Brave. 2026/27

The Official Guide to the Bregenzerwald.

bra|ve The French Nobel Prize-winning author André Gide once said: ‘You cannot discover new continents without the courage to lose sight of the shore.’ Admittedly, the chances of discovering new continents these days are rather slim — and you certainly won’t find any coastlines around here, either. Yet the essence of this quote captures the spirit of the Bregenzerwald in Vorarlberg, Austria’s westernmost federal state, perfectly. The region’s diversity is shaped by locals who dare to forge new paths, refusing to settle for ‘that’s the way it’s always been done’. Much of what there is to experience and discover in the Bregenzerwald can be found within the pages of this Guide. This is, naturally, merely the beginning. And while not every recommendation requires a test of courage, curiosity and an open mind are undoubtedly your best companions when seeking out memorable experiences.

Dear Readers, as we all know: every journey eventually comes to an end. And now, for us too, a remarkable journey is drawing to a close. In 2009/10, the first Bregenzerwald Travel Magazine was published alongside our trusted Travel Guide. Now, with the summer 2026 edition, this chapter concludes with pride — spanning 34 issues. Over the years, the Travel Magazine has been deeply appreciated: by our guests, the people of the Bregenzerwald, our business partners, and by ourselves. Yet, after 17 years, we felt it was time to turn the page and explore something new. The world is evolving, and so are we. Sometimes, progress means saying goodbye to something familiar. Not because it has lost its charm, but because it is time for fresh inspiration. This evolution applies just as much to our visual identity as it does to the stories we tell. So, what comes next? We’ve asked ourselves this very question over the past few months. You are now holding the answer in your hands: The Official Guide to the Bregenzerwald. From now on, each issue will focus on a specific theme. We open with ‘Brave’ — after all, taking that first step towards something new requires being brave. As always, our mission remains unchanged: to provide reliable information, insights, and tips for guests and locals alike. But this Guide is far more than just a collection of useful recommendations. It is designed to open up new perspectives, reveal the unique facets of our region, and invite you to discover the Bregenzer wald from fresh, ever-changing angles.

Published twice a year — for the winter and summer seasons — the new Guide is here to accompany, inspire, and point the way: before your journey, during your stay, and perhaps even back home. Dear Readers, we hope you enjoy this new format. May it inspire you to experience the Bregenzerwald with open eyes, boundless curiosity, and perhaps — just a touch of courage.

Of Courage and Recklessness Understanding the Bregenzerwald

What exactly is courage? And how fine is the line between courage and recklessness? And what does all this have to do with the Bregenzerwald? If you look up the word ‘courage’ in the dictionary, you will find a fairly simple definition: it is about overcoming your fear in a dangerous or risky situation. Taking this definition a little further, courage is always required when it comes to pushing boundaries. Or forging new paths. Simply doing things you have never done before — things where you are not entirely sure whether they will turn out well or not; whether they will end in success or a setback.

8

Decades ago, the people of the Bregenzerwald were repeatedly forced to forge new paths — not least because of the prevailing topography. The scarce land in the valley was simply not enough to farm profitably and feed the population. Consequently, migration shaped the Bregenzerwald from an early stage: in the form of internal agricultural migration to Vorsäße (lower alpine pastures) and high pastures, but also in the form of seasonal and migrant labour. However, breaking new ground should not be understood in purely geographical terms. The challenging conditions also led the locals to develop a certain inventive, tinkering spirit. This remains true Understanding the Bregenzerwald

