Dear friends, I trust this finds you and your family enjoying the end of a great summer.

As you may or may not know, I traveled earlier this summer to Spain and Rome, those places which were most important in the life of St. Ignatius of Loyola. In 1539, St. Ignatius and six other extraordinary men approached Pope Paul III about founding a new religious order for men, different from the other already established orders, such as the Benedictines and Franciscans. In 1540, Ignatius and his followers were given permission to commence the Society of Jesus, which became commonly known as “the Jesuits.”

They began as preachers, missionaries and distributors of the Sacraments, which their early constitutional structures encouraged. Yet, within eight years, the Jesuits opened their first school, in Messina, Italy (the first such school in the history of the Catholic Church) and, by 1556 (the year St. Ignatius died), the Jesuits had established 30 schools in Italy alone. Georgetown Academy, the very first Jesuit school in North America, was also the very first Catholic school in the United States, which, over time, evolved into Georgetown University. Throughout our nearly 500-year history, in addition to our sacramental and pastoral ministries, the Jesuits have made extraordinary strides in the areas of education, science, the arts, social justice and inter-religious dialogue. For centuries, our network of Jesuit schools has been – and continues to be – the largest network of private and Catholic schools in the world. Like Brebeuf Jesuit, the first Jesuit schools, in both Italy and America, were open to people of all faiths, backgrounds and social classes, which, I imagine, immediately began the kind of inclusivity and dialogue that St. Ignatius and his followers envisioned for the Society of Jesus and the communities with whom they lived and worked.

The courage and tenacity of my brother Jesuits, through the ages, overwhelms me. They have been both favored and suppressed by Popes and Kings. In 1773, Pope Clement XIV sided with the Monarchs of Portugal, Spain and France to suppress the Society of Jesus globally. This meant that they were stripped of their ministries, assets, properties, Jesuit communities, and 800 schools, in Europe, the Americas and all of their missions around the world. Jesuits were literally left as paupers, if they managed to avoid arrest, and could not minister as priests. The universal restoration of the Society of Jesus came on August 7, 1814, through the benevolence of Pope Pius VII, and the Jesuits instantly picked up their lost ministry of education to young laymen. They opened new schools in a new world culture and heroically continued the work that had become synonymous with the Society of Jesus.

One of the fundamental purposes of the creation of the Society of Jesus, in the mind and heart of St. Ignatius, was for the help of souls; that being, helping to bring people to a richer relationship with God. A sacred and noble enterprise, indeed, and schools seemed the perfect conduit to achieve this purpose.

I feel very blessed that I was assigned to come to Brebeuf Jesuit four years ago, to help bring our own students to a richer relationship with God, which often comes in baby steps. I believe we accomplish that daily, not always in bright and shiny ways, but, most often through kindness, empathy and quiet, reflective faithfulness.

We are a school much like our Jesuit ancestors, wholeheartedly welcoming with open arms students and families from different faiths, neighborhoods and perspectives on the world. And we welcome them as Jesus and the first Jesuits did with those who peopled their lives. I am excited and eagerly anticipating welcoming all of you to Brebeuf Jesuit for the 2016-2017 school year, where as a community, we live our mission in our unique, Jesuit way, in the service of others.

SUMMER RENOVATIONS Brebeuf Jesuit will begin the school year with the opening of the newly renovated Science Wing. The Science Wing was the final phase of the Leading the Way capital campaign and will complete the renovation efforts of all academic spaces at Brebeuf Jesuit. The science renovation efforts totaled $1.7 million and included classrooms, laboratories, and an academic center.

The existing five laboratories were renovated with new lighting, chemical storage, fume hood repairs, eyewash stations, technology enhancements and work space for students. A new Life Science laboratory and classroom was added to create expanded space for this discipline.

Five existing classrooms were renovated to improve upon the learning space and accessibility for our students with new flooring, lighting, furniture, paint and technology. Each year, approximately 75 students “double up” on science coursework and have thereby created a greater demand for space and resources. The new classroom and life science laboratory will assist with the increased demand for learning space.

