Vorwort Der tschechische Violinpädagoge Otakar Ševčik wurde am 22. März 1852 in Horaždovice geboren. Seine früheste Musik­ unterweisung erhielt er von seinem Vater: Anfänglichen Gesangs- und Klavierspielübungen schloss sich bald auch der erste Violinunterricht an. Als Vierzehnjähriger setzte Ševčik seine Violinstudien am Prager Konservatorium bei Anton Bennewitz (1833–1926) systematisch fort und beendete sie nach vier Jahren erfolgreich mit dem Vortrag des Beethoven-Konzerts. Ehe er endgültig seiner eigentlichen Berufung folgte und sich ausschließlich der pädagogischen Arbeit widmete, stellte er noch für einige Jahre sein geigerisches Können als Konzertmeister in Prag, Salzburg und Wien unter Beweis. 1875 tat er dann den entscheidenden Schritt und übernahm eine Professur am Konservatorium in Kiew, dem er 18 Jahre lang treu blieb, bis ihn – den mittlerweile berühmt gewordenen Pädagogen – der Ruf weiterer Wirkungsstätten erreichte: Prag, Písek, Wien, nochmals Prag und zuletzt endgültig Písek waren, unterbrochen von wiederholten Aufenthalten in verschiedenen großen Städten Amerikas sowie in London und Salzburg, die Stationen seiner Lehrtätigkeit, die er mit unverminderter Kraft bis zu seinem Tode am 18. Januar 1934, im hohen Alter von über 80 Jahren, ausübte.

Die Zahl seiner Schüler belief sich wohl auf ein halbes Tausend. Aus vielen Ländern strömten sie ihm zu, und nicht wenige unter ihnen wie Jan Kubelik, Jaroslav Kocian, Wolfgang Schneiderhan, Sascha Culbertson, Vladimir Reznikow, Mary Hall und Michael Zacharewitsch, um nur einige Namen anzuführen, wurden Künstler von Weltruf und verbreiteten so den Ruhm ihres Lehrers.

Aber dem leidenschaftlichen Pädagogen genügte die unmittelbare Unterweisung seiner Schüler nicht, und er erweiterte seine Ausstrahlung insofern, als er seine Unterrichtsmethode in ungemein gründlicher und systematischer Weise niederlegte und damit auch der Nachwelt überlieferte. Das Gesamtwerk von op. 1 bis op. 26, entstanden in den Jahren 1881–1932/33, beinhaltet eine vollständige Analyse und Behandlung aller technischen Probleme des Violinspiels von den Anfängen bis zur höchsten Virtuosität.

Das große Gewicht, das Ševčik der Violintechnik beimaß, da er deren Beherrschung und höchste Vervollkommnung als Vorstufe und unabdingbare Voraussetzung der künstlerischen Entwicklung ansah, hat seinem Werk eine recht unterschiedliche und oft widersprüchliche Beurteilung eingetragen. Hielten es die einen für ein Nonplusultra und für das Vademekum des Geigers schlechthin, so empfanden es dagegen andere als bloße Mechanisierung oder Fingerdressur und erblickten darin die Gefahr, „durch technisches Raffinement der Bogen- und Griffbrettakrobatik zu glänzen und also auch Bogen- und Griffbrettmusik dem Publikum vorzuführen“ (Wasielewski). Aus heutiger Sicht erscheint es wohl

angemessen, sich dem Urteil des bedeutenden, etwas jüngeren Kollegen Ševčiks Carl Flesch (1873–1944) anzuschließen, der die „Studienwerke für die bedeutendsten und zeitsparendsten Hilfsmittel zur Erlangung einer modernen Geigentechnik unter der Voraussetzung, daß sie richtig angewandt werden“, hielt und sie einer Arznei gleichsetzte, „die je nach der Menge, in der sie genossen wird, tödlich oder heilend wirken kann.“ Aus dem Gesamtwerk Ševčiks haben sich seit ihrem Entstehen vor allem die folgenden Studien als Ausbildungsliteratur bewährt: op. 1 Schule der Violintechnik op. 2 Schule der Bogentechnik op. 3 40 variations faciles op. 7 Triller-Vorstudien op. 8 Lagenwechsel- und Tonleiter-Vorstudien op. 9 Doppelgriff-Vorstudien Die vorliegende Neuausgabe gerade dieser sechs Opera trägt zum einen der Bedeutung Rechnung, die Ševčiks Schulwerk auch in unserer Zeit hat, sie will jedoch zugleich durch gezielte Auswahl eine Konzentration auf das Wesentliche erreichen.

In vollem Umfange werden nur die 40 Variationen op. 3 (das nach meiner Meinung wichtigste Heft), die Lagenwechsel- und Tonleiter-­Vorstudien op. 8, wobei allerdings auf ein Ausschreiben der Sequenzfolgen über alle vier Saiten verzichtet wird, und die von mir nach Intervallzugehörigkeit neu geordneten Doppelgriff-­ Vorstudien op. 9 übernommen.

Aus den ursprünglich vier Heften der Violintechnik op. 1, den sechs Heften der Bogentechnik op. 2 und den zwei Heften Triller-­ Vorstudien op. 7 erscheint nur eine Auswahl der wichtigsten Teile.

