President Itamar? Were you by any chance sleeping when the change of guard took place in Brazil? The answer is no. At press time, presidente Collor de Mello was still clinging desperately to power. Using delaying tactics, he seems to think that five more minutes of presidency is worth all

In what promises to start a new war in the skies - and a delightful one for Brazil bound travelers - Korean Air is the newest bird that will soon be flying to Sao Paulo. The company is having its inaugural flight from LAX, October 25, a Sunday. From them on, every Sunday and Wednesday, Korean MD-11 shall be departing to the biggest Brazilian city, at 2:00 p.m., arriving in Sao Paulo at 7:40 a.m., the next day. The return trip to Los Angeles will happen on Tuesdays and Fridays, at 12:30 a.m., arriving in L.A. at 7:00 a.m.

The flight originates and ends in Korea. Korean Air is offering $849 tickets for its new service. The Korean Company with the new addition will be operating to 48 destinations in 24 countries. "We are pleased to add Brazil to our international network of destinations," said I. J. Kim, managing vice-president of Korean Air. "Now passengers traveling to and from Brazil will be able to experience Korean Air's service that features meticulous attention to every detail."

Political scandals, mainly the ones dealing with P.C. Farias, the extreasurer of Collor de Mello campaign, scared entrepreneurs. This has hurt the "election industry", that thrives during electoral times. Ad agencies, souvenir manufacturers, billboard and pamphlet designer and printers, as well as the media were left sighing and carping for the old better times. Politicians are not being able to raise the money necessary for a full-blown campaign and in consequence, buttons and other souvenir should be few and precious for collectors..

Understandable pouring of the heart or proof of despair and insanity? Defenders and foes of Collor de Mello cannot agree on an explanation for the recent verbal explosion of the president. Apparently, Collor didn't spare anyone in the opposition, during a dinner with allies in the Congress. Representative Ulysses Guimaraes (PMDB-SP) was called "senile and sclerotic". Jose Sarney, the former president, received t he epithet of "thief".

Deputy Chamber president, Ibsen Pinheiro, (PMDB-RS) won triple award, being called "scoundrel, crook, and traitor". But the press and the journalists were hit with the less odorous and the least diplomatic of the insults. "That shitty press" said the president, referring to the Fourth Power.

As any good tnineiro (native of Minas Gerais) would do, Itamar Franco is hiding his cards. But the man who will most likely be the new president of Brazil has talked about some concessions and some no-nos.

He seems more and more convinced that he will be sitting very soon in the chair of Fernando Collor de Mello.

Vice-president Itamar Franco has been listening a lot and talking very little, trying to convince his interlocutors that he is ready to shake off the nationalistic rust that covers his political discourse. In an effort to present himself as a modern politician, he says he is willing to keep Economy minister Marcilio Marques Moreira, the terms of the negotiations made by Moreira, and even the privatization plan for the state companies.

Privatization doesn' t mean the same thing for Collor and Itamar. The current president doesn't place any limits on privatization. For his constitutional substitute, however, some sanctuaries of the State are still untouchable, including Petrobras, Telebras, and Vale do Rio Doce. Besides, Itamar still conserves his mineiro provincialism. He is against the sale of Acesita, the steel

state company in Minas Gerais, his home state. The only advance the Itamar promises is to eliminate the so called "rotten currencies" from the privatization process.

Itamar wants to guarantee the governability of the country through a minimum program to be passed by Congress. Discreetly he has been encouraging some of the politicians who are visiting him to create what the congressmenare calling a national unity government. Itamar is willing to accept a minimum program in exchange for enough votes in the Congress to guarantee the passage of measures proposed by the executive branch.

His admission that he can maintain Marcilio is a strategy to keep the national entrepreneurs at ease, at a time when they seem tense and worried about a retrocession in the program for opening the economy. The question is wether or not Marcilio is willing to stay after he learns every thing Ita mar has in

his mind. I tamar doesn't want to maintain the present recessive politics, which are considered essential by Marcilio.

Since the approval of the Collorgate Inquiry Parliamentary Commission, the traffic at the Annex 2 where Itamar works has been more intense than on the third floor of the Palacio do Planalto where Collor has his office.

Senators Pedro Simon (PMDB-RS) and Mauricio Correa (PDT-DF) advised the vice-president to be less visible for the time being. The vice-president and his friends are afraid that all this movement might be interpreted as a conspiracy to overthrow Collor.

