LOVED
SERVING GOD
AMADO
AND THE DEVIL
Our most popular writer and most translated author should prepare his heart. Jorge Amado is going to be celebrating his 80th birthday in August, and Brazilians want to give him a party he has never seen in his colorful life. The event orgaaizers intend to gather at Pelourinho square, in Sal-
Sin and pardon have the same address in Caraguatatuba, a sea community in Sao Paulo. The building of Caicara Theater during the day is place for the faithful who belong to Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus (Universal Church of God's Kingdom). But at night, the temple forgets its divine mission and turns into a house of flesh worship, showing pornographic movies. Good Girl, Bad Girl, the picture being presented now, would make even Mary Magdalene blush. In this battle between God and the Devil, the evil one is getting the upper hand. There have been more people worshipping lust at night than believers praying to God, in the afternoon. This could change, however, since the church wants to buy the theater and stop the indecent projectors.
131.EM THE BOYS/ THE GIRLS AND THE THIEF All Caroline Lingke, 27, wanted was to show Europeans the drama of Brazilian street children. To do that, the German student used her savings to buy a professional camera and start the work. Lingke had just begun her movie when she turned from director into protagonist. Her camera was .stolen at Casa do Gab, an institution in South Rio, that shelter abandoned children. Unfazed, even without money to bu y a new camera, Caroline decided do live with a group of kids at Belford street. She cuts their hair, teach them to read and go with them to the beach. She is going to Berlin this month and should be back with a new camera. As for the poor children she says: "If I could, I would adopt all of them." ,
BYE-BYE, ORELHAO vador, Bahia, artists, politicians, intellectuals and all of those who love Amado around the world. Among foreign celebrities already invited for the bash are Colombian novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Italian author Umberto Eco and Cuban writer Severn Sarduy. Charged with the sound will be a rich sample of bahiano musicians, including Dorval Caimy, Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil and Caetano Velloso.
The orelhoes (big ears), the inexpensive public phones made with a metallic base and fiberglass used in Brazil, are not being retired. But in Sao Paulo, they are being replaced by new models in concrete, where vandalism is stronger. The open or three faced phone booths are being installed initially at avenida Rebougas and rua Augusta (downtown). At the end 13.6 thousand new phones will find a place in

the streets of the Capital and other towns allover the state of Sao Paulo. Telesp director of operations, Ercilio Melo Neto, says that the latest models are more durable. That should compensate for the investment of $10 billion cruzeiros. The orelhOes have been celebrated as an example of creativity of Brazilians and a for-export idea, that apparently hasn't caught up yet with the rest of the world.

The Brazilian culture has been celebrated more than usually this month of May, in the West. Using the inauguration of the new headquarters of the Brazilian Consulate in Beverly Hills as a good excuse, artists, scholars, writers gave a show of our wealth. And it's comforting to know
that even after the hoopla has passed, the people from UCLA are going to be with us. For years now, thanks to their "Program on Brazil", they have been bringing the best our country has to offer, in many areas, to exchange ideas and strengthen the relationships between Brazilians and Amencans. We encourage people to get to know them better. Our article is just an appetizer. Back in Brazil, things are great
and not so great. Great to have so many good brains, not so great to see them going some place else for lack of support. Great that businessmen are finallyvery optimistic, not so great that inflation and other indexes continue dangerous. Great we are going to host Eco-92, not so great that the rich countries don't want to take any responsibility for the environmental mess. R.M.

"There is a easy access to Finep credit but there are few companies looking for it," says the minister. "We are facing a recession and the main concern is to cover salaries." He admits there has been reduction of resources to these programs, reminding the same is happening to all other areas due to the falling of tax income. Sao Paulo, the richests tate in the Union, has iLs breaks and some mechanisms that make life a little easier for scientists here. The school received a loan from the Inter American Bank of Development and can count on the Foundation for Supporting Research in the State of Sao Paulo (Fapesp). But even researchers at University of SaoPaulo (USP) are com pia ining abou t the lack of infra-structure to work. "We do not have money to send mail or make photocopies, and the electrical lines are bad.Just the other d ay, the lab didn't have electricity or water," says Mayana Zatz from the Bio Sciences Institute. Nobody is being spared. Forces, in Rio, the first Brazilian institution to isolate the Aids virus, lost 30 scientists in 1991. They all went abroad. Today there are only nine people working in the world biggest prod ucerof yellow fever vaccination."We used to earn three times as much in the eighties," sighs the foundation president Herman Schatzmayr. Inpe (National Institute of Space Researches) continues to monitor, through satellite, the burning of the Brazilian forest;. The lack of money, however, is delaying other projects as the launching of the SCD-1, the first Brazilian satellite for collecting data, built at a cost of $20 million. The Air Ministry wasn't able to get financing for hiring a launching rocket. Many people are asking why they d id n't plan and get the financing before building • the costly satellite.

