George Bush might do almost anything to win the reelection. Luiz Alberto Monis Bandeira (photo), an ex-professorof Universidade de Brasilia and now a senior researcher for that school, says that the American president has a plan already prepared to invade Cuba, if he feels his dream to stay in the White House is unattainable. The idea behind the invasion would be

Shame tour Brasilia has its own celebrity houses tour, with a twist. The places and the celebrities in this case are all in one way or another connected to a political scandal. The organizers had to cut many lesser scandals so the trip would not take more than six hours used. For $17, the tourist has a chance to see such landmarks as the Clube das NacOes, where exm inis ter of Economy Zklia Cardoso danced Besa-meMucho, cheek to cheek, with married ex-minis ter Bernardo Cabral. An obligatory stop is the residence of businessman Paulo Cesar Faria, o PC, whose story of corruption may bring down president Collor de Mello. Other points of interest: the LBA, where first lady Rosane Collor gave her contribution to corruption, and the resid ence of ex-minis ter Bernardo Cabral, who received a jet ski as a gift from a contractor. There are 70 km. filled with intrigue, suspense and greed. All ingredients of a good pulp novel.

The Mata Virgem Foundation created by the British singer Sting and the Indian leader Raoni in conjunction with Funai (Indian National Foundation) have started to unify the biggest Indian territory inBrazil. It is Menkragnoti Reservation that will have 489 Ind ians in 4.9 million of hectares. The new reservation in the south of Para State will link the Caiap6 Reservation to the Jarina Reservation, in Mato Grosso, as well as to the Xingu National Park. When put together, the area of these reservations will be the size of one Portugal and a half. The union is going ahead despite the opposition of Para that is losing 4% of its territory and farmers who bought lots inside the area, in 1984. According to Funai studies, the more than three thousand Indians that will live in the three reservations are enemies.

It's a littlepainful and it might make some of us blush, but it is also reassuring to see so many foreigners in Brazil excavating through our past and our present in search of our national identity. These archeologists of our culture come from places as distinct as Korea, Germany, Bolivia

and the United States. In their veins it runs the same adventurous blood of Spielberg's character, Indiana Jones. And as you will see in our cover story, they are much less greedy - often their salaries seem like a bad joke - but not less ambitious than the Hollywood hero, in their quest of Brazilian treasures.. Closer to home - the US - some

COVER The Brazil that Brazilians don't even know is being discovered by foreigners. With obvious accents, blond hair, Argentine-style mustaches or almond eyes, the "hunters of the lost culture" don'tgo so faras to wear hats like Indiana Jones, but like this character of Steven Spielberg, they have complicated names and the explorer spirit. They delve into everything: Guimaraes Rosa, Jose Lins do Rego, Lima Barreto, the Constitution, even Brazilian sexuality. "I want to demystify the idea generally held about Pedro Alvares Cabral's journey," claims UruguyanGuillermo Giucci. Post-graduate in literary criticism and history in the United States, he has lived the past months bent over ancient books and documents of Portuguese colonization. One of Giucci's pleasures is searching for subtelities in Pero Vaz de Caminha's letter. "Only those who read the text of Caminha's letter simplistically could imagine that the Portuguese saw Brazil as "The Promised Land". Different motives cause these "hunters" to drop anchor in Brazilian waters and surround themselves with the abandoned national culture. "How could I do anthropological research in the United States," inquires American Scott William, a sociology professor at PUC (Pontificate Catholic University) in Rio. "I fled here," confesses Dario Restrepo, who researches literary aesthetics of Guimardes Rosa of the state of Minas Gerais. "Colombia was hellish is 1986, infested with guerrillas and drug traffickers." Partly repulsed by the "questionable funds" that

were being sent to him by narcotrafficking authorities Restrepo had ties to leftist factions -,but wanting to research the second most important literature in America," he arrived in Rio without a penny in his pocket. To express that he has been successful, he uses political rhetoric. "I am a professor and I have a hard life. But after much struggle, I managed to translate and produce theater by Nelson Rodrigues, in Bogota theaters." If they don't speak the same language, the archeologists

also don't come up with the same reasons when justifying their choice of Brazil. "This is the country of opportunities," explains French Brigitte Hervot, who graduated from the State University of Sao Paulo in literature and now is writing her thesis comparing the works of Lima Barreto with those of the French writer Guy de Maupassant. North American singer David Byrne has his followers even in the Orient. "My father listened to Fixing uinha, danced to the sounds of African rhythms and in addition to all of this musicality, I inherited the love of soccer," adds mandolin player Oh Akioka, the leader of Choroclube, a Japanese trio that specializes in chorinhos. If it is unusual to hear Jacob do Bandolim or Valdir Azevedo on the radio in Brazil, in Tokyo Choroclube's CDs have already sold 20,000 copies. Two months ago they came to Rio in order to discover and take home more of the Carioca musical flavor. To American anthropologist Richard Parker, disseminating information on latino sexuality and helping to raise consciousness about the spread of AIDS, is more than just research - it is a mission. "I was invited to teach classes in the United States. I would certainly be better compensated there." His talks at the Institute of Social Medicine at UERJ (Rio d e Janeiro State

