Brazil has lost one of its loudest voices and best examples fordemocracy and morality in politics. After the death of Congressman Ulysses Guimaraes, 76, life will not be the same in the country he served in public life, for almost six decades. What's going to be of the PMDB, the party he used to lead so competently? Many agree that without his unifying presence, the party will have a tough, tough time.
Having been one of the leaders of the movement to impeach Collor de Mello, he was busy advising new president Itamar Franco, and helping him rorin his cabinet. His wit, and integrity are going to be sorely missed. He has gone without having a chance to see fructify all his work to transform Brazil into a Parliamentary regime. Ulysses wanted to be and had a good chance to be - the first Premier in such a new government. We are dedicating our cover, however, to another third age monument of Brazil, now octogenarian Jorge Amado. Dividing his time be-

tween Bahia and Paris, Amado didn't lose a scintilla of his quickdraw, street-wise smartness. He is still very active, writing, giving interviews, trying to make life better for his fellow humans. He continues to be an inspiration and a more than alive proof that youth you carry inside you. Talking about death, he says, "I am not really afraid. But I have no desire to die. I like life very much." Here's to life, music, literature, and all those goodies we have our pages filled with. Ate bem breve. R.M.

Even the services of Evangelical Ivo Carraro, a paranormal seer, were used in the fruitless effort of the Brazilian authorities to find the body of congressman Ulysses Guimaraes. Carraro told Police he had seen in a dream where in the sea was the body of Ulysses. His helicopter disappeared, under heavy rain, October 12, when the PMDB deputy, together with his wife and ex-senator Severo Gomes and wife, were coming back from Rio to Sao Paulo. Ulysses Guimardes body was the only one not found. The authorities think it may have sunk with the chopper carcass. He was elected to the Congress for the first time in 1956. Since then, he was
reelected 11 times. He has been called Mr. Diretas, a reference to his firm defense of an amendment to the Constitution that would have established direct elections for president in 1984. Twice, in 1984 and 1989, he tried unsuccessfully to be elected president. The congressman was one of the leading characters in the fight that ended up taking Collor de Mello out of the presidency. He has defended the Parliamentary system for Brazil and was prepared to be a candidate as Prime Minister. Dead at age of 76, with 60 years dedicated to politics, Ulysses Guimardes has been the chairman of the House of Representatives, and the Minister of Industry and Commerce.

COVER beings were listening to him intently. His words were precise; the images he was building were distinct. He punctuated his narrative with food recipes, description of odors, noises, feelings, people. Exactly as in his books. He didn't notice my presence. When he finished his story, the oneiric d reams dissipated themselves. "Were you talking to yourcharacters?", I asked. "I was. Have you seen them?" "Yes. They looked like real people." "In a romance, there is no difference between people and characters." I saw a shelf full of books. "Can I look at them?", I asked. "Sure." He got up, went to the shelf and took some books. "They are poems," he said. "My brother filled them up with nota tions. You can take them with you." I picked up the books. In all of them, the covers were crowded with handwritten, truncated letters: "Varias poezias, compostas pello Famozo Doctor e insigne poeta do nosso seculo Greg6rio de Mattos e Guerra, juntos neste volume... Cidade Da Bahia Anno-1711". ("Several poems, composed by Famous Doctor and renowned poet of our century Gregorio de Mattos e Guerra, together in this volume... Bahia City Year- 1771." "I hope they can be helpful to you," he said. I asked the writer if many people looked for him asking to be taught how to write. "These things you cannot teach, my daughter. Everyone has to learn by himself. What I can say is that the person has to have a lot of dedication to his work." "Is this enough?" "No. You have to have love for people, for the place you were born. We have to give our blood. Let's go now." "Where to?" "Let's eat a vatapii because nobody can live on air." This meeting is a fiction, that is, it is a lie and it is the truth. Jorge never gave me, and gave symbolically, the books that James Amado published with the Gregorian poetry. I worked with the team of Nelson Pereira dos Santos during the filming of TendadosMilagres, in Salvador, anc I had the chance to observe Jorge Amado, although not from very close. Thanks to one of these mysterious coincidences, 14 years later I published my first romance, Boca do Inferno, which takes place is in Bahia. As in the romances of Jorge Amado, mine told a story structured with Dickensian or Flaubertian techniques, that Jorge certainly helped me to ac-

