To all who will be joining us in Bremen, Breakbulk Europe, the world’s largest event for the project cargo and breakbulk industry is heading to Bremen, Germany, for the first time in its 13-year history. Host port is bremenports—Bremen and Bremerhaven—Germany’s largest port for breakbulk cargoes. Maritime industry and logistics are at the core of Bremen’s economy with the ports in Bremen and Bremerhaven as its source. Our port infrastructure does not only handle containers and automobiles with ease, but is also specialized to handle breakbulk. Within the State of Bremen, many well established and highly dedicated companies guarantee excellent service and quality in breakbulk handling. With this in mind, it is an honor to be awarded as host location for the Breakbulk Europe in 2018. At the same time, it is an encouragement for us to set a new benchmark. The trade show venue in Bremen will provide participants of the Breakbulk Europe 2018 with perfect conditions. From the Bremen airport, the city center and the venue can be reached within a few minutes. The city itself with its historic ambiance offers the perfect conditions with an exhibition area of 25.000 square

meters, parking lots, hotel facilities, bars, restaurants and special venues all within a walking distance of just 15 minutes. As many of the activities will take place directly on the market square, the living room of our city, I am sure that the Breakbulk Europe will profit from a real family atmosphere. I am convinced that organizers, exhibitors and visitors of the Breakbulk will remember the unique atmosphere of Bremen for a long time to come. As Minister of Economic Affairs, Labour and Ports, I am looking forward to welcoming you in Bremen. Sincerely,
Martin Günthner Minister of Economic Affairs, Labour and Ports of the Federal State of Bremen, Germany
Bremen’s town hall is regarded as the jewel in the crown of the historical market square. The Upper Hall, where the city council used to convene, is the most magnificent ceremonial venue in Bremen. The model ships that hang from the ceiling bear witness to the importance of commerce and maritime trade for the city.
BREAKBULK EUROPE PREVIEW 2018 3
Welcome to Bremen! The Federal Land of Bremen is the smallest of the 16 German states and comprises the cities of Bremen and Bremerhaven. Bremen has a strong economic basis. More Mercedes cars roll off the assembly line in Bremen than anywhere else in the world. Bremen is also a prominent aerospace location. The worldfamous Becks beer originates from Bremen. But the heart of Bremen’s economy is still the maritime business. Every fifth job in the Federal Land of Bremen is dependent on the ports. Every year, well over 2 million cars are shipped from Bremerhaven to destinations all over the world. The five-kilometre long quay on the bank of the River Weser offers ideal logistics conditions for container throughput.
4 BREAKBULK EUROPE PREVIEW 2018
In the city of Bremen itself, break bulk cargo handling is one of the core elements of the port business. It is in this sector that Neustädter Hafen in particular – Germany’s southernmost seaport and one of the largest European terminals for general and heavy-lift cargo – plays a central role, now and in future.
The Breakbulk Europe 2018 fits in perfectly with the maritime profile of the Federal Land of Bremen. Together with our partners from Bremen’s trade fair organisation team and the city’s tourist office, we will be an excellent host for attendees from all over the globe. Welcome to Bremen,
But Bremen also has a great deal to offer as a venue for trade fairs and conferences, such as perfect transport connections from the centrally located airport to the trade fair and exhibition grounds, which can also be reached on foot from the city centre in just a few minutes. The market square with its impressive historic buildings is regarded as one of the most beautiful in the whole of northern Europe.

JN: Can you tell us about yourself and how your work has crossover with the maritime industry, particularly as it relates to energy and shipping?
broadcasting to try and help business make the great shift that we’re already undergoing in the energy transition, and help them in dealing with climate change.
GW: I started off as a scientist, climate science in particular, and moved into writing and broadcasting. I’ve written four books and a lot of magazine articles, then made many radio and television programs. From that I moved first into working with policy makers and then with businesses. The work I do mainly involves combining the analytical approach that comes from being a scientist with the more storytelling approach of writing and
You asked about the relationship to shipping and of course it’s huge. Also to the energy industry – I’ve done a lot of work with both. And I’m secretly captivated by the ocean. If it’s shipping, I always want to say “yes.” I’ve spent a little time on the high seas myself in strange places like the Arctic and Antarctica, which I’ve visited several times by ship. There’s nothing like the ocean. So I’m very happy to be able to join Breakbulk.
I talked about the energy transition and climate change, and that’s obviously affecting every sector on Earth, particularly the shipping industry. I think there are ways in which shipping is at the forefront of the direct effects of climate change that we’re already experiencing. It’s also at the forefront of many of the technological changes and I believe it can be a be a very significant player in providing solutions. JN: We’ve spoken a little about how important the global energy industry is to project transport and logistics and that is greatly influenced by investment

