‘BackStage Broads’ to premiere at Cape Cafe Dessert Theatre

“BackStage Broads” the latest comedy by Joe Simonelli and Lori Sigrist, who just had their comedy “Half Baked” end a successful run at The Broadway Palm last month, will premiere at The Cape Cafe Dessert Theatre in Cape Coral Thursday, July 17. The play will run every Thursday through Saturday at 7 p.m. with 2 p.m .matinees until mid September.

The play involves a senior woman who inherits a small community theater from her uncle and tries her best to revive it after it has been sitting empty for 20years! She recruits her best friend Myrtle and her two neighbors to help as they try to mount their premiere production of ‘Pygmulian,” a riff on the original Shaw play now set in an old west frontier town. But all is not how it seems and hilarity ensues when three “actors?” also join the cast!

Richard Leon said.

So far there have been two meetings dedicated to chapter four of the charter, as it has everything to do with council, the election process and pay.

“We are having a healthy debate on what the public will want to see, and what the council will want to see,” he said.

Although the discussion has gone on at multiple meetings for this chapter, Leon

said honestly the process is not taking long enough as the charter is a 50-year document that they definitely want to spend time talking about to see what the best fit for the city is.

The agenda includes articles IV. Government, Article VII. Financial procedures and Article VIII. Elections. The meeting also includes proposed meeting dates, and a 30-minute public input ses-

sion.

“They are all open to the public,” Leon said, adding that public input is at the beginning of the meeting.

The proposed remaining meeting schedule includes Tuesday, Aug. 5, at 9 a.m.; Tuesday Sept. 9, at 9 a.m.; Thursday, Oct. 9, at 5 p.m.; Tuesday, Nov. 4, at 9 a.m.;

The opening weekend of Slipaway Food Truck Park & Marina went better than the owners had anticipated, complete with an incredible buzz of those that patronized the park.

“It went spectacular,” Slipaway Food Truck Park & Marina Co-Owner Gary Aubuchon said. “The opening evening – 4th of July – could not have gone better. We were very fortunate the weather cooperated with us, too. The buzz within Slipaway was palpable. People were very excited to have a waterfront destination of this caliber in Southwest Florida. Everyone I talked to over the weekend was genuinely excited that this destination was theirs to go to anytime.”

The facility has 10 food truck spots, a marina with 26 boat slips, as well as space for four gas docks, slip store, six pavilions and a main pavilion with a bar, and seating on the water and by the store.

Two days before Independence Day, Cape Coral was inundated with heavy thunderstorms. On the Fourth, though, the area at the foot of the Cape Coral Bridge dawned to sunshine and ended in a thunderous rain of fireworks as the city of Cape Coral’s largest event, Red, White & BOOM! drew thousands to the South Cape.

“There are always lots of families and lots of kids, “ said Kelleman of her family’s second

Billed by the city’s Parks and Recreation Department as Southwest Florida’s largest single-day event, attendees and vendors alike began arriving by 4 p.m., wearing red, white and blue outfits, sparkling hats, patriotic paint and even the American flag. Alissa Kelleman and her family were among them.

“We began talking about this project almost three years ago. It’s great to see the central pavilion today. It looks like they’re calling that area The Helm. We designed the space to be something very casual with a lot of clean lines. I think it’s a great space for family and friends to gather,” Amber Vitale, interior designer for the Wegman Design Group, said.

Aubuchon said they have 75 employees – servers, bartenders, dock hands and individuals working at the slip store.

“I was there for lunch yesterday with my wife, and the place at noon was almost completely full. By 1 p.m. it was. When

Man charged in two incidents involving minors

Officers with the Cape Coral Police Department arrested and charged a man Sunday with lewd or lascivious touching and burglary in separate incidents involving minors.

Nelson Antonio Prado, 27, described by CCPD as a transient from Cape Coral, was charged with one count of indecent, lewd or lascivious touching of certain minors, one count burglary of an occupied conveyance (unarmed) and one count of possession of burglary tools with the intent to use them.

