieb er schlicht Konzertgeschichte.

Darüber hinaus war Adolf Busch ein hervorragender Komponist, dessen Werke sowohl innerhalb als auch außerhalb Deutsch­ lands aufgeführt wurden. Die Tatsache, dass diese Kompositionen schon früh von drei großen Häusern (Breitkopf, Simrock und Eulenburg) verlegt wurden, zeigt, dass man sich schon damals der außerordentlichen Qualität dieser Musik bewusst war.

Die politischen Veränderungen in Deutschland ab 1933 brachten jedoch eine dramatische Wende in Buschs Leben: Nach dem Erlass der judenfeindlichen Gesetze durch die Nazis war es ihm unmöglich, weiterhin in Deutschland zu konzertieren. Diese Gesetze standen im nicht zu vereinbarenden Gegensatz zu Adolf Buschs klarer Vorstellung von Moral, An­stand und Kunst. Trotz Hitlers Bemühungen, „unseren deutschen Geiger“ zurückzuholen, boykottierte Busch von 1933 bis 1949 konsequent seine Heimat und mied alle ehemaligen Nazis oder Mitläufer.

Seine Karriere als Solist und vor allem auch als Komponist erlitt dadurch allerdings einen drastischen Knick und sein Einkommen wurde empfindlich reduziert. Als Mussolini 1938 seine Rasse-Gesetze verabschiedete, verweigerte Busch auch in Italien, wo er sehr populär war, jedwede musikalische Aktivität. Ein Jahr später emigrierte er mit seiner Familie und seinen Quartett-Kollegen in die USA. Obwohl er dort mit seinem Schwiegersohn Rudolf Serkin erfolgreiche Duo-Konzerte gab und mit den dort erneut gegründeten „Chamber Players“ durch das ganze Land tourte, fand er nie wirkliche Anerkennung – seine Zeit als großer Geiger war vorbei. Kurz vor seinem Lebensende gründete er die Marlboro Summer School, die seitdem jeden Sommer Kurse und Konzerte für Profis und Amateure anbietet.

In den letzten Jahren erfreut sich das kompositorische Werk von Adolf Busch zu Recht wieder größerer Aufmerksamkeit.

Breitkopf & Härtel erweitert mit dieser Edition sein Angebot an Kompositionen von Adolf Busch.

Das op. 53 umfasst insgesamt vier kammermusikalische Werke, die zwischen 1927 und 1943 entstanden sind. Gemeinsam ist ihnen die Kombination Klarinette mit diversen Streichern, die konkrete Besetzung und der Charakter dieser Stücke ist allerdings erstaunlich verschieden. Während op. 53a, c und d alle

die Widmung „meiner lieben Frau Frieda“ tragen – Frieda, die erste Ehefrau von Adolf Busch, war Amateur-Klarinettistin –, ist die Serenade op. 53b „Herrn Dr. Hans Ritz in Freundschaft zugeeignet“. Gertrud und Hans Ritz gehörten zur sozialen und kulturellen Elite in Basel und auch zum engeren Freundeskreis der Familie Busch-Serkin. Adolf Busch hat die Serenade op. 53b noch vor der Emigration konzipiert, aber erst 1943 in den USA vollendet.

Die Besetzung Klarinette, Violine und Viola lassen sofort an Max Regers Werke für Flöte, Violine und Viola (op. 77a und 141a) denken. Und wie Reger zeigt auch Busch hier eine gewisse mozartische Leichtigkeit, die aber keineswegs oberflächlich daherkommt, sondern äußerst komplex ausgearbeitet ist. Die Virtuosität, der filigrane Humor, die Verarbeitung der reichen Thematik, aber auch die klassische Form (der erste Satz weist eine Sonatenform auf, beim Finale kann man von einem Rondo sprechen, während die beiden langsamen Mittelsätze in dreiteiliger Liedform stehen) zeigen erneut, wie verwurzelt Adolf Busch in der polyphonen deutschen Kompositions-Tradition war.

Von der Serenade ist kein Autograph überliefert, allerdings existieren zwei Stimmensätze, die beide in der Paul-Sacher-Stiftung in Basel aufbewahrt werden. Der erste Stimmensatz enthält eine Reihe von Korrekturen, die im zweiten ausgeführt sind. Letzterer diente als Vorlage für diese Edition und besteht aus Transparenten. Das könnte zusammen mit der Korrektur der Stimmen auf eine geplante Drucklegung hindeuten, die aber dann nicht er­­folgt ist.