"whores, and bums", the urban or rural world, but always Brazilian. Jorge Amado is a pure fiction writer who reveals the habits and feelings of his characters throughaction. He never allows himself to be entrapped by the ambush of erudition, he teaches without pontificating, he reveals without destroying the mystery, he includes beliefs and magic without ignoring the social realism side. His world is broad. Almost everything fits into it. He is a candid narrator generous towards the poor, who deifies and beautifies women, and understands the frailty of men. He writes about a world he knows about, that is inside and around him. His language reflects this intimacy with the people. He shows the way his people talk, open air market owners and teachers, political colonels and harlots. A language that everybody understands. His characters visit him; they object to or they give thanks for their own literary appearances; they decide, they also exist physically. They are oneiric beings, and perhaps due to this they are more human than weare, because they have the coherence we don't have. They can consist of only essential elements, or from pieces, like the bench I saw in his garden. We all know how important is Jorge Amado for us, individually or as a nation; how much he narrowed the cultural and linguistic ties that unite us; how much he reveals about our identity, registering forever traits of our way of being. His gift to me can be symbolized by an open door and a collection of Gregorio de Mattos' poems.

Dear Editor Few weeks ago, I was trying to get some information on exporting and importing goods to and from Brazil, when it occurred to me that I should ,igive the Brazilian civil servants a call. It's unbelievable that either in Brazil or in the United States, the Brazilian civil servants treat and attend the demands and needs of the general public iI•1n such an impolite way. The four times had to talk to the Brazilian Consulate Los Angeles, I was treated in such a Idiscourteous way, that it made me feel was back in Brazil, where the meaning of the word respect is very often igNnored by civil servants, when dealing 147ith the general public. Thank you! .. Daniel Ledur Torrance, CA Dear Editor I! Please, send me a subscription for one year. The Brazilian Festival at the iAfrican Marketplace was really wonderful. Let's to it again next year. Thanks to all involved.

