Brazil has been deafening the world's ears with the scream and the blood of its disadvantaged. It started last year with an unexplainable massacre inside Carandiru, a overpopulated penitentiary in Sao Paulo, where more than 100 prisoners were killed.

And in the last few months, there were two more case of murderous violence in Rio against street kids, and against families in a favela.

All of those occurrences show

how thin or even inexistent is the line separating the outlaw from the law enforcer. The 111 inmates, the eight meninos de rua killed at point blanx at Candelaria church, the 21 slum dwellers assassinated, they all were murdered by the same police from whom the victims had a right to expect protection.

If the past is any indication, the crimes will continue unpunished as it has happened in other occasions when policemen were found guilty.

It's natural that a police force underprepared, underpaid and overworked be a nest of corruption and banditry. The Military Police are only mirroring the decay that has attacked

other sectors of society, starting with the highest authorities in Brasilia.

For a split second, it seemed as if times had changed. Now, the authorities start the round up of the usual suspects even before anybody has asked for it. The rhetoric has been very swift.

Worried with what The New York Times and the media in general might say, president Itamar Franco has instructed his foreign diplomatic corps to react as soon as Brazil gets beaten.

He is one of those who believe that bad news only exists because the press screams it from the roofs of its first pages.

Night therapy The lack of doctors in Brazil has forced more than one public medical clinic to close their doors. That's what happened to Posto Medico de Neves, in Sa'o Goncalo, Rio de Janeiro.

Some people, however, have found a way not to let all these beds and rooms go to waste. While still closed during the day, after 10 PM the Posto Medico turns into a busy high-rotation motel to attend to sex-starved patients. With the help of government officials, prostitutes from the neighborhood are using the building to receive clients.

Talk about entrepreneurial minds.

Piracy & punishment

It's been 30 years since the Great Train Robbery in England.

Ronald Biggs, the most infamous of the villains (they seem to have been converted into heroes by the British tabloids) among the 18 who perpetrated the $40 million assault, celebrated recently the date, in Rio, close to his Brazilian family and friends, without having served time in jail. Ronald Biggs, 64, ran away to Brazil and was never extradited. The Brazilian justice denied the request for extradition alleging that the outlaw had a Brazilian son, Mike. BBC has promoted a meeting of the participants of the robbery in Rio for a documentary.

Biggs, who spent his part ofthe loot ($300,000), before arriving in Brazil, is preparing a book where he promises to tell "all the truth including about those who didn't get caught by the authorities. No names, however." Crook, yes; snitch, no.

Low flight A pigeon's place is in the kitchen, or more precisely in the pan, according to police officer Alberto Camara de Oliveira from Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro. Oliveira believes he has found a practical application for the proverbial kill two birds with one stone. The official says the birds should be used in the campaign against hunger in Rio. Their killing at the same time would rid Copacabana beach (picture), always according to him, of dirty and disease-transmitting pigeons. "Fried, they are superb," guarantees Oliveira, who also wants to put in jail, from three months to one year, those who feed the birds.

Microsoft should be soon $10 million richer thanks to a decision by Sao Paulo judge Ricardo Carvalho. He condemned Prologica, one of the biggest Brazilian computer companies, to pay that sum for having pirated MS-DOS, the computer operating system created by the American software giant. That was the biggest penalty imposed by the Brazilian justice in a case of piracy. "The decision is a reward for our losses and it projects Brazil as a country with laws tto protect the intellectual property, that are enforced.," said Mauro Not, Microsoft's general director in Brazil. The decision, naturally, has been appealed.

Not the A list Many people in Porto Ferreira, a little town in the interior of Sao Paulo, are barely sleeping these days. This has been happening since July, when the city woke up plastered with more than 100 signs containing a list of 420 people labeled as "bores" by the anonymous denouncer. Less than one week later, another list appeared, now with the names of54 men that were supposedly betrayed by their wives, and the menace: "If you cannot find your name, don't worry. It will be here next time." Some have already tried to sue the authors. Problem is nobody knows who they are. And there's talk that the next list will contain names of the betrayed women.

For the American producers of Wild Orchid, the Yankee version of playwright Nelson Rodrigues' Boca de Ouro (Golden Mouth), the shooting of the movie at times seemed more like a documentary. They had filmed in the Candelaria church just days before the massacre of children there.

They also were in a cross gunfire when filming at favela (shanty town) of Mineira, at the same time 21 people were killed by avenger policemen at favela do Vigario Geral. Producer Jeff (Emerald Forest, Stand

Sao Paulo: the name evokes images of what has become the world's 3rd largest city, right after Tokyo and Mexico City, and the largest in South America. Greater Sao Paulo metropolitan area has an estimated population of 19.5 million people. What we have here is a mixture of New York's crowds, Tokyo's fast-paced work ethic, Los Angeles's smog, Paris's elegance and Rome's Latin charm. Often overlooked by tourists who roam the Amazon or swim in Rio's warm Atlantic waters, Sao Paulo is the motor of Brazil's economy, its most heterogeneous city, and has many stories to tell.

Starting as a humble, remote Portuguese colonial outpost in the mid sixteenth century, modern S-ao Paulo was the result of a merger between quasi-military expeditionary men called bandeirantes and zealous Jesuit priests driven to convert the Indians. First established on a plateau barely 50 miles from the Atlantic, the adjoining terrain was one of the most formidable wildernesses within the Brazilian colony of that time.

The Paulista bandeirantes were subsistence farmers and fairly self-sufficient; though detached somewhat from the more prosperous coastal plantations and the colonial administration, they nevertheless considered themselves loyal and to the Portuguese crown.

Realists at heart, however, the Paulistanos looked always to the west - to the sertdo - when thinking about their future. Unlike most of the coastal cities during the colonization, Sao Paulo never received a large influx of blacks. The native Tupi Indians diligent and resourceful - intermixed with white stock of European descent, mostly Portuguese and Spaniards. Subsequent waves of Germans, Italians and later, Japanese, would complete the cycle. The city grew slowly, each subsequent wave of immigrants becoming Paulistano in behavior.

At Shopping Paulista, one of Sao Paulo's major Praca das Bandeiras. shopping centers, lingerie and colorful shirts under the brand-name Nabiran sell briskly. At an average price of about $10 per item, Korean shop owner and clothing manufacturer Won Kyu Lee sells about 150 items per day, and manufactures 50,000 items per month. His gross sales? About $500,000.00 per month.

Praca Pani and Mr. Lee's lingerie shop are just simply two opposite ends of the exploitation of cheap labor by foreigners which mobilizes Sao Paulo's clothing and textile industries. And there is even a violent, ugly side to this clandestine labor.

Cases of beatings, escapes, and forced labor under the vigilant watch of hired henchmen and German shepherds are fairly common. .1111 Prostitute at Luz train station.

On one extreme are the Bolivians: humble, hungry and eager to work at any price, and knowing little or no Portuguese - and at times not even Spanish. They are the perfect victims for exploitation. Working an average of 16 hours per day, and sometimes more, they earn in some cases less than the legal minimum salary in Brazil (around $60 a month).

Innocent victims of Bolivia's unrelentless recession, they are subjected to appalling working conditions. Most arrive in Brazil on a six month tourist visa and start to work almost immediately. After their time expires they become ilegais, illegal aliens.

