Cape Coral City Council will consider a replacing its road impact fee with a different type of levy on new construction today.

A public hearing will be held on a proposal that would repeal the city’s existing fee and create a new mobility fee to pay for transportation-related projects.

The city’s Road Impact Fee was established in 1989 at $1,034 per single-family residential development as a key funding mechanism for transportation infrastructure. In 2005, the fee was raised to $2,698 with a policy to recalculate every three years.

92 .5 FOX News hosting ‘Field of Flags’ in Cape

92.5 FOX News invites the Southwest Florida community to join in a moving patriotic tradition, the “Field of Flags” ceremony at Bernice Braden Park in Cape Coral.

Each year, 92.5 FOX News pays tribute to the 2,977 innocent lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001, by planting one American flag for every soul lost in the attacks. What began as a solemn tribute has grown into a community tradition where neighbors come together in honor, unity, and quiet strength.

The event began at Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1. The flags will remain standing through Sept. 11, creating a powerful visual memorial for all to visit and experience as they drive west along Cape Coral Parkway.

“This tradition is one of the most heartfelt and important events we hold each year,” said Jim Schwartzel, Owner of 92.5 FOX News. “It’s not about politics. It’s about patriotism. It’s about honoring those we lost, and remembering the day that changed us all forever.”

“The city’s road impact fee has not been comprehensively updated in 19 years, despite significant changes in development patterns, construction costs, and transportation needs,” council agenda documents state.

The Public Works Transportation Division Staff Report also stated that in “August 2025, the City of Cape Coral completed a Finding of Extraordinary Circumstances to support a mobility fee increase exceeding 50%. The study demonstrated exceptional growth, rising travel demand, inflation-driven cost increases, and a criti-

cal need for updated infrastructure funding. This finding ensures the city can implement the fee in compliance with state law and keep pace with long-term mobility needs.”

To support a modern, multimodal transportation system, the city developed a Mobility Plan it says will align with both the current and future land use, development patterns, and infrastructure needs.

The plan would establish “a clear framework for identifying and funding capacity-enhancing transportation projects; ensure new development contributes its fair share through area-specific mobility

County enters partnership to improve weather radar coverage and monitoring of severe storms

Equipment will be placed on roof of the Lee County Public Safety Center

A weather-watching partnership may make Lee County safer as storms approach.

Lee County on Tuesday entered into a public-private partnership that officials say will help fill in the gap in National Weather Service radar coverage in Lee County and allow improved monitoring of severe weather.

The Lee Board of County Commissioners voted to approve a site license agreement that authorizes Kentucky-based Climavision to install weather radar equipment on the roof of Lee County’s recently opened Public Safety Center.

“This public-private partnership will fill a known gap in radar coverage for the National Weather Service and will improve access to data and the ability to predict and forecast severe weather in the region,” officials said.

Lee County sits in a gap between weather radars located in Tampa, Key West, Miami and Melbourne. This gap means that the National Weather Service cannot see certain weather phenomena below 6,000 feet, including waterspouts and tornadoes. This issue was illustrated in a 2020 report – “Gaps in NEXRAD

fees; support smart growth and infill development through tailored investment strategies and maintain consistency with the Comprehensive Plan and long-range infrastructure objectives.

The fees, to be charged on new construction and development projects, would fund roadways and intersections, multimodal, transit and mobility programs.

The meeting will be held at 4 p.m. today, Sept. 3, in City Council chambers, at Cape Coral City Hall, 1015 Cultural Park Blvd.

The meeting is open to the public.

A 17-year-old was killed and one person was injured after a personal watercraft and a boat collided near Captiva Pass Saturday.

“Preliminary information indicates that a personal watercraft (PWC) with two occupants and a 28-foot vessel with four occupants were traveling in the channel in Pine Island Sound near Captiva Pass when a collision occurred,” the FWC said in a press release. “The occupants of the 28-foot vessel were uninjured. One of the occupants of the PWC was airlifted to a nearby hospital, while the second occupant was tragically pronounced deceased as a result of the incident.”

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman Bradley Johnson said the agency was currently not releasing the place of residence for the deceased victim. The FWC is the lead agency in the investigation, which remained active Monday.

Multiple agencies responded to the crash Saturday including the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Lee County EMS, Upper Captiva Fire Department, Cape Coral Fire Department, Useppa Island Fire Department, Iona-McGregor Fire Department, Pine Island Fire Department and The United States Coast Guard.

“The FWC extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the individual who lost their life in this accident,” the FWC said in a press release. “Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.”

WILD About CROW to support major renovation of visitor center

Tickets for the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife’s (CROW) annual fundraiser went on sale Labor Day, Sept. 1.

Wild About CROW will take place on Jan. 10 from 6-9:30 p.m. at The Forest Country Club in Fort Myers. It will feature live and silent auctions, dinner with an open bar, encounters with CROW’s animal ambassadors, activities with prizes, and the chance to learn about the patients that it cares for.

