The finances of the Town of Fort Myers Beach were so dire last September, that its general fund was down to about $ 2 2 , 0 0 0 , T o w

J o e Onzick said

On Monday, Onzick requested that the town council authorize the transfer of $3 085 million from the $11 9 million state bridge loan to replenish the town’s

general fund as a result of lost revenue last year due to the effects of Hurricane Ian

Onzick estimated that the town saw a loss of revenue in 2023 of approximately

$ 3 m i l l i o n c o m

e d t o 2 0 2 2 T

a t includes parking meter collections, mooring field revenue, short-term rental fees, sales tax revenue and other sources of income for the town.

“We have really depleted our general fund balance and (were) actually down to

the point where our cash balance was sitting at $22,000 from the general fund as of Sept 30,” Onzick said O n

a Department of Economic Opportunity confirmed that the loan will not be need to be repaid by June 30, as originally scheduled Onzick said existing legislation has extended the repayment for a three-year term There is also outstanding legislation that could lead to the loan repayment

The Fort Myers Beach Elementary

School was named as one of 11 public schools in the School District of Lee County designated by the state board of education as a School of Excellence for the 2022-23 school year

Schools are designated as a school as a School of Excellence if the school’s percentage of possible points earned in its school grade calculation is in the 80th percentile or higher for schools comprised of the same grade group

“Receiving the School of Excellence designation is a testament to all the former and current staff at Fort Myers Beach Elementary

School,” Principal Dr Traci Kohler said “It is truly a community award that celebrates the support of all stakeholders on the island that have given their time and talents to our scholars, our amazing students ”

In the 2022-23 school year, 783 schools throughout Florida were designated as a School of Excellence

“I am deeply grateful for the state’s recognition of these schools,” Lee County Schools Superintendent Dr Kenneth Savage said “It’s a testament to the dedication and hard work of our entire educational community Every school within our district shares in this honor, and it reflects the collective excellence of our principals, teachers, and students ”

The Fort Myers Beach Elementary School, which reopened in December after being damaged during Hurricane Ian, has been named a School of Excellence for the 2022-23 school year Most of the school’s classes were held at San Carlos Park Elementary School during that time PHOTO

being extended 10 years There is also the possibility the state legislature and Gov Ron DeSantis could act to forgive the loan

The town council voted unanimously to approve the transfer of $3,085,029 in funds from the bridge loan Council had already set aside $3 47 million from the bridge loan for its 2023-24 budget, which would leave $8 4 million still available from the bridge loan

Ask governor to veto HB 1645

HB 1645 Energy Resources was described by Sen Tina Polsky as “anti-technology, anti-innovation, pro-fossil fuel, proforeign fuel and pro-preemption” when the Senate version of the bill was being debated in committee The bill did not have unanimous support in either the House or the Senate, but it did pass and it was just sent to Gov Ron DeSantis’ desk for his consideration

Please join us in opposing this anti-clean energy bill by emailing the governor and asking him to veto this harmful bill

Among other things, the bill:

P

approving the placement of natural gas facilities

∫ Removes the current clean energy infrastructure goals in the state’s energy policy

Climate Protection Act which would eliminate Florida’s genuine renewable clean energy grant programs, while providing “cost recovery” for the natural gas industry (which will be billed to ratepayers)

∫ Removes certain pipeline certification

opportunities for public input on pipeline siting

More reasons to request veto

The legislation discourages state agencies and local governments from purchasing electric vehicles by striking the requirement that the most fuel-efficient models be selected

The bill also prohibits the construction,

operation or expansion of offshore wind energy facilities It also tells homeowners associations that they cannot prohibit certain types or fuel sources of energy production and appliances that use such fuels in their governing documents Mandates like these preempt self-governance and block innovations for developing cleaner and more efficient sources of energy

Moss Marina owners pull back land use change application

The owners of Moss Marina, who have been seeking a land use change for property at the marina and nearby to develop a multi-hotel development on Fort Myers Beach, have pulled back their application from a public hearing that had been scheduled for Monday, May 6

The Town of Fort Myers Beach made the announcement Sunday night regarding the project that includes Arches Bayfront as well as other commercial uses

The public hearing was concerning a land use amendment for the properties, which had been previously rejected by the town’s Local Planning Agency in April by a 4-2 vote over concerns that the development was too intense for the residential area around the commercial project

Town awards beach renourishment contract

The Town of Fort Myers Beach Council voted unanimously Monday to award the beach renourishment contract to Ahtnah Marine and Construction Company, of Boynton Beach

The company was the lowest bidder for the project, with a bid of $21 7 million for the work

The project will entail beach restoration to approximately 6 5 miles of what the town considers to be “critically eroded” beach The last beach restoration project took place in 2011.