And although more than 15,000 Bolivians have already updated their documents before the Brazilian Federal Police, it is estimated that there are still 150,000 illegals, in Sao Paulo alone.

And most of those are indentured into the sweatshop industry.

Entire neighborhoods like Born Retiro and Bras have been absorbed by hundreds of the fly-by-night sweatshops.

Although no one knows for certain how many shops there actually are, or how much this industrial sector produces, it is estimated that there are at least 2,500 Korean-owned businesses. Ninety percent are engaged in clothing manufacture. Producing an average of 7 million retail pieces per month. At an average overall price of $5 per item, a conservative average comes to about $30 million dollars per month, that is about 360 million dollars per year. Not bad at all!

Bolivian Mafia? - Many of those Bolivians sustaining the textile industry not only work with Koreans, but also live side by side. Literally! Working an average of 12 hours per session, they stop working only when the Korean owners close shop; in the majority of cases, that never happens before midnight. They sleep in the very same workshop they work in, and eat together with their employers. The setup seems to be beneficial to both parties: the Koreans keep the turnover low, the Bolivians have no living expenses and are able to save most of their salaries, which on the average is about $200 per month.

grated to Sao Paulo just three years ago, set up shop, and has had up to eight Bolivians at one time living in his combination homebusiness. "Right now there is a Bolivian Mafia," he says. They place ads in newspapers in Santa Cruz and La Paz, offering jobs to Bolivians who want to work for Koreans." He is obviously referring to those Bolivians who have also raised businesses and exploited their own countrymen as well.

However, more favorable winds seem to be blowing from the south; Bolivians are now migrating to Argentina to work for Koreans there. The grapevine says that people can earn even up to a thousand dollars a month there.

The situation draws similarities to the Brazilian exodus towards the U.S. and Japan. The first wave of Bolivians came during the 50's and increased during the 70's and even the 80's, in spite of Brazil's unmerciful recession. "Many Bolivians seem to think that Brazil, in spite of everything, is still a paradise," said Marcelo Quiroga Obregon, Bolivia's Consul in Sao Paulo, in a recent interview to Veja magazine.

Sometimes, violence also sticks out its ugly head.

Angelica Aduviri Curia, a 29 year-old girl from La Paz, was offered $50 per month as a seamstress to work in Sao Paulo. A Bolivian family from Sao Paulo paid her fare. Impressed that she would be earning almost twice her salary in Bolivia for doing the same job, she accepted. After having worked for over two months for a Bolivian shop owner, however, she returned back to her country, penniless and disenchanted. Her story? The employer refused to pay her the agreed salary until her one-way ticket and food expenses were covered.

"There was never enough food for everyone. Whoever arrived first got the li10

on's share,"complained Curia.

She tried to escape ,was caught and beaten. Trained German shepherds were used to watch the premises as well. On her second attempt, she was able to flee, and helpful Police officers escorted her to the Bolivian consulate, which then arranged her trip back to Bolivia. "There were 14 and even 9 year old girls in there who also wanted to leave, but didn't have the courage to try." she told Police.

Angelica's story seems to be simply one more in Sao Paulo's Bolivian mill.

Undocumented Bolivian can work more than 15 hours a day.

It's horrendous!!!! lam originally from Brazil, but I have grown up and received all of my education here in the USA. I have also been for the past 15 years a court interpreter for both the Spanish and Portuguese languages. I know for a fact that some things cannot be translated literally, or they become offensive.

Such is the case in your article entitled "You, little nigger". "Nigger", in English is very offensive, and I can't understand how you are not aware of this fact. Where is your editor? Don't you hire people that are professional?

Don't you have professional translators in your staff? If you don't, you really have no business running a newspaper, let alone receive from innocent people for this horrendous paper of yours.

Since I just returned from Salvador where my African Brazilian friends educated me on the true situation of race in Brazil, it was satisfying to see your publication honestly tackle this important global issue.

Please find enclosed a letter I was compelled to write after an experience I had in Rio. This letter may not make a difference or change accepted practice. My charge however is to make sure people know that racial discrimination is unacceptable and must be challenged at each and every turn.

If African Americans can share any of our experiences in this struggle, it is that every incident has to be responded to directly. This approach is very important in Brazil where the

seductive perception of "all is racially well" is so widely accepted. Thank you for addressing a problem that affects us all.

(Excerpts of the letter: Mr. I3orghini, General President of North America yang Airlines. Dear Sir: On August 27, 1993, as I completed a wonderful three week vacation in Bahia, Brazil, I had a very unfortunate experience. In my attempts to embark upon my flight to Los Angeles, California, I was compelled to write you this letter.

When I came through Immigration, and continued to pass through the electronic check system, I was stopped and body searched by one of the female attendants. Since I heard no buzz of the electronic system, I was quite curious about the detaining.

From WO P.M. to 7:30 P.M., I observed no other persons, male of female, subjected to this kind of treatment. In fact, many people triggered the electronic equipment and were Iscanned with the hand held equipment, and then allowed to proceed.

When I questioned this procedure with the English speaking Information Agent, she could give no explanation for the differentiation. She did assure me it was not a case Of discrimination.

When we further questioned the Federal Police officer, who singled me out for inspection, the officer stated that no explanation would be given as he didโ ข not have to give one.

I hope that you will direct this letter to the appropriate authorities. As an African American woman, I appreciate the struggle your country has embarked upon to address the issue of racism.

!Rita LYGIA FAGUNDES TELLES Alonso foi para o quintal carregando uma bacia cheia de louca suja.

Andava corn dificuldade, tentando equilibrar a bacia que era demasiado pesada para seus bracinhos finos.

- Biruta, eh, Biruta - chamou sem se voltar.

0 cachorro saiu de dentro da garagem. Era pequenino e branco, uma orelha em pe e a outra completamente cafda.

- Sente-se at, Biruta, que vamos ter uma conversinha - disse Alonso pousando a bacia ao lado do tanque. Em seguida ajoelhou-se, arregacou as mangas da camisa grosseira e comecou a lavar os pratos.

Biruta sentou-se muito teso e atento, inclinando interrogativamente a abeca ora para a direita, ora para a esquerda, co rno se quisesse apreender rnalhor as palavras do seu dono. A oreffia caida ergueu-se um pouco mais, aiatanto a outra empinou, aguda e rata, Entre alas, formaram-se dois vancos fundos, pr6prios de uma testa franzida no esforco da meditacao.

- Lembra sim senhor! E nao adianta ficar af corn essa cara de doente, que nao acredito, ouviu? Ouviu, Biruta?! - repetiu Alonso lavarido furiosamente os pratos. Corn urn gesto irritado, arregacou as mangas que ja escorregavam sobre os pulsos Enos. Sacudiu as maos cheias de espuma.

Tinha maos de velho.

- Alonso, anda ligeiro corn essa folio! - gritou Ledufna, aparecendo por urn momento na janela da cozinha. - Ja. esta escurecendo, ten.ho que sair!