Executive Director Alison Charney Hussey described the event as more of a friend-raiser.

“WILD about CROW always proves to be a fun and successful evening,” she said. “It brings our community together to celebrate the incredible wildlife that surrounds us and is always a meaningful way to support the work we do.”

This year’s proceeds will support a critical project: a major renovation of and upgrade to CROW’s Visitor Education Center (VEC). The 4,800-square-foot center was built between 2007 and 2009 and considered innovative at the time. The funds raised will provide a modern and engaging space for visitors to learn about Southwest Florida’s wildlife and the vital work that is done at CROW every day.

“It needs an upgrade — our dorms need an upgrade, our student housing needs an upgrade,” Hussey said. “So we’re really focusing on the sustainability of CROW, on the experience of CROW.”

After Hurricane Ian in 2022, the focus was on rebuilding the hospital and what the patients needed.

“Now, we need to remember that we’re an educational facility also,” she said. “As much as we are an animal wildlife hospital, a good part of our mission is education.”

The upgraded VEC will offer visitors the opportunity to experience the journey of wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and release, as well as engage the public through daily presentations, children’s camps, speaker series and interactive workshops. The center is also home to several of CROW’s ambassador animals, which are core members of the education team.

At the annual fundraiser, attendees will have the chance to interact with those team members.

“WILD About CROW would not be WILD About CROW without a visit from our animal ambassadors,” Hussey said.

There will be a live and silent auction.

“You can expect trips, you can expect experiential type of packages, as well as nice jewelry,” she said of the live auction items.

“We’re hoping to have a plethora of silent auction items for people to chose from,” Hussey added, noting that the silent one will be available again online so non-attendees can take part if they wish to.

The evening will also feature games and surprises.

“The unexpected surprises are always a highlight,” she said.

Attendees will enjoy dinner and an open bar.

“We want everyone to fully enjoy their experience,” Hussey said. “The chef and team at The Forest Country Club are top notch.”

The fundraiser will also spotlight current patients, so people can learn about them and CROW’s care.

In line with WILD About CROW, animal prints or attire will be encouraged.

“I think every year people try to outdo the year before,” she said, explaining that last year’s attendees wore leopard print dresses to one man in a zebra print jacket. “Start planning now for your attire.”

Edison National Bank/Bank of the Islands has returned as the presenting title sponsor.

“They have been such longtime supporters of CROW,” Hussey said. “We are honored by Edison National Bank/ Bank of the Islands’ continued support of CROW.”

Limited early bird tickets will be $200, and general tickets will be $250.

The community is encouraged to reserve a spot when the ticket sales open on Sept. 1.

“Every ticket sold brings us one step closer to creating an educational space that matches the quality of care and conservation CROW is known for,” she said.

“And I think it’s the best fundraiser around because everyone leaves with a smile on their face, a full belly, arms full of goodies and just a good feeling that they’ve done right by our wildlife,” Hussey added.

For tickets or more information, visit https://WILD26. givesmart.com.

Sponsorship opportunities are available, and auction items are welcome. For more information, contact Director of Development & Communications Grace Murphy at development@crowclinic.org or 239-322-5073.

County gets more grant money for

Additional $1.2 million brings tally up to $21.8 million

Lee County has accepted an additional $1.2 million in grant funds to address beach and dune erosion caused by a pair of hurricanes.

The Lee Board of County Commissioners voted Tuesday to approve an amended grant agreement with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to provide additional funds for the Hurricane Ian and Hurricane Nicole Recovery Project.

The amendment will increase the total grant to more than $21.8 million, with no local match requirement.

The main project consisted of 1.1 miles of shoreline within Lovers Key State Park and 0.8 miles of shoreline at the northern end of Bonita Beach (Little Hickory Island).

In addition, in cooperation with the City of Bonita Springs, hurricane damage to the upper beach and dunes was repaired on a one-time basis south on Bonita Beach

to the Lee-Collier county line. Weeks Marine Inc. excavated, transported and placed beach-compatible sand from a Gulf sand source to nourish multiple beach segments.

The work was completed in March.

The Lovers Key and Bonita Beach shorelines sustained beach and dune erosion from Hurricane Ian, a Category 4 storm in September 2022, and Hurricane Nicole, a Category 1 storm in November 2022. The state, through FDEP, reached out to local governments to determine beach-recovery needs.

The needs were compiled into the Hurricanes Ian and Nicole Recovery Plan, published by FDEP in December 2022, and used by the legislature in support of special and general appropriations.

DDD Sommer Invitational

Mariner’s Angel Cruz and Dylan Macias-Buenrostro finished 1-2 in the boys race, while Jazlyn Forbes won the girls race, leading Oasis to the team championship.

