The latest news from Brazil are not reassuring. Coinciding with the conclusion of the Parliamentary Enquiry about the involvement of the ex-treasurer of the president in the generalized national favor-for-sale-scheme, people are in the streets clamoring for the ouster of Collor de Mello. Despite the moral decadence of the leaders, in Brazil, motherhood and the national anthem are still sacred. The short film Pornografia was presented at the 20th Festival de Cinema de Gramado only after its producers and directors Murillo Salles and Sandra Werneck agreed on turning off the sound track. The film shows explicit scenes of sex between a couple, while the Ouviram do Ipiranga, the national anthem, blasts in the background, and yellow and green lights, the national colors, bathe the naked bodies. The Federal Police of Porto Alegre had menaced to de tain Salles and Werneck if they had shown the integral Pornografia. The judicial fight to take the movie to the masses continues. The federal prosecutor accused the movie of crime against a national symbol.

Come brega with me! There is nothing more "now" and chic than being brega, that "aesthetic attitude" that has now taken over the whole Brazil. PAULO PESTANA, RIO
The word brega has "ambiguous connotations", believes entrepreneur Wigberto Tartuce. Some would defend the notion that regardless of any ambiguity, the brega style of being - a type of way of life, for some privileged enough to include trips to Miami - is taking the whole country. It's not just taking the country in its more "profane" form, but has even made to the quarters of conventional good taste, normally associated with the circuits of the moneyed crowd, and onto stages such as that at Canecao, in Rio de Janeiro, which, if it never was considered cult, it at leastsurpassed all others in taking in the more orthodox MPB (Popular Brazilian Music) stars. Darlei
Tavares, the director of programming at Radio Globo AM, has to admit that, "all of us nowadays have just a little brega in us." But, what is brega? What does this word with a meaning as elusive as that of liberty, equality and fraternity mean? One clue maybe found by understand ing that the term "today is no longer pejorative," affirms Tavares. The programming director at Globo cites as an example of brega in music the success of Amado Batista as he explains: "Amado Batista's music speaks the language of the common people." There's still not much to go on for those who prepare to trace the semantical course of brega. The way perhaps becomes clearer when Tavares confirms that Amado - his name is a symbol and his records, barely introduced onto the market, already have 500,000 copies on order from stores - is today "what Roberto Carlos was in the past." Today to be Roberto Carlos's poetical and musical equivalent translates into songs that "talk of love and betrayal"- popular themes since Shakespeare (1546-1616), not to go too far. After all, love's suffering wasn't invented by the Jovem Guarda (upbeat, simple rock and roll of the middle to late 1960's, partly shaped by Roberto Carlos). Tavares, of Globo, as well as Cristiano Menezes, who runs Radio Cultura FM - stations that claim to be far apart from one another when it comes to aesthetical criteria - think of music that is the opposite of brega music as being "well-written, elaborate." Here, the contrast is relative. In the end, nothing is totally "black and
white", not even the shirt of the Botafogo soccer team. Tavares draws parallels - which entrepreneur Tartuce, in his very individual style of Portuguese would call "palliatives" - bridges from yesterday to today, remembering that Waldick Soriano had already moved to the forefront of brega musicians. "The outward expression of the greater technical precision of modern instruments, comparing recent successes to those of Waldick, who is after all a deliberate and self-appointed humorist ("I'm not a dog, no/To live so humiliated..." lamented Soriano two decades ago.) Darlei, himself, is contradictory: he maintains that the term brega doesn't debase anyone, but at the same time he critically points out that many of the successes of sertanejo (from the