Homecoming 2018

WE ARE BREBEUF Homecoming Week 2018 was unlike anything Brebeuf has ever seen. The week kicked off with music and dancing at the 2018 HoCo Dance. Brebeuf Jesuit students took dress-up theme days to a whole new level with “PREP-py” day, Patriotic Day and everything in-between. The faculty/ staff even took part in the fun with a department door decorating contest, but nobody could outdo the Dean’s Office.

Each day concluded with a class competition showcasing the wide-ranging talents of our amazing students. Classes took part in a dodgeball tournament, Trivia Challenge, lip-sync battle, the annual Powderpuff Football Game, and Field Day rounding out the week.

As if the week hadn’t already been one to remember, the Braves took home a hard-fought win over Terre Haute South Vigo under the Friday night lights with a 28-23 Homecoming victory.

We will not soon forget the excitement, camaraderie and teamwork displayed throughout this year’s Homecoming festivities. And while the week has since passed, the school spirit will remain with our students throughout the year and beyond.

Ann W. King 2018 Heart of Brebeuf Award Recipient

Doug and Michelle Rose have a longstanding and generous history with Brebeuf Jesuit. As leaders in the Indianapolis community and supportive parents of two Brebeuf alumni, Sara ’14 and Emily ’18, Doug and Michelle continue to serve Brebeuf through a variety of initiatives and leadership roles. Doug, a 1976 Brebeuf Jesuit graduate, currently serves as a member of the Board of Trustees, and Michelle has been an extremely active member of Brebeuf Jesuit Mothers Association. Together, they are Magis Society members, have an endowed scholarship supporting students with financial need, supported the Kite Wellness Center and Leading the Way capital campaigns with leadership gifts, and actively support the annual needs and operations of the school. Additionally, they are active members at Congregation Beth-El Zedeck.

The Heart of Brebeuf award is given to honor a member of the Brebeuf Jesuit community who believes in and exemplifies the mission and core values of the school. This award celebrates an individual who is rooted in intellectual pursuit, prayerful discernment and generous service, working to make the world more just, humane and loving. The Heart of Brebeuf honoree has not only applied their dedication to our students, but has given of their time and talents to enrich the entirety of the Brebeuf Jesuit community.

Ann and her late husband, J.B., are the proud parents of three children: Debbie, Brian ’93, and Dan ’94. Ann served as a Brebeuf Jesuit trustee from 1996-2002, is a current member of the President’s Council, and played a heroic role for the school when she stepped in to serve as Interim President during the 1999–2000 academic year.

Ann’s support continues to be far reaching and touches a variety of initiatives at the school: the St. Ignatius Scholarship Fund, numerous capital campaigns, endowed scholarships, recent art studio renovations, and annual campaign initiatives.

THANK YOU Moms, Dads and Alumni Board!

MOMS The Brebeuf Jesuit Mothers Association contributes countless volunteer hours, generous grants for a variety of programs, and an abundance of hospitality for the entire Brebeuf community. In 2018, the Mothers Association underwrote the costs for the production rights for the Spring Musical, The King and I, aided in renovations to the Jesuit residence, threw a beast of an After Prom, and contributed to the financial aid scholarship programs at Brebeuf.

ALUMNI BOARD The 2018 Braves Open, hosted by the Brebeuf Jesuit Alumni Board, was a huge success! With 100+ golfers, several generous sponsors, and a beautiful day on the course, the event raised over $24,500 for Alumni Board priorities, including the St. Ignatius Scholarship Program, which provides funds for Brebeuf students in need of financial assistance beyond tuition. All of these students would qualify for free or reduced lunch programs if they were enrolled in a public school system. The St. Ignatius Scholarship Program provides these incredible students with funds for school books and lunches to help alleviate financial burdens and allow them the opportunity to better focus on being the best student they can be!

DADS The Brebeuf Jesuit Dads Club seeks to build community for the parents, alumni, and students of Brebeuf. They accomplish this aim by hosting a number of tailgates at athletic contests throughout the year, providing a cook-out for outgoing seniors, and giving students an edge on finals with donuts. In 2018, the Dads generously collaborated with the Mothers Association for Brebeuf Bistro: Rocks, by sponsoring the band Yacht Rock Revue.

What Is: Trivia Night

In October 2017, the Brebeuf Jesuit Mothers Association hosted its first-ever Trivia Night event, welcoming parents, alumni and friends for an evening of pub-style trivia competition. The event was intended to be a night of laid-back community building that raised funds for a variety of student activities and initiatives. The new event was a hit within the Brebeuf Jesuit community, and this October the Mothers Association presented the 2nd annual Trivia Night to a sold out and energetic crowd.

Assistant Director of Campus Ministry, Sam Glowinski emceed the competition, bringing laughs and excitement to the challenging game.

Twenty-five teams competed in ten rounds of trivia, spanning topics including Bringing Bands to Life, All In The Name Of Science, It All

Started With The Band, and Are You A Master Chef? Brebeuf Jesuit teachers were auctioned off as “experts” throughout the game, giving teams an extra edge. Trivia Night 2018 welcomed 230 guests and raised over $15,000 with all proceeds benefitting our students through the Brebeuf Fund!

We want to say THANK YOU to everyone that came out and made the second Trivia Night such a success, as well as a special thanks to our Trivia Night chairs, Linda Maurer and Lynne Moore, and the numerous volunteers that helped make the event possible.

Fr. Bill Verbryke, S.J.

