With one more attempt to turn Brazil into a Parliamentary regime placed in the drawers of history after the April 21 plebiscite, Brazilians have already started the presidential run for 1994. There are already three early favorites, with Luis Inacio Lula da Silva the same leftist ex-union leader who lost to Fernando Collor de Mello the last time around - the front runner. A late April DataFolha poll showed 22% of the electorate leaning towards Lula (PT), with 15% preferring Sao Paulo mayor Paulo Maluf (PPR) and another 14% whose first choice is Rio's governor Leonel Brizola (PDT). Preliminary results showed Parliamentarism with only 26% of the votes, against 58% for Presidentialism. As for the choice between Monarchy and Republic, the latter captured 71% of the votes, leaving the would-be kings a meager 11%.

History playing Tired of playing the medieval themes of "Dungeons & Dragons" but unable to find something more tropical, three Cariocas decided to create their own Role Playing Game (RPG). A little research and they opted for stories dealing with Bandeirantes, frontiersmen from Sao Paulo who helped the country expand its territory. The result was 0 Desafio dos Bandeirantes - Aventuras na Terra de Santa Cruz (The Bandeirantes Challenge - Adventures on Santa Cruz Land), 140 pp. According to Flavio Andrade, Carlos Klimick and Luis Ricon, all in their early 20s, theirs is the first RPG inspired by Brazilian folklore and history.

Who's gonna feed the baby?

One more clue about how hard times have been in Brazil. In the last two years in the state of Sao Paulo, there has been an 80 % increase of women trying to force men to submit to paternity tests, thus compelling them to pay pension for the rejected child. A profile drawn by Imes (Institute of Social Medicine and Criminoly) paints the typical mother as a poor single parent between 30 and 40 with a three-to four-year-old child. For the most part, fathers are ambulant salesmen and peasants. Curiously, 10% of the a 4.4 thousand cases seen by 'mese every year involve military policemen. The state organization, the only one that does the paternity test for free, spends $4.7 thousand daily for only the lab material for the exams. It takes an average of llmonths before a mother has her case started. While in Sweden, paternity cases can involve as many as eight possible genitors, in Sao Paulo there is never more than one suspect.

That was a short honeym000n. In six months, president Itamar Franco has shown a remarkable ability to outdo his predecessor in unpopularity. While after six months in Brasilia, Collor de Mello had 34% of "very good" and "good" opinions to show for his administration, in the same period Itamar managed to get only 18% believing that his government is that good. And Collor had to deal with the confiscation of savings he had made.

According to many, all Itamar has to show is his "Plano Nada" ("Plan Nothing"). Another 54% of Brazilians give a "regular" mark to the president. In February, 36% of the the population approved Itamar.

That was his highest mark.

Since then he has been falling. With himself at his side and a pace of desperate inertia, Itamar, apparently doesn't need anybody else to blame for the poor rating.

Deep in the dense jungles of Amazonia, a small crowd of Indians of all ages gathers around a TV set; it is time for the nightly novela. Straggling in from surrounding hamlets, slight in build and quiet in demeanor, the Yartomami Indians are a normal sight to the soldiers stationed at this small military outpost in Brazil's territorial fringe.

To some it is merely entertainment to kill boredom. But what the programming coming in from Sao Paulo and Rio via the satellite dish is actually killing here in these backwoods is a primitive culture: the Yanomamis of Amazonia.

Who are the Yanomamis? They are not one but rather several tribes. And although it is difficult to calculate their exact number, the Brazilian government estimates that there are around ten thousand of them. Brazil does not have the largest Yanomami population; Venezuela is estimated to have some 11 thousand more. And even within such a small populace, there are variations of language.

COVER against cultural absorption on the one hand, and waging a more urgent battle a gainst garimpeiros who are encroaching, and in some cases attacking their ever shrinking jungle habitat on the other.

Caught in the middle of this struggle are the National Foundation of the Indian (Funai), progressive elements within local churches, foreign and local religious missionaries, non-governmental organizations, the Brazilian Attorney's Association and all sorts of groups espousing the defense of Indian rights.

Challenging them all are the so-called "Rambos" - extremists within the military and the government who oppose any change to the status quo; one which, up until now, has been highly profitable for them, the garimpeiros, and a host of others.

The Indians, the Yanomamis have always been there. They were there when the first priests and soldiers came in the 1500's, forcing their way outside of the strict borders imposed upon Portugal by the Tordesilhas Treaty,

the remaining Indian populace is to keep them away from the Eurocentrist mentality. It seems paradoxical, since they have established an enormous school in the northern town of Yaurete's, where they teach a typical Brazilian Portuguese curriculum.

The Yanomamis of today, though genetically the same as those seen by Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira during his eight-year Amazonic stint in the eighteenth century (see accompanying artide), are not

physically the same. Over 900 drawings found among 89 volumes of manuscripts describing his trips through Amazonia depict a race of small but robust people with a distinct character and culture.

Collor government. The area, roughly the size of Portugal, is constantly under invasion by gold-searching garimpeiros, mahogany tree poachers, and cocaine cartels, which build clandestine landing strips for refueling stops. Under ex-President Collor's regime, the Army and Justice Department jointly carried out Operacao Selva Livre (Operation Free the Jungle), a project in which 56 out of 73 known landing strips were bombed and destroyed.

But the resources available to the Federal government to protect encroachments upon Yanomami territory is minimal; barely 30 Federal agents are available to police an area the size of Sao Paulo State. In the areas where Funai stakes a presence, it is mostly limited to scarcely one Funai official. The Army keeps two battalions, one each in Roraima and Rio Negro, a total of 1,400 men. And the five border posts only have the support of several helicopters and an aging fleet of post-World War II propeller aircrafts flown by daring and driven young pilots of the Brazilian Air Force (FAB).