"He is not going to do anything that spells disloyalty to president Collor," informed another friend, congressman Paulino Cicero (PSDB-MG). Simon was saying, however, tha t hamar wouldn't be able to maintain his silence forever.

One of the main projects of Itamar Franco is a nationwide, ample social program. The first to hear about these

COVER plans were some politicians and military leaders with whom the vice-president talked about his ideas.

The project would try to correct what, according to the vice-president, is the main problem with the economical policy of Collor: its high social cost.

The social program of Itamar Franco was developed in secrecy by his advisers. He intends to announce it in a bombastic way as soon as the assumes the presidency, as a way to distinguish him from Collor de Mello. Some of the alternatives presented for consideration are the distribution of basic food packages to the population and a system for financial support for the unemployed.

Itamar has been preparing himself seriously for the presidency, since May when Pedro Collor de Mello, the president's brother, in an interview to Veja magazine, accused the president of several acts of corruption. Since then, he has talked to leaders of the main opposition parties. Sena tor Ped ro Simon and Mauricio Correa, for example, are frequent interlocutors. Curiously, however, senator Alexander Costa (PFL-MA) and federal representative Raul Belem, (PRN-MG), two congressmen who can be classified as "itamaristas", Maintained formal ties with the government establishment.

The vice-president conversations have been not only intensive but also

very extensive. They have included everything from frequent meetings with the Navy minister Mario Cesar Flores to talks with notorious president of the PC do B (Communist Party of Brazil), the historic communist Joao Amazonas.

Itamar, using some of these men as his mouthpiece, has sent a message: "I am not a Shiite nationalist and I do not intend to end the privatization program."

What he wants, the vice says, is a little more with the privatization process so "it will not hurt the Brazilian economy", the way it happened with Usimininas.

The vice-president intends to submit every stage of the privatization program to Congress. Former vicepresident Aureliano Chaves has been one of the emissaries for this and other messages from Itamar to the businessmen.

Itamar, who defends the Brazil's parliamentary system, intends to govern with the help of Congress, without striking alliances through the use of cabine t posts distribu ted to the parties, the way Collor has done.

His plan is to appoint politicians of several parties to his cabinet, without using their presence as a way to obtain votes in Congress.

Another concern of the vice-president is the April 21 plebiscite which

will decide what form of government Brazil should adopt (monarchic, presidentialis t, parliamentarist). Itamar promises to fight for parliamentarism but he is against the idea that the system be changed before the ending of the present presidential term in 1995.

Itamar has been much less reticent when talldng about the bugging of his home in Lago Sul, Brasilia. He has accused the Presidency as the main suspect for secretly taping his phone conversations.

"The president and his assistants should have no doubt that we will investigate till the end to determine who is responsible for the taping at the vice-president's house," said the vicepresident.

According to Itamar, there is "conclusive proof" that the violation of his privacy was intentional and not casual. He added: "I am angry and revolted, not as vice-president, but as a common citizen. For many years we have been fighting this kind of listening, authoritarianism and obscurantism. If this government is democratic, it needs to investigate this with force."

Mas sem moedas podres, de uma politica econOmica que persiga a estabilidade econornica mas nao mate as esperancas de crescimenteo, de uma politica de abertura que facilite o ingresso de novas tecnologias, e nao apenas de gadgets. E nao tern manifestado entusiasmo corn a possibilidade de conservar o ministro Marcilio Marques Moreira e, especialmente, sua politica econOmica.

Assumindo a presidencia, sua primeira atitude sera remeter ao Congesso uma nova legislacao eleitoral, implantando o voto distrital mist°.

No piano econOmico, Itamar nao dispOe ainda de um conjunto acabado de ideias. Mas funda-se em alguns conceitos fortes. que certamente embasarao a escolha de ministros da area econOmica. Ou seja, ele sabe o que quer, em relacao a alguns pontos essenciais, mas ainda nao sabe como chegar iá - o que devera ocorrer a medida em que amplie as conversas corn politicos e economistas.

Embora nao se tenha conhecimento de verbalizacOes mais detalhadas do vice-presidente sobre o tema, suas preocupacOes parecem apontar para a necessidade da chamada "agenda positiva" - ou seja, um conjunto de medidas e fatos que, acenando concretamente para a retomada dos investimentos, promova a recuperacdo da esperanca. Ele nao considera Marcilio corn o perfil adequado para promover essa reversao no pessimismo.

Embora dizendo-se a favor da politica de abertura econOmica, aparentemente Itamar nao morre de amores pelo trabalho desenvolvido pela secretaria Dorothea Werneck, onde identifca erros de enfoque capazes de levar a uma verdadeira desindustrializacao do pals.

