We are going to continue bring-

ing them all: the bad and the good, the explosion and the breeze, crooks and heroes, the painful, the painless, the joyful, the joyless and all in between, the passion, the laugh, the lies, the light and the dirty.

By the way, we miss some more acid letters. If we haven't published less generous notes in our letter section lately is for total lack of them.

When they disappear, as it has happened now, it seems as though we

are doing something wrong, not pressing the right buttons on our readers imagination and sensibility.

First kisser President Itamar Franco, single and unattached, is getting a reputation as a suave Don Juan.

Brasilia's rumor mill has seen him romancing more than one beauty, generally younger and famous women. One scene, however, was seen on prime time TV. Veteran actress Norma Bengell, 58, planted a kiss on the mouth of the first bachelor (picture below) causing an amusing uproar. Two weeks afterwards, when they met again in front of the cameras, Itamar warned: "Look what you're gonna do." "They want us to kiss again," answered mischievously the actress, before giving Itamar two little kisses one on each side of his face. Far from the screen for a long time due to the Brazilian film crisis, naughty La Bengell hasn't forgotten how to play a good scene.

Mr. & Ms. President The little girl being held by president Bill Clinton has a messaF on her T-shirt: "Future president of the United States' . If the wish of the gift giver is fulfilled Charlotte Emily Lessa, 4 month old, will probably be the first Brazilian to reign over the White House. Daughter of Brazilian journalists Claudio and Aurea Lessa, Charlotte is a genuine Brazilian. Being born in the United States, she is a pure-bred American, turning her a natural candidate to the American presidency. The meeting occurred during a barbecue offered by the president to the White House press in a effort to mend some fences and build some bridges. Like hundreds of other babies held on the campaign trail, Charlotte gave Clinton another chance to boost his poor rates. Politics, demagoguery? "I also thought so, at first," said Claudio, but I changed my mind when the president in a speech the next day talked about what happened as the most touching episode of the previous day."

Cinderella town Since childhood, American writer Susan Sontag has been romancing Rio prudishly at a distance, through pictures and mail. Now at 60, she finally has had the chance to meet her beloved, at the same time she promoted her last book, released in Brazil as 0 Amante do Vulcdo. She wasn't disappointed while touring the customary attractions such as Christ, the Redeemer, and the Tijuca forest. But it was love at first smog when she arrived in Sao Paulo. "I never thought I would fall in love with that city," she said, apparently with an expression of remorse. Sontag is so in love with Sampa that she is moving there, where she intends to spend months at a time relaxing and writing. It was like betraying a spouse with an uglier and unatractive brother. Or maybe she was able to find a pretty face under the soot.

Collor de Mello had a plan to close Congress and assume dictatorial powers a la Fujimori of Peru. This information is being confirmed by a former close friend and political ally of the expresident. According to Cleto Falcdo, federal deputy for Alagoas, the white coup would have started with a federal intervention on Globo network, virtually a TV monopoly in Brazil. After that, the network would be used to demoralize Congress. The ex-president, says Falcdo, got the idea of intervention soon after the airing of a humorous show called TV Pirata, when he was called Fernandinho and shown in prisoner's clothes. The plan never went past its initial stage.

Collor was busy plotting billionary get-rich-quick schemes at first and sticky trying to get from under an avalanche of mud soon after.

Untimely picture The instant world celebrity that a picture in Time magazine can confer didn't please Carioca Jacqueline F. da Silva. She is in fact so incensed that she decided to sue the publication. On its June 21 issue, in a cover article about world prostitution, Time showed a picture of the Brazilian with the caption: "In the port city of Recife, Jacqueline, 18, wanders by a waterfront bar looking for customers." Married, and expecting a child any day now, Jacqueline says that prostitution and drugs are a turned page in her life. The picture was taken in October. The fight against giant Time is a long shot. But Jacqueline is determined to get some kind of reparation. "I am a mother now," she said. "I didn't want my child to know about my past. The magazine didn't have this right."

By its sheer numbers, Brazil is an impressive colossus: 160 million inhabitants, an area of 3,286,470 sq. miles (larger than the continental United States) the eighth largest economy in the world. Despite the astronomical inflation and bad times, the country should grow 3.5% this year. We have it all to join the world's elite. Just you wait.

After more than ten years of stagnated economy, Brazil seems to be finally pulling out of it. If projections for the future hold up, the future might really look rosy indeed. The best part of it, however, is that Brazilians from all walks of life - particularly those from the south and of the younger generation - seem to have a positive outlook for their country and their own future.

Recently, Veja, the most respected Brazilian weekly magazine, carried out a survey amongst 600 Brazilian children between the ages of 11 and 14. Most of the participants were in either 5th or 6th grade, and the children lived in the cities of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Curitiba and Recife.

The results were surprising: most of the children basically had the same aspirations and desires as older Brazilian youths and young adults. The children indicated that the most important things to them (in order of preference) were as follows: to get married and have children (179); to advance their nation (124); to leave the country (48); to earn money (42) and to pursue a professional career (35). Noteworthy is the fact that the desire the earn money was mentioned 7

as more important than learning a skill or profession.

In a country with runaway inflation, many children can't but see the day in which they're able to help out their parents financially. The survey was subsequently qualified and commented upon by a panel of teachers, psychologists, psychiatrists and educational specialists.

Samir Meserani, an educator, stated: "The family seems to be one of the most important social units - if not the only one - to these young people."

Helping their nation also rated among the ten most mentioned subjects as well. "These children are expressing an urgency to grow and mature, in order to help and alleviate national problems", states Ada Pellegrini, a psychoanalyst for the Center for Family Investigations, a unit of the Social Services Program of the Sao Paulo Catholic University (PUC).

It was also striking to notice that the children - most of whom were born in the late 70's or early 80's - did not show any trace of dissatisfaction; this in spite of the fact that most have been raised during a period of constant hyper inflation, and financial and political crisis within Brazil.

Among the career goals most often mentioned by the children (in order of preference) were: Doctor, Lawyer, Engineer, Teacher, Secretary, Soccer Star, Veterinarian, Dentist, Architect and Journalist.

As to their spontaneous motivations, they cited their need to help their parents, preserve nature, gain fame/ fortune, improve the way politics is carried out and a need for a more just society.

Their fears and concerns were also in tune with those of most adults: violence and its social impact, misery, pollution, corruption, drugs, street children, unemployment, inflation and robberies are their major concerns as well. This cluster of complaints has already been labeled as the "Bleak Future Syndrome" by many a mental health professional in Brazil. However, the general consensus - in spite of it all - is that the children questioned in this survey feel that their future is better than their present. And that bodes well for Brazil.

STILL STANDING - Two years ago Veja had made a similar survey, that time among 200 typical Brazilians from all walks of life.

