POP CULTURE
After Sunset, We Glow When the sun goes down, a different kind of light takes over. Sabah is totally known for its sunsets. We talk about them all the time — the orange or sometimes purple sky, the sea turning gold, the kind of evening that makes everyone suddenly stopwhat they are doing just to take a picture. But once the sun disappears, the city does not exactly go dark. Instead, another kind of light starts to take over. A night drive around KK City will make you notice them almost immediately, giant LED screens glowing beside the road, sitting high above traffic, flashing from one image to another. During the day, they may look like just another billboard. But at night, they become much harder to ignore. They light up the road with faces, colours, events, fashion campaigns, food, promotions and whatever happens to be getting our attention at that moment. In a strange way, these screens have started to feel like part of the city itself. They do not only advertise things to us. They also show us what is happening around us. A concert coming to Sabah might suddenly appear across a giant screen. A new event, a local brand or a familiar personality can take over that same space the next day. Even if we are only looking for a few seconds while sitting in traffic, we still see it.
LED screen in KK
KK city street at night That is what makes LED screens interesting as part of Pop Culture. And that is why I am writing about this because never once did the LED screen fail to get me staring at those lightful screens along the KK city street! Usually, we think about the small ones in our hands our phones. But the giant screens beside our roads are doing something similar, just on a much bigger scale. They turn our everyday commute into a constantly changing display of what is popular. Interesting! I like the idea that these screens become a kind of “new light” for the road. Not necessarily because the city needs them to replace streetlights, but because they bring another layer of brightness and movement once darkness approaches. A road that may feel ordinary during the afternoon can suddenly look completely different when a massive LED screen starts glowing above it. There is also something very young about it. We are a generation that is used to seeing life through screens. We scroll, swipe, stream and screenshot almost everything. So perhaps it makes sense that our cities are starting to look a little more like our phones too bright, colourful, constantly updating and always trying to catch our attention.
Of course, not everyone will look at a giant LED screen and think deeply about it. Sometimes it is simply an advertisement you pass on the way home. And that is okay. The next time you are driving through Sabah after sunset, look up for a second. Once the natural light disappears, you might notice the city creating its own. And somewhere between the headlights, traffic and giant glowing screens, modern Sabah begins to look just a little different after dark. For someone who loves night drives around KK city, the colourful glow of LED screens somehow becomes part of the experience. Sometimes, an advertisement catches my attention for only a few seconds, but strangely, it stays in my mind even after I reach home. I find myself remembering the colours, the visuals, or even the little message I saw along the way. Maybe that is the beauty of LED screens at night, they do not just brighten the road, they leave behind small moments for us to carry home.

