Vorwort Auf der Suche nach Quellen für die Weiterführung der Leipziger Ausgabe der Werke von Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy an der Sächsischen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Leipzig wurde der Herausgeber in St. Petersburg auf ein weithin unbekanntes Werk aufmerksam: den vorliegenden Festgesang MWV E 2. Die Komposition entstand auf Bestellung von Anton Christanell (1801–1882) aus Schwaz, einem kleinen Städtchen in Tirol. Mendelssohn kannte den Auftraggeber nicht persönlich, sondern hatte von ihm lediglich seit April 1837 mehrmals Briefe erhalten. In einem der Schreiben stellte Christanell sich als „kunstliebender Musikdilettant“, in einem anderen als „Handelsmann und Güterbesitzer“ vor. Er übte in Schwaz verschiedene Ämter aus, war zu unterschiedlichen Zeiten Marktvorstand (d. h. Bürgermeister), Magistratsrat, Kommandant der Nationalgarde und Spitalverwalter und organisierte aus Liebhaberei musikalische Veranstaltungen. Am 7. März 1838 bat er Mendelssohn um die Vertonung eines Textes, den er anlässlich des Geburtstages von Kaiser Ferdinand I. bereits wenige Wochen später, am 19. April, in Schwaz zugunsten der Armen des Ortes singen lassen wollte. Christanell wünschte sich ein Chorwerk, das auf einem neu erworbenen Flügel begleitet werden sollte. Dazu gab er dem Komponisten folgenden Text an: „Möge das Siegeszeichen des lebendigmachenden Kreuzes Dich und Deine hohe Nachkommenschaft gegen sichtbare und unsichtbare Feinde für und für begleiten. Amen.“ Über den Text teilte Christanell mit, es seien Worte, „welche auf einer Reise zu einem hohen Haupte bei Ueberreichung eines Stückchen [sic] des h: Kreuzes Christi gesprochen worden sind“.

Die Worte werden dem Oberhaupt der armenischen Kirche, Patriarch Johannes VIII. von Karbi in Etschmiadsin, zugeschrieben, der sie zur Begrüßung des russischen Zaren Nikolaus I. bei einem Besuch in Armenien gesprochen haben soll.1 In dem Brief an Christanell, den Mendelssohn seiner Partitur beifügte, äußerte er, es sei ihm nicht ganz leicht gefallen, „grade diese Worte in Musik zu setzen, und allerdings habe ich eine kleine Abänderung machen müssen, weil die ‚hohe Nachkommenschaft’ mir gar nicht passen wollte; indessen wollte ich mich Ihnen gern gefällig beweisen, und wie Sie sagen zu dem Fest in Tyrols Bergen mein Scherflein beitragen, also nehmen Sie es hin, wie es geworden ist.“ Auch aus einem Brief Mendelssohns an seine Mutter geht hervor, dass er den Text etwas sonderbar fand. So ersetzte er „Dich und Deine hohe Nachkommenschaft“ durch den allgemeineren Ausdruck „Dich und die Deinen“, und er fand für die Aufgabe eine musikalische Lösung, die er in diesem Brief als gelungen einschätzte: „... und so toll die Worte waren, so ists wahrhaftig zu meinem eignen Erstaunen ein ganz netter Chor daraus geworden.“ Mendelssohn führte den Auftrag in kürzester Zeit aus. Er unterbrach dazu sogar die eilige Arbeit an seinem Werk Serenade und Allegro giojoso op. 43 MWV O 12 für Klavier und Orchester und beendete am 30. März die Chorkomposition, die er möglicherweise an diesem einen Tag komponiert hatte. Die festliche Uraufführung fand wohl, wie vorgesehen, am 19. April 1838 in Schwaz statt. Auch in den Folgejahren dürfte das Stück mehrfach zugunsten der Armen in Schwaz erklungen sein, wie Christanell bereits am 11. April 1838 in seinem Dankschreiben an Mendelssohn ankündigte.

Das musikalische Material des Werkes weist überraschende Beziehungen zur Sinfonie-Kantate Lobgesang op. 52 MWV A 18 auf, die Mendelssohn erst mehr als zwei Jahre später vollendete, an der er

aber offenbar schon 1838 zu arbeiten begann. Das Thema des ersten Chorabschnittes im Festgesang ist fast identisch mit dem markanten Themenbeginn der Einleitung („Sinfonie“) im Lobgesang, die später auch vom Chor mit den Worten aufgegriffen wird: „Alles, was Odem hat, lobe den Herrn“.

