Anmerkungen des Verlages Seit über 100 Jahren ist die 25-bändige Ausgabe der Klavierwerke von Johann Sebastian Bach unter Federführung von Ferruccio Busoni erhältlich. Inzwischen selbst zu einem historischen Dokument der Bach-Rezeption geworden, wird sie trotz ihres Alters immer noch gerne – auch international – genutzt.

In den Erläuterungen „Zur Edition“ von Dr. Reinhard Ermen ist die wechselvolle Geschichte der Entstehung der Edition in groben Zügen dargestellt. Als eine Folge dieser Entwicklung weisen die Bände unterschiedliche Sprachkombinationen auf, und so erreichten den Verlag immer wieder Anfragen nach fehlenden englischen Übersetzungen.

Aus Anlass des 100. Todestages von Busoni werden diese nun ergänzt. Anmerkungen und Übersetzungen, die nicht in den Notenseiten selbst zu finden sind, liegen den Heften als Einleger bei, sodass sie parallel zum Notentext genutzt werden können.

Die bisher ausschließlich auf Deutsch vorliegenden Texte außerhalb der Noten wurden ebenfalls übersetzt.

Publishing-House Remarks The 25-volume edition of the Johann Sebastian Bach piano works under the aegis of Ferruccio Busoni has been available for over 100 years. Though it has meantime become in itself an historical document of Bach reception, it is still used with pleasure – even internationally – despite its age.

In his notes “About the Edition,” Dr. Reinhard Ermen has briefly outlined its eventful genesis. As a result of this development, the volumes feature various language combinations, and requests for lacking English translations have repeatedly reached the publishing house.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Busoni’s death, these translations are now being added. Annotations and translations not to be found in the music pages themselves are provided as inserts for use in tandem with the music text. The accompanying texts previously available exclusively in German have also been translated.

Zur Edition Am 4. Oktober 1909 schreibt Breitkopf & Härtel an Ferruccio Busoni, um ihn für eine Ausgabe der Klavierwerke Johann ­Sebastian Bachs zu gewinnen. Die Idee, dafür gerade bei ihm anzufragen, lag auf der Hand: Kein anderer hatte sich zu dieser Zeit so intensiv mit Bach beschäftigt. Als Pianist und Bearbeiter, als Theoretiker und Pädagoge war Busoni wesentlich ­daran beteiligt, den Meister vom 19. ins 20. Jahrhundert zu holen, also aus der virtuosen Tradition, deren Höhepunkte er noch selbst gesetzt hatte, in eine Handhabe der geistigen, intellektuellen Herausforderung. Dafür und noch für vieles mehr war ­Busoni längst weltberühmt, außerdem war er seit Anfang der 1880er Jahre ein Komponist, der sich bald sehr eng an das Haus Breitkopf binden sollte, selbstredend auch als Bearbeiter und Herausgeber. In der umfangreichen Korrespondenz mit seinem Verlag, deren mehr als 1550 Briefe seit 2012 gedruckt vorliegen, ist das besagte Anschreiben des Geheimrats Oskar von Hase (damaliger Gesellschafter und Geschäftsführer), die Nummer 500. Basis des Projektes sollte die Bach-Gesamtausgabe sein, die zwischen 1851 und 1899 unter der Federführung der Bachgesellschaft erschienen war – natürlich bei Breitkopf & Härtel. Die Zeichen standen in jeder Weise günstig, hier das Jahrhundertwerk der ersten Gesamtausgabe, bzw. daraus das Konzentrat der Klavierwerke, dort der anerkannte Prophet und Exeget, der den originalen Text mit den Zeichen seiner Praxis beleben sollte.

Ferruccio Busoni (1866–1924), der sich dem ehrenden Auftrag nicht entziehen will, ist um 1909 ein vielgefragter Pianist. Er schreibt gerade an seiner Oper Die Brautwahl und entwickelt darüber hinaus einen wachsenden Ehrgeiz als schaffender Künstler.