BEYOND VISIBILITY
H
ow Penjenamaan Canggih Sdn Bhd is building a smarter, more strategic digital advertising network from Sabah. As Sabah’s cities continue to grow, the way businesses compete for attention is changing with them. Traditional outdoor advertisements remain part of the urban landscape, but increasingly, bright and dynamic digital screens are transforming how brands communicate with people on the move. For Penjenamaan Canggih Sdn Bhd (PCSB), this transformation presents more than a business opportunity. It represents a chance to build an advertising network designed around visibility, technology and measurable value for businesses.
LOCATION BEFORE EXPANSION A large screen may be impressive, but without sufficient traffic, viewing time and the right audience surrounding it, size alone cannot guarantee impact. This is why PCSB places considerable emphasis on research before deciding where a billboard should be installed. “Our strongest advantage is location. Before installing any digital billboard, we conduct detailed surveys and research to ensure the site is truly strategic.” Rather than pursuing rapid expansion for the sake of having a large number of screens, the company currently maintains a more focused network of carefully selected locations. Particular attention is given to high-traffic areas and traffic light junctions, where motorists and passengers naturally have more opportunities to notice the content being displayed. It is a straightforward strategy built around one important question: will people actually see the advertisement?
KEEPING PACE WITH TECHNOLOGY The company actively follows developments in the wider industry and visits international fairs and expos, including those held in China. These visits provide opportunities to meet manufacturers, tour factories and speak directly with technology providers. “We believe in continuous learning and improvement. The DOOH industry moves quickly, so we make it a point to follow market trends and explore new technologies.” “For us, staying ahead is not only about buying new equipment; it is about understanding the full system behind reliable and effective digital advertising.” That distinction is important. New technology can attract attention, but reliability determines whether it can create long-term value.
WHEN VISIBILITY TURNS INTO RESULTS
The effectiveness of advertising can sometimes be difficult to appreciate until businesses experience the response themselves. One campaign in particular reinforced PCSB’s belief in the potential of DOOH advertising for local companies. After seeing the response generated by the campaign, the client decided to continue advertising with PCSB on a long-term basis.
GROWING RESPONSIBLY With more digital screens becoming part of the urban environment, expansion also comes with responsibility. Billboards operate within public spaces and are subject to government policies and local authority requirements. PCSB says compliance remains an important consideration whenever new locations are planned. PCSB continues to monitor developments in energy-efficient LED systems and alternative energy solutions, including solar power. While the company believes current solar technology is not yet fully suitable for its operational requirements, it sees considerable potential as the technology develops. Rather than adopting solutions simply for appearances, the company is taking a practical approach: monitoring progress, understanding what works and preparing to incorporate better solutions when they become viable. It reflects a wider principle behind PCSB’s development: expansion should be sustainable not only commercially, but operationally.
BUILT FOR THE SABAH MARKET Advertising that succeeds in one market does not automatically translate perfectly into another. Sabah has its own geography, cities, communities, traffic patterns and consumer behaviour. Understanding those differences forms an important part of PCSB’s approach. Instead of applying the same strategy everywhere, the company evaluates individual cities according to factors such as visibility, traffic flow and local audience habits. But understanding Sabah goes beyond where screens are positioned. It also means recognising the realities faced by the businesses operating here.
FROM SABAH TO A MALAYSIAN NETWORK The next chapter for PCSB is considerably bigger. Over the coming three to five years, the company has set itself a clear target: to establish at least one digital billboard in every major city across Sabah. It is an ambitious goal, but also a natural progression for a company that wants to build a connected advertising network across the state. From there, its ambitions cross the border. Once sufficient coverage has been established throughout Sabah, PCSB hopes to expand into Sarawak before eventually establishing a presence in Peninsular Malaysia. The objective, however, is not to place and capable of delivering meaningful exposure to screens everywhere as quickly as possible. PCSB wants each the businesses investing in them. From carefully stage of expansion to follow the same principles that shaped researched locations in Sabah to international its earlier growth: carefully chosen locations, regulatory technology fairs and an eventual nationwide network, compliance, reliable technology, strong service and tangible PCSB is building its ambitions one strategic location value for advertisers. And as its screens continue to illuminate at a time. And as its screens continue to illuminate more cities, the company’s direction remains clear: make more cities, the company’s direction remains clear: every location count, make every advertisement visible, and make every location count, make every advertisement make every ringgit invested work harder.right technology visible, and make every ringgit invested work harder.

A Ballad of Longing Left Unspoken
Lumangad Oku Dika
There are emotions that can be spoken freely, and then there are those that remain hidden, quietly carried in the heart. Lumangad Oku Dika by Ryenald Guntabid captures the latter: a deeply personal feeling of longing for someone special, made more poignant by the inability to express it. The title Lumangad Oku Dika comes from the Dusun language and translates to I miss you. Simple yet emotionally powerful, the phrase reflects the heart of the song: an intense longing for someone who holds a special place in one’s life. Written, composed and performed by Ryenald Guntabid, the song explores a situation many listeners may find familiar. It is about having feelings for someone who means more than words can explain, yet choosing to keep those emotions hidden. At the centre of the song is a delicate conflict between *love and friendship*. The person behind the inspiration is someone deeply meaningful to the singer, but expressing his true feelings carries a risk. What if being honest changes everything? What if revealing those emotions damages a friendship that is already precious? Rather than taking that chance, the feelings remain unspoken.
WHEN MUSIC SAYS WHAT WORDS CANNOT This is where Lumangad Oku Dika becomes more than simply a song about missing someone. It becomes an emotional outlet for everything that cannot be said face to face. Through its slow ballad style, the song allows those emotions to unfold naturally. Its gentle and sentimental character complements the story, giving listeners space to absorb the meaning behind every emotion conveyed. The beauty of the song lies in its simplicity. It does not need an overly complicated story to make an impact. Its strength comes from an honest human experience, missing someone deeply while knowing that saying “I miss you” could change the relationship forever. For Ryenald, music becomes the place where those hidden feelings can finally exist openly. What cannot be communicated directly to that special person can instead be expressed through melody and lyrics.
A SONG ROOTED IN LANGUAGE AND EMOTION The use of the Dusun language in the title also gives Lumangad Oku Dika a distinctive cultural identity. While the emotions explored in the song are universal, its title connects that experience of longing with the language and cultural roots of Sabah. That combination gives the song a special character. Even listeners from different backgrounds can understand its emotional message because longing, affection and the fear of losing someone important are feelings that transcend language.