Hyper inflation had already taken hold of Brazil. More than two hundred people, from known singers Caetano Veloso and Tom Jobim all the way to unknown citizens on the streets, passing by respected 98 year-old Mineiro attorney Sobral Pinto, gave their own visions of the future for Brazil. The results then - as now - were overwhelmingly positive. That is, that Brazil (and by extension Brazilians) do have the zest necessary to overcome whatever crises that might befall them.

Brazil, after numerous problems during the last decade, has firmly stood ground and kept going. A population that has withstood an inflation rate at times reaching 80% per month, changed currencies 3 times in the last 6 years, and had 80% of its citizens' savings and investments taken over by the government, yet in spite of it all still endures without any sort of revolt, massive repression or widespread social backlash, is indeed special and rare.

And Brazil is just that. For the typical Brazilian, the only sure thing certain is that the country does have jeito (a way out), that most Brazilians are sick and tired of miracle or "shock" types of economic solutions to the crisis, and that they must try to preserve - and improve - the legal status quo, but simultaneously improve the country's democratic institutionality.

SIGN OF THE TIMES - The picture is already starting to look rosy in Brazil's retail business. Sales have always been the first place where the economy lets you know if it is making a comeback, and Brazil is no exception. After disastrous back-to-back years of low sales in a hyper inflated economy, retail stores and chains are finally seeing the 8

light within - although still not the end of - the tunnel. Still somewhat slowly, many factories and stores are now hiring personnel and increasing productivity due to a modest but sustained increase in work orders from their clientele.

An example can be seen in the state of Rio de Janeiro; according to numbers recently released by FIRJAN (Portuguese acronym for the Federation of Industries for the State of Rio de Janeiro), between the months of April and May of this year, almost 4,800 new jobs had been opened in that state alone, most in retail production related jobs.

Sales increased 1.5% from January to May of 1993, in relation to the same period for the previous year.

Retailers are selling much more and requesting more work from the factories. According to Augusto Franco, who directs FIRJAN's Investigative and Research Department, it was expected that the two year-old recession would end. "With lower demand for manufactured goods, production had gone down, and people were laid off to reduce costs. That picture has just started to change," says Franco.

And other things have changed as well. Many firms are suddenly realizing that their employer/ employee relationship has to turn into a partnership deal. Through bonuses and subsidies they have been able to gain the loyalty and respect of their workers, but more so, they are meeting their quotas as well. Optimism regarding Brazil's future is now coming from within.

Edmund° Klotz, who is the president of the Brazilian Association of Food Industries (ABIA) states: "We (Brazil) are feasible. We have a tremendous growth potential, and have made many inroads towards solving our problems. We just have to make the proper adjustments; among those would be controlling the government's budget and carrying out fiscal reforms. Countries with far less economic potential than ours - such as China, Bolivia and Chile - have been able to solve their basic problems. There is no reason why Brazil should not be able to achieve this goal as well."

An example of resurgence within Brazil's industrial sector has been IVB (Instituto Vital Brasil), Brazil's second largest publicly owned production laboratory. An institution of regional and even international renown, IVB recently celebrated 74 years of active online production. However, last year it almost went into a black hole, as production plummeted, basically due to its commitment to one sole client.

This past June, the new board of directors reversed the company's direction, and returned to an old principle and basic rule within market economy: diversify your clientele. They have reduced their dependence on their main client, Central de Medicamentos (CEME), and they now distribute their line of over 42 different medications to over 100 new clients.

In fact, their rate of production has been so good that they expect to be exporting certain categories of their vaccines by 1995. The Brazilian Ministry of Health - which had been planning an expansion for the last 5 years - has finally given its approval to the proposed expansion, and IVB has thus performed its own jeitinho.

EXCELLENCE CONFIRMED - Another confirmation of Brazil's potential has been the acclaim it has received for the quality of many products and procedures followed by Brazilian firms in their production lines. During the last two years alone, 53 firms have obtained their certificates of excellence by ISO (International Organization for Standardization) based in Vienna, Austria. Fifteen have been audited and are also expected to receive theirs shortly. And 33 more have received their certificates from the Brazilian government for their overall quality in products or procedures.

accepted within the world's 25 most advanced nations. The firms themselves request to be inspected and audited, and once the process is completed, they have to keep up their excellence, since any lowering of their standards would disqualify them, and that means going back to ground zero.

The potential quality of Brazilian products in first world markets is a chief reason for optimism within the public and private sectors as well, since exports mean hard currency and leveling of the trade imbalance for the nation.

The guiding principle, according to Herick Garainha Jiinior of Bureau Veritas in Sao Paulo, is: "Write what you do, and do what you've written."

REASON FOR OPTIMISM? - Brazilians are disheartened by the present.

However, they've confirmed that they are optimistic about their future.

In fact, 78% of all Brazilians have stated it clearly: "Temos jeito!".

According to a survey carried out by Data Folha, the most positive group is composed of people who have a higher education (81%), and those whose salaries are equivalent to ten minimum salaries ($ 600) or more.

Delfim Netto, Finance Minister during the years of the so-called economic miracle, and a congressman now, says: "We will make it." "We have everything needed for new growth, and some added advantages", states Roberto Campos, another economist.

These two experts, together with Aloizio Mercadante, have studied the major problems which have bottlenecked the Brazilian 10

economy. The worst is - by far - inflation; however, education comes in a very close second.

Without education, improvements in productivity and scientific advancement cannot be guaranteed to the nation.

On the other hand, Brazil has numerous and tremendous advantages: contrary to many European countries, they have no overt religious or racial conflicts, nor any regional conflicts with its neighbors.

The food and biotechnology industries are very strategic strong points and Brazil has in many ways reduced over-all pollution faster than many first world

LTT Dear Editor: I was planning to write to you because I wanted to correspond with people of other cultures and tell them about my beautiful Rio Grande do Sul. Now I have three reason to do so.

I would still like to get in touch with people interested in (south Brazil) Rio Grande do Sul. I also want to thank you for writing so nicely about my state (News from Brazil - July '93). For 25 years I have complained that nobody does so.

Now I am happy that you did.

Thank you!

Besides I would like to comment upon the pro-separatist movement. I was born just 16 km. from the place where Bento Goncalves da Silva was born. We're both from Triunfo, RS. Even if we are not related I feel that a little of his blood runs through my veins.

He is my great hero.

I am only sorry that we are still part of a country to which we do not relate very well. I have always looked at Uruguay and Argentina, two small countries doing much better than a big messy Brazil, and envied them.

In my heart Jam a Gaiicha and a separatist! However, I do not agree with some of Mr. Marx's ideas. I dislike any prejudice against race, religion or customs. Now I will organize my ideas of separation and work on them.

Ha muitos anos havia no Rio de Janeiro urn boticario, em cujo estabelecimento se reuniam todas as noites - das sete as dez - uns individuos que nao faziam outra coisa sena° discutir sobre politica.

