THE WORLD CONTINUES TO TURN WITH MORE ANXIETY

ast year’s edition spoke of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, now entering its fourth year, but the world’s trouble spots, including heightned conflict in the Middle East, have been temporarily relegated from front page news thanks to the chaos being perpetuated by the USA’s newly relected president. Tariffs, deportations, continuing to embrace fossil fuels, and an executive decision to rescind the ban on plastic drinking straws that are polluting the world’s oceans and damaging wildlife. The world appears to be entering what might be called a ‘revenge’ era, with political edicts and financial instabilities that will impact industries, large and small, and lifestyle at every level of society. Once again, the sport horse breeding world may appear far removed from global events, but foals are still being born, young horses are being prepared, competition horses continue to accumulate air and road miles to attend major events. Little has changed in that respect – although there are a few recent decisions by the FEI that could well impact rankings. Not least, the introduction of the Longines League of Nations series, at which Rolex testimonees (including riders in the top 10 of the world rankings) have declined to participate... A watchmakers’ war! Auctions are also experiencing an evolution – or some might say, a revolution. Previously organized seasonally by the majority of studbooks, many have become monthly fixtures on event calendars. Live, ‘onlive’, hybrid – new vocabulary to suit every model of auction, in the same way that new reproductive technology has entered the 21st century dictionaries of sport horse breeding. Certainly, controversies still abound as to whether ICSI is legitimate or unnecessary, and how it might impact genetic diversity in the decades to come. Over the past year, BN has tried to

put welfare at the forefront of peoples’ minds in terms of publishing various articles that investigate and report the true meaning of welfare. Does a horse spending 23 hours of every day in a stable constitute good welfare? I don’t think so! Despite the issues facing the global family of sport horse breeders, we hope you will see this BREEDING NEWS WORLDWIDE SPORT HORSE STALLION DIRECTORY, as a familiar and honest friend that continues to be an invaluable addition to every breeders’ toolbox. It’s our 13th edition – the 30th anniversary of the birth of Breeding News at the end of this year – that we have published this directory, now exclusively online and completely free of charge! It represents the only ‘global’ database uniquely for stallions that is ‘live’ 365 days a year. As always, it offers self management of entries by stallion owners and representatives who can independently add/update information, making it even more accurate and efficient. From 4,000 stallions recorded in the Directory’s first year, to nearly 11,000 curated entries in 2026. We strive to continuously improve to better inform you, the breeders. This is why, for the 17th year in a row, the WBFSH is supporting our initiative. This renowned Federation’s logo on our front cover is our motivation, our encouragement. The breeder who owns one stallion is as important as one who owns 20 or more. By cross-referencing every stallion entry (where the owner is known), our Directory database has become a valuable ‘interactive’ source. This is why it is unique, and why the searchable online database provides the ability to sort stallions by specified criteria. Power at your fingertips, although when contact information is minimal or unrecorded so a vital link is lost.

and is maintained year-round to reflect the upto-date information provided to us by studbooks, stud farms, and individual breeders. Our ongoing thanks to them for their involvement and continued support. This year, the stallions and contacts appear online as a unique interactive database, where owners can self manage their stallions, adding and updating information. A major step forward for breeding in a world where technology is an essential tool.

PART I: THE STALLION LIST • Life number: The majority of studbooks have now fully adopted the unique life numbers which are essential for accurately tracking horses, and are fundamental to recognizing horses that become superstars in their particular sporting discipline. • Year of birth and pedigree: Virtually 100% • Size and colour: Included in the database where provided by studbooks. • Breeder, studbook of origin: Yes, even after all this time, it’s frustrating that some studbooks and independent studfarms still fail to acknowledge or publish breeder names – which is somewhat schocking when they would undoubtedly wish this for themselves. So, dear breeders, please take pride in your role and honour the accomplishments of others by sharing this information with us and the rest of the world. Breeders are the most important component in this project, alongside the stallions themselves. • Approval studbooks: A unique aspect of our Directory, as an increasing number of ‘star’ stallions are regularly approved by more than one studbook, even if they are not recognized by their own birth studbook. Ironic!