interior, or heart of the country) music, "aren't really sertanejo music," that is, it doesn't have anything to do with viols or interwoven voices. Or perhaps what appears to be ambiguity is really just the recognition of a reality - one that is ambiguous, complica ted, and intricate. Menezes, on the other side of the "aesthetic radio dial", echoes Darlei's words: to him, there is regional music that is "dense, consistent", but the market strives to "pasteurize, bregar everything" (Cris tian6 might have just have invented a new verb:bregar)."Y ou can have pleasing, agreeable things that are brega" , corrects Menezes speaking of sound "chewing-guns". "But it would be wrong to limit ourselves to them," he believes. The marketplace maneuvers are as old as the hills, and only those "born yesterday" let themselves be taken in

Some jewels of brega
Waldick Soriano, patron saint of brega
by them. Suzana Felix, 19 years old and a receptionist at Radio Globo AM, is nevertheless an exception. "Music has to have good lyrics, a story, meaning," she complains -she considers brega the group, Engenheiros do Hawai and their difficult-to-grasp song, 0 Papa e Pop, !mega. In the arena of behavior, to young Suzana, brega is "calling too much attention to yourself", "talking loud", wearing scanty clothes in cold weather." In the specific area of apparel, Suzana identifies as brega that which is dowdy or frumpy. Certain accessories should be used carefully, according to the girl: a pairof boots can look very good, but can also be brega it all depends on having a suitable sense of judgment. "After all, everyone has their own taste," she says in a conciliatory manner. Nobody would ever guess how much a simple and straightforward piece of salami could contain elements leading to reflection and metaphysics. The poor in spirit would retort: "Bah! An ordinary salami!" But the fact is that the meaning of existence can be found, without warning, in a cold and pure hunk of grease. That is what one might conclude from the story told by Wigberto Tartuce. The accountgoes like this: On a certain occasion, Tartuce was eating a salami sandwich in a snobbish bakery - what sometimes means too conceited for its own good. The clerk had still urged, "Don't you want ham? Wigberto stood firm: "Salami." The bakery needed only to hang its titles of nobility on the wall, like old time dentists used to do with their diplomas. Tartuce tells how he was seen by someone - possibly a starving millionaire - tasting his sandwich. The person who saw him would later very gloom-
ily confide to a mutual friend, "I'd like to eat a salami sandwich in public, but I can't. That's something only brega people would do." Tartuce will not accept such mannerisms. Ano ther rule of etique tte, that, according to him, afflicts some behavior purists (in public, at least) is the one that obliges a person to leave a third of their food on the plate at the end of each meal, as proof that perhaps they weren't a glutton, or worse yet, that they weren't even hungry. Hunger, you see in this instance is treated as a serious shortcoming, unworthy of a well-brought-up person. Tartuce says with candor, that he considers such rules stupid. "They should put on the plate the amount that will be eaten," he argues. But he doesn't condemn those who are ruled by such strict rules of conduct: "I don't criticize those people." The entrepreneur still remembers how the expression "new rich" is uttered with a tone of repugnance by some. According to those who put on airs in order to show snobbery toward the new rich, the best thing would be to inherit, rather than to have to amass, a fortune. Tartuce concludes the interview on a political note: "The economy would only be alright if the middle class weren't being massacred." And he sings a hypothetical Song of the Businessman - he who is an admirer of sertatieje music and once in a while appears as co-creator in song, as he himself admits, he hasn't added nary a note or syllable. "Alas, how I need a bank./ Alas, how I hope they buy an apartment/ Ui, howl would like to sell for cash." The poem might not be good for much, but has ourselves written all over it.