Voltou-se para o cachorro. E seu rostinho palido e anguloso se confrangeu de tristeza. For que Biruta nao se emenda, por que?- For que nao se esforcava urn,pouco para ser melhorzinho? Dona Zulu ja andava impaciente, Ledurna tambem, Biruta fez isso. Biruta fez aquilo Lernbrou-se do dia em que o cachorro entrou na geladeira e tirou de la a came. Ledufna ficou desesperada, vinham visitas para o jantar, precisava encher as pasteis. "Alonso, voce nao viu onde deixei a came?"

Ele estremeceu. Biruta! E disfarcadamente, foi a garagem no fundo do guintal, onde dormia corn o cachorro num velho colchao metido num ,angulo da parade. Biruta estava Id, deitado em cima do travesseiro, corn a posta de came entre as patas, comendo tranqiiilamente. Alonso arrancou-lhe a came, escondeu-a dentro da camisa e voltou a cozinha.

Deteve-se na porta ao ouvir Leduina queixar-se a Dona Zulu que a came desaparecera, aproximava-se a hora do jantar e o acoug-ue ja estava fechado, "que e que eu faco, Dona Zulu?!'

Ambas estavam na sala. Podia entrever a patroa a escovar freneticamente os cabelos. Ele entao tirou a came de dentro da camisa, e ajeitando o papal ja todo rota que a envolvia, entrou corn a pasta na mao.

- Esta aqui, Leduina.

- Mas falta urn pedaco! - exclamou a cozinheira.

- Esse pedaco que falta tirei para mirn. Eu estava corn vontade de corner urn bife e aprovertei quando voce foi na quitanda...

- Mas por que voce escondeu o resto?- perguntou a patroa, aproximando-se.

- Porque fiquei corn medo.

Ele ainda tinha bem viva na memOria a dor brutal que sentira nas maos corajosamente abertas para os golpes da escova. Lagrimas saltaram-lhe dos olhos, as dedos foram ficando intumescidos e rows, mas ela continuava batendo corn aquele mesmo vigor obstinado corn que escovara as cabelos, batendo, batendo como se nao pudesse parar nunca mais.

- Atrevido! Ainda te devolvo para o asilo, seu ladraozinho!

Quando ale voltou a garagem, Biruta ja estava la, as duas orelhas caidas, o focinho amid() entre as patas, piscando, piscando os olhinhos ternos. "Biruta, Biruta, apanhei por sua causa, mas nao faz mal. Nao faz ma!".

Biruta entao ganiu sentidamente. E lambeu-lhe as lagrimas. E lambeu-lhe as maos.

Isso tinha acontecido ha duas sernanas. E agora Biruta mordera toda a carteirinha de Ledufna. E se fosse a carteira de Dona Zulu?

- Hem, Biruta?! E se fosse a carteira de Daps Zulu?

Ja desinteressado e sonolento, Birutamasck ulna folha seca.

- For que voce nao arrebenta minhas - prosseguiu o menino elevando a arozaa sabe que tern todas as rninhas coisas para mar nao sabe? Pois agora nao te dou presente Natal, esta acabado. Voce vai verse ganha al coisa. Voce vai ver!...

Girou sobre os calcanhares, dando as costat ao cachorro. Resmungou urn pouco enquanto empithava a louca na bacia. Em seguida, caIou-se, esporando em silencio qualquer reacao por parte do cachorro. Como a reacao tardasse, lancou-lhe urn olhar furtivo.Birutadonnia profundamente.

Alonso entao sorriu,Aaauta era como uma crianca. For que nao entet4am isso? Nao fazia nada por mar, queria For que Dona Zulu finha tanta raiva dela? Ele s6 queria brincar, como as criancas... Por que Dona Zulu tinha tanta raiya de criancas e de cachorros?

Uma expressao desolada arnarfanho rostinho agudo do menino. "For cme„ tern que ser assim? 0 doutar e bo nunca se importou nem comigo n coma sea gente nao existisse. - Chega de dormir, seu vagabundo!

Biruta abriu os olhos, bocejou corn urn ganido e levantou-se, estirando as patas dianteiras, num longo espr.egurcamento.

0 menino equilibrou penosamente a bacia na cabeca e dirigm-se a cozinha. Biruta seguiu-o, aos pubs, mordendo-lhe os tornozelos, dependurando-se corn as dentes na baxra do seu avental.

- Aproveita, seu bandidinho! - riu-se Alonso.

- Aproveita que eu estou corn a mao ocupada, aproveita!

Assiut que colocou a bacia na mesa, ale inclinou-se para agarrar o cachorro. Mas Biruta esquivou-se, latindo. 0 merino vergou o corpo sacudido pelo riso.

- Ai, Ledufna, que o Biruta judiou de mim!...

A empregada Ras-se a guardar rapidamente a louca. Estendeu-lhe uma cacarola corn batatas: - Olha at para a seu jantar. Tern ainda arroz e came no lama.

-Mas sat eu que you jantar? - surpreendeu-se Alonso, ajeitando a cacarola no cob.

-.Hoje é dia de Natal, menino. Eles vaojantar fora, eu tambem tenho a minha festa. Voce vai jantar sozinho, Alonso inclinou-se. E espiou apreensivo para debaixo do fogao. Dois olhinhos-brilharam no escuro: Biruta ainda estava la. Alonso suspirou, aliviado. Era tao born quando Biruta resorvia se sentar! Melhor ainda quando dormia. Tinha entao a certeza de que nao estava acontecendo nada.

Era a tregua. Voltou-se para Ledufna.

Alonso tentou encobrir-lhe a fuga: - Biruta, Biruta! Cachorro mais bobo, deu agora de se esconder... - Voltou-se para a patroa. E sorriu palidamente, desculpando-se. - Ate de mim ele se esconde...

A mulher pousou a mao no ombro do menino: 14

Raimundo Cutrim from the Brazilian Federal Police says he will not rest until he finds the killers. Cutrirn is a friend of the Indians and he has already heard dozen of witnesses, but the thick vines are plenty in this forest. What really happened to the Yanomami Indians? Earlier accounts of the genocide reported among 70 and 120 deaths, including men, women and children. These high numbers were given by sertanista Francisco Bezerra after having interviewed three survivors of the massacre. Now, however, missionaries, anthropologists and Funai (National Foundation for the Indian) officials don't believe that more than 20 were killed.

A more plausible scenario was given by Bruce Albert, a French anthropologist, who heard four Indians who arrived at Funai's Tootobi post next to the border between Brazil and Venezuela. With bullet wounds on his face and back, Simao, one of the Yanomamis, told a story of many skirmishes before the final and lethal confrontation. After two days of conversations, Albert wrote the following report: "The Bokarahutumetheri includes two malocas (villages) - a third maloca is a one-day trip far from the other two and the Hwaximentheri are situated between them. Although they had previously had friendly relations with the garimpeiros (gold miners) close to the maloca, about 60 days ago, the invaders took one of their shotguns. When they complained, they were informed that some brave garimpeiros were coming to kill them. They left the mining area, and on their way home, they suffered an ambush, in which five Yanomamis were killed.

The Yanomami warriors came back, cremated the bodies of their relatives and, returned to the garimpo area and there killed one garimpeiro.

Arrow? Shotgun? Borduna (club)? We don't know. After one month or so, the various malocas got together into a tapiri - crilp built for emergency meetings. While waiting for an invitation to attend a party in a maloca of another region, three warriors went out and killed one garimpeiro in retaliation for their dead, while the others left together with the warrior who had invited them for the party.