Birthday- Itamar Augusto Cautiero Franco was born June 28,1930, at some point • Pure.flax ow of the Atlantic Ocean between Salvador and Rio. But he is Mineiro by heart and formation. Gifts - No Hermes ties. Despite their quality, they remind us of the luxurious Pierre Cardin jeans times when Itamar was vice-president. No 12-year-old Logan whiskey. Itamar og4TINvhi$ is very nationalist. Don't think about Cuban cigars. Parliament is his favorite cigarette. And don't play with the idea with giving him a jet-ski, a yacht, or a supersonic jet. The best gift would probably be a simple book, as the ones by Campari (with or without lemon) Mineiro Guimardes Rosa. Style - The heavy jacket a la Sarney is coming back. No more designer suits. No eccentricities like pomade on the hair. There is nothing against toupees. Telephone - In Itamar's republic it is not chic to spend hours on the phone. Avoid Porto wine giving interviews in a foreign language over the phone. People should speak Portuguese well. This is the only exhi itionism allowed. Religion - Mystical Paulo Coelho and his followers, beware! Itamar's Brazil is Catholic. But some superstitions are still in, such as the fazer figa (gesture with the thumb between the fingers for luck), knock three times on wood to exorcise Juiz de Fora (Minas Gerais) bad luck, and not changing shoes on election day. No seers or paranormals. Run away from numerologists and double letters. Colors - Brazil now is uncollored. But there is more than black and white. Purple naturally is out, as well as olive green and golden yellow. Use light blue, gray, Classical music, jazz, and MPB pastel tones. Temperament- No more eloquent, brusque, heroic attitudes. This is time to talk softly, close to the ear of the listener. It's a light era, far from the you hit, you get it". Foul language, and pounding the table are out. Listen to Gregorian chants to relax. Walking around the lake Music - Leandro and Leonardo, Chitdozinho and XororO, and all sertanejos are completely off the musical menu. Avoid Pharaonic projects in your garden. If you like fish, buy a little aquarium. Literature - Guimardes Rosa is a sure bet. In romance, Intimate reunions Gabriel Garcia Marquez is a must. Try to get away from Sidney Sheldon. Names - They have to be elegant. Avoid compound names as Pedro Henrique, Jose Carlos, Paulo Cesar. Run away from nicknames and abbreviations as PPs, PCs, FCs. As last resource give your son your own name and call him Jr. Tourism - Canapi and neighborhood are out. Alagoas beaches are "polluted". Passenger market is shrinking.
Cheap, Cheap Thanks to fast food, Brazilians can have a light lunch for one dollar. Imported from the US, the idea has been naturalized.
Billions of passengers by km, in domestic flights
FERNANDA DOMINGUES
Do cry for me, Argentina Facing their worst crisis ever, Brazilian air companies are hoping Argentineans will be lured to our attractions. REGINA CARDEAL The domestic situation for the Brazilian air companies is disheartening. The demand for tickets this year will be at least 40% less than in 1991. Nobody is expecting any profit before 1993. The promotional tariffs introduced in the low season were extended to the July and August vacations, and are going to be in, up to December. ° Despite all this and a reduction of 30% in the availability of seats, the number of passengers in the first eight months of the year shrunk 34% compared with equal period in 1991. To face their worst crisis ever, these companies are trying to be creative. One such stratagem is to find overseas the passengers who cannot be found in Brazil-. Many are betting in Argentina's economy. yang has the most ambitious plan. The company is going to have 150 extra flights between now and -March 1993, linking Buenos Aires to the capitals of the Brazilian Northeast. The number of weekly flights is going up from three to ten. The decision, says the sales director of yang, Ottorino Bruno, 60, follows the program that \Twig started in September to draw Argentines, and that generated a good demand. That initiative had the cooperation of Embratur, the state Tourism agency and governments of the Northeast. Varig has also planned 58 extra flights between Buenos Aires and Florianopolis (Santa Catarina) from December to March; 40 extra flights between the Argentinean capital and Rio; and another 19 between Buenos Aires and Miami. Argentina represents 4.6% of the company's earnings. Vasp, for which Argentina represents 6% of the income, according to commercial director Jose Wagner Ferreira, 35, started at the end of October three weekly flights from Buenos Aires to the Northeast. Transbrasil is also coveting this market, says its public relations Jorge Honorio, 47. The company, say HonOrio, has 26'70 of its income from overseas. Ferreira, from Vasp, has his doubts about the success of the experience. The round trip tickets of around $360 to $380 from Buenos Aires to the Northeast, according to him, are not very profitable. Opening a res tauran t in Brazil these days is something of the past. At least if we are talking about a traditional restaurant. The majority of the investors, when they dream with a place to eat this place has a shape of a fast food site. There were around 1220 fast food restaurants in the country, last year. According to the Franchising Brazilian Association (ABF), this numbershould grow 30% in 1992. In 1991, these restaurants brought $847 million. Another idea imported from the United States is helping to promote the fast food fever: the food malls. The Iguatemi shopping mall in Sao Paulo for example has already its imitation of the American food plaza. And Eldorado, another big shopping center, is ready to do the same. In these food squares you can find from a simple hamburger to a sophisticated shrimp plate. At Saito, a green gnocchi with ricotta, mushroom, ham and grated pistachio, takes two minutes to get ready. The consumer still has the right to getgrated cheese and a slice of Italian bread. "Sometimes, the client is still paying and the plate is ready," says manager Ed leuza Nunes da Silva, 30. Another advantage of the fast food is the price. By not offering the service of waiters, these restaurants are able to charge around $2 fora reasonable meal, as it happens at PizzPria Monte Verde, where a spaghetti costs $2.20. Those who are less hungry can eat a crepe for half this price at Chaterelle. The fast food market should continue attracting new investors, similar to those who are now in business. People like the Spanish woman who sells food from Bahia, a business manager who makes Chinese chicken, and a couple of lawyers who decided to exchange their law office for a hot dog stand. For the majority, the entrance door is through franchising. Three years ago, the international names dominated. Now, they are a minority. McDonald's, however, continues to be the champion, having eaten $165 million, in Brazilian currency, last year. •