Brebeuf Jesuit’s 12th President

Father Bill Verbryke, S.J. began as Brebeuf Jesuit’s 12th President this academic year.

Father Bill’s unanimous election by the Board followed a rigorous, four-month search. He emerged as the overwhelming choice to lead Brebeuf Jesuit based on his impressive accomplishments as a Jesuit and his engaging and inspirational leadership style. Father Bill succeeded Father Jack Dennis, S.J. on July 1, 2018.

Father Bill joined the Jesuit Candidates program while attending the University of Cincinnati and entered the Society of Jesus in 1973. He was ordained to the Jesuit Priesthood in 1983. This journey included serving as a faculty member at Loyola Academy in Wilmette, Illinois; obtaining his Masters in Divinity and Theology at Berkeley; serving as the Director of Vocations for the Midwest Province (former Chicago Province) of the Society of Jesus and returning to his alma mater, St. Xavier High

School in Cincinnati, where he served as president for 10 years. Following his service to St. Xavier, he then served as Director of Novices in Detroit for eight years before returning Cincinnati to serve as the Rector of the Jesuit Community.

May we take time regularly to ask what am I personally, and we as a community, being invited into as we seek to find God in all things, people, and activities that we encounter each day.

Father Bill has had a long-standing relationship with Brebeuf Jesuit. He served a term as a member of the Board of Trustees

from 1995-2001 and was appointed to fulfill another term in 2012. In October 2016, he relocated to Indianapolis to serve as the Superior of the Jesuit Community, Brebeuf Jesuit’s Vice President of Mission and Identity and a member of the school’s leadership team.

During the opening of the school year in presentations to faculty, staff, parents and students, Father Bill reflected on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, where he encourages the retreatant to “be open, generous, and courageous” in engaging the retreat experience. He asked that we pray for these same qualities as we enter this new year with all its opportunities and challenges.

May we take time regularly to ask what am I personally, and we as a community, being invited into as we seek to find God in all things, people, and activities that we encounter each day. May we always respond with grateful hearts.

In addition to his asking our community to be “open, generous, and courageous”, he shared his priorities for the year. These five priorities are guided by our mission and supported by the leadership of the School.

PRESIDENTIAL PRIORITIES ENGAGING AND COLLABORATIVE STUDENT CENTERED ENVIRONMENT The mental health and well-being of our students is paramount to their success and this will remain a priority for our faculty and staff. We will continue to seek training opportunities for our staff and ensure that programs exist to support our students’ needs. Communication is critical, and we maintain open lines of communication with our families.

School safety is at the forefront of our thoughts, and we are constantly evaluating our safety procedures and protocols. We are fortunate to have two onsite Security Resource Officers to assist with monitoring our campus, security cameras on campus, and on-going training for our students, faculty and staff on various drills.

A current review of our existing footprint is underway. We recently completed a capital campaign which allowed us to renovate all of our classrooms, created the Information Commons, and expanded the classroom and laboratory space in the Science Wing. Most recently we have updated the music wing with technology, renovated the gym lobby, replaced the floor in the west gym and are adding a building to the soccer stadium to allow for on-site concession, ticket sales, and proper storage.

Moving forward, we would like to focus on our cafeteria and student commons and spend some time collaborating with students and faculty at the potential of that space.

We would like to create a hub, a gathering space, where we share meals, campus ministry offices, community service, perhaps counseling, the student paper and yearbook would create a buzz about this student centered nucleus. Additionally, we would like to look at our Chapel and evaluate what updates and repairs we might need, how we might creatively use that space, and how we preserve this important piece of our history.

These are just two priorities but others may arise and we will be prepared to evaluate an overall campus plan.

STRENGTHENING OUR JESUIT IDENTITY AND ENSURING AN INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY We will continue to operate as a missiondriven organization acting upon and embodying our fundamental Jesuit identity.

In this capacity, we witness interaction across racial, ethnic, socio-economic, religious, international and cultural lines. We will support the work of the Office of Equity and Inclusion to promote programs and advance critical conversations to seek understanding over indifference.

We are committed to support the work of the Principal and his team to ensure that structures are in place that allow attracting, developing, and retaining excellent teachers.

Additionally, we will conduct a formal review of our schedule and an evaluation of curriculum with an outside agency to assist us with the review of the effectiveness and impact, and to seek out opportunities for growth.

Our Office of Campus Ministry is an energizing and support force within our school community. Their work on retreat programs for students and adults, as well as liturgical development, and student outreach is so well received and will remain an important component to the student experience at Brebeuf Jesuit.

DISTINCTIVE ACADEMICS We will continue to place a priority on the outstanding college preparatory education in the Jesuit tradition ensuring that each

Brebeuf ’s College Counseling program is a four-year comprehensive program with a superior personalized approach for each student. College Counselors take academic, social, and financial aspects of each student into consideration when helping students and families throughout the application process — an important priority to successfully transition seniors to life beyond Brebeuf.

CULTURE OF PHILANTHROPY Philanthropy can be defined as a voluntary action for the common good. Through intellectual pursuit, prayerful discernment and generous service, Brebeuf Jesuit strives to give students the foundation, the skills and the will to make the world more just, humane and loving. All are called to a holy boldness – to do all things for the greater glory of God. Community service is a hallmark in Jesuit education and Brebeuf Jesuit sets the bar with over 2,000 hours of service conducted last year by our students. It is imperative that we set these examples of service to others in

our own lives while we support the actions and attitudes of our students.

