Recommendations Steffen Wolf’s “Vaccai” lieder are ideal for whoever works with the German lied – beginners, voice students, especially those in their first semesters, and, obviously, all who love to sing. What’s so wonderful is that these lieder are not dry etudes; instead, one is immediately “making music.” Moreover, one can practice not only form and expression, but also technical aspects such as breath control, intonation, legato, agility and voice treatment. Prof. Margreet Honig, Amsterdam
Outstanding! A truly practical concept for use as a technical and formative introduction to lied singing. And let’s not forget that it is also a highly useful tool in dealing with the German language as well, especially for non-native speakers. Kammersänger Prof. Tom Krause (†), Hamburg
As part of my master class for lied singing at the Akademie Bad Urach in October 2013, I was given a vocal method called A German “Vaccai” after poems by Heinrich Heine. After working very closely with it, I can truly say that this instructional work provides an outstanding survey of the rudiments of singing for young singers. I am convinced that this German “Vaccai” is exactly what it takes to meet the demands of a younger singer generation. This is why I commend this volume very highly. Kammersänger Prof. Peter Schreier (†), Dresden
A little book of vocal exercises inspired by the Italian Vaccai has long been overdue. And here it is now: Paths to Classical Singing – A German “Vaccai” Method by Steffen Wolf on texts by Heinrich Heine. The talented singers who are sparsely strewn about Germany will now be able to discover many fruitful exercises through the simplest and most charming musical examples. The sophisticated poems of Heinrich Heine can stimulate the singer’s enjoyment of a perfect diction. Let us hope that in all institutes of higher learning which use German for teaching, the “Wolf” will become part of the indispensable curriculum.

And then I feel like a nightingale and could sing...1
The “Vaccai” – impossible to imagine a conservatory music library without it, anywhere in the world; impossible, also, to imagine its absence from the repertoire collections of professional singers and amateurs, voice teachers and students: The Metodo pratico di canto italiano of the Italian composer and voice teacher Nicola Vaccai (1790–1848) has been considered since its publication in 1832 as the ultimate groundwork for Italian singing, and as the preparatory book for introducing nearly all levels of beginning vocal artists to the challenges of cultivated singing. As to the romantic German lied, however, there was no “Vaccai” corresponding to the Italian one – although the German language, owing to its wealth of consonants and vowel colors, allows a sheer inexhaustible onomatopoeic breadth of variations and sound nuances, and helps establish the importance of the romantic lied. The singer and composer Steffen Wolf has closed this gap by writing 24 songs which, as exercises in lied form, give a technical and artistic boost to beginners and advanced singers on their way to proficiency, and pay tribute to the linguistic demands of the German lied. Each song devotes itself intensively to a fundamental technical or artistic matter and is supplied with short pedagogical comments that arose in conjunction with Prof. Sabine Kirchner (Hamburg). Keeping in mind the contemporaneity of Vaccai and Franz Schubert – whose Winterreise (The Winter Journey) was published only five years before Vaccai’s instructional method – the style of the pieces strongly reflects that of the art song of the romantic era. Some of the pieces are easy to learn, and there are exercises that are adjusted to the high technical demands of this genre. The piano part is kept rather simple so that the accompanying voice teacher can fully concentrate on the song. For his 24 exercises in lied form, Steffen Wolf has selected poems or lines of poems by Heinrich Heine2, whose dominating presence in the art song is justified by the sound of his poetry, by his evocative pictorial language and, not least, by its succinct and clear form. Thus the pieces are kept short and varied, and also open the door to humor through Heine’s style. Like their Italian models, Wolf’s miniatures are not etudes but always “genuine” songs, and thus equally appropriate for practicing, music-making and performances. The advantage of the German “Vaccai” is – to quote Brahms – “that you do not always hear the steps of a giant marching behind you.” This can be the case when a singer confronts the challenges of a lied by Schumann or Schubert. Analogous to the Italian model, the German “Vaccai” is being printed in a slender volume in editions for high, middle and low voice. For each volume, there are audio tracks of the songs in the respective voice range sung by soprano Miriam Alexandra, alto Yvi Jänicke, baritone Dávid Csizmár and the composer (tenor) himself. The singers are accompanied by the pianist Henning Lucius, who also recorded the piano playbacks. The audio tracks are available for free download at www.breitkopf.com (please enter EB 8849 in the search box). In addition a PDF file with the title Work Examples (Arbeitsbeispiele) is provided there. It contains a little collection of excerpts from well-known lieder by Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn and Beethoven, which function as application examples and are placed opposite the corresponding exercises from the German “Vaccai”.