‘We honour the old and welcome the new, to ourselves and our homeland we remain true.’ today — and it also requires a good dose of courage. In this context, one could easily speak of innovative thinking and action. The four individuals introduced on pages 16 to 20 prove that this spirit is alive and well in the Bregenzerwald. This spirit of innovation is particularly evident — even to outsiders — in the region’s craftsmanship and architecture, both of which have made the region famous far beyond its borders. In 2000, for example, the renowned Wallpaper magazine wrote: ‘Having scoured the globe, we were unanimous in our decision to name Vorarlberg as the most progressive part of the planet when it comes to new architecture.’ Admittedly, this quote refers to Vorarlberg as a whole and not specifically to the Bregenzerwald. However, it is hardly a bold claim to say that the Bregenzerwald Understanding the Bregenzerwald

is a driving force within Vorarlberg when it comes to architecture and craftsmanship. Incidentally, this courage to embrace the new is not an end in itself. In other words, it is not about doing something new just for the sake of it. On the contrary: the locals are immensely proud of their traditions and actively cultivate them. Anyone who has ever looked more closely at the Bregenzerwald and the ‘Wälder’ (as the locals are known) may well have come across a quote from a poem by Gebhard Wölfle: ‘Meor ehrod das Ault, meor grüoßod das Nü und blibod üs sealb und dor Hoamad trü’ (‘We honour the old and welcome the new, to ourselves and our homeland we remain true’). Wölfle lived from 1848 to 1904 and wrote the poem to mark the opening of the Bregenzerwald Railway in 1902. To this day, these lines are quoted frequently — some might even

9

say too frequently. Yet this clearly demonstrates just how deeply rooted navigating the tension between tradition and modernity is in the region. On the other hand, it is incredibly rare for the people of the Bregenzerwald to let success breed arrogance. They are widely regarded as exceptionally down-to-earth, and this is not merely self-flattery. Armin Thurnher, the long-standing publisher and editor-in-chief of the Viennese weekly newspaper Falter, wrote the following about a sort of prototype of the commercially successful ‘Wälder’: ‘His company is technically ahead of the curve. With a twinkle in his eye, he tries not to make a fuss about himself or his success, all while taking the global market by storm.’ Thus, courage — when crowned with success — usually goes hand in hand with a healthy dose of humility. This brings us to the question of recklessness, which is generally understood as a

10

form of overestimating one’s own abilities. And of course there are areas where the Bregenzerwald deliberately sets different priorities. Take tourism, for example: there are undoubtedly regions with higher mountains, more kilometres of piste or more spectacular attractions. Trying to emulate them would be an act of recklessness that could easily backfire. Yet there is one thing that protects the Bregenzerwald and its residents from excessive recklessness: they are acutely aware of what they have and what they are capable of. They are proud of this. And they have absolutely no desire to be anything else.

Courage Driven by Passion

There are always people who consciously forge new paths — even if these bring a certain level of uncertainty. Naturally, this usually involves a degree of risk, and such paths are often accompanied by sceptical voices. For this reason alone, one can safely call these people brave. Taking a closer look at their careers, however, it is often not courage that comes first for them. It is things like passion, enthusiasm, and conviction that truly underpin such decisions and career paths. 16

Courage Driven by Passion

Delight

The w hole s tor y

Sarah Ranak ‘When you can’t stop thinking about it, don’t stop working on it,’ is one of her guiding mottos. By the age of 37, she has already founded three businesses, including Badhus — a charming café and zero-waste shop located right on the village square in Lingenau. Naturally, this unconventional concept faced some critical voices at the start, but five years on, it can be called a great success story. Was founding it a particularly courageous step? ‘I was so gripped by passion that I didn’t really overthink whether I dared to do it or not.’

Courage Driven by Passion

17

Architecture The w hole s tor y

Nina Beck Even before starting her architecture degree, Nina Beck frequently took photos of old houses. After graduating, she realised: ‘It is precisely these old buildings that receive far too little attention.’ She decided to focus more intensely on ‘building within existing structures’ — meaning renovation and adaptation. She has been self-employed since 2023, specialising in exactly this. Architecturally, it brings exciting challenges: ‘We don’t plan from scratch. We walk through the houses with people, trying to understand a building’s true character. We adapt it where necessary and preserve the old where it makes sense.’ Nina is firmly convinced: ‘From an ecological perspective too, this is the path we must take in the future.’

