Speak Portuguese like a Diplomat!
What sort of people need to learn a foreign language as quickly and effectively as possible? Foreign Service personnel, that's who. Members of the United States diplomatic corps are assigned to embassies abroad, where they must be able to converse fluently in every situation. NEWS from BRAZIL - DECEMBER 1994
-Rio de Janeiro has been for ever the jewel of the Republic and the cultural center of Brazil. The city may have lost the bureaucratic buildings and institutions to Brasilia and the economic strength to Sao Paulo, but the soul of Brazil is still there, it never left. Rio is Brazil. That's why when Carlocas(Rio's residents) get a headache all of Brazil suffers.
Right now, our most famous post. card is virtually occupied by the MOW,' The armed forces' intervention came after the local and state government demonstrated their inability to deal with the increasing violence in the city. The Carioca lives so scared that he is running for cover as soon he hears any noise that remind him of a shot. A just released survey reveals that one of the biggest fears in Rio is to be killed by a stray bullet.
More than 75 years ago, Washington Luis, a Carioca politician who would become president of Brazil, turned many noses declaring that "the social problem in Rio is a police problem". The phrase seems to have gained a new urgency and nobody is disputing it nowadays. Brazilians and Brazil lovers, all Cariocas by heart, can only wish that the people from Rio can take back their streets and with it their wise sense of humor. We miss that. R.M.

Dora Vivacqua. born in the state of Espirito Santo in 1917. loved to dance since childhood. When she was 18 her parents placed her in an insane ass lum so she would "change her sinful habits." That's when she ran away to Rio and disowned her family, changed her name to Luz Div ma (Divine Light) and started a career as a ballerina, first in a circus and then in vaudeville. Lover of powerful and admired even by President Getalio Vargas. she became famous dancing naked with two boas around her body'. In 1949 she tried to start the Brazilian Naturist Party which favored nudism. She ended her life miserably in 1967 and was thrown in the sea after being assassinated by two fishermen. But Luz was able to fulfill one of her dreams before: she bought a little island close to Rio. changed its name to Ilha do Sol (Sun Island) and transfonned it into the first Brazilian nudist colony. At the anchorage there was this sign: "Take off your clothes before coming in.- In 1959, American actress Jayne Mansfield wanted to meet Luz. She w ent to the island, but since she refused to undress, Luz didn't receive her. Politics
Jungle Legend Marina Silvas' story reads like Cinderella's tale. Come February 1, she will be joining in the senate four other women. It seemed almos impossible that she was able to get 64,400 votes from the state of Acre — the biggest vote-getter ever in the state — in opposition to the interests of latifundium owners. Before arriving in Rio Branco (Acre's capital) at 16, Silva was an illiterate and very sick child, tapping rubber in the Amazon together with her nine siblings. She had survived five attacks of malaria and three of hepatitis. In ten years she went from the initial ABC to a degree in history from Universidade do Acre. Silva won in the same state that saw the murder of rubber-tapper leader and ecological heroChico Mendes. Mendes and Silva were friends. She promised to defend his cause, "They want to destroy our nature, but we are not going to allow here the same destruction that happened in Europe and the United States."
After evading police for seven months, Castor de Andrade, 67, Rio's most notorious chief of jogo do bicho (numbers' game) and patron of samba school Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel, was captured in Sao Paulo while visiting the Satan do Automov el. His old passion for imported cars ended up doing him in. A false mustache and the new black tint on his hair weren't enough to maintain him incognito. "You were arrested by a colleague," a police commissioner told him, referring to the officer who caught him: Sidney Carriolo. president of a Samba School. "A pity, because I love samba a lot," said Castor, adding. "Rio's schools arc better than the ones here." "Our police. however, is better than yours," riposted the commissioner.

