Petition organizers fail to collect enough signatures in Mayor Gunter recall effort

A recall effort to remove Cape Coral Mayor John Gunter ended this week after organizers did not gather enough signatures to move their effort forward.

The recall was organized by Kyle L’Hommedieu, of the Take Out the Trash

City of Fort Myers to hold community walk for PTSD awareness Friday In recognition of PTSD Awareness Day this Friday, June 27, the city of Fort Myers invites residents, visitors and community partners to attend a wellness and trauma recovery presentation in City Hall Council Chambers followed by a 1.1-mile walk throughout downtown Fort Myers.

As part of the program, which runs from 8-9 a.m. Friday, health and well-being advocate Christin Collins will join city of Fort Myers Fire Chief Tracy McMillion to share insights on how trauma affects individuals, families and first responders and how community connection can be a powerful tool for healing.

This event offers an opportunity to stand in solidarity with those impacted by PTSD, helping to foster greater awareness, empathy and support.

The event is free and open to the public.

Committee of Cape Coral.

In Florida, the recall process requires organizers to first collect signatures from 10% of the electorate to start the multi-step process for removal from office.

Organizers collected 3,867 votes from among the city’s the 139,371 registered voters, which L’Hommedieu said was a pathetic number.

“We didn’t expect the fear of retaliation from so many people. I can’t imagine there aren’t 7,000 angry people in this community. It was very disheartening but shows we have a bigger problem,” L’Hommedieu said.

On June 16 — World Sea Turtle Day — the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife officially broke ground on its Harkey Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Complex at its campus on Sanibel.

A ceremony marked the major milestone in marine wildlife conservation for the region.

“Today marks an important step forward for CROW and for sea turtle conservation in Southwest Florida,” Executive Director Alison Charney Hussey said. “The Harkey Sea Turtle Complex will allow us to care for more sea turtles with greater efficiency and expertise, while also expanding our capacity for research and education.”

The state-of-the-art facility will replace the original sea turtle rehabilitation center, which was destroyed by Hurricane Ian in 2022. It will feature advanced medical equipment, custom-designed rehabilitation tanks and expanded research space to care for sick and injured sea turtles.

Once completed, the Harkey Sea Turtle Complex will be the only licensed sea turtle rehabilitation facility between Sarasota and the Keys, serving as a vital hub for

Broadway Palm and Collaboratory showcasing Lovegrove’s artwork

Percentage of sales to be donated to foundation to support arts

Broadway Palm and Collaboratory have partnered to honor Southwest Florida artist Leoma Lovegrove to further her impact and legacy.

Patrons and guests at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre can do the same.

Lovegrove’s artwork will be on display at the Broadway Palm throughout the summer and fall of 2025. The exhibit will run through Nov. 15 with the completion of the show, “Pretty Women the Musical.”

Guests can purchase pieces from the collection. Lovegrove’s family will donate 10% of all sales to the Leoma Lovegrove Foundation Fund. The fund was established by her family at the Collaboratory to support the arts.

“I think it’s a win-win for everyone,” said Maureen Green-Prather, president of Broadway Palm. “People can buy her artwork, and a portion of the proceeds goes to her foundation. Her art bursts with happiness and that’s what we need right now.”

Lovegrove, who passed away in April, expressed her art and lived her life in full color. Lovegrove’s pieces often drew inspiration from the lush landscape and wildlife of Florida, where she established her artistic base on Matlacha Island.

Broadway Palm will feature about 20 pieces of her work at a price range of $95 to $800.

“We want people to support a legacy for her – to keep that spirit of her work alive any way we can,” said Dawn Belamarich, Collaboratory president and CEO.

Lovegrove’s artwork was featured in galleries and exhibitions worldwide. Her work attracted a devoted following of collectors and art enthusiasts who were drawn to her dynamic use of color and texture. She also collaborated with major brands, bringing her artistry to products in home decor, fashion and more.

Lovegrove left a vibrant mark on the art world, celebrated by her unmistakable spirit and indelible body of work.

Mussels drop series finale with Lakeland, 8-4

FORT MYERS - The Fort Myers Mighty Mussels lost 8-4 to the Lakeland Flying Tigers in the series finale on Sunday at Hammond Stadium.

Fort Myers’ (29-38, 2-1) starter Eli Jones worked in and out of trouble across the first two innings of his outing. Lakeland (39-28, 1-2) loaded the bases with nobody out in the first and Jones limited the damage to just one run. He then worked around a pair of base runners in the second to put a zero on the scoreboard.

In the bottom of the second, the Mussels’ Damuery Pena laced a leadoff single to center. A Lakeland error moved him into scoring position. Two batters later, Blaze O’Saben shot an opposite field single to right field to get the Mussels on the board and tie the game 1-1.

Jones wasn’t able to escape trouble in the fourth inning though, as the first three batters of the inning all recorded base hits. He issued a walk to Woody Hadeen before giving way to Tyler Stasiowski.

The Flying Tigers plated three runs in the frame, all of which were charged to Jones and took a 4-1 lead. He finished the day going three-plus innings, allowing four earned runs on seven hits, while striking out three.