in large capital projects – refineries, petrochemical plants, energy generation. How do you see these types of projects evolving in the near term and in the far term? GW: I heard a brilliant quote the other day: “Predictions are either lucky or wrong.” Bearing that in mind, I can make some predictions. I already said that the shipping industry is in the forefront, and the same applies to the big capital projects that Breakbulk is all about. Mark Carney, the governor of the Bank of England and chair of the Financial Stability Board, has been warning about some specific risks that he sees to financial stability around the world. First, the way climate change can directly affect assets. Things like storms, droughts, floods can impact large infrastructure. When you think about capital projects, already they are having to build into their process how the installation is going to be resilient to the climate changes we’re already Register at www.breakbulk.com/bbeu2018
experiencing. We’ve seen a very significant increase in the intensity of storms, droughts, wildfires, etc. I think that’s going to be an important factor. We are also going through a very dramatic energy transition at the moment. I haven’t heard a single CEO at an energy company who thinks the energy system is going to be the same in 2030 or 2040. Given that there is this great transition, in some cases there is a transition toward more decentralization with renewable energy. The implication of that may be there will be less of a need for large capital projects because there’s more capacity for countries to implement their own energy and not have to transport it and also do it on a smaller scale. At the same time, I think that if we’re going to solve this climate problem, we’re going to need very large amounts of some new technologies such as carbon capture and storage, which by definition is not centralized. You have to have places where you
can collect concentrated amounts of carbon dioxide and then you have to be able to transport it and bury it. If we do as much as we’ll need to get to two degrees, it will be the equivalent to capturing, transporting and burying the same number of molecules that we currently extract and transport in the entire hydrocarbon industry. So I think you could get one kind of large capital project shifting to another, i.e. to capital projects aimed at carbon capture. The third part of it is the development of new technologies. In terms of transportation, things like 3D printing brings the possibility of manufacturing locally which can change the need for some of the kinds of transportation, which can knock on to the kinds of installations that are being put up around the world. We are in a time of great change. It befits the most flexible and dynamic of companies and sectors. The ones who really try to dig into the old ways and don’t want to change, are the ones that are going to lose. JN: What do you see ahead for the Arctic? Opening of shipping lanes? What might surprise us? GW: Another secret thing about me is that I’m an ice addict. I’ve been to both poles many times and sailed in the Arctic Ocean as well. It’s already opening up. It won’t be very long until we have an open Arctic in the summer. That’s obviously going to have implications, but I think it’s unlikely that there will be a big dash for oil in the Arctic given the way the energy transition
is going—the price of renewables is plummeting and the drive toward electrification of transport is drastically increasing. But I do think that new shipping lanes between Europe and Asia are likely and there may be a few things that could be quite surprising. As the ice melts, I see the Arctic becoming a major new fishery. There are some who say we can get our transportation fuel through algae. The Arctic is very rich in nutrients. When the sea ice rolls back, you’ll get a lot of nutrients. So you might see something as wacky as the Arctic opening up not to be a source of oil, but to be a massive farm for algae. JN: What are you expecting from Breakbulk? GW: From the way that you’ve described Breakbulk, I see a story of inventive people who like solving big problems, who just don’t go the normal, common way, who don’t do things by routine, who think big, and those are all of my favorite characteristics. I’m looking forward to meeting some very interesting people and having a great time!

