The majority of pupils have gone onto Bredon Sixth Form and continued their studies at University. Pupils have also completed apprenticeships with BT, started careers within the Armed Forces, and studied at Agricultural college.

English Language IGCSE encourages pupils to become appreciative and critical readers, writers, speakers and listeners. The skills gained from the course will assist pupils in their future careers.

GCSE Mathematics is offered at Higher or Foundation Level depending on a student’s prior performance at Key Stage 3. Both levels are taken as a linear course which is examined in the Summer of Year 11. Students sit three papers; one noncalculator and two calculator papers.

Combined Science is an excellent opportunity to continue to study all three sciences, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and obtain two GCSE qualifications. The course will give a broad understanding of each area of science and will prepare pupils for further study in the sciences. With a focus on practical work and learning through investigations, studying the sciences gives pupils an exciting and broad understanding of the amazing world around us.

Approach to Learning

Pupils will be taught by our subject specialists in the three subject areas. Our small class sizes allow for plenty of practical activities, allowing for development of practical skills.

A Closer Look:

This is a two year course where pupils are able to investigate thirteen exciting curriculum areas within each of the three sciences. This will be taught over the course of two years. Regular opportunities for practical activities will be integrated into the programme of study enabling pupils to learn through these practical experiences. Pupils will complete topic tests after each topic allowing them to track their progress throughout the course.

Progression

This course provides a good foundation for progressing on to Level 3 Science courses such as A-level Biology, Chemistry or Physics, as well as Level 3 BTEC Applied Science. A grade of 6 or above would be required for these higher level courses. A Science GCSE is often a prerequisite for going to college or Sixth Form.

Art and Design

Qualification Overview

There is an increasing demand for creative and innovative people in industry and business in Great Britain and abroad. Art and Design students are such people. Creativity takes on many forms and, likewise, the creative industry encompasses a broad array of jobs requiring different practices, talents and skills. Apprenticeships including Art Therapy, Stage Design, Visual Effects for film and television, Creative Blacksmithing, Game Design, allow students to immerse themselves in the world of creative work beyond the school environment. This subject provides, at the very least, a life enhancing experience and at best a foundation which could open the door to a relevant University Degree and career.

Approach to Learning

The Art Department offers and delivers a wide ranging multi disciplinary GCSE Art and Design course. This broad approach to visual work is essential for both experience - there is no better way to develop creative skills - and for the discovery of strength.

Pupils embark on a creative journey that develops their ideas through experimentation and sustained investigations to produce a personal portfolio (coursework) demonstrating their ability to develop responses into creative and sophisticated final outcomes. This leads to the externally set task, for which they are fully prepared.

The course contains two elements, the personal portfolio (60%) and the externally set task (40%).

We divide the course into three main parts: two units of coursework that makes up the personal portfolio and the externally set task.

The externally set task is approached in the same way as the personal portfolio but the final outcome is completed under a timed ten hour examination in the Art Department and the starting point is set by the exam board.

Progression

The number and variety of courses available to students wishing to continue their studies to degree standard is wide and exciting. Infact, there are more degree choices in Art and Design than any other subject, including Architecture, Graphic Design, Fashion Illustration and Special Effects for Film.

Biology

Qualification Overview

This course is an opportunity to continue to investigate the living world around us and to focus on the biological processes which are essential to life. With a focus on practical work and learning through investigations, studying Biology gives pupils an exciting and broad understanding of living things which they can relate to the world around them.

Approach to Learning

Pupils will be taught by subject specialists. Our small class sizes allow pupils to develop their confidence in science by being able to fully investigate the topics that they cover. Regular feedback will be given to students allowing them to track their progress over the period of the course.

This is a two year course where pupils are able to concentrate on Biology as a single science to achieve a single GCSE qualification. The content is split into seven topic areas which will be split over the two years. Regular opportunities for practical activities will be integrated into the programme of study so that pupils can learn through their practical experiences.