Since Hurricane Ian, the town has embarked on two other projects related to addressing its eroded beaches, including an ongoing sand haul project and an emergency berm that was installed after Hurricane Ian

Fort Myers Beach Environmental Project Manager Chadd Chustz said the project will bring 949,000 cubic yards of new sand to the beach

Town of Fort Myers Beach Attorney Becky Vose said the town has received a notice of a bid protest and the town hasn’t yet received a bond

Vose said the project will go forward despite the protest due to the importance of the project before the onset of hurricane season “It’s legally sufficient to allow you to proceed in light of the protest,” Vose said

Lee County will provide 90% of the funds up front as part of an interlocal agreement which county commissioners approved Tuesday

Lee County spokesperson Timothy Engstrom said the county will ultimately fund $9 2 million of the project through the town’s tourist development tax

The north-central project segment will extend from Bowditch Point to near Lanark Avenue The south segment will extend from near Creciente Condominium to Sun Caper Condominium.

The Town has obtained funding from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) for 100% for the South Segment and 41 7% of the North-Central Segment, Engstrom said

NATHAN MAYBERG

The Town of Fort Myers Beach is set to begin on a new beach renourishment project in June which will bring 949,000 cubic yards of sand to replenish its beach

Chustz did not respond as of press time to questions regarding the town’s share of the funding for the project, or to clarify other sources of funding

The county’s contribution from the tax on short-term lodging is to offer storm protection for County beach parks

Breakfast with the U.S. Coast Guard

Get to know the missions of the U S Coast Guard and Auxiliary at a meet and greet breakfast Thursday, May 23 as part of National Safe Boating Week

While being a marvelous source of recreation, boating, to the unprepared, can be a risky sport Not knowing or obeying the Navigation Rules or the nautical “Rules of the Road,” drinking alcohol or taking drugs while operating a boat, or choosing not to wear your life jacket, are all examples of human error or a lack of proper judgment All too often this misjudgment turns into a Search and Rescue case.

Representatives from the Coast Guard and Auxiliary will be available to answer questions about search and rescue, our missions, facilities, training, and capabilities Register online at www Aux91FMB org/Breakfast

The Safe Boating Campaign is a worldwide effort focused on responsible boating led by the National Safe Boating Council with support from boating safety advocates around the world At its heart, the Safe Boating Campaign is a grassroots effort that collaborates with partners to share about safe boating in their local communities through events, social media, workshops, and more It is produced under a grant from the Sports Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund, administered by the U S Coast Guard National Safe Boating week is May 18-24

offering free vessel safety checks

The U S Coast Guard Auxiliary will be offering free vessel safety checks at Moss Marina on Fort Myers Beach Saturday, May 18 from 9 a m to noon

Moss Marina is located at 450 Court

The U S Coast Guard Auxiliary ensures that boats meet the highest standards for safety and regulatory compliance By undergoing a thorough safety check, boat owners can identify any potential issues or hazards that could compromise your safety on the water, allowing you to address them proactively

Whether it's verifying the integrity of your safety equipment, assessing your navigation lights, or confirming the general condition of your vessel, a safety check is a crucial step in safeguarding against accidents and ensuring smooth sailing ahead

The vessel safety check can prevent boat owners from being fined by local law enforcement while operating their boats on the water without the proper equipment

“We welcome the opportunity to inform boat owners on safe boating practices while checking their boat for potential problems,” said Robert Guenthner, the Flotilla Commander of the Fort Myers Beach Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla

"The Auxiliary does not issue citations for violations, but rather provide recommendations and insight on how to stay out of trouble. Boats that comply receive an annual VSC Decal which demonstrates their commitment to safe boating," Guenthner said

Moss Marina is hosting this important event as part of National Safe Boating Week National Safe Boating Week runs from May 18-24 This is an important annual campaign that aims to raise awareness about safe boating practices and the importance of wearing life jackets while boating

questions about how the critical wildlife area would be impacted

In early 2023, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection issued a Joint Coastal Permit and Submerged Lands Authorization, which expires in January 2038 The permit was modified to authorize a one-time placement of approximately 15,000 cubic yards of beach compatible material above the Mean High Water line on the southern end of Estero Island to offset

the observed storm loss in this section of the island, which has not been restored previously In addition, a second offshore burrow area was added to the project scope to provide ample sand resources for future renourishment projects, according to the town

The US Army Corps of Engineers permit for the beach renourishment project was issued in November