BUILDING
AN INNOVATION CULTURE AT JN: How does an “innovation culture” differ from more traditional ways of doing business, and why might management be reluctant to embrace this approach?
A conversation with Marjolein Boer, Innovation Manager with the Port of Rotterdam Authority, and Janet Nodar, Breakbulk Events & Media Content Director
MB: Innovation culture is very adaptive—it is open to and ready to act on new information all the time. It’s about learning and evolving, approaching projects iteratively rather than in a linear fashion. It’s starting with a vision and then using proof of concepts and pilots to create a “minimum viable product” so learningby-doing, after which the concept can be scaled up. Ideally, it is self-organizing and even self-steering, which makes empowerment at the right level essential. An innovation culture believes we cannot and should not want to do it all on our own. In an innovation culture, we are opening up to the outside world to accelerate things we are working on, and
10 BREAKBULK EUROPE PREVIEW 2018
filling gaps in our innovation agenda like discovering new ways of doing business and new partners. Mostly, I think it’s a matter of letting go of control and steering from a vision, meaning letting go of a fixed year plan and being open to change every day. For us, maintaining our role as the smartest port means taking the lead in developments that are crucial in realizing a carbon neutral and smart port. We are always on the lookout for ideas to make the port safer, more sustainable and more efficient. JN: The challenge for a lot of people is probably the idea of letting go of control and learning this more organic approach. Was it difficult to persuade top management that an innovation culture was a good choice? MB: Buy-in was crucial. As the innovation manager, I needed top management support to operate from
a mandate with the necessary resources. In my case it wasn’t difficult at all to convince the top management of the Port of Rotterdam Authority because they were already in and convinced of a need for an innovation culture. They saw the changing world. The fact is that we’re dealing with more and more questions rather than implementing large projects as in the past. We see many opportunities, but to actually grab these opportunities, it requires a different way of working than we were used to. The main challenge when I started was how to involve the organization while linking the internal and external worlds. The challenges were so big that the solution was not just setting up an innovation department, but changing the way we look at the port—at challenges, at opportunities, and in how

THE PORT OF ROTTERDAM we approach these these things and turn them into business value. And we needed the entire company to participate. The port is really, really big with so many different potential areas of business, and we need all areas of expertise— existing and new—to grab new opportunities. At the Port of Rotterdam, we have a long history of innovation and pioneering. The drive to constantly develop new solutions and
smart technologies, is in our DNA. Those that have been at the port a long time have been crucial assets in building our innovation culture. Their knowledge and passion they bring is a true asset that we can use. I’m sure we don’t have everybody on board yet, but that’s OK. You need to move a certain critical mass to start change. Changing a company culture can take years. JN: Can you give some examples of how an

innovative approach has created efficiencies or solved difficult problems at the port? MB: We have many examples, so please stop me if I give too many! We recently launched an important digital proposition called Pronto, which means, Port Call Optimization. It’s a system to optimize the duration of port calls by providing all parties involved with real time information, so they can optimize their activities
around the ship. Shipping companies have already calculated this can lead to a 20 percent increase in efficiency and the potential to save huge amounts of money. Another great example is Autonomous Shipping Field Lab, aka our Floating Lab that we are in the midst of launching at this moment with several partners. In this lab, we will test new technology around autonomous shipping. We want to answer questions

like, “What does the port of the future need to accommodate autonomous ships?” and “What does it mean for communication with those ships?” JN: How has the innovation culture led to leading edge projects such as RDM and the RAMLAB? MB: RDM is a great example of bringing innovation to life. This is where you feel the energy of companies, students, startups, educational facilities working together to develop innovative solutions for the port of the future. RDM is a result of our two-fold approach to innovation. On
one hand we take the lead in strategic trends that will shape the port of the future, such as the energy transition and digitization, but we also take on the role of context architect enabling others to help us to shape the port of the future. So we take the lead in shaping the future ourselves and we invite others to join us. JN: Can you describe RDM? MB: RDM is a place where education, experimentation and business come together. It is a showcase and accelerator of innovation in the port and it’s built in the former shipyard of the Rotterdam Drydock