On the Phonetic Transcription
Steffen Wolf Carmen Hillers
The international phonetic transcription is a good aid to help non-native speakers develop a feeling for the correct pronunciation of the Heine texts. At the same time, native speakers can use it in cases of doubt as to, for example, dialectal peculiarities. However, the complexity of the subject of vowel sounds, and the refined distinctions between the spoken and the sung lyrics cannot always be covered. This applies in particular to the diverse appearance and complicated rules of pronunciation of the vowel E in suffixes (see lied no. 6). The subject of pronunciation and vowel sounds in particular is a very complex issue and can only be hinted at. In case of uncertainties we recommend the use of the dictionary Deutsche Bühnensprache – Hochsprache von Theodor Siebs, Köln: A. Ahn 141927 or the Deutsche Aussprachewörterbuch, mentioned in the following. Steffen Wolf Carmen Hillers
The phonetic transcription accompanying the German lieder texts is based on the international phonetic alphabet (IPA) and complies with the latest edition of the reference book Deutsches Aussprachewörterbuch by Eva-Maria Krech, Eberhard Stock, Ursula Hirschfeld, Lutz Christian Anders, Berlin: Walter de Gruyter 2009. For a first approach to the phonetic alphabet, the page explaining the phonetic symbols of a basic German dictionary (for example: Oxford Essential German Dictionary, Oxford: Oxford University Press 2009) can be consulted. Here, all common phonemes in both languages can be found. In the lieder texts, prefixes ending with the letter r as well as monosyllabic words were transcribed by means of vocalisation. This is to be considered a recommendation; decisions in terms of interpretation ought not to be restricted. In order to keep the words as a unit and thus facilitate reading, hyphenation was omitted entirely in the transcription. My special thanks go out to Franciska Eisenschmidt and Michael Jackenkroll for their keen and competent eye on the small characters and for their great help.

4 Tritonus (S. 18)
I Intervalle 1 Sekunde (S. 12) „Die Kleine, die Feine“
6 Sexte (S. 22)
„Das emotionalste Intervall“
3 Quarte (S. 16)
Text: Die Heimkehr, LXXI Vortragsbezeichnung: Innig, zart
Text: Lyrisches Intermezzo, XXXIV Vortragsbezeichnung: Lebhaft, keck, gut zu deklamieren (Beginn); Der Kopf spricht: (T. 1); Das Herz spricht: (T. 10); Das Lied spricht: (T. 19)

Pedagogical Comments (Exemplary and in short form)
4 Tritonus (p. 18)
I Intervals 1 Second (p. 12)
“The sweet one, the fine
“The Devil in music” one” 1
Text: Die Heimkehr (The Homecoming), LXXXV Performance instruction: flowing, delicate What is particularly important in the first song is to distinguish carefully between the minor and major second and to intone it not too broadly, especially when descending, and not too narrowly, when ascending. The image of an endlessly flowing brook is ideally suited as a technical model for the songful legato. It is recommended to practice the piece as a vocalise as well.
Text: Lyrisches Intermezzo (Lyrical Intermezzo), LXIII Performance instruction: softly, melancholic Staccato exercises are a good preparation for singing longer, legato lines. The first five notes, for example, (“Wo ich bin, mich rings...”) can initially be practiced with rhythmic precision and without hesitation as evenly paced eighth notes. To maintain the rhythmic accuracy of long notes it is helpful to underlay them in one’s mind with a repetition of smaller note values. At the same time, a forward drive must be perceptible. A gentle crescendo and decrescendo movement helps maintain the fluidity of the note.