Uma noite apareceu na roda, levado por urn dos mais velhos freqUentadores da botica, certo oficial argentino, revolucionario, que fora deportado da sua terra, e andava comendo o negro pao do exilio. no Freres Provencaux.

Desde o instante em que esse elemento exotic° apareceu na botica, cessou completamente a cordura que havia naquelas confabulacdes tranqUilas e burguesas.

0 argentino a propesito de tudo deprimia os homens e as coisas do pals que o agasalhava, poupando, nas suas mpertmencias i invectivas, apenas a nossa naturaleza.

A roda era pacata; nenhum dos presentes tomava a peito, corn o indispensavel ardor, a defesa, alias facflima, danossa terra; e quando urn deles se atreveu a dirigir-se em voz mais alta ao argentino, este de tal sorte gritou, gesticulou e regougou, e tantas vezes bateu corn a bengala no chao e na grade que separava o boticario dos seus fregueses, que houve ajuntamento de transeuntes a porta da botica.

para urn duelo. Entraram-lhe em casa dois sujeitos mandados pelo argentino, que lhe pediram indicasse dois amigos corn quern eles se entendessem para regular as condicOes do encontro.

0 boticario, sem levantar os olhos do alambique, disse-lhes que sim, que as suas testemunhas la iriam ter; mas desde logo preveniu aos dois sujeitos que, sendo ele o desafiado, cabia-lhe a escolha das armas.

Nesse mesmo dia reuniram-se as quatro testemunhas e acordaram que o duelo se realizaria na manha seguinte, no Jardim Botanic°. 0 boticario forneceria as armas.

A hora convencionada achavam-se a postos os adversarios, os padrinhos e urn medico levado pelo argentino.

- Entao? as armas?... perguntou este, olhando ern volta de si.

Tales out of school These rumors are true and they are a proof that ingenuity can do wonders even with very little money.

A recent survey carried out by UNICEF(United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund), has reached a conclusion which has dispelled numerous ancient myths regarding traditional Brazilian education. One of them that Brazil spends too little with education. Not true.

With 4% of its GNP dedicated to education, the country, proportionally, can be compared to the United States. The research covered fifteen Brazilian cities which have improved the quality of the basic or primary educational cycle through the use of simple, creative and sometimes outright ingenious solutions.

A case at hand was the city of Resende, located in the interior of the state of Rio de Janeiro. It improved the school performance by simply pink-slipping half the teaching staff.

Those who were laid-off were mostly working for the bureaucracy instead of actually teaching. However, the remaining text-book slaves got a hefty raise.

Another city, - Iguatu - located in inner Ceara state, closed half of its schools and thereby increased the work quality of its teachers, who were earning below the minimum ($60).

Other cities have even sent some of their kids to private schools and their high-school graduates to college to become teachers.

However, the most exemplary NEWS from BRAZIL - AUGUST 1993

case quoted by UNICEF was that of Resende, located some 160 kilometers (100 miles) from Rio. In 1989, Resende changed its manner of handling public schools.

It started by increasing the school calendar from the traditional 180 days to a 235 day school year,somewhat similar to the average school year in Japan. Pupils who fall behind during the average school year are now able to catch up with their fellow pupils.

The end result: 93 out of every 100 children who go into 1st grade reach the 8th grade. The average for Brazil as a whole is a dismal 30 out of 100.

Furthermore, the city leaders chose to penny-pinch their available funds. They reduced school teaching personnel from 1,265 to 670; hundreds of teachers were loaned out to other city agencies, and many of them were involved in purely bureaucratic and menial functions. With the reduction in personnel, salaries almost tripled.

Iguatu, a small municipality of some 80,000 inhabitants located some 60 miles from Fortaleza, Ceara, chose to improve its educational system by closing down half of its 160 schools.

That was its precise problem: too many schools, which were devouring a substantial part of its budget. In fact, according to a research by the

IPEA (Institute for Applied Economic Investigations), only 52% of the money spent on teaching for the northeastern states, actually made it to the classroom.

The rest was lost to bureaucracy or nepotism.

Iguatu has indeed overcome these small and expensive vices. Ijui, a small city in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, and located some 250 miles from the city of Porto Alegre, was also listed in UNICEF's paper. They singled out 32 rural schools in outlying districts which had small number of students and purchased or hired out buses and vans; over 1,000 students are transported on a daily basis to better organized urban schools. "It's the best spent money within my administration," says Vanderley Burmann, the city's mayor.

The 15 municipalities studied by UNICEF have a common bond: by taking maximum advantage of their meager resources, they have changed education from a mechanical and impersonal event to a highly personal art form.

- Another approach is followed by the small town of Conchas, in the state of Sao Paulo. With a total population of just over 12,000, they have been able to reduce absenteeism by sending out inspectors to a child's home to verify the reason for that child's absence.

Sao Jose da Varginha, in Minas Gerais, is solving its problem by paying tuition for 21 youths, so they can become teachers. The scholarship includes free bus rides into an adjacent city to go to the classes.

Ricardo Rodrigues Maia, one of those future teachers, gets up at six in the morning, milks cows, cuts wood, plants seeds and by two in the afternoon is ready to start his second shift: college.

"I study because I have a very difficult life. I want to teach," says the studious teacher to be.

ECONOMY

Where money grows in trees Brazil has always been the land of bounty. New techniques are multipying the soil's rewards.

The Brazilian rural countryside is in the process of change. A marriage of convenience between test tubes and practical applications has been bringing a boom into Brazil's food farming. Farming research specialists - leaving academia in droves - are being called the new breed of bandeirantes da ciencia (science pioneers) who, together with new-thinkingfazendeiros (farmers) are changing the landscape of the Brazilian rural backwoods.

Marcos Marcelino, a 50 year old Paraibano, is a prime example. Trained in economics, he is probably one of the best promoters of zootechnology within Brazil. Inside his fazenda located in the state of Para, he receives scores of scientists who flock over to look and behold his breeding procedures. In fact, his latest coup has been to bring over 250 heads of cattle to his farm from the U.S., a task

that included chartering several DC-3 planes with expenses totaling more than half a million dollars.

A fairly common complaint in the past had been that scientific projects within Brazil had reached a plateau. Excepting the area relating to research in food production and harvesting, most of the other farming related areas were at a virtual standstill. Scientists were tied up with research projects within the major Brazilian universities, in activities which had very limited exposure outside of the academic world.

Immediate commercial application of research studies was - in most part - out of the question.

The last few years though, a substantial change is happening, although many citydwellers are not privy to what is occuring.

Native hens are now costing barely 60% of what they cost 20 years ago. The country is producing over 100 different varieties of soy beans adapted to all sorts of climates, including the ones with scorching heat found in the notheastern state of Piaui. Grapes and tangerines can now be purchased all year long and products typical of cold climates, like peaches and apples are being produced in the hot North and being exported to Europe.