RV Tan Kah Kee: Where Ocean Science Meets Sustainablity
Photo from: Xiamen University, RV Tan Kah Kee Born from a century-long dream of ocean exploration, the Research Vessel Tan Kah Kee (R/V TKK) marks an important milestone in China’s marine research. Construction began in March 2015, followed by its launch and official naming in May 2016. By April 2017, it was formally delivered and put into service as one of China’s most advanced and versatile research vessels. Named in memory of Mr. Tan Kah Kee, the renowned patriotic overseas Chinese leader and founder of Xiamen University (XMU) in 1921, the vessel fulfils a century long aspiration of XMU’s oceanographic community taking its legacy from the shore into the ocean through science, exploration and marine research. This year’s visit was especially significant, coinciding with the 80th Anniversary of Marine Sciences at Xiamen University and the 10th Anniversary of Xiamen University Malaysia.
Info by: Xiamen University, RV Tan Kah Kee The Breeze team had the opportunity to tour the vessel during the R/V Tan Kah Kee Open Day 2026, which commenced in Kota Kinabalu on 7 August. The event welcomed the public aboard XMU’s oceanographic research vessel and formed part of the XMU @ Sea Programme, offering undergraduate students worldwide immersive experiences in oceanographic research, scientific exploration and cultural exchange. On board, the team explored its research facilities, learned about marine science and ocean exploration, and interacted with researchers and students. Beyond scientific discovery, R/V Tan Kah Kee contributes to understanding and protecting our oceans. Through marine observation, environmental monitoring and oceanographic research, it provides valuable insights into changing marine ecosystems, climate patterns and ocean health. As environmental challenges grow, R/V Tan Kah Kee reminds us that ocean exploration is not only about discovering what lies beneath, but also understanding how we can protect it for generations to come.

K𝐎𝐎𝐓𝐓𝐀𝐀 𝐊𝐊𝐈𝐈𝐍𝐍𝐀𝐀𝐁𝐁𝐀𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐔𝐔- Preparations are now in their final stages for the 30 Years Tribute to Trans Borneo 2026, an international overland expedition commemorating the legendary 1996 Trans Borneo Expedition while showcasing Sabah's growing role as an international gateway through the emerging Serudong– Simanggaris border crossing. Organised by Indonesia 4x4 Overland with the support of Borneo Overland Expeditions Sdn. Bhd., the expedition will see 41 participants from Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam travelling in 17 expedition vehicles over approximately 3,000 kilometres across Borneo during a 17-day journey from Pontianak, West Kalimantan, beginning on Aug 17 in conjunction with Indonesia's Independence Day, before concluding in Kota Kinabalu on Aug 31 to coincide with Malaysia's National Day celebrations. More than a commemorative drive, the expedition celebrates three decades of friendship, adventure, cultural exchange and regional cooperation while paying tribute to the pioneering vision of Trans Borneo founders Annuar Ghani of Malaysia and Harry Sanusi of Indonesia, whose landmark expedition in 1996 demonstrated the potential of overland tourism to unite communities across borders.
The event also highlights the strategic importance of the proposed Serudong Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex, expected to become Sabah's first permanent international land border crossing with Indonesia upon completion, enhancing regional connectivity, tourism, trade and investment under the BIMP-EAGA framework. Director of Borneo Overland Expeditions Sdn. Bhd., John Kong, described the expedition as both a celebration of an extraordinary legacy and a symbol of Borneo's increasingly connected future, expressing hope that stronger tourism links between Malaysia and Indonesia would further promote sustainable overland travel and people-topeople ties across the region.