Every exaggeration is funny, and nothing is more exaggerated than brega. With this idea in their heads, and microphone in hand, Andre Abujamra and Fernando Salem, from Sao Paulo, and Marcondes Faith) Maia, from the state of Ceara, decided to show their stuff and did two musical projects with one goal in mind: to renew the "art" of brega using humor. But being true to brega' s precepts, Faith) comes off better with the record Bonito, Undo e Joicuio (Beautiful, Gorgeous and Bejeweled) than the band Vexame (lead by actress Marisa Orth) does on their live 1.p. Falcao makes fun of ("yeahyeah-yeah" - Beatles' style rock music), bad rock and roll, and bolero, the basic elements of brega, making a series of hilarious songs with volatile results, but that guarantee many laughs the first time they are heard. Vexame has already done work with the roots of brega, digging through the "national archives" of brega in search of treasures. They have found some anthologies, but have made a mistake on one crucial point: they have changed arrangements and tempo of the songs. Bonito, Undo e Joiado is an unexpected success. After launching the record with his own money and within an are limited to Fortaleza (in the state of Ceara) and surroundings, Falcao sold his original tape to the recording company Continental, that launched the record nationally, but without much publicity. But the incoherent version in English of a hit by Wald ick Soriano I'm Not Dog No - crossed the borders of Ceara. Falcao explain how the version was made: "The methodical English of all the lyrics contrived by Tarcisio Ma tos and me based on the Edioum Dicionario Ingres sem Mestre- that is, using a dictionary they translated the song word for word, without caring about the meaning. The most aggravating thing about it is the marvelous accent. But this Falcao doesn't live by translations alone. His Canto Breg-oriano 11 (a
play on Gregorian chant) is a jewel in the form of a bolero and with quotations in Latin: "Popularam Progressio / Diz o ditado japones / Tudo o que tenho devo a ti / Dizia Machado de Assis / Per omnia saecula, saeculo rum," he sings with his cracking jaybird-like voice. Other songs are worth noting simply because of their titles: Sou Mais
no Tempo do Figueiredo (I'm more for Figueiredo), Desamassamento (Umbending), Solda e Pintura (Welding and Paint) and S6 e Corno quem Quer (Only Those Who Want to Be Are Cuckolds). Or the unlikely Viio-se os cabacos, Ficam-se os Desgostos (The Cherries Go, But the Sorrow Stays). And among the lyrics, Falcao throws a series of socio-philosophical conclusion. "Urn homem traido, ilud do enganado / Ou é urn homem perigoso ou entao é urn abestado", ("A betrayed, duped, misled man / Is either a dangerous man, or is a fool,") he declares. Or "chato nao e ser corno; chato e o com en tario" "being the cuckold isn't the problem, the problem is the gossip." Paraphrasing Cazuza he ventures: " Eu sei que a burguesia fede / Mos tem d inheiro pra comprar perfume ("I know that the bourgeosie stinks / But they have money to buy perfume). In addition to everything else, Falcao initiates non-Ceara residents in a type of dialect with little glossaries that come with all of the lyrics. The band Vexame, a Sao Paulo outfit, in contrast to Falcao, attempts to lend irony to brega. That is their first mistake. Brega doesn' trequire subtlety , and the alterations to the songs played incessantly on the radio make them lose the power of their inherent overstatement. The band, led by Andre Abujamra (ex-Mulheres Negras) and Fernando Salem, tries to exaggerate the brega - that is add spice to an already hot meal. Pare de Tomar a Paula (Stop Taking the Pill), for example, was turned into a reggae number and lost all the charm and wit of its improbable subject; Cristo, Quem é Voce? (Christ, Who Are You?), also by Odair Jose, was another song that was hurt by the band Vexame's excesses. It's obvious that brega is not to be taken seriously - it is merely a pop subproduct of an alien culture, if viewed culturally - yet it is deserving of more accurate and faithful interpretations, with arrangements that are more... bre a...