Company (RDM). Companies of different sizes ranging from startups to world players in the maritime and offshore industry have established themselves at RDM to develop, manufacture, test and demonstrate prototypes and new products. The combination creates an inspiring atmosphere and it’s the perfect setting to make great things happen.
We aren’t doing all of this innovation on our own— we need lots of partners, internally and externally. This active network of business partners in the Port of Rotterdam area is one of the most crucial assets for our ecosystem, helping to ensure that Rotterdam Port is the world’s hotspot for industry innovation.
JN: How about RAMLAB?
THURSDAY, 31 MAY, 14:00 – 14:45
MB: RAMLAB was set up as a field lab to experiment with 3D printing of marine spare parts. We saw the trend of 3D printing and weren’t sure what this would mean for the port, but we knew we wanted to learn more about 3D printing of metal parts. The investment in a 3D metal printer was huge, so we decided open the project to different parties. We started with 15 and now have around 20 or more companies that have joined. RAMLAB recently delivered the first 3D-printed propeller to Damen shipyards.

DISRUPTION AHEAD FOR PROJECT LOGISTICS VIA BLOCKCHAIN JN: There seem to be many logistics service providers in our sector scrambling to figure out what ‘digitization’ means and to create their own systems. Do you see this happening, and what are the implications?
A conversation with Frank Bolten, Managing Director of CHAINSTEP GmbH, and Janet Nodar, Breakbulk Events & Media Content Director

16 BREAKBULK EUROPE PREVIEW 2018
FB: Transport logistics overall is a very diverse field, and it’s definitely not easy to digitize the total field. On the other hand, we see a lot of movement all over the place in digitization – in manufacturing and on the consumer side. In every area there is pressure to speed up processes, to make them more efficient and to make them more secure. I’m pretty sure that digitization will be more and more of a topic and will be implemented across many sectors. It will be very important that at the end, it’s seamless. There will be different systems that need to be integrated for everything to work together
smoothly. It’s definitely not an easy task, but something which is growing and will come step by step. JN: How can blockchain apply specifically to transport logistics? FB: Blockchain can help in several areas. So first of all, blockchain is simply a further layer to the internet protocol. It brings to the internet something that was missing: making direct transactions via the web. If I sent you a picture via the internet, I didn’t do this – I sent you a copy. Via blockchain I can send you the picture and I don’t have it anymore and you have it. With this system, you have the potential to decrease intermediary structures, to make processes more transparent, to make transactions much more secure, and to make them faster and more efficient. Of
course, that sounds easier than it is, but the potential is definitely massive. Within our industry, I can transfer an asset via blockchain, so no bookkeeping in between is necessary. The decentralized concept of blockchain technology and the synchronization of the databases means an asset is actually transferred without having an intermediary. JN: Project and breakbulk logistics are notoriously idiosyncratic. Each cargo move is different, especially for complex mega-projects. I’ve heard people say project transport can’t be digitized, but there are many people who disagree. Where do you stand? FB: It is very often complicated but it is always possible. When things are possible and might bring benefit, there will always be

parties that try to make it happen. First of all, there will be demand from the customers, the suppliers and the end users. They will demand to have advantages out of the digitization. On the other side there will be—and already are today—key players who have started to understand and work on digitalization on their own to find ways to make processes much more streamlined, efficient and automated.
I want to give you one example. I worked in the IT distribution field two decades ago, and the differences in the scope of work between then and now is astonishing. Twenty years ago, an IT distributor bought boxes and sold boxes. Today, an IT distributor is a process organization. While they still are the entity that handles all the goods, today they handle so much more in the process between

the IT manufacturers and the customer. They make configurations, they make build-to-order, supply to a desk, installation, and all of these kinds of things. And they do it all with this super slim margin because they are highly automated. You have these big companies, many coming from the US like Ingram Micro and Tech Data that are connected to the huge companies like HP