Qualification Overview

IGCSE Geography gives pupils the opportunity to study the world around them on a local, regional and global scale.

On a local level, Tewkesbury provides the perfect setting for pupils to discover the impacts of flooding and management techniques. On a global level, the Malaysian Rainforest, shows pupils the impact of deforestation and the importance of sustainability.

Throughout the course pupils study a range of topics including: Population, Volcanoes and Earthquakes, Rivers, Coasts, Weather, Climate and Vegetation, Development, Industry, Resources and Climate Change.

Approach to Learning

In this course we use multi-sensory resources and methods to bring the world to life. These include Images, Video, Maps, Geographical Information Systems and Fieldwork.

Fieldwork is an important part of the course. Local Fieldwork is conducted at Tewkesbury and Upton. A four day residential fieldwork trip to Start Bay, allows pupils to study coastal erosion and its management. Pupils also conduct beach profiling, cost-benefit analysis and management evaluations during the trip.

History teaches pupils many skills which will provide long lasting benefits. Critical thinking skills are learnt from asking why and how things have happened. Studying History improves pupils ability to analyse, research and construct persuasive arguments.

Approach to Learning

In this course we use different techniques to understand a variety of historical events. The course develops and extends pupils knowledge and understanding of specified key events, periods and societies in local, British, and wider world history; and of the wide diversity of human experience

There is an academic visit to the Charles Hasting medical museum and a trip to Belgium is being planned so that pupils can learn about the Western Front in World War One.

This course is exam based and pupils are coached in effective exam techniques.

Qualification Overview

Photography GCSE is both diverse in its scope and multi-disciplinary in its approach. This all-encompassing approach to visual work is crucial for gaining a broad range of artistic, lens based experience.

In Photography GCSE, pupils develop a wide range of skills, starting with building a basic camera, and working in a darkroom to exploring technical equipment and learning how to use professional editing software.

Pupils follow a creative process to develop their ideas through experimentation and extended research in order to construct a personal portfolio project, and respond to an externally set task. This process allows pupils to engage on a creative path that allows them to develop their ideas through experimentation and prolonged research.

Approach to Learning

To be successful on this course pupils will need to be enthusiastic and committed to the subject. Pupils will be required to work beyond the school timetable, and most importantly, develop a real passion and a love of subject!

The two years are packed with opportunities to try out different approaches to photography, from creating professional portraits in a studio with adjustable lighting to experimenting with film and developing your own photos in the darkroom. Digital Photophy and the use of programmes like Photoshop is included in the curriculum. Pupils have the ability to be inspired by their own choice of photographers and artists, and then incorporate their own style and learning to produce exciting individual photographic outcomes. Religious Studies GCSE

Eduqas Qualification Overview

Pupils will study the beliefs and practices of two contrasting faiths, Christianity and one other religion. The course also includes the study of ethical issues from both a religious and secular point of view. Religious and other attitudes to abortion, euthanasia and human rights, amongst others, are considered.

Approach to Learning

Pupils should have an interest in exploring the beliefs of others and see things from different perspectives.

This course develops an understanding of religions and non-religious beliefs, such as atheism and humanism. This is gained by reading through key religious texts and other texts of world views.

Students will develop their ability to construct well-argued, balanced and structured written arguments and take part in debates around emotive subjects. They will also engage with questions on belief, value, truth and the influence this has on their lives and that of others.

Level 2 Subsidiary Diploma City and Guilds

Qualification Overview

Throughout this course you will cover the key principles, knowledge, understanding and skills relevant to the agricultural industry. Learners will study a range of subjects including livestock husbandry, plant science and estate skills. This will include some trips and visits to other commercial farms, working around the school site assisting with maintenance projects and working closely with the large animals on Bredon’s farm.