The problem is complex, and feasible solution do not seem forthcoming; the Yanomamis seem to be heading toward an irreversible process of cultural absorption.

Watching them wear their brightly colored shirts bearing the Brazilian national colors as they sit chatting in broken Portuguese while watching the latest novela and biting into a chocolate candy bar manufactured and "imported" from Sao Paulo, you could not think otherwise.

But if the words of General Bayma Denis hold any truth, there seems to be no winner in this struggle for survival in the Amazons. "The Yanomami Indians are just socially neglected Brazilians; they are poor and so are the garimpeiros." And in Brazil, anyone who happens to be poor runs the risk of dying early and ungloriously. In the war between garimpeiros and Indians, however, there are no victors. Only vanquished.

Thanks to Ferreira we are able to know so much about the Yanomamis and how little they have changed in the last two centuries.

To this day, Amazonia is still something mysterious and foreign, even to Brazilians themselves. And strangely enough, most of what is known about the Yanomamis and the Amazonia, has not been learned recently. In fact, it was a Baiano from the city of Salvador, Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira, born in 1756, who provided the most complete and comprehensive study of the region. He was Brazil's veatest explorer and certainly one of the world's vreatest humanists.

Ferreira studied in the University of Coimbra, Portugal, where he received his doctorate in Natural History in 1779. He had an excellent understanding of the plant, animal and mineral worlds.

What he understood best, however, were people. In 1783, the Portuguese Crown appointed him to carry out a trip through the

territories of Grao Para, Rio Negro and Mato Grosso.

After first studying Maraj6 island and the areas surrounding Belem, he proceeded to the Rio Nero and Rio Branco basins, cutting through the region covering the current state of Roraima. During the next four years, he systematically went on to research and describe each and every type of mineral, animal and 'plant life he encountered, as well as describing the Indians and their customs. Assisted by two painters, he had drawings made of almost every image worthy of keeping for future generations to see.

animals and plants, which were sent to the Royal Museum of Lisbon, through the auspices of his friend from Para, captain Luis Pereira da Cunha. The captain, however, contracted a huge debt which promptly ate up all his savings and a future dower for his daughter, putting an abrupt end to Rodrigues Ferreira's remittances to Lisbon. An appreciative man, Ferreira did howevermarry the captain's daughter, despite the lack of dowry.

The 57 written volumes and over 912 drawings and water colors were subsequently returned to Brazil for publication. In spite of the treasure of information that it contained, it was not until 1974 (150 years later) that it finally came to be published. The works, titled Via einFilosofica(PhilosophicalVoyage), area remarkable insight into the past, the present, and the future of the world's last known frontier and its natives: the Amazonia and the Yanomamis.

When captain Pedro Teixeira left the city of Belem do Para for the city of Quito (Ecuador) in 1639, he was certain that this trip would help in the demarcation of the borders between the Spanish and Portuguese holdings in South America.

Although Portugal's limits were restricted by the Tordesilhas Treaty, the fact that he was able to establish border forts on this side of the Andes, where the Napo and Amazon rivers met, was basis enough for the Baron of Rio Branco to establish permanent frontiers with the Spanish kingdom of Peru.

Legends about Amazonia began even as the region was discovered. The name of the river and region is attributed to a Spaniard, Francisco de Orellana, the first European to explore the area. Orellana had seen women warriors, a tropical version of the Amazons of Greekmythology. However,

the most persistent legend was that of El Dorado.

It was rumored that this secret city of the Incas, located next to a lake, was all made of gold. And curious enough, every version places El Dorado approximately in the same area: the lands in which the Yanomamis have always lived.

Over three hundred years later, the legends still abound. TheYanomamisare still in Amazonia and El Dorado is still to be found.

Discovery of this magazine comes at a most appropriate time as I have recently returned from a very nice trip to Salvador and Rio. I would like to learn more about Brazil as I definitely plan to make a return trip there.

Everyone I encountered in Brazil was nice and, of course, Carnaval was most interesting, fun and spectacular.

Brazilian women in particular rate considerably higher, tome, than their American counterparts (indeed they are in a league all their own with no competition from Americanwo men).

I found Brazilians in general to have a warmth, friendliness and sincerity that increasingly is lacking in Americans. As for the alleged "crime" in Rio, I was most comfortable there and indeed feel more apprehension and caution in the streets of San Francisco. All in all, it was a most worthwhile trip and I look forward to my next trip to Brazil.

Quase simultaneamente, outro berreiro - desta vez feminino e tremelicante - saiu do banheiro das leides. Era a secretaria do candidato a vitima: - Seu Carlito, socorro! Seu Queiroz, me acuda!

Desta vez, o diagnostic° foi rapido: - Merda! A Carmelita meteu os cornos no marido...

- E justo corn o Mario Luis, bosta! Ainda bem que o malandro nao veio trabalhar hoje...

Como sempre, a solucao mais criativa foi a do Carlito.

Saiu da sala da diretoria gritando mais alto do que a corneadora e seu respectivo corneado: -0 midia esta demitido! 0 midia esta demitido!

A informacao acalmou o invasor. Pelo menos o rival tinha perdido o emprego... Depois de urn breve papo, o pistoleiro se retirou corn a honra lavada. Dali a pouco, a Carmelita saiu do banheiro e voltou ao trabalho, como se nada tivesse acontecido. Todos sacaram na hora que a cena nao tinha sido inedita...

Mais ou menos na mesma epoca, ocorreu urn outro instigante episOdio belico. Eu estava sozinho na agenda num fim de tarde. preparando uns textos para... porra, como eu trabalhava! De repente, sem maiores explicacOes, um desconhecido entrou na sala exibindo urn reluzente revolver. Enquanto ele vinha para o meu lado, tudo o que eu queria saber era: - 0 que foi que eu fiz?