DIAMANT DE SEMILLY – A ‘LEGEND’ BY ANY OTHER NAME

he mark of a legendary sire is not necessarily his competitive career and breeding status during his lifetime, but often his postmortem popularity. In Diamant de Semilly’s case, following his death in 2023, he is retaining a healthy lead ahead of his nearest rival, Cornet Obolensky. Ironically, last year we considered whether two of the greatest Selle Français sires Diamant de Semilly of the modern era might dominate this Sires of Sires leaderboard, but Quidam de Revel lost ground during the past year, leaving him in Cornet’s wake, and unlikely to now fulfill an ambtious SF double. A few short years ago, we also questioned whether, “the days of Diamant’s domination might be numbered, given the sudden rise of Cornet”, but breeders have continued to demonstrate their ongoing loyalty to Diamant – one of the greatest Selle Français stalwarts of sport horse breeding. In fact, unless Diamant offspring start dropping like flies in the next few years, his lead is virtually unassailable for the foreseeable future. Long live Diamant. Few other sires have made notable inroads this past breeding season, although Casall has now moved into fifth place having added seven sires to his name, from 86 to 93, moving ever closer to Sandro Hit who appears to have plateaued on 99. It should be noted that Carthago/Carthago Z has moved up from 21st to 14 , with the addition of 17 sires, but we are obligated to point out that this apparent ‘leap’ th

addressed a previous anomaly in terms of his foal registrations under both Carthago and Carthago Z, which have henceforth been amalgamated. Meanwhile, For Pleasure’s surge in popularity has also remained static this past year, although he remains in 10th place. Heartbreaker has lost some ground, dropping from =11th to 13th overall with the loss of two sons. But one name we can’t avoid given his current popularity at auctions for both foals and especially embryos, is Chacco-Blue who has risen 11 places in the past two years. However, although his name is also appearing with increasing regularity on the starting lists of major showjumping classes, it’s more with geldings and mares, which naturally impacts his overall status as a Sire of Sires. It should be remembered that this ranking list is not discipline specific and, therefore, it’s typically the showjumping-oriented studbooks that claim the majority of sires. KWPN is the exception, with a similar number of Sires of Sires in both jumping and dressage. And, given the dearth of eventing sires in high-level competition, this discipline remains something of a poor relation, although there are a number of impressive names that are dominating outside this published top 40: Jaguar Mail, Heraldik xx, Diarado, Kannan, Laudanum xx Numero Uno... ■

or the second time Susana Epaillard García Cereceda has been named the Longines WBFSH Jumping Breeder of the Year, receiving this prestigious accolade for her breeding of the exceptional Selle Français gelding Donatello d’Auge. Present on her behalf was Studbook Selle Francais board member Armand Pette, as well as Julien Epaillard and Donatello himself. The 13-year-old Donatello d’Auge, bred and raised at Haras de La Bosquetterie in Normandy, has dominated the WBFSH Breeder Rankings throughout 2025, topping the list for six consecutive months and finishing with the highest points tally of any jumping horse in the world. His performances – including a landmark victory at the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Final 2025 in Basel and other top results in 5* and 4* Grand Prix competitions – have been central to Susana’s success as a breeder. Donatello d’Auge contributed 1,911 points to the final 2025 WBFSH rankings, leading all horses worldwide and helping the Selle Français studbook secure its position as the number one jumping studbook for the third year running. Susana reflects on Donatello’s enduring excellence: “Two years later he is still there, among the best… I’m really proud of the management.” She emphasises the importance of careful upbringing, allowing horses to enjoy paddock life, and starting them late under saddle to support longevity in sport. Susana’s collaboration with husband and rider Julien Epaillard has also been key to Donatello’s sustained performance, with Julien’s horse-centred approach ensuring peak condition season after season. In addition to Donatello, Susana continues to develop his younger full brother and a talented nine-year-old sister competing at 1m40, underscoring the depth of her breeding program. rom Zöbingen Germany, breeder Stephan Kurz has been honoured as the 2025 Longines WBFSH Dressage Breeder of the Year, recognising his outstanding contribution to international dressage horse breeding and his creation of the exceptional mare Mount St John Freestyle. Based in southern Germany, Stephan has spent 27 years developing a breeding programme renowned for producing horses with talent, temperament, and rideability, particularly within the Hanoverian lineage. His foundation damline, tracing back to Donnerhall, reflects his philosophy of prioritising performance over appearance. “I always say it is much more important what performance there is in the motherline. There I can judge much better if the horse will function later as a dressage horse,” he explained. Freestyle, the 2009 mare by Fidermark out of Donna Gracia (Donnerhall – Atatürk – Freiherr), exemplifies Stephan’s breeding principles. Purchased as a foal by Emma Blundell for Mount St John Stud in the UK, she first rose to prominence under Charlotte Dujardin at the 2018 World Equestrian Games. In 2023, Freestyle began a new chapter with Danish rider Cathrine Laudrup-Dufour, achieving top international scores—often above 90 percent in freestyle—and major victories in Herning, Stockholm, and Gothenburg. “Following what Freestyle does, her career achievements—it’s great!” Stephan said. Stephan credits both riders and a measure of fortune for his success: “There are so many coincidences that happened to come full circle, where everything worked out perfectly. The horses have to stay healthy and end up in the right hands,” he reflected. This award marks the first WBFSH world breeding title for Stephan Kurz, a testament to his dedication, precision, and the enduring impact of his breeding programme. ■