PROFILE
Captain Yamashita This California native, on a tenyear trip do Brazil, has taken her ship to unsuspected places, fulfilling the dreams of many of us. Now, she is telling the world her adventures. FRANCINE ALEXANDER
What do an American college student, Brazil, Japanese immigration, and Thomas J. Watson, the founder of IBM, have in common? If you think it sounds like the perfect set up for a book by Karen Tei Yamashita, you're right. It all started with this question: "If you had a year with enough money to support yourself and had to travel outside the United States, where would you go and what would you do?" This is the question asked by the Thomas J. Watson Fellowship of promising students from American liberal arts colleges. WhenYamashita started reading about Japanese immigration to Brazil, she had her answer. "I had been in Japan for about a year and a half," she says, "and I knew I didn't want to go back to Japan. I wanted to find a way to go south." After a month-and-a-half crash course in Portuguese from UCLA / Santa Barbara, Yamashita was off to Brazil. "I can't say that I could speak when I went to Brazil," she says, "but I had Japanese conversationally. So the first month I was there, since I was pretty much in the Japanese community, I used my Japanese." Yamashita ended up living in Brazil for almost ten years, traveling around Sao Paulo and Parana. "I did research for almost a year," she says. "And then I just stayed. In the meantime I got married to a Brazilian, and both my kids were born there." In 1984, Yamashita returned to the United States with the first draft of a historic novel about Japanese immigration to Brazil. "I rewrote it again when I got back," she says, "but I was not happy with it. At that point I decided to put it aside. And then I wrote The Arc." Through the Arc of the Rain Forest, Yamashita's first published novel, was released by Coffee House Press in 1990. It is an eclectic and unexpected "vision of Brazil" drawn from Yamashita's years in the country and her own intelligent sense of wit and whimsy. "It's set in Sao Paulo, in the North of Brazil, on the coast—probably somewhere outside Recife—and it's set in the forest," she says, describing a book that is difficult to describe. "And there's a fun-load of characters in it, including a Japanese, a Brazilian couple from Sao Paulo, a guy from the Northeast, and an American."
Yamashita's second book, Brazil-Maru, published by Coffee House in 1992, is the reworked manuscript she brought back from Brazil, perhaps Yamashita's best answer to Thomas J. Watson's question. "Brazil-Maru is essentially the name of a ship," says Yamashita, "but it has other kinds of meanings." The story follows the lives and experiences of a small group of Japanese who settle in the northwestern corner of the state of Sao Paulo, beginning with their immigration in 1925 and continuing to the present. "It's certainly not a history of all Japanese immigration to Japan," says Yamashita of Brazil-Maru, "which is very vast. But it's a microcosm, and I think it's very telling about immigration to that country and about Japanese immigration. But it's a very select vision of it." Since returning to Los Angeles with her family in 1984, Yamashita has produced material for theater in addition to her two books, including a current project for the city of L.A.. She credits her experience in Brazil for giving her the writer's discipline. "In all those years in Brazil, I started to learn how to write," she says, "how to structure ideas and figure out what I had to do. And I'm a little better at it now." Yamashita is now gearing up for a third book set in Los Angeles. In the meantime, she can be found around town doing readings from her published work accompanied by music from the regions in the story. She also has organized a multimedia reading of contemporary Brazilian authors at L.A.'s unusual bookstore /literary club, Beyond Baroque, something she hopes will be repeated in the future. Ironically, Yamashita's own books have yet to be translated into Portuguese. The Watson continues to generate new ties between the United States and Brazil. "There's one fellow who's going to go and shoot a children's film," says Yamashita, "sort of a National Geographic for children. And he's planning on going to the Amazon forest." And Yamashita continues to speak highly of the program. "I wish there were more opportunities like it because it sends people out of the country," she says. "I thinkthat's critical. I thinkeveryone should be sent out so they can see with a different perspective or vision."

OPINION
Stop! 111 prisoners were killed at Carandiru in Sao Paulo TERESA CALDEIRA
The massacre at the Casa de Detencao in Sao Paulo shows in a Dantesque way the escalation in a cycle of violence that has the government's endorsement and the connivance, when not the explicit backing of a considerable part of the population. The vision of mutilated and dead bodies reveals at what distance of Justice and human rights we've arrived and how far we have walked in the direction of a sodety, in which everybody - public authorities, police, citizens prefer to exercise autonomously their revenge, violence, and supposed security. This, instead of obeying the law and respecting the Judiciary as the legitimate public institution in charge of offering reparation and distributing Justice. The support that the two most recent governors have given to the
violent action of Police has been visible. In contrast with closed societies that try to keep secret the data of their human rights violations, the Military Police of Sao Paulosta te offer frequently data about the number of civilians killed in "confrontation with the Police". Some comparative data gives us an idea of the absurdity of such numbers. The police of New York, a city famous for its criminality and violence, killed 27 and hurt 81 civilians in 1991. The violence of the Paulista,Military Police makes the statistics of Africa
do Sul seem mild. That country is responsible for half of the people condemned to death in the whole world. According to Amnesty Internationa1,172_people were killed there in 1987, the worst year since 1910. Sao Paulo Military Police, however, in 1991, killed 6.8 times more people than the racist regime of Africa do Sul in its cruellest year. Thepol icy of supporting a "hard line" is based in completely mistaken arguments. I t ass umes that violence is necessary and efficient in containing violent crime. This idea is reinforced by the clumsy contention that "since Justice doesn t work", people (police, but also common citizens who hire private police and vigilantes) are authorized to take justice on their own hands. Violence only begets violence. As Rene Girard shows clearly in his book The Violence and the Sacred, violence is something that always provokes an answer. The revenge of violent acts is an endless process, infinitely repetitive. Teresa Caldeira has as Ph.D. in Anthropology from U.C. Berkeley

