Speak Portuguese like a Diplomat!

What sort of people need to learn a foreign language as quickly and effectively as possible? Foreign Service personnel, that's who. Members of the United States diplomatic corps are assigned to embassies abroad, where they must be able to converse fluently in every situation. Now you can learn to speak Brazilian Portuguese just as these diplomatic personnel do — with the Foreign Service Institute's Programmatic Portuguese Course. Tens of thousands of dollars were spent by the United States government in developing this course. It's by far the most effective way to learn Portuguese at your own convenience and at your own pace. The Programmatic Portuguese Course consists of a series of tape cassettes and an accompanying textbook. You simply follow the spoken and written instructions, listening and repeating. By the end of the course, you'll find yourself learning and speaking entirely in Portuguese! This course turns your cassette player into a "teaching machine." With its unique "programmatic" learning method, you set your own pace — testing yourself, correcting errors, reinforcing accurate responses.

, . ------By the time sonid'of yiaGi-:e elvt this issue we will already know what's our new president's name. Or may be not. In such case, we would then have the field of contestants reduced to two and another chance to make our decision on November 15. Not being a breaking-news yehide, but a monthly observer, we continue to bring the Brazil that the new leader will inherit, full-of promises and, most of all, full of problems waiting to be urgently dealt with. Apart from the social misery and

injustice that permeate its daily life, Brazil is still in search of character. Once again, our higher authorities —being a mirror of the whole society — have shown how the country is lacking in integrity. While the law makes clear that Members of Congress are not allowed to use Congress's printing facilities to prepare their own electoral literature, it seems that almost every one of them has done just that. The president of Congress, senator Humberto Luce na (Paraiba' s PMDB) has been punished for that by the Superior Electoral Tribunal. The TSE has prohibited Lucena from runfling for any elective post in the next three years. He is appealing, however,

This comes at the same time that satellite dishes captured a very revealing conversation of our now exFinance Minister. Rubens Ricupero, who, among other disclosures, admitted that he was hiding from the public some compromising governmerit numbers, with the cynic confession: bad news we hide, the good ones we promote. We are publishing most of his candid talk. Ricupero had all the physical and mental trappings of an ascetic and saint. And he was humble and apologetic in his fall. Who said Brazil has no repair? Shakespeare's Ilanilet had never been so exposed. In the latest interpretation of the play by Brazilian director Ze Celso Martinez Correa the mise-en-scene required that the actors not only bare their souls, but also their bodies. Contemplating Hamlet's queen mother Gertrudes' anatomy played by Christiane Tortoni (photo) sonic critics raved, "She is delicious, voluptuous, moving". Most of them, however, seemed turned off by what they considered a crass and cheap vulgarization of the Bard's work, that included embarrassing forced participation by the public. The naked queen herself took it all in stride. "The criticism shows that people are living in a very uncool manner," said La Torloni. -That' s In every one has a muzzle over their mouth."

Hunting season For Corina Brasil, 28, an executive secretary from Minas Gerais state, it didn't help that she had $3,000 in cash and an American fouryear visa stamped in her Brazilian passport. The customs agent at the JFK international airport in New York decided that hers was a fake document. After being handcuffed for 12 hours and forced to sign a confession that she had falsified papers, Brasil was kicked out of

the country. The episode infuriated many a Brazilian. Brazil's Federal Police, the issuer of the passport, swears to the authenticity of the document. When Brasil tried to complain at the American Consulate in Sdo Paulo, she had the door slammed at her face. "Sorry, we can't do a thing," they said, washing their hands.

ftMIRIIN1Ift? Herbert de Souza, the Brazilian sociologist who leads the movement called Citizenry Action Against Misery and Pro Life and who's better known as Betinho, didn't hide his frustration during his short stay in New York. He came here to the US to talk to representatives of NGOs (Non Governmental Organizations) from all over the world. But he first wanted to vent his anger: "I'm HIV positive. I only was able to enter this country after getting a special authorization. What a stupid policy. The individual who knows he is infected offers no risk. The person who doesn't know is the one who spreads the disease." November 3, Brazilians in the South will have a special four-minute preview of the night during the day. The total solar eclipse show will be visible from Parana, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. For Paulistas (from So Paulo) and Cariocas (those from Rio) the spectacle will be less dramatic with only 80% of the sun disappearing. It's only natural that astronomy amateurs and professionals, the curious and the romantic from all over the world are planning to flock to, among other places, Foz do Iguacu. Japanese, European and American travel agencies are organizing packages to take tourists there. They promise an at least unforgettable performance in the skies. There's a T-shirt that has become a best-seller among Paulista street vendors. The eternal rivalry between Rio and Sao Paulo helps to explain the success. The shirt has the inscription, "I left my heart in Rio..." followed by "and also my wallet, my watch..."

hunger that we have been through is appearing again, our siblings died of it." Looking at it from this perspective, demographics in Brazil are more level among the various regions, and class difference is becoming less noticeable because of a drop in the number of children per household. Low birth rates, an accepted practice w ithin the middle class since the 60's, are now the accepted pattern amongst the poorer classes as well. Statistics from the latest census prove that the average birth rate for Brazilian women dropped from 5.7 children in 1970, to 2.5 children in 1991, and is still dropping. Demographic implosion - After decades of unchecked demographic growth, Brazil had steadily slowed its per capita birth rate to a mere 1.9% a year. This rate has apparently stabilized and by the first half of the coming century. ZPG or zero population growth will probably be achieved, thereby confirming the prophecy of a populatiori -implosion" that is now be-

