Director’s Notes
This could have been a year without theatre at Breck. Last fall, we decided take our show online as we presented a filmed-and-streamed production of “She Kills Monsters: Virtual Realms,” which had 700 views over one weekend.
This could have been a year without a single student stepping foot on the Cargill Stage. This winter, we worked with the Compliance Team to create safety measures that would allow us to give our Seniors one last performance in the Cargill.
Each senior that you see performing under student-designed lights in this production was filmed on their own separate day with a very small student technical crew in support of their work. Everyone stood much more than 6 feet apart, all were masked (except for the singer during takes), all were supplied KN95 masks, and our accompanist had a HEPA filter nearby at all times. All surfaces touched were wiped down after use. And in the end, we were able to give our Seniors the chance to share their music with us from the stage, and the chance for one final moment — one final bow — under the Cargill lights.
But that isn’t the story of tonight.
Stories of Tonight: A Virtual Cabaret, is a celebration of the resilient voices of ALL of our Upper School theatre students. Each student in this production chose their own solo or duet to sing. Each student worked largely in isolation to create their contributions to this production, from the illustrators to the lighting designers to the editors to the performers. Each student gave of their time and energy to lend their isolated, solo voice to something larger than themselves, and so we view this production as a coming together, a statement, a celebration of music and musical theatre, of storytelling, and of each and every one of these vibrant student artists, both individually and as a part of our beautiful Breck community. Enjoy their songs and their stories.