Depois de uma e meia eternidades, o idiota parou na minha frente, abaixou o berro e perguntou coin a major calma: -0 Carlito esti?

- Quern e voce? - foi tudo o que eu consegui balbuciar.

Eu nao sabia se chorava de alivio ou jogava a maquina de escrever sobre a cabeca do coleguinha. Mudando de tom, ele voltou a exibir coin orgulho a sua an-na: - Nao 6 bacana? Acabei de comprar no Mappin! Diga para o Carlito que eu estive aqui, ta? Amanha eu ligo para ele.

Big mouth little money While stocks of basic staples such as beans and wheat are overflowing in the country's silos, millions go to bed hungry every night.

Hunger in Brazil is getting worse every year. Figures released by Conab, the State National Company of Food Supplies, indicate that per capita consumption of basic foodstuffs such as beans, rice, milk, wheat, corn, and soybean oil has been declining. The consumption of beans, for example, fell 7.5% from 1984 to 1992. In the same period, however, the population increased by almost 21.8%.

There is even more disparity in the statistics for wheat, the basic ingredient in bread and pasta. Despite the fact that the population of Brazil increased 13% over the past six years, the consumption of wheat in 1992 was down by 9% from 1987. The Minister of Agriculture estimates that this year's national consumption of the product has already suffered a decline of 4.8% as compared to its consumption during the same period in 1992.

The problem does not stem from declining production but from a fall in purchasing power. The Parana State Federation of Agriculture (Faep), for example, reports that the state's agricultural producers are having trouble clearing their inventories. Beans are stockpiling and now sell below the guaranteed price because of the lack of buyers.

The milk program, which distributes one cup of milk every day to every child in public schools and clinics, was created to address similar problems in the dairy industry - producers having a hard time selling and consumers having a hard time buying.

Beef, a product whose consumption was increasing in 1989 and 1990, has since undergone a fall of 6%, contrasted with a population increase of 5%. Annual per capita consumption, whichreached 19.2 kilos in 1990, shrank to 17.3 kilos in 1992. As a practical illustration: if the total amount of beef consumed last year were divided equally among the total population of

Brazil, each person would have received a serving of just over 43 grams (approximately 1.5 ounces) per day.

Given that the actual distribution is extremely uneven, this means that a substantial number of people never eat beef-and not because they're vegetarians.

In a dramatic show of the inequity, Dom Paulo Evaristo Arns, Sao Paulo's archbishop made a controversil declaration this last Holy Week. "If anybody can buy the product," he said, "I free them to eat meat the Holy Friday." For predominantly Catholic Brazilians, eating meat Sexta-Feira Santa is among one of the worst sins a faithful can commit.

Even basic products that experienced a rise in worldwide consumption over the last few years did not keep pace with the growth in population. This was the case with rice, corn, and soybean oil. The consumption of rice in Brazil grew 10.7% from 1986 to 1992, but at the same time the population grew 16%.

The consumption of corn rose by 63% from 1987 to 1992, but the growth in population was 100% greater 133% in six years. Soybean oil shows the same pattern as rice: the increase in worldwide consumption did not maintam the level of consumption per person-the increase was 7.4% from 1986 to 1992 and the population growth 16% for the same period.

Estimates for 1993 predict that national consumption of beans will be the same as it was in 1992. Consumption for wheat will fall.

Having ajob doesn'tnecesarilymeananescapefrom hunger. Those who earn a minimum wage have difficulty buying basic goods, and often the cost exceeds income. In the Distrito Federal, for example, the average worker earned $40 in January butneeded an average salary of $50 in order to buy the "basic basket" (a collection of products the government deems essential for survival) for only one person.

These numbers were released by the Departamento Intersindical de Estatistica e Estudos Socio-Econornicos (Dieese). The quantitiesused

by Dieese to determine basic necessities for the study were the same defined by Law Decree no. 399 in 1938 to determine the minimum wage.

The decree specifies thirteen basic products in quantities sufficient to meet normal nutritional requirements: meat, milk, beans, rice, flour, potatoes, tomatoes, bread, coffee, bananas, sugar, oil, and butter.

Salaried employees in Brazil pay higher income taxes than their American counterparts. Despite lower tax indices than in the United States, the income tax brackets and limits on deductions are more restricted in Brazil.

As a result, employees earning up to $20,000 a year pay four times the income tax in Brazil that they would owe in the United States. This is the conclusion of tax lawyer Ava Nicole Dranoff Borger, director of Borger Consultants.

A specialist in personal taxes, Nicole Borger summarized a study that compared the tax burdens in Brazil and the United States with respect to salaried employees. "The tax system in Brazil is unfair," she argues, " particularlywhen it comes to low wage earners."

According to Borger, the proportion of earnings paid in taxes varies inversely with income. Using the 1992 tax tables for bo th countries, she points out that an individual with a gross income of $10,000 in Brazil carries a tax

burden of 4.92%, while an individual with the same income in the United States is exempt from paying any tax.

For those with incomes up to $20,000, the tax burden in Brazil comes to almost four times that in the United States. Brazilians in this income bracket would have paid $2,751 in income, while individuals earnin the same

In order to purchase these goods in the quantities recommended bylaw, a family of two adults and two children would require a salary of $140 in Januar - four times the minimum wage. In January the minimum salary was raised to Cr$ 1.25 million, which the government announced as equivalent to $100, but which was worth only $70 by the time it was received by employees.