Delicacy

Kanisfluh

The w hole s tor y

Johannes Fink Johannes Fink makes something of a rarity in the Bregenzerwald: soft cheese. The emphasis here is on ‘soft’, as the region is certainly well known for its hard cheese. ‘It never hurts to bring in a breath of fresh air,’ says Johannes. At the Weichkäserei Schnepfau (Schnepfau soft dairy), which belongs to Alpenkäse Bregenzerwald, he has been passionately producing blue cheese, white mould cheese, and washed-rind cheese since 2025. ‘If a carpenter saws a plank too short, he knows immediately where the mistake lies. In my job, even minor changes can have a huge impact, without me knowing exactly why straight away. That is why it remains a game of trial and error. It can sometimes drive you to despair, but it is incredibly exciting.’

19

Sport The w hole s tor y

Christian ‘Gigi’ Rüf When Gigi Rüf took up snowboarding in the 1990s, the idea of being a ‘pro snowboarder’ didn’t really exist over here. ‘People simply didn’t take snowboarding seriously as a sport.’ Nevertheless, he became one of the first Austrians to gain an international foothold as a professional. The Au native evolved into one of the world’s most sought-after riders for freeride videos, proving he belongs at the very top with two X-Games medals and multiple Freeride World Tour victories. However, as the sport shifted increasingly towards freestyle — meaning tricks and jumps in snowparks — he launched his own snowboard company, Slash, in 2012. ‘Back then, there simply weren’t any boards that met my specific demands as a freerider.’ Today, Slash is a family-run business, and Gigi still travels the world as a pro rider — competing in events like the Natural Selection Tour.

Skiing & Snowboarding

High Five! 283 Walserschuss

Sunnegg Steilhang

Warth-Schröcken The word ‘Schuss’ in its name is a strong hint of what to expect. Although it ‘only’ boasts a 60 % gradient, it remains a formidable challenge.

Damüls-Mellau With a gradient of up to 73 %, this is hardly a family piste. For experienced skiers, though, it is great fun!

‘Stuomindle’ Diedamskopf Piste No. 1 on the ski map is 1,570 metres long, with a gradient of roughly 80 % at its steepest point. For comparison: the legendary ‘Mausefalle’ on the Streif reaches about 85 %.

35°

Suttis Steilhang Damüls-Mellau Over roughly one kilometre, you drop around 250 metres in altitude — straight down. Gradients reach up to 70 % in places. Good to know:

100 %

45°

A gradient of 100% is exactly equal to 45 degrees, because you gain 100 metres of elevation for every 100 metres of horizontal distance.

Skiing & Snowboarding

Ochsakopf Warth-Schröcken Here, you will find a gradient of roughly 70 % on two separate sections, making the Ochsakopf one of the steepest runs in the entire Ski Arlberg area.

Damüls-Mellau-Faschina Almost everything in life has two sides — and this ski area is no exception. In the high-altitude village of Damüls (1,429 m), the pistes start on your doorstep, taking you straight up into the mountains. Mellau, by contrast, sits centrally in the valley, with the Mellaubahn cable car carrying skiers comfortably up into the resort. The magic lies somewhere in between: sunny southfacing slopes combine with north-facing runs that stay in flawless condition late into the season, all set against breathtaking views. A local bus also links Damüls conveniently to the neighbouring Faschina ski area.

Egg-Schetteregg Schetteregg is particularly popular with younger skiing enthusiasts. A major reason is ‘Schetti’s Kinderland’, featuring a magic carpet, a ski carousel, and much more. S c h et t ifuc hs & C o The Egg-Schetteregg ski area is particularly popular with families. Schetti’s Kinderland is freely accessible and makes getting started easier with a ski carousel, conveyor belt and small practice elements. Schettifuchs and his companions — hedgehog, squirrel and bunny — guide visitors through the area, show‑ ing which routes suit their own ability. At August’s Land, skiing is playfully extended with figures, tunnels, waves and small jumps. Whether it’s your first attempt or you’re already a bit more practised, it’s about enjoying skiing and it feeling good.

Caution!