Brazil is reaching the confines of the future. In a world where the next revolution will relate to feeding an overpopulated and semi-famined world, the country - with its benign climate, mostly good soil, and sheer intensity of its size - has the potential to feed all of its 150 million people and export enough food to a population equal its own. This in turn means hard currency and balancing of its trade.

But what are these successes? Let us see: a new variety of corn labeled BR 201, which is a farmers dream-come-true, producing 7,200 kilos (15,840 lbs) per hectare of land almost twice the normal yield - with a higher protein base and adaptable to the most poorest terrain. Another new item just placed into production is the Brazilian "super-orange".

This variety is twice as productive as any other kind, and is resistant to weeds and insects.

Finally Nestle, the world's largest food producer, has just marketed a new type of NEWS from BRAZIL -AUGUST 1993

soy bean. Knowing the drawbacks of soy bean's taste, they have developed a new variety that tastes exactly like cow milk (yes, cow milk), having paid half a million dollars to Vicosa University researchers to develop the variety that will be in the market very soon.

Farming activities in Brazil have increased 38% during the last 12 years alone, a staggering percentage when you notice that the country's population has only increased 25% during the same period. Soybean production quadrupled, corn production tripled, and rice and wheat doubled.

Other areas are also producing first rate results: genetic engineering and artificial insemination are a 200 million dollar business for Brazil. According to Jose Roberto Perez, a farming engineer: "We now have the technology to increase grain production by 50%; this, without having to increase our total amount of planted area not even an acre."

The bad image of the past relating to agribusiness is being laid to rest. Those perceptions implied that investing into agricultural activities was a losing proposition in Brazil.

An example of the new farmer is Gazicho Eric() Ribeiro. He is the largest individual rice harvester in the world. Two percent of all rice consumed in Brazil comes from his 42,000 hect-

are farm in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul. When he started farming his rice in 1960, he barely was able to cultivate an average of 2,500 kilos (5500 lbs) per hectare; now that amount has tripled to about 6,000 kilos (13,200 lbs). The end result has been that last year alone Ribeiro invoiced over $120 million and is finally getting a good return from his investment.

Brazil's abundant and fertile lands, coupled with the new technology, can actually double or triple agricultural production. The sole problem, however, is not only to be able to increase food production, but at the same time to reduce the costs to the consumer. Reducing production costs, a greater number of people could be fed, at a lower price. Brazilians are on their way to do just that.

The Brazilian cerrado, the area which encompasses the central Brazilian plateau, from the State of Mato Grosso do Sul up to Maranhao, has become the world's greatest food basin. It produces 25% of the grains Brazilians harvest. The cerrado - and the rest of Brazil - will become in the not-so-distant future, the world's breadbasket.

Farming in Brazil has increased 38% during the last 12 years alone. The country's population has only increased 25% during the same period.

For the government leader in the House, Roberto Freire (PPS of Pernambuco), the results of the poll are a indictment not of politicians, but of all public activity, which according to him "is worse." "Nobody can build a democratic society without respected institutions," he states.

Genebaldo Correa, the PMDB leader in the House, suggests that there is an immediate solution for the confidence crisis: "People have always a medicine, the vote," noting that more than 60% of the present members of Congress are new faces chosen in the 1990 elections. "Congress should be renewed continuously. What this poll shows us is that there is a long way to go to make Congress a better place. I'm only worried that people want to do away with Congress, and that would be a great loss, "he states. And he recalls that the Congress was the one that rectified a mistake of the voter, when it forced Collor de Mello, elected with 60% of the votes, out of the presidency.

At least one politician accepts part of the blame for his bad reputation and that of his colleagues. He is senator Jose Paulo Bisol (PSB, Rio Grande do Sul). "The politicians provoke it," he says, not without adding: "The press feeds itself greatly on politics and the corrupted side of it is always more attractive, and more news. From that derives a generalization making it hard for the public to distinguish between who is honest and who isn't."

Bisol also points out the "administrative disaster" that exists in Brazil. "As we have to find a scapegoat, politicians end up being blamed for all incompetence, including the non political ones," he says.

According to him, president Itamar Franco missed a major opportunity to make history and change for ever the face of Brazilian politics.

The senator would like the president to have created a commission to "sweep clean the institutions". It would have been an impeachment of everything that's wrong and crooked in the political arena.

The climate has been so tense that in April, Venezuela heard one of its members in the House of Representatives talking about a daring plan of 80,000 Brazilian garimpeiros who were ready to invade that neighbor nation. It was all fiction but it shows how suspiciously Brazilians are being seen and how the nation is fostering its reputation for Latin American imperialism. Venezuela has shot down two planes with Brazilian garimpeiros aboard and expelled hundreds of these invaders.

Despite all the talk to establish the frontiers between countries in the region, the borderlines nowadays are fluid and imprecise. Signposts now can be found only every 60 km.

Brazil has been at a loss to define its role in the Amazon, caught between the teeth of the develop-or-preserve dilemma. In the 60s and 70s, when the generals were in power, the answer was to open paths in the middle of the jungle with the idea of giving land to peasants so they would settle in the area. A fool's errand. The forest in many areas reclaimed its stolen space very quickly and then came the shocking discovery: 80% of the land in the region is too poor to be used in agriculture.

Even though there are 12 million people in the Brazilian Amazon today, the majority of them are concentrated

in big cities like Belem and Manaus, the capitals of Para and Amazonas respectively. From the 2 million who live in the Amazonas state, for example, only 25% are living close to the forest.

Being accessible by boat is a sine-quanon of even the smallest village in the region.

The 1988 Brazilian Constitution opted clearly for preservation. Mineral extraction in the area (which is the richest mineral territory on the planet) has been limited to national companies. Some Brazilians, critical of the way government is dealing with the region, have been presenting Venezuela and other Amazon countries as models to be followed. In Santa Elena de Clairen, for example, the Caracas government established a Taorepang Indian reservation that exists side by side with gold and diamond mines.

There, garimpeiros are controlled by the state and assume the responsibility of rehabilitating the mine areas when they are exhausted, covering craters,

and planting grass and trees.

Criticizing "ecologists, priests and bureaucrats" who believe that the Amazon must remain intact without even a bush being touched, the weekly magazine Veja wrote recently with a big dose of irony: "In Brazil there is a kind of schizophrenia. Among ravagers there is the belief that the forest can be destroyed with impunity.

The rival band.. .thinks you cannot cut not even a bush in the Amazon, since this would be an ecological crime. That's why the people who live in the forest are fleeing to neighboring countries.

Those who stay here are the Indians, who go ahead with their mahogany export business to the civilized world."

Once again Funai, the National Foundation for the Indians, is actively expelling garimpeiros from the Yanomami reservation. More than 4,000 have been expelled, according to Funai, and at least another 4,000 remain there inside the forest. It seems a Sisyphean effort. Like the tragic hero, Funai seems condemned to fly out the intruders only to have to repeat the same action again and again. Apparently, the only ones who surrender" are those who need a free lift back home for which they would have to pay some grams of gold. The forest continues to be an inviolable sanctuary for those who choose to hide there.