According to a report from the CCPD, on Sunday, July 6, at around 1 p.m., officers were called to 1890 N.E. Pine Island Road, Cape Coral, for a report of inappropriate touching.

The caller said her 17-year-old daughter was groped from behind by an unknown man who abruptly left the location. Officers met with the minor and her family member. The family member said the minor was shopping in a different area of the store with her sibling. The two ran over to the family member to tell him that a man had grabbed the 17 year old. The family member confronted the male and asked him if he touched the minor, but the man didn’t respond and walked out of the store northbound, crossing Northeast Pine Island Road on foot.

The report states the minor told officers she was shopping with her sibling in the electronics section when a white male with short curly hair wearing a plaid shirt and sunglasses walked up to them and was “creeping” around them. They walked back to their family member until the male left. Once the male left, they returned to the electronics section and continued shopping.

The minor told officers the male then came back, grabbed her rear and the two ran back to their family member to tell him what happened. The sibling confirmed the male’s description.

A review of surveillance video confirmed the events and showed the male grab the minor.

At around 4 p.m. that same day, officers were called to 1819 N.E. Pine Island Road, Cape Coral, in reference to a burglary.

According to the CCPD, the reporting party said a white male with a beard, around 20-30 years old, attempted to enter her vehicle while her two minor daughters were inside. The male was last seen walking west through the parking lot toward 1733 N.E. Pine Island Road.

Officers reported observing a male matching the description and detained him. The reporting party confirmed he was the man who attempted to access her vehicle. The reporting party told officers she witnessed the man throw something inside nearby recycling bins. In those bins, officers found a torn-up Social Security card for Nelson Antonio Prado, police said.

The reporting party told officers she and her daughters went into the business to shop. When they exited the vehicle, the reporting party said she noticed a white male with a beard staring at her daughters near the store entrance. When they exited the business, the reporting party said the male was no longer there. The daughters then got into the rear right side of the vehicle and the front passenger seat, and the reporting party went back inside to assist a friend. When the reporting party returned to the car, she said her daughters were scared and visibly shaking. They told her the man attempted to open a door of the vehicle, but it was locked.

The police report states that the minors reported seeing the male “smiling creepily” at them in the store. They said he was staring right at them as he attempted to enter the rear right door of the vehicle, but the car was locked. He then walked to the front passenger door. The minors said they began screaming, and the man turned and walked away.

Officers completed a show-up, and both girls identified the man officers had detained as the one who tried to get into their vehicle.

While searching Prado’s person, officers found a screwdriver and a bottle of a silicon-based lubricant in his pockets.

Prado was arrested on burglary charges.

Police reported the minor in the inappropriate touching incident that occurred earlier that day was called to the secondary location for a show-up and identified Prado as the man who touched her inappropriately.

A detective in the Special Victims Unit assumed the case. Prado as transported to the Cape Coral Police Department for an interview and based on the investigation, he was also charged with lewd or lascivious touching of a minor, police said.

Nelson was transported to the Lee County Jail, where he is currently being held on a total of $35,000 bond.

and Tuesday, Dec. 2, at 9 a.m.

There are also potential second meeting dates proposed for Friday, Aug. 22, at 9 a.m.; Friday, Sept. 26, for 9 a.m.; Friday, Oct. 24, at 9 a.m.; Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 9 a.m.; and Friday, Dec. 5, at 9 a.m.

Leon said the meetings have been very productive with great conversations.

“It has gone very well,” he said.

The commission is doing a first glance at the charter, which includes going through every section. When they see something that catches their eye, they pull the item to discuss it. The commission will have a discussion with city staff, and the attorney’s staff of what they would like to do, followed by providing a presentation before council of the items they chose.

The upcoming meeting will be held at 5 p.m., Thursday, July 10, in the City Hall conference room 220A, 1015 Cultural Park Blvd.