COVER University) deal with Brazilian sexual culture, and it isn't merely chance that he lives in the most appropriate section of Rio for someone who works in this field: Copacabana. Scott William went farther away. He loved spending eight months with the Yanomani of Amazonia: he ended up learning the Indians' language before he could say a word in Portuguese. Accountant Anis Farah was the first "white man" to strike up a conversation with Williams. It was in 1973, on the plane that took the anthropologist from Manaus to Brasilia, where he was to present an account of his expedition to Funai (the government Indian agency). "In spite of his American manner, he already had a Carioca touch," remembers Farah. Politics is Elisa Danielle's subject. She is from Italy. Instructor at the University of Turin, she has been in Rio for a short period and is still looking for funding for her project. As fate would have it, she chose to research the text of precisely that whick is making her entry into the workforce so difficult: the 1988 Constitution. Accustomed to the ad miration of her friends when she recites by heart articles from previous Brazilian constitutions, in spite of everything Danielle praises certain advances in the country's laws. "This is the first democratic constitution in Brazil." All these people keep coming in large numbers. Who knows... maybe someday a researcher from New Zealand will somehow discover the correct standard for measuring Brazilian saber (knowledge) and Brazilian sabor (flavor).

Why they do that? The money is little, for some the food is lousy and the language hard to fully grasp. They don't care, however. Professor at USP (University of Sao Paulo) Jose Carlos Sebe Born Meihy, published two books on Brazilianists and is preparing a compilation of 28 interviews with foreign researchers. "Brazil, Mexico, and Japan are dream places for research in the Western imagination," he speculates. Anthropologist Roberto da Matta is more pragmatic: "The countries of the First World are like professor factories. There doesn't exist a place in the tropics that isn't infested with curious researchers." Political scientist Helio Jaguaribe prefers to show the benefits a foreign viewpoint can bring to a culture in perpetual agony. "Only those from far away can shed light on obvious realities that the natives have forgotten to pay attention to," he observes. It should be that a worksuch as one by Jose Lins do Rego would be given a more prominent place than the back of a bookshelf in empty public libraries.

Chung came from Corea to study Jose Lins do Rego

Dear Editor:

I've enclosed a list of 18 of my friends who I believe should be interested in "News from Brazil". All of them lived in Brazil and attended USP from June 1990 to July 1991, except for two who are Brazil, ians. Farofa indigesta Como pode um sudito de sua majestade britanica sobreviver em um pals do terceiro mundo, sem conhecer nem mesmo os rudimentos da lingua dos aborigenes? A resposta é muito simples. POLITICS

Just a pretty face

Collor only maintains his power thanks to a polished façade, while the government rottens in the inside. Marcelo Coelho, Se-lo Paulo Nowadays, it is difficult to speak of anything other than politics. The country is intoxicated by accusations and crises. Perhaps it is too easy to describe the reactions to what happens as simple fear or indignation. Such cases as the one of PC Farias truly constitute a somewhat unusual relation to time. It is as though an explosion, filmed in slow motion, has taken place. Investigations drag on, but it seems the world will end at any time. One of the horrible things about

journalism is that, in the beginning, a case seems to be simple, a revelation is bombastic, the certainty of crisis is established, but as it goes on, the study of the matter during the days that follow ends up in insignificance and technicalities that few can keep up with. Thanks to this, the corrupt ones always find an explanation to offer, no matter how unconvincing it maybe. The work belongs to the journalists who pull them down, but the reader gets lost in the meantime. Certainly, the indignation continues, but there is no time to keep up with all of the complications of a case. There is too much corruption for the little time available to the reader. And there are cases so complex that a fog of mistrust tends to replace the sharp outline of all factual details. Deep inside, what happens is that the society bestows the press, as well as some of the more struggling parliamentary members, the function of informing on governmental fraud. It's a division of labor, and even a journalist, who takes case A by storm, will feel insecure if he has to abruptly cover case B. Nobody can take care of everything at the same time. This way, "public opinion" is always the statistical effect of partial information, of erratic watchfulness, of the shreds of certainty that belong to each reader, each person. In conversation and social encounters, in reasonable commentary, the adjustment , the confrontation, if we can say so is made, with each person adapting to the ideal and assumed image of what would constitute "public opinion", the predicted mean of individual activities. It is by means of this mutual adaptation that a tendency, a socially political inclination assumes a definite form: the atoms, the individuals, get organized to share and to d istribute each certainty and each private opinion. Our convictions always reassert themselves when we meet someone (no matter who), who express them on their own. Collor's expression: "Don't leave me alone," is valid for each person that voices an opinion. He wants to make it "public", or at leaast to reassure himself that it is, in theory, shared by others.