Even the Indians, who have adopted some garimpeiro habits as eating rice and manioc flour, have been complaining.

"Funai only disturbs our friendship with the garimpeiros," says chief Pedro Polipuma from the Parafuri tribe. "We ask Funai to give us things, but they don't give us anything." Some garimpeiros at least are giving them little gifts as hammocks, fish hooks and bags of rice and flour. • 19

Forget all the plans made by the national Brazilian soccer team for the qualifying phase of the World Cup '94, which started in July and will continue until September. Ricardo Teixeira, the president of CBF (Brazilian Confederation of Football) has decided to keep the players in Teresopolis, Rio de Janeiro, instead of Bogota, Bolivia. Prior to the this decision, the national team was to have been housed for weeks in Bogota (8,500 fee above sea level), so the squad could adapt itself to the altitude. Teixeira changed his mind, however, explaining that a location far from Brazil would represent a physical and psychological wear and tear for the athletes and not good preparation for a different altitude.

From the beginning of July until the middle of September, the Brazilian contingent will remain at Granja Comary in Teresopolis, only travelling to the game sites at the last minute. For the game against Bolivia, July 25, in La Paz, for example, the team decided to arrive one day before in the neighboring city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, almost at sea level, going up to the capital only three hours before the contest, and returning immediately afterwards.

"It has been proved by several medical experts that arriving at the last minute leaves no time to feel the problem of the altitude," said Teixeira. "It's better to do this than to put the players in locations that are not always good, far away .from their families.

This way, they all will have more free time, too."

Funny thing is that the last time this strategy was used everything went wrong for the Brazilians. That was in 1979, when the team arrived in La Paz, only two days before a game against Bolivia for the America Cup. Brazil lost by 2 to 1 and players like Joao Paulo, Nilton Batata, and Zico, became very sick and indisposed.

Due to the plan, Brazil canceled a friendly game that was scheduled for the middle of July in Bogota, Colombia.

The last-minute strategy was never the favorite option of the coaches. Head coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has harshly criticized this formula. According to Lidio Toledo, the national team doctor, the change of altitude would be useful only if the player had full three weeks to train in the new environment. Parreira defended the idea, however, that ten days would be more than enough for that purpose.

Altitude, however, is not the worst problem for the Brazilians.

But choosing the final team could be. Brazil now has two good national teams: one playing overseas, mainly on European teams, and the other made up of players from the best Brazilian teams. The latter has played in the America Cup. If the international and national teams could be reunited at the same time, Brazil would have an invincible team. That would be impossible largely because of CBF's disorganization, and inability to free all the "foreigners" from their overseas commitments. The good work being done by the domestic squad is leading some people to ask: are the "foreigners" really necessary? Parreira doesn't agree with that. He has chosen the national team and it has a very strong foreign accent (see 21

The choices - from 22 players only eight are playing in Brazil right now - show that the football-dance-andinvention that characterized our soccer style until now has lost its appeal, at least for the CBF officials. Of the eight nationals, six are from Sao Paulo, the Brazilian champion, a team that has been trained a la European, where physical preparedness, long rehearsed plays and lots of discipline are the main traits.

The testing phase has ended.

Parreira knows that any defeat now will be judged much more severely by the 160 million coaches that the country has. The head coach is self assured and says he has no fear. "Brazil still plays the best football in the world," he proclaims. His only fear is that he might not be able to use the "foreigners" because of schedule conflicts with their teams. How about the fans? "I'm only human and know that I can be crucified any moment if we start to lose. But I'm a little more prepared to face this problem now," he states.

Brazilian drivers are everywheTg. At least in larger cities like Los Angeles. You can even have your private survey... If you ask the food delivery man (or woman) who rings your bell where is he (or she) from, chances are that one out of three will say Brazil. They deliver food for Pizza Hut, Domino's Pizza, any food chain or small restaurant you can imagine. Numero Uno is no exception.

This is important to learn how Domingo, born in the Dominican Republic, turned out to be a Brazilian restaurant owner. As the owner of a Numero Uno outlet, he got to know many Brazilians. One of them, Monica, from Rio de Janeiro, became his right arm and then a partner in what is today the Domingo's Dee Dee Diner.

Usually I try Brazilian restaurants in the company of B. But this time she was in Brazil, visiting friends. So I had to do it by myself. Domingo's Dee Dee is located on Wilshire Blvd, in Brentwood, at a very busy location. I was pleased, then, to know that they have parking under the building, with an hour and a half validation.

Another good surprise was the disposal of the tables outside the restaurant. It was a typical hot summer day and this sure was a plus. Unfortunately, I can not say the same about the environment inside the restaurant. Too dark for my taste. Maybe that will not make any difference for those who love darker spaces.

The waitress was very courteous and she's promptly brought me the menu. But what a shock! I had come to a Brazilian restaurant and I couldn't see any Brazilian food in the list that had been handed to me. A case of mistaken address? When I called the waitress for an explanation she answered with a "Oh, let me bring you our Brazilian menu." So, if you want the good food, be prepared to have to ask for it.

Two minutes later, with the correct menu on hand, I chose a chicken stroganoff. It came fast, but I'm afraid a delay could happen during busy hours. There was only this waitress and the restaurant had many people ready to leave. This is just a speculation. Probably they have more people to serve during peak hours.

The portion that came was generous, enough to feed a hungry person. As for the taste, I have to say it was delicious. I wish I could have stayed there all afternoon just relishing piece by piece the stroganoff. It came with rice and fried potatoes, both well prepared. I had guaranci to drink but they also offer Brazilian and draft beer. My weight problems persist so I keep avoiding desserts.

When I asked for a Brazilian style coffee, the waitress said she would prepare one specially for me. My suggestion is that they have it on the menu.

Despite these minor flaws pointed, Domingo's Dee Dee is a pleasant place to go for a tasty and generous portion of Brazilian food at a more than reasonable price (I paid $11., including the tip). Their menu is quite varied including some delicacies you will not find in other restaurants in the Los Angeles area. I would recommend that the Brazilian menu be handed out to all customers.

With their delicious food, they might expect some good surprises.

Mud opera Mixing fact and fiction, Brazilian TV is busy retelling the story of the Collor years.

Collor, the real-life villain

0 Maraja (The Maharaja), the story created by Manchete to depict the doomed Collor era, has grown a lot since its inception.

Planned as a mini-series about the ex-president Fernando Collor de Mello, the project ended up being transformed into a mini-soap-opera with at least 65 chapters, according to director Marcos Schechtam.