A deeper culture of philanthropy is needed to prepare Brebeuf for the future. Tuition alone cannot sustain the School for the next 56 years and beyond. Increasing financial support from members of the Brebeuf community will be essential to making programs, facilities, scholarships, and opportunities available to future generations of students.

STRATEGIC PLAN: STRATEGIC COMPASS In the fall of 2016, Brebeuf Jesuit embarked on a journey to develop its next strategic plan. Led by a consulting firm, Independent School Management, this Plan was driven by a broad range of inputs, insights, and data. That information was vital in helping to identify and provide the foundation for the Board of Trustees to determine the appropriate strategic priorities for Brebeuf Jesuit over the next six years. This plan is essentially a financial roadmap to ensure success and sustainability. The priorities of the plan are the root and basis for the priorities for the year.

This section of Bylines is dedicated to celebrate some of the stories of philanthropy at our school and reflect on the great works that our donors help us to achieve.

Just as St. Ignatius of Loyola has called us to do, I have called on our community to be open, generous, and courageous. The strength of our community is built on the

Jamie, In recognition of Giving Day (every day is going to be a giving day), and with profound gratitude for the honor of receiving the President’s Medal, we wish to contribute $300,000 to The Brebeuf Fund in honor of my parents, Jill and Irwin Rose.

It’s a personally rewarding pleasure to be a part of making something truly meaningful happen in the lives of kids who pursue excellence in education at Brebeuf Jesuit! All talented students, eager for the best education possible, need is an opportunity. The Brebeuf Fund provides this opportunity and serves the School’s mission. Michelle and I were inspired by the story on Lorna and Andy Mohr regarding their generosity to Brebeuf.

Brebeuf has been instrumental in my life, and in the lives of my daughters, my sister, my parents, my cousins, and other family members. In connection with Philanthropy Week, and the upcoming Magis Society event, as well as the President’s Dinner, 10

my parents, Jill and Irwin Rose, have also committed $200,000 to support the Brebeuf Jesuit students with a gift to The Brebeuf Fund.

My mother, Jill, was raised in a secular Jewish home in Chicago. As such, she knew about the reputation of a Jesuit education. Anyone from Chicago who valued education was well familiar with the Jesuits. My father was raised in a more traditional Jewish household in Indianapolis. He did not know “boo” about the Jesuits. My mother moved to Indianapolis after they were married. She tells the story that when I was about four years old, Brebeuf was coming out of the ground. There was a sign on the property facing, what was then called Road 100, which identified the site as the future home of Brebeuf Preparatory School – a boys Jesuit high school. While driving down Road 100 together, my mother

saw the sign and exclaimed, “That is where we are going to send our son!” To which, my father apparently responded, “Over my dead body is a Jewish son of ours going to attend a Catholic high school.”

My dad, Irwin Rose, was himself awarded the President’s Medal in 1984, served as a trustee, and together my parents have remained actively involved and engaged in the success of Brebeuf Jesuit. My father’s President’s Medal was framed and hung in a prominent place in his office for the rest of his career. I can’t explain what an honor it is for me to follow in his footsteps and receive this medal!

Thanks a Million!

On Wednesday, September 5, Father Bill shared news with our community about Lorna and Andy Mohr’s pace-setting philanthropy to Brebeuf.

As leaders in the Indianapolis community and involved parents of Brebeuf Jesuit alumni Drew ’12 and Sam ’15, Andy and Lorna Mohr have demonstrated a deep commitment to Jesuit education through role model involvement in their community, and in support of the students, faculty and staff at Brebeuf Jesuit.

Their dedication has had a profound impact on the Brebeuf community and their support did not fade with the graduation of their children. Andy and Lorna’s gifts to Brebeuf Jesuit now total well over $1 million, making them one of the largest individual benefactors in the school’s history. Their gifts have been used for student scholarship, capital projects, special events, student programming and annual fund campaigns – to name just a few. In addition, Andy Mohr Automotive donated two new vehicles for Brebeuf Bistro raffles which generated additional gifts in excess of $150,000.

To recognize their profound support and commitment to Brebeuf Jesuit during the Leading the Way Capital Campaign, the Information Commons was named the Mohr Family Information Commons. Their generosity continued following that capital campaign with additional contributions elevating their support over the $1 million milestone. As an expression of gratitude and recognition, the soccer stadium will be named in their honor and will bear the name Andy Mohr Stadium.

of the Leading the Way Capital Campaign.

The expansion of the previous library and technology department became the evolution into the Mohr Information Commons. Expanded computer lab facilities have provided an improved study and research environment for students and faculty, transforming the library into the center for the exchange of electronic data and information. The expanded space has doubled the occupancy throughout the day, allows for natural light, provides group and independent work space, and is an all-around game changer for our students.

Improvements to the soccer stadium were needed to ensure a quality environment for athletes to succeed. Andy and Lorna provided the necessary resources to make those needs a reality. Stadium improvements include a Bermuda grass playing surface, new nets, new goals, fencing improvements, a ticket and concession building, and branding elements to enhance the stadium’s appeal. The Brebeuf Jesuit soccer program has witnessed profound success of its teams and the recognition of indivudal

athletes for both their academic and athletic contributions.

In a recent visit with Andy and Lorna, they shared their sentiments about supporting Brebeuf and why they remain involved and engaged even though their sons have graduated.