The Caloosahatchee River is facing similar pressures to many other watersheds in south Florida. Rampant development, pollution, wetlands loss and degraded ecosystems are common throughout the state, but the Caloosahatchee also has the unique status of being part of a much larger, built environment that is intrinsically tied to water management, flood control and Everglades restoration.

Calusa Waterkeeper has invited Matt DePaolis of the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation to be its guest speaker at its quarterly State of Our Water event to explore some of the physical and legal threats impeding local waters, as well as potential tools and solutions available. The event will be held this Saturday, July 12, at 9:30 a.m., at the Iona House at Calusa Nature Center & Planetarium at 3450 Ortiz Ave., Fort Myers.

DePaolis, SCCF’s environmental policy director, trained as a field biologist working across Florida, the Bahamas and Guyana before pursuing his master’s in marine biology and a juris doctorate with a focus on ocean and coastal law from the University of Oregon. There he worked on diverse issues such as climate litigation and fisheries policy issues, regulations to protect water quality in streams for bull trout and worked as a fellow at the Ocean and Coastal Law Center, recommending solutions to marine plastic pollution. He first partnered with SCCF while working as the Coastal Policy Analyst Fellow at the University of Florida’s Center for Coastal Solutions and leapt at the chance to join the organization.

Calusa Waterkeeper Inc. will introduce the new Calusa Waterkeeper, Joe Cavanaugh, who is working to protect and restore the Caloosahatchee from Lake Okeechobee to the Coastal Waters of Lee County. Cavanaugh brings decades of experience in marine science, water quality monitoring and community engagement to the role. With a long-standing commitment to the Caloosahatchee and surrounding ecosystems, he has worked extensively at the local and federal levels to promote clean water policies and protect critical habitats.

Cavanaugh holds a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and a master’s in marine science from Boston University’s Marine Program in Woods Hole.

Shoeless Joe’s Sports Café makes Hall of Fame pitch for Shoeless Joe Jackson

Fort Myers restaurant launches ‘Elect Shoeless Joe’ campaign in response to MLB ruling on banned players

Shoeless Joe’s Sports Café is officially endorsing “Shoeless” Joe Jackson’s candidacy for induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

The Fort Myers restaurant and sports bar will launch its Elect Shoeless Joe campaign July 15, which coincides with the 2026 MLB All-Star Game and falls one day before Jackson’s birthday. The multi-year campaign will promote Jackson’s Hall of Fame candidacy through an online petition, in-restaurant events, food and drink specials, custom merchandise sales and community engagement activities.

“Shoeless Joe Jackson was one of the greatest baseball players of all time, yet his career has been marked by an asterisk for more than a century,” said Fritz Pohler, general manager at Shoeless Joe’s Sports Café. “He has already served his punishment and deserves to be in the Hall of Fame, so we’re starting a grassroots effort make sure he’s enshrined at the first opportunity.”

Jackson played 14 years of professional baseball between 1908 and 1920 for the Philadelphia Athletics, Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox. His .356 career batting average ranks fourth highest in MLB history, but his career was marred

by a scandal in which he admitted taking money in exchange for losing the 1919 World Series. In 1921, the MLB banned Jackson and seven of his White Sox teammates for life.

The multi-year campaign will promote Jackson’s Hall of Fame candidacy through an online petition, in-restaurant events, food and drink specials, custom merchandise sales and community engagement activities. The petition will be posted online at SholessJoes.com

In May, though, current MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred ruled that permanent bans expire upon an individual’s death; Jackson passed away in 1951. To be inducted into the Hall of Fame, Jackson’s name would need to be listed on at least 12 of the 16 ballots cast by the Classic Baseball Era Committee, which meets again in December 2027. If at least 75% of voting members select Jackson, he would be enshrined in August 2028.

The petition for Jackson’s Hall of Fame candidacy will be posted online at Shoeless-

Joes.com. Those who sign will automatically be entered into a monthly drawing in which one supporter will win a free T-shirt, as well as free wings and beer (if the winner age 21 or above) for a year.