While the police are sinking in a sea of 70,660 investigations waiting to be made, the criminal courts are the realm of the flies, with judges having nothing:to do. Prosecutors don't expect to get more than depositions and expert reports. They have given up asking for "more complicated- actions from the police like analyzing blood type or matching fingerprints. This is not the first time favelas have been occupied by men in uniform. In 1992 the militaty and the civilian police invaded the morros of Mneira and of Provideacia. The crime in the area _plunged immediately. But, without money to offer social services the effort had to be abandoned and the situation went back to where it was before the occupation. Although well received by the population in the beginning. the police started to be antagonized when they were not able to deliver the services the traffickers were offering. As in other favelas the drug dealer lords arc the ones who pay for the taxi when the ambulance cannot come, who throw a party when there's a special birthday or anniversary, who punish and jail thieves and molesters. Army intervention in a ‘ favela is nothing new. For one year now the armed forces have been controlling 7,000 strong favela Roquete Pinto with a 24-hour presence The action happened after a gang of drug dealers dared to shoot the compound of the Armored Infantry 24th Battalion. The traffickers were jailed. Rio has known much better times. Veil though it lus never lost its flair and fame as a cosmopolitan and culturally rich metropolis, the city has been decaying inexorably since losing to Brasilia, in 1960, the title of Capital of the Republic. Since theaRiohasbeen suffering a desindustrialization. Witle in 1950. the Rio state's industry represented 25% of the country's industrial output, 11
this number had already fallen to 12% by 1980. The contraction of the job market has aggravated the social imbalances. How to keep smiling? - In one more rude blow to Rio's image, and in a first in Brazil's history, the whole state had its October elections an-

Grega was charging almost $20,000 for a bundle of 3,000 votes. Documents found with her showed that she has been active in at least three past elections. Stravinou had connections from the drug Mafia to the president of the TRE. Grega was asood friend of Decio Itabaiana, former president of the TRE who died in 1992. According to the federal police, the man who was supposed to guarantee the integrity of the elections was making money by corrupting it. "I noticed that the fraud had reached dramatic proportions when I paid attention to the low rate of blank votes," said electoral prosecutor Alcinar Molina. The national average of blank votes was 17%. In Santo Antonio de Padua, for example, a ballot box contained more votes than the number of registered voters in that section. For the second round of votes, the armed forces have

nulled. The votes for president and senator were computed, but the TRE (Regional Electoral Tribunal) decided to throw away all the ballots for federal deputies (members of the House of Representatives) and state assemblymen and convoke a new election. The TRE concluded that it would be easier to take the 9.2 million voters again to the polls than to recount the votes after having found substantiated fraud in more than half of the 117 electoral zones. The Tribunal estimates that 1.8 million votes were altered. Among the fraud's perpetrators was a woman who repeatedly stuffed her bra with blank ballots and went to the bathroom to fill them out. Another woman, Maria Stravinou, 49, the "Grega" (Greek), has been appointed by the police as the main falsifier. She is in jail with 13 other suspects. been given the task of inspecting the voting and the vote tallying. For Cariocas, it has been hard to keep a smiling face and preserve their image as the laid-back, easy-going, happy-go-lucky symbol of Brazil. According to a poll from Databrasil, 85% of its residents consider Rio a dangerous city and 59% admit not feeling NEWS from BRAZIL - DECEMBER 1994