“Brebeuf Jesuit had a profound impact on our children and we appreciate the value it adds to the community. We are inspired by the leadership, faculty, students and graduates and are honored to have the opportunity to contribute to the growth and success of Brebeuf Jesuit. We hope the telling of our story will inspire others within the Brebeuf community to support the school with their own time, talent and/or treasure capabilities.”

In addition to their volunteer efforts at Brebeuf, Andy and Lorna live our motto of men and women for others with their service to the greater Indianapolis area and we appreciate their continued efforts as ambassadors for the School.

The Brebeuf Fund makes a difference for ALL students As part of the school’s current strategic plan, Strategic Compass, Brebeuf Jesuit refreshed The Brebeuf Fund in the Fall of 2017. The core of The Brebeuf Fund expanded to include not only the much-needed support for student financial aid, but also support for exceptional academics and teaching, spiritual growth opportunities, and the operations of buildings, grounds, and campus.

Three funding priorities were determined, based on the core values of Brebeuf Jesuit: Education of the Whole Person: Academic Innovation, Faculty and Staff Support, and Campus Facilities; Creating a Caring and Diverse Community: Student Financial Aid and Scholarships; and For the Greater Glory of God: Student Experience. Over the last 12 months, the school saw The Brebeuf Fund grow to over $1 million raised, an increase of 18% compared to the year prior. Our success is a shared one, as gifts to The Brebeuf Fund

are expended in the year they are received, so the impact on our school was immediate.

Notable ways in which gifts to The Brebeuf Fund benefitted our community in 2017-2018 include awarding 28% of our students with need-based scholarship awards; providing professional development opportunities for faculty and staff to attend conferences that enhance their academic and spiritual beings; keeping the costs of retreats affordable for families, so that all students who are interested are able to attend; and much more.

Our heartfelt thanks go out to the 1,174 donors who chose to support Brebeuf Jesuit this past year!

Philanthropy Week 2018 was a week for the record books!

September 2-8, 2018 Brebeuf Jesuit celebrated its 56th birthday on September 4, 2018.

Tons of social media posts and emails from the community about how Brebeuf Jesuit has impacted lives in the most positive ways.

183 donors participated in Brebeuf ’s annual Giving Day resulting in $1,613,912.25.

The Class of 2021 won the “penny wars” competition on Giving Day… for the second year in a row!

The Alumni Association Board of Directors contributed a total of $24,257.

Brebeuf Jesuit Faculty and Staff contributed $28,536.83.

Donor Spotlight: Shirley and Rick Roberts Shirley and Rick Roberts first connected with Brebeuf Jesuit when their son Doug ’88 began as a freshman, then reconnected with the school when daughter Leslie ’95 embarked on her freshman year in 1991. Over the last 30 plus years, Brebeuf has remained a source of inspiration for them and served as a way to keep their daughter’s memory alive.

During her four years at Brebeuf, Leslie Roberts was a passionate vocalist, pianist, and actress, and she participated in many plays and concerts as a performer or student director. She was a member of the Madrigal Choir (of which she was president in her senior year), received a gold recognition at ISSMA as a pianist, and performed roles in various theatrical productions.

Along with the performing arts, one of her more formative experiences at Brebeuf was participating in a retreat in West Virginia, where she witnessed Ignatian Spirituality in a way she had not previously experienced.

Following her death in 2002 at age 24, her parents, family, and friends established the Leslie Roberts Angel Fund. This annual scholarship provides a travel stipend for students attending off-campus performing arts workshops or participating in a Brebeuforganized service trip.

June 10, 2018 was a milestone for the Roberts – they joyfully celebrated 50 years of marriage.

The students at Brebeuf Jesuit are fortunate that opportunities like Leslie’s scholarship are available to them, and Brebeuf Jesuit is fortunate that families like the Roberts are part of our community.

Updates to the Gymnasiums Improve the Athletic Experience GYM LOBBY The Gym Lobby serves as the primary entrance for students and for guests attending community events and athletic competitions.

In addition to athletic events, the West Gym is home to all-school convocations, Baccalaureate Mass, admissions events, and award ceremonies.

The Gym Lobby was in need of repairs and remodeling and, due to the generosity of numerous donors, with a lead gift from Bill Witchger ’66, Brebeuf repaired the roof over the lobby; installed a second set of doors to improve safety and combat weather challenges; remodeled the interior for faster entry and better aesthetics, among other improvements.

WEST GYM The gym floor in the West Gym was original to the school and beyond repair and updates.

Over the last 50 years, gym floor technology has advanced, offering a premier surface for sound and performance.

The Estes Family came forward with a generous gift to assist with the new floor. Bill and Taylor Estes are the proud parents of three Brebeuf Jesuit graduates: Zak ’08, Cali ’10, and McKena ’15. All three Estes children had successful athletic careers and spent countless hours on the court. Zak Estes experienced success on the basketball team and then went on to play basketball for the University of Richmond. Cali Estes Moore was a volleyball powerhouse, and during her time at Brebeuf she played on two state championship teams before heading to Elon University to continue her volleyball career. McKena Estes is beginning her senior year at Xavier University where she is a setter for the volleyball team.

Brebeuf Jesuit is proud to officially name the court, Estes Family Court as a tribute to the family legacy, dedication, and loyal support of the Estes Family.

EAST GYM HVAC The final piece of the renovation project added an HVAC unit to the East Gym. The East Gym has been primarily used for Physical Education classes and team practices. With the new HVAC system, the East Gym allows for multiple competitions to run simultaneously, and provides the ability to host tournament play.