Cruz, a senior, crossed the line in 16.17.1, with sophomore MaciasBuenrostro’s 16.20.9 was 38 seconds ahead of the third-place finisher.

With less than a full squad of runners, the Tritons did not place as a team. Naples and Fort Myers took the top two team spots.

The Oasis boys were ninth, led by Adrian Sosa in 23rd place. Ida Baker was 14th.

Meanwhile, Forbes completely dominated the girls field, finishing at 18:06.2, more than a minute faster than Community School of Naples’ Sienna Audrey.

The DDD Sommer Invitational course at Estero Community Park is considered one of Florida’s toughest.

Forbes has posted the second-fastest time in Florida (17:55.30) this cross country season.

That time was at the Dunbar Tiger Jamboree earlier this month, when she broke the course record.

The Sharks’ Madison Easton (21:14.4) and Lilliana Sipe (21:18.7) were fifth and sixth overall, and Madison Boyko finished 18th.

Aubrey Rogers was second in the girls team standings, three points back of Oasis. Ida Baker came in 14th.

Port Charlotte storms past North, 63-7

After the game, interim North Fort Myers head coach Dwayne Mack could only shake his head, smile and say “no comment.”

What could he say? His Red Knights had just experienced shock and awe against Port Charlotte on Friday. Save for a few minutes in the first quarter, it was complete Port Charlotte domination as standout quarterback Logan Flaherty threw for five touchdowns as Port Charlotte handed North Fort Myers a 63-7 thumping in a game that had a running clock for the entire second half.

Port Charlotte is now 2-0 and has outscored its opponents 125-7. North is 0-2.

The Pirates scored twice in the first three minutes, sandwiched around a Chavon Lizana interception. Flaherty found Eli Pearl twice for 6 and 30 yards, respectively, to make it 14-0.

North Fort Myers tried to make a game of it. It drove 68 yards on eight plays, with Christian Weber running the ball in from four yards to get the Red Knights on the board.

The appeared set to tie the game after recovering a fumble on the ensuing kickoff at the Port Charlotte 28.

The Knights stalled and tried a short field goal. It was blocked and Ahmad’dra Greene scooped it up and ran it the other way for a score to make it 21-7 late in the

first quarter.

The floodgates opened from there. In the second quarter, Flaherty hit Dallas Lambert on a nice 24-yard touchdown in the back of the end zone, then hit Pearl, then Lambert again on another nice catch. Late in the half, Greene made an interception on a screen pass and took it back 42 yards to make the score 49-7 at the half.

Bruce Blanden added another two touchdowns for the Pirates in the second half.

Flaherty was 14 for 16 for 265 yards

and five touchdowns. Lambert had eight catches for 145 yards and two scores, while Pearl had four for 73 yards and three scores. Peter Kalphat had 78 yards rushing in garbage time for Port Charlotte while Blanden added 74 yards with his two touchdowns.

North Fort Myers quarterback Caedon Conn threw for 109 yards with two interceptions. Jamarion Irons had 48 yards on 16 carries to lead the Red Knights.

Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk to honor, support first responders and military personnel

Event to be held Sept. 6 at Florida SouthWestern State College in Fort Myers

The annual Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk will be held Saturday, Sept. 6, at Florida SouthWestern State College in Fort Myers. The event benefits the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, an organization that supports our nation’s fallen and catastrophically injured first responders, military heroes and their families.

Locally, the Run & Walk is chaired by Taylor Carpet One’s Lauren Taylor.

The Tunnel to Towers run and walk was founded in honor of the late Stephen Siller, a New York City firefighter who lost his life while fighting to save others

in the World Trade Center tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001. The event symbolizes Siller’s run through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel on 9/11, which had been closed for security purposes immediately after the attack. Determined to carry out his duty, he strapped 60 pounds of gear to his back and raced on foot through the tunnel to the Twin Towers, where he lost his life while saving others.

“We’re honored to be able to support this event once again,” said Taylor. “Through this event, we unite with our community to honor the heroes who gave everything

for our safety and freedom. Their courage serves as a lasting inspiration.”

Registration for the run and walk is divided into four categories:

n Adult Registration (ages 18+) -- $45 - Price increases to $50 after Sept. 5

The county has constructed a platform on the roof of the Public Safety Center to support Climavision’s weather radar tower and equipment. The county’s Public Safety Center officially opened in May; it’s a 36,873 square-foot, $38.5 million twostory addition to the Emergency Operations Center.

During blue-sky normal operations, the expanded building now houses Public Safety Administration, Emergency Medical Services, and the new Emergency Communications Center, with space for Public Safety’s Division of Emergency

In the sixth, Manuel Beltre doubled with one out. David Beckles followed with a single to center, making it 2-0.

The Mussels first hit of the night came on a leadoff double from Enrique Jimenez in the seventh. Dunedin reliever Danny Thompson Jr. then struck the side to leave Jimenez in scoring position. In the