Entende ele que a abertura deve ser utilizada para atrair cerebros e tecnologia. Por que, corn toda a abertura, indaga ele, nao conseguimos trazer especialistas internacionais em otica, quimica fina, biotecnologia? Porque a abertura nao esta sendo acompanhada de uma politica industrial e cientifica adequadas.

Para suprir a falta dessa politica industrial, Itamar pode recuperaro pa pel original do BNDES, de banco de fomento.

Considera um enorme desperdicio que uma instituicao corn a imagem e os quadros do BNDES tenha de se desgastar com discussOes sobre recursos do FAT e afins.

Julga que seu papel fundamental sera o de captador e aplicadorde recursos de agencias multilaterais e investid ores internacionais.

Itamar temconsciencia dedisporda possibilidade rarissima de uniro pals para superar a crise, dadas as circunstancias atuais. Mas nao pretende ressuscitar ideias como pactos politicos e quetais. Sua intencao é fixar uma agenda de e ntend i men tos em torno de quatro ou cinco pontos capitais.

Depois, convivercom o que considera saudaveldivergencia entre os partidos, acerca de pontos nao capitais.

Macumbadromes Umbanda and Candomble are getting space to honor their dead in the cemeteries. The Catholic church is crying foul.

DANIEL CASTRO. SAO PAULO Sao Paulo City.Hall is ready to build four macumbedromos in the municipal cemeteries of the city. These locations, with areas of approximately 100 square meters, will be used by the followers of Afro-Brazilian religions Umbanda and Camdomble - for their rituals.

According to Dalton Ferraciolli de Assis, 34, Director of Cemeteries for the Municipal Funerary Services, the construction will start this year. The "macumbadromes" will be built at the following cemeteries: Cemiterio da Saudade (Sao Miguel Paulista, eastern region), Vila Formosa (eastern region), Vila Nova Cachoeirinha (northern region), and Campo Grande (Santo Amaro, southern region).

The architectural planning for the locations was elaborated with the participation of Umband a and Candomble associations. The locations are not covered, contained within high walls and locked. Inside, they will contain a cross, symbolizing crossroads, and statues of orixas Omulu and lansa.

The "macumbadromes", which City Hall is to build, were inspired by the one located at the Municipal Cemetery of Diadema (15 km. South of Sao Paulo), opened on April 1, 1988. No serious incidents have been reported in Diadema, and the location is used by followers from the entire State.

The law, authorizing City Hall to add these locations to the cemeteries, was written by Councilman Arselino Tatto (PT) and sanctioned by Erundina on June 24 of last year. According to

Dear Editor I wish to respond to the letter from Maria Martins, from Playa Del Rey, published in the September issue.

What Maria laments, as to having an all-Portuguese programming on TV radio, has some valid points. It is something we would all want. Howperhaps Maria is not aware of iother factors:1) A program can be supported only by the interest of its viewi'Eers and / or listeners along with the sponisors being guaranteed a certain numM9er of viewers or listeners. Other Ianguage groups have, by and large, big:er and longer established communities able to s upport such programming. ::,.ii2) The very nature of the Brazilian imonigrant is that he has had to struggle to :ilearn English and he/she comes here with far better English than most language groups. The Brazilian nature :fends to enhance mixing with the community at large, and not to remain isodated. The result is that the Brazilian quickly becomes conversant with American society and adapts easily. is not always true of other language groups, who tend to make the adapta non a little slower, and hang on ;to the original language longer. 3) Many Jtrazilians have comehere independent /of family, perhaps wi th a job o ffer. Comare the independent Brazilian with Korean families that will establish a family business. The latter is more conducive to the preservation of the origiAlai language much better.

Inflation and the moratorium are not mere economic accidents in Brazil.

They are inherent in the culture. Some countries demand price stability, but we are happy when the inflation tax is stable. A fifteen month stabilization of 20% on a monthly tax in order of 20% would be considered pornographic in the rest of the world; in Brazil, this marks competence and seriousness on the part of the economic team.

The moratorium is a solid national tradition. The first Congressional discussion about external debts happened in June of 1831, no less than 161 years ago. There were the "contratualistas" who wanted to pay, and the caloteiros (deadbeat) who considered the debt as "robbery". It was something similar to the orthodox and the heterodox of today...

Since then, 14 formal and informal moratoriums have taken place: no less than fourof them under Getulio Vargas.