Respect Your Boundaries Anyone out exploring nature should remember that it is a highly sensitive habitat for plants and animals that warrants our protection. Please avoid taking shortcuts through wooded areas, as these often serve as havens for wildlife. The sharp edges of skis and snow‑ boards can also easily damage young trees. Please observe restricted hunting areas and choose an alternative tour dest ination if necessary. In short: respect protected and conservation areas and abide by local restrictions. 🌐 respektiere-deine-grenzen.at

Safety Tips for Off-Piste Skiing ↘ Off-piste skiing at own risk. This brochure only contains route suggestions. ↘ Skiing in open terrain is most enjoyable once you’ve mastered the technique. Bregenzerwald ski schools offer courses for this. ↘ Suitable equipment and clothing are essential safety factors. ↘ Anyone heading off-piste requires avalanche safety equipment (avalanche transceiver, probe, shovel, first aid kit) and must know how to use it. ↘ Do not set off too late. Dusk sets in at around 4:30pm in winter. ↘ Do not set off in snowfall or fog. ↘ Local ski and mountain guides who know the terrain will ensure you reach your destination and return home safely.

Where No Snow Cats Go

For those who prefer to roam beyond the groomed pistes, the Bregenzerwald is the perfect place. The wide range of ski tours includes both easy and challenging routes, with ascents taking anywhere from two to five hours. Afterwards, you glide back down over magnificent slopes. Suitable touring skis and emergency equipment (avalanche transceiver, probe, shovel, first aid kit) are available at local rental shops. We highly recommend tackling these tours only alongside qualified mountain or ski guides. Ski Touring

This not only ensures your safety but also provides you with invaluable local tips. And one thing is certainly out of place on any ski tour: recklessness and overconfidence.

Cross-Country Skiing

Cross-Country skiing is the perfect combination of a full-body workout, an endurance sport — and a nature experience. Anyone gliding along the perfectly groomed trails in the Bregenzerwald should therefore also take the time to enjoy the view. And treat themselves to a highlight or two before and after, as well. 9am Breakfast at s’Frie in Schoppernau. If nothing else, for the excellent coffee.

2pm First for the body, then for the mind. Or in other words: a visit to the Barockbaumeister Museum in Au.

5pm 6pm Right across from the cheese dairy is the perfect spot to round off the day: the Vinothek Franz Michl.

Shopping at the Bergkäserei Schoppernau. A wonderful place to stock up on cheese to take home.

Winter Activities The varying altitudes of the Bregenzerwald open up an exceptionally diverse range of leisure options, even during the winter months. Because although Austropop legend Wolfgang Ambros famously proclaimed that ‘Schifoan is des leiwandste’ (skiing is the best), one thing is equally certain: even on days when you choose not to strap any boards to your feet, there is a wealth of activities on offer for active souls.

Winter Hiking Hiking is often seen as a summer activity. And yes, people do generally hike more in summer. But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy wonderful winter walks and hikes in the Bregenzerwald. Numerous winter hiking trails lead through glorious landscapes to breathtaking viewpoints. Staying on marked trails is especially crucial in winter when there is snow. That’s why they are signposted in bright pink — providing a striking contrast to the snow- covered landscape.

Snowshoeing Quietly exploring the snow. Joining a guided snowshoe hike — offered in several villages during the day or evening — is always well worth it. Under expert guidance, you not only learn the proper technique for walking in this unusual ‘footwear’, but you also reach special spots you might not otherwise discover on your own. If you set out independently, you are moving through open nature. Therefore, it is essential to monitor the current avalanche situation, plan your tour carefully and respect wildlife protection zones. That way, you can enjoy the peaceful winter landscapes without disturbing sensitive habitats.

‘Packen wir die Sache am Schopf’ Not only because, as the German expression suggests, that is where problems are best grasped. But also because the ‘Schopf’ itself may hold the key to understanding the architectural culture of the Bregenzerwald. Let us step inside. A defining feature of the traditional Wälderhaus, the ‘Schopf’ — a type of loggia — occupies a space between indoors and outdoors, between shelter and openness, between village and landscape. It is a place of transition, connection and encounter. And therein, it seems to me, lies the secret of an architectural culture whose influence extends far beyond Vorarlberg. The Bregenzerwald has never tried to freeze tradition. Instead, connections were forged: between the familiar village and contemporary architecture, between regional identity and the new. Where else in Austria will you find this? Anyone walking through the villages senses that modern buildings are not seen as alien objects but as the continuation of a story. If you mentally step into the interior of a typical Wälderhaus, another thing stands out: the short distances. Barn, storage and living quarters are closely connected. Everything relates to everything else. This, too, strikes me as a fitting image for the region’s building culture. Architects and craftspeople do not work in separate worlds here.