Brazil is a world leader in cesarean births. One in three child births in Brazil involves Csection, a procedure that increases the risks to the mother as well as the newborn. Once sterilization becomes legally feasible, then they could be carried out without surgery. NEWS from BRAZIL - OCTOBER 1994

ing predicted. But the most surprising of all is not the successful reduction of new births through family p.lanning, which affects 70')/ of fertile women m Brazil, but rah -el that it :as not due tont any sort Of systematic government planning hecontrary, precisely due to the government s poor planning strategy and the Catholic church's zealous opposition to virtually any kind of birth control, many women in reproductive age were driven by sheer desperation resort to more radical methods of family planning, first and foremost. sterilization. Why? It is relatively inexpensive (consider that a month worth of pills costs around $6 and of condoms $30 in a country where half the workers make less than $120 a month), quick, and has no side effects. However, it is also radical, with very little chance of turning back. Over 44% of all Brazilian women between the ages of 15 and 54 who opted for some kind of birth control took that route. It means about 9 million women who gave up entirely the idea of having children. And although that procedure is considered a crime according to Brazil's penal code it's common for state hospitals to do the surgery disguised as a cesarean or another unnecessary procedure Vote-hungry politicians in cahoots with certain physicians, virtually quasi-legalized the procedure through the sheer force of numbers. Surreal as it can seem, sterilization has been a way for politicians to buy votes. The rate is so high in therVordeste, for example, that the number Of sterilized women has reached 59.5% in Pernambuco and 75.9% in Maranhao. In Goias, state where Brazil's capital. Brasilia, is located, this number reaches 71.9%. These dramatic and appalling numbers explain how Brazil has achieved a first-world birth rate in less than two generations Radical solutions - In a country rocked by continuous economic and inflationary problems during the past 30 years, more than 30 million people at or below the poverty line, millions more barely above it, and more than three million unemployed or underemployed adults, many learned the hard way that having numerous children was only compounding the problem, individually as well as collectively. One of the agencies that helped early on to start turning the tide was a non-governmental agency called Benfam (Civil Society of Family Welfare). Founded in 1965 by 177 health professionals, the entity received 50% of its budgetary expenses from the World Bank and other foreign institutions and the remainder through contracts with municipalities, local governments and private enterprises. During the early 70's the Catholic and Protestant churches as well as the political left attacked the generous distribution of pills among poor women promoted by Benfam. In spite of that, Benfam was able to spread out into 14 states, and in 18 years provided

Although abortions are not one of the foremost methods of birth control in Brazil, more than half of abortions are not performed in clandestine semi-primitive facilities, but rather in the homes of young girls and women who are going through an undesired pregnancy. over ten thousand IUD's, 3 million monthly doses of contraceptive pills and 15 million condoms. Benfam's reasoning is that poverty can only be reduced by reducing the number of births. Reality has worked differently, however. Although births have gone down. there are more poor people in Brazil today than 30 years ago, and they arc poorer than ever before. The corollary is, however, than if the birth rate had continued on the same level, Brazil would by now be on the verge of major social upheavals like some countries in Africa. Although the Catholic church opposes non-natural methods such as tubal ligation, the truth is that even practicing Catholics have chosen to oppose dogma. Says Luzia Batista, a Nordestino who moved to Sao Paulo 20 years ago, -The Church says that (tubal) ligation is a crime. I am a catholic, however, I think otherwise. A crime is to be unable to feed, clothe or educate your children." Just last June the Catholic 9

Letters REDISCOVERING BRAZIL I recently picked up a copy of News from Brazil as we were dining at Café do Brasil in San Francisco. From your magazine we found out about the Brazilian Independence Day which we attended. I was in Brazil in 76-77 with the Peace Corps and have many fond memories of my times there. Your magazine helps me reunite with those memories of my life in Mato Grosso. Find enclosed $9 for a three-year subscription. Michael Zimmerman Modesto, California

KEEP THE CLOTHES ON I saw this via eo on t e International Channel with a naked girl in it (Barc7o Verntelho- 8/20/94) and I thought it was in really bad taste. NEWS from BRAZIL - OCTOBER 1994

the PSDB' s (Party of the Brazilian Social Democracy) candidate. Lula didn't get even a consolation point for being the very real victim of an official conspiracy. Here are most of Ricupero's anthological statements with no retouches. He would probably erase this conversation from humankind's master videotape, if he could, make a pact with the devil for that. Monforte — The interest rates went up again. Ricupero — There was that suspicion. You know it is something preventive. It's a little what I said. It's like putting the brakes on the bus to rearrange a little.. .With this story of the IPC-r (Consumer Price Index), readjustment, people willing to go on strike. Then you have to give a jolt, don't you? And I am going to give another one. With the import stuff. This is no joke. I am going to be adamant. Monforte — It's not car import, is it import of everything? Ricupero — Everything. I'm fed up with the reserve. For me this is excellent. Monforte — Import mainly of what? Ricupero — Everything. Monforte — Are you going to lower everything, liberate everything? Ricupero — No, I wouldn't say everything. Everything that's a consumer good. To do something big. Monforte — Consumer good, what is this? Television, refrigerator, all of this? Ricupero — What you mention. Everything. Durable consumer goods. Because this is the only way that you can guarantee there will be no lack of products, because these guys.. .You are playing there with bandits, you understand. They are all bandits. Monforte — The Brazilian businessman is hard to deal with. Ricupero — lam not going to say but you know. I always tell that story: we don't threaten, but...Have you heard that story of the Mafia? We don't threaten...We don't threaten...That's what's good. A good story that I have told is the one about the Mexican driver. Do you know it? Monforte — No. Ricupero — The guy gets into this circle at rush hour the wrong way. The guy directing a radio pro-