Still trailing by that score in the sixth, Billy Amick poked a leadoff single through the right side of the infield. Dameury Pena followed with an opposite field single of his own and Caleb McNeely worked a walk to load the bases with nobody out. Miguel Briceno brought a run home on a ground out to make it 4-2. O’Saben followed with a two-run double to right-center, tying the game 4-4. The knock marked his first three-hit game as a Mussel.

Lakeland regained the lead an inning later, as Ricardo Hurtado singled off Mussels’ reliever Josh Bortka (0-2) to drive in Carson Rucker and give the Flying Tigers a 5-4 advantage.

In the eighth, Lakeland tagged Bortka for three more runs, extending their lead to 8-4.

Brennan Oxford got the final out of the eighth, before tossing a scoreless ninth inning.

After an off day Monday, Fort Myers travelled to Tampa to take on the Tarpons for a six-game series.

Due to the Tarpons playing on the back fields of the complex, there will be limited coverage of the series, with only live stats available. The next broadcast on the Mighty Mussels Baseball Network will be Tuesday, July 1, when the Fort Myers visits Bradenton.

Tommy Bohanon Foundation holds annual youth football clinic

In the nine years the Tommy Bohanon Foundation has held its annual football clinic, nothing has been able to stop it. Not rain or even a pandemic.

And so it was on Saturday that a record number of kids came to North Fort Myers High School’s Moody Field for a chance to train like a pro at the foundation’s signature event of the year.

Youths entering the first through eighth grades came to do agility drills, catch the football, hit blocking dummies and do the same things college and pro athletes do to get ready for action.

Bohanon said that the camp is a way for the kids to have fun and maybe learn a thing or two about the game.

“They get to come out and act like the pros. Every drill we do is done at every training camp. It’s a lot of fun and the kids get lunch and the sheriff’s office brings the ice cream,” Bohanon said. “It’s just a fun day.”

Bohanon brought a slew of coaches and volunteers to help out. Many were local coaches and friends who helped Bohanon as a player. Among them was Kristoffer Doura, who played for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins. He said he wanted to give back and help a fellow former pro.

2025 Florida Python Challenge to be held July 11-20

In just a few short weeks, the 2025 Florida Python Challenge kicks off, giving participants the opportunity to raise awareness about invasive species, help protect native wildlife and win their share of $25,000 in prizes by removing invasive Burmese pythons from the Everglades ecosystem. This year’s competition features the addition of Everglades National Park as one of eight official Florida Python Challenge locations.

The 10-day competition, running from July 11-20 and hosted by the Florida Fish and Wildlife

Conservation Commission and the South Florida Water Management District, features an Ultimate Grand Prize of $10,000 for the registered participant who removes the most pythons.

Competition participants also have the opportunity to win other cash prizes for most and longest pythons removed in three different categories, including novice, professional and military categories. Visit FLPythonChallenge.org to register for the competition and take the required online training.

“I’m here in the community and wanted to give back and show these kids we can help them get to the next level,” said Doura, who nearly died in training camp in 2011 before walking away from the sport. “I’m working with the offensive linemen on technique, hand placement, kick slides and things to make them angrier on the field.”

The kids came ready to work under the hot Florida sun. Jesse Swann, 11, plays Pop Warner for the Red Knights. He said it was a great opportunity to learn the game from someone who played at the highest level.

“I want to be a defensive lineman and try to advance my football career,” said

Secretary of State Byrd announces photo donation drive

State Archives of Florida is adding a new ‘Weather, Disaster and Recovery’ collection

TALLAHASSEE - Florida Secretary of State Cord Byrd announced Friday that the State Archives of Florida is seeking photographs for its newest photographic collection, “Weather, Disaster and Recovery.”

“By donating your photos for this new collection, you can help document and preserve the history of your community and fill historical gaps in the State Archives’ collections,” said Byrd. “Consider contributing to Florida’s history by donating your photographs.”

Email the State Archives of Florida at Floridamemory@dos.fl.gov to discuss donating your original photographs featuring weather events, disasters and recovery efforts.

Here is more specific information about the donation process:.

I have older, print photographs or negatives. Are you interested in those?

Yes. The Florida Photographic Collection contains more than a million prints and negatives from Florida history, and we continue to accept these formats alongside contemporary digital photographs. Can I donate photographs taken with my phone?

If you took the photograph yourself, probably. The camera on your mobile device likely produces images of high enough quality to meet our minimum requirements. Most modern devices, including iPhones (4 and newer), iPads (3 and newer), and many Android devices by Samsung, Motorola and Sony take photographs at or above our minimum resolution of 5 megapixels. Check your phone’s specifications to verify that it provides the appropriate quality for images

How do I donate my digital photographs?

We can process digital donations remotely via email. Send all photos as attachments to the Archives by email at Floridamemory@dos.fl.gov.

What happens after I send my photos?

After you email us, we will send you a Deed of Gift form to fill out and email back to us. All donors must sign the form to transfer image ownership and usage rights to the State Archives of Florida. This ensures that you and others will be able to access and use the image now and in the future. The State Archives will credit the photographer in collection records and when the image is accessed by researchers.