The distance between design and execution is small. Ideas are developed together; they often seem restrained, self-evident. Yet whoever steps closer discovers the real quality. It smells of timber and the art of cooperation. At the heart of all this building stand not buildings, but people. Mayors, local councillors, building clients, craft enterprises and committed citizens who summon the courage to allow the new in prominent places. And to engage with one another. Anyone who steps inside one of the new primary schools in the Bregenzerwald understands at once what this means. For a moment, you want to be six years old again.

Architecture & Craftsmanship

Architecture is always more than a building. It is even more than the sum of all individual buildings combined. This is especially true in the Bregenzerwald. Here, architecture is a visible expression of regional identity. Architecture & Craftsmanship

From Hand to Wall

You barely need a particularly keen eye for them to instantly catch your attention, as they are a defining feature of architecture in the Bregenzerwald: wooden shingles. The German word ‘Schindel’ stems from the Latin ‘scindere’, which translates as ‘to split’ and refers to the manufacturing method. Originally, these wooden shingles were used for roofing. It was not until the industrial production of steel nails began in the 19th century that people also started using them as façade cladding.

86

Thanks to their resource-friendly production and durability, shingle façades are found not only on historic houses but — bucking the trend for large-scale elements with low assembly costs — also in modern architecture. A well-crafted shingle façade will easily endure for many decades.

Werkraum Bregenzerwald

It is hardly a bold claim to state that Bregenzerwald’s craft enterprises enjoy an outstanding reputation far beyond the region’s borders. And for good reason: these workshops combine age-old skills and traditional design idioms with state- of-the-art production methods and contemporary design. In 1999, around 100 innovative craftsmen joined forces to form the Werkraum Bregenzerwald association. Since then, it has championed craftsmanship and building culture, showcasing the achievements of its members and advocating for cooperative practice. In practical terms, the Werkraum organises exhibitions and the ‘Handwerk+ Form’ competition, alongside workshops, lectures and guided tours. It also invests in the next generation: together with the Bezauer Wirtschaftsschulen, the association runs the Werkraum Schule Bregenzerwald.

88

Werkraum Haus Since the summer of 2013, the Werkraum Bregenzerwald has been headquartered at the Werkraum Haus in the centre of Andelsbuch. Designed by the renowned Swiss architect Peter Zumthor and constructed by Werkraum member craftsmen, the edifice serves a dual purpose: with its hall-like architecture and glass façade, it is both a gathering place and a colossal vitrine – a showcase for the Bregenzerwald’s culture of craft and design. It displays pieces by Werkraum artisans alongside regularly rotating exhibitions. The shop also stocks selected pieces from member craftsmen, alongside a well-curated selection of specialised literature.

Exhibition: Successor Format to Handwerk+Form 2026 Fri, 30 October 2026 – Sat, 23 October 2027 Handwerk+Form counts among the most significant formats for contemporary craft in the Bregenzerwald. Competition, festival and exchange converge here, demonstrating the diversity, innovation, and social significance of regional craft culture. The tenth edition of ‘Handwerk+Form’ in October 2026 marks the starting point for its successor format at the Werkraum Haus. A rotating selection of submitted and award-winning objects and concepts will be on display. Visitors can touch the exhibits, experience the materials and learn more about their creation. A diverse supporting programme of workshops and lectures complements the exhibition.

Programme Public tours take place every Wednesday at 11am and Thursday at 4pm (no booking required). Enthusiasts can experience craft up close through workshops and lectures with varying focus themes.