Der Rastlose hat eine Familie, außerdem betätigt er sich als Veranstalter und Dirigent einer eigenen Reihe von Orchesterkonzerten mit den Berliner Philharmonikern, für Breitkopf & Härtel arbeitet er intensiv an der kritischen Gesamtausgabe der Werke von Franz Liszt mit. Ziemlich schnell beruft er mit Bruno Mugellini (1871–1912) und Egon Petri (1881–1962) zwei höchst unterschiedliche Mitarbeiter: Der eine, ein italienischer Erneuerer und Theoretiker des Klaviers, ist ein schneller Arbeiter, der lieber am Notentext selbst feilt, also an Tempoangaben, Bögen oder Fingersätzen, während ausführliche Kommentare eher selten zu finden sind. Der andere dagegen, der wichtigste Schüler Busonis und mit diesem seit vielen Jahren vertraut, bewegt sich ganz auf der Linie seines Lehrers. Er schreibt Vorworte und Fußnoten, und nicht nur Verzierungen werden angelegentlich diskutiert, sondern auch Textvarianten und kompositorische Details. Es geht schließlich um eine „instruktive“ Ausgabe, um ein praktisch fundiertes Lehrwerk. In einem Verlagsbrief vom Juli 1910 ist respektvoll-ironisch von einer „Bachhochschule“ die Rede. Ihre „Dozenten“, um im Bild zu bleiben, also die unterschiedlichen Zuträger, charakterisieren die besondere, durchaus abwechslungsreiche Darreichungsform dieser 25 Bände. Zeitgleich mit dem Klavierwerk versammelt Busoni, ebenfalls für Breitkopf, in sieben separaten Bänden seine anderen Bachversuche, und obwohl man diese viel weiter ausgearbeiteten Bearbeitungen und Transkriptionen bis hin zur monumentalen Fantasia Contrapuntistica vom kommentierenden, analysierenden Zugang der instruktiven Ausgabe deutlich trennen kann, sind für ihn selbst die Übergänge fließend. So hat er beispielsweise die Goldbergvariationen, die zwei Teile des Wohltemperierten Klaviers oder die Inventionen in bei-

den Ausgaben veröffentlicht. Möglicherweise denkt er zuallererst an Spielarten von Interpretation schlechthin, im Sinne einer ganz allgemein zu verstehenden Verlebendigung der Musik Bachs, die sich auf der einen Seite durch intensives Hineinhören in die klingenden Triebkräfte, auf der anderen Seite durch das Weiterdenken der gegebenen Angebote realisiert. In beiden Fällen spricht ein Kenner, der vor dem Publikum seine Erfahrungen ausbreitet.

Musikalische Erlebniszeit ist die Gegenwart, Ausblicke in die Zukunft sind nicht ausgeschlossen. Ein historistischer Aspekt, wie er heute fast schon selbstverständlich ist, liegt diesem wohlinformierten Interpreten fern.

Es hat relativ lange gedauert, bis die ersten Bände im Frühjahr 1916 erschienen. Im Januar 1912 starb unerwartet Bruno Mugellini in Bologna, immerhin hatte er bereits sechs Bände vorbereitet.

Die Hauptlast der Herausgabe ging immer mehr auf Egon Petri über, der mit 10 Bänden ein bedeutsames Pensum leistete, sein Vorwort zum sechsten Band, also den Französischen Suiten, ganz im Sinne Busonis geschrieben, darf in gewisser Weise als Credo zu dem gesamten Projekt gelten. Spiritus rector blieb aber bis zum Abschluss Busoni selbst, einmal abgesehen davon, dass in den neun von ihm verantworteten Bänden die entsprechenden Hauptwerke zu finden sind. Der 1. Weltkrieg erschwerte seit August 1914 die Arbeit. Solange Italien neutral blieb, war Busoni in Berlin eine respektierte Persönlichkeit, doch im Mai 1915 erklärte Italien Österreich-Ungarn den Krieg, im August 1916 auch dem Deutschen Reich. Busoni hatte Anfang 1915 freilich eine umfängliche Amerikatournee begonnen, mit dem Gedanken, das Ende des Krieges in der Neuen Welt abzuwarten. Das erwies sich als Illusion, weshalb er sich im Herbst 1915 ins neutrale Zürich zurückzog. Im säbelrasselnden Kaiserreich war er inzwischen eine partiell umstrittene Figur. Dass Breitkopf trotzdem zu ihm stand, spricht für die nach wie vor leuchtende Bachkompetenz, die mit seinem Namen verbunden war, aber auch für Liberalität und Weitsicht des Verlags. Die Korrespondenz Leipzig – New York – Zürich, der Informationsfluss, der ständige Austausch von Korrekturen war gelegentlich mühsam, und schließlich kam es noch zu einer deutlichen Trübung des freundschaftlichen Verhältnisses zu Egon Petri. Häufig fand ein Austausch zwischen Busoni und Petri nur über den Umweg des Lektorats bei Breitkopf & Härtel statt. Und als wäre das noch nicht genug, mussten die Rechte an Busonis Ausgabe des Wohltemperierten Klaviers (Teil 1) beim Verlag Schirmer in New York, wo diese Fassung 1894 erstmals herausgekommen war, umständlich erworben werden. Der Fall erwies sich in Kriegszeiten als so kompliziert, dass bis kurz vor Toresschluss Mugellinis Version, die bereits 1908/09 bei Breitkopf erschienen war und heute noch parallel lieferbar ist, als Band 1 disponiert wurde. Im Juli 1918 schickte Busoni die Stichvorlage für den letzten von ihm bearbeiteten Band 16 an den Verlag, die abschließenden Bände 10 und 25 von Petri erschienen jedoch erst im Mai 1923. Bedenkt man, dass die Inventionen, Busonis erfolgreichste instruktive Ausgabe, erstmals 1891 erschienen, so spiegeln sich in diesem Editionsprojekt mehr als 30 Jahre einer anspruchsvollen Bachrezeption, deren Grundzüge durch ihre reflektierte Evidenz heute noch vorbildlich erscheinen.