and IBM. I’m pretty sure that in a way, the total transport logistics sector is moving in this direction. Project logistics is much more complicated, but I’m convinced that step-by-step companies and the industry at large will become more process-oriented and automated. It will not happen in days, weeks or months but if we look five years further, we’ll see massive changes.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE END-TO-END OPTIMIZATION CASE STUDY
BY PROF. DR. SVEN HERMANN, Managing Director, ProLog Innovation GmbH
Why attend this session? You’ll learn about the opportunities of open innovation, the importance of combining new work with the aim of developing new logistics solutions, and the possibility of advanced technologies that finally give us the chance for extensive end-to-end optimization in project logistics. End-to-end optimization in breakbulk cargo supply chains, in particular project logistics, for us here in Germany is a complex but not a new aim. We combine the idea of open innovation with the target of developing digital solutions for analyzing and planning packaging and transport decisions from the total cost perspective.
The project we will discuss at Breakbulk Europe involves a well-known freight owner from Germany, a logistics service provider, an innovation consulting company with experts from science and professionals of dynamic real time optimization in logistics. Based on the concepts and methods of new works, our optimization approach reaches from design to logistics to building information modeling and from design stage to the construction site. Many types of companies can benefit from this process, especially small- to mediumsized logistics companies. It means developing new ideas and prototypes together with customers, supported by universities and nurturing startups and talents in projectbased, virtual and temporary digi-labs. For freight owners, this case study could be an interesting example to see how shared cooperative optimization with service providers could lead to better processes and potential digital innovations. End-to-end optimization is a promising alternative for working on a company’s performance, digital competence and future business model. This may seem a bit complicated, but in the end, it’s about prototyping cases for augmented reality, 3D-printing and other new technologies.

SEIZING OPPORTUNITY IN THE CARRIER SECTOR Much has been written about Zeaborn’s drive to expand and invest in ships, used or new, as well as in time chartered tonnage. Here Ove Myer, managing partner of Zeaborn Group, explains the company’s strategy and shares his outlook on wider industry challenges ahead.

ur aim when we started four and a half years ago was to build an integrated shipping company. That started from the asset side and ended up with the commercial management side because the employment of ships and direct access to freight and cargo is absolutely essential. Providing our customers with a stable fleet means it’s absolutely necessary that we control the technical environment on the ships, the technical management and the asset itself on a long-term basis.
20 BREAKBULK EUROPE PREVIEW 2018
We are trying to do these things in parallel right now by organic growth and by acquisition of companies. In the last couple of months, we bought two of the biggest ship managers here in Germany, which came as a coincidence. By last year when we reached a point fleetwise that we had to make a decision to make or buy an international outfit to get closer to the customers on a global scale, that is when we acquired Rickmers-
Line—our first charter at the time. During that postmerger integration there was the insolvency of Rickmers Holding that offered the opportunity of getting hold of one of the bigger German ship managers. With the second acquisition of ER Schiffahrt that we signed a few months ago, it was already the intention two years ago to merge these companies, but that failed at that time. Now we have taken the opportunity and hopefully made that happen.

especially when it comes to the multipurpose fleet. It is no big secret that 80 percent of the worldwide available tonnage is under distress or in financially troubled waters. There will be further acquisitions from ourselves and from other private institutional investors. Expect a lot of merger and acquisition activities.
Where Are the Opportunities for Sea Transport?
There will also be activity on the corporate side on both smaller ship managers and bigger ones where there is a huge need for consolidation. The same goes on the commercial side, but there, we are lacking a few targets when it comes to the multipurpose sector. Joining forces is a topic.
We also see some investments in oil and gas industry in certain countries, but these cargoes they will come from all over the world. A lot of these things are still produced in Asia. When it comes to the US and bigger investment plans that we have heard about in the last couple of
Register at www.breakbulk.com/bbeu2018
There will be growth regions, but not necessarily the regions where the cargoes are coming from. We see fast-growing economics and developments on the project side that will be kicking in 24 months from now.
Partner’s Perspective: A Conversation with Zeaborn Moderator: Carly Fields, News Editor, Breakbulk Events & Media Ove Meyer, Managing Partner, Zeaborn Group Jan Hendrik Többe, Managing Partner, Zeaborn Group
weeks under the Trump regime, there will be huge infrastructure investments and even if there are trade barriers, most of these products will come from the Far East. So, there will be a stronger trade lane from Far East to the Americas. We believe Europe will continue on a good level, but the overall output is still not 100 percent sufficient. A big source of cargoes will continue from the energy industry, especially wind. We see an increase in volumes—it looks quite good. Still, a lot of these cargoes are carried by bulkers and containers, but that will change in the next 18 months or so.
Potential Disruptors? Foreseeable disruptors are not the problem, the problem is if you don’t see them coming! Like a couple of years ago when the oil price was falling so significantly and we had a big crash, but right now I don’t see any bigger things. There is always the risk of political instability worldwide which could cause less cargoes or different cargoes, but bigger interrupters, I don’t really see that. The main problem we have in the MPP sector is the competition from the container and bulk side still operating on these extremely low rates and that they are handling the project cargoes.