Aufgrund der Überarbeitung der Stimmen wurde in dieser Ausgabe das Notenbild nur behutsam modernisiert. Auch wenn Adolf Busch in anderen Werken oft nicht sehr genau notiert, wurden vermeintliche Unstimmigkeiten in der Artikulation in dieser Ausgabe bewusst nicht angeglichen und die Entscheidung den Interpreten überlassen, da es scheint, dass der Komponist hier absichtlich mit Gegensätzen und Varianten gespielt hat. Entsprechend wurden auch die Eigenheiten in der Vorzeichensetzung, insbesondere die unterschiedlichen parallelen Tonarten, belassen. Einige wenige offensichtliche Fehler wurden stillschweigend korrigiert.

Der Schlusssatz ist im Verhältnis zu den vorhergehenden Sätzen sehr lang. Für eine eventuell gewünschte Kürzung schlage ich einen Sprung von Mitte Takt 85 nach Mitte Takt 157 vor.

Preface Nowadays, Adolf Busch (1891–1952) is particularly remembered as the principal violinist of the legendary Busch Quartet, founded by him in 1912. He was the greatest quartet player of the last century and the most sought after solo violinist during the period between the world wars. His repertory included all major solo concertos, and he worked with conductors like Nikisch, Toscanini, Walter, Furtwängler, and his older brother Fritz Busch. Founded by him in 1935, his chamber orchestra “The Busch Chamber Players” was successful throughout Europe and brought about major innovations to the performance practice of Bach. And with his piano partner Rudolf Serkin, he plainly has gone down in concert history.

Beyond that, Adolf Busch was an outstanding composer whose works were performed both in and outside of Germany. The fact that these compositions were published quite early by three big publishing houses (Breitkopf, Simrock and Eulenburg), shows the awareness of the extraordinary quality even back then.

The political changes in Germany as from 1933 lead to a dramatic turn in Busch’s life: It was impossible for Busch to continue playing concerts in Germany after the enactment of the Nazi anti-Semitic laws. Those laws were in absolute contradiction to Adolf Busch’s clear conception of morals, decency and art. In spite of Hitler’s efforts to persuade “our German violinist” to return, Bush consistently boycotted his native country from 1933 to 1949 and avoided all former Nazis and followers.

This drastically damaged his career as soloist and composer, and his income was considerably reduced. When in 1938 Mussolini passed his race laws, Busch also refused all musical activities in Italy, where he had been very popular. The following year, he emigrated with his family and quartet colleagues to the USA. In spite of successful duet concerts with his son-inlaw Rudolf Serkin and tours through the whole country with the re-founded “Chamber Players,” he was never to be fully appreciated – his time as a great violinist was over. Shortly before his death, he founded the Marlboro Summer School, which since then has offered summer courses and concerts for professional and amateur musicians alike.

In the past years, Adolf Busch’s compositional oeuvre has, with good reason, once again attracted more attention. With this edition, Breitkopf & Härtel has expanded its range with compositions

by Adolf Busch.

Op. 53, composed between 1927 and 1943, includes altogether four chamber music pieces, all of them combining the clarinet with various strings. The exact scoring and character of these pieces is, however, surprisingly dissimilar: While op. 53a, c, and

d are all dedicated “to my dear wife Frieda” – Adolf Busch’s first wife who was an amateur clarinetist – the Serenade op. 53b is “dedicated in friendship to Dr. Hans Ritz.” Gertrud and Hans Ritz belonged to the social and cultural elite in Basel and also to the inner circle of friends around the Busch-Serkin family. Adolf Busch had drawn up the Serenade op. 53b before immigrating in 1939 to the USA, though he did not finish it until 1943.

The scoring for clarinet, violin, and viola is reminiscent of Max Reger’s works for flute, violin, and viola (opp. 77a and 141a). And like Reger, Busch shows a certain Mozartian light-heartedness that is in no way superficial, but extremely sophisticated. The virtuosity, the filigree humor, the treatment of the wealth of themes, but also the classical form (the first movement is in sonata-allegro form, the final movement suggests a rondo, while both slow middle movements are written in three-part song form) once again reveal how deeply Adolf Busch was rooted in the polyphonic German compositional tradition.

No autograph of this serenade is extant, though two sets of parts do exist, both preserved in the Paul-Sacher-Stiftung in Basel.

Numerous corrections in the first set of parts were already made in the second set that is written on transparency paper and served as the model for the present edition. This, together with the revision of the parts, could indicate that a publication was planned, which did not then occur.

Owing to the revision of the parts the music text in this edition has been modernized only very cautiously. Even though Adolf Busch was not very precise in notating others of his works, the ostensible inconsistencies in the articulation have deliberately not been reconciled and adjusted in this edition. The decision is left to interpreters, for here the composer seems to have intentionally played with contrasts and variants. The idiosyncratic placement of accidentals, particularly in the various parallel keys, has similarly been retained, with only a few obvious mistakes tacitly corrected.

The final movement is very long relative to those preceding it. For a potential cut I would suggest to omit the music text between the middle of m. 85 an the middle of m. 167.