Sarney was happy with two. In fact we have had moratoriums under every type of government, monarchic or republican, d emocraticordictatorial, civil or military. And there are moratoriums for all preferences. The "angry" moratorium of Dilson Funaro, Mailson da Nobrega's "constricted" moratorium and the "arrogant" one of Zelia Cardoso de Mello.

Itoccurs to me that the roots maybe religious. Since we were children, we have been reciting the Lord's Prayer "Demite debita nostra sicut nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris." The proper translation is: "Forgive our debts as we forgive our debtors." The modern catechism says: "Forgive our trespasses", but this is crooked tranlation. What we really want is the forgiveness of our debts: "Di mi tte debitas nostras."

And there is also the Gospel According to St. Luke, cited in the above epigraph. When I was the negotiator for our external debts, I used to quote Chapter VI, verses 34 and 35 of St. Luke, which agitated the English (Presbyterian), American (Methodist), German (Lutheran) and Swiss (Calvinist) bankers.

These thoughts come to mind, regarding the recent external debt agreement with private banks. It's a good agreement. It is analogous to the Ar-

gentine agreement but somewhat better than the Mexican. But the letter was written in August of 1989. At the time, the agreement was met with scorn in Brazil. The decrease in debts was considered too small. Brazil, more energeticand competent, would be the boss, creating more advantages. Three years later, considered as marginal by the international business community, we succumbed to the "Brady" para-

digm. Maybe we have learned two things. One of them is that the price of not paying is higher than that of paying. The moratorium means a halt in investments, suspension of disbursements by international agencies, paralysis in foreign investments, loss of national capital, as well as increased short term interest rates and import costs. In addition, it is known today that the moratorium is an excellent way to lose savings.

The competence of the Pedro Malan and Arminio Fraga negotiating duo is not included under the special characteristics of the agreement. Its advantages over the Mexican agreement (interest of half percent less for at par bonus and guaranteed payments of 18 instead of 12 months) are ridiculously inadequate to compensate for the delay in negotiations.

What revealed the extraordinary competence of our negotiators, who deserved the title of miracle workers, was the success in obtaining an external agreement before internal adjustments. Other countries like Mexico, Venezuela, Chile and Argentina were compensated by hard ready-made adjustments.

In Brazil, the agreement served as an incentive for making the adjustment. Our neighbors jealously refer to it as the "prize for bad behavior". The painful thing is that Brazil humiliated itself for nothing since it never had a serious external debt problem. The economic standard that we will gain is 14 billion dollars if all the banks vote for the discount bonus.

We could have rid ourselves of this amount througha simpleexternal debt conversion of Electrobras and Siderbras. Italy, having a serious fiscal deficit, is now selling its Mussolini era dinosaurs, with the government expecting to make a profit of no less than $53 billion.

It is amazing how late Brazil really is in modernizing. Our modernization rhetoric is announced by gongs, but its implementation is stammering. We are the continent's indisputable inflation champions. Inflation has reached three figures (243.05%) during the first half of the year. As evidence, it is sufficient to remember that, during the same time period, among the coun-

ECONOMY tries using the Brady Plan, Venezuela had 14.4%, Argentina had 10.4%, Mexico had 6.4% and Chile had 4.3%.

Even in brutalized Peru, hand in hand with Sender° Luminoso, inflation was contained at 28.8% or almost ten times less than in Brazil. We remain the continent's most tariff pro tective courttry with an average import tariff two times above the Latin American average.

Concerning computers, our idiotic market reserves is being maintained until October. And we do not know if afterwards we shall abolish the present obscene tariffs in order to protect antediluvian computers. The foreign capital legislation is more restrictive than the laws in ex-communist countries, and we are the only Latin American country which has not yet abolished shipment revenue taxation.

The lack of port regulations is still an issue in the Senate. The initial objective was to promote free labor hiring, but the actual House text (Art. 26, Par. 1) states that "it will be done only in respect to specially registered products", perpetuating labor offices.

We are the only big country on the continent that has not made telecommunications private and which protects the fetish of oil monopolies. Argentina, Peru, Bolivia and Chile have already abolished it.

Mexico and Venezuela have made it more flexible by using risky contracts turn key investment contracts. It is necessary to have lost all shame in order to admit that Petrobras productivity is of 12 man/day barrels when compared with 15 barrels for the state Mexican company, 26 for the Venezuelan s tate company and 146 for Aramco, Saudi Arabia.

