Task: Resolving a cottage through the geometric encounter of a square, a circular, and a triangle form, and with the use of basic geometric operations to address circulation, visual continutiy or fragmentation, different levels of intimacy and privacy, accessibility, and transitions, amongst others. Description: Undulate is an exploration of the use of width and height to achieve a sense of movement and dynamism in the space within the building. Using the 3 shapes, I used the circle to subtract away the regions formed by the addition of the triangle and the square, forming narrow and wide spaces that imply functional spaces and spaces that are meant as transitions to one another. As a result of these operations, 3 “nodes” were defined with 2 “links” between them. Inspired by the Farnsworth house, full glass walls were used, with furniture surrounding the centre supporting wall in the room. As the building curves towards itself, residents can see across the cottage, making it seem spacious, yet the rooms are placed far apart, creating a sense of privacy. This forms a unique and engaging architectural experience, with its spatial elements dictating the purpose of the spaces within it. 1:100 0

SKYLIGHT 20.101 Architecture Core Studio 1
Instructors: Christine Yogiaman, Carlos Bañón Exercise 2 (Subtractive Design: A Way of Space-Making) - Individual February 2023 Task: Using single primitive geometries with parametric variations in a field condition, which are subtracted from a mass to create space that is not only beautiful, but functional. This project represents a departure from conventional architectural approaches and showcases the potential of earthworks and subtractive operations in creating a harmonious blend of architecture and nature. Description: Skylight investigates the nature of intersections, producing voids or surfaces depending on the proximity between 2 tapered trapezoidal unit spaces. These trapezoidal units are carefully positioned, with the entire mass treated as a continuous field that connects different areas, creating a sense of fluidity and continuity throughout the space. Several units extend upwards, producing skylights depending on the connectivity of that area, establishing its function as a public or private area. The public areas are designed to be open and welcoming, with plenty of natural light and communal spaces for gathering and socializing. The private spaces, on the other hand, are more enclosed, providing a sense of privacy and intimacy.

DUNES 20.101 Architecture Core Studio 1
Instructors: Christine Yogiaman, Carlos Bañón Exercise 1 (Articulated Grounds) - Individual February 2023 Task: With the use of 4 operations, namely folding, bending, cutting and twisting, create an articulated ground in 3D that is as field of tranisitons between various types of spaces. Description: The undulating surface, reminiscent of desert dunes, forms a permeable aggregation that burrows and floats through the earth. Vertical extrusions that appear to emerge from the ground create continuity, creating a continuous fabric, yet it delaminates the surface and articulates pockets of space. With a mix of open and closed spaces, a variety of uses can be accommodated, from public gathering spaces to intimate personal spaces. Pedestrian circulation routes run along the openings to facilitate passage across, or up and down the slopes for vantage points and views of the surface. The diversity of forms and textures creates a fun and interactive environment for the young and old.

Loft Revolve
Creation of base unit Initially used revolve, however this method was limited as it only allowed for the creation of an uniform cavity Method: drawing out 3-4 curves, which form the cavity, followed by lofting them together
Changing angle of starting curve relative to direction of loft and altering of base curve to create more diverse looking cavities
Construction of more elaborate cavities but still using the same method of drawing curves and lofting

Exercise 2 (Nature Interfaces: Cabin) - Group November - December 2022 Task: To design a cabin places in low-density natural environments with the following rules: 3 lines of constant rectangular section, a maximum of 3 sloped roofs, basic allocation of space for sleeping/ dining and living, and at least 1 facade plane must consist a lattice. Description: Our cabin revolves around the concept of opening up. As our site is located at the bottom of the hill, we wanted the cabin to direct users within it to view down the hill and capture the vastness of the land. The cabin consists of 2 floors, with the bottom floor being more enclosed and containing spaces that are more private, such as the bedroom and toilet, with the upper floor being more open, containing social spaces such as the kitchen, dining and living room. This was further emphasized with our square lattice scattered throughout the cabin. We varied the sizes depending on its purpose, as the size of the lattice affects the amount of light that enters that particular space. For this project, I worked on the renders and the physical model.