ECONOMY
GREAT, BUT Big money says it's ready to make more money in Brazil. Reality, however is not that great Fatima Fernandes, Sao Paulo
Lean and more efficient, the big private groups of Brazil are betting in a resurgence of the economy, however slow, from now on. The phase of mass firings has ended, say the businessmen. They have practically get rid off non competitive activities. Now they are drawing strategies to increase sales. The findings were made by Price Waterhouse, a consulting firm. After facing an average 29% decrease in sale, accumulated in the last two years and four months, the 500 biggest groups studied estimate an increase of 7.5% in sale this year compared to 91. Cello Lora, Price's director, says that in 1992, according to the business people, the companies are going to have a profit. In average, it should be 3.8% on net income and 8.3% on net assets. "It will be a recovery of margins, but still in lower levels than in 89." That year, he says, the average of profit for the groups was 9.7% on the net assets. The companies are also forecasting the hiring of new people. They think the number of jobs will increase 2.9% this year. Among the companies whose future looks rosier is Kodak. Gilberto Galan, director of external relations, the last strong readjustment in the company occurred in the middle of April when 200 people were fired. The firm has 2,900 employees now. He says some positions were eliminated. With that, Kodak has decreased its costs in $6 million. Galan thinks that when the economy restarts to grow, in 93, the company will be ready to face the competition. According to him, a photographic film costs the consumer today $3.2. In December 91, the price was $5.66. Other products also had a price reduction. IBM president Rudolph Hohn says that his firm didn't have fat and so didn't have to make big adjustments. According to him, the productivity level in the Brazilian factory is the same as in Japan. He is betting in a lower inflation and says that the company should earn $1.5 billion, 15% more than last year. At Philips, the number of employees fell from 19,500 to 10,500 during the so-called adjustment period that started in 1987. The holding that used to have five directors has two now. The number of senior manager decreased from 61 to 38. According to Frans Slui ter, Philips president, the corn sany produces today with the
same number of employees 30% more than four years ago, thanks to more efficiency. For many economists however there is no sign in the horizon that the recession days are almost over. Commerce works expecting a fall in sales, the orders to the industries didn't go up, and inflation promises to go a little higher again - 23% according to some forecasts. Economists point out limitations for all the signs that would make the economic activity take up. Starting with the promising effects of a great agricultural crop. "This should generate some impact, " says Yoshiaki Nakano, former aide for the Agricultural Ministry. According to him, it will not because half was planted with private money. Result: the product will be commercialized more slowly, since the farmers can stock and wait for a better price. The exports, another classic motor for the economy, grew. But they shouldn't expand much more. The country "loses its market gradually," says Nakano. "Europe presents smaller growing rates, there is possibility of recession in Japan and in the United States." The minimum wage readjustment also is seen with skepticism - if there is hope of getting a serious push to produce and sell product. "February was a good month for commerce due to the raising of the minimum," says Nakano. "With an inflation of 20% a month, however, • this effect ends very fast."

THE US LINK Interest and love for Brazil are very much alive at UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles). Theyhave Brazilian tv, riches very few people know During his recent passage through Los Angeles, for the oficial inauguration of the Los Angeles Brazilian Consulate, Brazil's Ambassador to Washington, Rubens Ricupero, touched bases with Californian authorities, business people and artists. On a show of consideration for what some scholars have been cooking at UCLA, however, he spent almost a whole day at that campus, savoring cultural plates arranged by the people connected to "The Program on Brazil". At the head of that program is Dr. Ludwig Lauerhass Jr., a man who has dedicated his life to the understanding of Brazil and its culture. The jovial scholar known to his friends as Larry has spent the last three decades peering under the Brazilian soul. Dr. Lauerhass received his B.A. in political science at the University of South Carolina and an M.A. in Latin American Studies at UCLA. Since 1968 he is the Latin American Bibliographer for the UCLA Research Library.
Why the "Program on Brazil?". "It was set up to serve a number of functions within the campus," explained professor Lauerhass, recently in an interview to Intercom. "One major activity is to stimulate cooperative research, and we have identified a number of initial areas for such research." Among such fields, is the deterioration of the Brazilian forests, the roles of education in the national development and the Brazilian cultural identity. "National identity is an area that