. kiel

gram from a helicopter, says, "Cuidado! Hay un loco circulando en direccien contraria" ("Attention! There is a crazy person circulating the wrong way."). Then the guy hears that and he says, "No hay solo un loco. Hay miles de locos." ("There is not only one crazy person, but thousands of them.") (Laughter). Monforte — Well, but this stuff of the IPC-r going down, I think this is important to talk about. Ricupero —But I have nothing yet. I still can't do it. People will kill me. Jam going to promise you that: if I'm able to convince the people, then on Monday I'll give you the preference. I need,to talk to them, if not they will kill me. These people have the attitude of an economist. It's complicated stuff. They are going to say, "Hell, what you forbade the last time was bad, and now it is good..." In essence that's what it is. I have no scruples. What is good, we take advantage of it, what's bad we hide. A curiosity of mine: have you Monforte been bashing the PSDB, giving them little blows? Ricupero — I have stopped, haven't I? It was due to Franco [Gustavo Franco, the Central Bank director for Foreign A ffairs]. If I hadn't done that he would have been fired... Every time there is something like that, to keep the balance, to avoid ques7 tioning by the Electoral Tribunal... I don't know what... In order to show complete impartiality, I kick his ass. That's what I've told/sto E: Every time there's stuff like that I kick some ass., If there's a PMDB (Party of the Brazilian Democratic Movement) statement, I kick PMDB's ass. If it's the PT (Workers' Party)... The problem is that all my aides are from the PSDB. I had to do this, you see, Carlos. Because, if I don't they will be questioning my impartiality. I couldn't... Now things have calmed down, isn't it? You saw, it calmed down and so forth. Nobody mentioned the matter. These things you have to kill right there. The only way I can Prove my distance from the PSDB is by ciitieiling the PSDB. (A minister aide interrupts the conversation to ask a question about the technical problem that's happening.) Monforte — This is going to be taped in Sao Paulo... We have an open link. Because we went live. We have the open link.- We can just tape directly. The problem is this (he points out with the right hand to the earphone). This stuff about gas, isn't it a little hasty? To say that the prices can go down and so on? Ricupero — That, I said to diverr,nitention... You know, everybody is talking about the IPC-r [the index was higher than anticipated by the government]. Monforte — (He interrupts Ricupero to talk with the technicians about the sound quality.) Ricupero—As I was telling you, with this stuff I change the climate, diversion. I do these things a little by instinct, you know? Sometimes I create a mess. Don't you have any doubt: this is not a rational country. Monforte — Not at all, Ricupero — (...) lam available. I am going to

stay here the whole weekend. Because I think this is good. Because in this phase, my dear, because of the IPC-r, I am willing to stay in the air the whole time. Then, the maximum I can talk, I will talk. (Interruption in the audio for 12 seconds. TV Globo logo shows up in the screen with the disclaimer TV Globo Brasilia Origination) Ricupero — He [Cardoso] called me the other day. He wanted to congratulate me for the speech. I am not worried about that [what I am going to do when the Itamar administration ends]. Monforte — Is it really Rome [the Embassy you want to go to]? Ricupero — For me it would be better, because then I could rest and so on. Look, just between us, it's going to seem presumptuous, the government needs me much more than I need it. Monforte — Today I have no doubt. Ricupero — I wouldn't say that to another person... When all ends up, if everything goes right, the problem is going to be for him [Cardoso] to explain why he doesn't invite me [to stay in the government]. Monforte — What? Ricupero — To explain why he doesn't invite me. (laughs) You know, I don't say that, but there are lots of people who write to me and who look for me to tell me they are going to vote for him because of me. By the way, he knows that, doesn't he? That today I am his biggest vote-getter. For example, for the Globo network has been a golden mine. Because the network, instead of giving him [Cardoso] a conspicuous backing, can show me on the air and nobody can say anything. Now the PT (Workers' Party) is starting [to complain] but it can't. I'm the whole time on the air and nobody can say a thing. Isn't true? This didn't happen last time [during the prior presidential campaign, when Globe was having a harder time featuring its favorite, Fernando Collor de Mello, without infuriating the other candidates or - breaking the law]. This is a solution, we could call indirect, isn't it? Monforte — I have no doubt that many people are going to vote for him only... (inaudible). Ricupero — I hear that many people who wouldn't vote for him because of the PFL (Party of the Liberal Front, which has entered into an

ERR* 15

MfP

alliance with PSDB) and that they are going to vote because of me. Monforte — (interrupts to discuss technical problems). Technician — It's going via satellite, OK? Anything you are saaying there, the satellite dish can receive. Monforte —It's OK. It's very noisy. Can you hear that? Technician — Yes. Everybody can hear. Ricupero — Then, they've already caught it. (Monforte and Ricupero look at each other and laugh. Monforte receives a call on his cellular phone.) Monforte — Hi. Say. Tell me. Everything is OK. We already know here. That's OK then, ciao. (He then talks to Ricupero:) Look, we shouldn't talk anymore because everything is being caught by the satellite dishes. Ricupero — They should have told us before, because we are talking for half an hour. The cellular phone call, it was known later, came from Alexandre Garcia, director of Globo Network in Brasilia. He was told at home that several people were calling the station to complain about what they were watching on their TV sets. Globo, which is a master at wasting a compromising scoop, had even the audacity to claim that it had never taped its own generated images. It seems that almost everybody else did The weekly news magazine Veja, for example had access to six of them, all from different people. SBT Network, also known as Brazilian Television System, rebroadcasted the conversation, on Friday. All while Globo was making believe the scandal

never happened. Brazilian's number 1 network tried to distance itself from the episode and released a statement that made sense only to those who had seen Ricupero's candor attack. In the note, the powerful TV corporation said that Ricupero had uttered many personal opinions and commented about a possible indirect contribution that Globo Network would be giving to the candidacy of Fernando Henrique Cardoso, through the journalistic covering of the Finance Minister's activities." The communiqué stressed that Globo "is not backing any candidate and is covering the electoral campaign with impartiality." Before the newspapers started to release a transcription of what was said by Ricupero, the minister tried to explain his comments as being only "irony against the criticism that his