The minimum wage has been diminishing in real terms since 1960, and purchasing power continues to decline. In the short period from March 1986 to December 1992, the real minimum wage fell 66%. When implemented in 1938, the minimum wage enabled workers to meet basic needs, not only with respect to food, but also housing, clothing, transportation, health, and in other areas. To accomplish the same in 1993, the Dieese calculates that an individual would have had to earn Cr$ 6.5 million in January -5.2 times the minimum wage, including salary increases. amount in the United States would have paid only $720.

Brazil's employees experience tax relief only when salary levels rise. At the $200,000 dollar-per-year income level, the U.S. tax bite is larger. Brazilian taxpayers in this bracket pay$47,751 in taxes, while the U.S. taxpayer owes $51,750.

In all brackets from $10,000 to $150,000 in gross income, Brazil surpasses the United States in the amount of personal taxes collected. Only when income approaches $150,000 do payments made in the two countries become comparable.

"This demonstrates the inequity of the Brazilian tax system," says Nicole Borger, adding that the progressive tables need to be revised in order to avoid penalizing low wage earners.

An additional penalty in the Brazilian system is evident when considering that the U.S. taxpayer can count himself as a dependent when calculating deductions.

Pernambuco has found a seemingly inexhaustible source of dollars: the charm and sexual expertise of its women.

According to a recent article in Veja, Brazil's most read and respected weekly magazine, the city of Recife, Pernambuco, in northeastern Brazil, has become the country's tourist sex capital.

Every week, hundreds of foreign male tourists arrive in Recife in chartered flights. The mostly white tourists arrive with the money and desire to find the mythical tropical orgy with Brazilian women.

This view is shared by 45-year old Roberto Colombo, a barge operator of La go Maggiore, near Milan, Italy, who after his trip to Recife told Veja that "Brazilian women are the best in the world. Not only are they horny, but

they move in bed in a special way."

Twice a month, on Saturdays, the German tourist agency Medico Flugreisen brings to the capital of Pernambuco its now famous V& do Amor (Love Flight). This flight, with hundreds of middle-aged and older Europeans, is awaited at the airport by a large crowd of young women of all colors.

After the tourists disembark, the airport becomes an animated market, with the resulting deals for erotic vacations and dates to the best Recife hotels and praia da Boa Viagem (Good Journey beach). If no deals are made at the airport, the opportunities are abundant somewhere else. A Recife boate (nightclub) boasts that it has100 meninas (girls) ready for fun and pleasure.

As of early 1993, the V& do Amor had brought to Recife over 100,000 tourists. George Strasburg, director of Medico Flugreisen, noted that "about 30% of our passengers come to Recife in sparch of women." Such an understatement.

The Recife pavement princesses who cater to their tourist clients charge between $30 to $100 for the night. But

very few of them have a story to tell like the one by 23-year old Marcela Oliveira da Silva. This past Summer, da Silva met Lucas Anetti, an Italian farmer, at the Videoclipse bar. Two weeks later, with Anneti's help, she got a visa for Italy to go work for him as maid. She lived with Anetti for three months in Padua, Italy. The price: $2,000, which was paid before the trip started. "learned a lot of money and had a good time for three months," Mrs. da Silva commented while she prepared to embark to another adventure to Dusseldorf, Germany, at the request of a German banker.

For the vast majority of prostitutes in Recife, however, their stories are permeated with the fear of abuse and AIDS. The new Recife fame does not bother the local government officials.

"It does not matter if the tourist spends his dollars with prostitutes, at luxury hotels, or shopping centers. What matters is that they leave their dollars here," commented to Veja, Celso Steremberg, Pernambuco's Secretary of Tourism, adding: "After all, there are prostitutes all over the world." â&#x20AC;˘

Rapping Records The U.S. takes a look at the human rights in Brazil and it is not a pretty picture.

The United States government releaqed a recent report, leveling accusations of violations of a series of fundamental human rights in Brazil. Governmental authorities as well as members of the police forces are being accused of cooperating with criminals, and the justice system was considered to be obsolete, inefficient and tolerant towards criminals.

The fifteen-page text was released by the US. State Department, and covers the period between January and December of 1992. Citing names and dates of incidents and of individuals, the document gives no credit to governmental statements that prisoners at Carandiru (Sao Paulo state penitentiary, where there was a massacre last year of more than 100 prisoners) were armed; furthermore it criticizes Leonel Bnzola, governor of the State of Rio de Janeiro for "generalized violence" against minors and meninos da rua (street kids), particularly during the Eco 92 ecological conference m Rio. Those children who resisted the threats to move were later summarily incarcerated in improvised prisons in the nearby city of Niteroi. The report, probably one of the most complete texts dealing with Brazilian human rights issues in the last few years, indicates that a "culture of extermination" has ingrained itself within Brazilian society, and that

thousands of people are dying at the hands of fazendeiros, garimpeiros, and ptstoleiros, as well as atthe hands of police officers. People at the highest spheres of the judicial system are also suspect of protecting those very same police officers accused of systematic human rights abuses, or on many occasions they simply refuse to carry out any investigative ' procedures into those homicides.Most of the victims, according to the report, are minor children, youths or adults, suspected of being criminals Although murders top the list of crimes committed in Brazil, other types of human rights abuses are also prevalent sexual enslavement of minors in Amazonia, domestic violence against women, slave labor, the appalling conditions within Brazilian jails, murder and displacement of the Yanomami and Nhambiquara Indians by garimpeiros, attacks against Caboclos Nordestinos (inhabitants of the Northeastern provinces of Brazil) by so-called Paulistano (from Sao Paulo city) skinheads and even the murder of gays m Bahia State and other parts of Brazil by selfprodaimed Comandos de Gaga aos Gays (Gay Basher Commandos), among others.

Reaction to the reportby President Hamar Franco and the Ministry ofJustice was one of minimizing its importance, indicating simply that the report was only an "internal document" which used information originated from known sources within Brazil.