Approach to Learning

The units are graded Pass, Merit or Distinction for the Level 2 award. This is based on meeting certain criteria throughout the coursework. There is no formal exam for this subject. Because the course is 100% coursework a degree of written and independent learning is required, as well as skillful undertaking of evidenced practical’s. You should enjoy working closely with animals, being outdoors in all weathers and don’t mind getting your hands dirty. You will receive three lessons a week but will be expected to complete extra duties on the farm within some break times.

Throughout this course you will cover the key principles, knowledge, understanding and skills relevant to the animal care industry. Learners will study animal handling, animal behavior and welfare and animal housing and accommodation. This includes working closely with the large animals on the farm as well as small domesticated animals such as dogs, guinea pigs, gerbils and reptiles.

The units are graded Pass, Merit or Distinction for the Level 2 award. This is based on meeting certain criteria throughout the coursework. Because the course is completely coursework based, a degree of written and independent learning is required, as well as skillful undertaking of evidenced practical’s. Pupils should enjoy working closely with animals and be confident when handling both small animals, reptiles and farm animals.Pupils will receive three lessons a week but will be expected to complete extra duties with the animals in some breaks.

This course allows you to study the world of business, giving you the opportunity to develop knowledge and technical skills in a practical learning environment. You will examine the roles and responsibilities of setting up a new business and its financial management. You will also develop key skills, such as analysis and review of key financial statements.

Approach to Learning

Pupils will carry out tasks and assignments throughout the course, which will be marked internally. One unit is assessed by an external test and pupils are coached in effective examination techniques.

This qualification is designed to be taken as part of a broad and balanced curriculum at Key Stage 4. It can be complementary learning for a wide range of subjects. You can take this qualification alongside GCSEs in EBacc subjects (such as Mathematics), practical subjects (such as Computer Science, Design & Technology, PE) and/or another level 2 vocational qualification (for example, Digital Media Production) to provide both curriculum breadth and the skills you need to make informed choices about study post-16.

Qualification Overview

Please note that this course is a double option group. Thus 6 periods per week. Students must select ICT System Support in both option groups

The qualification addresses a wide range of topics that introduce learners to the fundamental knowledge and skills of an entry-level IT professional including networking, security, virtualisation and desktop imaging and deployment. These include the ability to assemble components based on customer requirements, install, configure and maintain devices, PCs and software for end users and the ability to safely diagnose, resolve and document common hardware and software issues. Learners will also develop the skills needed to provide appropriate customer support.

Approach to Learning

This course is very much “hands-on” as it has a large practical component. The course is based on a Pass/Fail system. Pupils need to gain seventy percent for both Theory and Practical final exams to pass the courses.

To gain success will require consistent hard work and a real “time” commitment to address the course material. Having an independent work ethic will help pupils gain success. All the work is broken up into little bits and pupils are encouraged to do a bit every day. The Cisco courses are available online through Cisco Netacad from anywhere in the world.

A minimum of twenty-seven credits are required for the Certificate and thirty-seven credits for the Diploma

To gain the Certificate students will do the following units:

To gain the Diploma students complete an additional unit:

Progression

Pupils usually continue to Sixth Form where they do the Level 3 Diploma in ICT Systems Support. The Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) course is included in this diploma. After Sixth Form pupils usually move on to either University to do a BSc in Networking and Cybersecurity or follow a degree level Apprenticeship program. There are many options for a future career within the IT Sector.

Personal and Social Development Level Entry Level 3 to Level 1

ASDAN

Qualification Overview

This Personal and Social Development course will inspire self-confidence and equip pupils with the skills and qualities for future learning and work. The course focuses on the development of pupil communication skills, emotional intelligence, problem solving and working effectively with others. Pupils will build on their current knowledge through meaningful and relevant learning experiences.

Approach to Learning

The approach to learning involves engaging practical activities. These have previously included environmental projects - creating a butterfly garden, building and placing bird and bat boxes.

Other activities are focused around personal safety around the home and community, including personal transport, first aid and independent living skills. Pupils set targets around leisure activities and measure their progress.

There are many different units to choose from, each are chosen based on each pupil’s strengths and areas for maximum personal benefit. Regular support and feedback is provided to support the learning process.