The miraculous debt agreement gives us a break to make internal adjustments and the responsibility to do so. Today's debt fatigue affects the creditors as much as the debtors. The main word is fiscal reform, which must not be only a tributary adjustment but a structured reform for expenditures as well as profits.

No reform would be deserving of this title if it did not include reconstruction of Social Security, the deficit of which has become out of control with

the aging of the population. And in this case no solution without privatization is possible.

It is inhuman cruelty to force every salaried worker (up to ten minimum salaries) to become State slaves by forcing them to contribute toward state social security, while being certain that they will not receive any services. The apparently charitable defenders of obligatory state social security condemn the poorer population to die in public hospital lines or hallways.

They have no money to contribute to two systems: the private and the state's. And not all of the enterprises can afford parallel social security. And when they do so, they transfer to the consumer the costs for correcting the inefficiency of the State. Enough of this inefficient State. Everyone must be free enough to have faith in the State, if they wish to do so, or simply to ignore it. The latter is my favorite option.

Classy soap A 50 year old novel by Jorge Amado breathes new life in a crafty and lively translation.

The Golden Harvest, by Jorge Ama do, translated by Clifford E. Landers (Avon Books, $12.50, 359p) The Violent Land resembles a year-and-a-half shoot-out between the Badath brothers and Horacio da Silveira, a struggle for control of the Sequeiro Grande, a large untapped forest ideal for replacing with cacao groves. Why? Because "cacao was money, cacao was power, cacao was the whole of life."

The tactics and gun-battles were often ruthless, and "over and above the court ofjustice, the judge, the prosecutor, and the citizen jury was the law of the trigger, which in Ilheus was the court of final appeal." In short, Jorge Amado's 1943 novel, set in the backlands of Bahia early in this century, reads like a tale of the Wild West.

Amado's next novel, The Golden Harvest (Sao Jorge dos I Ih(us), was published one year later. For the characters in The Violent Land, however, thirty years have slipped by, and Ilhous is now a respectable port city called 'the Queen of the South,' "in honor of its riches." 98% of all the cacao exported from Brazil, we are told, leaves by way of Ilheus.

Thirty years have given the plantation owners, the 'cacao colonels,' time to solidify and establish themselves.

It has also, perhaps, softened them and lowered theirguard.

The storm that brews in The Golden Harvest will also evolve into another struggle for ownership of the land, but now the ploys and skirmishes will be far more subtle than ambushes and repeating rifles.

Even in Jorge Amado's banner-waving social novels of the Thirties and Forties, the reader is entertained by the usual half-a-dozen subplots that Amado keeps whirling in the air like satellites above the main fracas of the story.

Often, too, the books are loaded up with episodes that may leave us whistling in disbelief—but turning the page to find out what happens next. And if it's soap opera, well, Jorge Amado has elevated soap opera to a high art.

So we're shuttled back and forth between the aging cacao growers, the peasants who till the land or hustle sustenance jobs in the city, and the crafty exporters of cacao.

Of the latter, Amado writes: "Only by possessing the land could they become the masters, truly people of Ilheus, owners of Ilheus."

Which they do, by inflating the price of cacao. This artificial boom, however, entices most of the colonels to live beyond their means, to borrow against future harvests, to lavish money in all the wrong places, and to indebt themselves with the exporters who generously extend credit.

Then the rug is pulled out by the exporters, the bust hits hard, and it's the time of the "beggar millionaires." More than a few of our 'old friends' from Amado's earlier novel come to a sorry end.

As befits a social novel on such a grand scale, Amado makes a strong pitch for communalownership of the lands: it'll all belong to the people one day, not to a select few who'll, once again, simply exploit the working class.

"Another age is beginning, comrade" goes one conversation. "There was the FIRST ENGLISH TRANSLATION age of the conquerors of the land, now it's the age of the exporters.

Then our time will come... It's beginning" There is the sort of florid Wagnerian finale - workers or the poor against soldiers or the police - that we've seen in other Amado books like Tereza Batista or Shepherds of the Night, and if these clashes are a little histrionic, with a bit too much fanfare, they still manage to both entertain and get their message across.

The Golden Harvest was written almost fifty years ago, but Clifford Landers has rendered Amado's prose into English with such care and attention that it reads smoothly from start to finish.

Because I am an American artist, Brazilians are often surprised at the passion they see in my work. After all, we Americans are not known to be a passionate people. It is common for foreign artists to try to save the Amazon rain forest without ever having set foot in Brazil. Not only did I set foot in Brazil, but I lived, played, and worked as a Brazilian for almost three years. In fact, I went to Brazil with the intention of never coming back.