Old Indians, women and children stayed in the tapiri. Based on the Yanomami practice, the Indians never thought the whites would murder women and children. The men are the first to leave the campsite to be followed later by the rest of the maloca Eighteen people had stayed at the 15

tapiri. Some women were picking fruit (ingci) or fishing when the garimpeiro arrived and started to shoot, killing 13.

The children were cut in pieces, the women had their stomachs cut with a dagger and an old blind lady was stomped to death.

Some of those injured were able to escape. Among them were two children with injuries on their faces, forearms and wrists, and an adult wounded on his thorax and maxillary.

Those who were able to escape went to the maloca where the party was taking place. They told what had happened and returned, continuing their trip via Venezuela until they, reached maloca of Makos, at Tootobi.

Before going to Tootobi, those whose relatives were killed returned to the location of the massacre, cremated the bodies, collected the ashes and went to Makos. Only one woman's body was not cremated because she had no relatives.

About 60 Yanomamis remain at maloca of Makos. They intend to plant and to build a shelter, since they don't want to go back to the place where they used to live because it has become an ugly location. The Orinoco river is located in Venezuela. The Haximu maloca is located in Venezuela. These are Brazilians killing Venezuelans in Venezuela."

Funai has confirmed Albert's report, after having disputed it at first.

A group of 17 officials with the Federal Police COT (Command of Tactical Operations) confirmed that the Haximu maloca is 10 miles inside Venezuela, while the tapiri where the massacre of women and children occurred is 6 miles from the Brazilian frontier. The case has become an international crisis in many fronts, since several countries including France and United States are asking some hard questions.

One of the answers came in the shape of a newly created department, the Amazon Ministry or, more precisely, the Ministerio Extraordinario para Articulacao das AcOes na Amazonia Legal.

The minister chosen was Rubens Ricupero, who was taken from the Washington Embassy, where he was being a very active ambassador.

Paulista Riciipero, a lawyer and career diplomat, is an expert in the area, having negotiated the Treaty of Amazon Cooperation that was signed in 1977.

The South is my country A Gaocha, residing in the U.S. and fed up with being a Brazilian, offers a detailed proposal on how to create a new country on the extreme South of what is now Brazil.

There was once a beautiful country, with a happy loving people and great natural beauty. Life was good then. This country's name is Brazil. Today, a great part of its natural beauty is destroyed.

The people, not so loving anymore, are very unhappy, and with good reason.

The country is run from Brasilia by a group of very corrupt politicians. Stealing public money and bribery are an everyday occurrence. Crime is rampant!

Unemployment is very high; inflation is out of control and the national debt is astronomic.

In the extreme south of Brazil there is a "tribe" called Os GaUchos. This group is a proud people, very idealist and a bit bellicose, maybe. We are very dissatisfied with the whole situation in Brazil. Besides, we don't relate too well; we are a different people. I am a Gaficha; I am also NEWS from BRAZIL - OCTOBER 1993

a separatist. But, if Rio Grande do Sul is to secede and to be run in the same old way by big government, it will not do much good. Here are my ideas for improving the lot of our "tribe" Gauchos and GaUchas, let's vote to secede from Brazil on the 20th of September of 1996! The new country will be called by any meaningful name to which the majority agrees, but for now I will call it Pais Modelo (Model Country).

Form of Government - The most important thing for us is to get rid of big government. This new country will be run by the people. We will vote to decide all major decisions every three years or so, in the beginning. However, we will need managers and representatives at all levels.

These managers and representatives will have the honor to serve the country for three-five years without salaries. They will give a few years to the service of the country because they love it and are proud of it.

Red tape and defense - All red tape and bureaucracy shall be eliminated. Also, this country shall have no army. The army shall be transformed into a national guard to help when needed in natural disasters and for national security. The police force should be retrained to be high class and very efficient, but kind. The only "document" that we need is a driver's license.

Education - Schools should be privately administered, but non-profit. Our children should receive excellent free schooling until the age of 16 or so.

Crime - Hard criminals should be sent to a reformatory prison which will be operated privately and as a profit making institution. It can be a factory, a farm, a fertilizer manufacturing plant, etc. They will work to support themselves, will be paid a salary that they can save until later, but more importantly, they shall receive psychological counseling, self improvement counseling and be trained for different skills. Children criminals should be sent to a children's reformatory school. There they will finish school, practice lots of sports and receive skills training.

Health - Hospitals should be private. Children, until the age of 21, people older than 65 or incapacitated should receive excellent free health care and hospitalization. Hospitals should also offer several plans for group health care for working adults. Doctors should be trained to prescribe more homeopathic and herbal medicines.

Fuel - Rio Grande do Sul does not have petroleum or natural gas. So, we will have to develop other sources of fuel. We will transform our cars, buses, trucks, tractors and other machines to run on methane gas. Anyone who has a few animals or any waste will be encouraged to produce methane gas and fertilizer. We should also use the wind and sunlight to produce electricity and heat. Transportation should be private and reliable. Roads should be private and kept in excellent condition.

Ecology and Environment - We will recycle everything and make a profit of it. Garbage collection, clean-up of cities, parks and sewer systems should be operated by private fertilizer industries. By its fifth anniversary Pais Modelo should have cleaned all of its rivers and recycled 100% of its waste.

Communications &TV - All sorts of communication should be private and of excellent quality.

Forget about TV Globo and its countless soap operas.

We will have interesting, informative and entertaining programs to keep the children at home after school. We should also have question and answer programs for general audience, interesting plays, films, and good local news. We will skip the violence!

Finances - I wish that I could suggest that there will be no taxes in Pais Modelo. But, we want good free education for our children. We want good health care for all, and we want security. Everyone should pay for it, as everyone will want the services.

However, the money comes from the

people, so it will be administered privately by the people. The popular treasury will collect the money and make the payments. We will also assume and pay the debt of Rio Grande do Sul. The politicians who are borrowing now should volunteer to pay the most. The taxes should be figured on earnings, property, and superfluous items like jewelry, alcohol and tobacco products, and luxury cars - never on food and clothing. Anyone who wants should be able to start an honest business which shall be tax free for two years. Participation of profits by employees should be encouraged. All banks should be private and very efficient. We will need a currency. Shall we call it "Cruzeiro do Sul"?

Electricity - All the electric companies in Pais Modelo should be private and offer reliable services.

Minerals - Minerals should be explored privately with due respect for the environment.

Work Ethics - The majority of products "made in Brazil" are of very

poor quality. Gauchos, we must train ourselves to be an honest people, to understand that it is honorable to work. Our products should be good enough to compete in the world market.

Population Growth - We will encourage people to have only the children that they can love, feed, and educate properly. Couples or women should receive birth control counseling at the local clinics. If they are very poor, the birth control means they choose should be available free.

Constitution - Our constitution should have no more than 25 articles, written in plain language. Brazil's constitution, if Jam correct, has more than 2000 articles.