BREAKBULK EUROPE PREVIEW 2018 21
THE CHANGING LANDSCAPE OF COMPLIANCE
T
rade compliance, at its heart, is about the values a country chooses to adopt and how it seeks to project them. It can do this in a variety of ways ranging from the enactment of sanctions, designed to constrain or coerce another country or regime into changing its behaviour, through to the enacting of robust human rights legislation or the aggressive enforcement of anti-bribery violations.
Insight from Kathy Canaan, Global Director Trade Compliance for Fluor, and Sarah Klein, a partner with Kirkland & Ellis International LLP 22 BREAKBULK EUROPE PREVIEW 2018
Each country, indeed block of countries, takes a different approach to these sets of issues which is reflected in the different compliance standards they’ve adopted around the world. Compliance may not always be easy when you have multiple competing regimes, however, it is integral to any well run, outward-facing business.
Will Brexit have any impact on the compliance sector?
Major Trends in the Use of Sanctions and Embargoes
Irrespective of which model the UK ultimately adopts post-Brexit, it is clear that Brexit could potentially result in a de-harmonisation of the regulatory landscape between the UK and the rest of Europe. The UK’s drive in recent years to tackle corruption through aggressive Bribery Act enforcement and commence sanctions enforcement through the establishment of the new Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation, could suggest that the UK may seek to align itself post-Brexit more closely with the US approach to regulation and enforcement. Either way, for those doing business with the UK, an understanding of the UK regulatory regime going forward will be crucial. So, watch this space!
Aside from the increased use of sanctions programs and associated designations, we see several trends that can affect global players: Enforcement is increasing. Not only in the United States, but also in the UK and EU. While sanctions and embargoes enforcement has historically focused on the banking and insurance industry sectors, there has been a noticeable uptick in enforcement cases that touch other industry sectors. The imposition of secondary sanctions has and will very likely continue to increase. Secondary sanctions are complicated for multinational companies and prohibited facilitation risks are on the rise because of them. Register at www.breakbulk.com/bbeu2018

Perhaps of greatest concern is the divergence of sanctions programs between the US, the EU, and potentially post-Brexit UK. As national and regional priorities and policies change, so too do sanctions programs. As this happens, the regulatory landscape for multinational companies will become increasingly rocky.
Rise of “Smart Sanctions” While comprehensive embargoes do still exist, the evolution of “smart” sanctions has created multiple new frameworks for future sanctions designations. While not necessarily new, the sectoral sanctions developed in response to the conflict in Ukraine set into motion the use of other targeted sanctions programs. Comprehensive embargoes can have unwanted detrimental effects on a populace, but not necessarily the persons in power who create the foreign policy conflicts. Sanctions programs
that provide for the targeting of individuals and entities involved in conflict, abuses, and criminal activities are proving more effective.
On the Horizon The new generation of sanctions programs such as Magnitsky, cyber-related sanctions, and intellectual property sanctions provide multiple avenues to advance or protect national security, foreign policy human rights and economic interests. These programs provide a wide range of tools that can be used to indirectly influence the behavior of antagonistic regimes. The importance of appropriate due diligence on any third parties with whom a company transacts business has never been more important. Demonstrating aggressive and proactive compliance programs will be the norm.