PERSONALITY
“I noticed that digital billboards were already common in many other cities, but they were still not widely available here,” he recalls. “That gap sparked my interest.”
Tee Wah Feng THE FUTURE FACE OF DIGITAL
Sometimes, a business idea begins not in a boardroom, but with a simple observation. During the Movement Control Order (MCO), the founder of Penjenamaan Canggih Sdn Bhd (PCSB) began thinking about new opportunities that could be introduced to his hometown of Tawau. Digital billboards were already common in many cities, yet the concept remained relatively uncommon in Tawau. Where others saw a difference, he saw an opportunity. That observation became the foundation of PCSB, with an ambition to make digital outdoor advertising more accessible and professional while giving Sabah businesses a powerful platform to be seen.
MORE THAN A SCREEN For PCSB, digital billboards are more than advertising screens. Their value lies in helping businesses gain attention, exposure and results. “When a client advertises with us and sees stronger brand exposure, more enquiries, or better sales, it gives me a real sense of fulfilment.” Each screen represents visibility, confidence and progress for local businesses while contributing to Sabah’s changing visual landscape. “Seeing our billboards light up the city also reminds me that Sabah is moving forward, and I am proud that PCSB can play a small part in shaping that visual landscape.”
BUSINESS IS STILL ABOUT PEOPLE
Despite working in a technology driven industry, he believes business ultimately comes back to people. For him, sincerity, trust and genuine relationships can create opportunities while building something even more valuable: reputation. “Business is not only about profit; it is also about trust, reputation, and the relationships we build along the way.”
A VISION BIGGER THAN BILLBOARDS Looking ahead, PCSB aims to become one of Sabah’s most trusted advertising companies while expanding beyond the state. “Beyond business success, I hope PCSB can become a platform that helps more businesses in Sabah be seen.” The vision is to make advertising more accessible, giving local SMEs the opportunity to gain exposure and compete with larger businesses. “Advertising should not only be something large corporations can afford.” Ultimately, PCSB hopes to help more Sabah businesses be seen, remembered and grow.
THE MINDSET BEHIND THE BUSINESS Behind PCSB is a simple philosophy: keep going. The founder believes challenges will always arise, but another solution can often be found through persistence. “When problems arise, I always encourage my team to focus on solutions rather than excuses.” It is a mindset built around trying, learning and adapting alongside another important principle: build relationships, not enemies.
FINDING INSPIRATION BEYOND SABAH Travelling gives him a chance to reset and experience different cities, cultures and ways of doing business often bringing fresh ideas back home. “Sometimes, stepping away from the daily routine helps me return with a clearer mind and a wider vision for both myself and the company.” For him, sometimes growth simply begins by seeing things from a different perspective.

BEAUTY
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
LED lighting not just as illumination, but as a factor that can change how makeup is perceived on camera and in person. Makeup is designed to enhance the beauty, but the final result is not determined by makeup only. Lighting plays a major role in how makeup looks, especially when lighting is used for photography, film, events, or professional beauty work. LED lights can change the way we perceive skin tone, foundation, texture, colour and overall complexion. This is why makeup that looks beautiful under one type of lighting may appear completely different under another.
1. Colour Temperature Can Change the Appearance of Makeup LED lights range from warm yellow to cool bluish tones. Warm lighting can make skin appear more golden or darker, while cool lighting can make it look paler or bluish and highlight redness or dark circles. Choosing the right lighting is important for accurate foundation and concealer matching. 2. CRI Affects Colour Accuracy CRI (Colour Rendering Index) shows how accurately colours appear under a light source. High-CRI LEDs provide more accurate skin and makeup colours, while low-quality lighting may distort foundation, blush, lipstick and eyeshadow. 3. LED Lighting Can Reveal Skin Texture Strong, direct LED lighting can emphasise fine lines, dry patches, acne, pores and uneven foundation. Soft, diffused lighting creates a smoother appearance and reduces visible texture, especially on camera.
4. Excessive Light Can Affect Foundation Very bright LED lighting can make foundation appear lighter and may lead to overapplication of foundation, concealer or powder. Makeup may look flawless under bright lights but heavy or cakey in natural light.
5. LED Lighting and Shimmer or Highlighter Direct LED lighting can make highlighter, glitter and metallic eyeshadow appear stronger or excessively shiny. Makeup artists need to balance glow and shine, especially for camera work. 6. Different LED Setups Produce Different Results Front lighting creates a softer, even look, while side lighting highlights contours and texture. Makeup should be checked under the actual lighting where it will be seen. 7. The Best Practice for Makeup Artists Makeup artists should not rely on one lighting source. Makeup should be checked under colour-accurate LED lighting and the actual environment