The Academic Center for our Science faculty has been transformed to better serve as the nucleus for interactive relationships, mentoring, and collaboration that takes place outside of the traditional classroom setting.

One hundred percent of the funding for these renovations were received from generous parents, alumni and friends of the Brebeuf Jesuit community. Great appreciation is extended to all those who have participated in the Leading the Way campaign.

In addition to this renovation, a few offices have relocated: Nick Klingler, Directory for Community Service, has moved his office to the first floor, just outside of the Chapel in the Main Lobby.

Mary Ann Wallace, Director for Campus Ministry, will now be located in The Student Commons.

Jessica Rewa, previous Assistant Campus Minister, will now be joining the Brebeuf Jesuit faculty as a Religious Studies Teacher. Sam Glowinski and Briana Haler will be joining the Campus Ministry Team and sharing Ms. Rewa’s former office.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

SPIRIT STORE HOURS The Spirit Store’s grand re-opening will take place on August 3! Visit the new location in the Principal’s Office Hallway across from the Business Office. Special hours for the new school year are as follows: August 3-5: Open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

August 10: Open from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

August 11-19: Open from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

August 22 and later: Normal operating hours from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

BOOK ORDERS Books can now be ordered at MBS through the link provided in both the email you received earlier this month. Be sure to have your student’s schedule handy to reference course numbers.

Freshman and Transfer Student Orientation Freshman and Transfer Student Orientation will take place on Wednesday, August 10 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This orientation is mandatory for all incoming freshmen and transfer students. PARENT ORIENTATION FOR FRESHMEN AND TRANSFER STUDENTS All parents of incoming students are invited to attend Parent Orientation in the Brebeuf Jesuit Chapel on August 10 from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. This is a great chance to come out and meet other new parents. All of the information you will need as a new Brebeuf parent will be covered!

SCHEDULE CHANGE DAYS Schedule changes may be available for your student. All schedule changes are subject to availability. Teacher requests and break requests are not permitted during schedule changes. Schedule changes are available through the summer by contacting the Principal’s Office (smedcalfe@brebeuf.org).

Schedule Change Day for students with their Academic Counselor is August 8 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Large Group Instruction Room (LGI). Drop/Add Days for students are available on August 12 and 15 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. (except during the Day 2 PRTs) in the Academic Counseling Offices.

LOCKER ASSIGNMENTS The 2016-2017 locker assignment list will be posted outside the Dean’s Office on Tuesday, August 9 at 9:00 a.m. Students are welcome to organize their lockers and bring in their books after that time.

ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES Reporting accurate attendance in a timely manner is a very important responsibility of each student/ family. In each instance that a student is absent, a parent/guardian must report that absence by calling the Dean’s Office attendance line at 317.524.7118 and leaving a detailed message, or by sending in a written note/doctor’s office excuse with the student. The student may pick up a pass in the Dean’s Office to be released from class. No student will be released without notification from a parent/guardian.

NOTE FROM THE DEAN’S OFFICE In conjunction with the rigorous curriculum at Brebeuf, student attendance is imperative. Students are expected to be at school for each and every class.

Our students are balancing a variety of situations, including stressful workload, athletics, extra-curricular clubs and college decisions. Even with all of these things, students are expected to make attending classes a priority. A student loses out on valuable information and time when not attending classes; therefore, their grades may suffer. Please be mindful of this expectation and help instill in our students that this is a priority for all of us. Students that miss an extraordinary amount of classes can/will be subject to reviews by the Dean and Principal, strict attendance requirements and disciplinary probation (see student handbook). A student-athlete also must be present at school to take part in athletic contests and practices.

STUDENT PARKING Students driving to school are required have a Brebeuf parking tag displayed on their car window. Students must register their car with the Dean’s Office (license plate, car make and model) and get a tag. Students should have car registration information with them when they come to get their school ID. STUDENT IDENTIFICATION Student ID photos will be taken in the Dean’s Office on: Monday, August 8 – 1:00-4:00 p.m.

Tuesday, August 9 – 12:00-4:00 p.m.