I once read a sentence which applies very well to the Brazilian people. "Everybody said that something should be done. Nobody did anything and everybody got mad." The Brazilian people always say, "The government should do it." - or - "The government didn't do it." It is their -1 biggest complaint. Well, we will not have government anymore, so we should do it by ourselves if we want something done. If we don't do anything, it is our fault. Shame on us! •

Atrocities have become so common that we lack sufficient time to contemplate them all: Carandiru (penitentiary in Sao Paulo), Candelaria (church in Rio), Haximu (Indian village in the Amazon), Vigario Geral (Rio shanty town). The geography of violence is not surprising . Surprising is the daily occurrence of crime, our increased familiarity with massacres, the monotony of the macabre details that, little by little, anesthetize our sensibility.

It's a tragic vaudeville in which the worst aspect is not the succession of blood but the oblivion of previous blood shed and the resignation that only protests. We cannot forget the State's role as the villain commiting past crimes whom no one can stop from committing the next crime.

We've reahed the uncomfortable conclusion that we, society and state, have lost our way. The police on one side, the criminals on the other, are two halves of the same problem: the bankruptcy of moral, political and social values. In the collective save-yourself-if-you-can ethic, we see the collectivism working between governor and ministers: if one leaves, the other resigns; if Mr. So-and-So is fired, Such-and-Such jumps on the opposition's wagon. That would be, let's say, the lightest picture of collectivism.

In a darker version, gold miners kill Indians, and police avenge the death of policemen linked to drug traffickers. And those versions also acquire a specific moral code, they create the law itself on behalf of an ethics that is the same for everybody: a tooth for a tooth.

The thin veneer of civilization that covers the so-called rational animal is easily ruptured, and the beast emerges, invoking the right of the strongest, the strongest of the moment.

That's what happened when drug traffickers killed four military policemen in Vigario Geral, who maybe were not on service at that time. There are clues indicating that they were going to receive their share in the profits of the drug deal. As frequently happens when it's time to allot the loot, the quarrel was solved by the fittest of the occasion: the traffickers.

Hours afterwards, the corporation, including good and bad guys from the Military Police, avenged their murdered colleagues in a showing of the most basic ignorance. It's possible that among the murdered in Vigario Geral there were one or two responsible for the death of the policemen. The rest were innocent victims, statistics to cause panic. What happened merely created the setting for the next retaliation.

Society doesn't even have to ask anything from government: the government itself is the first one to promise investigations and punishments that do not investigate anything and even less likely to punish, because the new crime is conceived at the exact moment the old one has been consummated. In this chain of ignominy nobody goes to jail. All seek to take justice into their own hands, and the government worries about international public opinion and what The New York Times might say.

It has become a common place statement that the State is bankrupt. Thanks to that, society transfers blame to the structure it has created itself. A Greek tragedy concludes, "we're all guilty", but, evidently, some are more guilty than others.

Amid the rising violence inundating the country, it's never too late to mention that the inflation to which we've grown accustomed to, with which we live (despite what the Finance minister says), is a form of violence too. With the collapse of the material values, there's little energy or will left for us to think about moral values. Nothing has a fixed value, not even life. At the end of the month, everything goes up 30%. Even the number of the massacred.

Peles, Rivelinos, and Garrinchas may be history. Thanks to them it was easier for Brazil to win the World Cup in '58,' 62 and '70. These magicians left an indelible mark in the fields. The violent man turns into a soft spoken gentleman when the game ends. He loves flowers, likes the smell of the soil, has an ecological soul, and hates racism. Although he has played on Italian soccer teams from Florence, Pescara, and Piza, and is about to start a new life in Stuttgart, Germany, Dunga keeps his heart in Ipartema: not the one in Rio, but the neighborhood in Porto Alegre (capital of Rio Grande do Sul) where he has his ranch and home.

Born Carlos Caetano Bledorn Verri, Dunga is a mix of many cultures and countries, including Brazil, Germany and Italy. As a child growing up in Ijui, state of Rio Grande do Sul, his hero was Falcao, a player of Porto Alegre's Internacional, a soccer team. Intent on following in his idol's steps, he moved to Porto Alegre, dreaming about being a new Falcdo. Incapable of duplicating Falcdo's game, he changed his focus to wrestling the ball from the opponent. Modern soccer history, he says, is not made only by exceptional magician feet but also the feet of those who steal the ball from the adversary. At 29, he thinks his retirement as a world class soccer player is very close.

On his ranch, amid his milk cows, horses, and sheep, he dreams about the day he will build a sport complex to train poor kids. "I want to give something back from all I have received," he says. When Italian soccer players decided to strike two years ago, he opposed the idea in no uncertain terms. "If it were for better work conditions, I would be in favor," he declared. "But it was a discriminatory movement against the foreign players. They were simultaneously trying to defend the integration of the European community and the exclusion of those outside the community.

I was against it, and was very vocal in my opposition."

Head coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has no complaints and only praise: "I would love to have many Dungas on my team. He's a player with a soul, a character, who fights for victory with dignity. He is a great player." • 21

ECONOMY

Growing again After a disastrous year in which the economy shrank, optimism is back in Brazil. Some forescasts even point to a two digit growth index for 1993.

FIESP, the Sao Paulo Federation of Industries, is forecasting a growth index of 10% for 1993. The expectation is based on June numbers that have shown a 15% increase in the index compared to June of last year. "Thanks to the strong growth of the first half, even if the index stays in the 15% range, we will be able to. get the 10% anticipated," says Franz Reimer, director of Economy for FIESP. When compared to 1992, real sales showed a gain of 8.3%.

"This growth has been happening in the consumer sector with items such as automobiles and electro-electronics," explains Reiner. The report justifies the index, pointing also to the increase in demand for goods by merchants. According to FIESP, the only sector where sales didn't expand was the chemical one.

Abram Szajman, president of sao Paulo's Commerce Federation, agrees with FIESP's assessment. "The industry grew, in part, with the recuperation of stocks," he said. He doesn't believe, however, that an expansion will occur in the domestic market. Szajman adds, "Unfortunately we don't have good news to report, because commerce hasn't kept pace with industry." The Federation's statistics show a fall of 5% in the first semester. Last year the drop for the same period was 12.5%.

FIESP's data show a 0.1% increase in the level of employment in June when compared with the previous month. The average real salary fell by the same 0.1% in June. The 12.5% fall in employment in 1992 represents less a lack of work than an increase in efficiency, due to the use of computers and better management techniques. Another positive sign for the Paulista economy is the drop in the number of bankruptcies.

The Brazilian economy as a whole should generate $14 billion more than last year in products, according to IPEA, the Finance Ministry's Institute for Applied Economic Research.

That organization estimates that Brazil will have an increase of 3.5% in its GNP this year. In 1992, there was a reduction of 0.9% in the Gross National Product.

This increase should be led by industry, which is expected to produce 4.7% more this year. The transformation sector should usher in better times. Agriculture and cattle growing are supposed to increase by 3%, while the service sector is expected to expand 2.6%.

At least one group, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), headquartered in Paris, doesn't believe Brazil will grow in 1993. In justifying their doubts they point primarily to the lack of consistency of the Brazilian economic policy.

However, Marco Guarita, from the National Confederation of the Industry (CNI), is very optimistic.

He believes that only a strong boost in inflation (it's already around 30% a month) can stop our economic growth.

This expansion would be possible thanks to the construction sector, as well as the automobile, agriculture and export industries. Our exports in the first half of 1993 grew by 8.8% compared to last year's same period, reaching $18.9 billion.