DAYPARTY: Bringing a New Rhythm to |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| Sabah’s Lifestyle Scene
Organised by 6un9a, the idea behind DAYPARTY began with a simple ambition: to create something Sabah had not experienced before. Inspired by the growing day-party culture around the world, the organisers saw an opportunity to bring the concept to Kota Kinabalu while giving it a distinctly local identity. Rather than waiting until nightfall, DAYPARTY embraces the best of Sabah during the day — from its celebrated sunsets and local food to music and the opportunity to connect with people in a relaxed social setting. What sets DAYPARTY apart is its emphasis on being experience-driven rather than simply party-driven. Music is only one part of the equation. Food, cocktails, lifestyle brands, wellness elements and social experiences are brought together to create an environment that feels distinctly different from a conventional club event. Collaborations with local and international DJs, live entertainment, brand partners and vendors added to the experience, but it was the response from the community that left the strongest impression on the organisers. For 6un9a, that response delivered an encouraging message: Sabah is ready for something new. The sun may set, but for DAYPARTY, this is only the beginning.

RECIPE/KEDAI KUPI REVIEW

Quick Chicken Pasta Meal What you need:
This month, we are sharing with you a quick pasta meal that is instant as making our local “instant noodle” dish.
Ingredients that you will need:
Pasta of your choice (we used elbow macaroni) One packet of instant cup of soup Frozen mixed veggies Chicken Tenders/fingers/strips (your choice) Milk Butter As the air frying of the chicken will take the longest, start with that first. Put as many chicken strips into your air fryer and cook them as per the pre-set timer of your air fryer. We used one by La Gourmet as the Glass pot allows you to see the food cooking and you can turn it off when the chicken cooks to your desired level of crispy-ness. While this is cooking, you can prepare the pasta. La Gourmet Air Fryer Sauce Pan Whisk, cooking spoon/spatula
Boil your pasta with the frozen mixed veggies, drain when the pasta and veggies are soft. Heat up the cup of soup powder with a cup of milk and spoonful of butter, when the butter has mixed with the milk and soup, add the pasta/mixed veggies together and stir until all the pasta is fully covered by the soup mix. Next, put it on your plate and place the air fried chicken strips on top. Viola! Lunch/Dinner is done.

Kedai Kupi Review at Boya Nanyang Kopitiam
The Breeze team recently enjoyed a delightful high tea at Boya Nanyang Kopitiam, located across from Suria Sabah Shopping Mall. We had the chance to try a selection of Boya Dimsum, and every bite was surprisingly good, warm, flavourful, and perfect for an afternoon treat. Beyond dim sum, the kopitiam also offers a variety of hearty meals and freshly baked breads, making it a great spot whether you’re stopping by for high tea or craving something more filling. For dim sum lovers, Boya is definitely one of those recommended spots worth checking out. Each dim sum is freshly steamed, giving it that soft, warm and comforting texture that makes every bite enjoyable. From the different fillings to the variety of choices served, there is something exciting to try on the table. A cosy spot, freshly steamed dim sum and plenty of choices; Boya Nanyang Kopitiam is certainly one to add to your next kedai kupi stop. BOYA NANYANG KOPITIAM LOCATION