The qualification is 100% coursework. Pupils are required to build up a portfolio of evidence ranging from small pieces of written work to photographs and witness statements. The course is delivered through a series of challenges, which accrue credits. Challenges include Environmental Awareness, Health Lifestyles and Preparation for Work.

Six credits are required for the Award and thirteen credits for the full Certificate. Each credit represents at least ten hours of study.

This qualification can lead onto Personal and Social Effectiveness Level 2, enrollment into Sixth Form and employment.

Uniformed Protective Services

Qualification Overview

This qualification is designed for pupils with an interest in the uniformed protective services. It will inform and prepare learners as a potential recruit for a variety of uniformed protective services such as the:

Approach to Learning

This is a coursework based subject with pupils completing graded tasks throughout the duration of the course. Much of these tasks are practical in nature and pupils are assessed on their ability to demonstrate a range of skills associated with Uniformed Protective Services. They will also be required to demonstrate their ability to physically prepare for a career in the Uniformed Protective Services.

This qualification comprises two different units of work, both are equally weighted.

Unit 1 Introduction to Uniformed Protective Services Skills. In this unit pupils will develop their understanding of the effective use of different types of communication systems. They will engage in workshops that provide them with an immersive experience of Crime Scene Investigation skills. They will also develop their knowledge of the purpose of performing foot drill and marching.

Unit 2 Physical Preparation for the Uniformed Protective Services. In this unit pupils will explore the different fitness tests used and they will learn how to produce personal fitness training plans to better their current level of fitness. Pupils will also explore different skills needed for a range of land and water-based outdoor activities. They will be required to engage in the expeditions associated with the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. The navigation and expedition skills they develop here will be directly assessed for their UPS qualification.

Within our Sixth form we offer a Level 3 Certificate in Sport and Outdoor Education. This course has UCAS points associated with it .

Vocational Pathway

Design & Technology

Qualification Overview

GCSE Design and Technology prepares pupils to participate confidently and successfully in an increasingly technological world. This course allows pupils to gain awareness and learn from wider influences on Design and Technology including historical, social, cultural, environmental and economic factors. Pupils have the opportunity to develoop and use their cretaive skills to design and make using technical and practical expertise.

Approach to Learning

Pupils are required to use the iterative design process of repeatedly exploring, creating and evaluating to improve their prototypes. The course is taught using practical work where possible to ensure good knowledge and understanding. There is also written work, drawing and use of ICT too.

The first task is to design and make a mug stand. Following on from this pupils explore materials to design a toy for a child. Once the pupils have the core knowledge they need, they can use it to design and make a prototype for the theme set by the exam board.

We start by designing and making a useful product that can be used in the home. Pupils explore other materials when designing and making other products. Once the pupils have the core knowledge they need, they can use it to design and make alternative products of their choice.

On this course pupils will learn about how Engineering and Engineers have helped shape the modern World; how products are resourced, designed and manufactured; and how engineering is in the forefront of making our planet a cleaner and greener place.

Food Preparation and Nutrition GCSE

Qualification Overview

This qualification equips pupils with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to cook and apply the principles of food science, nutrition and healthy eating. It encourages pupils to cook, enables them to make informed decisions about food and nutrition and allows them to acquire knowledge to be able to feed themselves and others affordably and nutritiously, now and later in life.

Approach to Learning

In the first year of the course, the pupils study a different food commodity each half term. Commodities include meat, fish, fruit and vegetables and dairy. Each week, the pupils will learn about science and theory behind each commodity through a range of multi sensory teaching activities. As well as the theoretical side, there will be a practical cooking session each week. At the end of each half term, the pupils will be assessed on cooking a dish of their choice to show off the commodity that they have been covering. The second year covers the two practical assessments and revising for their end of year exam.