Keine Berücksichtigung finden daher auch die von Ševčik in op. 1 hier und da eingefügten Tonleiter- und Dreiklangsübungen, die in anderen Schulwerken und speziellen Skalenstudien umfangreicher, konsequenter und systematischer behandelt werden.

Um das Studienmaterial zu aktualisieren, habe ich die ungeheuer große Zahl der Varianten von op. 2 einerseits auf ein heute notwendiges Maß reduziert und andererseits durch einige neue Übungen – Strichkombinationen und veränderte Rhythmen (kenntlich gemacht durch das Zeichen *) – ergänzt. Ich bin überzeugt, dass diese Praxis durchaus dem Werk Ševčiks gerecht wird, und möchte anregen, sie auch während der Arbeit mit der vorliegenden Ausgabe sinnvoll fortzuführen mit dem Ziel, den Übungsstoff bewusst der jeweiligen Veranlagung des Schülers anzupassen – so wie es Ševčik, der gerühmt wird, jeden Schüler individuell behandelt und gefördert zu haben, selbst getan hätte.

Preface The Czech violin teacher Otakar Ševčik was born on 22 March 1852 in Horaždovice. He was first taught music by his father, his earliest exercises being in singing and piano playing, but before long he had started the violin. He was 14 years of age when he went to the Prague Conservatory for systematic instruction from Anton Bennewitz (1833–1926). This came to an end four years later when Ševčik gave a performance of the Beethoven Concerto. Before he finally settled on his true calling and devoted himself to teaching, he gave proof of his skill as a violinist for some years as orchestral leader in Prague, Salzburg, and Vienna. In 1875 he took the decisive step and took a professorial post in the Conservatory in Kiev. Here he remained for 18 years. During this time he bad become a celebrated teacher and he was now offered further spheres in which to work: Prague, Písek, and Vienna, Prague yet again, and finally Písek. His activities in these places – interrupted by repeated sojourns in various large American cities as well as in London and Salzburg – continued with undiminished effectiveness until his death on 18 January 1934, when he was almost 82 years of age.

On the roll of his pupils there were well over 500 names. They came from many countries and not a few of them, like Jan Kubelik, Jaroslav Kocian, Wolfgang Schneiderhan, Sascha Culbertson, Vladimir Reznikow, Marie Hall and Michael Zacharewitsch – to mention but a selection of names – were artists of world repute who accordingly made the fame of their teacher more widely known.

But for the ardent teacher the immediate instruction of his pupils was not enough, and he broadened his influence by putting his method of teaching into an unusually fundamental and systematic form, thereby also serving posterity. The whole body of his work from op. 1 to op. 26 came out between 1881 and 1933, and it comprised a complete analysis and the way to deal with all technical problems in violin playing from what was required by the beginner to the needs of the most gifted virtuoso.

The great emphasis attached by Ševčik to violin technique – for he regarded its mastery and the highest perfection as the prelude and unalterable preparation for artistic development – attracted to his work quite various, and frequently unfavourable, criticisms. Some thought it a ne plus ultra, purely and simply a violinist’s vade mecum; but for others it was mere mechanical playing – finger training, and in it danger was sensed. So Wasielewski spoke of “brilliance through technical subtlety in respect of bow and finger-board acrobatics by which bow- and finger-board-music was produced for the public.” From today’s standpoint it seems fitting to accept the judgement of a significant, somewhat

younger, colleague of Ševčik – Carl Flesch (1873–1944). In his opinion “the studies are the most important and time-saving material by which a modern violin technique can be achieved, but always provided that they are correctly applied.” He compared them to medicine which, “according to the amount taken can either kill or cure.”

Out of the whole corpus of Ševčik’s works the following studies have been especially valuable since their first appearance: op. 1 School of Violin Technique op. 2 School of Bowing Technique op. 3 40 variations faciles op. 7 Preliminary Studies for the Trill op. 8 Changes of Position and Preliminary Scale Studies op. 9 Preliminary Studies in Double Stopping The present edition of these particular six works shows the significance of Ševčik’s educational undertakings also for our own day; through a purposeful selection, however, it concentrates on the essentials. Given complete are only the 40 Variations op. 3 – in my opinion the most important volume; the Changes of Position and Preliminary Scale Studies op. 8 – where, of course, transcribing sequential passages for all four strings is dispensed with; and the Preliminary Studies in Double Stopping op. 9, newly arranged by me according to interval.

From the original four volumes of the School of Violin Technique op. 1, the six volumes of Bowing Technique op. 2 and the two volumes of Studies for the Trill op. 7 there is only a selection of the most important sections. There is, therefore, no consideration given to what Ševčik has in op. 1 and in the additional scale and triad exercises, where such matters are dealt with in greater depth and more systematically in other tutors and special scale studies.

In order to make the material suitable for present requirements I have reduced the vast number of variants from op. 2 to what is necessary, while I have, on the other hand, extended it by means of new exercises (marked by *) in bowing combinations and altered rhythms. I am persuaded that this is the correct way to deal with Ševčik’s work throughout, and I might add that while working on the project it seemed sensible to continue the aim of making the practice material suit the individual student’s capacity. Ševčik was celebrated for his manner of dealing with, and encouraging, each particular pupil.