The work is expected to begin in June and be completed by the end of October

Allers said he filed paperwork last week Monday to run for a new four-year term Allers has served as the mayor since being appointed by the town council at a reorganization following the 2022 elections

“We have made great progress these

past several months, but we have a long road ahead, filled with more challenges, and tougher decisions,” Allers said in an election statement posted to Facebook

Allers cited efforts to work with state

Hurricane Ian “that allow us to re-establish fundamental town operations while w

efforts ”

Allers said a Florida Department of Economic Opportunity Bridge Loan of $11 9 million helped the town pay for “

through the next steps ” Unlike grants the town has received from the state for new lighting, stormwater projects and beach renourishment, the state hasn’t forgiven the loan

Safford, who manages vacation rentals in town and co-owned the Sea Gypsy Inn with wife Jacki Liszak, said “Hurricane Ian changed our lives forever and we are on the road to recovery That road, however, is going to be long and complicated In the next four years we have the unique opportunity to create an island community that will serve the generations to come ”

Safford said he is committed to working on a new strategic plan for the town, “focusing on sustainability, inclusion, safety, transportation and protection of our natural resources The plan must also be balanced, taking into account full time and seasonal residents, visitors and businesses ” Scasny, who runs a cybsersecurity

firm, announced his candidacy on his Facebook page

“We as residents need to decide if we want the island to be a place where people and families can still come and live, and will want to live, or if we will be an island of transients, with large hotels and shortterm rentals being the majority,” Scasny said “My choice is for the former, as the latter to me would be the end of the Town of Fort Myers Beach The Town exists because we have residents, so if we have no residents, we do not have the need for a Town ”

Scasny said that “allowing more density and intensity to projects should only come with a proportional benefit to the Town and its residents, not just benefits to developers and tourists ”

CROW camp registrati on opens

STAFF REPORT

The Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife has opened registration for its four-day camp weeks in June each week for children in second grade through 12th grade

As Lee County’s only licensed wildlife hospital, CROW’s mission of saving wildlife is accomplished, in part, through educating the next generation of wildlife professionals about its work helping sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife.

The CROW Wildlife Care Summer Camp combines critical thinking skills learned in a classroom with real world applications in the STEM field Participants can

expect to spend a day on CROW’s campus with the med-

Southwest Florida’s wildlife and observing demonstrations of medical procedures repairing and treating various injuries and illnesses.

Following these demonstrations, participants will engage in the unique opportunity to replicate similar procedures during their own dissection labs Second through fifth graders will not work on deceased specimens but will dissect owl pellets for the STEM session. The camp curriculum meets Florida’s Next Generation Science Standards, and all participants will be provided with and required to wear standard personal protection equipment

(PPE) throughout the day

The Royal Tern group (second through fifth grade) will take place on June 10 – 13 The second session Crow group (sixth through eighth grade) will take place on June 17 – 20. The final session Osprey group will take place on June 24 - 27

If you are interested in registering for CROW’s W i

Boating club to host hurricane preparedness seminar May 15

Each May the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration declares a National Hurricane Preparedness Week to remind us of all to get ready for the next storm If you are one of the many new boaters to Southwest Florida yet to experience the “rain with a name” you need to understand how to secure and prepare your vessel for these events

On Wednesday, May 15, the Cape Coral, Sail and Power Squadron, America’s Boating Club will host its annual hurricane preparedness seminar This year the event will be held at 2 p m at their building located at 917 S E 47th Terrace, Cape Coral The seminar is free and open to the public Seating is limited so attendees are asked to register in advance at h t t p s : / / w w w t i c k e t l e a p events/events/ccsaps

In the session they will discuss preparation basics and how you can apply those to your situation There is no “one size fits all solution” as several factors need to be considered when developing your plan Key to this is the physical location of your vessel and the direction that the storm is coming in from

In Southwest Florida, our storms come from the Atlantic but not all hurricanes

come across the state from the east The recent storms have approached us from the south and southwest Storms that pass us on the east side will impact our canals differently than those that pass us on the west side

With each new storm we experience something different, Hurricane Ian was devasting compared to other recent storms at has provided us with new insights So organizers say to be sure to plan to attend this event on May 15.

The Cape Coral Sail and Power Squadron also offers a variety of other boating classes and seminars throughout the year You can find the currently offered courses and seminars from now until the end of the year list online at ccsaps org

Offices are open, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 9 a m – noon Their volunteer staff will be happy to provide more information about course offering and you will also find other valuable boating information along with some items for sale, like local charts and books including, “Safe Boating in Southwest Florida, Your Guide to the Many Channels on our Waterways” written by one of the organization’s members