The auto industry has never been so prolific. Brazil produced 631,204 vehicles in the first six months of 1993, breaking the 1986 record, when 564,000 were manufactured. The domestic sale of autos was the second biggest in history with 471,394 units sold, very close to the 488,000 sold in 1979.

This expansion reflects a change in government policy that allowed agreements between government and workers and employers, reducing taxes and profit margins, with its direct reflection in consumers' prices.

The Anfavea, National Association of the Automotive Vehicles Manufacturers, is forecasting production of more than 1,200,000 vehicles this year. As for agriculture, the harvest should be 400,000 tons (0.4%) bigger than last year, according to Conab, National Company of Supply.

The crop shall reach 68.7 million tons, being inferior only to the 88/89 harvest when more than 71 million of tons were reaped. Soya, corn and wheat are the main crops leading this near-record year. • NEWS from BRAZIL - OCTOBER 1993

Sigmund Freud has called dreams the royal road to the unconscious. This Brazilian artist is capable of giving life to these reveries.

S IRGIO DO LAGO Oraimah, the god of the jungles, returns to the desolated planet earth after one hundred thousand years of destruction. Oraimah begins reforesting the planet and is eventually confronted by his brother and ruler of the deserts, Draimah. These two gods are just part of the mythological world created by Brazilian artist Clerio DeMoraes through his surrealistic paintings. A journey through himself, which results in an explosion of creativity, with an amazing variety of nuances and meanings.

Besides the mythological world which is constantly fed by his fertile imagination, Clerio is also capable of exploring his own origin. His nudes, carnival scenes and enigmatic architectural structures exude the spirit of Brazilian culture and folklore.

When I first met Clerio, two years ago, it was easy to get impressed by his energetic talk and extreme pride in his work. He was then showing his art in Venice, California. Clerio was one of the organizer of a show promoted by a network group called Gamut. But not only his talk impressed me. His paintings were colorful, vibrant, instigative, elaborate.

After the show, I was able to know more about his work and himself.

Eventually, we had the opportunity to work together in the documentary Painting the Unconscious, about his creative process and his work as a teacher and assistant art director at the Exceptional Children's Foundation (ECF) - Art Center.

Of Italian and German descent, Clerio is a native of Rio. During his youth, revolutionary movements of music, art and literature became a NEWS from BRAZIL - OCTOBER 1993

significant part of the cultural scene in that city. It was this creative environment and the work of Portinari and Di Cavalcanti which first inspired DeMoraes to paint.

After receiving his certification in Architectural/Interior Design and Drafting from the Brazilian Institute of Fine Arts, the artist worked for eight years as a professional drafter and designer.

During this time, he executed a series of pen and ink renderings of abstract structures and landscapes which defied gravity and conventional usage of perspective. Some of these drawings were selected to participate in an art festival sponsored by the city of Rio de Janeiro. They were later placed at a local government building.

Clerio's love of jazz guitar eventually brought him to the United States where he studied jazz at the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston.

He also studied drawing and art history at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, retaining his strongest impressions from the works of M.C. Escher, Rene Magritte, and Salvador Dali. Upon completing his studies in Boston, DeMoraes moved to Los Angeles and formed a successful Brazilian jazz duo, Samambaia, which performed in Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay area.

In 1988, the artist began to focus on the further development of his career as a painter and has since shown his works in several group exhibitions in the Los Angeles area. In 1990, he was commissioned by acclaimed Brazilian composerpianist Antonio Adolfo to design the cover for his album 'Inv, which was nominated by the Association of Independent Music Recording for best album cover in the jazz category. Clerio also designed the cover for Antonio Adolfo's instructional music video.

During the last five years, the artist participated in many exhibits in the Los Angeles area.

Although he has never had the opportunity to show his work in an individual exhibit, the quality of his art has already been recognized by some critics. The video Painting the Unconscious, about his work, received an award in the 34th Cindy Film and Festival and it's been also included in the archives of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. Clerio is nourished by everything that surrounds him. One of his main sources is his work at the ECF - Art Center. The contact with his "children", as he calls the clients at the Center, gives him at the same time a deep sense of reality and an insight into the mysterious world of the artists with disabilities. At the ECF, Clerio has to know when to treat the clients like students or when to recognize their art as a full and truly artistic expression of their life experience. He's also proud of their works and he's constantly trying to divulge their work in art shows and exhibits.

This daily experience can be easily noticed in Clerio's art. It helps us penetrate into the mythological world he created for himself, a world of constant fight, that recognizes the human frailties inside all of us, but also points to hope and understanding. • 23

Mestre Amen was also the capoeira trainer for Mark DaCascos, the young star of Only the Strong. Joselito Santo, who has lived in the U.S. for the past seven years, teaching during this period the art of capoeira to hundreds of Americans, talked to News from Brazil about the movie and his participation in it. The capoeira Mestre was also the founder of Brasil Brasil Cultural Center and Bale Folclorico do Brasil.

NfB: What are your thoughts about Only the Strong and its contribution to make capoeira known in the U.S.?

Amen: Capoeira has been in the U.S. for about 15 years, I believe. Now, people are beginning to recognize capoeira like any other martial art. Before, few people knew about it. Only the Srong made this knowledge much more widespread. As for the movie, for being the first capoeira film in the U.S., I think it was a good one. I feel it could have been better in certain ways. I tried my best. For me it was good to have that kind of experience. The movie is part of the history of capoeira in this country and I am glad I was involved in it. This is very much the first movie which is one hundred percent about capoeira.

NfB: What was your role in Only the Strong?

Amen: I was the fight choreographer. I was also the lead actor trainer, the trainer for all the kids who were learning capoeira, and I was a consultant too. I did many things for the movie, not only in the fights, but behind the scenes, like the music. For some of the music, I had to sing the songs. I had a lot of different 24

roles.

NfB: Has any other movie used capoeira in a positive way?

Amen: Yeah, there is Quilombo (Carlos Diegues movie from 1984 about Quilombo dos Palmares, a clandestine republic formed in the XVIII century by runaway slaves). It shows some capoeira. There are a few other movies like Rooftops, which had some capoeira. But it was a small part. One of Mel Gibson's movies, I think it was Lethal Weapon, has another small part of capoeira. I was in a movie called The Aggressor, a kick-boxing movie in which I did a little capoeira too.

NfB: What would you like to see in future films dealing with capoeira?

Amen: Well, I think that anyone involved in future films, such as a Mestre or student, has the responsibility to develop the art and respect the art.

I'd like to do more movies. There are even a few offers and I'd like to do them as long as there is a respectful role for capoeira and for me. I'd like to be involved in a respectful way.

NfB: Have you been hearing from people who saw the movie?

Amen: A lot of people have called me. Most of them seem to think that the beginning and the end are the most exciting parts. They also told me they expected me to intervene when the lead actor fights with the bad guy. Everybody keeps saying the same thing. It's so funny, you know. People have said, "I'd wish you have been more in the movie". I think it was nice of them to say that. But I feel that Mark (DaCascos) did a good job. He was a good student and he tried to do his best. I think he did well. I'm very proud of him too.

NfB: Do you have any special projects involving capoeira in the near future?