His middle name is Brega The record by the band Vexame leaves no doubt. The creator and the one most responsible for the bregastyle is 44-year-old Od air Jose from the state of Goias. He is the author o f some o f the most representative music of the genre and the owner of "nine artistic lives", so many times has he risen and fallen in the estimation of the Brazilian public. Now he is back with a record that has only his name on the carelessly done cover, with an out-of-focus picture of him and the same theme as always: impossible love, ruined love affairs, the pain of love - molded into an imitation of rock and roll, a type of offshoot of Odair Jose arrived on the Brazilian scene a little late. In 1970, after doing 'odd jobs' just to survive, he succeeded in getting one of his songs, Chato e Atrevido (Annoyi ng and Pushy), recorded by the forgotten Denise Barreto, and onto the market. Then CBS took i t over, and it enjoyed great success with a song that could historically be considered the point of origination of brega,
Vou Tirar Voce Desse Lugar (I'm Going to Get You Out of There). It seemed as though it would be an isolated success of a singer of just one type of music, like so many others at a time in Brazil when the jovem guarda and tropicalia movements were getting left behind, and it was entering into a time of creative 'darkness'. Just three years later, Odair Jose would recapture his success, unleashing a series of songs: Cade Voce (Where Are You); Pare de Tomar a Paula; Eu, Voce, o Carro e a Praca (Me, You, the Car and the Square) and a few other, too. An encouraged, high-spirited Odair Jose experienced a turning point in his career and introduced what he called

his rock-opera, 0 Filho de Jose e Maria (The Son o Joseph and Mary), which was produced by RCA (which today is BMG) and which was a resounding failure - today it is a very rare item among the nation's brega collectors. From there, Odair Jose's career alternated between successes and failures. Upon his return, the singer-composer prefers to to what he does best, taking charge of his music and presenting some new candidates do be hits: Fazer Amor (Make Love) belongs to the genre of 'fortunate love', like Boca a Boca (Mouth to Mouth), that has a more mischievous tone: "Perdi a cabeca, pulei na piscina, entao me lembrei, nao sabia nadar, quase morro, bebi tanta agua, mas valeu a pena, quem fez boca a boca foi aquela pequena" ("I lost my head, I leaped into the pool, then I remembered, I didn't know how to swim, I almost died, I swallowed so much water, but it was worth it, the one who did mouth to mouth was that cute little one"), he sings. Still, in the glossary of brega, to love is, mainly, to suffer. And Odair Jose knows this, as the demonstrates in
Voce Nay Sabe (You Don't Know), Amor e Paixiio (Love and Passion), S6 Vou Me Ltvar (I'm Just Going to Bring Myself), and 0 Seu Adeus (Your Goodbye). Ultimately, he is an idol ready to reconquer the position only he deserves. Down with all usurpers!

Collor's suggestion that the nation wear green and yellow to show their support of the president backfired. Thousands of people have been going to the streets in passeatas and carreatas wearing black and red instead. Both colors are being adopted by those who favor the dismissal of the president. The same Sunday, in August, when Collor went jogging dressed in all the flag's colors (green, yellow, blue and white), around 300 people came to the gardens of Casa da Dinda (the presidential residence) to greet the president. Elsewhere, in Brasilia and in the rest of the country, there was a very different image. Around 100,000 people participated in a motorized protest that stretched for 20 km. of the federal Capital streets. The protesters gathered at the Tres Poderes square, in front of Palacio do Planal to. Most of them were wearing some black clothing or a piece of black material. In Alagoas, the home state of the president, there were no street demonstrations, but people in Maceio, the state capital, were also wearing black and red. Despite the intense heat, in other Northeast capitals as Recife (Pernambuco), Fortaleza (Ceara), and Salvador (Bahia), the population participated in marches wearing red and black The street rallies were echoing the paulista and carioca students who started the pro-impeachment movement . Reminiscent of the 1968 passeatas that were violently repressed, 10,000 students took to the streets, of Sao Paulo to demand the impeachment of Collor and the prison for his ex-campaign treasurer Paulo Cesar Farias, better known as PC. . Other capitals around the country followed the same script. Avenida Pa ulis ta, Ibirapuera Park and the USP (University of Sao Paulo) campus were the main venues for the protest in Sao Paulo. But there were several other carreatas around the city. Rio governor, Leonel Brizola, one of the few voices to defend Collor was jeered by the crowd when he tried once more to side with the president. The proimpeachment march in Rio lasted more than seven hours with thousands of people walking for 10 km. In the South, the story was the same. People in Porto Alegre (Rio Grande do Sul) and Curitiba (Parana) had also protests. According to government sources, Collor's idea of asking for a show of approval from the population was a terrible miscalculation that gave the opposition a rallying cry to gather and show their dissatisfaction. In the meantime, Collor's political team is scrambling to find a way to keep their man in power. They are preparing political and economic packages that they hope will cause impact and stop the presidential free fall. The so called "rescue plan" will include "ethical measures" to try to.erase months of corrup• tion news from the .ublic's minds.