Robbery, corruption, influence traffic, sexual abuse, drugs and mysticism are facts that have marked the administration of the former president. All of this intriguing raw material is being used to produce the next Manchete's soap-opera, the filet-mignon of Brazilian TV. 0 Maraja is a novelty in the sense that it mixes telejournalism with docudrama. The villains however are not the ones responsible for the dramatic thrust in the story, and the press is the hero.

The production was a collaborative effort of writer Jose Louzeiro, scriptwriters Regina Braga and Eloy Santos, and director Marcos Schechtman. The locations range from Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro, and Sao Paulo to Alagoas, Collor's home state.

Wealth Machine will deal with the universe of commissions and kickbacks. Crime Syndicate is the space reserved to tell how Alagoas politics contributed to the formation of the corrupt presidency.

The plot's connecting thread is the investigation started by journalist Ana, played by Julia Lemmertz. She will face all kinds of difficulties in her obstinate search.

Ana, who starts the story as a TV reporter, is soon fired from her job and goes to work for a newspaper.

There she finds two strong allies, a photographer played by Antonio Pitanga and driver Egberto (actor Jose Dumont), who in real life was called Eriberto. Dana Estevao and her zest for life

She's hot. She has the talent, the voice, the friends. She's ready for the big times.

We may be wekorning an exciting new recording to our album Shelves before long.

There's an interesting story of mutual admiration behind this project, one that involves world travel, a near miss, a chain of invitations, and a multitude of great talents.

The story begins with one of the talents, Eliana Estevao, who in 1981 left Brazil and went to Europe as a background vocalist for Toquinho. She had been singing since age three, had been performing since age five.

She had appeared in the. Brazilian production of Jesus Christs Super Star in 1971 and in the following years had been singing in other theater productions and in nightclubs.

The European segment of her career began in Italy, where two important things happened. First, Estevao bought a cassette by an American singer, Dionne Warwick.

Estevao remembers hearing Promises Promises on that cassette and thinking, "Oh my God, she's wonderful." Estevao had found a new singing idol. Second, Toquinho's manager asked her to join the Brazilian review Oba Oba, a tour that took her to France, Switzerland, Spain, Israel, and finally, in 1987 to the United States, where the show opened in Las Vegas.

when Oba Oba arrived in Los Angeles with Estevao as the lead singer. "Dionne Warwick came to see the show at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood," recalls Estevao. It was 1989 and Estevao's last month with the show, her contract at an end. "I returned to Brazil, and the company stayed here and moved to the Wilshire theater." Warwick was so impressed with EstevAo's singing that she went looking for her at the Wilshire, only to ask, "Where's the singer?"

Fortunately, a second invitation made up for bad timing. The owner of the Catalina Club, another Hollywood venue located near the Pantages Theater, had seen Estevao in Oba Oba. "Six months later," she says, "I got a phone call in Brazil, inviting me to come back to Los Angeles to sing my own work in the Catalina nightclub." By that time, Estevao's style had departed significantly from her work in 013a Oba, but it still made a strong impression. In that audience sat the owner of La Ve Lee, the San Fernando Valley nightclub where EstevAo has been appearing since 1991 as a result of the third link in the chain of invitations. And where Dionne Warwick finally saw EstevAo a second time.

"Dionne is my ideal of singing," says Estevao. "I never imagined I would meet her. Never. So it was terrific And now I see her sitting in the audience and coming to see me sing and singing with me. It's so good.

Dionne has been behind me since 1991, and I have to thank her because she is responsible for my staying here in the United States."

Currently, Warwick is lending financial and professional support to Estevao's recording project and will sing on one track.

Appearing on the album as instrumentalists are band members Antonio Santa on bass, Ron Wagner on percussion, and newest band member Marcos Ariel, who lends not only his keyboard skills but also his arranging and composing talents to the group. Estevao has also gathered around her some of L.A:s outstanding Brazilian performers, including Rique Pantoja and Renato Neto. News from Brazil's own Gil Ferreira, founder, will sit in on guitar. "All my friends:" says Esthao.

Estevao hopes to accomplish several goals with the new release. "I always say that my mission here is to showcase Brazilian music," she says. "I modify it a little bit, but I conserve the original essence. Because Brazil is so rich in rhythm, so rich in melody.

Few people here have an idea of what Brazil brine. People know bossa nova and that's it.

And we have a lot more. I try to work in as'

much as I Can." EstevAo has chosen music from all over the country to include in her live,repertoire and onher album. "The samba has a lot of variations.

The bald° has a lot of variation. We need to show that," she says, adding that, "It's hard because in the United States it's difficult for people to accept what comes from the outside. But we by."

On the flip side, Estevao hopes that the album will introduce her work to her own country on a broader basis. She has performed in Sao Paulo, where she was born, but most of her professional career has taken place away from home. "My own country doesn't know me," she says smiling and won'dering whether a U.S. production might be just what she needs, "because, you know, if something comes from the outside, Brazil accepts it.

Estevao is producing the album herself, something she has done before with a recording entitled Bailarina that she produced in Brazil in the early 1980s. She plans to record live to give the music a nightclub feeling, like her shows at La Ve Lee. "I like to be close to people," she says. "I enjoy a lot talking to people and seeing their faces. I like the atmosphere at the club. It's like home."

Soft-spoken with 'a hearty laugh, Estevao is a self-proclaimed homebody who spends a lot of time studying English and listening to music. On stage, she is a singer's singer, and one quickly understands why a fellow vocalist would go a long way to follow and support EstevAo's career.

Naming musicians such as Edo Lobo, Chico Buarque, Gilberto Gil, and Caetano Veloso among her favorites, she is determined to bring what she loves to her audiences. So the story ends as it begins, with great talent, and if EstevAo has her way, with a great album. "Because I am so exi§ente," she says.

"Everything has to be perfect."

Jurassic blabber When Marcio Souza decides to teach us one or two things about the Amazon and the art of writing, while an assassin is on the loose, who gets lost is the reader.

In Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's 1912 novel, The Lost World, Professor Challenger journeys from England to Brazil, carves his way into the heart of the Amazon, and on the upper Rio Negro he discovers a plateau where dinosaurs haven't yet been told that they're supposed to be extinct.

"All right, in my sequel," says Marcio Souza, who doubles as both author and cast member in Los World, "Professor Challenger's granddaughter appears, a short and petulant Englishwoman who works for a financial magazine designed for yuppies. After covering the closing session of a meeting of the wealthy nations in Geneva, bored to death, she enters a travel agency and buys a ticket for the furthermost spot she can get to for a weekend trip. She winds up in Manaus, lodged in the Tropical Hotel, where she has three days of unusual adventures."

What draws us forward is Jane Challenger's revelation that in Brazil, in Manaus, "there still ex28

ist... species of capitalists considered extinct in England since the eighteenth century." We're unsure of what this portends, but, hey, it sounds like we're in for a good time.