Werkraum Café Hospitality is as rooted in the Bregenzerwald as its craft culture. Hence, the building also hosts the Werkraum Café. It serves regional lunchtime menus featuring seasonal ingredients, as well as coffee, drinks and cakes throughout the day. Opening Hours Tue – Fri 10am – 6pm Sat 10am – 4pm Closed Sundays, Mondays and public holidays

Depot Tours Featuring over 100 exhibits, the Werkraum Depot offers insights into the work and impact of regio nal craft enterprises. The pieces are sourced from the Vorarlberg Museum collection and loans from Werkraum Bregenzerwald members. The Werkraum Depot is accessible by guided tour only.

BUS:STOP Krumbach

Waiting for a bus is generally not a particularly thrilling affair, and bus stops (known in the local dialect as ‘Wartehüsle’) are therefore usually rather unspectacular structures. In Krumbach, things are very different. In 2014, renowned architectural firms from seven countries were invited to design seven bus stops — which were then constructed in collaboration with local craftspeople and partner architects.

Architecture & Craftsmanship

These ‘Wartehüsle’ represent a synergy of people and nature, of tradition and modernity, and of craftsmanship and architectural culture. They were even awarded a special prize at the Austrian State Prize for Architecture. Ever since, they have attracted not only people waiting for buses, but also architecture enthusiasts from all over the world.

Art & Culture: Why They Matter

A professional perspective: Culture is far more than entertainment. It creates spaces for social debate and reveals who is heard and who is not, which stories are told and which perspectives are missing. Issues such as gender equity and diversity are therefore not marginal topics, but central questions of a democratic society. Particularly in a region like the Bregenzerwald, it becomes clear how important it is to connect global developments with local experiences. The Frauenmuseum Hittisau (Women’s Museum) sees itself as a place where social issues that reach far beyond the region are debated, while at the same time being related to local life. Culture strengthens not only our mutual understanding but also a society’s ability to respond to the challenges of our time openly, critically and in solidarity, and to help shape our future.

A personal perspective: Culture – in whatever form it takes – brings places and regions to life and shapes their identity. Here in the Bregenzerwald, we preserve many old customs and traditions, yet at the same time we remain curious, creative and open to the new. That is also why you will find a truly impressive cultural offering here, with enormous variety: from the traditional Alpabtrieb (alpine cattle drive) and fascinating museums through to progressive theatre. Thanks to this diversity, as a culture enthusiast I regularly have the opportunity to engage with new perspectives and different points of view — ideally in good company. After all, cultural institutions are also places of encounter, whether that means a shared outing with familiar faces or meeting new people. Lisa Rädler Culture-loving local (‘Wälderin’)

Barockbaumeister Museum in Au Centuries ago, Bregenzerwald craftsmanship was a thriving export. Over 800 Baroque buildings — including churches, castles and palaces — across southern Germany, Switzerland and Alsace in France were built in the 17th and 18th centuries by master builders, stucco workers and artisans from the region. Many hailed from Au, where this museum now explores the legacy of the old masters and the founding of the ‘Auer Zunft’ (Au Guild). Exhibits include rare originals such as the guild chest from the era of founder Michael Beer, a journeyman’s book, architectural plans, stucco fragments and a pasture board from around 1730.

Forest

Forest

In the Bregenzerwald, the forest (Wald) is more than just part of the name. For many people it is an important part of life — a source of raw materials for craft and architecture, a place of work, or a retreat and source of strength. Forest

103

Height in the Bregenzerwald: up to 45m.