ECO-92
ECOSHAME If the Rio Conference is a failure, don't blame Us! Jose Sarney
Eco-92 is up to the mark The first conference was in Stockholm, in 72, when concern about life survival in our planet went to the forefront of the world concerns. It had a central theme: the discussion about quality of life, basically a critical analysis of the industrial society. The Rio Conference, however, has a diffuse agenda, diluted in a consensus program. Furthermore, the ecology theme lost the passion it used to invoke at the end of the 80s. The end of the Cold War took the priority from it. With the progressive decline of ideologies, the discussion about environment has for goal occupy a vacuum. Socialists saw in the theme a strong appeal against the capitalist society: the argument that this society, due to profit fever, was liquidating the Earth, destroying life, polluting cities, finishing the species. The capitalist world answered with the nature defense's idea, without any political tone, transferring the debate to another field, but not the one of industrial pollution, in which they were not interested. That's when the whip was left on the poorcountries' loins. They were chosen as villains. The ozone layer wasn't being destroyed by CFCs (aerosol and refrigerator gases), the increase of carbon gas in the atmosphere was not causing the greenhouse effect, the nuclear arsenals, the acid rains were not menacing the environment. The responsible for that were the fires in the Amazon, Malawi, Ivory Coast, Serra Leoa, Gambia, etc. Also grave was the extinction of the lion-monkey, of the whale, of
the Indian culture and some lizard and fish species. On the First World pollution, there was a compromising complacency. In this context, Brazil was put on the defendant seat, as a scapegoat. I faced this hard campaign against our country when I was president. We don't deny our responsibility to conserve the environment, but the big pollution of underdeveloped countries is the poverty pollution. The rich countries refuse to accept, for example, a limit to gases' emission, one of the fundamental themes, in order not to hurt their economies. The United States, just to cite one of them, doesn't want any commitment in this area. Just yesterday Bush declared: "I am not going to Rio to do bad business. Will not accept anything that's against t h eUni ted States interest." During the preparatory meetings in New York, this was the key-note, as well as the theme of the rich contributions to clean up the so called Third World. Result: about contribution, zero, about pollutants' reduction, zero. The meetings ended in frustration and the impasse mood remains. It was during my ad ministration tha t Brazil was chosen to host Eco-92. We defeated Canada and Norway, in a skillful diplomatic work. We wanted to prove that we were not the villain of theeco logy. We had nothing to hide. Now, everything is more transparent. The resistance is not from and in Brazil, which has, today, the best legislation on environment in the world. The success or failure of the conference is not our responsibility. It is a wrong way for our country to assume this stance of responsible for the event's success or failure. The results are not up to us. Up to us is the logistical backing, the necessary means so that the meeting will run properly. The substantive part belongs to those who have money and profits, but don't want the decrease of either one for humankind's benefit. If it happens what is predictable, Eco-92 willbe only rhetoric against forest fires and the Indian situation.

AN ILLUSTRIOUS PSYCHIC As partners he presents late geniuses as Victor Hugo and Rabindranath Tagore This is not the first time Divaldo Franco comes to North America. This Brazilian psychic lecturer, clairvoyant, and automatic writer, recognized as one of thegreatestspiritual channels of the century, came here many times before. In two of his most famous visits he produced the rare psychic phenomenon known as "backward writing" which can only be read with a mirror. The first time this happened, in 1982, he was in Texas. He repeated such demonstration in 1984, in North Carolina. Amazingly, without knowing any English, he produced reversed writing in that Ianguage. This time, Mr. Franco will stay for an eight day tour sponsored by the Alan Kardec Educational Society and the Spiritual Center Dr. Humberto de Campos, and will visitsix cities in Canada and the United S ta tes . In San Francisco, he will talk about "The Master plan of Life" during a Conference, at the Cathedral Hill Hotel (1100 Van Ness Ave.), May 25, at 7:00 p.m. Call Peter Cosentino in San Francisco, for more information: (415) 695-9414. In 39 years of psychic work he has lectured in more than 1000 cities in 34 countries in Europe, Africa and North and South America. Accord-
ing to the people who are bringing him from Brazil, Mr. Franco has co-authored 84 books with spiritual partners such as the French writer Victor Hugo; Indian sage Rabind ranath Tagore, and Brazilian nun Joanna de Angelis. Many of these works have been translated
into English, Spanish, Italian, Czechoslovakian and Esperanto. He is also a charitable man. The orphanage he founded and directs in Salvador, Bahia, aids over 2000 semi-residents and 116 permanent children. He is also known to the faithful to have received and transmitted messages between the living and the deceased. Such messages are often accompanied by proof of au then-

ticity, including verifiable signatures. Their sponsors in the US tell that he has recently received by automatic writing a 155 page book, in a foreign language, what according to them, was never recorded before.