Amen: Yeah, we're going to have in Los Angeles, on November 6 and 7 a conference on capoeira. We're trying to bring some capoeira masters from Brazil to participate and we'll have a capoeira batizado (baptism) too. The conference will also deal with the religious aspects of capoeira, such as its connection with candomble. We're also trying to invite other African religious groups. The conference will have an open panel that will discuss capoeira and its religious dimension, and its connections with African religions.

NfB: Are there any other thoughts you would like to share?

Amen: Capoeira is a very unique art. I don't want to be selfish and try to open the door for capoeira only for my benefit. Opening the door for capoeira is part of my job. We want to preserve history and that's why we have the Brasil Brasil Cultural Center. We are trying to represent the African-Brazilian history.

People are confused about capoeira. Some say it is only a Brazilian martial art. They forget that if it wasn't for the Africans there would not be capoeira.

This is an African-Brazilian martial art. I think that capoeira is for everybody. But it is important that we remember where it came from and that we respect that history.

Hollywood ghost A Brazilian senator talks about a conspiracy by the American film industry to ruin the national movie market. But at least one renowned filmmaker says Brazilians are their own worst enemies.

Imagine a country with 50 million televisions and 11 million VCR's. And imagine that in such a place the million hours worth of images are devoured each year.

The population is around 150 million, and they spend good part of their lives glued to the television. Evaluate, too, if you will oh incredulous reader, what the daily, concentrated invasion of sounds and images created elsewhere means to the economy and culture of this country. Images created by people and enterprises that, for good or ill, know nothing of the glory and the misery of being a Brazilian. Did someone mention Brazil?

Yes..., and how! Senator Marcio Lacerda gave a talk not long ago to his colleagues about his situation in Brazil.

The ample facts were presented in a short, NEWS from BRAZIL - OCTOBER 1993

but passionate speech, in which the senator defended the industry which had been dealt a terrible blow by the former Collor government: Brazilian cinema. Lacerda hasn't limited himself to the defense of national cinema, and the Minister of Culture, Antonio Houaiss, who he considers to be a victim of Collor's "sordid campaign". He also attacks American movie producers, well-organized under the banner of the Motion Pictures Association, and represented in Brazil by someone very well-known to us: Harry Stone.

Influential collaborators - Placed in the major capital cities of the world, representatives of the Motion Pictures Association work not just to assure the already solid position of North American movie production, but also to strengthen it, trying to block any measures that could possibly jeopardize the interests of the U.S. movie industry," says Senator Lacerda in his manifesto. Of course, the senator is aware that any kind of invasion can be maintained without the cooperation, either active or passive, of those being invaded. He fires: "Mr. Harry Stone was able to very skillfully articulate a thorough plan made up of various influences, Brazilian distributors, theater owners, elected officials, and in a certain way, the press and other communication media.

No one is spared, not even you, esteemed reader.

"With generous funds at their disposal, the Motion Pictures Association, via the concession of small favors and social amenities, has managed to keep a circle of influential collaborators, inclined to assist in the promotion and protection of North American cinema in Brazil," continues Lacerda.

It's all quite confusing, right? Wrong! The senator has even more concrete facts. He accuses representatives of the American interests of having hampered the now-defunct companies, Concine and Embrafilme, in becoming viable production and distribution companies," through over 300 legal cases and "not always too subtle" political pressure. It is war, as another Brazilian, producer Luiz Carlos Barreto, also recognizes. Concine and Embrafilme are now out of the picture. At present, attention is focused on the future - which at the moment is looking promising-and the expected workings of the Lei do Audiovisual (Audiovisual Law).

Spiteful memos... Barreto doesn't entirely agree with Senator Lacerda's vehemence. He recognizes the existence of lobbies which defend the American industry, but he also imagineS that these foreigners are just doing their jobs.

"It's our responsibility to do ours," rationalize the producer.

Barreto, who also is president of the Brazilian Association of Cinematographic Producers, under27

stands that American and Brazilian interests could find common ground on some issues, such as the one to combat fraud and the pirating of films and videotapes. At any rate, what appears to irritate the Americans is not only the Brazilian, but also the French cinematographers' desire to establish screening quotas in theaters.

The Audiovisual Law would be one target of these people, capable of provoking legal battles like the one, in the words of Senator Lacerda, which figured in the "sordid campaign" against Houaiss.

Barreto speaks of "spiteful memos and false reports" with which certain member of the press, either poorly informed or intentionally biased, had wasted time.

The text of the new law anticipates that 70% of the taxes owed by foreign distributors to the Brazilian government would be invested in the production or co-production of Brazilian films. It also establishes screening quotas for videos.

All the uproar and alarm, resulting in "low blows" and other dastardly deeds, aren't even addressing these particulars in the law.

Barreto agrees with the senator by admitting, "We are naive and we'll basically sell out for one gulp of champagne. We can be bought cheap," he adds. He says that journalists, local judges, bureaucrats; they call become ecstatic over invitations to private screenings and other such pleasantries.

Surrealism - Vladimir Carvalho, filmmaker from the state of Paraiba who now resides in Brasilia, author of the highly praised work, Conterraneos Velhos de Guerra, remembers some of the surrealistic problems of making films in Brazil. For one thing, the competition is unfair.

"While the unfinished films here are heavily assessed for surcharges (taxed), copies of films, all ready to go, arrive in the country tariff-free," he complains.

Carvalho goes on to touch on the subject of television: "During the 70's, we tried very hard to introduce our films onto television," he says. The large networks, Globo among them, still feel threatened when "tele-screening" quotas are mentioned. It is hoped that with the Audiovisual Law, SBT, Manchete, Bandeirantes, etc., will be encouraged to produce films. Recently arrived home from a tour of Brazilian cities where his film was screened, Carvalho gave an example of one of the difficulties, which is enough to make even the proponents of internationalism admit that this all isn't just the doing of the Americans. It's the following: since people aren't in the habit of going to see films in Portuguese, some theater operators have been careless in taking proper care of their sound systems. "Foreign film are read, not heard," notes Carvalho.

Very well. Con terrdneos (fellow citizens), a film made up in large part by spoken statements made by different people (it attempts to reconstruct an account of the 28

workers who built Brasilia) was well received in theaters with good sound. But it can't be entirely enjoyed by viewers in poorly equipped places. The film has "good" sound. "I invested in this," says Carvalho. So, the "conspiracy" of negative factors working against Brazilian cinema includes inattention to sound systems on the part of theater owners.

The filmmaker points to a real conspiracy involving distributors and exhibitors, united in the goal of boycotting Brazilian products (films). Barreto agrees by noting that in the 70's, "we were able to hold 50% of the market, surpassing the market of quota around 30% then in effect."

It was the time of Gaijin, Dona Flor, Memorias do Carcere, Xica da Silva, Ljkio FIcivio, box-office hits. And the list goes on (not necessarily in chronological order): Guerra Conjugal, Macunalma, TodaNudez Sera Castigada, Tenda dos Milagres...

"When there is again a product, there won't be barriers," says Barreto.

AIDS

A star is dying Sandra Brea has shocked Brazil with the revelation that she has AIDS. She had been the ultimate sex symbol of the 70s. The tragedy is being used to educate women about the dangers of the deadly virus.