What are the digital photograph specifications?

n File Format: TIFF and RAW preferred. JPEG accepted.

n Megapixel: Minimum 5MP Will my photos be put on Florida

Memory?

It is possible, but not all photographs donated to the State Archives of Florida appear on Florida Memory. They will still be included in the Florida Photographic Collection at the State Archives of Florida and accessible to researchers.

Swann, who was a first-time camper. “I think I’m going to get a lot of exercise and good training. Anything an average football player would need.”

Not much has changed regarding the clinic. One thing that has is that, unlike the beginning when you can count the number of girls on one hand, there were about 20 girls participating this year.

A lot of girls have begun playing flag football (with a few playing tackle) at the high school level as well as at the youth level.

Alexa Laurenti, 12, was there with her brothers with the intent on getting better at the sport.

“I want to start playing flag football. My older sister plays tackle football at Cape Youth. I want to learn tackling so I can play with my brothers and get better at the drills,” Laurenti said.

Katie Bohanon said the more than 250 kids

and 50 junior coaches made the camp another exciting event, an event that was the impetus of how the foundation got started.

“This is how the foundation got started. We just wanted to do a free football camp for kids in the community,” Bohanon said. “Nobody was really doing it, so it was a way to bring people in from the community. We have never missed a year and are committed to help the kids in Southwest Florida.”

The Tommy Bohanon Foundation is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting young athletes reach their highest potential. The foundation funds annual scholarships, sports equipment grants to local high schools, seminars and programs, as well as funding for other local nonprofits. Since its inception in 2017 the foundation has raised over $1 million. For more information visit https://tommybohanonfoundation.org/

Recall: Mayor recall petition effort falls short with too few signatures

From page 1

thing illegal or unethical in his government role.

“I know I have not done anything illegal in the seven and a half years I have sat here,” Gunter said.

Gunter encouraged anyone who thought he had done something illegal, or unethical, to go to the State Attorney’s Office or the State Commission on Ethics and file a complaint.

The recall petition had listed two allegations it claimed were grounds for recall.

The first statement of grounds alleged that Gunter had violated Florida Statute 112.311 (6) because he “repeatedly voted against the people.”

The second statement of grounds cited Florida Statue 286.011.

“On March 25, 2025, John Gunter intended to violate Florida’s Sunshine Law insisting members of the public were not

welcome at a public meeting telling Councilmember (Rachel) Kaduk ‘this isn’t bring your friends to work day’ and Kaduk relayed that ‘the mayor doesn’t want you in our meeting.’”

Grounds for recall are limited to those defined by state statute:

Grounds for recall - The grounds for removal of elected municipal officials shall, for the purposes of this act, be limited to the following and must be contained in the petition:

1. Malfeasance; 2. Misfeasance; 3. Neglect of duty; 4. Drunkenness; 5. Incompetence;

moral turpitude.

Statute 100.361 also dictates the petition process.

Petitions must contain the name of the person sought to be recalled and a 200-word statement, maximum, as to the legal grounds for recall limited solely to those specified in the statute.

The process also requires two petition drives.

The first requires 10% of the city’s electorate to sign petitions, while the second includes an opportunity for the subject of the recall to challenge the alleged grounds. A second round of petitions then follows, requiring signatures from 15% of the registered voters.

There is a window 30 days after the date on which the first signature is obtained on the petition.

According social media posts regarding the recall effort, organizers listed a June 17 date for return of its petitions.

The city confirmed Thursday that the City Clerk’s Office had not received any such documents.

L’Hommedieu said the group will remain an active watchdog and that, through the collection of signatures, a lot of things were uncovered, which they are actively looking into.

“It did bring a lot of information to life. We found out a lot of stuff. I submitted a bunch of public record requests today,”

6. Permanent inability to perform official duties; and

7. Conviction of a felony involving

If enough the signatures are gathered, they are submitted to the City Clerk’s Office and then certified by the Lee County Supervisor of Elections.

L’Hommedieu said. “The team is not stopping – there is a lot more information to look into that has not been uncovered yet. We are going to continue to fight.”

rescue, rehabilitation and research.

“With threats such as habitat loss, marine debris, red tide and climate change on the rise, this facility is a critical step in strengthening sea turtle conservation along Florida’s Gulf Coast,” CROW shared.

The project is funded in part by a $1.2 million grant from the National Fish and

Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) and a gift from Bill and Laurie Harkey, longtime supporters of wildlife conservation.

“We’re incredibly grateful to the Harkeys, our project partners and our community for helping turn this vision into a reality,” Hussey said.

Holding the groundbreaking on World Sea Turtle Day made the occasion especially meaningful as CROW reaffirmed its

mission to protect and care for sea turtles across the region.

The ceremony featured remarks from Hussey and the Harkeys, as well as CROW Research and Medical Director Dr. Jessica Comolli and representatives from Colliers Development Services, Owen-AmesKimball and Joyce Owens Architecture, partners in the facility’s design and construction.

“This groundbreaking marked not only the beginning of construction, but a powerful commitment to the long-term protection and care of one of the region’s most iconic and vulnerable species,” CROW shared.