Wednesday, August 10 – 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and 1:00-3:00 p.m.

Reminder: students must have a current year ID card with them as they enter school on their first day. No photos or images of ID cards will be accepted.

CAFETERIA Brebeuf Jesuit partners with Aladdin Foods to manage the school’s food service. As an efficient way to keep the line moving during meal payment transactions, students are encouraged to use the swipe card system again this year. In order to check card balances and load a payment on a student’s existing account, visit payforit.net. First-time users can create an account on payforit.net using their child’s student ID number and the Patron ID that was sent to all new families in July.

UNDERCLASSMEN PICTURES Underclassmen pictures will be taken on Monday, September 12 in the Auditorium. All freshmen, sophomores, and juniors should stop in the Auditorium on their break to have their photo taken. More information will be sent to families prior to this date.

TOTEM YEARBOOKS Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School purchases a yearbook for every student each year. The 2015-2016 Totem was distributed to all students in the Cafeteria during lunch periods in May. Questions or concerns?

SENIOR PICTURES All members of the Class of 2017 must sit for their formal yearbook portrait with Cilento Lifetouch Photography

by November 11, 2016. Failure to schedule and sit for your portrait by November 11 will mean that your senior will not be featured in the 2016-2017 yearbook. The yearbook must be to our printer in pieces throughout the year, with specific deadlines for each part. Therefore, no exceptions can be made for absent-minded seniors.

Don’t let your student be left out of this keepsake. A yearbook-only session is provided at no charge until September 1, 2016. After that point, there will be a yearbook-only portrait sitting fee. Cilento provides the wrap the ladies wear and the tuxedo top the gentlemen wear. You are NOT required to use Cilento for your child’s personal senior photos – just the yearbook photo. Please email the Yearbook Instructor, Mrs. Sarah O’Keefe, at sokeefe@brebeuf.org SAFETY PROCEDURES In our continuing effort to provide a safe and secure environment for Brebeuf students, we collaborate with the Indiana School Safety Specialists Academy and

conform with best practices in monitoring access to the building during the school day. At the beginning, during, and at the end of the school day, students must enter and exit the building through the Gym Lobby only. The single East Gym Lobby door opens at 7:00 a.m. Access before 7:00 a.m. and after 4:30 p.m. must be arranged with a staff member. Student IDs, acquired through the Dean’s Office, are required and must be presented to the Gym Lobby prefect upon entering throughout the school day. Adult visitors enter and register with the receptionist in the Main Lobby. Students are expected to be picked up by 4:30 p.m. (if not involved with after school activities). The cafeteria is available for study and students must exit the building at 4:30 p.m. Please plan accordingly.

DAILY MASS Mass is held at 7:45 a.m., Monday – Friday during the school year, and parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends are welcome to attend.

STUDENT FAMILY DIRECTORY ON PORTALS The 2016 – 2017 Student Family Directory is located on Portals. All families are automatically opted into the directory. To opt out or alter what information can be viewed, select the arrow to the right of your name on the top header row on Portals and choose Directory Listing. REDIKER PARENTPLUS and STUDENTPLUS PORTALS Portals offers access to grades, schedules and class information. For new parents, login credentials have been emailed to your contact emails. Returning parents and students can use their login information from last school year. New students received their login information via their AMDG.brebeuf.org student email account. ATHLETIC PASSES Individual all-season athletic passes will be available for sale at the ticket sales counter at every home game this year. The cost for the all-season pass is $100.

These passes are available now in the Athletics Office.

Students are admitted free to games with an ID, but due to limited seating at some games, entry may be restricted. More information about athletic passes and the new Braves Athletic Club can be found at brebeuf.org/bac B.Y.O.T. (Bring Your Own Technology) To facilitate 21st Century teaching and learning within the Jesuit context, Brebeuf created the state’s first 1:1 Bring Your Own Technology environment in 2012. Under this expanding program, all students are expected to carry a device of their choosing that will enable them to research, create, and present new information as a part of their learning process at Brebeuf.