Ferruccio Busoni on 22 December 1915 about the edition of Johann Sebastian Bach’s piano works.

About the Edition On 4 Oc­tober 1909 Breitkopf & Härtel wrote to Ferruccio ­Busoni, hoping to gain his support for an edition of Johann ­Sebastian Bach’s piano works. Addressing him, in particular, was an obvious idea, as no one else had dealt at that time so intensively with Bach. As pianist and arranger, as theoretician and pedagogue, Busoni had been crucially involved in summoning the master from the 19th into the 20th century, out of the ­virtuoso tradition, whose apogees Busoni himself had set, into a means of handling the spiritual, intellectual challenge. For this and for much more, Busoni had long been world-famous; from the start of the 1880s, moreover, he had been a composer who was soon to be very closely tied to the Breitkopf house, also, of course, as arranger and editor. In the extensive correspondence with his publishing house, whose more than 1550 letters have been published since 2012, the letter in question from the privy councilor Oskar von Hase (then associate and managing director) is number 500. The project was to be based on the Bach Complete Edition, published between 1851 and 1899 under the auspices of the Bach Society – naturally, by Breitkopf & Härtel.

The signs were in every way favorable: here, the centenary work of the first complete edition, with its focus, in this case, on its ­piano works; there, the recognized prophet and exegete, who was to enliven the original text with the tokens of his praxis.

Ferruccio Busoni (1866–1924), who does not want to shirk the honorific commission, is a much sought-after pianist by 1909.

He is currently composing his opera Die Brautwahl and developing, furthermore, a growing ambition as a creative artist. Indefatigable, he has a family, besides being active as organizer and conductor of his own series of orchestral concerts with the Berlin Phil­harmonic and working intensively for Breitkopf & Härtel on the critical complete edition of the works of Franz Liszt.

He rather quickly appoints two profoundly different assistants, Bruno Mugellini (1871–1912) and Egon Petri (1881–1962): The one, an Italian innovator and theoretician of the piano, is a fast worker, who prefers to work explicitly on the music text itself, thus, on tempo markings, slurs, or fingerings, whereas detailed annotations are rather rarely to be found. The other, by contrast, the most important of Busoni’s piano students and one with whom he has been familiar for many years, completely follows his teacher’s line. He writes prefaces and footnotes, extensively discussing not only ornamentation, but also text variants and compositional details. This is, after all, an “instructive” edition, a sound practical textbook. In a publishing-house letter of July 1910 there is a respectful if ironic mention of a “Bach college.”

Its “lecturers,” thus, the different contributors, characterize the special, indeed varied presentation of these 25 volumes. Concurrently with the piano work, Busoni also assembles his other Bach efforts in seven separate volumes, likewise for Breitkopf.