Brazil's disastrous performance during the World Cup in 1990, left a bitter taste in the mouths of many Brazilian soccer fans, and many admirers of Brazilian soccer worldwide.

A whole troupe of disenchanted young, promising players have traded their native Brazilian turf for the seemingly alluring soccer fields of old Europe.

Every well-known craque (ace) such as Taffarel, Luis Henrique, Bebeto, Rai, Casagrande, Careca, Mauro Silva, among others, has not wound up in a top rated European team, however; in fact, most have ended up in secondrate regional teams. Even so, most have been able to muster the best level of Brazilian soccer talent for the world to see.

The most visible example is 28year-old headliner Bebeto, previously playing with the Vasco de Gama team in Brazil; he was contracted out in mid1992 by the Deportivo La Coruna soccer team in northeastern Spain. A mediocre team, La Coruna's main goal for the season was not to fall into the second division. But Bebeto's 21 season goals have catapulted the team to second place in the Spanish soccer championship, a position they had not attained since 1950.

Bebeto, whose contract was purchased for the sum of $2 million, receives an annual salary of $700,000.

And the investment has paid handsomely for Club La Coruna: membership has skyrocketed from 6,000 to 22,000 in the last few months alone.

Bebeto is idolized by La Coruna's 250,000 citizens; taxi drivers refuse to charge him fare, restaurant owners treat him to meals. They've nicknamed him "The Bomber" and "Saint Bebetirio" Another successful craque, Luis Henrique, previously played for Pahneiras and is currently with Mo-

Albert Grimaldi is one of his most devoted fans. And like La Cortina in Spain, Monaco is currently at the top of the French league, sharing first place with Olympique of Marseille.

Although most Brazilian players don't complain about their salaries, they are acutely aware of how undervalued many of their colleagues are; in general terms, first-rate Brazilian players only earn about 20% of what an average European player of the same category gets. This, in spite of the fact that on the playing field the craques are just as good - if not better - than many of their European counterparts.

For example, Brazil's most outstanding player, Rai, was sold recently by the Sao Paulo soccer team to Saint Germain, a Parisian team, for the sum of $2.7 million. He had previously refused offers from other non-distinct European teams because of their limited exposure.

But not all the stories are happy ones. For example, Antonio Carlos, previously playing with the Sao Paulo team, went over to Albacete, a minor team in the Spanish division. The team was unable to advance in its division, despite his efforts and he returned to Brazil, disillusioned, to play with Palmeiras. Antonio Carlos feels he now carries a minor European "blotch" in his otherwise impeccable professional record as a player.

Although many Brazilian teams go to the extreme of financially overextending themselves to try to keep their top craques, the European "attraction" continues to captivate many a player.

Furthermore, Italy, which u sed to have one of the highest rates of foreign players, has cracked down and limited those numbers to only two foreign players per team. Most are from Argentina, where a substantial portion of the population is from Italian extraction.

This will not affect players previously contracted by Italian teams; but it will limit the number of foreign players in the field at any given time to only three. Other countries, such as France, have similar laws as well. It affects them less, however, because they have a lower percentage of foreign players.

Many players such as Casagrande (Torino), Careca (Napoli), Julio Cesar (Juventus) and Jorginho (Bayern) are solidly placed within their respective leagues, and they do not forsee any quick retreat to Brazil in the near future.

Many observers are also rumoring the forthcoming demise of the Brazilian soccer "miracle"; they mention the five World Cups that Brazil has thrown out the window since 1974. But teams such as Sao Paulo are constantly canvassing the countryside of Brazil, from North to South, sP2rching for fresh young talent. Trainer Tele Santana recently stated: "Even if we were only able to bring up two amateurs into professional status each year, our investment would have been worth the trouble". But one truth still remains unchallenged: Brazil continues to be a major exporter of the better of its human talent, soccer or otherwise, as these outstanding craques are showing the world. â&#x20AC;˘

Leila was - and is - the symbol f a period of time (the 60's), and a place (Brazil) in which any deviation from social and political norms imposed by a heavy handed military dictatorship could have severe consequences: loss of a job, jail, exile or even something worse.

Innovative, bold and outright irreverent, Leila shook the foundations of a nation during a time in which only very few would dare take unnecessary risks:whetherprotectingmffitantsfrom the political police, or shockin crowds on the beach by wearing bikinis during an advanced pregnancy - when this behavior was still considered offensive - nothing was too outrageous or outlandish for Leila.

By the time of her untimely death at age 27 in 1972, Leila left a legacy in the Brazilian cinema, theater, television and advertising industries. Her manner of speech, her frank and freshly innovative style, which sometimeswas brash and impudent, shook the conventional "suit-and-tie" approach of Brazilian journalism prevalent during

Just Danilo Danilo Azevedo's art releases the imagination and frees the spirit of .both the artist and the viewer. Last year, Los Angeles was treated to a showing of his works in Marina del Rey. Let's hope it's not too long before we get another look.

Mingling among the works of other painters, Azevedo's own art, signed simply "Danilo," sends messages of color into the room. In a style reminiscent of Picasso, Rivera, Chagall, and Portinari, his rainbow of frames depict an eclectic roster of subjects: Father's Day and A lawyer, an opera Mother's Day, Mother singer, a journalist, a trav- Teresa, Pavarotti singing La eler, a painter - Danilo Azevedo is all these things.

But standing in front of one of his canvases, you might wonder whether he is also a magician.

Color is Danilo's principal language, and listening to him speak, you begin to feel as alive as his paintings, as if somehow Azevedo's love of life - its Boheme, Tina Turner, and energy, celebration and a classic figure from Greek mystery - has the power to mythology.

Born in Recife in 1923, transform you into one of Azevedo has been painting his images.