secure in their own neighborhood. And what's the kind of violence that people fear most? A little more than 30% cite holdups, followed by stray bullets (28%), an item that wasn't even cited two years ago when a similar survey was made. The violence has been increasing due to impunity, say 85% of the interviewees and 58% don't see any difference between police and criminal. Laura Dantas, Databrasil's director, notices that even Cariocas who weren't directly hit by violence have changed some of their habits without even noticing it, "Some of these changes are as subtle as not going out with a watch or keeping the car windows closed. This fear is so present that people don't even notice they have modified their routine." Some never give up - Not everybody is expecting to watch the circus being burned, as they say in Brazil. There are several groups trying to steal the initiative from the confrontation of weapons. One of the most active is the movement called Viva Rio. "The state and the federal government are not solely responsible for the city's fate," says anthropologist Rubem Cesar Fernandes, 52, the president of the group. "This is a task which concerns all of us, and it is something to be exercised daily, not only during the elections." Fernandes calls attention to the need of politically correct actions and the avoidance of "little crimes" like suicidal behavior in traffic and the greasing of hands to expedite public services. "We cannot criticize violence and then maintain a cynical posture in our own life," observes the anthropologist. "The Carioca has to take back his own streets and abandon this fear that makes him cloister himself at home." This is the advice of Gilberto Velho, another anthropologist from Rio, for whom the crisis of self-esteem of Rio's NEWS from BRAZIL-DECEMBER 1994

residents can only be solved by the Cariocas themselves. Some are not waiting for a sign from the government to start their good deeds. These are people like the architect Manuel Ribeiro, who, together with four friends, has been participating as a volunteer in a program called Favela-Bairro. The project sponsored by City Hall intends to offer basic services like sewage, electricity and elementary education to 15 poor areas of Rio. "This is as vital for fighting violence as the chasing of traffickers. The FavelaBairro program corrects this idea that Rio has to grow divided in two cities." •

We are willing to pay $20 for each show taped, besides all evenses. We are dying to make somebocy in Brazil independently wealthy. Robert McKay Oakland, California YUCCA IS YUCKY Every time I go to a Brazilian restaurant in California, I always see the same mistake on their menus. They translate mandioca as yucca. This is absolutely wrong. Mandioca is indeed called yuca (one "c") in Spanish, but in English it translates as manioc or cassava. Meanwhile, yucca is a spiny-leaved plant of the agave family that looks like a cactus and grows all over Southern California. Believe me, you don't want to order farofa made from yucca. Power fever Brasilia is in its maniac phase these days while Fernando Hen rique Cardoso and his royal entourage prepare to take over the throne. Everybody has been adjusting their seats to be closer to the new rainmakers in town. EMERSON LUIS
Traditionally Brasilia gets emptied of its more illustrious residents at the end of the year, as ministers, legislators and high level bureaucrats go back to their native states to be ith their families for the year-end celebrations. This time, however. Brazil's capital seems to be preparing the most spirited rt:weillon (New Year's party) in its 34 years of existence, despite the discretion and Spartan habits of President-Elect Fernando Henrique Cardoso. whose inauguration will take place on January I. 1995. Since the event is planned for the morning, those stretching their New Year's eve parties will have to go directly from their celebrations to the Palacio da Alvorada e ceremonies. Argentinean president Carlos Menem and Cuban leader Fidel Castro head r the list of foreign dignitaries being expected. Since the end of October. all five-star hotels in the capital have been completely booked, with discounts and trading suspended and special packages canceled between December 28 and January 3. Most of the reservations have been made by Itamaraty, the Brazilian foreign ministry. With an expected 0% rate of vacancy, the hotels have been gearing up for ;1/4specialnWillonparties. The Kubitschek Plaza. for example. has been decorated in silver and f"16 04 white and is asking its guests to wear the same A colors for the ball with the theme Brasilia, r land al. magic. Cardoso comes to Brasilia on the crest of a popularity unsurpassed by any oilier president in the past. The new president won with 54% of the valid votes. enough to avoid a run-off election, and 36% of the electoral college. Eurico Gaspar Dutra receivet143% of the votes in 1945. but then Brazil's population was three times smaller and only 16% of Brazilians voted (against 60% in the latest election). While Dutra defeated three other postulants to the post. Cardoso was running against seven other candidates. FHC (as he is frequently called in headlines) won in all states, losing to Luiz lnacio Lula da Silva only in Rio Grande do Sul and the Federal District. In a post-election visit to Prague, the president elect was asked by his host