This logistics-centric course will provide a summary review of international trade controls, economic sanctions, and customs principles from European Union and United States perspectives. Designed for intermediate level practitioners, the curriculum will focus on the differences in EU and US policies, how to recognize and mitigate risks, practical application of compliance controls, global trade compliance trends, and enforcement cases which demonstrate the extra-territorial nature of international trade control laws.
Who should attend this course? The course is designed for professionals who have some basic knowledge about trade compliance requirements, but whose primary responsibility within their companies isn’t necessarily trade compliance. We are hoping to reach operations personnel, managers and sales staff involved in the transportation industry and those that utilize the services of logistics services companies.
What practical knowledge will you gain? 1. How global trade compliance obligations affect your business 2. How the trade compliance landscape is changing and what that may mean for your business going forward 3. HOW WILL SULPHUR 2020 AFFECT OUR INDUSTRY?
WITH ROGER STREVENS, Trident Alliance Chairman and Head of Sustainability, WWL
Listen on Soundcloud
CONFERENCE SESSION
WEDNESDAY, 30 MAY, 14:30 – 15:15
Discussion Session: Ocean-Going Issues Discussion Leader: Roger Strevens, Trident Alliance Chairman; Global Head of Sustainability, Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics Ove Meyer, Managing Partner, Zeaborn Group Stian Omli, Global Gead of Breakbulk Sales, Höegh Autoliners Peter Sandberg, Managing Director, SAL-Heavylift Finland
Starting with the very short term, the reduction in sulfur limits for global shipping will have an impact on the project and heavy lift market pretty soon. That’s really going to kick in in 2020 when the global capping begins—dropping from today’s level of 3.5 percent to 0.5 percent sulfur. Most vessels are going to switch the type of fuel they’re using. When you switch fuel, you’re going to have a range of different considerations to think about from the technical to the operational to the economic. Combined, these factors amount to a considerable amount of uncertainty. My best advice is for all of the stakeholders to think of that well ahead of time. Moving slightly further out into the medium term, the issue of reducing CO2 is going to have a big impact on us all. I see that playing out in two different arenas—first for the kind of cargo that I expect that the project and cargo logistics market will be dealing with. The profile is probably going to change because as time goes along, I would expect there would be a reduction in the amount of oil and gas equipment as we pass peak oil and so on. However, I expect at the same time, the amount of electrical
24 BREAKBULK EUROPE PREVIEW 2018
generation infrastructure of the renewable variety will increase and continue to increase. That implies the customer base will change, the kind of equipment we move will change and even the supply chains will evolve. For the carrier industry, reducing CO2 forces farreaching consequences. The shipping industry today relies on fossil fuel. There isn’t a viable, 100 percent alternative. There are some technologies, of course, which contribute to reducing CO2, but there is no complete alternative. It’s the challenge of our generation to find those new solutions and will in part be driven by regulatory change, but being ever the optimist, my hope is that innovation is really what is going to propel the change most of all. New solutions will be found that are both environmentally superior and result in zero emission. At the same time, they can be preferential in terms of cost to what we have today. I don’t think that those two ideas should necessarily be mutually exclusive. You can make the argument that if you understand sustainability, you have a much better chance of understanding the risks and opportunities that lie ahead for your business.

Regulation around sulphur is particularly important because compliance comes with an unprecedented level of cost. The threat of weak enforcement of sulphur regulations is escalating fast. Responsible industry is taking the initiative to mitigate this threat, serving the best interests of the environment and human health as well as creating a level playing field for business. EDUCATION DAY: AN ‘EXTRAORDINARY’ OPPORTUNITY FOR MARITIME STUDENTS Meet Professor Doctor Thomas Pawlik, Dean of Studies, Center of Maritime Studies at the Hochschule Bremen (Bremen University of Applied Sciences). Dr. Pawlik leads one of the groups who will participate in the Breakbulk Europe Education Day. Education Day brings students and faculty from around the region to spend some time in practical learning, experiences and networking. Here Dr. Pawlik shares his perspective on Breakbulk Education Day in Bremen. Our institution has two focused maritime degree programs, the one is Ship Management which is Nautical Studies and the other is Shipping and Chartering. Students have seminars related to heavy lift and project cargo so they have a basic theoretical understanding. With the presentations and case studies at Breakbulk Europe, they will benefit from this very practical approach. I also think having the chance to listen to so many experts from the industry in one place is a very exclusive opportunity for both students and faculty. Students can learn a lot from these highly experienced industry professionals and from the real case study examples. It’s also a unique chance to network at the exhibition – this is
not only true for the students but also for my colleagues. These contacts can be very helpful from the professional view of the students for their career after graduation and for us to build common approaches. We strongly recommend Breakbulk Europe Education Day for our students with a maritime logistics background. They should attend this unique event to complement their studies. This is also an opportunity for interested students with an economic background to look into the breakbulk business. So everyone who is into breakbulk should attend this really extraordinary Education Day to network with the industry and make some new contacts.