The name ‘Tanne’ (fir) derives from the Old High German ‘tanna’, which used to mean forest

Can live to be up to 600 years old — considered its physiological age

Cones stand upright and disintegrate on the branch once fully ripe — leaving only the spindle behind

Needles are not prickly, flat and usually notched at the tip

Grows best in deep, moist to damp, nutrient-rich soils

Silver fir wood is virtually resin-free

With its taproot system reaching down to 1.60m, it can penetrate dense, heavy soils very well

104

Forest

Silver Fir Facts The silver fir is a remarkable tree. It feels particularly at home in the Bregenzerwald, as it loves higher-altitude, shady slopes. Its deep roots help it weather stormy times just as well as prolonged droughts. It is also important for the forest itself. Its needles decompose rapidly to form valuable humus. A fir like this can live for up to 600 years. Whenever you talk about trees (or timber) in the Bregenzerwald, you inevitably end up discussing craftsmanship. The silver fir is no exception. Yet for a long time it was left out of local timber construction – quite literally: for decades, its wood was almost exclusively used for weather-facing exterior façades. In interior fit-out, however, the silver fir was largely ignored. And for good reason: freshly felled, the wood is significantly heavier, causing transport issues. More over, the timber is considered unruly; it tends to splinter and crack, causing heavy wear on tools. In short: people preferred to steer clear of it. This has since changed. When processed correctly, silver fir timber also has several advantages: dense, largely knot-free growth, even quality and a low resin content. Over the years, the wood does not fade; instead, it develops a beautiful silvery-grey patina outdoors. If you are ever unsure whether you are looking at a fir or a spruce, a simple rule of thumb helps: spruce will prick, but fir won’t stick. By the way: the silver fir gets its name from its strikingly light-grey bark — not from the white stripes on the underside of its needles. Still, these make it easy to spot.

Nagelfluhkette Nature Park Where the Bregenzerwald meets the Allgäu in Germany, a magnificent cultural landscape has evolved over many centuries. A finely woven mosaic of forests, meadows, streams, alpine pastures, gorges, rocks and moorlands — all sustainably managed by human hands. ↘ The first and thus far only crossborder Nature Park between Austria and Germany ↘ International conservation area covering 497 km² ↘ Unites nine municipalities in the Vorderer Bregenzerwald (Langen bei Bregenz, Doren, Hittisau, Krumbach, Langenegg, Lingenau, Riefensberg, Sibratsgfäll, Sulzberg) with ten in the Allgäu ↘ Rich in rare flora and fauna: Apollo butterfly, golden eagle, stone crayfish, capercaillie and wood pink ↘ Named after the imposing Nagelfluh kette, a 24-km-long mountain range at the heart of the park ↘ Characterised by Nagelfluh rock — affectionately dubbed ‘God’s concrete’ owing to its appearance ↘ Highest peak: the Hochgrat at 1,834 m ↘ Over 500 alpine pastures in total ↘ Five rangers cover the entire Nature Park, two based in the Bregenzerwald

‘Protect and utilise’ is the motto of the Nagelfluhkette Nature Park. Treating nature with respect is especially important in winter. Forest

Nomen est omen In English: ‘The name is a sign’. After all, everything was once forest. True, that was a good 1,000 years ago, but back then almost the whole of today’s Bregenzerwald was covered in forest. That is why it bears its name. (Forest translates to ‘Wald’ in German) Even today, the region and its 23 villages still have a considerable proportion of forest: roughly 40 %. The main tree species here are spruce, beech and silver fir. One reason for people’s connection with the forest is that — unlike in many other federal states of Austria — the vast majority of woodlands are in smallscale private ownership. There are hardly any major landowners here, and no state-owned forests. So it is the respective owners who take care to manage ‘their’ forest with due foresight. Usually over generations.

Forest in the Bregenzerwald

Conversely, the forest also protects people and animals.

40 %

More than 80% of the woodland here counts as so-called protective forest. This means it minimises the risk of avalanches, landslides and flooding for villages and roads.

80 %

In turn, timber as a renewable resource provides eco-friendly energy. Almost all municipalities have biomass district heating plants. The woodlands also act as a natural air conditioning system for the region, and the timber is the basis of the local timber-building culture.

Of the Total Area is Forest

Of Forest Area is Protective Forest

No State-Owned Forest

The importance of the forest can therefore hardly be overstated. It is far more than just a namesake.