Czech President Vaclav Klaus if he intended to be more Domingos Cavallo or more Carlos Menem during his presidency. Cardoso answered with a sly smile and no words. Cavallo is in charge of the economy in Argentina while president Menem takes care of politics. Had Klaus read Fernando Henrique's thoughts he would have known Cardoso wants to be more Cavallo and more Menem. He wants to be all. He doesn't talk about himself as the president. but somebody occupying the presidency and he prefers to be seen more as an agglutinator. an administrator, a negotiator than a leader. The same philosophy is being used for the selection of his cabinet members and closer aides. Much more organized than his predecessor hamar Franco. who doesn't have daily meetings with his aides and ministers, and a man who likes to be in charge. Cardoso is reestablishing the socalled 9 AM meeting, a practice created in 1964, by President Castello Branco. a Marshall, who led the first administration after the military coup of March 31, 1964. Cardoso's aides have met with former aides of president Ernesto Geisel (another military, who governed from 1974 to 1979) to learn more about his model of administration. Despite having been forced into exile by the military regime. Fernando Henrique is a fan of Geiser s efficiency. Earlier this year, he praised the general. saying. -The Palacio do Planalto is an inflated and ineffective structure in which the president is neither informed properly nor is able to follow what's happening in the government. NEWS from BRAZIL - DECEMBER 1994
The last time a president was capable of acting with consequence was during Geisel's administration." Cardoso. in what he calls the -functionalization of the Planalto", wants the presidency to plan and control the execution in the three areas he considers a priority: social welfare, health and education. Four names are essential in this scheme: the cabinet chief (responsible for organizing his agenda). the chief of staff (not involved with politics), the juridical adviser (in charge of the wording of presidential provisional measures and decrees), and the Planning Secretary (responsible for the economic policy without clashing with the Finance Ministry). There are names chosen, like former president of Unicamp (Universidade de Campinas), Paulo Renato Souza as Planning Secretary. but they haven't been announced officially at the closing of this issue. To recruit good aides, the president will face the problem of low salaries. The biggest monthly salary for a highlevel aide today is $1460. FHC has also promised to cut roughly in half the 27 ministries now in existence. The first five ministries were created in 1822. the year Brazil proclaimed its independence from Portugal and started to be governed by Emperor Pedro I. In 1930. the number of ministerial cabinets had risen to 12. Since independence, the cabinet has suffered 35 overhauls, 13 of them in the last 15 years. Close to 80 different ministries and secretaries were created during this period. Among the most infamous and of shortest duration was the Debureaucratization Ministry (1985-1986) created during Jose Sarney 's administration (19851989) to decrease the number of ministries and bureaucratic offices and requirements. Some. like the Public Instruction Ministry (1889) and the Post Office and Telegraph Ministry (1892), didn't survive even one year. Impeached president Fernando Collor de Mello tried the biggest reform of all, creating super-ministries as the Economy and Planning Ministry and the Infrastructure Ministry by joining together four different cabinets. But the news that thousands of public servants would lose thcir jobs provoked a wave of legal actions that forced the firings to be converted into paid leaves of absence. There are today 126,000 public servants at the service of the executive, of which at least 21.000 are considered positions of trust that can be filled without any test or competition. -First you choose the ministers and then the ministries." says Luis Alberto Santos, the man who helped runner up Lula create a project of administrative reform. For one month after his inauguration. president Fernando Henrique Cardoso will be dealing with the old congress. The new one, elected with him on October 3. will not start its work before February 1. Not that this will make any difference. The new legislators from both houses, even though 56% were not incumbents. arc very similar to the old ones. Picked up as a political appointee to replace Rubens Ricupero, who left the ministry in disgrace after an indiscreet satellite broadcast some of his private thoughts, the new finance minister has gained the rept* tation of having a big mouth and little diplomacy or tact. He has called consumersotOrios(suckers) for paying more than the list price for cars, insulted businessmen by calling them canalhas (crooks) for increasing prices, classified as (imbeciles) irnbeas those constantly remarking price tags, and describes the PT (Workers' Party) politicians as mijoes nas calcas (pants wetters. cowards). One of the biggest foes of the Real Plan is a mentality that has gained root due to years of living withuncontroltable inflation. It's the reasoning that makes the corner restaurant owner increase its coffee price because the newspaper is costing more. Presi-