A special thank you to all the donors who contributed to the projects, ensuring that these renovations were completely funded by donor support and no tuition dollars were allocated.

The 2018 Bistro Fund-an-Item proceeds also went to support these projects.

The Class of 2018 proudly supported two programs at Brebeuf Jesuit with their class gift: the St. Ignatius Scholarship Fund, and updated outlets and portable charging stations for the Mohr Family Information Commons.

When considering where their class gift could have the most impact, the Senior Council was motivated to serve and reach all students.

The St. Ignatius Scholarship Fund provides stipends for lunch and book purchases to the approximately 50 students who attend Brebeuf each year with financial aid needs that exceed tuition. The Class of 2018 is the second class to support this vital scholarship, giving over $7,000 from their class account.

The other half of their gift was a bit of a pet-project. To further the renovations of the Mohr Family Information Commons, the Class gifted new outlets, complete with USB ports, and portable charging stations to the school, so no device will go uncharged at Brebeuf Jesuit.

On behalf of the entire Brebeuf community, thank you to the Class of 2018 for your thoughtfulness and for living what it means to be men and women for others.

Father Jack Dennis, S.J. Endowed Scholarship In recognition of Fr. Jack Dennis, S.J.’s six years of service to Brebeuf Jesuit, the Father Jack Dennis, S.J. Endowed Scholarship was created. Funded through the overwhelming kindness of our community of parents, alumni, and friends, the scholarship will be awarded to a student who needs financial assistance to attend Brebeuf Jesuit.

During his presidency, Fr. Jack, or FJ as he was affectionately called, sought the highest-caliber educational experience for our students, from technology in the classrooms to ensuring that no one had to worry about affording his or her lunch.

By way of the Father Jack Dennis, S.J. Endowed Scholarship, his legacy will live on for generations to come. A special thank you to all the donors who supported this special scholarship initiative and to those individuals who purchased raffle tickets at the 2018 Bistro, as the proceeds were directed to the scholarship fund.

September 2018. It was the middle of homecoming week, and Brebeuf ’s student body waited in anticipation for the class lip-sync battle performances. The excitement and energy in the Schwitzer Gymnasium was electric. Retzy Thompson, a substitute teacher at Brebeuf Jesuit, was the second judge announced. “Coming to a classroom

near you. . . Retzy Thompson!” Students leapt to their feet for a standing ovation, screaming and cheering to exemplify their adoration. A slow chant began in the senior section and spread throughout the entire gymnasium, “Retzy! Retzy! Retzy!” Retzy Thompson bounced across the basketball court, blowing kisses, waving, and placing

her hands over her heart. Brebeuf loves Retzy, and Retzy loves Brebeuf.

After retiring from a 35-year career as an elementary teacher, Loretta “Retzy” Thompson has been Brebeuf ’s favorite substitute teacher for six years, and her vibrant spirit lights up every classroom, hallway, and gymnasium she enters, yet it’s the story behind Retzy’s radiant smile that is the true inspiration, a story of faith despite unimaginable grief. To find the joy in each moment, Retzy lives in honor of her daughter’s wish: “Get out there, Mom.” When Kent and Retzy Thompson welcomed their only daughter Ashley to the world in December of 1982, Retzy shared, “She was the light of our lives from the day she was born.” Known for her warm personality and her free spirit, Ashley was Kent and Retzy’s world as they created an idyllic family life in Zionsville. After graduating from Zionsville High School, Ashley attended Xavier University, where she studied communications and public relations.

With her parents’ unending support, Ashley moved to Cincinnati for her first job, the Public Relations Director for the Florence Freedom baseball team. Just as Ashley’s career began to launch, Retzy began to dedicate her time to volunteering after her retirement as an elementary teacher from Brownsburg Community School Corporation.

FEATURE STORY February 2008. Retzy remembers the call alerting her that Ashley was going to undergo what doctors thought was a routine procedure to remove an abnormal cyst. What the Thompsons first assumed was a benign lump was, in fact, a malignant tumor. Doctors quickly determined the diagnosis—a rare, soft tissue sarcoma, one of the rarest forms of cancer—as rare as Ashley’s vivacious spirit. That diagnosis “just blew us away” because we were “in complete denial” that Ashley, “our world, our everything” could have cancer. In the darkness of Ashley’s first days of diagnosis, Retzy began praying to Mary. “Ashley is a gift to the world. Let her live.”

As the days, weeks, and months passed, the Thompsons dedicated their lives to finding Ashley the best care to save her life. Their journey took them from Cincinnati to New York and then home to Indianapolis in search of top-notch treatments for their animated and beloved daughter. Along their journey, they experienced God’s love and grace through the compassionate doctors, nurses, and caregivers who supported and guided them as Ashley underwent surgeries, radiation, and chemotherapy. It was a “relentless and aggressive disease,” yet despite it all, Retzy fondly recalls that she and Ashley were “stuck together like velcro,” and they supported each other through the hard times.

Throughout the nearly four years of Ashley’s illness, Kent and Retzy relied on faith, love, and strength from family, friends, and their parish. As Ashley’s disease progressed, Retzy’s prayers to Mary continued. “Give me Ashley’s pain. Let her live.”