interviews were serving Fernando Henrique Cardoso's campaign." Nobody was buying this. After having his letter of resignation accepted by president Itamar Franco on Saturday, Ricupero himself, in a talk to a friend, agreed that he had sinned against humility. After that, he even went on TV, cried, accepted all the blame, excused himself, and assumed "en- 3, tire responsibility for that moment of weakness." He even tried to explain how the devil made him do it: "I was probably victim, besides the physical fatigue, of a process in which the excessive exposure to the media and to the popular warmth inflated my vanity.. In some of those comments not even I can recognize myself." After the collective crucifixion of Ricupero, his gesture of humbleness also on TV so moved some Brazilians that there is already a movement to canonize the ex-minister. In an essay in newsweekly Veja, journalist Roberto Pompeu de Toledo wrote on the foot of a two-page analysis, "When the passion of the campaign has passed, maybe we will conclude that's not really a bad idea to teach the example of Ricupero to the children. Once upon a time in Brazil a minister, without knowing that his conversation was on the air, said a lot of nonsense on TV. "He revealed himself as frivolous and vain. Three days afterwards he made a speech saying that he couldn't "justify the unjustifiable". He apologized "for everything that may have disappointed whoever it be". He confessed that he had behaved in a "conceited and arrogant" manner. And he went away." Saint Rubens of Brazil. It even has a ring to it, doesn't it? •

increase again by 15% in 1994. Recently an American consortium from Raytheon won a bid to build a radar system for the Amazon, a project worth $1 billion. Until recently, the Yankee companies trying to do business with •Brazilians couldn't expect too much help from the American government. This has also changed. The Clinton administration has taken several steps to facilitate the life of those investors and exporters. One of the most concrete signs of this new commitment is the United States Commercial Center, a high class steel and glass building planted in a ritzy area of Sao Paulo. By the way, Sao Paulo loses only to Canada and Mexico (both part of NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement) as the favorite destination for American business people. Many of those are starting new businesses or bringing an injection of capital to companies already installed. There were 12 official US commercial missions to Brazil last year. This compares to only three in 1992. Last June, the American Commerce Secretary, Ron Brown led a troop of 22 Yankee entrepreneurs to Rio and Sao Paulo. It was the most select business group ever dispatched by the White House to Brazil. Brown made an effort to spell out the meaning of that trip. Talking to Vein magazine, he explained his match-making purpose, "This means that we are going to extend our hand, we are going to arrange marriages and empower the American private sector so it can do business in Brazil." Itamaraty (the Brazilian Foreign Ministry) doesn't seem surprised by this Yankee hoopla. "The commercial opening, the GNP growth and the perspective of economic stabilization all have contributed to renew interest in Brazil. Besides, we continue to be Latin America's main market and nobody can ignore us," says Celso Amorim, the Brazilian Foreign Minister. Despite high inflation and periods of stagnation, Brazil contributes substantially to Latin America's global GNP. While Argentina saw its contribution decrease from 19.2% in the 70s to 17.6 in 1992, and Mexico increased its share from 18% to 26% in the same period, Brazil not only maintained its leading position but also jumped from 31.3 to 37.6% in the identical time frame. The US may encounter some tough competition to gain Brazilian markets. The country has been courted intensely by the European Union, which wants to establish a closer commercial relationship with the countries of the MERCOSUL, the South American Common Market to which Brazil belongs. The EU countries seem ready to create a free commerce zone in which tariffs for a series of products would be eliminated. This European connection has been warming up recently. When compared to 1993, exports to Brazil from the EU have • increased by 25%. 17

Inflation and Biazil are two words that for a long time have gone hand-in-hand. The phenomenon of too many women for to few men has been observed in several big cities, including, Brasilia Belo i-lorizonte and Rio. And just like in inflationary economy, women are on the lookout for a good deal but never seem able to get any and they don't seem to know why. Is it that men do not want to get married? There's a movement in Venice, California, that is influencing thousands of lives in Bahia. Brazil. To the small committee hard at work on this side of the globe. this time consuming activity is a passionate endeavor. To many people in Salvador. Bahia. the Condom Carnival Project is a gift that can even save their lives, during their two week Carnaval festivities. Brazil holds Carnaval, the largest street party in the world, every year in the days preceding Ash Wednesday, a religious date that occurs generally in February. Ca rnav al brings revelry to the streets and to people from all over the world who go to Rio and more and more to Bahia just to be part of this massive and prolonged Mardi Gras. During Carnaval, the streets of Salvador are crowded with more than 2.5 million people dancing and celebrating within a three-mile radius. Unfortunately, violence. drug use and unprotected sex co-exist with the music, dancing and drinking of Brazil's Carnaval. This is where the Condom Carnival Project gets in the picture blending itself with the fantastic party atmosphere and offering revelers a chance to protect their own health. Condom Carnival Project '95 (CCP '95) is on the works right now. It will be at Bahia's mega-party in 95, just as they were there the current year, passing out brightly colored bracelets free-of-charge which contain one condom and pictorial instructions on how to use it. Coordinated by Lori Miller and Rhonda Brown the Condom Project is a movement to educate the Baianos about AIDS, 22

In Brazil the condom is popularly known as camisinha de Venus (Venus little shirt). Two American women created a program for distributing them by the thousands, as arm bands, during Carnaval in Bahia. The idea is catching like a contagious Carnaval marchinha. It's a life jacket, they say, a

other Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD's), and the proliferation of unwanted pregnancies that are all a result of Carnaval's party promiscuity. Miller. a graduate of UC Irvine and a participant in the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, is looking forward to her next participation in the project. "People are very much into the party, and the feeling of pleasure.- she says. commenting on the Carnaval spirit that takes over the population. She adds, "I want to help raise the consciousness of the consequences of unsafe sex during this time of high risk. Although the condom bracelets are very colorful and fun to wear, the message is serious. We also want the campaign to reach out to everyone. young and old, poor and rich. Last year everybody loved them." In February 1994, Miller and Brown passed out 10,000 of these hand-wrapped condom bracelets at Carnaval. For the next ycar the Project plans to send 20,000 condoms to Bahia to be made into bracelets by adolescents in Bahia, who will participate themselves in the Carnaval festivities. These young people are one of the main target populations that Miller and Brown want to influence with their campaign. Brown, a Hughes Aircraft Engineer from Yale University, says. "Public school is not good there. It's not mandatory to go to school — or at least there's no enforcement. The teachers are on strike often. There is no sex education in school and children have to become mature quickly.- She adds, "Condoms are difficult to get there. A month's supply will cost around $30. at least one-third of the average monthly salary for the majority' of the people in Bahia. It is very difficult." The Condom Project version 1994 gained support from a few American consciousness raising groups. including ACT UP Miami headed by Mitchell Wcissner. and the International Society for the Preservation of the Tropical Rainforest. Brown and Miller and their committee are looking forward to gaining many more official supporters. They are also in the process of making the Condom Carnival Project an established non-profit organization, visiting Brazil every year to spread their safe sex message. NEWS from BRAZIL - OCTOBER 1994