Dear Editor: Before I started this letter I had a dilemma, shall I write it in English or in Portuguese, to say it better 90% in English and 10% in Portuguese, like the edition of your newspaper News from Brazil.
.
I have been livin$ in the U.S. for 8 years and regret to inform that "the press" for Brazilian residents is very dly represented, starting with your newspaper, if you can call it news paper or bad paper as it only brings bad news from Brazil. I am and have I been very disappointed with Braziltans that are "supposing" to be the •ambassadors of Brazil through newspapers, TV or radio, and at the besin .nrr il if they can have good intentions a start their programs or articles, in Portuguese, but after a very short while " they" suddenly became Amerii: can speakers with horrible accents. I TV Brazil started in New York in the late 80's and they really had a well balanced varied program, starting with news, in Portuguese, (real news, not the stuff that is published byNews from Brazil) nor sensationalistic news either, then there was a variety of subjects, as news from all over the world, then there was sports, and last one video-clip. It was excellent, however it • didn't last very long, and our TV Brazil only presented video-clips fora whole hour. What happened to the best part of the program which was "the news"? And also what happened to the Portuguese Language? Any other nationality watches programs in the same channel inNew York used to live in New York until 2 years ago) and they are televised in their original language of their coun, i.e., Korean TV is in Korean, Greek is in Greek, etc... Oh, boy!
E o caso do Nicolau.

ECONOMY
Stuck in reverse The biggies are also suffering in this recession. Even the slow 80s look bright now, by comparison. DARIO PALHARES. SAO PAULO
The 500 biggest Brazilian companies will not make $42 billion this year due to an average inactivity of 25% in their production lines. If they are able to work at 20% of their capacity, as some are betting, the loss could be less but still huge: $32 billion. The forecast is from Price Waterhouse, a consulting firm. Besides losing money for not going ahead full steam, the companies have to spend a substantial amount for maintenance and for the depreciation of their assets. According to Price Waterhouse, the 500 biggest firms, that intend to make $161 billion this year, have $52 billion in machines, equipment and real estate. Considering a depreciation of 10% a year, it means $5.2 billion for the future replacement of these assets. "Maintenance costs are high, but we don't have numbers for them. Contrary to depreciation, they are costs that depend on the installed capacity," says Celio Lora, Price Waterhouse director. "Idle capacity by itself is not a problem, " he continues. "Ina growing economy, the firms invest to serve future demand which always generates some slack in production." This is not the case with the Brazilian economy and people do what they can. Metalco, for example, is enduring the most severe belt tightening in its history. They manufacture transmission towers and are producing around 500 tons of metallic structures monthly, only 50% of its total capacity. "We are working with 250 employees when we had 700 in the middle 80s," says Luigi Cosenza, executive-director of Metalco. Despite all the inactivity, the financial health of the 500 biggest Brazilian companies is excellent, according to Price Waterhouse. It is so good, in fact, that these firms could obtain loans of up to $100 billion to face a new cycle of growing in the economy. The reason for that is the low index of debt of the Brazilian corporations. The fall of the debt, says Lora, is a growing tendency in Brazil. There is a clear avers ion to loans because interests are too high. He believes that the government should give a distinct sign when it is time to start growing again. "You need time to allow expansion plans to be activated," he says. "If not, you run the risk of having a bigger demand than the installed capacity of the companies. That's what happened in 1986 with Plano Cruzado, when the supply was fast overcome by a superheated demand."
Still too high The majority of businessmen from Sao Paulo believe that inflation will continue above 20% a month at least till December. Despite this, however, the businessmen are more optimistic about the future than just a few months ago. This new profile is part of a DataFolha survey. For 52% of the people heard, inflation will ge higher than 20% until the beginning of next year. Another 26% expect the inflation to fall between 18% and 20% as of December. But 71% answered that inflation in the next few months will stay between 20% and 30% a month. As for the recession, only 34% believe growing will start before the end of the year. 51% say they don't expect any improvemente, and 11% are predicting even worse times for the near future. Marcilio Marques Moreira, the Economy minister, continues his honeymoon with the businessmen. In February, 46% had said they considered his job good or excellent. Now the number of business people who thinks° went up to 71%. All the good will of the world however, won't help with the administration drowning head down in mud. That's the time when one man cannot make a difference.