During the week of July 14-20, Shoeless Joe’s Sports Café is offering a special on its Shoeless Joe hot dog and fries combo, and other specials.

Additional campaign kickoff activities include:

n July 15-16: All children wearing baseball or softball jerseys will receive free kids’ meals at breakfast, lunch and dinner.

n July 16: From 5 to 7 p.m., Mussel Man – the mascot of the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels – will interact with patrons and baseball fans.

During the Elect Shoeless Joe campaign, Shoeless Joe’s Sports Café also will be collecting donations of new shoes and socks that will be distributed to local students in need. The restaurant will be selling two campaign T-shirts that feature custom designs.

Shoeless Joe’s Sports Café is located within the DoubleTree By Hilton Fort Myers at Bell Tower, 13051 Bell Tower Drive in Fort Myers. For information, call 239-437-0650 or visit Shoeless-Joes.com.

CCPD awards $12,000 grant to ARCHway Institute

The Cape Coral Police Department has announced that it has awarded a $12,000 grant to the ARCHway Institute to support individuals in need of recovery services in the Cape Coral community. This funding is made possible through Opioid Settlement Funds received by the city as part of ongoing nationwide efforts to address the opioid epidemic.

The grant is part of the CCPD’s commitment to proactive community engagement and support for those affected by substance use disorders. ARCHway Institute will use the funds to provide financial assistance to individuals in Cape Coral to access services, including, but not limited to, treatment, recovery housing, peer sup-

port and counseling.

“We know that substance use disorder is a complex challenge that affects not only individuals, but entire families and neighborhoods,” Cape Coral Police Chief Anthony Sizemore said. “As a police department, we are committed to being part of the solution by connecting people to the resources they need to recover and thrive. This partnership with ARCHway Institute, made possible through Opioid Settlement Funds, allows us to provide real help and hope to those ready to take the first step toward recovery. Together, we are building a safer, healthier Cape Coral for everyone.”

ARCHway Institute is a national nonprofit organization with a strong local

presence, dedicated to supporting individuals and families impacted by substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. In addition to providing financial assistance, they provide education, connect individuals and families to local resources, and support the growth and development of peer support workers.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Cape Coral Police Department for their commitment to investing in recovery,” said Matt Brown, CEO of ARCHway Institute. “This funding will directly support individuals and families in Cape Coral who are facing the devastating impact of substance use and mental health challenges. Together, we are building a stronger, more connected

community where recovery is not only possible, but supported every step of the way.”

The grant exemplifies how community partnerships and strategic use of Opioid Settlement Funds can make a meaningful impact in the ongoing battle against addiction. Cape Coral joins other communities across the nation that are using these funds to invest in long-term recovery and public health solutions.

Slipaway: New food truck court and marina now open in South Cape

From page 1

we left there was a line of cars waiting to be parked by the valet and all the boat slips were full,” he said Monday morning.

Aubuchon said what he was really excited to see for lunch Sunday were the various ways in which people engaged with the trucks.

Every table has a QR code that gives patrons an opportunity to order from any of the 10 trucks and have their food brought to them. Individuals can also go up to the trucks and order what they would like.

“It was great to see people doing both things – walking from truck to truck and placing their orders and others sitting at their table in the main bar pavilion, or six individual pavilions and the servers bringing food out,” he said. “One of the servers shared that he got 32,000 steps on Saturday. Slipaway has its very own wellness plan.”

General Manager John Torres reviewed more than 140 food truck applicants and chose the best 10, based on the quality of food, level of friendliness, services and cleanliness.

“Every food truck has a unique cuisine. We have 10 different restaurants in one location,” Aubuchon said.

Not Yo Mama’s Tacos food truck owner Vanessa Franco said they’re not traditional, with such food names as “My Corn Addiction” and “McDaddy Big Mac Tacos.” She said they also use local vendors, which makes them different.