Weighing the factors There arc three main indexes used to compute inflation in Brazil. the IPC-r. the IPC-IGPM and the IPC-FIPE. They all use the same items - clothing, rent. meat, milk and beans - but they give them different weights. They are calculated at different times and by different organizations. The official index. the IPC-r (Consumer Price Index) is collected by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics) and measures the Variation on the budgets of those people earning up to eight minimum wages. The IPCA-E (E stands for special) measures inflation of families with salaries from one minimum wage ($60) to 20 minimum wages. The IPC-IGPM (General Index of Average Prices) is gathered by the Getnlio Vargas Foundation and the IPCFIPE (Foundation Institute of Economic Research) is computed by USP (Universidade de Siio Paulo). For some economists, however, the most urgent measure to make the Real Plan work is to guarantee that the income tax is paid by the richest people, who have been cheating or finding all kinds of loopholes in the tax laws
to pay nothing or very little to the income tax lion. Paulo Nogueira Batista Junior, from Fundacan Getillio Vargas (an economic think tank from So Paulo) calls "innocuous and shameful" the tax collecting system in force in the country. According to Batista Junior, for every dollar collected, one dollar is embezzled. The government estimates that there was a loss of $83 billion in taxes in 1993, the equivalent to twice the nation's federal reserves. Around 4,000 wealthy Brazilians who seem to be cheating Brazil's IRS have been sent a letter in November from the income tax office. It's a first step to try to collect the billions owed the government.

Who arc these kids walking the streets of Brazil's cities with Bibles in their backpacks? They: aren't the stereotypical creates caretas(rcligious nerds) who wear long skirts or suit and tic. These young people NA car T-shirts. shorts. miniskirts, or jeans. like many other teenagers throughout the world. But look a bit closer at the showy logos on the stickers attached to their notebooks and bikes. At first glance. they seem to be advertisements for Pepsi-Cola. Brahma beer. Halls cough drops. or Adams chewing gum. Actually. the stickers promote an even better-known household name -Jesus Christ. The music that these young people listen to is also in the secular style: rock. rap. funk, samba-reggae, pagode. rhythm and blues. "The Bible talks about praising the Lord with stringed instruments and clashing cymbals.- says
Paulo Roberto de Souza Muniz. a member of the evangclicalpagodeband. Raga Elcita (Chosen Race), based in Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro state. "Those were the instruments of the time. Why can't we use those of today'?" There is even a Christian music video show. Vinde Music, airing on Tuesday mornings on CNT. which attracts viewers from both within and without the evangelical milieu. Brazil has adhered to the Roman Catholic faith since its colonization by the Portuguese. and it has the largest nominally Catholic population in the world. However, there are now 35 million evangelical Protestants in Brazil. Unlike the Catholics, the evangelicals are growing rapidly and seem to have a knack for attracting youth. In Rio de Janeiro state from 1990 to 1992. an average of five evangelical churches were opened each week. During the same period, only one new Catholic parish opened in Rio. Its known that drug traffickers in Rio like to have an Assembly of God parish in each favela they control. According to the calculations of the Brazilian Evangelical Association (AEB). over 20 million people under age 25 -- nearly 15% of
the total population of Brazil -profess evangelical Protestantism. At the current growth rate. it is predicted that by the year 2014. 50% of all Brazilians will be evangelicals. Says Pastor Caio Fabio d Aranjo Filho. president of the AEB. "The evangelical faith dares young people to believe in a God Who is present and active. The services are cheerful and animated with rhythm and up-to-date lyrics. Besides, for evangelicals. every thing that is sacred can be updated by modern means such as music. computers. video games, all sorts of multimedia resources" Stores that cater to the evangelical market arc flourishing. They have everything from watches to domestic utensils. from clothes to school supplies, all w ith Christian messages. The largest store of this type. Jerusalem Casa da Paz in Sao Paulo. sells about