The onomatopoeic character of the natural sounds which the hiker hears (“zirpt”/chirps; “Plätschern”/gurgle) should be deliberately included in the shaping of the piece.
The darkly hued tone of the vocal line is adapted to the melancholic mood of the piece – it also includes the vowel “i” which tends to be bright. The atmosphere is transformed thanks to the major third on the last word, “Licht”.
2 Third (p. 14)
5 Fifth (p. 20)
“Sweet thirds”
Text: Die Heimkehr (The Homecoming), XII Performance instruction: mysterious Upbeats in singing demand special attention, as the vocal line does not begin after the upbeat, but before it, with the entire tension belonging to it. In this song, each phrase begins with an upbeat. As to the eighth notes, all hastiness should be avoided. They should be fully and carefully sung out and consciously held out for their entire length. The secondary syllables should remain unstressed, but should not interrupt the flow of the sound. Consecutive eighth notes such as “Ne-bel be-(deckt)” or “rauschen die” should be taken as heavy-light-light.
“Archaic Sound”
Text: Die Heimkehr (The Homecoming), LXXI Performance instruction: calmly striding The word “stehen” prompts one to make two fundamental observations: the pair of consonants “st” does not sound on its own, but must be placed precisely on the pitch of the high note already by the first fifth of the piece. One of the many pronunciation rules in the German language concerns the letter “h” in the middle of a word, for example at the word “stehen” (m. 2). The “h” is not spoken here.
6 Sixth (p. 22)
“The most emotional interval”
3 Fourth (p. 16)
Text: Die Heimkehr (The Homecoming), LXXI Performance instruction: intimate, delicate
Text: Lyrisches Intermezzo (Lyrical Intermezzo), XXXIV Performance instruction: lively, cocky, with good declamation (beginning); the head speaks: (m. 1); the heart speaks: (m. 10); the song speaks: (m. 19).
The many shadings of vowels and the wealth of consonants are a specialty of the German language. The pronunciation of the vowels depends on the consonants, which influence the preceding or following vowel, and prepare their “bed”.
“Take note!”
The ironic ductus demands a cautious articulation. Thus, for example, the “ch” in “Ach” and the successive commas must be clearly audible. The rests within the vocal line should not interrupt the interconnection among the sentences (“Ach, wenn ich nur der Schemel wär, …”). The eighth-note upbeats deserve particular attention here. If one follows the eighth-note motion of the piano, a rhythmic clarity results on its own.
1 Heinrich Heine, Lyrisches Intermezzo (Lyrical Intermezzo), III.
The variety of “E” sounds can be conveniently illustrated with this song.2 “Der,” “er” and “Weg” – here the “e” is long and closed (as in “day” but without the y); “er-” as a prefix, however, is short and open “e,” like “Welt” (“best”). In the secondary syllables the “e” is to be spoken softly, as with “Be-(gleiter”) and (“Hau-)se” (“the”). 2 The pronunciation rules for “E” sounds are complicated, which is why this theme can only be alluded to in passing here. For more in-depth information we recommend the volume Deutsche Bühnensprache – Hochsprache by Theodor Siebs, Köln: A. Ahn 141927, the dictionary Deutsches Aussprachewörterbuch von Eva-Maria Krech; Eberhard Stock, Ursula Hirschfeld, Lutz Christian Anders, Berlin: Walter de Gruyter 2009 or the dictionary Oxford Essential German Dictionary, Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2009.

I Intervalles
4 Triton (p. 18)
1 Seconde (p. 12)
Texte : Lyrisches Intermezzo (Intermezzo lyrique), LXIII Indications d’expression : doucement, mélancolique
1 Heinrich Heine : Lyrisches Intermezzo (Intermezzo lyrique), III.
« Diabolus in musica »