October 2011. Ashley was living at home with her mom and dad and receiving around-the-clock care to bring her comfort and relief. Even though Retzy didn’t recognize it at the time, they were spending their final days together. Close friends and family traveled long distances to support

Ashley, Retzy, and Kent, and Ashley even planned and attended her 10-year high school reunion for the Zionsville High School Class of 2001. Even amidst the love and support from loved ones, Retzy’s worry grew. She found herself spending more and more time at church, “praying and praying to Mary.” Days before Ashley’s death, Retzy visited the church alcove that provided her the most peace, and she began to realize the unthinkable: Ashley was losing her strong spirit. Retzy pleadingly prayed to Mary, “Give Ashley her joy, energy, and spirit back.

Give it back to her.” Two days later, Ashley passed away peacefully in the loving arms of her parents.

When Ashley died, Kent and Retzy struggled to fill the void in their lives because they “just couldn’t imagine life without Ashley.”

While grappling with the unthinkable loss of her daughter, Retzy could feel that Ashley was always there guiding her; even during Retzy’s toughest times, she could hear Ashley’s voice telling her, “Get out there, Mom. You have so much more to give.” In the darkness of Retzy’s grief, she prayed for the peace and comfort to survive each day, “Not tomorrow. Not next month. Just today.”

Retzy had faith “that help was on the way,” and she prayed and journaled through her most difficult days.

loving grace of Brebeuf students. “Brebeuf kids just made me feel right at home.” Retzy believes that her path to Brebeuf was no accident, and she is confident that Ashley led her to Brebeuf so that she could feel “joy and purpose again.”

Since that day six years ago, Retzy has substituted for countless classes, chaperoned a student trip to France, and even desires to lead a retreat. To Brebeuf, Retzy is a valued member of the community, and to Retzy, Brebeuf is an answered prayer. “Brebeuf students bless me with what I miss most about Ashley: her energy.” Even though there is no substitute for a daughter’s love, the loving embrace of the Brebeuf community is something Retzy cherishes. With every cheer, chant, and clap from the standing ovation the students gave to Retzy, it was a beautiful reminder of Ashley’s love on earth.

On the drive home after her first day of working at Brebeuf and every day since, Retzy reflects, “I’m getting out there, Ashley.”

November 2012. After meeting a friend for coffee on 86th Street, Retzy lamented that she was growing weary of feeling so grief-stricken, sad, and numb. She knew that Ashley would want her to find her own joy once again. While Retzy was leaving the coffee shop that afternoon, she saw a school across the street, Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School, and she decided at that moment to inquire about volunteer opportunities. “I had heard so many positive things about Brebeuf over the years, and I thought I might be able to help in some small way.” Retzy began substitute teaching the next week, and she was immediately impressed by the

Reduced risk of overuse injuries from repetitive motion and decreased burnout and stress are most often cited, along with the advantages of developing cross-sport skills that enhance athletic performance in any sport.

In uniforms bearing the initials ADMG for the Jesuit motto Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam (for the greater glory of God), Brebeuf student athletes are encouraged to maximize their God-given talents for the greater good, a key principle referred to in Ignatian Spirituality as Magis, Latin for “more” or “greater.” At Brebeuf, that means supporting multi-sport participation and paving the way for student athletes to take part in other extracurricular activities in a meaningful way and without repercussions.

“You can come to Brebeuf and have experiences in one or more sports, in band or orchestra, in performing arts, in the classroom and in the chapel, and we strive as a school to help ensure all those experiences are great ones,” he says.

As a freshman, Potts hadn’t considered a spring sport until Brian Hamlett, a Brebeuf track coach, approached her about running track after noting her strong middle school times. Potts, an avid recreational runner, talked it over with her parents and eventually laced up her running shoes to participate in varsity track—a move she says has helped in her primary sport.

“I really think because I ran track, I was faster on the soccer field and because I played soccer, I was better in track,” Potts says. “For me, it was a two-way street, and the track coaches knew that I played club soccer in the spring, so we worked it out.”

Banks, a linebacker and wide receiver in the fall and starting guard on the hardwood in winter, has also experienced benefits from participating in two sports. With assistance from Brebeuf Wellness Center Coordinator Joel Clem, Banks changes up his workout

routine throughout the year, focusing on multiple muscle groups to help avoid overuse and strain.

“Knock on wood hopefully, but one thing I’ve noticed is the kinds of classic injuries athletes get from both of my sports—I haven’t gotten them,” Banks says. “That’s a big thing, but also being able to change mindsets has allowed me to achieve a balance in intensity, which works to my advantage in both football and basketball.”

Being in a smaller school, Clem and the Brebeuf athletics staff have the opportunity to work with student athletes on an individual basis, which contributes not only to improving their physical strength, but also their well-being.

“It’s important to find out what the student athlete’s goal is, and then we can design a program that meets their needs and schedule,” Clem says. “We focus on caring for the whole person, and particularly for

multi-sport athletes, that means supporting them year-round.”

While the physiological and performance benefits of multi-sport participation are real, Hampton says there’s more to Brebeuf ’s philosophy.

“Not only is encouraging multi-sport athletes the route to take from a player safety and scientific standpoint, but it’s also advantageous in my opinion for student

can be a tough balancing act, but Hampton says support from a school community that values the holistic education of every student is what makes the difference.

“One of the first things we tell prospective coaches is our kids are high achievers, and they want to do everything; and then we basically ask the question, ‘are you willing to work with them to make that work?’ If the answer is no, that’s a non-starter for us,” says Hampton. “Winning state championships should be our goal, but it’s not our purpose as a team or a school.”