Her care illus ni qss. Su de y erant, joyful ante . xploded 1 neo the big Br •Allan •les in the uth. B t she has leen gr wing for Y rs 'dam Rocha Lima Daniela Mercury is all the rage. With the exception of Collor, Itamar Franco, and PC Farias, nobody has had more space in the media lately than this 100% Baiana, who is the newest star of Brazilian Popular Music. Thanks to 0 Canto da Cidade (The Song of the City), her second LP and the first through Sony Music, she had her music "explained" by the critics of the main newspapers from the axis Rio-Sao Paulo; she answered ques-
tions in the Consumer Profile of lornal do Brasil; she sa t down on Mrs. Hebe's coach; and filled the little screen with beauty , in a music clip shown by Fantcistico. There is more. She sang to a full capacity auditorium in the giant Olimpia, in Sao Paulo, for a whole week. And, in October appeared at the most coveted of all show rooms in the country, the Carioca Canecao. She's been running a true marathon with an average of three shows a week in several Brazilian cities. Daniela regards this radical change in her life with serenity after having conquered the Northeast and Bahia, where she is from. "I was able to get into the axis RioSao Paulo with the respect critics and public have only for the biggest national artists," she says without any trait of modesty. "This success came with a lot of work and not as a favor from the media. People discovered me by coming to my show." She presents herself as spokesperson for AxeMusic, "that is starting to be seen and listened to by those who shape public opinion." Daniela has spent years and years aboard trios eletricos on the streets of Salvador, enticing people with her swing and sensuality, distributed in generous doses. "It's obvious that Tam happy with the attention the press is giving me and my work. But what moves me most is the reaction of the youngsters, the children, the teens coming to my shows. This is a generation that is growing up, shaping themselves, looking at clips of big stars of pop music, of hard rock bands, but who can identify themselves with my music," she says with pride. Daniela doesn't hide her enthusiasm following the results of 0 Canto da Cidade. And she gives part of the credit to producer Liminha. "Liminha," she says, "had an important participation in this record. Naturally the work was developed by me and he was able to respect it. But he added a lot with his incredible knowledge of studio, to the sonority I was trying to reach. The singer understands that 0 Canto da Cidade, the title song in the record, played repeatedly on the radios all over the country, sends people sentimentally to Bahia, "but I see it as the song of every city." She confesses her love for this song and talks with similar enthusiasm about the re-re-
cording of Voce Nao Entende Nada from Caetano Veloso. "I think I was able to maintain its original characteristics. This song was recorded in a raw, clean manner, with a touch of samba-reggae, but very close to the reading given by Caetano," she observes. Besides her idol Caetano, Daniela has taken many other talents on her trip of sounds and rhythm, people like Herbert Viana, from Paralamas do Sucesso, who is present in voice, guitar and composition So pra te Mostrar. There are also Moraes Moreira and Carlinhos Brown, authors of Monumento Vivo and Rimas Irmas, respectively. And other super new baianos as Armand inho Macedo and Ed mundo Caroso, who wrote the beautiful Exotica das Artes; Durval Lelis, who made Vem Morar Comigo with her; Rei Zulu and Genivaldo Evangelista, responsible for the dancing song I3atuque; and Jorge Portugal, who is the composer of Bandidos da America. Daniela seems to be more touched by those songs that revere black entities of Bahia. "These are references that are very alive in my learning as singer and ballerina, things that I have been hearing, watching, admiring, since I was a little girl," she explains. There is another song, she has special love for. It is the reflexive Genic-do Perdida, a song she made in partnership with Ramon Cruz and Toni Augusto. "It's our tribute, our solidarity with a generation that got lost between the dictatorship and the beginning of the civilian government." A generation that, happily, for the crowd of painted faces is only a pale photograph.