Anyone expecting a straightforward story line, however, will be disappointed. In a previous life, Souza must have been a large river, fluid and meandering. The focus suddenly shifts from character development to Souza's idea of the outside world's perception of the Amazon region, the author now onthe defensive about his being part of an exotic attraction, another rain forest sideshow. When European TV crews pop up in Manaus with pre-set notions of what they'll find, meaning the quirky and the colorful, here's an author who - again barging into his own novel - would have them skip the parrots and the hovelson-stilts, and instead listen to what the people who live there have to say. Souza is clearly uneasy about these foreigners, educated and worldly, who've already sized-up Brazil and its problems. Very simple, they proclaim: destruction or conservation.

Jane Challenger booking a flight without asking or being told where she's going runs against what we know of her character, but her arrival in Manaus must be snugly contrived. Must? Well, the subtle use of coincidence has never been one of Souza's strong points.

There's a bit of intrigue in her grandfather's old stomping ground, and Jane's return to London is interrupted by the author-narrator's account of a train trip from Frankfurt to East Berlin in which he shares a compartment with several other notable Brazilianwriter, including Ignacio de Loyola Brandao, LygiaFagundes Telles, and Joao Ubaldo Ribeiro. Their discussion is lively, the juxtaposition fresh, but fortunately Jane apNEWS from BRAZIL-AUGUST 1993

pears to admonish Souza for allowing these diversions. She chides him for having a plot.

Furthermore, "It almost seems as if you don't have anything to say."

Nothing to say- or too much?

We're beginning to wonder where this book is going, because soon we're listening in on what it means to be a man of letters in the 20th Century. "To write today," a taxi driver tells him, "is to practice fake paleontology. It is to reinvent the Piltdown man." To himself, Souza admits that the cabbie isn't really off the mark. The latter, meanwhile, isn't mincing words: "The novel is dead."

Not so the subplots that proliferate and convolute, and we're in Manaus once again, this time with Jane and her numerous colleagues. The former governor of Amazonas has just been killed by a poisonous dart, one of only three in existence.

The prime murder suspect is none other than Jane's butler, who's back in London. Or is he?

Henry Amazon, we learn, is an Amazonian Indian and one of the last of his tribe. The fatal dart was in the Challenger household, and not only has it vanished, Henry himself is nowhere to be found. This cliff side footpath of coincidences leads to Jane's encounter with a sympathetic group of Indians, setting us up for yet another rickety highbrow conversation.

The taciturn Indians open up, and - can we say we're surprised? - they turn out to be quite eloquent.

Shall I comment on the Jihad Jivarros and their plot to blow up the Leviathan, a transatlantic steamer that will carry most of the characters in this book from Manaus to Belem? Should I explore the reason behind Chilean novelist Juan Sender's peek into the 21st century and his meeting with Wallace Kxalendjer, "the last descendent of a notable line of trailblazers"? And if I do so, am I obliged NEWS from BRAZIL - AUGUST 1993

Brazilian musicians can't resist the U.S. and vice-versa.

The Brazilianization of world music and in particular of American jazz is not a new phenomenon. Curiously, our choro, which to the American ear could sound like a jazz jam session, was born around 1870, before ragtime and jazz. Pixinguinha and his band Os Oito Batutas were a big hit in Paris in 1922, playing chorinhos and maxixes. In 1947, Brazilian Laurindo de Almeida was already playing with Stan Kenton's orchestra in the United States, settling soon after in Los Angeles, where he started a recording career that would promptly produce samba, jazz, baitio, and, naturally, choro.

Some of his albums, such as Viva Bossa Nova (1962), were a commercial success and he would win ten Gramrily Awards in the 50s and 60s. At age 75, Laurindo Don. "Like s' tarting over." de Almeida is still active.

The latest Brazilian musician following in his footsteps and vowing to get a Grammy himself hasn't arrived yet, but he has already packed his luggage and should be moving to Los Angeles before the end of the year. He is Cesar Camargo Mariano, 49 years old, with a career of 35 years and 24 solo albums. The latest one, Natural, is being released simultaneously in Brazil and the U.S..

If everything works out as planned, Camargo Mariano will stay here for a couple of years, record one or more CDs, get his Grammy, and be back home in Salo Paulo in no time. Of course, he might decide to stay here, as some many others have decided to do; or he might cut his trip short as singer-composer Ivan Lins, who wasn't able to stay more than eight months in the U.S..

Camargo Mariano has already a contract with Verve, the jazz label from powerful Polygram Records, which is releasing, simultaneously here and in Brazil, Natural, his 24th and latest solo album. The selection includes classics of the MPB (Brazilian Popular Music) such as Chico Buarque and Francis Hime's Trocando em MiUdo, Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes' A Felicidade, and Jorge Ben's Zazueira. And for the first time Marcelo Mariano, on bass, appears on a record with his famous father.

"I intend to solidify my career overseas by doing a serious promotional work over there," said the 30

keyboardist-composer recently.

"I've dedicated myself to Brazil all these years and I now feel that I want to research a little bit more.

I want to win a Grammy." Together with his next CD, a piano solo already taped in Los Angeles, Camargo Mariano intends to release a song-book in four volumes.

The flight to American skies can be more treacherous than at first sight. Composer-singer-guitarist Dori Cayrnini, 49, the oldest son of Dorival, has some words of caution for those willing to try the transcontinental jump. "It's hard, very hard", he commented. "It' s like starting over."

Dori should know. He's moved to L.A. in 1990 and is only now starting to make a name for himself. His last album, Kicking Cans has sold more than 30,000 copies. The number may not be

impressive when compared to any top 40 hit, but is a good result for any foreign musician recording here. Dori, who will be playing on August 7 at Ambassador Auditorium Pasadena Jazz Festival, together with Ivan Lins and Ricardo Silveira, has released three albums since coming to the United States, the same number of releases during a 25-year career in Brazil.

For Camargo Mariano he has a warning: "He has to be prepared to work in bars and little clubs for years. He is not going to be opening soon at the Carnegie Hall. This is just for Tom Jobim, and only once in a while."

Ivan Lins couldn't take the pressure and the frustration. After eight months in Los Angeles last year, the composer decided to go back to Brazil, complaining of how expensive it was to live in NEWS from BRAZIL - AUGUST 1993

the U.S. and concluding that he felt "more useful" in his own country. "I've finally found out that making a career as a musician in the United States wasn't what I really wanted. To get into soundtracks for movies, for example, it would take an investment of two years. It's a very closed club." Not that he gave up for good.

Ivan keeps an apartment in Los Angeles and has a manager in the U.S. looking for his interests.

For those, whose saudude (longing) from Brazil is too overpowering, the Teo Lima solution would be ideal. Teo, 46, the Batacoto band leader, has been shuttling between Brazil and the West Coast for the last four years. "The best thing", he says, "is to be in the air bridge. I go to the United States, I make my money, and I fly back to Brazil." He also has some words of caution: "To go to the United States and to forget our music is a strategic mistake. It's pointless to try to compete with them playing funk."