If genius is what scientist Thomas Alva Edison once told an interviewer, "one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration", artist Sandra Zeminian Birnbaum has no reason to complain in the inspiration department. "I tried o get a job in that area," she onfided, "but after so many rejections I gave it up and decided to go on my own." At the same time she had been working with ceramics for two years, perfecting her echnique, but not committing erself to it. It was only when she ecame pregnant with her son Zebi at the idea to fully dedicate her me to ceramics came about. She anted to work at home, and cemics gave her this option. Zebi Designs. Sandra loves to sell because of the social contact this part of the job allows her to have. "People are my passion. I am an artist without private life. Many artists can't live without a brush. I can't live without a telephone," she admits. The artist likes also to follow the track of her production, "I like to know where my pieces are going, and who is buying them." "The ups and downs of this business keep me alive," Sandra notes. "I love this gambling side of my art, and its unstable nature brings the adrenaline. I need to keep me going. I get highsonD4oplt. and on the instatWiittoefont). busfness." ZLi Dr-sig s has still loftier goals fr; ndra's first pottery pieces in black and white, showing c influence from her three-year graphic design training. Ceramics became to her "a medium, a canvas where I apply my skills of graphic designs." A native of So Paulo, Sandra settled in California after having traveled extensively throughout the world. She lived in London for a year and a half, where she studied fashion design. She also spent some time in Australia. Asia, and in the Pacific Islands. In these places she acquired a comprehensive view of the cilvels4y qf these cultures, and gained a sensitivity that has helped to define her own style. Lately Sandra has tuned her artistic acumen to the African culture, and translated this strong influence through such collections ,as Mask and Black Lady. In turn :she gained the opportunity to be ...well recognized and established lathe Afro-American community, which received her and her art with open arms. For seven years now, she has been exposing and selling her work at the African Marketplace and Culture Faire, an annual African-American showcase that happens in Los Angeles on three weekends in August and September. This car, the festival producers asked her to create the festival's posters. 25

In Brazil, the 34 year old artist had her first contact with clay in 1979, when she learned classic sculpture with artist Dino in his studio in the outskirts of Sao Paulo. At that time she started painting with oil pastels and charcoal. She also holds a BA in Industrial Design and Architecture from the Mackenzie University in Sao Paulo. Sandra uses mainly black, white, orange, yellow, pink, lilac, blue, light and dark green in a mixture that varies from three to all nine colors, according with the designs of the pieces. She may simply compose using orange, white, and black as with the elementary movements of the Horse collection, or a combination of all her colors as in the cubist Zebicasso collection. The designs differ only in theme within the same graphic line and color hues, displaying the artist's exceptional style and personality. For Sandra the inspiration for the popular Zebicasso collection, with a Ziraldo (famous Brazilian cartoonist) meets Picasso mood, came from "a passion for Pablo Picasso, my favorite artist. I identify myself with him. I like his cynicism, the obvious that is not. I like the

interpretation that people give. Zebicasso gave me an important starting point, helping me acquire my own style. It inspired me and made me feel more secure about my work. Zebicasso helped me to use colors with more determina-

tion, and this color combination attracts people. The outline is definitely Picasso. I created a new line that is becoming more Zebi than Casso, with a more defined and complex

style" From Sandra's 14 different designs thee are three best-sellers that appeal to many different tastes: the popular Cat, the mysterious and ethnic Black Lady, and Zebicasso. All lines carry a unique and distinctive humor, drawing a great variety of public, which motivates her to expand • , her collections. The magazine Bon Apetit displayed Sandra's pottery in the cover of its January '94 and August '93 issues. Her works are sold at the American Art Museum gift shop and Wild Blue at Melrose, both in Los Angeles Los Angeles; at the Del Mano Gallery in Pasadena, at the Ihilani Resort in Honolulu, Hawaii, and at the Resource Design in Las Vegas. Sandra plans to take her art to the East coast in the future, but before she will exhibit her work in Brazil this December together with the works of the photograpier and friend Carla Guimaraes, at the in stpdio• Rejane Bezak, in Sao Paulo.

The singer-composer used the stage to destroy this image. In 1968, with Roda Viva, a semiautobiographical play about the bonfire of vanities that's showbiz, in which blood and livers (the theme was that the public devoured the artist) were thrown at the public, he was able to infuriate almost everyone. Right wing extremists invaded the stage in Sao Paulo and beat up the actors. By 1968 the tropicalismo movement was going strong and Chico involuntarily joined the debate between old and new. Many accused him of dwelling in the past for which he responded in a magazine article, "not everything crazy is ingenious, not everything lucid is old." In the late 60's and through the 70's, however, Chico would join the tropicalistas, namely Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, and Gal Costa among others, in the fight against censorship and the military regime that implemented it. Song lyrics were tampered with and a large number were prohibited all together. Of all the musicians in Brazil, Chico was one of the most plagued by the censors and for this reason is considered one of the main defenders ofverdadeira musica popular brasileira (true Brazilian popular music). His musical Calabar was forbidden from the stage and the title was mutated to Chico Canta. Even the original album cover was changed. In an interview with newsweekly magazine Veja in October 1976 Chico commented: "Censorship has to stop and never return. It mutilates what's characteristic of an epoch. These young people who are just beginning to play music, when all their first attempts - and there are certainly many, and many which we don't even know about - are banned, that produces in them a monstrous self-censorship. "That's disastrous for all types of creative activity. Today we see a generation born in an age of censorship, for whom the censor's stamp is as familiar as their passport. For me, for a generation raised practically without censorship, it's shocking to have to hand your lyrics over to 34