Azevedo lives in a pri- in the United States for 32

years, but his images and inspiration are rooted in the life of northeastern Brazil.

"Because the painting, the art, is inside the person," he says. "I can go to Senegal, I can go to Alaska, I can go to Iceland, but the

color comes from my heart.

The color, the idea - the roots. You're never free from your roots. Never." talent Azevedo's springs from a family tradition of creativity and support. Two charcoal drawings by his mother grace one wall of his living room, quiet and delicately detailed. His father was a supreme court judge in the state of Alagoas. "A little square, but a good judge," says Azevedo. "Yes or no, never in between, never 'playing the violin.' " Both urged him to take up painting as a career.

Azevedo speaks of his grandmother as one of his most important influences.

"She was very advanced.

My grandmother was born for the 21st century." Upon giving Azevedo a set of canvases and oils when he was 13 years old, she instructed him, "Don't copy!

Use your brain. Don't look in magazines. Use your imagination."

This advice was taken to heart. In works such as Olodum, The Orange Market, The Chicken Market, The Fish Market, The Crab Seller, and Carnaval Time: Wild Party, Danilo's canvases turn daily aspects of life into something unusual.

The hand of the crab seller is itself a claw. A mermaid is one of the items in the fish market.

Whimsy characterizes the painter's outlook as well as his style. Of Mercado de Galinhas, he says, "When I painted that picture, every chicken became a friend of mine. This silver one is Bernice," he explains, pointing out a bird at the lower left corner. "This one is Christina. This is Edna."

Azevedo works from 9 to 5 in the travel department of the Brazilian Consulate, devoting late evenings to his art. "Sometimes I paint from nine until midnight, one o'clock, two o'clock. I enjoy it."

With mischief he adds, "I like talking with the people."

One of Azevedo's most mysterious canvases is entitled, The Lady Comes from the Sea. It depicts a woman emerging from the water carrying a doll as people stand nearby, expectantly and happily witnessing what seems to be a longawaited return.

When asked, "Why does she have a doll?"

"I don't know," he answers. "She never told me." â&#x20AC;˘

Glub, Globing the World Selling suds to the planet? Brazil's Rede Globo has been doing this in 67 countries.

And now the world's 4th biggest network is going one step ahead, selling a new formula.

Rede Globo has become synonymous with the world success; such has been Globo's impact upon other TV networks worldwide, through the export of many of their most successful local Brazilian soap operas.

export Escrava Isaura (Isaura the Slave), starring Lucila Santos and already commercialized in 67 different countries, Globo rapidly accelerated its pace by distributing its novelas to some 120 countries all over the world.

Just last year alone, Rede Globo netted a $120 million profit over a $600 million investment, which allowed Globo International, its exporting division, to invest around $6 million in program productions for the overseas market.

And many of these soaps have carried with them the same level of success that they have enjoyed within the Brazilian market. Globo, household name in Brazil, is now also well known on all the continents except Antarctica; actors and actresses such as Rubens de Falco, Lucila Santos and Regina Duarte, are known and admired in countries thousands of miles from Brazil, among them, Sweden, Indonesia and even China.

Soaps such as Dancin' Days, Baila Comigo" (Dance with Me), and "Escrava Isaura" have propelled both the network and the artists it employs into international stardom.

Rede Globo had been always ahead of the competition within Brazil, due in part to its aggressive pro-

gramming structure. This included importing certain programming formats which had proven to be highly successful in other countries. Most were then adapted to suit the characteristics and tastes of the Brazilian market. "Domingdo do Faustao", a game and prizes type program aired every Sunday, patterned after the American game show format, and has proven to be extremely successful and profitable for Rede Globo in Brazil.

One year ago, Rede Globo introduced a new type of program format, locally developed and produced. The program called Voce Decide (You Decide), became an instant success with the Brazilian public. Local TV viewers raved about the idea of being able to call in during the airing. Depending upon the number of resulting calls, one of two possible pre-taped endings would be aired by program's end.

Interspaced between scenes, live interviews and TV viewers opinion's are simultaneously broadcast at several locations, mostly public plazas, where throngs of people gather to watch the mini soap opera unfold, beamed down to them from a portable giant screen located up above; the numbers for and against a given

TV finale flash interminently on the huge screen and are constantly tallied during the process.

In one of the episodes, for example, a doctor with a very sick wife had to decide whether to stay with her in Brazil, thus missing a once in a life time chance to present his work in a symposium in Paris.

Voce Decide has become now Globo's newest export item. Globo exports the program's format as a merchandiseable item. Eleven countries - Spain, Germany and Sweden among them- have already purchased the rights to the program, and several more are lining up negotiations as well.

Voce Decide has given Globo one added advantage: it is aired during prime time TV both in Brazil and overseas. Most of its other soaps that are aired overseas, particularly in first world countries, are shown during low viewer exposure time, that is

during morning or afternoon schedules.

Through the package, the purchaser gains the rights to copy the program's concept, tape their own version, and use the Brazilian scripts, either in the original or in a modified format.

Local actors are used, and thus no dubbing is needed. Globo does not have to share its profits with actors or producers, as is the case with the soaps produced for export.

The arrangement is also profitable for the purchasing countries; with average production costs for a soap opera hovering between 150 and 200 thousand dollars per chapter, Globo has been able - due to its polished production teams - to bring production costs down to an acceptable 40 to 120 thousand dollars per chapter.

Globo's profits in the larger world TV market is almost assured. Each

chapter in Italy and Germany nets Globo $9,000 and $7,000, respectively, although poorer countries with a smaller number of TV units, such as Nicaragua and Honduras, pay only $150 for the same chapter. Costs are calculated on the basis of the number of TV units per country, an accepted international standard.