In 1973, she came from nowhere to become the overnight success of the first Brazilian novela in color, 0 Bern Amado (The Well Beloved). Soon after she would start her own program, Sandra & Miele, on prime time at Globo, then as now Brazil's dominant TV network.

She was all over, in movies, in musicals, on magazine covers, giving interviews about nothing and everything. Nothing Sandra Brea did seemed to go wrong. She was called the sex symbol of the 70s, and went through a series of three failed marriages, one to famous photographer Antonio Guerreiro whose previous muse had been actress Sonia Braga.

Then she disappeared for most of the 80s. Her talent never caught up with her fame and soon there were no more roles for her louquinha (little crazy) style. A case of pneumonia in 82, her wedding in 83 with Garicho businessman Arthur Guarisse, and a little car accident in 1985 when she hit a taxi in Ipartema were some of the rare occasions on which her name came under the spotlight.

Suddenly, without getting any special acting role, she is back in the magazine covers. In NEWS from BRAZIL - OCTOBER 1993

one week in August she was simultaneously in Veja and Manchete, two of the most-read publications in Brazil. At 41, she is flashing the same smile that made her famous, and in Manchete she is even revealing a bare breast through an open jacket. The reason for this suddenretum? Sandra Brea has announced that she has AIDS. The news was broken first by Rio newspaper 0 Globo, and immediately the whole country started to talk about it. Some other Brazilian personalities had gone public regarding their infection with the HIV virus, but she was the first famous woman to admit it. Sandra learned about the disease in March when seeking treatment for a urinary infection. Her doctor noticed a sudden drop of antibodies, and his suspicion of AIDS was soon confirmed.

For four months she carried her secret, revealing it only to some very close friends. When she decided to Ao public, in her old louquinha style, she wasn t very coherent, saying things like, "The virus is life. AIDS is a disease of union and not of death." She also attributed her contamination to a blood transfusion that apparently never happened. Some days later she admitted that she could have been infected through sexual intercourse.

The inquiring minds of Brazilian journalism combed through her life, trying to pin down the behavior that had made her sick. Some asked her to be more candid, and others accused her of trying to promote herself through the disease.

Mule some celebrities have had to show a medical test in the past to prove they were not HIV positive, Brea was forced to present journalists with the results of her tests to prove she was contaminated.

Among the publications, Veja was particularly incisive, describing the house of the actress in Jacarepagua, Rio, as a "dark and cold construction, with the walls and ceiling attacked by humidity. The worn furniture and tattered sofas complete the setting." The magazine told about her romance with hairdresser Silvinho, who died of AIDS, concluding: "This doesn't mean that Sandra Brea caught the virus from the hairdresser, a possibility as improbable as a blood transfusion in the middle of the street."

Sandra was never shy about her sexual prowess. Talking to Manchete in 1977 she said, "In regard to sex, I accept all credit cards. Tribal, group, hetero, uni, I even accept the correct sex, the man/woman."

Last August in another conversation with the magazine, the actress confided that what she • really enjoys is a "big boy, pretty and with lots of muscle. The young people have my pace. I'm restless and don't acknowledge obstacles. When I want something„ I fight for it."

She even used the occasion to give some advice: "Write it there. Young people should be very careful, they should always wear a condom and not inject garbage in their bodies. Thank God, I don t use drugs. I'm from (singer) Nara Leao's generation. What I really enjoy is liquor, wine, vodka, and I'm not abdicating from these pleasures. I want to celebrate life, not death."

Mario Maciel, her doctor, is using relaxation to contain a little of Sandra's restlessness. He isn't very happy with the results, however. "I would like at least to see her smoking less and eating at regular hours," he complains.

MUSIC The coolest guy in MPB (Brazilian Popular Music) nowadays is a singercomposer-guitarist born in Rio in 1940 who has spent his life in the tepid warmth of a mediocre success, pleasing enough to continue performing in occasional shows but not successful enough to frequent the Pantheon of some of his contemporaries such as Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso.

Born Jorge Duilio Ben Zabella Lima de Menezes, the singer started his career in the Bossa Nova years as Jorge Ben, changed his name in 1987 to Jorge Benjor (he got tired of being confused with guitarist George Benson), and has lately been signing simply Ben Jor. It has been hard to pin down Ben Jor musically, since he started singing in 1963 at the legendary bohemian spot in Copacabana known as Beco das Garrafas (Bottles' Dead End Street).

Bossa Nova people whom he emulated at the beginning (Joao Gilberto was a hero he was never able to copy as he would have liked) used to call him a sambista. The sambistas themselves, however, didn't consider him one of them, classifying the composer as a jazz-man.

Even unclassified, he was able to compose about 700 songs, some of which became MPB classics. His first break came with Mas, Que Nada (Oh, Come On), a samba and bossa nova mix that would become a big success in the U.S. after being recorded in 1966 by Sergio Mendes and Brazil '66. Mendes has also recorded Pals Tropical (Tropical Country) and Por Causa de Voce (Because of You). Jose Feliciano, Herb Alpert, and Dizzy Gillespie have also recorded Ben Jar's songs.

Unlike Gil and Caetano, who have some young fans while keeping a core of older admirers, Ben Jor has been filling up concert halls with a crowd mostly composed of teenagers. Still faithful to the same sound from the 60s that some call" rhythm and samba", the composer is a favorite among those youngsters whose other musical heroes are Madonna and the Tifas. The void left by the collapse of most of the Brazilian rock bands created in the 80s has also contributed to the sudden mega-stardom of Jorge Benjor.

only the biggest showbiz names as Simone or Daniela Mercury are able to pack to capacity. It happened recently at the Imperator, in Rio, where for four consecutive nights he brought 5,000 people to the house, while 2,000 others screamed outside, trying to get a ticket for the sold out show. The same thing has been occurring wherever he goes, be it at the Olympia or Reggae Night in Sao Paulo, or in any of the six states he is touring right now, before going to Paris and New York in November.

Radio stations, mainly those with a young audience, are playing his songs like crazy. At Radio Transamerica, a national network with one of the largest audiences in Sao Paulo, cuts like Taj Mahal and W/Brasil have been among the ten most requested songs for several weeks. The singer was never a favorite among middle-class teens until now. He has appealed in the past to a less sophisticated public.

The singer-composer himself seems at a loss to explain this sudden popularity. He has been accused of being repetitive and of being a poor lyricist. His strength has been the masterly mix of African, American and Brazilian sounds. His next record, to be released at the end of the year, will bring all of this together once more. It will have samba, blues, maracatu, funk, gongo, and

afoxe.

He shouldn't be worried. His last two CDs - Benjor ao Vivo and Mestres da MPB dedicated to him - were a big success even though they didn't contain any new songs. According to Warner, his recording company, Mestres should sell 150,000 copies by the end of the year, turning Ben Jor into a best-seller recording artist for the first time.

He has never been politically controversial. While some composers such as Chico Buarque, Gil and Caetano had to leave the country when the dictatorship tightened the screws starting in 1968, his kind of music was never seen as any threat. One of NEWS from BRAZIL - OCTOBER 1993

his songs was once involved in some controversy, over Beleza Tropical, a compilation of Brazilian music. His cut alleged 'lasciviousness".