Throughout my life, I have practiced and studied science, art, and music. As a child, I was free to explore anything I wanted without responsibility. I studied piano, trumpet, created inventions, and constantly drew and painted. As I approached adulthood, I realized that I had to become responsible for myself: this meant that I had to choose a profession.

For most young people, it is difficult to pick a profession. With my diverse interests, I found it almost impossible to satisfy all my desires with one job. As a result, in the course of 8 years of study at Ohio State University, I changed major four times, finally graduating in three: architecture, mathematics, and linguistics. Why I chose those majors, and why I am both a scientist and artist today, is intimately linked to Brazil.

In 1979, I took a calculus class that required learning to program a calculator. I became hooked on computer programming and immediately bought one of the first home computers from Radio Shack and became a "hacker".

In 1980,1 met an exchange student from Rio. She was here for one year and had to go back to her country. She returned to Brazil and I went to Oxford, England, to study. I wrote her every day while abroad and decided to visit her in Rio. Although the romance with the girl didn't last, my romance with Brazil and Rio did. Everything in Brazil seemed so alive! Life in the United States paled in comparison. I knew that this was going to be a long term romance.

I returned to the United States and studied Portuguese and Latin American History. While finishing up my mathematics degree, my Portuguese professor mentioned that he was working with a computer to analyze linguistic rules for Portuguese pronunciation. I began programming for him and thus began my current area of research: human language and computers. After getting my bachelor's degree in mathematics, I started a linguistics degree while learning computer programming on my own.

During this time, I had not lost contact with Brazil and dreamed of returning to Rio. Although I was principally Page 18 - NEWS from BRAZIL 82 - OCTOBER 1992

a scientist, I would occasionally draw, most often giving my work away to friends. In 1984, three months before receiving my master's degree, I returned to Rio. This time I felt more alive than ever and did not want to return. As hard as it was, I knew that the next time I went, I would not come back.

I graduated and completed the project I had started at a research company during graduate school. In 1987, I sold everything, bought a plane ticket, put $5000 in my tennis shoes, and went to Rio to live.

I stayed almost 3 years in Rio. I got a working visa as a scientist, taught at IME University, earned Brazilian money, learned rock climbing, did psychoanalysis, and married a Brazilian. But after having "found" myself, I knew that the passionate artist inside had to be liberated.

And to do this in Brazil, let alone in the United States, would be very difficult.

As hard as it was, I returned to the U.S. with my wife in 1990 and became a logical scientist by day, and passionate artist by night. Since then, I have had 4 works accepted by the L. A. County Museum of Art's Rental and Sales Gallery, all of which are rented (two of the works are Brazilian in theme: "CafĂŠ Brazil" and "Copacabana").

And in August 1992, I held my first art show which continues through October.

Call me Balalo It took almost a year for my baptism. But I am now a proud member of the church of Capoeira.

Edgardo Quintanilla, Los Angeles I discovered Brazil's Capoeira a year ago. Recently, along with ten fellow players of Mestre Amen's Capoeira Academy Ginga Bahia, in Santa Monica, California, I was baptized as a Capoeirista. As a 38-year-old, El Salvador-born American, I felt honored to be initiated into an African-Brazilian tradition. My Capoeira journey is one of the highlights of my 20-year stay in L.A. I was working as a law clerk last Summer in Denver, Colorado, when I signed up for a Capoeira class through the Colorado Free University. Capoeira's beauty of rhythm, song, and dance opened what has been an exciting, tiring, demanding, frustrating, but aesthetically pleasing experience.

At the end of the Summer, when I returned to L.A. to finish my last year of law school, I got Mestre Amen's number through the UCLA Dance Department. For close to a year, like a diligent turtle, I have regularly attended his classes.

The date for the Batizado was changed several times before it was set fora Saturday in late August 1992 at the Westside Academy of Dance in Santa Monica. The Batizado's invitation-flyer said: "Capoeira is a martial art, dance, and music created

by Africans in Brazil during the struggle for liberation from slavery.

Students are initiated into the art of Capoeira during a ritual Batizado in which each student demonstrates his or her skills and gains a Capoeira nickname."

I arrived to the place of the Batizado anxious and curious. At the Westside Academy, three women played castanets. I walked past a wall lined up with photos of ballet dancers, into a large cubicle with a wooden floor. Big lights on the ceiling. Behind a drum and berimbaus, a mirror-wall. Lots of anxious talk among the Capoeiristas who were stretching, running, doing the jinga, laughing, sweating, and waiting.