In addition, Globo, the world's fourth largest TV network after the three American networks, has entered into joint pro ductions with other countries, mostly European.

Portugal, Spain and Switzerland have co-hosted soap productions with Globo, thereby giving it a solid foothold in an ever-shrinking European market which is virtually locking itself out from foreign imports.

Aside from reducing overall production costs, these joint projects highlight Globo's other individual projects, thereby bringing its already well-known international corporate profile even more into the spotlight. â&#x20AC;˘

Survivin in the U.S. Zoravia Bettiol, an artist just transplanted from Brazil, speaks firsthand about her culture shock and strategies to keep herself alive in a socalled civilized country.

I left the good things of the 3rd World for the problems of the 1st and here I am as a Californian Shiva Goddess, of the North American Consumer Occidental Society, at the end of the 20th Century.

It's my fifth month living in the charming and beautiful San Francisco.

I'm having the natural (usual?) culture shock, but I'm trying to understand the wisdom of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans with the help of Iemanja (the goddess of the water in Afro-Brazilian Candomble) and with the help of many good friends I'm making here.

I arriVed here on a blue Zeppelin with an excess luggage of three tons of ideas and projects I would like to do. But... at this, moment, I'm like Leonardo da Vinci, the precursor to artistic marketing and public relations when he wrote to the Sforzza duke asking for support of his projects. That's what I need right now.

There is no lack of projects, mostly exhibitions that I curated in Brazil and that I would like to see having a run over here. Shows like America:Crossroads of the Lost Time, presented in Sao Paulo, with the participation of 42 APAP (Professional Association of Plastic Artists from Sao Paulo) artists.

Another is Protect the Life, a paintingtextile ecological installation done by six artists of the Rio Grande do Sul state. It has been presented in Porto Alegre during Rio's Eco 92 and also in the station Se of the Sao Paulo subway system. Another exhibition begging to be shown would be an exchange of American fiber artists and their CGTC (Gaucho Center of Contemporary Tapestry of Porto Alegre).

Since arriving, I have begun the acrylic painting series Imaginary Portraits, and have had the chance to present this series, along with tapestries and woodcuts brought from Brazil, in a exhibition at the City Hall of Menlo Park.

But... the witches of the McCarthy period and the Middle Ages appeared in the Art Commission of the City Hall and they censored Aphrodite of the Olympic Gods series, along with Lust of the Seven Sin series.

The commission believes that sex and nudity are ugly and dangerous. Maybe people like this shouldn't even look at a child. After all, a child is a result of a sexual act. Nor should they look a flower, the sexual organ of a plant.

In 38 years of working with fine arts and having exhibited solo and with others in 22 countries, this experience was a first for me. Aren't we in a democratic country? Aren't we supposed to respect the First Amendment of the United States Constitution and the XIX Amendment of the Declaration of the Rights of Man, both of which protect the freedom of expression of the citizen?

Overdose ready to take the U.S.

Teaching the U.S. to rock They are Brazilians but they do Thrash Metal, always in English, and with a vengeance. If you haven't heard about them yet, you are not very hip or you haven't been reading your rock magazines attentively enough.

Brazil has a new

export into the global artistic market. First it was Joao Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim; later MPB and Xuxa. Now, it's Thrash Metal! And the world is listening. Although some Brazilian rock groups notably Legiao Urbana have had some moderate success at a regional level in the past, it was a group of young Mineiro rockers curiously named Sepultura (Grave) , who first gained international acclaim and recognition in the heavy metal rock world. Now two other Brazilian rock bands are closely following on Sepultura's footsteps, and they may in due time bury Sepultura as well.

The first of these two bands is Overdose, which like Sepultura also hail from the state of Minas Gerais. In fact, at their inception in the early 80's, Overdose and Sepultura put out a split album titled Seculo XX/Bestial Devastation. The album has since become a very sought after classic. A subsequent album You're really Big, pushed them into the forefront of rock music both in Brazil and overseas; the album received rave critical as well as popular acclaim.

For instance, in 1991, United Kingdom's Metal Forces magazine stated: "...this album shows the group to be easily the most musically proficient metal outfit in all of Brazil, surpassing even Sepultura in terms of playing ability..." Another earlier album, Addicted to Reality had received stunning reviews in Scream a magazine from Norway, Decibels Storm (France), Rip (USA) and Metal Hammer (Germany). Even Japan has had a taste of these outstanding metal musicians, as evidenced in Burn Magazine, and their review of Overdose's music. The band is currently composed of: B.Z. on vocals, Fernando Pazzini on bass guitar, Andre Marcio on drums, Sergio Cichovicz on guitar and a virtuoso named Claudio David on lead guitar.

In fact Metal Forces magazine has praised Claudio as "one who truly ranks as one of the best musicians to come out of the Brazilian metal scene", a tremendous compliment indeed, considering this magazine's influencq upon, and knowledge about heavy metal bands and musicianship.

During most of last year, Overdose continued to receive praise from specialized metal magazines in Brazil and overseas like Argentina's Metal and in mainstream newspapers such as Portugal's Ditirto Popular. They played to sold-out audiences in Sao Paulo, Rio, Porto Alegre, and Buenos Aires, while simultaneously promoting their newest release Circus of Death.

The group so far has received very positive feedback about their music breaking into the American metal scene here in Los Angeles, and contacts have already been established with local

Overdose sample rock producers for a probable U.S. tour for late 93 or early 94, starting out from the Los Angeles area, rock capital of the world.

This, if anything, must mean that these metal monsters must have the right stuff! But noteworthy as well is the fact that, aside from the sheer musical prodigy of Claudio's guitar and of B.Z.'s powerful vocals, Overdose is a band that puts forward meaningful social messages (always in English) in a sophisticated manner, which somewhat differentiates them from other heavy metal bands.