Because in a world where only a fraction of student athletes participates in competitive sports after high school, what they are able to learn and experience at Brebeuf, both on and off the playing field, matters.

Boys varsity lacrosse head coach Tim Clark agrees. Clark, who has coached lacrosse at the college level, was a two-sport athlete in high school, playing on both the football team and a state champion lacrosse team in New York. He also played on four NCAA national champion lacrosse teams at Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

“When I got into coaching, I personally knew the benefits of playing in multiple sports—being with different groups of people and learning how to get along with others, but also exploring what your athletic

talents and skill sets truly are,” Clark says. “It helps you become a more complete player.”

MAKING IT WORK ON AND OFF THE FIELD While Brebeuf has fielded more winning teams in the past 10 years than ever before, athletics in a college preparatory school known for academic excellence takes its place among many student-centric priorities—education being number one.

STAYING INBOUNDS: Investigator Joyce Thompson-Mills ’91 on Working for the NCAA

For the past 16 years as an attorney with the NCAA Enforcement Services department, Joyce Thompson-Mills has sat across the table from some of the most famous names in college sports. Sometimes the meetings are to investigate alleged violations of NCAA rules; other times, they are simply to help a young student-athlete become eligible to continue playing a game he loves. And while the media and public often gravitate toward the former, it’s the guidance and support parts of her job that ThompsonMills finds most rewarding.

“I like when I’m able to talk to prospective student-athletes and their parents about eligibility—just the rules and regulations they have to follow to be an NCAA athlete,” said Thompson-Mills, a 1991 graduate of Brebeuf Jesuit. “All the aspects of my job are rewarding, but when I have an opportunity to educate people, whether it’s parents, prospects or college administrators, about a process, that’s the part I enjoy the most.”

As Associate Director of Enforcement at the NCAA, Thompson-Mills, who earned a JD degree from Valparaiso University in 1999, serves as the primary contact with university presidents, conference commissioners, member institution legal counsels, athletic directors, coaches, and current and prospective student-athletes and their parents. She’s processed more than 130 cases, including a recruitment monitoring case that involved NCAA and NFL standout Michael Oher, whose personal story was featured in the book, The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game, by Michael Lewis and depicted in the 2009 Hollywood blockbuster, “The Blind Side.” While Thompson-Mills inspired the film’s fictitious NCAA investigator “Jocelyn Granger,” the actual interview with Oher, she says, was nothing like the onscreen portrayal.

“When I interviewed Michael, it was in his home, Mr. Tuohy was there with us, and it was not confrontational at all,” she recalls. “But since then in speaking about The Blind Side or in talking to students, I’ve had the opportunity to explain to them what I really do, which has helped not only turn that false perception around, but also educate people about the role and purpose of our department.”

Because of the nature of the department’s role in ensuring NCAA rules are followed, resulting decisions sometimes spark controversy—something with which Thompson-Mills is personally familiar.

Not a day goes by, she says, when she’s not reminded of the weight and responsibility

of the life-altering decisions she and her colleagues make.

“It’s a difficult job, and we try to do the right thing by people—coaches, players and member institutions,” ThompsonMills explains. “One of the best examples I can give is when we have to investigate a coach for violations. Our decision doesn’t just affect the coach; it affects the assistant coaches, their families, their kids. It’s the fact that this information will now be in the media and their kids are going to have to deal with it. The potential impact of our decisions weighs heavily on me.”

That’s one of the reasons, ThompsonMills explains, case findings and recommendations are highly scrutinized by the department’s internal review board before decisions are handed down.

“When we get ready to send out a notice of allegations, I have to argue my case in front of my peers to make sure the evidence is solid,” she said. “My peers are just as tough, if not more so, than the public or the media.”

Writing What You Love A Profile on Annie Sullivan ’06

When author Annie Sullivan returned to her alma mater this fall to speak to Brebeuf English students, she shared the ins and outs of developing a compelling plot and believable characters. She also talked about having passion for your work—how it developed for her and how it’s essential to becoming a good writer.

“It’s really about writing what you love because that’s what’s going to make it real,” says Sullivan, a 2006 Brebeuf graduate and author of the newly released young adult novel, A Touch of Gold. “If your first book doesn’t sell, write another one that you love; don’t give up.”

Sullivan discovered her passion for writing in college. As an English major at Indiana University, she took several creative writing classes and attended workshops to learn more about the process and her own capacity for storytelling.

“It became clear that I loved writing,” Sullivan recalls. “I had stories that only I could tell and I started to believe that maybe I could really do this.”

While pursuing a master of fine arts degree at Butler University, Sullivan began writing her first novel—a fairytale retelling of the

“The benefit of being in the MFA program is that it gave me time to write and access to people who could provide feedback on my work,” Sullivan says. “I probably would not have started my book if I hadn’t been in that program because I would have been busy doing other things.”

Sullivan says that finishing her first novel, which she worked on for two years while completing her master’s degree, was just the beginning. Calling a writer’s journey to publication a “lonely process,” Sullivan admits she was rejected by nearly 100 literary agents before she found the right fit. A Touch of Gold was published in August, and she has a contract with Blink Publishing for two more books— Tiger Queen, scheduled to hit bookstores in 2019,

and A Curse of Gold, the sequel to her first young adult novel, scheduled for release in 2020.