I felt good that some of my relatives and friends came to see the Batizado.

About 75 people showed up.

Mestre Amen told the close to 25 Capoeiristas to wait outside. I saw some relaxed Capoeiristas, whom I've never seen before, wearing T-shirts that said "Besouro" (Beetle).

We moved outside to a parking lot. A warm sun. A gentle ocean breeze. No clouds, birds, or trees.

Near by, three men played with a yellow Frisbee. Metal fences, trash bins, and cars with anti-theft devices.

The chatterof nervous people. I stayed aloof and continued to stretch.

Soon, from inside the large cubicle, the fast roll of drums and a song

- a Candomble dance. Applause. We entered quietly and formed a roda (circle). On the wooden floor, some green leaves from the Candomble dance. In his introduction to the Batizado, Mestre Amen said, "Capoeira is a way of life."

As the berimbaus, drums, and tambourines started to play, I began to feel like a happy child. A ritual in a big, alienating city where the tradition of a Mestre dumping a Capoeirista into the ground left me a good memory. After each Batizado, the audience and the circle applauded. I enjoyed to be part of the circle. The Mestre played the berimbau and the drums, and sung from the heart: Parana ĂŠ, Parana ĂŠ, Parana.

A Brazilian called Papiba baptized me.! was given the nickname of B tifalo. I could have been called Touro (Bull), but to keep the name I had to beat Mestre Mezola. "Muito obrigado," I said and didn't risk losing my teeth.

More jogos, kicks, slides, flips, and smiles. The songs and music went on. We got a Batizado corlio. I played the tambourine for a while. Experienced Capoeiristas and members of the public were invited to play. The music increased in intensity and the Batizado was over two hours after it began. As my parents drove me to my girlfriend's home, a wave of satisfaction came over me. "With commitment," I thought, "everything is possible."

At the end of the first class after the Batizado, we didn't have any jogos as we usually do. We sat in a circle and Mestre Amen asked us what we thought about the Batizado and what Capoeira meant to us. We spoke of exercise, spirituality, tradition, ancestors, feeling good, and art.

As the noise of a small airplane taking off drifted into the room, I remembered a conversation Mestre Amen had last Winter with a man who wanted to learn Capoeira.

Mestre Amen said, "I've had close to three hundred people who have come through my Academy. They haven't come back. They don't want to put the effort." I now realize that the challenge of Capoeira, and that of our existence, lies in the effort and joy that one puts into it.

I hope that the Batizado strengthens my commitment to this African-Brazilian trad ition and my dream to have a jogo in Bahia, Brazil, and sing, "Eu sou Capoeira e Maculele .;

As Alive as Ever Two new US Jorge Ben Jor releases Tropical Storm has just released two new albums by Jorge Ben Jor. They are Live in Rio - Volume I, and Live in Rio - Volume II. The albums were recorded live at the Jazzmania Club in Rio and feature some of his internationally known hits as well as some new songs.

Jorge Ben Jor was included on David Byrne's very successful compilation of Brazilian music Beleza Tropical. His track "Ponta De Lanca Africano" was the music video from that album and was shown extensively on VH-1.

Jorge Ben Jor is one of Brazil's most renowned artists. His style combines samba and pop. His lyrics are uncompromising and his guitar technique is unique. He was introduced to music by his father who was part of a musical group in Rio. When he was 18, his mother gave him an acoustic guitar as a gift and soon Jorge was playing bossa nova, samba and rock in well known clubs in Rio. The turning point in his career came in 1963 when he was invited to do background vocals on a recording for Polygram Records.

The producer, sensing a unique talent, signed Jorge to the label the next day.

Jorge Ben Jor's first record was released including the legendary Mas Que Nada, and Por Causa De Voce. Years later Sergio Mendes & Brazil '66 recorded these tunes in the United States including "Pais Tropical" and making

them also an international success. At about the same time Jorge Ben Jor's "Zazueira"and "NenaNana" were also recorded by Herb Alpert and Jose Feliciano.

His music has been continuously recorded by musicians of all generations: in the mid-'60s by the bossa nova musicians, in the late '60s by Tropicalistas Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil. In 1969, Jorge Ben Jor was part of the 4th International Music Festival in Rio

de Janeiro introducing his now standard, CharlesAnjo 45. In 1970, at the same festival, he presented the song Eu Tambem Quero Mocoto" becoming one of the biggest hits of that year. Also in 1970, Jorge Ben Jor performed at MIDEM, in France, being one of the highlights of that festival.