Working with damlines that have been in his family for generations, he combines deep knowledge of temperament and conformation with thoughtful breeding strategy to produce horses with genuine heart and athleticism — qualities epitomised by London 52. Under British rider Laura Collett, London 52 has achieved extraordinary success, including team gold and individual bronze at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, multiple CCI5* victories, and European Championship gold in 2025. His exceptional dressage ability, brave yet intelligent cross-country performance, and faultless show jumping rounds have established him as a benchmark for modern eventing. BN ‘EXTRACTED’ STALLION RANKINGS WBFSH Sire Ranking, but in order to prioritize quality over quantity, has only taken the top six offspring results of each stallion, rather than the numerical order in which they appear. The latter, exclusively a BN-created ranking, includes showjumping, dressage, and eventing stallions with tables beginning on page ?? in this Stallion Directory. It is our hope and desire to provide information that is more useful to mare owners who are not necessarily making what they see as fashionable or commercial decisions, but rather seeking the best marriage partners for their valuable maternal bloodlines. It should also be noted, that our table for eventing stallions only includes the top 10. Sadly, when looking at the WBFSH breeder rankings, based on information provided by the FEI, the majority of horses listed as stallions are in fact geldings and have never seen the inside of a breeding barn. We have drawn this to the notice of the FEI on several occasions, providing information from our own database, but it appears that they need an official notice from horse owners confirming that a stallion as been castrated. ver the past 30 years, the annual WBFSH stallion rankings have become something of an institution, but as with all institutions, there comes a time when we have to ask – is it still working? In the early days, the rankings were very heavily weighted for high-level success, thus one stallion could be crowned world number one dressage sire on the basis of one star, despite not producing anything else of note. More recently, the wheel seems to have turned full circle, with the horses topping the list – the ones with the most international competitors – not necessarily the sires of the best competitors. This is why BN has chosen to create two separate stallion rankings: • The first on the following pages, is stallions extracted from the WBFSH breeder rankings. In other words, a stallion ranking based purely on sporting performance. • The second, which has also been published for several years now, is based upon the

SIRE RANKING BASED ON SIX BEST-PERFORMING OFFSPRING he annual WBFSH/FEI horse rankings are based on points earned in FEI competitions from October 1 to September 30 each year. From these rankings the WBFSH creates a list of the world’s top sires, based on the points earned by their offspring. For some years now, our Stallion Directory Sire Ranking only calculates the points earned exclusively by the top six performers on each sire’s list. Why? We did, in fact, consider several options that would equalize the peformance results for each stallion, which still rest heavily on volume. If you take a look at the WBFSH Sire Rankings of the top-100 stallions with competition progeny, you won’t fail to notice that the number-one-ranked stallion is Cornet Obolensky, with 30,705 points, but from nearly 250 offspring. On average this equates to around 122 points per horse. As you move farther down the rankings, total points decrease, often proportionally to volume. At the other end of the volume spectrum, and the first extreme imbalance occurs with 37th-ranked Jarnac – 4,288 points – with just nine competing offspring: an average of nearly 480 per horse. Naturally, this demonstrates that calculating the top-ranked sires based

exclusively on volume doesn’t represent overall quality. Is this a case of trending popularity eclipsing good decision making? It should also be mentioned that Jarnac’s offspring average was greatly benefitted by the results of the number one horse in the 2024-2025 breeder rankings, Donatello d’Auge, who scored 1,911 points alone, and his ‘nr’ for 2025 means he did not appear in our table last year. Dressage, due to much lower discipline-specific breeding volumes, shows fewer such discrepancies between quality and quantity, while eventing sits in-between. A higher volume, but also a higher points discrepancy between the best and worst offspring in terms of competition results. In conclusion, and to quote Anne Sophie Levallois from a previous edition of the Stallion Directory regarding the evaluation of the production quality of the stallions: “For the moment, the [WBFSH sires] current rankings are largely influenced by the number of products. The more a stallion has a significant production, the more chance he has of appearing at the top of the rankings...” ■