One of the most recent immigrant musicians is Carioca composer-keyboardist Rique Pantoja, 37, who moved to Los Angeles in 1991. He explains: "I felt that I had no room to grow anymore. I had already played with the best Brazilian musicians." Pantoja, who has played for Gilberto Gil, Milton Nascimento, and Djavan has no complaints about his move: "Here I'm always surrounded by talented artists who appreciate what I do.

There is an interchange that's not so common in Brazil. In Brazil, things are hard. Every time a friend calls or writes about the situation, I get very depressed," says Pantoja.

Other famous musicians with the American bug are Sergio Mendes, Eumir Deodato, Flora Purim and her husband Airto Moreira, Moacir Santos, Oscar Castro Neves e Nana Vasconcelos. Pianist-composer Sergio Mendes, 52, who moved to the United States in 1952, won his own Grammy in 1992; but success is nothing new for this musician from Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro.

In 1966, his Sergio Mendes & Brazil '66 went gold and up to number six on the pop charts.

Repeating the feat, his next three albums (Equinox, Look Around, and Fool on the Hill) also went gold. No Brazilian has reaped more benefits than he has in American territory from the popularity of Brazilian music in the United States.

In the 70s, Flora Purim, 50, was also an artistic and commercial success singing jazzfusion, in English and in Portuguese. Several times down beat magazine awarded her the NEWS from BRAZIL-AUGUST 1993

title of best female jazz vocalist, starting in 1974. Airto Moreira, her husband, who followed her to the States in 1968 out of love and certainty that he could convince her to go back to Brazil, is probably one of the most important names responsible for the so called ,'percussion invasion", which since the 70's has colored much of American music with Brazilian rhythms and instruments.

Sax player Moacir Santos, 66, who came to the United States in 1965, is also an arranger and conductor. Airto and Flora learned their musical theory from him and he continues to be a tutor and mentor to younger Brazilian newcomers.

He was nominated for a Grammy on the early 70's for his album Maestro.

Another, import, composerarranger-keyboar dist Eumir Deodato, 49, has instilled the Brazilian flavor into Yankee pop, arranging and producing, for among others, Aretha Franklin, Earth, Wind and Fire, Bette Midler and Kool and the Gang.

And also there is Nana Vasconcelos, 48, percussionist and composer who opted for New York, after a successful career in Europe during the 70s. •

TOURISM Rio de Janeiro and the Amazon Jungle are unquestionably the best known features of Brazil. But, Brazil's vast lands hide yet unexploited resources of which the greatest are in the west central region of Brazil .

They are home to Chapada dos Guimaraes and the Pantanal, the best place in the world to watch wild life in its natural habitat.

Start at the city of Cuiaba, the capital of the state of Mato Grosso, that was founded in 1719 by gold and slave-seeking Bandeirantes, and meet a hospitable population of about 280,000 that is very much in tune with the nature that surrounds it. In Santo Antonio de Leverger, a town 28 Km ( 17 miles) from Cuiaba, you can taste one of the greatest and finest variety of fish and food of the region.

You can fly to Cuiaba from any major Brazilian city, or you can drive and enjoy the wonderful adventure

And then come to Mato Grosso to really watch mother nature show her tricks.

At the Ponto Zero, in Chapada dos Guimardes - city named after the extended elevation with lavish vegetation where it is located - 67 km (41 miles) north from Cuiaba, you can experience an astounding gravity defying phenomenon where massive amounts of underground iron are able to pull a car, with its engine off, up hill at a speed of 40 km/h (25 m/ h). You will can also watch another of nature's wonders in action: a cycle of evaporation of water, formation of clouds, and rainfall, all in around 20 minutes.

This is also the location of the Latin American Geodesic Center, and majestic waterfalls, like the 86 meter (280 feet) Veu de Noiva (Bridal Veil) and Andorinha (Swallow), with its seven falls.

Chapada dos Guimardes is the thrill and the danger of nature in the deep canyon of Portao do Inferno (Hell's Gate); is the excitement to hike the mountains, and to explore caves with old inscriptions and underground lakes.

The second part of this nature voyage takes you to the Pantanal, the largest wildlife reserve of the world, where biological and botanical life are protected by law. Despite Amazon's fame, the Pantanal is cer-

tainly a much better place to watch wildlife in its natural habitat. Its 240,000 sq km, about half the size of France, extends into Bolivia, Paraguay, and Brazil of which 100,000 sq km is Brazilian land.

The Pantanal floods from October to March, during which time the fish mating season occurs. But only 2% of the land is under water in the remaining months.

At this time rivers and lakes are filled with snappers, surubim, five pound dourados, and piranhas, that supply the entire Pantanal population.

The best time to fish is between the months of April and May. That's also when the blooming period occurs with germination of flowers of intense beauty and fragrance, making the best period to visit the Pantanal's low flatland.

Another popular tourist activity is the photo safari. Pantanal's rich animal life, protected from hunting by law, calls for an extended photo session of its natural inhabitants living on both sides of the 145 km (90 miles) Transpantarteira Road. In this stretch of land you'll find some almost extinct animals including alligators, jaguars, deers, anteaters, armadillos, capybaras, tapirs, otters, and monkeys.

Bird watching is another Pantanal attraction.

The variety is as great as the beauty of the local birds. Groups of blue macaw, parrots, herons, cranes, Brazilian lapwings, and the tuiuiti with its 3 meter (10 feet) wing span are only a small example of what this land has to offer between the months NEWS from BRAZIL - AUGUST 1993

of July and September, the mating season.

The Pantanal National Park is at 100 km (60 miles) south of Cuiaba. But other entries to this ecological sanctuary are located in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, where you'll find the biggest portion of the Pantanal, and the city of Campo Grande, the state's capital, is its south door.

This city offers excellent restaurants, hotels, and all kinds of tourist services, such as nature hikes, horseback riding, photo safaris, that are geared for the senses, and to guide you through this amazing land that has been preserved almost entirely intact. •

Since her debut as a star in Nelson Pereira dos Santos Como Era Gostoso o Meu Frances (How Tasty Was My Little Frenchman) (1972), a film that gave her international renown, Ana Maria Magalhaes has grown in more than one way. Working behind the camera she has shown the same artistry, directing such films as The Baby, Spray Jet, and Tomorrow' s Samba.

When Group I Films started looking for international filmmakers to direct Erotique, a feature film showing the eroticism of the 90's through the eyes of women, the choice of Magalhaes was very natural. She promptly accepted the task, deciding to direct an adaptation of A Lingua do P. (The P. Language), a story by Brazilian novelist Clarice Lispector.

The Brazilian director will be joining in this effort three other directors from Germany, Hong Kong and United States, respectively. The four different episodes will be filmed in English with an international cast. The people at Group I are betting that Erotique will please the general public as much as the art crowd.