Dual Vocational Training is the backbone of the qualification system for skilled workers in Germany for hundreds of years. In Bremen with its reputation as a major player in the field of logistics, the member companies of the Bremen Chamber of Commerce - CCI for Bremen and Bremerhaven constantly provide about 1.000 vocational trainings in the field of transport and logistics, e.g. “Freight forwarding and logistics services clerk” or “Shipping and chartering manager”. These staterecognized vocational trainings usually have a duration of three years both in companies and professional schools with a final state examination at the Bremen Chamber of Commerce. With this background, it is easy to understand that education in the field of transport and logistics is a major interest of the Bremen Chamber of Commerce and its member companies. We definitely support the Breakbulk Europe 2018 Education Day! Blockchain Supersession Part II: Project Blockchain – Is It Real Yet? How will blockchain be incorporated into project transport logistics and project management, and how quickly will it happen? Is this already underway? Clearly a disruptive force, some industry players see blockchain as inevitable, while others believe it cannot truly infiltrate the idiosyncratic project cargo transport industry. Our panel of industry executives and entrepreneurs working on the cutting edge discuss ways they are incorporating blockchain and the latest thinking into their disciplines, and the changes and resistance they expect to see. Please join this discussion and share your insights, experience and differences of opinion.

Exhibitor-led Session: Importance of Total Cost of Ownership in Port Management [Sponsored Content]
13:00 – 13:45
Total cost of ownership is one of the key decision factors in modern port management and state-ofthe-art equipment also needs to prove its value in a cost efficient mode of operation and maintenance. Using the example of the Liebherr Reachstacker LRS 545, it can be demonstrated how a hydrostatic drive in combination with individual wheel drive effectively reduces fuel consumption, wear and tear of the tires and maintenance costs and by that the amount of money spent on a device during its working life.

Shippers Panel: Consolidation and Contracting Trends in the Project Supply Chain Consolidations and mergers at the top of the project supply chain, amongst project owners, EPCs, fabricators and manufacturers, will percolate down and affect every forwarder and service provider. The environment is changing, probably for good: cargo owners and controllers are operating leaner and watching costs like never before. How will these trends develop? Who will control spend and decision-making? Is this the natural evolution of an industry forced to clean house after the downturn, or a new wave? Moderator: Thomas Skellingsted, Vice President, Global Heavy Lift and Project Operations, ABB Dieter Busam, Procurement Global Forwarding Industrial Projects, BASF Cesar Martín Pereda, Global Logistics Manager, Initec Plantas Industriales

Incubating Innovation – Nurturing an Innovation Culture in a Traditional Industry
12:15 – 13:00
In the maritime and harbor industries, companies tend to have established, traditional – even old-fashioned – business models. They may resist changing business methods which have worked for them for decades. In today’s rapidly changing maritime world, this creates great risk. Companies that don’t learn to innovate and adapt will be left behind. How can we retain what works, grasp new concepts such as digitization, and learn to trust change – even in ‘old’ industries? Our experts will discuss ways to create buy-in and build innovation cultures that add true business value.
A small fishing port on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast was transformed into a heavy-lift transportation hub for the 4.8-gigawatt combined-cycle power station Burullus, one of three gas-fired plants built in Egypt simultaneously. Each required the delivery of massive heavy-lift and over-dimensional components. The Burullus turbines, generators, transformers, boilers and condensers, with weights of as much as 500 tons, reached the job site within a fast-track delivery period of only 18 months. Come hear the details of this record-breaking project.