AUCTIONS: MAJOR FLUCTUATIONS DURING 2025 World Breeding News began its auction results service in 2019. Since then we have recorded around 40,000 individual sales, with lots sired by 3,700 different stallions, from 1,400 separate sales events. It should be noted that all the statistics and figures mentioned are from auction results that have been provided to us or are publicly available. There are many more sales where auction organizers choose not to publish any of their results for undisclosed reasons. One event told us it was to preserve the anonymity of its buyers and the prices even though it was a ‘live’ and publicly attended event. Throughout the past eight years we have seen certain aspects remain constant, while others have shown dramatic changes, and it’s another dimension in the decision-making process facing breeders. Do they consider ‘rarity’ value most important, or the sales volume that usually applies to fashionable names? We simply provide information for breeders to make a personal choice. However, it must also be remembered that there are many private auction houses who do not publish their results and therefore never appear in the database. The KWPN has consistently been the most represented studbook every year followed by Zangersheide and Hannoverian. The chart on the previous page shows the sales by studbooks over the eight-year period. It should be remembered that auction figures for 2020 were influenced by Covid when fewer sales were hosted and saw a transition from ‘live’ to ‘online’. EXPLANATORY NOTES • Life No: When stallions are sold and/or change nationality, a birth number may be lost or a new

registration number subsequently issued by a different licensing studbook. The use of the 10-digit ULN (Unique Life Number) is gradually being adopted, if not yet universally. • Birth studbook: For the majority, ‘part-bred’ means a Thoroughbred/Warmblood cross. Part-bred stallions are typically approved or licensed later in life based on their own or their offsprings’ competition results. In some cases, no WBFSH-recognized studbook may have existed in the stallion’s home country at the time of birth. Similarly, birth studbooks may have merged and former acronyms may now be meaningless to the majority of breeders. We have, therefore, adopted either the new studbook name, where it is provided and recognized, or used ‘unknown’. And, although the WBFSH does not recognize the Jockey Club as an independent studbook, many Thoroughbreds (designated by the ‘xx’ suffix) are approved/licensed for Warmblood breeding by a WBFSH member studbook. Special note: Only full members and association studbooks in good standing with the WBFSH are included in the directory so, from time to time, a studbook and its stallions may be deleted. • Clones: When a clone is approved/licensed as a sire by a member studbook of the WBFSH he qualifies for inclusion in the Stallion Directory. When a clone is listed in the Directory, we will add (Clone of CL) in parenthesis following their birth name. Similarly, in the ‘Breeder’ column, the name of the original stallion breeder will be followed by the clone’s breeder (where known). • Colour: Among the world’s studbooks, nomenclature for horse colours are as diverse as the colours themselves. In general, we have adopted the birth studbook’s recorded colour, although they may not be universal. For instance, in Europe, a black and white horse is typically known as Piebald, but may be designated as Black Tobiano or Pinto by some breeding associations. It should be noted that the various shades of ‘bay’ (bright bay, brown bay, black bay, … etc.) have been condensed to either ‘bay’ (B) or ‘dark bay’ (DB) in the Stallion Directory. The online database provides a drop-down menu for colour abbreviations. • Name: Where known, we have included a former name by which a stallion might have been commonly recognized, although this information is not always notified to us. Similarly, where a stallion’s name has been changed with the addition of a sponsor prefix or suffix, we have primarily retained the original name, with a few exceptions. In some cases, Cornet Obolensky being one, an entry may not include a birth name where they have all but disappeared from later pedigrees. (Hopefully, this will help to mitigate any confusion given that competition names change several times during a horse’s career.) • Contact Information: To avoid confusion and maintain alphabetical integrity, it should be noted that the ‘proper’ names of contacts appear first; Lewitz Gestüt, rather than Gestüt Lewitz.