250,000 items of 300 different products a month. The Shopping Evangelic° in Belo Horizonte, Apocalipse in Rio de Janeiro, and the God Shop in Niteroi are also making a splash. At these stores, one can buy videogames with Biblical themes. Imagine yourself a David of the video screen and try to kill Goliath with a stone from your slingshot before he does you in. Or would you rather be Joshua at the battle of Jericho? Not everybody is impressed by the young evangelicals. "When I told my mom that I was going to an evangelical church, she asked me if I was going to become a religious fanatic," remembers Vivian D' Amato Dias, 18, who attends the Igreja Presbiteriana BethaMa in Niteroi. "But she came here and ended up converting." Another story didn't have as happy an ending. "I was going out with a girl who wasn't an evangelical, and she got jealous of Jesus," says Daniel Contreras Guitierrez, 16, also of the Igreja Presbiteriana Bethania. "Obviously, it didn't work out, and we broke up really hard." Others doubt the extent of the evangelical phenomenon. Says Dom Eduardo Bittencourt, a theologian at the Sao Bento Monastery in Rio, "First, you need to prove that young people are joining evangelical churches en masse. But I don't believe it, because I know their statistics. I think the number of young people who attend Catholic churches isn't much different than those who go to evangelical ones." Adds Jesus Hortal, a Jesuit priest and vice-rector of academic affairs at the Pontificia Universidade Catolica in Rio, "These churches offer a cheerful atmosphere, but are totally uncommitted about the major problems facing the country. Consequently, they lead young people to alienation." "Believers don't see, nor hear, nor speak," says Senator 26
elect Benedita da Silva (PT --Rio de Janeiro), who lives in a favela and is a member of the Assembly of God parish in Rio's Leblon district. "They don't involve themselves with the day-to-day life of the community." Comments Pastor d'Araiijo Filho, "When the Catholic Church changed [after the Second Vatican Council of 1962-65], it came to think that man was a big stomach without a soul. But it's not just that. In Brazilian culture, Catholic rituals continue to be associated with the most tedious, boring, and disagreeable things anybody can do." In their attempts to make boredom a thing of the past for saving souls, evangelicals believe that not quite anything goes: they reject syncretism with Afro-Brazilian religions. It won't do any good to ex• pect a timbalada from Christ.

meetings and going with him on these peace missions. Curiously, Brad was born on March 26, 1979, the same day the newspapers' headlines were talking about the signing of a Peace Treaty between Egypt and Israel, which ended 30 years of war and reestablished commercial and diplomatic relations between both countries. For his parents, the nurse's announcement, "It's a boy," was a big surprise. After an inconclusive ultrasound and judging by the heartbeat of the child, the doctor had predicted a girl. One month later, Brad would get his own Brazilian passport and would start a loving courtship with his father's country. Brad grew up inEl Segundo, California, and attended kindergarten, and elementary and middle schools there. Early on, he showed his love for soccer. He used to play it with his father in their backyard and later at the El Segundo Youth Soccer team. Until today, Pelle is his hero in and out of the field. He has exchanged letters with the soccer legend and one of his dreams is to meet him face to face. Correa has also followed the careers of Brazilian Formula One racers and joined Brazil in crying the loss of Ayrton Senna, earlier this year. Since his first trip to Russia and the ensuing celebrity status he attained, Brad has received invitations from several countries to visit their children. He has been to Mexico, Singapore, Poland, Turkey, Kuwait, Egypt, Syria, Jordan, and, naturally, Brazil. In Cairo, the young ambassador was asked by the Egyptian Speaker of the Parliament to visit all the countries involved in the Israeli-Arab conflict. To promote relations, Brad has been taking thousands of letters of American school children to the countries he visits, starting in the process a vast pen-pal program. While Poland was still under communist control, Brad was invited to participate in a 36

