A NEW VISION FOR A FLOATING COHOUSING COMMUNITY IN THE AUCKLAND WAITEMATA HARBOUR

The design of this new Waitemata Harbour water-based dwelling community, and its woven jetty landscape, is based upon a sensitive and sympathetic aproach to the context and nature of the Waitemata Harbour. The design encourages its residents to flow through a pedestrian jetty, through a collection of linked dwellings and pavilions, each anchored by the common house lookout tower. It is a fragmented, non-hierarchical, horizontal village of linked spaces where people can meet, intermingle, and be closer to nature. This proposal is a place which invites and draws together both visitors and the water dwelling community to meet with water and architecture.

This new water-based dwelling community has to be thought of in terms of openness, flexibility and resident engagement. The composition is composed of independent components, adaptable to change and growth, highlighted by a community tower which is the common house. The carefully organized jetty offers a variety of promenades throughout the whole site and access to both large and more intimately scaled spaces. These spaces allow social interaction and strong integration with outdoor and the water, as well as offering new perspectives in the surroundings, while the common house is the social hub and heart of the community.

The concept for the project was driven by its context. This thesis attempts to integrate the community and site by responding to the surrounding volcanic landscape. Auckland Waitemata Harbour’s most unique feature is its surrounding landscape and skyline which is shaped by the presence of its many (40 plus) volcanoes. The focal point of the Waitemata Harbour is Rangitoto Island - a landmark volcano in the sea at the opening of the Waitemata Harbour and a dominant feature of the harbour’s skyline. The look-out tower of the common house echoes this strong verticality. From up here, people can enjoy astonishing views over the city and to Rangitoto Island.

The forms and materials are distinctive and contemporary. This new waterbased dwelling concept, together with the charred timber façade, echoes the process of regeneration that occurs after the eruption of a volcano. Lining the interior of the building, the light oak timber represents the warm glowing core of a volcano. The material that makes up the jetty and the floor of the dwellings is a continuous surface which is representative of the bed of lava which makes up the underlying surface of Rangitoto Island and the reef of the Waitemata Harbour. Although the community is made up of components, this continuous surface unites the components in to one cohesive whole.

BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE

A COMBINED ART GALLERY AND HOUSE

This studio project explored briefs from two very different clients. It required custom made dwellings, purpose built to accomodate each client’s peculuarities and ambitions, built on two very different sites. The following work shows the proposal for the client who is a retired structural engineer specialising in concrete structures, a creative cook, a recluse who values his privacy, and an avid art collector with a large art collection. The building was to be a combined art gallery and house.

Inspiration was drawn from mid-century Modernist architecture in Brazil for the design of this concrete and stone house. It references the architecture of Brazilian Modernists such as Marcio Kogan, Lucio Costa, and Paulo Mendes Da Rocha –whose work often features bold forms, protruding volumes, and raw concrete surfaces. The concrete house utilises concrete as a major construction material and the defining element of the building’s architecture – in so doing expressing the owner and his craft.

The property is set on Milford beach with views out to Rangitoto Island. Rangitoto Island is surrounded by water and this concept is reflected in my design - theproperty is set on the beach and is set on water.

The property is a contrast between the lightness of water and the heaviness of concrete. Water integrates the house with the landscape the water is the link to the horizon of the ocean.

The house comprises a pair of two-storey blocks made from concrete, glass and wood which are reflected in plan and connected by a chef inspired kitchen which has a green roof. Cooking is the client’s passion and inside at the heart of the property is a chef’s kitchen.

The tapered concrete form provides a lens to maximise views to both front and rear whilst east elevation is windowless and restrict sight lines to neighbours as well as keeping privacy for the owner of the house from gallery visitors. Glazed doors link the lounge, kitchen and entrance gallery to the internal courtyard which features a swimming pool.

SUNSET BEACH SURF LIFESAVING CLUB

WAIKATO NEW BUILD AND REFURBISHMENT

This studio group project was an actual live brief from the Sunset Beach Lifeguard Service and Port Waikato community. The club is a vibrant part of the Port Waikato community and plays an important role in ensuring public safety, as well as delivering a range of community oriented programmes and services including sport, youth development and education.

The Club’s facilities are situated upon a foreshore reserve that is subjected to rapid and ongoing erosion. A community hall and public car parks also dominate the foreshore reserve. Recent measures to combat the effects of erosion have involved the relocation of the lifeguard patrol tower, and reduction / reconfiguration of the car park. A report by the Waikato District Council has instructed the club to relocate the surf club (including patrol tower), carparks, and community hall to combat the foreseeable erosion.

Extended facilities, suitability of materials, and a restructuring of the existing programme informed the pragmatic approach of the design. This was developed as part of a group assignment where I took on a leadership role.

With a sensitive approach to scale, accessibility, and contemporary design, the scheme is inspired by the idea of the durable and humble boat shed.

The proposal was commended by the club for its humble approach to the brief and rigorous devotion to feasibility. In the end, however, due to budget constraints the club down scaled the brief and chose to go with an external local architect.

PORTS OF AUCKLAND REGENERATION

LANDFORM ARCHITECTURE: THE AUCKLAND CONCERT HALL AND PORT PARK

This project looks at the role architecture plays in facilitating connection between landscape and community. It proposes to rejuvenate the port of Auckland by restoring and enhancing the natural landscape to create an urban park with key iconic landform buildings to bring people together. Drawing on the writing of the late local academic Richard Toy, it considers unique and defining features of the local environment to be an imperative consideration in the design of communities. Toy identifies the unique and defining features of Auckland as being the watery landscape, with its bays and prominent headlands, along with its 40 plus volcanic cones.

Toy’s proposal reflects an understanding of the profound influence the features of the local landscape, built or topographical, can have on the sense of place of an urban space. Notable theorist and historian of architecture, David Gissen also explores the reconstruction of lost landscapes and landforms. Gissen believes that the architectural reconstruction of nature could bring nature back into the view and experience of the city.

The relationship between landscape and architecture is explored, particularly looking at the way some architecture can become, or be seen to have, qualities of landscape. It introduces the typology of the landform building. The landform typology relates strongly to the ideas put forth by Toy who believed that architecture should reinforce existing topography of landscape. It considers landform, alongside landscape architecture and land art, as the essential disciplines and typologies which inform this project.

The reclaimed land of the Auckland Port sits atop or conceals what might be perceived as the true character of the land. The original foreshore of the port was one of bays and prominent headlands. The most prominent headland, the ridge of a volcano, was that of Te Rerenga Ora Iti or Point Britomart. This significant historical cultural site has been destroyed due to reclamation and port infrastructure. As per Toy’s theory, this design honours the unique and defining features of the natural landscape – specifically the bay formation and Point Britomart.

The site has been re-shaped in to a larger bay with two prominent headlands. The concert hall and art gallery both sit in a commanding position at the end of these headlands and have been conceived as landform buildings, reinforcing the existing topography of the historic landscape. The art gallery mimics a maori pa whilst the concert hall mimics the shape of a volcano.

The concert hall form, with its crater-shaped formation and rotunda, is an abstracted representation of the historical landscape conditions of Point Britomart. You will see the building as a landscape. The mountainous building is 60 meters in height.

The building is on the edge of nature of the water and the artificial city. Its continuous, undulating organic surface blurs the line between structure and landscape. As the harbour rises up to the land, it merges with the surfaces of the building that reach up to the sky. Both building forms blur the boundary between architecture, public space, and urban landscape.