2D Project (Designing Adaptive Productive Gardens for Community) - Group November - December 2022 Task: To design vertical community gardens to address food secutiry challenges aligned with Singapore’s 2030 goals and contribute to mitigating mental health problems. The project’s ethos is to engage the community, engage users in the assembly process, and cultivate their garden. These structures shall be conceived as rapidly deployable farming modules that can be installed on HDB’s unprogrammed common spaces. Description: The design was influenced by the forms of paddy fields and Golden Mile Shopping Centre, where we wanted to create staggered tiered surfaces for the plants, so as to maximise the use of the floor space as well as maximise the sunlight received by the plants. We identified 2 key narratives which informed us on the shape of our structure as well as its placement in the plan view. Next, with the application of Ladybug, which is a Grasshopper Plugin that allows for the application of environemental data, we were able to simulate sunlight, allowing us to determine the areas which experience the most sunlight and which areas have the least. From this data, we oriented the structure in a manner to optimise the amount of sunlight received. For this project, I worked on the form generation using Grasshopper and the physical model .

The drawings above were done using Grasshopper, where we first defined the diagonal and boundary paths for the site, which is our design requirement based on the user narratives. The diagonal path is 1.2m wide, and it has a "Path Amplitude" slider to adjust its curvature, while the boundary path is a 1.0m path which is fixed around the perimeter of the site.

Exercise 1.1, 1.2 (Work From Home, Network of Rooms in a City) - Individual September - October 2022 Task: To use the floor plan drawing as an act to relate body and space and use line weights, colours, details, patterns, and layers to create a narrative through it. Next, develop a graphical document that will combine different representation systems and scales to relate our domestic spaces to the larger context of our neighbourhood and city. Description: My room is small, with cupboards lining the walls, and many art materials and tools scattered around. To maximise the space in my room, I have a foldable bed that becomes my table when kept. As such, for this project, I wanted to highlight this unique interaction and show my daily routine of transforming my bed to my table and vice versa. This interaction also reveals how I am able to carry out different activities within my small room.

SwingTogether 03.007 Design Thinking and Innovation
Instructors: Daniel Joseph Whittaker, Pablo Valdivia y Alvarado Part 1 to 4 - Individual and Group Janurary - April 2022 Task: An analysis on public spaces in Changi Business Park, and explore how they could inspire and promote social interactions. Description: SwingTogether is an all-rounded solution that tackles the problems that we have identified in the area. These problems are the lack of social interaction, the absence of shelters from natural elements, and poor lighting at night. Using swings as a base for our solution taps on the nostalgia of middle-aged office workers, creating an unintimidating installation that invites them to participate. Our design is unique in the sense that it incorporates panels that can be actuated by the movements of the swing. These panels are held along a horizontal beam, where they are individually slotted through their centres, enabling them to pivot. However, a string is loosely threaded through one side of each panel, which makes them indirectly connected with each other. Each swing has an arm attached above, where they are connected to the string, hence when swung back and forth, it pulls and pushes the panel system, thus generating a wave-like pattern. PAST PLAYTIMES Singapore- Cambridge GCE A-Levels Instructor: Chia Wei Hou, Joanna Lim H2 Art Coursework - Individual September 2018 Playing was an essential part of my childhood, and to me, the playground is an artifact that can represent this memory. As I grow older, this concept of play has become less prevalent, fading away from my present day lifestyle, yet these structures still hold and stand strong. To me, the meaning of these entities to me has transcended beyond the physical realm, with its true essence being in the memories created there rather than its physical outlook. Hence, through the usage of shadows as a metaphor of ephemerality and truth, my work explores the means of recreating such intangible memories through the irony of “permanent and manipulated shadows” , so as to better recapture and relieve it.