“I always wanted to do a food truck. When Ian happened, we drove around and gave free food in Naples, Marco Island and here – to workers, residents and firefighters. By 2022, we were able to start actually earning an income from the food truck. I am really excited about Slipaway.”

GreekSpot is another food truck destination.

“We are ready for this Food Truck

Park. Our brick-and-mortar restaurant over at Big John’s Plaza has a long history of family recipes and we will keep that going here. We make fresh tzatziki and hummus every single day,” GreekSpot owner Tina Chalkias said.

Slipaway, Aubuchon said, takes away the conversation of deciding where to eat when friends and family are visiting because there is something for everyone.

The marina also adds a splash of vibrancy with a “fantastic promenade that goes along the shoreline in front of the all the docks for seating,” Aubuchon said. “You will see people sitting down by the water watching boats come and go. It’s really a vibrant waterfront.”

There are dock hands to help everyone come in safely and securely.

“We just had a short boat trip today to get here. No time to even see any dolphins. It’s beautiful,” Teresa Gunter, Mayor John Gunter’s wife, said.

Aubuchon said there were people fueling up their boat Saturday morning before the park even opened, which was great to see.

The waterfront connectivity was a very important element of the project, as well as waterfront views from the pavilions and seating areas.

The central pavilion, dubbed “the helm” has a large bar and seating for 150 people.

The store is another beautiful space at the park, Aubuchon said, as it has everything a boater would need for a day on the water, as well as logo merchandise.

“People were really enjoying walking through the space. It’s again more views of the water – lots of sunlight and vistas. There is seating outside the slip store that was being used as well,” he said.

Aubuchon said it was amazing to see the culmination of what has been a five-year journey, open and be so well received.

“The one aspect that was even better than I thought, was the quality of the food

from the 10 food trucks. The most difficult decision anyone is going to have when they come to Slipaway is what to eat. The options are almost limitless,” he said.

The park is open seven days a week, with the marina opening at 8 a.m., the bar opening at 10 a.m. and the food trucks opening at 11 a.m. The park closes at 10 p.m.

Aubuchon encourages everyone to try the park for themselves, as they will become a huge fan.

“The first few weeks we are going to learn how people interact with Slipaway,” he said.

There is an assumption that some boaters will come for the day, while others may stop for a bite to eat before going out for the day. Others who come by car may come

for a bite to eat and leave, while others may enjoy the live entertainment that will be offered seven days a week.

“We fully expect some people to make a day of it, and some are going to come for an hour or two,” Aubuchon said.

The owners have already taken some steps to alleviate parking. He said they have leased an offsite parking area for all staff, so all parking remains available for customers.

“We try to keep our entire parking lot available to customers. If we get to a point that we cannot accommodate all of our customers, we have contingency plans to have some additional parking – whether a shuttle service, or water taxi. We are going to evaluate that as time goes on,” Aubuchon said.

Jacobs, a volunteer for PRIDE Cape Coral, donated five hours of volunteer time on behalf of the organization.

She said she will definitely volunteer again next summer.

Red, White & BOOM!’s bright fireworks illuminated the night sky beginning right at 9:30 p.m. with accompanying music provided from the stage and by Cat Country 107.1.

“When the fireworks started, they were just right there. Right in front of me. The show was magnificent,” Jacobs said.

The sound of canons reverberated across

the landmark bridge, sprinkling color over the dark skies.

Thousands gathered on each side of the empty bridge for a stunning show with the ticked VIP tent catered by Mission BBQ and Budweiser offering not only food but seating near water’s edge called “The Boom Zone.”

Despite the rainy lead-in, the city was happy the event went off as scheduled.

“We were extremely grateful that the weather cooperated for this year’s Red, White & BOOM!,” said city spokesperson Melissa Mickey Monday morning. “Our Special Events team closely monitors the forecast leading up to the event, but there’s nothing like seeing the community come together under clear skies. It made for a safe and memorable night for everyone.”