TELEVISION
11/: T is for tease The new eight o'clock novela has sta0d, It is hot and sweaty thanks to a crew of male strippers. Novelas (nighttime t.v. soap operas) are getting more and more exploitative. After using and abusing sex scenes, the latest fashion is male strip-tease, around which the plots of De Corp° e Alma ("Body and Soul") the new eight o'clock novelaon TV Globo, will revolve. The female public is going to love it. As opposed to a Yago (treacherous character in Shakespeare's Othello), there will be a lot of Apollos exhibiting their physicalgifts in tiny briefs on the stages of an elegant Casa de Show (strip-lease club) just of wealthy "thirtyish" women. Like with Pedra sobre Pedra, the previous eight o'clock novela, the network Globo started producing De Corp° e Alma well ahead of schedule. For months, Gloria Perez had been writing the novela that began filming the end of May, under the skillful direction of Roberto Talma. With Tarcisio Meira, Betty Faria, and the nice semi-nude bodies of VitorFasano and Guilherme Leme, De Corpo e Alma, that premiered in August is delivering what promised: a lot of sex, tears, luxuriance, and seduction... all ingredients that Globo hopes will make women happy, and they make up the largest slice of the novelawatching pie. Perez si back at 8 p.m. This native of the state of Acre, who began collaboration with Janete Clair on the 10 p.m. novel Eu Prometo (I Promise), worked all schedules and even switched TV stations, when she did Carmen on the station Manchete. But true devotion to her came with Barriga de Aluguel (Belly for Rent, a novela that dealt with surrogate motherhood) that became the fourth mostwatched program on television. This success again carried the author to prime time of national t.v.-d rama that she had been away from since Partido Alto. In May of 1991, Gloria was asked to write a novela for the 8:00 time slot. Except that beforehand one would appear written by Benedito Ru_y Barbosa. But his story tookplace in Bahia, and those incharge of Globo decided topostpone this project so as not to run back-to-back novelas set in the country's Northeas t reg ion. That's why De Corp° e Alma was moved ahead. Fortunately, when they re-
quested the novela, they also were entrusting a mini-series to the author. Gloria explains, "I gave them the syno_psis of the novela beforehand so 1-could devote myself to the series, Hilda Furaciio, an adaptation of book by Roberto Drummond", discussing the fact that she had the time and the peace of mind to write. At the beginning of the year, she presented the synopsis to the producers at TV Globo, and it was accepted immediately..."by 'Boni and Mario LOcio Vaz, and I don't know for sure by who else", comments Gloria in a carefree manner. Working straight through the week, she rarely gets much sleep until late into the night after spending evenings dancing at honky-tonks, one of her biggest pleasures in life. The only thing that eases her difficult work assignment is her speed. She is able to write a chapterin just fourhours, while most authors take twice as long. The new novela has two main plots. The first one is lived by Tarcisio Meira. He is Diogo, a very handsome judge in his fifties, who is rich, married', and in love with another woman who is a former student of his. He is in the middle of the dilemma of whether to give up his family for her, and one day he finally decides, and begins to furnish an apartment where the two of them can live together. Lacking the courage to abandon his wife, he plans a trip with his lover, but at the last moment, he changes his mind. The despairing lover speeds out of the airport; she gets into an accident, and dies. Except that, to complicate things, her heart gets transplanted into another woman who happens to be young and beautiful. The judge, who feels responsible for his lovers death, decides to search for the new "owner" of the organ he loved -and he ends up transferring his love to her. This love will be reciprocated until she discovers the true pathological story behind his attentions. This is the main plot, but other stories and conflicts will help move the novela along. The most important one will involve a club where there are male strippers for the pleasure of well-off ladies. Obviously, most of the women will become involved with the Apollos that live to remove their clothes on stage. As these types of affairs aren't widely accepted by society, no doubt many conflicts will arise from them. Another important part of the drama will be established around Paloma, the woman who receives the transplanted heart. She lives in a conservative suburb and refuses to be part of a marriage of financial convenience, thereby causing economic reprisals to her family. The worst of it is that the guy she chooses to live