Although these much more elaborate arrangements and transcriptions, right up to the monumental Fantasia Contrapuntistica, can be clearly separated from the commenting, analyzing approach of the instructive edition, the transitions are fluent for him. He publishes, for example, the Goldberg Variations, the two parts of the Well-Tempered Clavier or the Inventions in both editions. He may possibly think first and foremost of the varieties

of interpretation par excellence, in the sense of a general, fully comprehensible enlivening of Bach’s music, realized, on the one hand, by intensive listening to the sounding driving forces, on the other hand, by conceptually extending the given. In both cases an authority is speaking, sharing his experiences with the public. The time of musical experience is the present, and outlooks into the future are not impossible. An historical aspect, as is already almost taken for granted today, is far from this extremely well-informed interpreter.

It was a relatively long time before the first volumes appeared in the spring of 1916. Bruno Mugellini died unexpectedly in ­Bologna in January 1912, after having already prepared six volumes. The main burden of the edition was increasingly passed on to Egon Petri, who, with 10 volumes, accomplished a significant task; his preface to the sixth volume, that is, the French Suites, written entirely in the spirit of Busoni, may certainly be regarded in some ways as the credo for the entire project.

But Busoni himself remained the guiding spirit until the end, apart from the fact that the relevant main works can be found in the nine volumes for which he was responsible. World War I had made work difficult since August 1914. As long as Italy remained neutral, Busoni was a respected figure in Berlin, but in May 1915, Italy declared war on Austria-Hungary, and in August 1916 also on the German Reich. At the beginning of 1915, Busoni had indeed started an extensive tour of America with the idea of waiting out the war in the New World. This turned out to be an illusion, which is why he retired to neutral Zurich in autumn 1915. In the saber-rattling empire he was now a partially controversial figure. That Breitkopf, despite all, stood by him, speaks for the still shining Bach competence that was associated with his name, but also for the liberality and foresight of the publishing house. The Leipzig – New York – Zurich correspondence, the flow of information, the constant exchange of corrections was sometimes arduous, and eventually the formerly friendly relationship with Egon Petri clearly became clouded. Frequently, the exchange between Busoni and Petri took place only via the editorial department of Breitkopf & Härtel. And as if that were not enough, the rights to Busoni’s edition of the Well-Tempered Clavier (part 1) had to be laboriously acquired from the Schirmer publishing house in New York, where this version was first published in 1894. The case turned out to be so complicated in times of war that Mugellini’s version, which had already been published by Breitkopf in 1908/09 and is concurrently still ­available today, was scheduled as volume 1 up to shortly before the eleventh hour. In July 1918, Busoni sent the engraver’s model for volume 16, his last volume, to the publisher, yet the final ­volumes 10 and 25 by Petri appeared only in May 1923. Considering that the Inventions, Busoni’s most successful instructive edition, first appeared in 1891, this edition project thus mirrors more than 30 years of a sophisticated Bach reception, the basic features of which still appear exemplary today, thanks to their reflective evidence.

Vorwort Nachdem der Schüler den Text (Noten, Fingersatz, Mechanik) in seinen sicheren Besitz gebracht, richte er seine zweite Aufmerksamkeit auf den seelischen Gehalt und schreite weiterhin zur Freiheit des Vortrages. Dem Fortgeschrittenen wird das Erkennen des Gehaltes jedoch zur ersten1) Aufgabe, die eine diesem Erkennen angepaßte Entzifferung und Zurechtlegung des Textes als Folge hat. Denn Bach ist groß als Erzieher des Gemütes. In seinen Werken spiegelt sich das Innenleben ihres Schöpfers ab, wenn auch – wie es der Spiegelung Gesetz ist – in verdoppeltem Abstande, weggerückter Distanz.

Man vermeide demnach ebenso die Verschleppung wie die Überhastung, die Nervosität wie die Gemächlichkeit, die allesamt dem Monumentalen entgegenwirken, und bemühe sich zugleich, lebendig zu gestalten. Wenn das Monumentale auch nicht immer in den Klavierwerken Bachs zum Ausdruck kommt, so sind wir dennoch sittlich angehalten, es – dem Wesen des Meisters entsprechend – überall nach Möglichkeit zu

betonen. In den 18 kleinen Präludien habe ich durch einige eingeklammerte (oder kleingestochene) Zusätze den Schüler auf die Struktur und den Sinn hinzuweisen versucht: sie bedeuten ebensowenig ein Verbessernwollen des Textes, als wie z. B. die hinzugefügten doppelten Taktstriche. Ich erachte diese Form der Erläuterung für anschaulicher, als jene ausgiebigen „Fußnoten“, die ich selber früher reichlich angewandt.