some official - and sometimes very personal lyrics, since all creativity is a kind of personal statement - who then examines them and decides whether or not they are fit to be published. For someone growing up today, everything is different. "That's why so many people have turned to writing their lyrics in English. They get through easier. Today's young writer sees that he's been censored and thinks to himself, 'Next time I'll make sure I do it right.' He thinks that he has done something completely wrong." Chico, like many other artists and intellectuals, was forced into exile but he returned after a short time. He learned that he would have to get his message across with hidden symbols, metaphors and lyrical tricks. Many of his best songs escaped the censors' scissors in this fashion. "Chico positioned himself against the military dictatorship many times using the strategy of cunning lyrics to obtain approval from the federal censorship service," said Guilhermina Junqueira, a librarian from Belo Horizonte, capital of Minas Gerais. "He even used the pseudonym Julinho Adelaide to publish "Acorda Amor". When the authorities found out this new stratagem, they started forcing all composers started to present an official ID with their compositions Many of the songs that did slip by contained some of Chico's most biting and harsh lyrics. In "Apesar de Voce" ("In Spite of You") Chico sings "How will you strangle our people, when they sing in front of you, in spite of you. You're going to have a hard time of it." He was able to present his harsh criticism of dictator general Medici as it was a samba of a scorned lover. In this case, the censor missed the irony of the lyrics at the first, but the song ended up being banned after becoming a hit. With no song written by him authorized by the military, in 1974, he released an album singing only other people's tunes. The name of the record: Sinai NEWS from BRAZIL - OCTOBER 1994

Fechado (Red Light). When the censorship did end, Chico was an obvious hero but he wasn't quite comfortable with being labeled a protest singer. "Certain circles use this term in order to force me into an outsider's role," he once said. In fact, many people look to another side of this artist and find a different strength. Few composers have touched the feminine spirit with quite the same delicacy as Chico.. According to writer and producer Ruth Escobar, Chico's understanding of women isn't only intellectual, but profoundly sensitive and delicate. Historian Maria Judite Santos from Minas Gerais agreed. "His lyrics are pure poetry, his words are fantastic," she said. "Sure he was a hero against the dictatorship but what touches me

most is his comprehension of the feminine soul in the beauty of his words." Of the 286 songs written from 1964 to 1989 by Chico Buarque, 129 of them speak about women. Many in the first person! Dori Caymmi, son of the great Dorival, probably said it best when he stated that Chico brought a lyrical quality to the songs that was unheard of before, "He had an ability to speak to the masses with first class lyrics that struck you suddenly and directly." Last year's release of Paratodos was ample proof that this ability hasn't been lost over the years. Now it's 1994 and a grateful nation says "Happy Birthday" and thank you. And this new admirer has 50 eventful years of catching up to do.

REVIEW

From Rio with disdain About half of the letter; of One Art were sent from Brazil where the author, renowned American poet Elizabeth Bishop, lived for 15 years. They show a colorful country but also make the old point that familiarity breeds contempt. KATHERYN GALLANT One Art, by Elizabeth Bishop, letters selected and edited by Robert Giroux (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 668 pp.. $35) Probably more than a few readers of News from Brazil had their first introduction to Brazilian culture and history in a book published in 1962 by Time-Life Books. As was the case in the books in the Life World Library series, the editors of Life commissioned an author who knew the country well and could explain it clearly and briefly to readers in the US. Elizabeth Bishop, the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet who had lived in Brazil since 1952, seemed to be an especially good choice. 38

LETTERS :E....L. E. J. IL 111:,

.1 0

She was a friend of the renowned Brazilian poets Manuel Bandeira. Vinicius de Moraes, and Joao Cabral de Melo Neto. as well as the controversial politician Carlos Laccrda. Bishop had translated modern Brazilian poetry, and also the delightful Afinha Vida de Aleninai The Diary of "Helena Aforley," with empathy and verve. But most of all. Bishop had an acute feeling for geography and ordinary and amusing --but telling -- detail. One Art, the recently published selection of Elizabeth Bishop's letters, shows off her sensitivity to landscape and details quite well. As I continued reading, however. I could not shake off the impression that Bishop seemed to patronize the Brazilian people and their culture. In the first months of Bishop's stay (when she was settling into Rio de Janeiro and Petropolis with her cultivated and strong-willed lover, Lota de Macedo Soares) Bishop's effusive comments about the generosity and "craziness" of the Brazilians, as well as her offhanded jokes about the extreme slowness of the Brazilian postal service (two weeks from PetrOpolis to Rio!) seemed charming and quaint. But when Bishop stated that none of her servants "ever learn[ed] anything," or that even the nicest Brazilians were "uncooperative, self-indulgent, spoiled -- and yes, corrupted," 1 wondered whether her attitudes had made the negative traits NEWS from BRAZIL-OCTOBER 1994