Instead, it is an association of diverse disciplines, bringing together dairies, traditional inns and farms. Over 160 members dedicate themselves to preserving regional culture and culinary heritage, with education, sales and tastings playing an important role. Naturally, the spotlight shines brightest on the region’s ‘Alpkäse’ (alpine cheese) and ‘Bergkäse’ (mountain cheese). Around 5,000 tonnes of Bergkäse are produced annually across 11 valley dairies, supplemented by roughly 200 tonnes of Alpkäse, which is made by hand directly on the high pastures. Both are sourced exclusively from hay milk — a rare distinction within the European Union, where hay milk accounts for a mere three percent of total milk production.

A key aspect of Bregenzerwald farming, and thus its cheese production, is ‘Drei stufenlandwirtschaft’ (three-staged farming). Once the valley pastures are grazed in spring, the cattle move to the ‘Vorsäß’ (low mountain pasture)– a kind of intermediate station or low alpine pasture — before migrating to the high alpine pastures for peak summer. The journey then reverses, step by step — or stage by stage — back to the home barn. This form of farming ensures optimal use of the pastures and a particularly healthy diet for the dairy cows, thanks above all to the alpine pastures and their many herbs. In 2010, this traditional farming system was added to Austria’s National Inventory of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Spa & Wellbeing

In German we call ‘wellbeing’ ‘wellness’: The word ‘wellness’ has long been part of everyday German. The English term is made up of ‘well’ (good, healthy) and ‘-ness’, a suffix used to describe a state of being. So you could say: wellness means bringing yourself into a good state. Spa & Wellbeing

Yoga is said to help direct your attention to the here and now. And since the ‘here’ in particular has a special quality in the Bregenzerwald, that is basically no bad thing to begin with — whether you live in the region or are visiting. It is also a perfect complement for those who like to stay active. The exercises keep muscles, tendons and joints supple and strengthen them at the same time. Ideas for ‘All Sorted?’

Soap Making in Schoppernau Handcrafted items often hold a special value. For those seeking a truly precious bar of soap in this vein, Karin Beer is the perfect choice. The soap-making process relies on selected fats and oils, lye and Schoppernau spring water. Blossoms and herbs from her own garden and the surrounding alpine meadows lend the soaps their colour and tex‑ ture. After roughly 2.5 hours, participants take home not only newfound knowledge but also half a kilo of handmade soap and a booklet of recipes in German. The workshop is open to those aged 14 and over; €68 per person.

Discover the World of Brewing The Brauerei Egg and its products regularly win awards, speaking volumes about their quality. During a brewery tour, visitors can take a look behind the scenes and experience the production process up close. Afterwards, guests can verify this quality for themselves in the ‘Braustüble’ (brewery tavern), as the tour naturally concludes with a tasting session. Dates and prices on request. Cheers.

A Visit to Metzler Naturhautnah in Egg There is a great deal to experience at Metzler Naturhautnah. In the ‘Sennschule’ (dairy school), for instance, visitors can craft their own fresh cheese. Those more interested in the theory are well catered for on a guided tour of the premises, while tastings await at the cheese and farm-speciality buffet. Younger guests, in particular, will delight in the small-animal petting area.

Learn all about cheese Holdamoos Nature Experience in Au The centrepiece of the Holdamoos Nature Experience is over 440 years old – a highly respectable age, especially for a ‘Vorsäßhütte’ (a hut on the low mountain pasture). This is all the more impressive given that the hut, built in 1582, remains preserved in its original state with all typical rooms (kitchen, parlour, hayloft, etc.), having seen barely any alterations over the centuries. From 8 January to 2 April 2027, the hut is open to visitors daily from 2pm to 4pm. Admission is complimentary and no prior booking is required. It is an easy 15-minute walk from either Au-Rehmen or the Diedamskopfbahn car park in Schoppernau.

Cheese is a fascinating product, not least in its making. The process extends far beyond the initial dairy work (‘Sennen’); the cheese requires regular care throughout its maturation. Various establishments offer insights into this craft – such as Alpenkäse Bregenzerwald in Bezau, the Bergkäserei Schoppernau or the Käsekeller in Lingenau. It helps visitors truly understand why Bregenzerwald cheese tastes as good as it does.