The qualification is divided into three themes that are covered through two practical based assessments and an end of year examination:

A Food Investigation assessment that allows the pupils to plan and carry out a series of experiments into a chosen scientific cooking process. Examples from previous years include where pupils have investigated which sugar makes the best sponge cakes and what raising agents work best in scones.

A Food Preparation assessment, this includes a 3-hour practical session which will allow the pupils to showcase the skills that they have been taught. Pupils will carry out research into the chosen topic that will help them identify the three dishes that they would like to prepare and cook. The pupils will then trial and practise these dishes many times, before cooking them for their assessment

A written examination in Year 11. An exam that includes a short answer and a longer answer sections that cover a range of question types to assess scientific processes, nutrition and diet, cooking methods and food safety.

Progression

Successful completion of this course would lead nicely into our BTEC Level 3 in Hospitality. Alternatively, pupils could go on to study hospitality full time at a college or undertake an apprenticeship in professional cookery or food service.

The Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 Tech Award in Health and Social Care is for pupils who want to acquire sector-specific applied knowledge through vocational contexts by studying human lifespan development, health and social care services and values, and health and wellbeing as part of their Key Stage 4 learning.

Approach to Learning

The qualification recognises the value of learning skills, knowledge and vocational attributes to complement GCSEs. The qualification will broaden pupils’ experience and understanding of the varied progression options available to them.Two components are assesed internally, and one component is assessed through external assesment.

The three components focus on the assessment of applied knowledge and practices. These are all essential to developing a basis for progression and therefore learners need to achieve all components in order to achieve the qualification.

Progression

This qualification leads onto A Levels as preparation for entry to higher education in a range of subjects. The qualification can also lead onto study of a vocational qualification at Level 3, such as a BTEC National in Health and Social Care. This prepares learners to enter employment or apprenticeships, or to move on to higher education by studying a degree in the health or social care sector.

Qualification Overview

This Certificate is suitable for pupils who wish to study a vocational qualification alongside other qualifications and activities as part of their study programme. It encourages pupils to cook and allows them to acquire knowledge to be able to feed themselves and others affordably and nutritiously, now and later in life. Learners will also learn how to serve food and drink and offer fantastic customer service. This is mostly a practical course that will suit learners who love “doing”.

Approach to Learning

Each unit has some underpinning knowledge taught at the start through a variety of teaching methods. Using this knowledge, the pupils research, plan and carry out practical activities that include cooking and food service. The delivery and assessment of pupils’ work is designed to build awareness of the different sectors in hospitality and tourism and the skills required to work in it. Pupils will be given scenarios and real work to help them develop skills and to acquire knowledge that they can use throughout their lives. All assessment is conducted internally and then externally moderated. This means that there are no end of year exams.

The qualification is divided into units, some of which are compulsory and some optional.

There are two compulsory units to be covered: Being Organised and Developing a Personal Development Plan. Hospitality provides us with the perfect opportunity to embed these important life skills into all the practical work they undertake. Pupils are challenged to evaluate their own performance, identify ways to improve and then implement these in future lessons.

A minimum of three optional units are covered that include the practical based, Food Preparation and Cooking, Food Service and Customer Service. We also look to give a wider insight into hospitality by covering the Investigating Local Visitor Attractions Unit. We complete the course by undertaking the Running of a Hospitality Event Unit.

Approach to Learning

Our approach is multi-sensory and uses experience that can be evidenced against particular criteria. For example, in the ‘Working as part of an Effective Team’ module pupils are assessed in their planning, delivery and review of a school event. One module is focused on the pupils working towards an individual goal. This can be subject related, or more personal. For example, research and being ready to apply for a particular career. Other units focus on renewable energy, this does involve pupils conducting an audit of the school.

In this qualification you will gain a greater insight into the world of sport science. You will learn about how to keep fit and healthy as well as how to prepare athletes for elite performance.

Approach to Learning

This qualification is a coursework based subject for all modules. Your assignments will be completed and graded with the support of your teachers and work will be sent off at the end of each unit for moderation. Assignments will include practical assessments as well as written reports.