of her Brazilian friends more noticeable. While squabbling with Time-Life Books about the editing of her book on Brazil, Bishop wrote to her favorite aunt, "what they know about Brazil would fit on the head of a pin and yet the gall, the arrogance, the general condescension!" Finally, after the coup d'etat of 1964 (which Bishop had enthusiastically supported, and had admonished her correspondents to "Just don't believe what the US papers say"), Bishop wrote that she was pessimistic about Brazil's future and that she was "maybe" against democracy, "for all I know, after the latest events here." I believe that Bishop loved the highlands around Petropolis, the Baroque houses and churches of °tiro Preto, and the panorama of Rio, but that, in her opinion, the people were uneducatable primitives. For Elizabeth Bishop, Brazilians were tinnily children who needed the protection and discipline of their Uncle Sam. Robert Giroux, Bishop's publisher and friend for over 20 years, has made a wide-ranging selection of Bishop's letters. Although nearly half of its more than 600 pages are devoted to the letters that Bishop wrote from Brazil during the period 1952-1967, Bishop's first letter in One Art was written in 1928, when she was 17. The last letter was composed on the day of her death in 1979. Giroux's introduction helps to illuminate Bishop's life of wandering. Orphaned at age five, she was shunted off from relative to relative, and kept at boarding school as much as possible. Bishop's fifteen-year residence in Brazil was as close to a home base that she ever had. Lota de Macedo Soares gave Bishop support and stability. But Lota was herself not very stable: she committed suicide in 1967 at Bishop's New York home. Lota's political activities (which included the design and construction of the Parque do Flamengo in Rio) seem to have intensified Bishop's negativism about Brazilians, although Bishop was proud of Lota's successes in a culture known for its machismo. One drawback that I found in Giroux's editing is that there were almost no explanatory notes in the te.xt. The average American reader -- even one who is familiar with Bishop's poetry and her friendships with Marianne Moore. Robert Lowell, Mary McCarthy, and other authors -- knows nearly nothing about Brazil 30 to 40 years ago. Those who can wade through the politics may take Bishop's decidedly biased comments as the whole truth. Those who want to know more about Brazilian politics of the 1950s and '60s should read such books as John W.F. Dulles' compulsively readable and sympathetic biography of Lacerda: Ruth Leacock's vivid. left-leaning Requiem for Revolution; and especially Thomas Skidmore's towering classic, Politics in Brazil, 1930-1964. As a de facto autobiography of a great American poet, One Art is an excellent book. For Brazilians and ai INvveve.r, "Dona for Aniericalis who love Brazil,s lO Elizabettchy," the poeta gringa, arnmg and a reproach. Her attitude was shared m influential Americans of her time, and to sh aally US policy shape °wards Brazil. Thirty years later, have we managed to go beyond that unequal relationship? I hope we will v at least try. NEWS from BRAZIL - OCTOBER 1994

Excerpt (August 24, 1952) I think it is getting warmer now, and that "winter" is over. However my grasp on the seasons is pretty tentative. We have beautiful flowers, and a beautiful vegetable garden. This is the month for one particular small orchid to bloom -- "Olhos de Boneca -Eyes" -- very delicate, pale lavender, with dark round spots in the middle. My Portuguese is progressing slowly because I get so little chance to practice it, all the Brazilians I meet being so fluent in English. But! like it very much --packed with diminutives, augmentatives, endearments, etc. "Buttonholes" are -button-houses." Lota calls the workmen flower,- "my beauty," "my son," etc. -- when she isn't calling them names equally preposterous in the other direction. Did I tell you that the janitor in Rio called me -Madame, my daughter"?

Excerpt (June 7, 1962) In spite of all Brazil's troubles the atmosphere has been very cheerful the last two days, because the Brazilian fittebol (soccer) team is doing so well and will have a chance at the World's Championship again. Day before yesterday they beat Spain, a very close game. All the maids in this apartment house were listening to the radios with their heads hanging over the inside patio -- ours was weeping for joy. This morning she asked me about the new pipes being laid along the beach, and I told her it was the new water system and due to a loan from the US (trying to spread a little goodwill whenever I can!). She replied, -Well, l' in very sorry. I know the Senhora is American -- but Amarildo is still better!" -- Amarildo being the player who scored both goals and thus beat Spain. I think that futebol is something you'd like here -- like baseball in the USA. The players arc incredibly fast and graceful.

NEWS from BRAZIL-OCTOBER 1994

ver the decades, the perennial nature of Bossa Nova has flirted with the careers of many artists with varied results: Sarah Vaughan had it, Frank Sinatra didn't. Stan Getz had it, Ella didn't. But Bossa's popularity never seems to wane and every once in a while Bossa blesses us with real gem. Southport Record's Brazilian Heart by April Aloisio (pronounced Ah-loy-see-oh) is one such album. This Chicago native possesses a voice that's perfect for Bossa's light style and her delivery allows for that familiar sort of charm that all great Bossa recordings seem to have. But Aloisio doesn't stop there. Brazilian Heart has two sides, and the other is decidedly jazzy.

Brazilia Notas much anticipated late isa Monte CD is in th s this month. So is ofsio's Brazilian also a look a at's new an •#*: fn 1-1raz lia! .ound r.rjrIrj rY• AMS Marisa Monte NEWS from BRAZIL - OCTOBER 1994

The 16 track album Opens with the Gershwins' standard "The Man I Love," which immediately establishes Brazilian Heart's musical direction and points to the confidence of Aloisio's singing. Accompanied only by acoustic guitar and harmonica, the Bossa styling is unmistakable. And the deeper yott look into Brazilian Heart, the more endearing it becomes. Antonio Carlos Jobim's "One Note Samba" and "0 Morro Nao Tem Vez" carry the Aloisio signature; a light breezy voice that conveys both personality and understanding by transcending the lyrics, be they in English or Portuguese. Aloisio's range as a jazz vocalist gives her the opportunity to stretch out on several songs including Bud Powell's "Duid Deed," with a story line that's so perfectly written for Aloisio that it could be autobiographical. Other album choices such as "E Hermeto" (an improvised tribute to the Brazilian master), Cole Porter's "Love For Sale" and "Nica's Dream" all display April Aloisio's vocal versatility. The best moments with Brazilian Heart are reserved for two more Jobim classics.. "So Tinha

de Ser com Voce" with it's long, rolling melody and story line has never sounded better. I don't know how she does it, but April's Portuguese is both sultry and playful and her interplay with guitarist Paulinho Garcia will take you right back to Copacabana during its heyday 60's. "Meditation" opens gently with another talented guitarist, David Onderdonk providing a selftitled solo introduction to Aloisio's enchanting recreation. When April Aloisio sings, you can't help but be pulled into the song. April Aloisio isn't Brazilian, but her heart surely is. And if Bossa's return to popularity has caught your ear, well then, maybe the title of her album applies to you as well. Brazilian Heart by April Aloisio is available at Tower Records. Singer Marisa Monte's latest CD Rose and Charcoal on Blue Note Records' new world pop label, Metro Blue, is set for in-store release on October 18, and will be an instant hit with fans of this talented singer from both sides of the equator. With two other US releases under her belt, Monte is poised on the edge of international pop success, and Rose and Charcoal has all the ingredients to make this goal a reality. It wasn't too long ago that Caetano Veloso publicly decried the lack of talented singers and musicians in Brazil, to replace the Jobims, Gilbertos and Nara Leoes of Brazil. Caetano need worry no longer. From the opening track of "Maria de Verdade" and continuing on through all 13 selections, Monte's spirited voice twists and turns through a kaleidoscope of traditional Brazilian musical styles, melded to the contemporary pop of her own country and the rest of the world. Singing both in English and Portuguese, Marisa Monte effortlessly crosses cultural lines without pause. Witness her "Pale Blue Eyes." Very American, (not unlike Bonnie Raitt) and totally 41