Zur Ausführung der Musik gab Mendelssohn Christanell einige Hinweise, die auch den Benutzern der vorliegenden Ausgabe zur Beachtung empfohlen werden: „Die Bezeichnungen nach Maelzls Metronom sind genau. Je stärker Sie den Chor besetzen können und je schöner das Crescendo im Anfang hervorheben lassen, desto besser.“ Das Autograph befindet sich heute in der Handschriftenabteilung der Russischen Nationalbibliothek (vormals Öffentliche SaltykowSchtschedrin-Bibliothek) in St. Petersburg. Es besteht aus zwölf sauber geschriebenen Seiten: einem Titelblatt und elf Notenseiten. Zahlreiche Änderungen im Notentext sprechen dafür, dass es sich um die erste Niederschrift handelt. Die Chorpartien sind darin in den heute üblichen Schlüsseln notiert. Bei der Herausgabe wurde lediglich im Tenor zur Präzisierung die Zahl 8 unter dem Schlüssel ergänzt. Der Notenstich folgt auch ansonsten den modernen Gepflogenheiten. Im Klavierpart wurden tiefe Noten der rechten Hand, die Mendelssohn im unteren System notiert hat, in das obere System umgelegt. Bei Doppelklängen und Akkorden auf punktierten Achtelnotenwerten wurden die von Mendelssohn häufig unvollständig notierten Augmentationspunkte komplettiert.

Aufführungsmaterialien aus Schwaz – insbesondere die von Christanell herausgeschriebenen Chorstimmen – konnten bislang nicht aufgefunden werden. Da sich auch in Mendelssohns Nachlass weder eine weitere Reinschrift noch ein Entwurf befindet, ist das Autograph die einzige überlieferte Quelle.

Dass dieser Festgesang bis heute nicht bekannt war, ist wohl überwiegend in Zusammenhang damit zu sehen, dass Mendelssohn dem Auftraggeber schrieb: „Ich rechne aber sicher darauf, daß Sie das Stück nur als Ihr Privateigentum betrachten und in keinem Falle anders als durch Aufführungen öffentlich bekannt machen, nicht durch den Druck. Die Erfüllung dieser Bedingung ist mir wichtig, und ich bin überzeugt, daß ich Ihnen darin vertrauen darf.“ Christanell versicherte in seinem Dankschreiben, Mendelssohn könne sich auf ihn verlassen, und er hat sich daran – bis hin zu einem entsprechenden Passus in seinem Testament – offenbar so gewissenhaft gehalten, dass kaum jemand außerhalb von Schwaz von der Existenz des Werkes wusste. Wenn es hier dennoch gedruckt wird, geschieht dies, weil wir Nachgeborenen uns an den damaligen Willen des Komponisten nicht gebunden fühlen, sondern in dem Festgesang ein Kulturgut erblicken, das sich inzwischen aus den Bedingungen seiner Entstehung gelöst hat.

Die Ausgabe erscheint mit der Gewissheit, dass das reizvolle Werk der Vergessenheit entrissen zu werden verdient und unsere Kenntnis vom Schaffen Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdys abrunden hilft.

Preface While pursuing leads concerning sources for the ongoing Leipzig Edition of the Works of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy at the Sächsische Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Leipzig, the editor took notice of a practically unknown work by Mendelssohn in St. Petersburg: the Festgesang MWV E 2. The composition was commissioned by Anton Christanell (1801–1882) of Schwaz, a little town in Tyrol. Mendelssohn did not know his client personally, but had only received several letters from him since April 1837. In one of the letters, Christanell introduced himself as an “art-loving musical dilettante”; in another, as a “merchant and estate owner”.

He fulfilled various functions in Schwaz, being, at various times, market manager (i. e. mayor), municipal councillor, commander of the National Guard and hospital manager. He also organized musical events at an amateur basis. On 7 March 1838 he asked Mendelssohn to set to music a text which he planned to have sung in Schwaz only a few weeks later, on 19 April, for the birthday of Emperor Ferdinand I. The proceeds were to benefit the town’s poor. Christanell wanted a choral work which should be accompanied on a new acquisition, a grand piano. He supplied Mendelssohn with the following text: “Möge das Siegeszeichen des lebendigmachenden Kreuzes Dich und Deine hohe Nachkommenschaft gegen sichtbare und unsichtbare Feinde für und für begleiten. Amen.” (May the symbol of victory of the lifegiving cross protect you and your great progeny against enemies visible and invisible for ever and always. Amen.)