In 1972, Ben Jor toured Europe and Japan. That same year he also won the 7th International Music Festival in Rio de Janeiro with his song FioMaravilha.

As music by Brazilian .composers becomes more popular in the United States, artists like guitarist-singer-composer Dori Caymmi wage quiet wars of perseverance and integrity while conquering the U.S. market.

"To cross over to other countries is very difficult," says the outspoken musician. "You need to be a little more commercial.

And let me tell you, the commercial side of the story sometimes doesn't allow people to knowother people. Are you somebody? That's the question."

Nudging your way into the market becomes even more challenging when you don't readily fit into a commercial category.

With elements from jazz to classical to traditional woven throughout his music, Caymmi is not easily typecast. But he likes it that way.

"I'm the kind of artist who doesn't care too much about whether I'm commercial or not," he says. "I wasn't born to be a rock and roll player. I was born to be a Brazilian musician, with the European influence, classical influence, African influence. So that's the story of my life."

His life story also includes a rare opportunity—growing up in a musical household with his father Dorival Caymmi. His father is "number one" on Caymmi's list, when he talks about his "five guys"— the five most important influences on his music.

Joao Gilberto is number two.

"Gilberto changed my life when I was 14 years old," he says. "He taught me the first secrets."

The remaining three are drawn from Caymmi's classical training.

"Ravel, Debussy, Villa Lobos are the most important. Those are the guys that show us the way to describe

something beautiful."

Then there are influences that go beyond music: "My fatherand grandfather always taught me about friendship, love, the earth, the environment, so I learned about these things at a very young age."

The result is music with not only a rich sound, but also a rich purpose.

"My music is about my country," says Caymmi. "It's almost, geographically speaking, a description of the country. I saw a beautiful rain coming to the lake at my wife's farm in Sao Paulo, so I wrote a song about that. It's nature, the life of the people, good memories. And also man emotional way it's the story of the day to day life —a portrait of my feelings, my memories, the family in Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais."

Will this music play to U.S. audiences? Caymmi thinks so. "I went to Houston to play a concert and I got a standing ovation," he says. "Imag-

ine a Brazilian guy in Houston, playing for 3,000 Texans and a few Brazilians. I never could imagine that situation in my life."

Caymmi began to record in the U.S. when he came with Sergio Mendes in 1985.

He released his first U.S. album with Mendes in 1988.

Today, he records for Quincy Jones on the Quest label.

Under Quest, Caymmi produced the album Brasilian Serenata, his second U.S. release, and was nominated for a Grammy.

Even though Caymmi is targeting his efforts toward the U.S., he still feels the best music is coming out of Brazil.

"I think the Brazilian composers of my generation are the best composers in the world," he says, "like the Americans used to be in the forties, with powerful composers like Ellington.

"But the radios are not playing them," he continues.

"TV is not interested. Because they don't have a commercial appeal.

That's why I left the country —to have a better chance. And I'm having it."

Caymmi's next album, to be released in February, is already recorded and features some greats from the U.S. and Brazil —Herbie Hancock, Dave Grusin, Billy Childs, Abraham Laboriel, Paulinho da Costa, who, says Caymmi, "deserves to be called the number one percussion player in the world."

"We have to mix cultures," says Caymmi, "get together. You teach me your culture, I'll teach you my culture. I'm notsaying that I'mgoing to play your music, you're going to play my music. This is a mistake. I don't have to try to imitate you, you don't have to try to imitate me. Let's exchange something."

At least one weekend a month, Dori has been playing at Le Cafe, a jazz club in Sherman Oaks.

I had been to the Amazon Café last January and had a great dinner.

Now, the restaurant has a new management and I felt it was time to give it a new try. B. and I went to the restaurant on a Saturday night, just after 10:00 p.m. It is not exactly dinner time, but the restaurant was not empty.

There was, however, only one waitress to tend to the clients, serve the food, clean the tables and prepare the bill. She was very solicitous, and that helped us forget the delay in the service. The ambiance of the Ama-

The side dishes were OK. A tasty cup of black beans, yucca flour, rice, and fried bananas. I truly believe that we would have loved if we had ordered something more traditional as steak or chicken, as the food itself was well prepared.

To drink, B. had her guaranti, and I had passion fruit juice. We didn't ask for dessert...to keep our fitness.

But the Amazon has pave, quindim, and condensed milk flan. For those who love Brazilian beer, they have Antarctica. It is the second most consumed beer in Brazil. Including the tip, we spent $26 at the Amazon Café.