Brazilian. My favorites? I love the quiet serpitude of "Alta Noite" with its reflective orchestral setting, and "0 Ceti" and "Bern Leve" are both vintage Marisa Monte. The sambas "Balanca. Pema" and "Esta Melodia" are playfully snappy, and "Enquanto Isso" is wonderful with its poetic English, but "Na Estrada" with its clever lyrics and trop-pop sound really stays with me. And hats off to producer Arto Lindsay, who has hit on the perfect combination of material, arrangements and creative perspective to launch Marisa Monte to the heights she deserves. Monte's range of style and powerful delivery are a pleasant surprise, given the disappointing recordings released by many of her contemporaries recently. Wait! Is that Gal Costa singing on "Segue o Seco" and the sad samba "Danca da Solidao?" No, it's Marisa Monte doing the record that Gal Costa should have made... There will always be comparisons to Gal, but that's okay. Marisa Monte and Gal Costa belong to different generations and different perspectives. Someday, people will be comparing other, younger singers to Marisa Monte, and Caetano Veloso will listen and smile. Here's "What's Hot!" as reprinted from the current issue of The Brazilian Music Review: dimminntlitemsta

Marina Lima - A Tug On The Line (World Pacific) Building on the success of last year's self-titled CD, Lima puts forth a solid collection of musical poetry in English and Portuguese. There's pop potential with "It's Not Enough" and "Something that We Missed" and the instrumental version of "Nightie Night" could be an NAC sleeper. Domestic Leo Gandelman -Made In Rio (Verve/Polygram) Talented saxophonist returns with a catchy collection of techno-pop rhythms ("Sidewalk, "New Day" and Barroso's "Bahia"). The Beatles' "Long and Winding Road," "Inner Feelings" and a loving tribute to Rio de Janeiro with "Wonderful City" receive Leo's warm touch. With Joe Sample. Tavinho Moura- Cabo'Agua (Velas) Minas-based guitarist brings his seasoned talent to a debut solo setting. A former writer with Milton Nascimento, Moura polish and poise are evident in each of the 15 selections, mostly centered on themes from the rural Brazilian midwest. Perfect choice for a relaxing evening. Import.

"One of this year's best albums for contemporary Brazilian Instrumental Music. A stunning debut CD!" THE BRAZILIAN MUSIC REVIEW

TORCUATO MARIANO PARADISE STATION 42

Leila Pinheiro - Coisas do Brasil (Polygram) Now regarded by most as Brazil's top female singer, Pinheiro delivers warmly on a suburb collection of vocal masterpieces, including the title track, "Ao Poeta" and ten others. A top seller import seller. Caetano Veloso/Gilberto Gil Tropicana 2 (Elektra/None suc h) Sentimental reunion of Tropicana masters results in an unmatched set of new and familiar songs, with Gil's "Tradicao" and the rapp-ish "Haiti." Other surprises offer a reflective "Desde que o Samba E Samba" and Jimmy Hendrix' "Wait Until Tomorrow." For Brazilian baby boomers. Domestic Rosa Passos - Festa (Velas) Somehow Passos has made a pact with the devil to gain access to Joao Gilberto's musical soul, and she got the better part of the deal. One listen to the opening track "Dunas" and you'll be convinced, but 11 more tracks, including Edu Lobo's "Can: deias," and Jobim's ''Amor em Paz" will call for repeated play. Our recommendation? For the third year in a row Brazilians are gearing up for the Miss Brasil-USA competition, a show that will choose on November, 17, in Miami, the most beautiful Brazilian-American young lady. The beauty pageant, which had the participation of seven states in 1992, its debuting year, has grown now to comprise 16 states. The prizes have never been so big. The winners of the competition will be taking home prizes worth more than $30,000 including cash, plane tickets, publicity contracts, jewelry and clothes. As in previous V ears, the jury will be made up by famous Brazilian personalities. Among those invited as judges for the final, this year, are TV personality and stylist Clodovil, Miss Universe Martha Vasconcellos, and actress Therezinha Sodre. The different states will be choosing their representatives this month. California, for example, will select three candidates (from San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco) on October 22 at Gabiano's Restaurant in San Francisco. For information or to register call (415) 921-3353. Ana Galva°, 1st Miss Brasil-USA

Now, with this unique American Accent Program, its possible to eliminate any unwanted accent —easily, quickly, and forever! Here's how it works: By practicing exercises in American-style English vowels and consonants, you'll immediately feel comfortable going beyond pronunciation and into intonation, or the "melody" of American speech. All exercises are read by "native speakers" of American English, so you can be sure you are practicing the most accurate pronunciation. After just a few sessions, you'll experience: • New willingness to "speak up" • Heightened self-confidence • Improved business & personal relationships • A strong feeling of acceptance Designed by The Ford Language Institute, a worldwide-recognized leader in speech enhancement and training, The American Accent Program includes: eight audio cassettes-eight full hours of instruction and practice, an illustrated Complete Set:

"I never realized how much my Southern drawl held me back before I started using this Accent Elimination Program. Now, instead of being constantly looked down upon, by my clients, they look up to me!" —Heavy Equipment Salesman "Since coming to this country, I have seen a lot of opportunity.. until going through this program and making a real effort to reduce my heavy accent, I couldn't take advantage of it. Now, I speak with confidence, and people seem to trust me more..." —Real Estate Salesperson