PROFILE
Mister Brazil Melting pot? He is it, himself, concocting a rich and spicy cultural stew with his art. Francine Alexander, L.A. Looking at the art of Bakari Santos is like standing on the brink of two great worlds - a modern world of technology, spare, clean, shining, and some ancient place, perhaps among the Incas or the Egyptians, where symbols, icons, masks, and myths reign. It isn't too surprising that Santos can produce this uncanny effect with his art. He creates via a connection between continents, between the old
and the new. The art aptly mirrors the artist's life and philosophy. It seems fitting that this connector of styles began his art career by pursuing science. "I always had this dream of understanding life itself, plants, animals, everything," says the artist. "So I studied biology." Santos was already working on his art while going to school and living with his family in Rio. A national meeting of students of biology took him to Bahia when he was twenty. "I went for this meeting and I fell in love with the city," he says.He immediately transferred from Rio to Bahia and began to support himself by selling his art. "I really got professional there," he says. At the same time, he drew inspiration from the life and culture of Salvador (capital of Bahia). "You go in the streets, you see the venders, you see the people performing capoeir a, you see the baianas, the festivals, all types of things going on. It was very inspiring for me to see all that in one place." When Santos graduated, he abandoned biology and left Bahia to travel throughout South America. "I was really researching the museums, the pre-Columbianart of the Americans," he says. He spent three years living in other countries, selling his work, taking in beautiful beaches, and nurturing his artistic vision. Since 1978, Santos has been living and thriving ih Los Angeles, taking advantage of the "cultural fantasy" to channel his art and energies through different media and in different directions. His talent receives a warm welcome from both coasts, however. In Los Angeles, his works can be seen in films, including Boys 'N' the Hood, at festivals around town, in galleries, at the Brazilian Consulate. Most recently he was invited to show at the National Black Arts Festival in Atlanta. He says he will continue to make inroads into the East Coast market. Aside from art, his principal activities revolve around events in the Brazilian community, "promoting
events for the general public and for Brazilians as well. Because not all the Brazilians that come here know about their culture." Santos describes himself as "a boy who liked rock and roll. When I came I decided you have to get in touch with your roots in order to survive spiritually." He spent eight years working at the Brazilian consulate. Besides his art, Santos seriously pursues music, through dance and percussion. His interest in dance has led to television and film appearances. "I worked on doing the lambada a long time," he says. "I did a lot of the forms and became the king of lambada for L.A." "I'm becoming a link between the city and the Brazilian community,". he says. Since 1978, Bakari Santos accurately describes his work as "mystical and mythical." More than that, his art seems to reinterpret the symbols from the past lives of humanity with Santos' own enthusiasm for life and learning. Be sure to look for Santos showing at the annual mask festival, October 24 & 25, at the Hancock Park. •

BLACK BRAZIL When the African Marketplace and Cultural Faire happens for the seventh time this year, in Los Angeles, Brazilians will be there too. The Brazilian participation will occur on September 7 (Labor Day this year), Brazilian Independence Day. Bakari Santos, a Brazilian artist and the coordinator of the Brazilian Festival, thinks it is about time Brazil has its space at the Fair. "Brazil has the largest population of people of African descent outside the African Continent," says Bakari, adding that the Brazilian community in Los Angeles is interested in sharing "our culture and traditions." The African Marketplace will start on August 29, a Saturday, continuing the next Sunday, and then again in the next extended weekend. Among the performers during the Brazilian Festival are singer Sonia Santos, Bale Folclorico do Brasil and Cheremoya Escola de Samba. Celebrations go from noon till 6 pm.