late afternoon and Christiane Callil sits herself down in a big cushion booth in the now empty- Beverly Hills club, Talon, where she performs her Brazilian Carnaval Show. She is extremely eager, almost fidgety, to tell me everything about her show. When 1 tell her I need to ask something about her life she first sighs then smiles and patiently says "go ahead." You see, she could have been running a linen shop. Life could have been set out neatly -. hmuch less risk and possiwit bly lots of profit "This year I was going to open my business believe it or not," she said. When I came back from doing an acting job in Brazil I thought, 'I want to stay with performing because 1 love it, but I want to have my own business in case I can't do this anymore,'" Which would have been very strange for her indeed, since dancing and acting is all she's really done most of her life. Callil grew up in Sao Paulo rn a conservative but well-to do Lebanese family. She went to an all-girls Catholic school tun by ntitis, and her mom sent - her to ballet lessons at an early age 'So that L would be very graceful and that when I got married 1 would know how to walkr the right way." By age 13, She was doing commercials:for Brazilian television, and by 16, she was running her own dance studio. Her urge to learn as much as she could - about contemporary dancing took her to New York where „she soon got her first taste of just how far she could go. "When I was 181 wanted to , go there and experience something new and then take those things back to Brazil." said Callil. "So 1 went and it was NEWS from BRAZIL - DECEMBER 1994

"I've • been here ever since," It's now nine years later and Call it is.going stronger than ever. Although she has appeared ...in several movies including the Mambo Kings and Saixo as well as the Oscar ceremonies of 1989, among many other projects like commercials, music videos and small roles in television series, Callil felt a bit reluctant to continue on with the insecurities of the L.A. showbiz scene. That's where opening the linen business:fi.ts in, After making contacts and fabric orders something very necessary happened to her. She re-discovered her Brazilian roots. "The World Cup comes and I kept running into Brazilians 37
and it was party here and party there," she adds. "Since I've been here I didn't want anything to do with Brazilians, I just wanted to be with Americans. I didn't even want to speak Portuguese, but then all of a sudden everything I didn't want for so long I wanted so strongly.. .1 think I was fighting because being an actress I wanted to lose my accent, play all the roles. It was kind of a frustration. But this is what I am and I DO love it and it's silly to hide what you are." What she is now is creator, producer, director and dancer for her show "The Girls from Ipanema" at the Tatou Club in Beverly Hills every Wednesday and Friday night. The show features beautiful dancers, exotic costumes, fantastic samba music and everything an American would come to expect from a Brazilian Carnaval show. But the show also appeals to the Brazilian crowd who want to experience a legitimate piece of their culture. "What happened was that after we agreed to do the show here the owners said the show has to appeal to an American audience," she said. "That was my intention and that's why there's no capoeira, berimbau or Baianas because I knew it wouldn't work. But the culture of Brazil is here and Brazilians love it. The Consul of Brazil has been here twice and told me he's never seen a show that good." Word of mouth reviews have been so positive that every 38

night she and her colleagues play to a packed house. Dionne Warwick, who has just put out an album of Brazilian music herself, went to see the spectacle four times. Although Callil and her dancers have their share of fun on stage, the finished product is the result of a lot of long rehearsals and grueling practice. Some of the original dancers dropped out because they couldn't dedicate themselves to the schedule that Callil sets. A self acknowledged perfectionist, she realized early on that a certain standard had to be set to maintain the integrity of the show. The end result is a set of performers that not only are willing to dedicate themselves to the show but also have a good time doing it. And now, even though Callil still has to deal with some of the same old insecurities as before, she feels confident that she's in a groove that can carry her for a long time. "Every day I have something new come in my mind," she adds. "I want to invest in creating shows, Brazilian shows, Latin shows, American shows, whatever, and I want to make it bigger. Brazil is me so it's defiantly the way I can open doors. We can go to Las Vegas, expand to 20 dancers and a live band playing original songs." For Christiane Callil the sky's the limit and some linen tailor somewhere is going to have some job supplying all those costumes! NEWS from BRAZIL - DECEMBER 1994