There are some interesting points of view in the current governmental crisis. In the first place, the relative tranquillity of the environment. The accusations were heavy, Collor's articulation is not convincing, new factors may appear, the government's situation is practically untenable, but it is impossible to live in this "end of the world" atmosphere. In the second place, there is the quality of resistance in Collor himself. He seemed to be daring, presenting the weakest "proofs"; undergreat pressure he appears "firm", "balanced" and "soaring". It's worthy of taking one's hat off. In the third place, even though there is great desegregation, moral as well as political, in the Executive, I do not see the problem of the country's "governability" as threatened. Everything already depended on the Congress and the ministers. Collor's personal presence, and the loss of credibility that afflicts him, may be secondary aspects of the actual entourage. What could explain so much calm in the midst of so many signs of tension? Doubtless, there is reasonable confidence in institutional stability, be what may. But the most important fact is in the ambiguity of Collor's situation, itself. The government is rotting, immobile. It is more of a collapse than an implosion. The scandals drape themselves in funereal solemnity. Without doubt, Collor is hated by a big fragment of the population, but they hate him with indifference. There is no demands for his resignation. What exists is the expectation that the buffoonery be over. More than ever, President Collor stays in place by the strength of appearances, and his speech on TV showed this. There is one thing that he controls well: his appearance. Paradoxically, he dresses up in a shell of stability, in a very thin layer of firmness. There couldn't be a better actor to play the president's part: he has the voice, the "physique du role", the posture, the intonation. Discredited by public opinion, he addresses the soap opera audience. The government is at its end, but as the Americans put it: "The show must go on," Emerging as an image on the screen, it seems that Collor is not solid enough to fall.

The raw and the rare The forceful voice of Clarice Lispector can be heard again in the U.S. thanks to new translations Bondo Wyszpolski, Long Beach New Directions has apparently taken a strong liking to Clarice Lispector. Two year ago they published Soulstorm and Near to the Wild Heart (see my review in News from Brazil #45), and now they've given us The Hour of the Star ($8.95, 96 p.) and The Foreign Legion ($10.95, 219 p.), both translated by Giovanni Pontiero. The Hour of the Star is a blunt portrait of Macabea, an anti-heroine "as appetizing as cold coffee". Furthermore, "There are thousands of girls like this girl from the North-east to be found in the slums of Rio de Janeiro...They aren't even aware of the fact that they are superfluous and that nobody cares a damn about their existence." Fortunately, perhaps, Macabea is too dense to realize that she's unhappy. Her simplicity seems to enable her to cope ad to accept her inadequacies. Were she more intelligent, she would truly be a tragic figure. Now, what's really going on beneath the thin and unappealing surface of this tale? The narrator - we know him only as Rodrigo S.M. - is reluctant to begin his brief account of Macabea's life. Is it because, sometimes, banality is the most difficult subject to write about? Or is it because "The girl embodies a truth I was anxious to avoid"? Lispector is apparently suggesting that Macabea is a mirror who reflects a bare, unembellished truth that few of us can look upon without flinching. And Rodrigo S. M. is no exception: "...through her I utter my cry of horror to existence." Macabea has come from nowhere, only to slip back and be shipped back - into nowhere. Hers is a story our narrator can't tell without squirming, as if Macabea's story shines a spotlight on his own. Perhaps it does:

perhaps, also, there's a bit of Macabea in all of us. Under the hot beam, do we squirm as well? A seemingly plain, singular life, has thus turned out to have rather disturbing implications: "The facts are sonorous," Rodrigo S. M. tells us, "but among the facts there is a murmuring. It is the murmuring that frightens me." 40.47

The Foreign Legion is an altogether d ifferent kind of book, the first of its two sections comprised of thirteen stories. While these tales are commendable for iI their originality, closer in feel to abstract canvases than to conventional short prose, the downside to most of them is that they simply may not engage the reader - except as theoretical constructs. Giovanni Pontiero has certainly given them a seamless translation, so the problem isn't readability. This reviewer was only slightly intrigued and but sporadically entertained. The second part of The Foreign Legion is a miscellany of newspaper cronicas, or chronicles, the majority of them like brica-brac pulled from a drawer and set out for display. As might be expected from this grab bag approach, some catch the eye and some don't. As jotting, abstractions, sketches, and scenic but often meandering prosaic excursions, their literary value seems highly subjective: Does this one catch your fancy? Does that one? Good. Here, it's yours. The cronicas range in length from one sentence to several pages. Berne Cathedral on a Sunday Evening seems to represent Lispector's style and approach, and here it is in its entirety.