Referring to the text, Christanell told the composer that these words “had been spoken on a journey to a high-ranking personage on the Occasion of the presentation of a little piece of the Holy Cross of Christ”. The words are attributed to the leader of the Armenian church, Patriarch John VIII of Karbi in Etchmiadsin, who is said to have uttered them upon welcoming Russia’s Czar Nicholas I on his visit to Armenia.1 In the letter to Christanell that Mendelssohn sent along with the completed score, he confessed that he had found it rather difficult “to set precisely these words to music; at all events, I had to make a slight change, since I simply could not fit in the ‘great progeny’.

However, I did want to oblige you and, as you mentioned, make my little contribution to the feast in Tyrol’s mountains. Thus please accept the work for what it is.” Also from a letter by Mendelssohn written to his mother, we know that the composer found the text rather strange. He thus replaced “you and your great progeny” with the more general expression “you and your kin” (die Deinen), and he found a musical solution to the task which he deemed successful. In the aforementioned letter he wrote: “... and however peculiar the words were, it turned out to my own amazement to be a truly fine Chorus.”

Mendelssohn carried out his commission at full speed in late March. He even interrupted his work on the Serenade und Allegro giojoso op. 43 MWV O 12 for piano and orchestra and completed the choral piece on 30 March. It is quite possible that he even wrote the piece on that one day. The work was probably given its festive first performance in Schwaz on 19 April 1838, as planned.

It was no doubt performed a number of times in Schwaz for the town’s poor in the following years as well, since Christanell already announced this intention in his letter of thanks dated 11 April 1838.

There are some surprising connections between the music of the Festgesang and the symphony-cantata Lobgesang op. 52 MWV A 18.

Though Mendelssohn only completed the Lobgesang two years later, he had apparently been working on it since 1838. The theme of the first choral section in the Festgesang is almost identical to the striking beginning of the introductory theme (“Sinfonie”) in the Lobgesang, which is later taken up by the Chorus at the words: “Alles, was Odem hat, lobe den Herrn” (Everything that breathes, praise the Lord).

Concerning the performance of the work, Mendelssohn gave Christanell a few suggestions which we also recommend to the users of the present edition: “The indications according to Maelzl’s metronome are precise. It will be to the work’s advantage to have as many voices as possible in the Chorus and to bring out the crescendo elegantly at the beginning.”

The autograph is located today in the manuscript division of the Russian National Library (formerly the Saltykov-Shtshedrin Public Library) in St. Petersburg. It consists of twelve neatly written pages: a title page and 11 pages of music. The many changes made in the music suggest that this is the first draft. The choral parts are notated in the clefs normally used today. In this edition, we have merely added a cautionary “8” below the clef at the tenor part.

The work was otherwise engraved following modern editorial practice. In the piano part, the low notes of the right hand, which Mendelssohn notated in the lower staff, were transferred to the upper staff. At double sounds and chords on dotted eighth-note values, we have filled in the augmentation dots which Mendelssohn often left incomplete.

There are no known performance parts from Schwaz, in particular the choral parts which Christanell wrote out. Since there is neither a further fair copy nor a sketch in Mendelssohn’s estate, the autograph is the only surviving source.

The fact that the Festgesang was widely unknown to this day should no doubt be seen chiefly in connection with what Mendelssohn wrote to his client: “I am confident that you will consider the piece as your exclusive property and will make it public in no other way than through performance – not through printing. The fulfillment of this condition means a great deal to me, and I am convinced that I can rely on you.” In his letter of acknowledgement, Christanell assured Mendelssohn that he was able to rely on him, and the Tyrolean apparently took the request so seriously – even going so far as to making a respective clause in his will – that hardly anyone outside of Schwaz knew anything about the work. If we are printing this work today, then because we of the 20th century no longer feel bound to the composer’s will. We see in the Festgesang a cultural asset which has since freed itself from the contingencies of its origins. We are printing it with the firm conviction that this charming work, which enriches and helps round out our knowledge of Mendelssohn’s Oeuvre, deserves to be rescued from oblivion.