Asked whether she’s on her way to becoming the next John Green, Sullivan is hopeful, but acknowledges that level of success is hard to attain. Her full-time job as a copywriter at publishing company John Wiley & Sons keeps her grounded and enables her to craft her literary fantasies without worrying about paying the bills.

Still, she’s encouraged by her recent success and believes there’s potential for her personal story to end as her books do.

“Happily ever after—whatever that means for the reader—that’s sort of what my books speak to,” Sullivan explains. “I want people to read my books and come back to the world a little bit changed, a little bit happier, a little bit more hopeful.”

Congratulations to Coach Marty Hill ’70! Marty Hill, Track and Field Coach since 1992 and 1970 graduate, was inducted into the Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches (IATCCC) Hall of Fame on February 2, 2018.

Jeff Hurst ’72, along with his wife, Gena, made their 18th annual delivery for Adam’s Animals. Together, they delivered 5,000 new stuffed animals to several Dallas area hospitals for children with cancer.

This brings the total since 1999 to 70,000 new stuffed animals delivered. Adam’s Animals began on November 14, 1999, on what would have been Jeff ’s son, Adam’s 19th birthday. Adam was diagnosed with leukemia on July 22, 1999 and passed away August 17, 1999. On Adam’s first day in the hospital a friend gave him a stuffed animal he had with him the next 26 days, during chemo and blood transfusions. For his birthday, they started delivering new stuffed animals for the children on the

Jim Sweeney ‘79 has traveled the world serving our country. He is a combat veteran, retired Marine Corps colonel, former law clerk to Judge John Tinder ’68, and retired law partner from Barnes & Thornburg, LLP. In August 2018, he was confirmed as the next United States District Judge for the Southern District of Indiana after a unanimous vote by the United States Senate. Cary Wynne ’05 passed away on December 9, 2017. Following his time at Brebeuf, Cary attended Xavier University and the University of San Diego. He served honorably as a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, and was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. Cary is survived by his parents, Robert and Kathy Wynne of Zionsville, IN, his brother Robby, his sister Georgia, his very significant other Christina Parra, his maternal grandmother, Ida Avery, his

paternal grandparents, John and Barbara Wynne, close aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Nicholas Goble ’07 graduated with his undergraduate degree in Physics from Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, IL May 2011. The summer between his junior and senior years, he was offered a National Science Foundation Grant to do eight weeks of research work at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. This NSF experience, led to his being offered a full PhD scholarship in Experimental Physics along with a cost of living stipend. Nicholas presented several times at the American Physics Society National Convention during his 4.5 years at Case. He graduated earlier than most in his field at Case and presented and defended his thesis successfully in December 2015.

Also, September 13, 2014, he married Mary Dahlberg Goble (English Education degree, 2011, Illinois Wesleyan University...teacher in inner city Cleveland schools). In early February 2016, Nicholas & Mary moved to Kennett Square, PA, where Nicholas began his job as a Quantitative Financial Analyst at Chatham Financial. Within six months, they relocated to a more permanent address in Wilmington, DE with Nicholas enjoying his work as a “Quant” at Chatham and Mary teaching at Salesianum High School in Wilmington, DE, where she teaches on the English staff, molding the minds of 1100 young men. Aaron Banks ’15 is majoring in Engineering at Purdue, plays quarterback for the Boilermakers and was elected President of the Student Body Government!

Michael Joson ’12 was married to William Senat one year ago and they recently celebrated their anniversary.

The two bought a home and William started a new job as the first marketing manager for ScreenBroidery, a local multi-million dollar promotional product distributor, growing at record pace.

Megan Howell ’14 moved to Indiana this summer to begin a fellowship at the University of Notre Dame’s Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE). She will be pursuing a Master’s in Education through Notre Dame over the next two summers and will be a teacher at St. James the Apostle Catholic School in San Antonio, TX during the next two academic years.

Emma DeLaney Strenski ’14, received a Fulbright U.S. Student Program award to Bosnia and Herzegovina in Modern History from the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright

Haleigh Chube ’17 was recently named a William R. Fry Scholar for Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business.

Only 28 freshman were selected for this prestigious award, which is given to directly admitted Kelley School students with preference given to those that are traditionally underrepresented in the field of business. Congratulations Haleigh!

The 2018 Alumni Awards and Hall of Fame Ceremony The 2018 Alumni Awards and Hall of Fame Ceremony hosted by the Brebeuf Jesuit Alumni Board, celebrated the past and present accomplishments of outstanding Brebeuf alumni.

Brebeuf Jesuit President, Fr. Bill Verbryke, S.J. presented the Fr. J. Paul O’Brien, S.J. Service Award to Shaun Clifford ’78 for her constant support and leadership of the Brebeuf community.

Judge John Tinder ’68 presented the Fred B. McCashland Outstanding Alumnus Award to his mentee, Kathleen DeLaney ’86, for her remarkable contribution to the legal profession in Indianapolis.

Layton Payne-Elliott ’98 presented an Athletic Hall of Fame Award to Karl Knerr ’74 for his impressive career leading the Brebeuf Track & Field program.

Brad Riggins ’95 memorialized his dear friend Talbott Sumners ’94 for his deep passion for the sport of hockey and his fierce loyalty to his loved ones with an Athletic Hall of Fame Award.

Last but not least, Head Coach Brian Murray proudly accepted the Athletic Hall of Fame Award on behalf of the 2005 State Champion Girls Volleyball Team.

It was a wonderful night celebrating the lives and accomplishments of some of Brebeuf ’s deserving alumni.