PROFILE

Tuned In His programs became an • obligatory stop for anybody traveling through the rich Brazilian music. • Francine Alexander In 1978, Sergio Mielniczenko set out to bring the bestof Brazilian music to the United States with a radio show called The Brazilian Hour. Since then he has kept the music coming— for the benefit of listeners and musicians alike. It started with one station, KXLU in Los Angeles. Today, the audience has grown to include fifty countries around the world, with forty stations carrying the show in the United States. "I came to college here for radio and television," says Mielniczenko of the show's inception. "When I was in my second year, I came to work at the Brazilian Consulate, and around that time they were about to develop the cultural sector. I've been involved with music all my life, so I proposed a radio show." Fifteen years later, the show maintains a musical depth that few other radio programs can match. "It takes more than just personal taste," says Mielniczenko, who single-handedly programs both The Brazilian Hour on KXLU and the two-hour Sounds of Brazil on KPFK. "I think I ought to play traditional Brazilian music to keep our perspective, our history." With this basic philosophy as a backdrop, Mielniczenko broadcasts a wide range of artists and styles, from samba to rock to jazz to classical. And, of course, MPB (Brazilian Popular Music). "Brazilian music is unique," he says. "There's not much machinery behind the music. It entails the work of a lot of people, a lot of pioneers, like Djavan, Milton. The music is all

of us. All these poets writing—Chico, Milton—they are telling things that we want to tell. And when you listen to them, most of all outside of Brazil, it's an assertion of your own existence as a Brazilian, and part of your culture is with you. So that makes you strong." Mielniczenko balances tradition with variety and the unexpected. He regularly tracks down new talents to include in his programming. "I like to find music that is not put out by major record companies," he says, "music that has quality." He returns to Brazil at least once a year to interview artists, scout new music, and gather news from other cultural arenas, such as science, economics, and the visual arts. "That's when I get in touch with a lot of things and fill my bag with records I don't have." Much of this research goes into the September four-hour "Brazil Special" on KPFK. When he's not producing the radio shows or working on "Brazilian Scenes," a cable video show produced with partner Cida Goncalves, Mielniczenko gets involved in the recording side of the music business. "A lot of my time for the past few years has been devoted to finding music from Brazil to be released in the United States," he says. Most recently, for example, he was instrumental in getting Flora Purim's latest album, Queen of the Night, released on Sound Wave Records. Other projects have included Sounds of Bahia (Volumes 1

and 2) and the music of Olod um and Rique Pantoja. Boosting sales of Brazilian records in the U.S. through increased exposure and better availability is one of Mielniczenko's primary goals. "Hopefully, I will be a success in that sense," he says, "not only for the pleasure of exposing people to new music, but making the music successful as well. I will keep bringing more music so people can actually go and buy it." Mielniczenko adds that efforts in this direction have been paying off, especially in recent years. "When we started in 1978," he says, "very few companies would release Brazilian albums here. But nowadays, they are first released in Brazil and then they come to the United States. Like Djavan, Milton, Ivan Lins. It has increased about fourfold at least." Born in Sao Paulo, Mielniczenko had an early career as a musician in Brazil, and can claim a top-10 hit ("Corn o Radio Ligado"). And although he put aside his music career in 1974 to pursue studies in media, he knew that music would be with him all his life. "It's incredible to do things in life that you like so much," he says. "I don't think I would do anything in life that I didn't love. I'm not the type of person who compromises. My goal is, then, using this flow of energy to bring the best we have in ourculture— one of the richest aspects of Brazilian culture, which is music."

Ton inho Horta - Also his first release in Brazil, from 1981, this album is not a single bit dated. Toninho reigns supreme when it comes to harmonizing and then young guitarist Pat Metheny learned more than a lick or two while sojourning in the rolling hills of Minas Gerais. Checkout Pratolcito, a gentle song where Toni nho shares the spotlight with Pat and the result is brilliant. None of those tiresome and redundant faster than light guitar rifts totally devoid of emotion. Viio dos Llrubus, the beautiful Minha Casa and Manoel, o A udaz with Lo Borges on vocals and Pat on guitar make searching for this CD a guarantee of listening pleasure. Djavan &Alunibrainento - A few years ago some record companies had the decency to offer two previously released albums put together on one CD, for the price of a single one, since CDs can accommodate more than 70 minutes of music. Looking for bigger profit they quickly abandoned the practice that once again proves to be a great idea. These are Djavan's second and third albums, and as it happens with Simone, represents a part of his most creative period. In these 21 tracks you can find some of his best songs like Rot nu Linha, Lambada de Serpente, Meu Bern Querer, Cara de Indio, A Rosa (with a rare upbeat performance by Chico Buarque and many others. If you have been to Djavan concerts in the last few years but couldn't find any of the songs you heard on his most recent releases in the U.S., it is because those great songs were taken from here. Now you know.