Besonders galt es mir, die „thematische Idee“ darzustellen, die das Gerüst Bachscher Konstruktion bedeutet. Womit meine kleine Lehrarbeit ebenso sehr um das Kompositorische als um das Klavierspielerische sich bemüht.

Preface After having fully mastered the text, (notes, fingering, technical difficulties) the student should, as his second task, turn his attention to the spiritual contents of the music, thence proceeding to freedom of interpretation. The advanced player will, however, make this realisation of the inner meaning his first1) duty, and will decipher and interpret the text according to the realisation which he has obtained. For Bach is a great educator of the soul.

In his works, one may see, reflected, the inward life of their creator; at a distance, it is true, according to the law of reflection.

Dragging should therefore be avoided as carefully as undue haste, flurry no less than slowless – all of which moods are inconsistent with the Monumental, – and the student should endeavour to give vitality to his renderings. And even if this monumental character is not always appearent in Bach’s Pianoforte works, our artistic moral conscience should, none the less, oblige us to emphasize it, wherever possible, as being characteristic of the Master’s nature. In the 18 small Preludes I have tried

to draw the attention of the student to the structure and meaning, by various additions in brackets, (or in small type). They are not to be regarded as would-be corrections of the text, anymore than, for example, the double bar-lines which I have added. I consider this form of explanation clearer than a profusion of the footnotes, which I formerly employed so largely. lt was my especial endeavour to indicate the “thematic idea”, which forms, as it were, the frame-work of Bach’s construction – whereby it may be seen that my little didactic work deals as much with the compositions themselves, as with their pianistic interpretations.

Introduzione Dopo avere bene studiato il testo (le note, la diteggiatura, la meccanica), l’allievo dovrà portare la sua seconda attenzione al contenuto psichico e poi procedere alla libertà dell’ interpretazione. Per uno scolaro provetto, però, la cognizione del contenuto sarà primo 1) compito, da cui un’ interpretazione ed un trattamento del testo, corrispondenti a quella cognizione, risulterà come conseguenza, essendo il Bach grande come educatore dell’ anima. Nelle sue opere si riflette la vita interna del loro creatore, sebbene – secondo la legge delle riflessione – in distanza raddoppiata, in aumentati intervalli.

Quindi si evitino i soverchi ritardi come le precipitazioni, la nervosità come l‘agiatezza, tutte cose contrarie al Monumentale, e si lavori sempre per una viva plasticità. Se anche non sempre il monumentale appare nelle opere per piano del Bach, però noi siamo moralmente obbligati, secondo il carattere del Grande, d’accentuarlo sempre quanto è possibile. Avant-propos Lorsque I’élève se sera rendu maître du texte musical (notes, doigté et mécanisme), il prêtera toute son attention au contenu, puis s’efforcera d’acquérir la liberté dans l’interprétation. Le pianiste déjà plus avancé par contre considérera comme premier 1) devoir l’etude du contenu qui a pour corollaire l’etude du déchiffrage et celle du texte. Car Bach est un grand éducateur d’âme.

On s’abstiendra donc de tout rallentissement comme de toute accélération, de toute nervosité comme de tout laisser-aller, tous facteurs contraires au caractère monumental qui doit dominer; on s’attachera surtout à rester vivant. Et quand même le côté monumental ne serait pas apparant dans toutes les œuvres pour piano de Bach, nous sommes moralement tenus de l’accentuer autant que possible, étant donné le caractère du maître.

Dans les 18 Petits Préludes, j’ai essayé d’indiquer à élève la structure et le sens musical par des adjonctions entre paran-

thèses (ou gravées en petites notes); ces adjonctions ne constituent nullement des tentatives de correction du texte, pas plus que les doubles barres de mesure que j’ai ajoutées. Mais j’estime cette sorte de démonstration plus claire pour l’élève que les petites notes en pied dont je faisais naguère si grand usage.

Je m’attachai surtout à faire ressortir «l’idée thématique», qui est comme l’armature de la construction de Bach; c’est ainsi que mon modeste ouvrage pédagogique se préoccupe autant de la composition que du cotè pianistique de ces œuvres.