Curiously enough, their Brazilian promoter Jaisson Tett° promotes also another outstanding Brazilian rock band, the 666. These kids come from Brazil's southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul. They are gauchos, naturally. The band as well as Taft° are from the city of Porto Alegre.

The five-piece band has a different twist: the lead singer is a female. Aline Yell carries some very powerful vocals, backed by Gabriel Alameda (Bass), Eded (Drums), Paul Ze Six (Guitar), and Carl Neni Franzem also on guitar.

On the wings of Aline's voice, this band's meteoric rise to fame has brought them the opportunity to play before American audiences in Los Angeles. They recently participated in the Rock Marathon Festival, where they virtually stole the show with their super-rocker track The Price of the Lie". Following their upcoming American tour, they plan to return to the recording studios in Brazil to finish off their next album and a video clip.

Says Aline: "We have had two (American) recording studios hear our stuff, and want our contracts; however, first we want to play L.A. We will close the contracts later."

My wife Ana Maria and I were trying to find our way to our room, strolling carefully on the catwalks, when the attack occurred. Out of the blue, or more precisely, out of the surrounding trees, a little monkey jumped on my shoulder and started to drink the capuacu juice from the goblet I had received at the reception as a welcome beverage. That would be only one of many surprises the Arian Jungle Tower Hotel would offer during our three days in the Brazilian jungle. We had just arrived from Manaus after a four-hour, uneventful boat trip, and we were realizing very quickly that all we had read about the area wouldn't be enough to prepare us for what was coming.

In the next few hours and days, we would become acquainted with and learn to love a new world of friendly animal and people faces, plenty of water, unknown and intriguing animal sounds; and find that we did not miss some daily trappings we had considered indispensable: the newspaper, air conditioning, TV, and hot water. We would learn new words such as carapand (mosquito - something almost nonexistent in this area of the Amazon), banzeiro (the river's wave), cupuacu e tucumd (both fruits of the area) and would meet and mingle with the area's natives, the caboclos, and their families.

Upstream on the Rio Negro, whose dark waters remind you of Coca-Cola, the Arian hotel is situated on the margins of the Arian tributary that got its denomination from the Arian tribe. Although not a household name yet - the little refuge among the trees has been visited in the eight years of its existence by international personalities such as German chancellor Helmut Kohl, American singer John Denver, and Israel's minister of Development. Their visits are remembered and framed in souvenirs hanging on the commissary walls.

Their words and those of hundreds of others are a testimony to the times they had there. Like these from Don W., Colonel of the USAF: "The staff of the Arian Tower has made my visit outstanding. I now have a true sense of what the Amazon Region is all about. Someone from La Loma, California, intrigued like us by the resident monkeys, wrote: "We had a wonderful time. Very educational and superbly beautiful. The staff is anxious to please and very warm. I'm going to return, and then I'll bite the monkey." The expression "dream come true" is spelled out repeatedly in French, Italian, German. Seemingly inspired by Dante's Divine Comedy, an Italian wrote: "Lascio con nostalgia questo Paradiso."

Naturally, you can go to Ariail and exercise the option of doing nothing more than inhaling the purest air on earth, savoring the colors and smells of birds, plants and fruits, and pigging out on exquisitely prepared diverse local fishes (piracucu,tambaqui) every day. You certainly could be happy with this. Walking through the green passarelas linking the three apai tinent towers with a fourth on the way, climbing the Blue Sky Tower, the tallest in the Amazon forest, according to the Arian staff, or visiting Tarzan's house, and living your childhood dream of being in the world's highest house on the branches of a tall tree.

Do all this, however, and you still will be missing canoe trips through the igarapes (narrow channels) and igapos (flooded forest during the rain season), getting stuck in the can arana (the thick and tall water grass that can surprise you in any corner), the spectacle of the aruand fish jumping five feet from the water to eat fruits from the trees, the forest treks looking for apuls (tree-killer vines) and the water vines called "jungle mineral water" by the guides.

Arian. divides its guests among its guides. The camaraderie that is born during the nightly (looking for caimans) and daily excursions is cemented at meal times, when guests in large communal tables gather around the guides in the company of a cornucoVisiting Ca boclos pia of the Amazon exuberance. A little eccentric, but thoroughly friendly, chef Augustinho commands the kitchen with electricity and gusto." A chef has to have love for the kitchen," he says, adding: "He has to prove everything. Only someone who knows what he's doing can give orders."

Part sorcerer and part natural pharmacist, Augustinho is always on the lookout to help a traveler. For colds and headaches, he says he has an infallible recipe, using garlic, pepper, lemon and a blanket to produce an unforgettable sweating experience. As for diarrhea, he guarantees a 15-minute cure with a whole lemon pressed on a glass together with water and corn or manioc starch.

To be effective the potion has to be taken in one gulp.

The brain-child of Dr. Francisco Ritta Bernardino, a lawyer and nature lover, the idea of Arian was born during a conversation with French explorer Jacques Cousteau. We can forgive but we will never forget Zeze Mota for having invaded the commissary with Zequinha the day of our departure and stealing the eggs and fruit we had set aside for breakfast.

As for Catarina, the coati, we ask forgiveness from manager Washington and his aide Taylor, beg-

ging them to spare her the rod after the substantial damage she caused by pulling the straw from under the roof in our room.

Brazilian Sergio do Lago was the recipient of a Honorable Mention at the 34th Annual International Cindy Competition, promoted by the Association of Visual Communicators.

The mention was for Painting the Unconscious, a video about Brazilian plastic artist Clerio DeMoraes, his surrealistic paintings, his creative process and his interaction with his clients at the Exceptional Children'sFoundation Art Center, in L.A., where he is assistant art director.