Sony Records, smelling' money from afar, offered him a contract and ended up releasing in September 1993 two of the biggest hits of the year: "Loraburra" ("Stupidblond") and "Retrato de urn Playboy" ("Portrait of a Playboy"). Both songs were an attack on juvenile alienation and the record containing them sold more than 250,000 copies. "I can Thaide identify with him," says Lobao condescendingly. "I made the same mistake when I was younger. To make the same grimaces as a Chicago or New York rapper and act as if you were one of them doesn't work. His discourse is very anti-American. Now it's time for him to de-Americanize himself." Gabriel's answer to that: "I don't imitate anything. Music is a world language and hip hop is an AfroAmerican culture against the American culture. We have assimilated this and many other things. Whoever is worried with that, he can listen to whatever he likes: samba, pagode, there are all sorts of options." And he has a word of reproach to American rappers, "They talk too much about eroticism and pornography. I don't like that. Brazil has more serious questions than sex to deal with." Drown this bitch in the swimming pool." When they are not attacking their public, the racionais Edy Rock, Mano Brown, la Jay and Ice Blue are talking how hard life is in the suburbs, how violent the police are, and how the most miserable people try to survive. Through independent Zimbabwe Records, the Paulista (from Sao Paulo) band has already released three albums. Their latest record (Raio-X Brasil: Liberdade de Express& — XRay Brazil: Freedom of Expression) went gold (100,000 copies) in two weeks. They started playing in suburbia — the group is from Capao Redondo, a poor suburban neighborhood and have built up there a vast following, leading them to a hectic schedule of up to three gigs a night. As Mano Brown admits, they don't like white and rich kids. "We are here for the money, to take back what they have stolen from us. Conversing in a foreign language is a major social and business asset which brings new life to travel, entertainment, and relationships. The technique of accelerated learning, as used by these foreign language courses, allows anyone to comfortably converse in a new language within 30 days. Accelerated learning, developed by famed learning expert Dr. Georgi Lozanov, is based on involving both hemispheres of the brain in the education process. The analytical (or logical) left side of the brain, when properly activated with the musical (or artistic) right side, both increases the speed and heightens the retention of learning. Using these untapped mental capacities of your learning ability is the basis of these unique, highly effective courses. "American Managers with Language Skills Open More Doors"
in modern scientific language instruction. Best Value! With a total of 30 cassettes plus study materials -and triple bonus!*-. this program represents the best value available today in language instruction. Compared to other programs, the Accelerated Learning Series outperforms them all with twice the audio and 20 times the study material. To correctly converse in a foreign language, you must understand the meanings and intent of the native speaker. If, after 30 days of listening to these study and memory tapes, you are not comfortably understanding and conversing in your new language, return them for a full refund. *Triple Bonus!! ...Order your beginning course now and you'll also receive each of the following in the language you choose: • Two 90-minute Vocabulary Tapes • The Random House Foreign
Language Dictionary • AT&T's unique "Point-Talk Translator"-allows you
to communicate in that language by simply pointing at the word in English.
Toll-Free, 24-hours: VISA • M/C • AMEX:
—Wall Street Journal Editorial
You will team your new language as stresslessly as a child does, by hearing new vocabulary and phrases in alternately loud, whispered, and emphatic intonations, all accompanied by slow rhythmic music in digital stereo. This perfect combination of music and words allow the two halves of the brain to work together to dramatically facilitate your assimilation of the new language. The memory tapes of this 30-tape package help activate the learning capacities of the brain. The study tapes are the same proven tapes used by the Foreign Service Institute to train its career diplomats. This merging of two concepts gives you two courses in one, and provides the hest ol both worlds