Gilberto Gil has a n the U.S.. Less than one year after its release in Brazil. Parabolic, the latest album by Gilberto Gil, has been released by Tropical Storm. Gilberto Gil is one of Brazil's most prestigious and popularartists, with a track record that goes back to 1966 and the birth of the influential "Tropicalia" musical and cultural movement. The Parabolic World Tour started in January with a monumental free show on Rio's Copacabana beach for over 80,000 fans. From there, Gilberto Gil toured Brazil and also covered Europe, from February to March as a solo act and returned with his band to tour through the months of July and August. On November 13, Gilberto Gil will be playing with his band at the "Town Hall," in New York, continuing with a solo from November 17 to the 21 at the "Ballroom", also in New York. He will be returning to the U.S. in early 1993 for a nationwide tour. Parabolic clearly demonstrates his tasteful and progressive musical talents. Gil proudly displays his Bahian colors and a return to his roots that we have not seen since 1979's classic Realce release. Gilberto Gil is one of the most important singers, composers and instrumentalists of modern Brazilian pop music. Since 1979, when his album Nightingale was released in the United States his music has expanded its national frontiers and achieved international status. Gilberto Passos Gil Moreira was born in Salvador, Bahia, in June 1942. He grew up listening to the desafios of the violeiros (a kind of improvised musical battle of blind singers and guitar players) at the local markets, besides street bands and the radio. By the end of the 50's Gil was playing theforros (a kind of popular dance party) with a group called Os Desafinados. At about this time, Gil heard singer and guitarist Joao Gilberto on the radio, for the first time. Gil was so impressed that he bought a guitar and learned how to sing and play the Bossa Nova. This influence is clear in his first song, Felicidade Vem Depois, from 1960. In 1969, Gil recorded one of his greatest hits, the samba Aquele Abraco. But, in that same year, Gil and Caetano Velloso were forced to leave the country by the military regime and went to London. As soon as he returned to Brazil, in 1972, he recorded Expresso 2222, an album in which he went back to his baino and samba roots. Page 22 - NEWS from BRAZIL 83 - NOVEMBER 1992
Gil's first studio album for WEA, Realce, happened in 1979. In 1985, Gil celebrated his 20 year career with the release of the album Dia Dorim Noite Neon (released in the U.S.) and with a big event in Sao Paulo called Gil 20 Anos Luz. Gilberto Gil Em Concerto, recorded live in Rio was released in 1987. It was followed by a nationwide tour with singer and poet Jorge Mautner. The next year Gil decided to dedicate some of his time to Brazilian politics. He moved back to Salvador with his family and took over the presidency of Fundacao Gregorio de Mattos (the institution which is responsible for the cultural activities and the preservation of the historical monuments of the city). In 1990, Gilberto Gil recorded 0 EternoDeusMu Danga, which was released in the U.S. Gil is now city councilor of Bahia's capital Salvador and he also has taken on worldwide commitments in support of action to save Brazil's rainforests. •

For three years now I've wanted to do something as a composer that unites my desire to help people in the world with my interest in Brazilian culture and music. The opportunity presented itself to me recently. I am an American Jazz pianist and composer who moved to Los Angeles 12 years ago in a search to grow and learn more about my art. Through the time I've been here, I've been honored to study and play with some wonderful musicians such as: Victor Feldman, Clare Fisher, and Mike Garson. While in Los Angeles, I've produced and played in original Jazz groups that have performed at various venues around L.A.. Over the last couple of years, I've searched for new inspiration. I want my music to make a difference and I want to say something uplifting to the culture we live in. Some weeks ago, I was sitting with a friend who is orgari-.; ing a series of music concerts at different locations in the Pasadena area. It occurred to me that this would be an excellent opportunity to perform

and the rest Lou Affame "Almost always open." In a city that closes its restaurants very early at nisht, this slogan from Lulu s Alibi should be enough to attract the late night gourmand. The restaurant closes at 4:00 am from Thursday to Saturday and at 1:00 am the rest of the time. But I always believed that this wouldn't be enough to explain why Lulu's Alibi is always so crowded, with its tables facing the sidewalk full of people even in the wee hours of the morning. One of the reason could be the very informal environment. Clients, usually young people, from their 18 to their mid-30s, may just buy a cup of
coffee and then stay for hours, studying, reading a magazine, or playing one of the many games that the house offers. It is just as if you were at home. This, however, again, wouldn't be enough to make Lulu's so popular. So, it was Monday night, and I decided to invite B. for dinner. The first thing I noticed was the great variety of option offered by the restaurant. Besides the Brazilian specialties, it offers a varied culinary world. I've chosen a chicken curry salad and B. has selected one of the Brazilian daily special, a steak marinated with what they call a secret Brazilian voodoo herb. We ordered at the counter, but the waiter took the food to our table. The salad was OK, but the portion wouldn't be enough if I were really hungry. The steak, actually a sand wich, reminded us of the popu-
