It was a tragic house fire that finally pushed Veronica Fly into opening her own store, after a long successful career in the retail industry. While rebuilding, Veronica and her husband Mark found themselves driving out of town in order to decorate and furnish their home in a style they loved.

“Rustic” can describe many different styles. “Farmhouse, French Country, Western, Shabby Chic – you name it we have it,” says Veronica.

Veronica’s chosen location on Highway 30 in College Station allows customers to shop an impressive 10,000 square feet. Originally built to house five separate businesses, Veronica shares, “The landlord believed in our idea and let us take all five spaces and create one ginormous space for Dirt Road Rustics.” The store opened in August 2017 while Hurricane Harvey wreaked havoc on the state, postponing some of the Grand Opening weekend festivities.

However, Veronica is excited to celebrate the store’s two-year anniversary this month with activities and events planned at the store from August 23rd through 25th. There will be “lots of sales, free shirts, live music, food, cake, and pictures with Brody (our shop dog).” That is right, Veronica loves sharing her work and her passion for customers and home décor with her entire family, human and canine.

Her husband (and constant support) Mark helps at the store, her youngest daughter manages the store and goes to market, her middle daughter helps out when needed, and her parents even help check in all the merchandise.

Veronica also leans on the Lord when it comes to successfully running her business day in and day out. “God has given us a gift and we love to share it with our customers . . . we pray about everything!” Veronica’s fearlessness, faith, and commitment to family seem to have paid off; Dirt Road Rustics just won Best of the Brazos “Best Décor” for the second year in a row!

QUESO CON CARNE FRITO® PIE Yields 6 servings Is there anyone who does not get just a little sad when the last of the queso is gone? This cheesy twist on the classic sporting event food is every bit as delicious as it sounds. Spicy, creamy, and full of good Tex-Mex flavor!

Ingredients • ½ cup evaporated milk, more if needed • 1 pound American cheese • 1 10-ounce can RoTel tomatoes • ¼ teaspoon salt • ¼ teaspoon black pepper • 1 ½ pounds browned, lean ground beef • 1 bag of FRITOS® corn chips • C hopped onion, chopped avocado, and chopped jalapeños for topping

Instructions 1. Heat evaporated milk in a heavy saucepan over medium heat.

2. Bring to a simmer and then reduce the heat to low and stir in the cheese.

3. Stir cheese mixture until smooth.

4. Stir in the RoTel, salt, pepper, and the cooked ground beef.

5. Simmer for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring often.

6. If it seems too thick, add a little more evaporated milk.

7. Remove from heat.

8. Spoon over a generous amount of corn chips in a serving dish.

9. Top as desired.
